The Shmuz on the Parsha

Rabbi Ben Tzion Shafier

Sefiras Ha’OmerWhy We Count, What We Count Parshas Emor “And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the rest day, from the day when you bring the Omer of the waving — seven weeks, they shall be complete.” — Vayikra 23:15 Sefer HaChinuch: The Torah commands us to count the Omer so we can relive the Exodus from Mitzrayim. Just as the Jews back then anxiously anticipated the great day when they were to receive the Torah, so too we count the days till Shavuos, the Yom Tov that commemorates the giving of the Torah. To the Jews then, accepting the Torah on Har Sinai was even greater than their redemption from slavery. So we count each day to bring ourselves to that sense of great enthusiasm, as if to say, “When will that day come?” With these words the Sefer HaChinuch defines the mitzvah of Sefiras HaOmer. The difficulty with this is the statement that “to the Jews then, receiving of the Torah was even greater than being freed from slavery.” It seems hard to imagine that anything would be greater to a slave than being freed. This concept is even more perplexing when we envision what it was like to be a slave in Mitzrayim. A life of suffering and bloodshed The life of a Jew in Mitzrayim was one of misery and suffering. They had no

4

rights. They had no life. They couldn’t own property, choose their own destiny, or protect their own children. They didn’t even have the right to their own time. A Mitzri could at any moment demand a Jew’s utter and complete compliance to do his bidding. If a Jew walked in the streets, it was every Mitzri’s right to whisk him away, without question and without recourse, and force him into slave labor for whatever he saw fit. Waking in the early morning to the crack of the Mitzri’s whip, the Jews were pushed to the limit of human endurance till late at night when they fell asleep in the fields. Without rest, without breaks, the Jews lugged heavy loads and lifted huge rocks. Sweat, tears, and bloodshed were their lot. In the heat of the sweltering sun and in the cold of the desert night, at the risk of life and limb, the Jew was oppressed with a demon-like fury. A beast of burden is treated wisely to ensure its well-being, but not the Jew. He was pushed beyond all limits. Finally, when Pharaoh was asked to let the Jewish people go, he increased their load, taking it from the impossible to the unimaginable. How could anything in the world be more desirable to the Jews than freedom? How could it be that anything, even something as great as receiving the Torah, could mean more to them than being redeemed from slavery? To advertise, call 718-513-9885

What the Jews experienced by living through the makkos The answer to this question lies in understanding the great level of clarity that the Jews reached by living through the makkos and the splitting of the sea. For ten months, each Jew saw with ever-increasing clarity that HASHEM created, maintains, and orchestrates this world. With absolute certainty, they experienced HASHEM’s presence in their lives. This understanding brought to them to recognize certain core cognitions. Every human has inborn understandings. Often times they are masked and subdued. Whether by environment or by desire, the human spends much of his life running from the truths that he deeply knows. When the Jews in Mitzrayim experienced HASHEM’s power and goodness, they understood the purpose of Creation. They knew that we are creations, put on this planet for a reason. We were given a great opportunity to grow, to accomplish, to mold ourselves into who we will be for eternity. We have a few short, precious years here, and then forever we will enjoy that which we have accomplished. Because they so clearly experienced HASHEM, their view of existence was changed. They “got it.” Because of this, the currency with

which they measured all good changed. They recognized that the greatest good ever bestowed upon man is the ability to change, to mold himself into something different so that he will merit to cling to HASHEM. They recognized that everything that we humans value as important pales in comparison to the opportunity to grow close to HASHEM. Because they understood this point so vividly, to them the greatest good possible was the receiving of the Torah — G-d’s word, the ultimate spiritual experience. And so, while they anxiously anticipated the redemption from slavery as a great good that would free them from physical oppression, they valued the reason they were being freed even more. They were to receive the Torah. Davening is me talking to HASHEM; learning is HASHEM talking to me

PLANING A SHABBATON UPSTATE? We bring you the most heimishe and geshmake Machulim for Shabbos, delivered to your door.

