autumn update I’ve recently had the chance to sit in on the meetings of some of our Action Groups and without exception I’ve been astounded by the levels of enthusiasm and professionalism across the teams. This is even more amazing given that they are made up entirely of volunteers, working hard purely for the benefit of the town. Projects under discussion range from research into a community bus service to community safety information and advice for senior citizens. To find out more about what we do check out our website. Coming up in October is the wonderful Thatcham Festival. Some of the highlights are: l Concerts from Beenham Wind

If you run a busy lifestyle like I do, an Access Consciousness treatment clears all the rubbish that clogs our heads and allows limitless possibilities to develop beyond our imagination. Aisling has a wealth of experience and has recently set up her business at the Wellbeing Centre in Newbury. Consciousness is the ability to be present in your life in every moment, without judgment of you or anyone else. future skills Congratulations go to Chamber member Education Business Partnership West Berkshire. They have won a contract from Career + Enterprise Co. to deliver a future skills and apprenticeship programme. Events will be hosted at Green Park in Reading in Dec 16 and Windsor R/Course in January 17. The EBP continued to deliver the Vodafone ‘Take a chance’ programme. We are delighted to welcome Sara Parris, the newest member to the Chamber team in West Berks. She will cover membership retention. The local Chamber website will be live in August – content will be provided by Chamber members and the Chamber Council, the site will also have links to multiple stakeholders. Look out for a West Berks banner networking event in October – this will operate as a mini exhibition to grow your circle of contacts.

CONCERNS FOR TOWN CENTERS HEALTH We are concerned to hear that West Berkshire Council may no longer be monitoring the health of our Town Centre i.e. footfall - a record of how many visitors there are, etc. In their own Design Appraisal the Council states the importance of Thatcham Town Center and went onto say pedestrian flow is an important factor. A basic rule of business is that you cannot manage something without first monitoring its performance. For example I have heard from a shop keeper that footfall fell after the Council recently raised the parking charges here, but now we will have no evidence to support or counter this concern. Then if the long awaited redevelopment of the Kingsland Center goes forward how will the Council take a position to protect and enhance the area for all the other shops in the area?

This year, the successful CultureFest took place at St Barts School in Newbury with amazing performances and interactive workshops in the afternoon.

Charivari Agréable

at Shaw House

CultureFest is All2gether’s flagship community event, showcasing culture, heritage, diversity, community achievement, and success through performance, music, dance, arts & crafts, workshops, stalls, exhibitions and food from around the globe. This event has proven to be a great platform for promoting local projects, increase group membership, fundraise, perform, exhibit or simply raise awareness.

Award-winning early music ensemble Charivari Agréable bring to Shaw House this popular programme.

Swedish furniture giant IKEA opened its new store in Calcot, Reading

in the don’t miss the christmas Issue. . . standsv 1st no 6

It was a successful and one of the most energetic store openings that I have ever seen. I was invited to a lavish Swedish style breakfast amongst the most prominent local companies and institutions. Store Manager Johanna Heuren and her team created a welcoming, fun and caring environment and it certainly came across that the team enjoyed working for IKEA. It felt as if I was attending a big family party. The layout remains the IKEA style, however, I was delighted to learn how sustainable the building is. Their aim is to turn waste into resources, sourcing food and materials in a responsible way and protecting natural resources. The IKEA objective is to become energy independent and they are constantly switching to renewable energy. It seems that the roof will be fitted with solar panels too. So, all in all, a great company to have in the local area but above all a company that can look after our community.

