The Five Star Hotel Called Life

“After these matters, HASHEM appeared to Avram in a dream and said, “Do not fear, Avram. I will guard you. Your reward is great.” Bereishis 16:1

W

hen Avrohom Avinu was informed that his nephew, Lot, was captured, against all odds and in a most courageous manner, he waged war against the combined armies of the four kings. Miraculously, he was victorious and freed Lot. After these events, HASHEM appeared to Avrohom and said, “Do not fear; your reward is great.” Rashi explains that Avrohom was afraid that since this great miracle had been done for him, he had used up all of his merits and had no reward waiting for him in the World to Come. HASHEM allayed those fears by saying, “Everything that I have done for you will not cost you. Do not fear; your reward is great.” This Rashi is very difficult to understand. How is it possible that a man as great Avrohom could have thought that he used up all of his reward? After years and years of serving HASHEM, surely the reward waiting for him was phenomenal. The answer to this is based on viewing life from a different vantage point.

Pesach in Arizona

Imagine that your father-in-law invites you to join him for Pesach in Sedona, Arizona. This is the ultimate Pesach extravaganza. No expense is spared; the guests are showered with every imaginable luxury and amenity. A five-star hotel, French chefs, an 18-hole golf course on premises – the best of the best. You graciously accept and are ready to have the time of your life. But as it turns out, by the time Pesach comes around, things at work aren’t going well, and lately you’ve been fighting with your wife, as a result, you’re in the worst mood you’ve ever been in. For the nine days that you are there, you barely leave your hotel room.

4

When the vacation is over, your fatherin-law approaches the hotel manager, and says, “My son-in-law hardly ate the entire time he was here. He didn’t come to a single gala Kiddush. He didn’t use the golf course. Not once did he step foot in the spa. Normally, I am not the type to complain. But I just can’t see paying the regular rate, so I’ve decided to pay half the bill, and expect you to waive the other half.” How do you think the hotel representative would respond?

Earth: A Five Star Hotel

This planet that we occupy is a fivestar hotel. We have every imaginable pleasure and amenity available to us. We enjoy majestic sights and experiences that constantly surround us. From magnificent floral scenes to exotic sea life, from the glory of the night sky to the clear aqua green of the ocean, from a flower in bloom to the plumage of a jungle parrot, all of the pomp and ceremony of a sunrise – a world created in Technicolor. And more than that, we were given the tools with which to enjoy it. We have legs with which to walk and hands with which to hold. We have ears, a tongue, a nose, and fingers that bring us an astounding array of pleasures from the world around us. We have foods that explode with a burst of different flavors, aromas, textures, and colors. We are surrounded by untold pleasures and riches. But more than anything, we have been granted the extraordinary privilege called life. We were given this golden opportunity to shape ourselves into what we can be for eternity. Is there any way to measure the value of life? Is it worth a million dollars? Ten million? A hundred billion? Is it even possible to put a value on our existence? Whether we recognize it for its extraordinary value or not, we are the To advertise, call 718-513-9885

recipients of an unfathomable amount of good. And as such, we owe. From the moment that we are born, the clock starts ticking and the debt begins. For every breath that we breathe, for every pleasure we enjoy, for every moment of our being, the bill increases. We owe our Creator for that which He has given us.

No Free Lunch

Somehow, we assume that all of the pleasures of this world are free – on the house. I certainly won’t be charged for them. However, the Chovos Ha’Levovos explains that in reality, we do owe for them. They were given to us by HASHEM, and as a result we owe for them. For this reason, Avrohom was afraid. He made a calculation based on what he received from HASHEM versus what he had given in return, and he came out only slightly ahead. “Now that HASHEM has brought this great miracle for me,” he thought, “what possible reward do I have left? Surely it has been all used up, and there is nothing left for me in the World to Come.” Avrohom Avinu wasn’t out of touch with reality. Quite the opposite, he was highly attuned to a part of the calculation that we rarely think about—we are not entitled to anything. HASHEM didn’t have to create us. HASHEM isn’t obligated to shower us with good. Everything that HASHEM gives to us is because He is wants to share of His good with us. Because of this, we owe a debt to HASHEM that can never be repaid. This perspective should be a major driving force in our serving HASHEM – prompting us to attempt as much as we can to pay back the astounding good that HASHEM constantly bestows upon us. Winter Blues SAD (SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER)