This concept has great relevance in our lives, as we have the ability to tap into this instinctive knowledge of the importance of learning. When a person gets caught up in the temporal nature of this world, the currency with which he rates things changes. The value system now becomes honor, power, career, or creature comforts. That is what he views as good, and that is what he desires. The more a person involves himself in these, the more important they become, and the less precious the Torah becomes. Our natural appreciation of Torah becomes clouded over by other desires and an ever-changing value system. However, the more a person focuses on his purpose in the world, the more he values the Torah. He recognizes it as the formula for human perfection. He now sees the Torah as the ultimate gift given to man because it is both the guide and the fuel to propel his growth. With this changed perspective, the very value system with which he measures things changes, and now his appreciation, love, and desire to learn increase until finally he becomes aligned with that which HASHEM created him for — perfection and closeness to HASHEM . For more on this topic please listen to Shmuz #166 Sefiras HaOmer –

oyous! Overwhelmed! Ecstatic! These words are usually reserved for life’s big ones. Like the time the human resources department called to tell you that you got that dream job. Or when you finally heard the magic words, “It’s a healthy baby.” Lag B’Omer is that kind of day. Close to a quarter of a million people are drawn to the tiny northern Israeli village of Meron, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s final resting place. It is a 24-hour spiritual festival with music, dancing, intense prayers, and a teeming street bazaar where the latest edition of the Zohar (the core text of Jewish mysticism) are raucously hawked alongside pictures of tzaddikim (righteous rabbis), hand-shaped amulets, and colored scarves. Scores of three year olds are there for their first haircut, which will take place in the presence of their family and the tens of thousands of Jews of all stripes and colors who throng to Rabbi Shimon. This all takes place in the midst of

10

Sefirat HaOmer, the 50-day count up between Passover and Shavuot. This time period is accompanied by laws that require a degree of mourning. No weddings. No music. The mourning is a reminder of the terrible death of Rabbi Akiva’s 24,000 students who all passed on during this time period. Then comes Lag B’Omer, like a dazzling diamond in a sea of banal grey. What’s it all about? The famous reason for the joy of Lag B’Omer is that the students of Rabbi Akiva ceased dying on this day. But the reason they stopped dying was because there were no more students left! Is that a reason to celebrate? Why were so many Torah scholars struck down by the plague? The Sages say that they did not treat each other with kavod – respect – and therefore they were stricken with a disease that caused them to choke to death. The Hebrew term kavod shares the same letters as the Hebrew word that means “heavy.” This To advertise, call 718-513-9885

heaviness implies recognizing another person as significant. It means making him feel that you want to listen to him, and that he has a worthwhile message that only he can convey. What makes a person unique? Externally, we may share similar characteristics, but internally our souls are vastly different. Rabbi Akiva’s students failed to recognize that every Jew has infinite value and has a distinctive approach – simply because he is different than all other people. They were punished with choking – a state where a person cannot take in air. Failing to give proper respect to another person means ceasing to take in ruach – spirit. When a person does not honor another Jew, it shows that he has stopped appreciating that person’s unique spirit. My son-in-law Yisrael was almost 20 when he joined our family. I will never forget an incident that happened on one of the very first Shabbats that he shared with us. A family friend dropped in. Yisrael