Director Kah-Ming Ng is joined by Isobel Collyer and Layil Barr and together they take the audience on a narrative journey through some hugely significant historical events, including the build-up to the Battle of the Armada, and Elizabeth’s famous speech from Tilbury Dock. The programme takes us on into the reign of James I and encompasses themes of superstition and necromancy, the astonishing life of the polymath Dr Dee, and belief in witchcraft and the body’s humours. Entitled “Ravish’d by Magic” it includes sonnets, speeches and extracts from Macbeth, Hamlet and The Tempest, as well as anecdotes from the time of Elizabeth and James and of course, lots of truly stunning music. Cultivate 2016 Three young entrepreneurs from local West Berkshire schools have won Awards for innovative business ideas. This year’s Cultivate competition awarded the prizes on 14th July. The event, hosted by Bayer and devised by Education Business Partnership West Berkshire, was the culmination of six months’ work from budding young entrepreneurs from local schools and colleges. Cultivate 2016 was set up to encourage curious, self-motivated young people to take some important first steps to develop a business idea start-up. The challenge is open to anyone between 12-19 years of age with the ultimate potential of winning a prize fund of £250-£500 for investment in the idea. This year’s overall winner was Josh Carter from Newbury College, winning the top prize of £500 with his business idea, ‘Gro’ – a hydroponics plant system. The runners up prizes were won by Amee Denny from Kennet School with her business ‘Stampella’, to create specially designed crutches for children. Ben Page, Nicky Prowse, Sam Dean and William Shopland

from St Bartholomew’s School also won a commendation with their business ‘Vortex’, a retro online computer game. Amanda Richards, CEO of the Education Business Partnership added: “The future looks bright if these young people are examples

of the generation that is emerging from our local schools and college. Their creativity and determination was exceptional. They showed great maturity in the development of their business and the way they worked with the local mentors.”

34 years after ABC’s the Lexicon Of Love was released, frontman Martin Fry is back with the sequel, Lexicon Of Love II. The Breeze’s Mark Franklin caught up with him.

Hear more celebrity interviews on The Evening Breeze 7-10pm Sunday - Thursday or online now at thebreeze.com

abc

Mark: I love the story about why you decided to make this album and I’d like you to tell it if you wouldn’t mind?

thinking, when you get older, do you actually get any wiser? So all of those ideas went into making the new record.

Martin: The Lexicon Of Love was our debut album with ‘The Look Of Love’ and ‘Poison Arrow’ on it and ABC has made many albums over the years. I was playing a show at the Albert Hall and we were doing orchestral versions of The Lexicon Of Love. It was such a magical night – I was looking into the audience and did start to think ‘wouldn’t it be good to do a follow-up’. I had a couple of songs that I’d written which we slipped into the set the next time we played, and they went down a storm. I kind of thought, The Lexicon Of Love II would be unapologetically ABC and I could make it very big, orchestral and lavish without any guilt whatsoever.

Inevitably a lot of the things we did back in the eighties were experiments. Soundwise, the editing and sampling are things you can do on a laptop today and I figured it would be great to get a real orchestra, and a real drum kit, and a real bass guitar and cut them all up – today I think that is what most people do. Although not everybody has real strings so as a sort of pre-condition, I felt it had to be more orchestral.

Mark: Were you consciously trying to sonically have it almost compare to the original – or were you trying to move it away? Martin: Sonically, I didn’t want to go back to the minutiae of a Yamaha DX-7 keyboard from 1983 and try to recreate that but I did want to reference the original album and take it forwards. And also, I wanted it to be an authentic voice about how I felt about today – not me trying to be 23 years old again – but about how I felt after 29 years of marriage or the vibe I was getting off the audience when I played on stage. There’s also a song called ‘Confessions Of A Fool’ which is kind of about me and my pride, and some of the incredibly stupid and smart things you do as you get older. I kind of got to

Mark: The first single is Viva Love. It’s a massive powerhouse of a song. Just tell me about that. Martin: With Viva Love, I wanted to capture the feeling you get when you get up in the morning and feel that life is full of possibilities – that is often the feeling you get when you’re in love – but I wanted to capture some of the euphoria and the ecstasy. With the video, we got to work with Julian Temple again, who did direct ‘Poison Arrow’. I got talking to him and suggested that the past is all around us but we definitely live in the present – it’s the only way to look at things. I’ve got a few mates who are waiting for the phone to ring, and pretend it’s 1987, but despite what people think of me, that’s not how I am! So with Julian it was interesting to go back to Stratford East Theatre where we shot Poison Arrow, and shoot the video for Viva Love. But this time around there’s a young couple falling in love for the first time.

