The Shmuz on the Parsha
Rabbi Ben Tzion Shafier
Parshas BaHalosecha
Hishtadlus for a Dvar Mitzvah
T
his is the workmanship of the menorah, hammered out of gold, from it base to its flower, it is hammered out; according to the vision that HASHEM showed Moshe, so did he make the Menorah. — Bamidbar 8:4 Moshe Rabbeinu was charged with the construction of the Mishkan, the dwelling place of HASHEM in this world. While the components of the structure are physically complex, the kavannas — the specific intentions required during the process of building it — are even more intricate. The most complicated of all of the vessels was the menorah. Its design was so elaborate that even after HASHEM taught Moshe how it was to be built, Moshe still didn’t understand its unique nature and was unable to form it. Therefore, HASHEM showed Moshe an image of a menorah made of fire so that Moshe could actually see the finished form and imitate it. Yet Rashi tells us that when it came time for the construction of the menorah, Moshe still could not fathom its structure and was unable to fabricate it. HASHEM said, “Throw the clump of gold into the fire, and it will form by itself.” This is how the menorah was created — on its own. This Rashi is perplexing. Since the menorah was so intricate that Moshe could not understand its inner nature and how to form it, then why did HASHEM bother to show him the image of the menorah in fire?
4
HASHEM knew that Moshe wasn’t going to be able to create the menorah himself. He knew that in the end it would have to come about by Moshe’s throwing the clump of gold into the fire. If so, why did HASHEM show Moshe the image of the menorah so that he should understand how it was to be formed? Clearly, creating the menorah was beyond human capacity. Why did Moshe need to have a clear image of what it was to look like? Balance of bitachon and hishtadlus The answer to this question is predicated on understanding the balance between HASHEM’s involvement in the running of the world and man’s obligation to put in his effort — the balance between bitachon and hishtadlus. One of the basic facts of life is that HASHEM runs this world. While it may appear that man is in charge, HASHEM orchestrates every activity on the planet. As we say in the first Ani Mamin: “HASHEM did, does and will do all actions.”
we are sick, even though we know that our health is determined solely by HASHEM. We are obligated to go to great lengths to protect ourselves even though we know that whether we live or die has been predetermined. We put in our effort, knowing all the while that it is HASHEM’s world and that He alone determines the outcome. When we accomplish something, the results are credited to us even though we are fully aware that HASHEM was the One Who did it all. We merely went through the motions. We use HASHEM’s system, and are credited with having done it. If I feed my family, I am considered their supporter. If I give tzedakah, it is considered that I gave my own money and I am credited with having saved a poor man from starvation. In HASHEM’s system, we are credited with the outcome.
The question is: what is man’s part? If HASHEM determines all outcomes, how is man supposed to act? What is his role? How much effort should I put in? The Chovos Ha’Levovos teaches us that we are obligated to act b’derech hatevah – in the ways of the world. In other words, we are obligated to go through the motions as if the results are dependent upon us, knowing all the while that the outcome is completely out of our hands.
Answer: Why Moshe needed to see the image of the menorah This seems to be the answer to the question on Rashi. HASHEM wanted the menorah to be constructed by man. However, even the greatest of men couldn’t comprehend how to make it. So his hishtadlus was to do all that he could and then rely on HASHEM for the rest. Moshe would put the gold into the fire, and the menorah would form on its own. Moshe used the system that HASHEM created to bring forth the menorah.
We work for a living, knowing that the amount of money we are to make has been set on Rosh Hashanah. We go to doctors when
However, for the creation of the menorah to be credited to man, Moshe had to at least have a vision of what it was that he was

creating. Once he had that concept in mind, throwing the clump of gold into the fire was considered as if he made the menorah himself. It was then considered as if he used HASHEM’s system to bring about this result. If Moshe didn’t have a clear vision of what it was that he was creating, then in no sense could it be considered something he made — it would have been the fire that made it. Once he knew what it was that he was setting out to make, he then harnessed a force that HASHEM created to bring about that result. In this case, the force was the fire bringing about the menorah. In Our Lives This concept has great relevance to us in a number of ways. The first is that in all of our involvement in this world, we need to have a clear plan of action, a “business plan” that according to the ways of the world makes sense. With that in hand, we set off on a path with a vision of its fulfillment, all the while knowing that the outcome is completely in the hands of HASHEM.
the fire, relying on HASHEM to bring his efforts into fruition. For more on this topic please listen to Shmuz #51 - Bitachon and Hishtadlus – Finding the Balance