give of itself. However, the degree to which you identify with the tzaddik is the degree to which the tzaddik will identify with you. On Lag B’Omer when we visit Rabbi Shimon’s tomb we are in essence saying, “Rabbi Shimon, you brought inner meaning and reality into the world, we want to see inner meaning and goodness in ourselves and in other people. Please help us do so.” Wherever you may be this Lag B’Omer, if you take a moment to identify with another’s inner Hashemliness, you will absorb the profound message of the day. noticed my little four-year-old shyly watching the scene. He had been enjoying getting to know his new big brother-in-law but the entrance of another unknown adult caused him to retreat. Yisrael smiled, held out his hand and introduced him to the visitor. “This is my friend Yehudah,” he said of his young brother-in-law. Yehudah beamed. He was a person, worthy of acknowledgment. With this in mind, we can go back to Meron and get a handle on what it’s all about. Every Jew deserves respect, especially a talmid chacham – a Torah sage – because his soul is entwined with Torah. Really knowing someone means knowing his thoughts. Learning Torah means knowing Hashem’s thoughts and bonding your mind to Hashem’s mind. It means inculcating Divine traits and growing close to Hashem. So when one gives respect to a Torah scholar, in essence one gives respect to that part of Hashem that lives inside every great Jew. Why do we celebrate on Lag B’Omer? We rejoice that Rabbi Akiva did not succumb to despair after his monumental loss. We marvel at his exceptional fortitude in gathering five new students and transmitting to them the Oral Tradition we have today. Rabbi Akiva taught, “V’ahavta l’rei’acha kamocha, zeh klal gadol ba’Torah – Love your friend as yourself, this is a prime principle of the Torah.” Torah takes you to a place where you can find Hashem. The first place where you can find Him is within the heart of every Jew. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai was one of the five students of Rabbi Akiva. He revealed the secrets of the Torah – how to find the divine spark within oneself and in other people. Rabbi Shimon said to come to his tomb on the anniversary of his death, Lag B’Omer, and to rejoice. The Maharal quotes the Zohar which says it is easier to build a connection with a tzaddik after his death, because then he is no longer constrained by physicality. Some aspect of the tzaddik’s spirit remains at his resting place and it wishes to

n i s r u o H 24 i a h g n a h S by Dan Fellner

Exploring the city’s inspiring and little-known Jewish history during a one-day visit. SHANGHAI – China’s largest city of 23 million people features one of the most dazzling skylines in the world, a booming economy and a compelling mixture of Eastern and Western cultures. But not many people are aware that Shanghai also offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the history of one the most unique Jewish communities in the Far

16

East. As a city that accepted about 20,000 Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust in Europe, Shanghai became known at the time as a “Noah’s Ark” for Jews who had no other place to go. With only 24 hours to explore the city at the conclusion of an Asian cruise, I opted to take a half-day “Tour of Jewish Shanghai.” It was led by Dvir Bar-Gal, an Israeli-born journalist who has lived in Shanghai for the past 17 years. With a style that was part history professor, part standup-comedian, Dvir taught our group of 15 tourists – mostly Americans – all about Shanghai’s Jewish past and took us to the sites that helped bring to life a Jewish community that once thrived here. We met at the Fairmont Peace Hotel, which was built by Sephardic Jews from Baghdad, who were part of the first wave of Jewish immigrants to Shanghai in the late 19th century. This group included two prominent families – the Sassoons and Kadoories. “People came here with nothing and created an economic empire in the Far To advertise, call 718-513-9885

East,” noted Dvir about the Baghdadi immigrants. A second wave of Jews arrived in the 1920s, Ashkenazim fleeing pogroms and revolutions in Russia.

From the Fairmont, our group walked one block to The Bund, Shanghai’s pedestrian riverfront with a spectacular view across the Huangpu River to the city’s enormous skyscrapers. It was at The Bund where Dvir told us about the third – and most famous – wave of Jewish immigrants. From 1933 to 1941, Shanghai accepted about 20,000 Jewish refugees fleeing the Holocaust. Most came from Germany and Austria, which had stripped Jews of their citizenship and encouraged exile before turning genocidal. Outside of the Dominican Republic, Shanghai was the only place that allowed Jews to enter as it did not require a visa. In fact, by 1939 more European Jews had taken refuge in Shanghai than in any other city in the world. Why did China offer Jews a safehaven from the Nazis when so many other countries turned their backs? Dvir says it wasn’t a conscious decision by the Chinese government. In fact, Shanghai at the time was an international city not completely under Chinese control. Several foreign powers, including the United

18

States, France and the United Kingdom, claimed portions of the city and a visa was not required to enter Shanghai until August 1939. Still, Dvir says once the Jews arrived, they were treated well by the Chinese, who have long been known for their lack of anti-Semitism. Dvir believes there are many reasons for this, including that the