Mark: It would be remiss of me not to look at your back catalogue. For example, ‘Be Near Me’ - love that song! Martin: Yeah it’s our biggest seller and it’s a song we rarely play in the UK. But in America, it’s the encore song. Mark: Poison Arrow? Martin: It’s a pretty spiteful song, really! “Who broke my heart, you did, you did” - I can’t really count the number of times I’ve pointed deep into the heart of the audience on that moment but now they all point back at me! It’s pretty heartful and anguished, but love is a many splintered thing! Mark: When Smokey Sings? Martin: When it came out, it was after a long bout of illness for me. As I was recovering, I played a lot of music and realised how much I love it – so listening to Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder really brought it home to me about how much I love music. Mark: Just scrolling through my twitter feed, I saw Tim Peake on the International Space Station tweeting some lyrics from The Look Of Love! Martin: It’s great! I’ve hit him back. I’m hoping to set off a dialogue but it’s great to get a tweet from outer space!

Born to Twin Newbury Talks is the new non-profit volunteer group that organises fascinating talks that are free for all. Organisers are Trevor and Lucy Mathers, from Speen, and Judith Bunting from Newbury.

Stop employing Managers

Unfortunately many organisations have failed to move with the times. They’re offering new products and using new technology but still applying the same rules and bureaucratic ways of working. You can’t meet customer demands by working that way. Customers are no longer satisfied with average; they want choice and they want personal service. To satisfy your customers you need to focus on your employees because they are the ones that keep your customers happy. You need to turn your Managers into Leaders;

1

Stop controlling employees with detailed procedures and rules. Give them the autonomy and responsibility to resolve problems and complaints. Give them the tools, information and freedom to make decisions.

2

Stop telling employees what to do. They are the ones doing the job so make use of the

knowledge and relationships they have built up. They know how stuff actually works. They can tell you what works well and what’s getting in the way. You just have to ask. Your customers already (probably) tell them what they really think. Enable your people to use their knowledge and skill and you should see them, and your business grow.

3

Stop employing Managers to control things. Organisations need Leaders who focus on people and you don’t just need Leaders at the ‘top’ of a company. Everyone should be a Leader because Leaders motivate and inspire their people and encourage them to engage. And when employees are engaged they will motivate, inspire and engage your customers.

The September talk is about genetic research and the world of identical twins, and comes from Emily Smith-Woolley of the Twins Early Development Study at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, one of the foremost ongoing twin studies in the world. With the help of over 15,000 families, TEDS researchers and academics explore how we develop through childhood and adolescence and what factors contribute to making each of us who we are – whether we are twins or singletons. Entrance to Newbury Talks is free to everyone with a love of life, who want to know more. Born to Twin takes place on Sunday 11th September at 3pm in the balcony bar at Newbury’s Corn Exchange RG14 5BD.

If you are ready to recruit new members of staff to your organisation you'll be aware there is often a lot of work to do to get the process rolling.

Are your job adverts reaching the right people? Digging out the old job description (if it can be found!) and using it to create a job advert is often one of the most difficult tasks (alongside deciding what channels to use for exposure). It's a highly competitive market so it's more important than ever that your recruitment adverts stand out and offer the 'WOW' factor. A job description is a good place to start but bear in mind its often a long and detailed document and therefore unlikely to capture the attention and interest of your prospective candidates. If a job description can't be found or it’s out of date the next best step we'd advise would be to interview the current person holding the role or the

Andrew Egan, an employment specialist with law firm, Charles Lucas & Marshall, explains how settlement agreements work for both employers and employees.