Nevertheless, there are many situations in which we reach a point where there is no clear path to follow. Whether it be deciding from two almost identical career choices, determining which medical “expert” to listen to, or deciding which school to enroll our children in, we are obligated to be responsible, use our best judgment, and determine according to the ways of the world what is the best approach. Once we have reached that point, we “throw our clump of gold into the fire.” We rely on HASHEM to bring about the results that He has predetermined to be the best for us. However, this Rashi seems to be showing us that when it comes to a Dvar Mitzvah, the rules change somewhat. There will be times when a person sets out to accomplish something for the tzibbur, whether it be starting a Yeshiva, giving a shiur, or beginning a chessed project, and he sees no clear path to follow. Either the odds against it are too great, or the mountain is to high to climb, and he can’t see how to make this happen. If this were a mundane project, it could be that he wouldn’t be allowed to move forward. However, if this is a holy project, then the rules of engagement change a bit. Provided, that he has a clear image of what it is that he setting out to accomplish, and he has an image of the finished product, he may be permitted to step forward and allow HASHEM to bring things about. He has to throw his lump of gold into

AND RETURNING…
to them, to knock on their door and see them up close. And if you really want to, it will happen. I’ve tried it. But then, you notice the whole picture, and that’s where the complications develop. You don’t necessarily see the negative side, although you might realize the flaws and imperfections you never had the opportunity to know about before—but even just seeing the stark realness, the humanity, of the person is surprisingly disappointing. My epiphanies in life: Celebrities have younger siblings and strict parents and get wrinkles when they get old? Our school pays hundreds of dollars to bring these well-renowned Torah speakers to teach us? Homeless people have the opportunity to go to free shelters? My phone calls to the White House Comment Line didn’t have any affect? The president did that? Seminary girls do that? Yeshiva bachurim smoke? “You’re so naive,” my friends told me, laughing. “We’ve known that for ages.” And they were right, I was naive. But was it really so bad to think that way? Everyone bashes idealism, subconsciously associating it with socialism and communism and every other utopia and kibbutz-like existence. And yes, floating in clouds one’s whole life is the wrong way to live; we should be realistic. But why be cynical from

day one? Why not believe in the good of people when you’re still young?
“We’ve known that for ages,” they told me. I feel bad for them. They’ve missed out. Yes, the bubble must someday pop, and the cloud of fairy-tale quality gradually dissipates. But why burst it yourself? Why wave away that cloud when you can just let it take its time? Why not watch that beautiful, albeit unreal, bubble float away and enjoy its pleasantness for as long as you can? Because once the image has become sharper, and you notice corners and eye colors and defined edges, once the romantic character becomes just a normal person, you realize that you’ll never think of them the same way again. It takes a great deal of courage and maturity to still admire those disenchanted people, those imaginary characters—who, in reality, are plain and ordinary like the rest us—for the good they do, for the positive we always saw in them before the quirks and

flaws surfaced. Yet when we succeed in creating and painting the real pictures of our champions, and accepting their entire characters, we actually become closer to them than before.
TIME: FRIEND OR FOE? By Malky Hollander I counted down the days R eunion! in heady anticipation. Our last classmate was getting married, baruch Hashem, at the age of 25, and my class looked forward to our first reunion since our graduation, six years earlier. Weeks before the wedding, chain calls buzzed down the class list reminding everyone to come, and come on time. Some classmates would be making a trip of an hour or even two each way to participate in the wedding, but they knew it was well worth it. The reunion promised to be as exciting an experience as meeting friends after such a long and life-altering break can be. I imagined the surprises that surely awaited me. Six years was a long time, at least for women in their twenties, and so much must have changed. My classmates had married, some moved away, had children, hopefully, and probably held down some kind of job. Each of them had made a new life for herself.
I walked into the hall and spotted the table immediately. It was abuzz with excited chatter, even occasional shrieks. There was Shany, and Chaya, and Rina. And Goldy! I hadn’t seen her since her wedding. And there was Tova with her twin babies! And who was that near her in the short black sheitel? Could it be Naomi? Wow, how she’d changed! And there was Perel walking toward the table; she’d come in from Lakewood, my more knowledgeable friends were saying. Time. My, did it change things. Then Malka joined the table. She sat down near—my heart skipped a beat— Roizy. Roizy had always been a nice, well-meaning, and well, very plump girl.
C S One girl who makes a difference…
She had never made it socially, lacking sorely in self-confidence; I don’t know what led to what. Most of us had tried to be nice to her, and somehow she survived the school years. Which was really a miracle with Malka in our class. Malka had been the thin, tall, and popular girl who had everything going for her. She always had a knot of admiring girls around her, earned by her charisma and wit. Roizy rubbed her the wrong way. She always said the wrong thing at the wrong time, and her appearance was not pleasing, either. Malka deftly kept Roizy out of her social circle, not in an overt manner, as that would be unfit

for supposedly mature high school girls, but directly enough for Roizy to be humiliated. Whenever Malka was around, Roizy suffered. Now I watched Malka sit down near Roizy, whom she only noticed after she’d taken her seat. Roizy, who was now not fat, but positively obese, smiled and chirped a friendly hello. I held my breath. How would six years change this scene? Malka nodded, smiling thinly, and went on to share excited greetings with other classmates. She didn’t so much as acknowledge Roizy’s presence past that first moment. The tears came so fast, I had to escape to the bathroom before they’d be noticed. Time had betrayed me.
the halachos of shemiras halashon and has an obvious interest in growing in that area, too, which in turn will positively influence her charges. When a leader is positive, the girls catch on to the energy. One friend told me that the girls in her group argue over which one will host the next shemiras halashon gathering! Everyone vies for the chance to be the hostess!