Chinese identify with Jewish suffering, relate to their status as an underdog and were “oppressed themselves by foreign powers.” Jewish life in Shanghai prospered during the 1930s. At one time, there were six functioning synagogues and about 10 Jewish newspapers. Jews lived harmoniously with the Chinese in a section of town called the Hongkou

District, which was dubbed “Little Vienna” because so many Austrian Jews lived there. The final group of Jewish refugees to arrive in Shanghai included about 300 Polish Jews from the famous Mir Yeshiva, which ultimately became the only European yeshiva to emerge from World War II intact. The Jews from Mir Yeshiva first escaped in 1939 from Poland

People came here with nothing and created an economic empire in the Far East,” noted Dvir about the Baghdadi immigrants. to Lithuania, where they received transit visas from the Japanese consulate general in Kovno, Chiune Sugihara. All told, Sugihara issued more than 3,500 visas to Jews, earning him the title “the Japanese Schindler.” With the help of

several overseas Jewish organizations, the Mir Yeshiva students and rabbis and other Jews who had received visas from Sugihara made it safely to Kobe, Japan, before arriving in Shanghai in 1941. During World War II, the Japanese occupied Shanghai, which ended the flow of foreign funds to the Jewish refugees, who were becoming increasingly impoverished. The Japanese also imposed restrictions on where Jews could live, creating a “Designated Area for Stateless Refugees,” better known as the Shanghai Ghetto. Conditions in the ghetto were difficult but a vast majority of Shanghai’s Jews survived the Holocaust. Most emigrated to Israel, the United States, Australia and Hong Kong after the Communists took control of the government in 1949. Dvir drove us by van to the city’s Hongkou District where we walked through narrow streets and parks lined with blooming cherry-blossom trees to explore the traces of what once had been bustling Jewish life in the area. The highlight was a visit to the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum on Changyang Road, which contains exhibits, monuments and an exhibition hall in which more than 140 photos are displayed with a multi-screen projection system. Dvir served as an adviser to the Chinese government when it opened the museum in 2007. The museum also houses the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue, built by Russian Jews in the 1920s. It later became the hub of Jewish life when the community was ghettoized in the 1940s. After the war, the synagogue was confiscated by the Communists and converted into a psychiatric hospital. It reopened in the 1990s and was later restored to its original architectural style in 2007. The building has been inscribed on the list of architectural heritage treasures of Shanghai. Ohel Moshe is not used for religious services and the city has only has only one other remaining synagogue – Ohel

20

Rachel. The largest synagogue in the Far East, Ohel Rachel was built by the Sassoon family in 1920. But it currently does not host services on a regular basis and is not open to visitors.

With no functioning stand-alone synagogues, Shanghai’s current population of about 4,000 Jews have a choice of praying at one of three Chabad branches or in private venues. The tour also included a visit to a home where Jewish refugees once lived and the former site of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which provided immense financial support to Shanghai’s Jewish refugees during their years of hardship. Dvir says about 3,000 tourists take his tour every year, a majority of whom are Americans. “Some people have some knowledge about Jewish life here, but it is vague,” he says. “It comes to life when they take this tour.” After the tour was over, I had a few hours left to enjoy Shanghai before I needed to return to my cruise ship. I chose to see a Chinese acrobat performance at a downtown theater where I watched an amazing array of gymnasts, jugglers and motorcyclists who speedily whirled their vehicles inside a cage. Back on the ship at 10 p.m., I took one last look at the city’s wonderous skyline – lit up like a pinball machine – and reflected on what I had learned during my 24 hours in this crowded and frenetic city. Perhaps an exhibit at the Jewish Refugees Museum best sums up what a Holocaust historian has called “the miracle of Shanghai.” Exhibit commemorating the visit of Yitzchak Rabin In 1993, Yitzhak Rabin, the former Israeli prime minister, visited the site and inscribed the following: “To the people of Shanghai for unique humanitarian act of saving thousands of Jews during the Second World War, thanks in the name of the government of Israel.” For information about booking a Jewish tour on a trip to Shanghai, email shanghaijews@hotmail.com. The cost for a half-day tour is about $70.