Settlement Agreements: How They Work A settlement agreement is a legally binding confidential agreement between an employer and employee. It usually provides for the employer to make a severance payment in exchange for the employee’s agreement to waive their employment rights by not pursuing an employment tribunal or civil courts claim arising from the termination of their employment.

A settlement agreement can also protect an employer by reaffirming or including post-termination restrictions and duties of confidentiality while preventing an employee from bad-mouthing the employer. Such agreements can be used to resolve misconduct or work performance issues but also to resolve disciplinary or grievance disputes, to cover redundancy situations or even an amicable parting of the ways. Settlement agreements offer employers a quick and clean method of terminating someone’s employment without having to undertake a long and difficult disciplinary or redundancy process which usually involves substantial management time. For an employee, they offer the chance to avoid an otherwise painful and stressful

Supermarkets are a great place to find costumes

It's time for ghosts and ghouls. . . Here are some tips to make it a night to remember! But how did it begin? Halloween began as the festival of Samhain. It was part of the ancient Celtic religion in Britain and other parts of Europe. At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spiritIt's in America that Halloween has really taken off. Irish immigrants to the United States raised the popularity of Halloween during the 19th century.

Home s decoration

During the 20th century it became more and more popular, with traditions like pumpkin carving and trick or treating becoming part of TV shows, books and movies.s got really thin. This meant weird creatures with strange powers could wander about on Earth. The Celts had a big party. It was all about scaring away the ghosts and spirits. Later, with the Christian religion, the day became known as All Hallows' Eve - the day before All Saints' Day on 1 November.

The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die.

Try canoeing

There are more than 2,000 miles of waterways around Britain, so why not make the most of them?

Take a stroll From a relaxing amble after Sunday lunch, to a full day’s hike, our waterways offer numerous opportunities for walking. There are many circular routes you can take and the toll-paths are car-free. The Newton Poppleford & River Otter walk in Devon, for example, is a beautiful walk along the river, stopping off in the picturesque village of Tipton St John. Find a route near you at www.ifootpath.com.

Cycle Many of the canal paths are ideal for cycling. Pick up an Ordnance Survey map, or plan your route with www.sustrans.org.uk. The Trans Pennine Trail is a good option, with more than 60% of the route being traffic-free and fairly flat.

18

Almost 2 million people go canoeing in Britain. It’s a great way to keep fit while exploring the countryside. Check out www.canoe-england.org.uk for inspiration. Trails are colour coded from easy to challenging, so you can pick a route to suit your ability. Purton to Sharpness on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, for example, is classed as an ideal route for beginners. You’ll pass through several villages on route, so may even be able to stop off for a quick cuppa. You need a license to paddle on many of Britain’s waterways, which can be bought from the Canal and River Trust: www.canalrivertrust.org.uk

Britain’s

Waterways

Enjoy a leisurely boat ride Whether you hire a narrow boat for a day, or a week, boating is clearly one of the best ways to enjoy Britain’s waterways. Visit www.waterways.org.uk for advice and tips. There are more than 100 boat hire firms, with many of the larger ones offering the option to pick up and drop off at different locations. You don’t need any previous experience, as most firms will give you a short training course before you set off.

Feeling adventurous? We might think of white water rafting as something to do on holiday, but there are a few British centres. The National White Water Centre, for example, runs sessions on the Welsh mountain river Afon Tryweryn, with prices starting from just £35 for a taster lesson.

Cast off A leisurely day’s fishing can be a great way to unwind. You will need to purchase a rod fishing license from the Post Office before you cast off. An annual license starts at £27, though you can also buy licenses for shorter periods of time from just £3.75. Fishing rights are often owned by a local fishing club, but a Waterway Wanderers permit (£20 a year) gives you access to most stretches.