Lifestyle interviewed Shaina Becker, a sixteen-year-old shemiras halashon leader in Yerushalayim. JL: Hi, Shaina! We want to hear about your work in shemiras halashon. Can you tell us what your job entails?
SB: Every shemiras halashon leader is assigned a group consisting of one or two classes (between 3060 girls) which assembles every Friday night to learn the halachos of shemiras halashon. Smaller groups get together in someone’s house, and larger groups, like my group of 60 second-graders, meet in a classroom. We start half an hour after candle lighting, davening Kabbalas Shabbos together. Then we begin the shemiras halashon activity. For younger grades, there is a story, skit, or game with a shemiras halashon mesage, and in older grades, they learn the actual halachos. Every leader is equipped with a booklet
JL: What qualities do you think a girl needs to have to be a successful shemiras halashon leader?
SB: I think the most important thing to have, and display, is a positive attitude toward the girls. When you come in with a ready smile for everyone and the girls feel your interest in them, they will be eager to learn. Also, a leader has to know what interests her group and how she can best reach them. Some groups learn best with stories, others with skits, and yet others with games. A leader has to adjust her agenda to fit her group’s interests. And finally, when a leader learns the two daily halachos herself, she can be a real role model for her group. She is also knowledgeable in

JL: Do you see positive changes in the girls? SB: Yes, definitely. The girls listen carefully and internalize the ideas, and I can see that they remember the stories and halachos from previous weeks. Also, I see that they actively apply the lessons we learned. Once, when a girl started saying something, her friend interrupted her, “Don’t you remember that we learned that we’re not allowed to…” It gives me so much chizzuk to see that the girls are growing. JL: May you continue to have hatzlachah in everything you do.

Chronic Pain Diagnostic Specialist Owner & Clinical Director
“Before I came to Allcare Pain Elimination For Life Clinic, I had 8 months of pain in my shoulder and had 2 months of a traditional Physical and had no relief of my shoulder pain, the other Therapy place had me doing some shoulder exercises that did not help. After I arrived at Allcare I was finally diagnosed for the root cause versus the symptom of my shoulder pain. Allcare worked on my C8 Neck joint to free up the nerver that was causing my shoulder pain and did it in 8 visits!”
“I was working out one day and injured my right shoulder and got shoulder tendnitis. I went into deep depression because I was frustrated that I couldn’t lift my shoulder and move my hand up or around or anything, One of my doctors referred me to Allcare. Thanks to the team that cared about me I was finally able to lift my hand, and I have full range of motion without pain or limitations now! Now I can do anything thanks to Allcare Pain Elimination For Life, I always recommend this place to everybody that I see, and this is the place to get better…”

The Nazi & the JewDoctor by Rabbi Dr. David Fox

e was not an imposing man, short, tidily groomed. I did not sense anything intimidating about him as he faced me in the office. But his eyes were striking – cold, metallic grey, locked upon mine with an unwavering gaze as he spit out his reason for making the appointment. His wife had become paralyzed following an accident and could not speak, move or respond to anyone. She lay in bed, staring. No communication, no relationship. His reason for seeing me? “Because all of my friends say I should just dump her and move on, but in my heart I needed to ask a… Jew-doctor.” He said it casually without a smirk or taunt. He went on. “I might as well tell you that you may have a hard time working with me. I am a member of the American Nazi Party. I have also been a Klansman.” This was said without a sinister air, with no sense of menace. He wanted me to know from the start that I might I feel uneasy

working with someone who, well, considered me a “Jew-doctor.” I was prepared to offer him respectful support. But, within my mind, I was eager to learn why his heart had prompted him to seek out a Jewish psychologist. “I want you to know doctor that I detest the Jews as a group, just like I oppose all other aliens who don’t belong in our country. But that’s not to say that I don’t recognize that some of you people are good at what you do. You make good accountants. You are great lawyers, doctors too. What I want from you is to tell me what you people would do if you were in my shoes.” I still did not get it. This man was a racist, detested “my people”, but chose me to find out what a Jew would do if faced with his predicament. How could I possibly prescribe to him “the Jewish solution” if this man would have been content with “the Final Solution”? How would it matter to him if a solitary (Jewish) opinion might conflict with the recommendation of his bigoted peers To advertise, call 718-513-9885
who advised him to leave his non-functioning wife? Was this a matter of him needing to appease his soul, doing due diligence by seeking a second opinion from me, or was this a matter of conscience, if indeed he had one? He had already shared with me some of the criminal activities which he had been part of in his vigilante escapades. Was he having pangs of guilt, but only about deserting his wife of many years? Was it love that kept him bound to her, or was there some deeper dynamic banging at the basement door of his mind? As the weeks went by, he began to loosen up. He had begun to trust me enough to share his emotional torment, in small pieces. The cold stare was still very present, but so were the occasional tear drops which dampened those steely eyes. His marriage was once good. She was