How My Parents’ Divorce Impacted My Marriage by Sara Debbie Gutfreund

My difficult childhood is making my marriage stronger.

I

was eight years old when my parents divorced. The afternoon my parents told us that they were separating closed an invisible door on the innocence of my childhood. The world was no longer the secure, predictable place that it had been the day before. Our home was no longer whole; the walls that I thought would always be strong turned out to be flimsy and unreliable. I had to learn at a very young age how to divide my time and my loyalties. I had to be the perfect student and the most accomplished athlete in order to compensate for all of the brokenness and imperfection in my family. In college, one of my friends whose parents were also divorced told me that she was never going to get married. She had learned from her parents’ divorce that marriage was painful and dysfunctional

34

and not worth the heartache. I told her, “I’m going to build a loving marriage because of my parents’ divorce.” She laughed and said, “There is no such thing as a loving marriage so good luck to you.” I understood her bitterness. Part of me wondered whether she was right. And though I was driven to create the warm, secure home that I had so desperately missed as a child, I was worried that I wouldn’t know how. When I met my husband, I really didn’t know what marriage entailed, and it was hard. I had to learn how to build without a blueprint. And I had to figure out how to create my own blueprint. But as our home and our marriage grew, I realized that I was in fact building a deeper connection with my spouse because of my parents’ divorce. Even though I was raised to prioritize To advertise, call 718-513-9885

my career in my life, I chose to make my marriage and my family my top priority. I switched from med school to a masters in psychology so that I could invest more time in my marriage and my children. I didn’t view this as a sacrifice I made for my family; it was an investment I made for myself because creating a warm, loving home was my dream. My parents split up without warning. They didn’t fight much, so I really didn’t see it coming. During the early years of my marriage, I was hyperalert to any disagreement between us. I thought every argument was dangerous, something that could spiral into a force of destruction. Although our marriage is now secure enough for me to know that it can withstand our differences and our disagreements, my fear in the beginning of our marriage actually helped prevent

many arguments from spiraling out of control. I had decided that I would rather be happily married than right and there were very few issues that we allowed to come between us. I chose to have many children. One of the reasons is because I had wanted a big, happy family as a child. The loneliness I felt growing up motivated me to create a different life for my children, and our noisy, warm home perhaps exists because of the silent, empty house that was left in the wake of my parents’ divorce. I understood that a healthy marriage requires good communication, so I became a psychologist so I could study the science of communication and learn how to both listen to and understand others. One of the biggest blessings of coming from a broken home is mental toughness. There are some children who don’t recover from early traumas, but the ones who do are far stronger and more resilient than children who have relatively easier childhoods. This mental toughness has given me the ability to bounce back from the inevitable hardships and stresses that every marriage encounters, and not to take things personally when life fails to meet my expectations. So much of who I am and the kind of life I chose is because of the challenge my parents’ divorce brought into my life. My friend from college was wrong. Loving marriages do exist but they don’t last unless we put in the work and choose love. Sometimes the hardest childhoods motivate us to make that crucial choice and give us the strength to overcome the obstacles in our way.

Spring Menu

by Gitta Bixenspanner

Light meals to welcome the spring season. Spring is in the air. Days are longer, sunnier and warmer. It is time to pack away our winter paraphernalia especially in the Northern Hemisphere. That warrants a lighter menu to help us shed the unwanted winter pounds. Gardens are starting to bud, and looking around the supermarket, we will notice many green produce that auger in the spring season. You will find dandelions, burdock, beets, and arugula, as well as white and red radish with their leaves, along with spinach, endives and many others. These greens are beneficial for us and they taste delicious in salads. Some also lend themselves to light cooking.