Wedding Style No bride wants to have a bad hair day for their wedding, so getting it right has never been so important. Internationally-renowned celebrity hairdresser Guy Kremer loves working on weddings, and says it's never too early to start planning the perfect look. "A bride should come for a consultation at least a month before the wedding," says Guy, at his Parchment Street salon in Winchester. "But she can start preparing her hair straight away to ensure it is in the perfect condition for her special day."

"Remember, the hair style you choose will need to work with your preferred style of dress - whether it has a high collar, ornate decoration or low neckline. "It should also reflect your personality, and the style of the wedding. If it is a country wedding, the look can be informal - flowing and soft. A more formal wedding needs something more elegant and sophisticated. "I see it as my role to make sure the bride feels 100 per cent confident with the way she looks. Planning a wedding can be very stressful, so it's nice for me to make one aspect of the day as easy and relaxing as possible."

Guy Kremer Multiple award winning celebrity hairdresser and twice-honoured Fellowship of British Hairdressing, Hairdresser of the Year, Guy Kremer has a firm foot in the South. He has a French provenance, an English heritage and an international reputation. His unmistakeable style of hairdressing – distinctive, elegant and chic – is loved by his clients and admired by fellow professionals worldwide.

Guy and his team are available to style your entire wedding party, from the bride and groom to the bridesmaids, mothers and extended family.

The Art of Layering

2.

Autumn has to be my favourite season for fashion. Between the cozy knits, killer boots and edgy jackets, what's not to love? While it does require a bit more effort than the summer season (after all, what's easier than throwing on a sundress or romper and sandals?) a few key pieces can quickly add both interest and polish to your outfit. Winning at autumn dressing is all about learning how to master layering. By arranging light layers on top of each other, even if the temperature drops once the sun sets, it's easy to always be comfortable. Start with a thin t-shirt or tank top. Over that, layer a light jumper and a pair of jeans or black trousers. Finish the look off with a daring jacket and a pair of stop-and-notice-me boots for a look that's anything but boring!

4.

Get the Look

Layering is also a great way to extend the life of your favourite summer dresses! Rather than pushing my summer clothes to the back of my closet, I add a pair of tights, some cute booties, a cardigan and perhaps even a skinny belt to tie it all together and now my "out of season" clothes look perfectly on point! To make getting out the door even easier, fill your closet with versatile layering pieces such as a trusted black or brown leather jacket, a colourful scarf to draw the eye to your face and don't forget a transformative pair of boots to easily up the wow factor! e.com uzzmagazin ne@localb hion as email: jani zF uz LB @ tagram: twitter/ins

Growing up you might have heard a lot of style rules, but you can say goodbye to all those old guidelines; this season it's all about mixing prints!

Play with Prints

To keep the look clean and modern, opt for a sleek silhouette or ditch your basic black for a fun colour.

Wrapped Up in Velvet Velvet has been taking centre stage, this luxurious fabric has popped up all over catwalks from London to Milan. Not only is it super soft, but the heavier fabric is perfect for those crisp autumn nights. This season designers incorporated velvet in all it's splendor. A big hit on the runways at Prabal Gurung, DKNY, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, Alberta Ferretti, and Adam Selman, to name a few, velvet really is this season's go-to textile.

ON trend

Rocking the runway with prints-on-prints, both Marc Jacobs and MSGM sported outfits with 4 and even 5 different ones all at once! With so many gorgeous coats and frocks comprised of multiple prints, it's now easier than ever to get completely decked out. Or pair your favourite prints together like Salvatore Ferragamo does. To mix and match at home, start with one dominate print and then add an accent print. Play with different scales, but keep in the same colour family to ensure your outfit remains cohesive.

Autumn is here, it's time to up your style game!

Graphic Eye It's time to up your eyeliner game!

