Welcome
A Word Of Thanks
The Manchester Contemporary was established to present the best in critically engaged contemporary art by emerging artists of regional, national and international repute. Our commitment to risk-taking and focus on the bold and the new fits well with Manchester’s long history as a city of radical thought and action, and we are proud to provide a vital initial platform for artistic talent.
As curatorial coordinators for The Manchester Contemporary we are delighted to welcome you to the 2015 edition of the fair. In selecting participants we seek to reflect the growth and strength of a UK wide art scene that is constantly evolving. Now in its 6th year The Manchester Contemporary returns with a record number of exhibitors as demand to participate continues to grow. We want to thank all of the exhibiting artists and organisations without whom the fair would not be possible as well as funders, supporters, collaborators and of course you our audience for continuing to make The Manchester Contemporary the exciting, unique and important event that it is.
Manchester is undergoing a cultural renaissance which has seen the launch of HOME, the reopening of The Whitworth, and global media recognition everywhere from the BBC to the New York Times. The Manchester Contemporary sits at the heart of this dynamic, and therefore 2015 will be our strongest year yet, attracting a plethora of leading galleries and significant collectors. We hope you enjoy your time at the fair.

Inspired by the tireless plight of Winniefrom Samuel Beckett’s play Happy Days, this performance sees an art enthusiast (mezzo soprano) walking aimlessly around the art fair. After viewing several works, the performer stops to contemplate one art work and the audience surrounding it. She communicates to the art work and onlookers using a variety of phrases taken from the play - ‘oh happy days, this will be a happy day’, ‘no better, no worse, no change, no pain…hardly any pain at all’. She then repeatedly sings Winnie’sfinal song, The Merry Widow Waltzfrom the Operetta The Merry Widow. When interrupted by the sound of her phone ringing she is distracted and walks off to continue viewing art works in the fair. For more information visit The International 3.