Roasted Red Pepper and Hummus Wraps Roasted red peppers and hummus make a lovely combination. To roast red peppers, choose 4 firm nice red peppers. Seed and wash them thoroughly and cut them in half. Place them in a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes until charred. Remove from oven and cover tightly for 10 minutes with a dishtowel or silver foil. Open up the wrapping and you will find that peppers will peel easily. Cut peppers into thin strips and mix with 1 cup prepared hummus. Ingredients 8 leaves of your favorite green leaves 4 large whole wheat wraps 1 cup (250 gr.) roasted red pepper Hummus 1/2 cup (125 gr.) grated carrots 1/2 cup (125 gr.) thinly sliced cucumbers 1/2 cup (125 gr.) variety of sprouts (optional)

44

Preparation: Place 2 lettuce leaves on each wrap. Spread hummus evenly over each. Sprinkle with carrots, cucumber, and sprouts (if using). Tuck sides over filling; roll up from end. Cut each diagonally in half. Wrap in silver foil. Feel free to make more wraps and fill them with tuna or eggs salad (instead of Hummus) over greens. Send extra wraps for lunch the next day, your children will thank you. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 4

Warm Chicken Salad with Pine Nuts Combining lettuce greens with the protein (chicken) transforms this salad into a favorite, with the best of the vegetable and protein worlds. Poaching chicken breasts in a mixture of balsamic vinegar and chicken broth makes them unusually tender. The poaching liquid then becomes the base for a slightly sweet, intensely flavored dressing.

2 Tbs chopped fresh parsley, preferably flat-leaved Instructions Combine broth, vinegar, garlic, 1 teaspoon rosemary and bay leaf in a wide saucepan or Dutch oven. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Add chicken breasts, cover and poach gently just until the flesh is no longer pink inside, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and keep warm.

Ingredients 3 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth (homemade chicken soup works well) 3/4 cup (Kedem or other) balsamic vinegar 4 cloves garlic, peeled and halved 1 tsp rosemary (a spice) optional 1 bay leaf 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trimmed (1 pound total) 2 Tbs extra-virgin olive oil 1 Tbs chopped shallots/onions Salt and pepper to taste 6 cups torn mixed salad greens, such as curly endive, escarole, spinach, Belgian endive, arugula, radicchio and/or watercress, washed and thoroughly dried 2 medium red bell peppers roasted (see recipe above) and cut into thin strips 1 Tbs pine nuts, toasted

48

Boil the poaching liquid until slightly reduced, about 5 minutes. Strain, discard garlic and bay leaf and pour 1/2 cup poaching liquid into a small bowl. Whisk in oil, shallots and pepper. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss greens in a large bowl with 1/4 cup of the dressing. Arrange on individual plates. Carve chicken into thin slices and arrange over greens. Garnish with red pepper and drizzle the remaining dressing over all ingredients. Sprinkle pine nuts, parsley and remaining 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary over the chicken. Jello Fruit Mold Ingredients 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 1/2 cup sugar 2 1/2 cup late harvest Riesling or other sweet white wine 2 Tbs fresh lemon juice 2 cup seedless red grapes, chilled 2 cup seedless green grapes, chilled

Pour gelatin mixture into 9” by 5” loaf pan. Refrigerate 1 1/2 hours to let it set slightly. Add grapes, distributing evenly; cover and refrigerate overnight, until firm. To unmold the dessert, place loaf pan up to rim in bowl or sink of warm, not hot, water 4 to 5 seconds. Remove pan from water. Insert small metal spatula around edge of pan to release gelatin. Dry outside of pan. Place serving plate on top of loaf pan, and grasping both together, invert Jello onto plate. Cut into slices to serve.

Directions In cup, evenly sprinkle gelatin over ½ cup water. Let stand 2 minutes to allow gelatin to absorb liquid and soften slightly. In 2-quart saucepan, heat sugar and 1 cup Riesling on medium-low, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Stir in softened gelatin mixture, and heat 1 to 2 minutes or until gelatin dissolves, stirring frequently. Remove saucepan from heat. Stir in lemon juice and remaining 1 1/2 cups Riesling.

50

This molded dessert can stay in the fridge up to 4 days, feel free to make it ahead. P.S. This works just as well in a Bundt pan, with a mixture of your favorite spring fruits. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 8-10