By creating a heavy geometric shape or Armani's Autumn 2016 Collection moving your traditional simple eyeliner up presented at Milan Fashion Week was from your lashline to the crease, you get centred around velvet. It doesn't matter Shoon Babington ÂŁ120 "always loved this material for it's if you go for an exaggerated wing, subdued, intense splendor," he a bold oblong sweep of charcoal incorporated it into round or something in between, Nothing screams autumn like a new pair of boots! collared jackets and wide daring eyes are worth a This season's most prominent footwear trends leg trousers, mixed it with lace second look. include both the mid-calf boot and the over-the-ankle boot. and embroidery and paired it Your sky high tall boots are still very much in style, but these with satin and ruffles. @Glamba shorter alternatives decked out with chunky block heels and Whether sewn into shoulder large buckle embellishments are a great way to add some bearing dresses like at Monse, edge and still show a little leg. stitched into trousers like at If you have trouble finding boots that fit around your calves Jill Stuart or constructed or if you're looking to update some of the autumn staples you into an elegant suit like at already own, this is a great option. That Summer in Ischia Penny Fenny Ischia is an Italian island in the bay of Naples. Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena, inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. Fenny Ischia are truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read.

Which Witch? By Eva Ibbotson Set in the English countryside this is a fantastical novel for readers aged 9-11. As the story begins we learn of the darkest wizard in the country. Arriman the Awful lives near the village of Todcaster and spends his days performing dark magic. However, over the years he has grown tired of this and is delighted to receive a prophecy that a much darker wizard will appear and take over his role. However, when no one appears he decides that there is only one thing for it: he must take a wife and have a child who will take over from him. So he calls together the seven witches of Todcaster and holds a contest to find the darkest witch.

A Grandmother's Legacy By Jenny Mallin Local author Jenny Mallin recently self published her fascinating book which is available from Amazon. A Grandmother's Legacy is based on all five of her grandmothers who lived in India during the British Raj, and left behind a legacy of an old recipe book. The book was started by her great great great grandmother, Wilhelmina Sausman in 1844. Wilhelmina, a fifteen year old bride wrote down all her recipes and then handed it over to her daughter Ophelia Hardy, who did the same thing. Each generation passed that book on, until the book finally ended up with Jenny. It's a story about these extraordinary ladies and a most fascinating read.

From midday to 11pm, street food will be served from over twenty handpicked food stalls, serving eclectic, gourmet dishes from around the world. A selection of drinks will be served from Hop On Inn’s converted double decker bus bar, while Beetle Juice’s iconic VW camper van will provide exclusive cocktails. My secret? Exercise

with the simplicity of natural energy

Ignoring pain won’t make it go away, neither will avoiding those pain trigger movements. In fact, limiting movements will weaken muscles which will actually exacerbate joint problems. Those muscle weaknesses will eventually affect posture, creating a cascade of further problems. Doing specific exercises for your condition may even allow you to postpone or even avoid surgeries and in some cases, relieve your pain altogether by strengthening key stabilising muscles and restoring flexibility. Exercise is also good for your heart, mind and may even shift some of those extra pounds. . . it doesn’t even have to be intense exercise.

So why not give it a go? Come to me for specific exercises that may help alleviate your problem.

Yoga has been a top trend for a few years and it doesn’t seem to be dying down any time soon. That’s most likely because it isn’t just another trend!

Why Yoga is Good For Body and Soul The benefits of Yoga are numerous and by practicing this art of stretching, strengthening & relaxation you could enhance not only your physical fitness but you’re mental health as well!

The benefits of breathing Everyone seems to be busy these days and many of us are rushing around juggling work, family life and social time. The idea of sitting still and taking a few deep breaths can seem impossible and even to some like a waste of time, when actually taking a deep breath could be the most productive thing you do all day! The amount of Oxygen in your system directly affects the amount of adrenaline you produce, so by taking a few deep breaths you will be able to reducing levels of anxiety and stress, allowing a much calmer and productive thought process to take place.

Stretching & physical benefits It’s simple, tight muscle just don’t work efficiently! If you’re working hard to maintain a fitness programme but neglect to stretch, you are hugely reducing the benefits of your workout! Stretching allows muscles to increase flexibility, improve range of motion, reduce the risk of injury and improve over all performance!

Relaxation Being able to relax the mind is crucial when to comes to balancing mood, improving sleep and aiding concentration. Taking just 15-20 minutes to rest without television, mobiles or a tablet can have a marked improvement on your concentration and energy levels, allowing your mind to function better for the time ahead.

My book is based on all five of my grandmothers who lived in India during the British Raj, and left behind a legacy of an old recipe book which was started off by my great great great grandmother, Wilhelmina Sausman in 1844.

A

Written by Jenny Mallin

Grandmother's Legacy Wilhelmina, a fifteen year old bride wrote down all her recipes in the most beautiful copperplate handwriting, and then handed it over to her daughter Ophelia Hardy, who did the same thing and each generation passed that book on, writing down all their recipes, until the book finally ended up with me. It's a story about these extraordinary ladies, my grandmothers, who were brought up during the reign of Queen Victoria and King George, fiercely loyal to Queen (and King) and country, yet lived 6,000 miles away in India. There are over 500 recipes in my "legacy" book of my grandmothers, and in my published book there are over 70 recipes which I have taken from the grandmothers and converted into metric, with my mother being the chief taster,

I would only move on to the next recipe once my mother was satisfied that the taste was authentic - in some cases the recipes would be tested, six or seven times over in order to meet my mother's approval. I have recently returned from a month long book tour in six cities right across India, where I was following in my grandmothers' footsteps and lived a hop, skip and a jump from their houses in order to gain a real insight into the kind of area they once lived in: the markets, churches and institutes still remain. My book talks were held at some prestigious locations such as the Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata, and the Cama Institute in Mumbai, I met hundreds of people who attended my book talks and was overcome to find that 75% of my audience were men. They would enjoy listening to stories of the Railways in India, the First World War in Mesopotamia where India servicemen were posted and of course the lifestyles of my grandmothers which I managed to bring to life through a powerful and moving Powerpoint presentation.

Meet Aaron from The Unruly in Parkway "I started having tattoos 12 years ago when I was part of a skater culture. At that time, it was unusual and really against the grain. My friend started having tattoos so I did! Later, tattoos become really trendy and is now accepted by society and this is the time that I wanted to evolve and still be outside the box by having something a bit shocking, so the tattoos got higher and out on the hands and face; they have become more aggressive and different. I wish I could have more but as a business owner, I have to be presentable but I will carry on as I still have spaces left!"

Fancy a

Tattoo? Meet Lee from Timpsons at the Kennet Centre “I had my first tattoo when I was 22. I wanted one for ages but jobs prevented me having one. I remember seeing my relatives having tattoos and I was fascinated about the imagery but also how it would stay on the skin and the different layers needed. I literally love everything about it, including the culture. The reason I had it done is because I always liked the artwork. I would have loads more as I am not even 10% finished. My aim is to have the whole body covered but not the face!

It always amazes me the time and money spent on tattoos and why people choose to mark their bodies forever, something that once was associated with sailors, convicts and gang members. I was delighted to meet two local people who shared their stories with me. Tattoos are everywhere. Tattoos are respectable and no longer associated with sailors, convicts and gang members. It seems that one in five adults say they have or are planning to have one. But increasingly bearers are no longer content to settle for a single, discreet tattoo that can be easily concealed. Instead, the inspiration could come from David Beckham, who has no fewer than 34 tattoos, and Cheryl Cole, whose collection includes a bunch of roses tattooed across her lower back, buttocks and legs. However, typically it can take between two and seven years before getting a second tattoo. The psychology of tattooing has been the subject of increased academic analysis in recent decades. But what drives people to come back for more,

rather than settle for a single tattoo, is a question that researchers have largely neglected to address. Studies found that personality differences between tattooed and nontattooed individuals were generally small although those with tattoos tended to be more extroverted and display a greater "need for uniqueness". Most people want to feel unique as an individual, which therefore brings you to think it is an aesthetic preference, however an increasing number of people who suffer from vitiligo, which is a condition that leaves much of the skin covered in white blotches, have chosen to have tattoos to conceal this condition.

The post Brexit/holiday period has caused a slowdown in demand but the market appears to be re-adjusting – with the exception of the investment market and the expectation is a return to ‘business as normal’ for the last quarter.

Greenham Business Park has enjoyed a period of busy activity with strong lettings and sales.

Property Roundup Transactions during the month Offices at 7 West Mills Yard has been let with minimal marketing on quoted terms of £5,500 p.a. for 273sq ft of space. The first floor of St Luke’s House has been acquired by private investors. . . the day the Brexit vote was revealed! The property is let and was bought at 7½% yield on income. Yet more lease negotiations at Crownmead Thatcham have concluded, with Lloyds Chemists renewing for 10 years,

securing the future of this business in this popular neighbourhood centre. Unit 5 Station Road Industrial Estate in Thatcham, which is an industrial unit of 6,500sq ft has been let on a new 5 year lease. Acting for the landlord, Deal Varney have negotiated a new lease with an American based company that have expanded their business operation by acquiring a Thatcham based company that will be occupying the building. A brand new workshop/warehouse is presently under construction and known as The Barn, The Long Yard, Shefford Woodlands. Practical completion is anticipated for early September and the building will provide 2,400sq ft of high quality accommodation benefiting from excellent levels of insulation as well as an air-source heat pump, LED lighting and PV panels on the roof for electricity generation. This building is available to let on a new full repairing and insuring lease for a term of 10 years at a commencing rental of £21,600 per annum.

pet feature

It's very surprising how many people come to us because their dogs have itchy dry skin or they tend to scratch their ears as well as chew their feet.

Diet affects

your pets! In some cases, they have poor digestion and their bowel movements are incredibly soft and smelly. However, these issues have been resolved when we advised them to change their pet’s food to a gluten free or grain free diet. Not long ago, Alan spent some time with a customer to help resolve issues that her Labrador “Poppy” was having. Sadly “Poppy” was suffering since she was 8 weeks old. Here is what Poppy’s owner had to say, “Since Poppy (our black Labrador) arrived with us at 8 weeks old, she had always had problems with her bowels. Her stools were very loose and sadly she also liked to eat them. As per the advice of my vet and many online forums, I had tried various different foods with little improvement. When I met Alan we had a long chat about it and he advised that If you don't know what's in their food, you don't know what's in your pet

perhaps she had a gluten intolerance and we could try her on a gluten free range of food. This made a huge improvement, but instead, left her slightly constipated, so Alan came for another visit and we chatted further. We discussed the different food options and my concerns with the current food. We decided to change Poppy to the maize lamb and rice that is slightly lower in protein. Since then she has been absolutely brilliant and I couldn’t be happier.” Our advice to all pet owners is always check the food ingredients list so that you know what you are feeding your pet. We only use human grade standard foods with no additives or preservatives or anti moulding agents. Make sure there is an honest label policy which means that the food is analysed 100%.

We offer a free advice line to our customers on all your pet’s needs; whether it is nutritional, behavioural or veterinary issues, we have a team of experts waiting for your call.

It’s Only Natural... For head to tail nutrition we carefully choose the ingredients that go into your OSCAR Pet Food. garden view

We all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special. Green

foliage A garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own. Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it.

Rodgersia pinnata An excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant.

struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring.

New Zealand flax A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again.

Grasses Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis “Zebrinus”. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February.

Catalpa bignonioides Finally, if you have the space, for real in-your-face foliage try the goldenleaved Catalpa bignonioides “Aurea”. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage.

Ferns I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia

Hosta Truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety “Frances Williams” which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well...preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade.