A

re the gray skies of winter making you feel blue? Do you feel tired, like you lost your spark, need extra sleep, and can’t get control of your appetite? If you nod in agreement to these questions, you may be one of the millions of people affected by SAD (seasonal affective disorder) also known as the “winter blues.” Experts who study the winter blahs now acknowledge that you can blame much of winter’s crankiness, moodiness, and restlessness on short, cloudy days and a lack of sunlight. Low levels of sunlight trigger changes in hormones, increasing levels of melatonin (a hormone that normally helps you go to sleep) and decreasing serotonin ( a hormone that improves mood). For many people, this hormonal tumult translates into a craving for sugary foods and a need for more sleep. Although the exact cause of SAD is not known, researchers believe the pineal gland plays an important role in this disorder. This gland, located beneath the brain, makes melatonin in response to the amount of light that enters your eyes. Melatonin hormone is only produced in darkness. The darker your bedroom, the greater your melatonin production. Conversely, melatonin production usually stops in the morning when you

8

open your eyes to the day’s new light. But research shows that the production of melatonin climbs too high in people who suffer from SAD. That excessive amount of the hormone results in a sedative effect upon the body. Many people with SAD suffer muscular aches and pains, along with headaches and a faltering immune system. Consequently, they often feel like they have the flu all winter long.

Blue Lady

More women than men suffer from SAD (and apparently, depression in general), though the reason is unclear. According to Norman Rosenthal, M.D., author of Winter Blues, about 6 percent of the US population may suffer from SAD, with an additional 14 percent suffering from subsyndromal (less severe) SAD. Because less sunlight reaches the northern latitudes, people in Washington State and Alaska suffer the highest rates of SAD. People in sun-soaked Florida suffer the least. How do you escape SAD? If a winter vacation to the sunny South is out of the question for you, a natural program can brighten the wintry gray day and provide relief.

Turn on the Light To advertise, call 718-513-9885

The most common treatment for SAD is light (also called phototherapy), which cuts back the body’s manufacture of melatonin. Sitting in front of a special light box for about 30 minutes each morning during the winter months can often offset SAD. But the effects of this treatment vary from individual to individual, and some may be more sensitive to the light therapy than others. For artificial light treatment, consult an appropriately trained healthcare professional who can design a plan that finds the optimal intensity, length, and time of day for the treatment that best works for you. Researchers at Columbia University have found that timing the light therapy with the nuances of a person’s biological clock doubles its effectiveness. On the other hand, walking in natural light can banish these problems, and research finds that natural light frequently offers the best results. The people in this particular study either participated in a daily walk outdoors in natural light or were treated for half an hour in artificial light. At the end of the study, participants were tested for melatonin and cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Both were found to be lower after exposure to natural light than artificial light. Roll up those sleeves when you’re

outdoors this winter: Curiously enough, studies show that light produces physiological effects by being absorbed through both the eyes and the skin. Research now shows that light on the skin alters the hemoglobin in the blood. “This research suggests that SAD might be a disorder of the blood rather than a brain disorder,” says Dan A. Oren, MD., of the Yale University School of Medicine.

Vitamin D Need

If you suffer from seasonal depression, you may also not be getting enough vitamin D. During the sun-reduced winter months, stores of this fatsoluble vitamin drop, since the skin makes it when exposed to sunlight. When you step out into daylight, the sebaceous glands near the surface of your body produce an oily substance from cholesterol that rises to the skin’s surface. Then, ultraviolet B rays from the sun convert this oily substance (7-dehydrocholesterol) into what is called previtamin D3. Finally, body heat converts previtamin D3 into vitamin D3 (a form of vitamin D). Twenty minutes of daily sunlight exposure on the hands, arms, and face can give adequate amounts of vitamin D to lightskinned people. Dark-skinned people may need longer exposure. Supplements can help: In one study, researchers found that people who took vitamin D had significant improvement in depression scale scores. As far as vitamin D production goes, you can never receive too much sunlight (although overexposure resulting in a burn is never a good idea). The body absorbs vitamin D from the skin as needed and never accepts more than is required. (If you take supplements, follow package directions so you don’t get too much of a good thing.) Food sources of vitamin D include eggs, fortified milk, cod liver oil, salmon, and other fish.

Walk Away the Blues

Research also shows that exercise can chase away the winter blues and that a little bit of exertion goes a long way. Exercise physiologists at Duke University found that little as eight minutes of physical activity can improve your mood. Exercise stimulates the brain to produce endorphins, feel-good hormones that help reduce pain and depression. Physical activity can also increase serotonin levels, those neurotransmitters that brighten emotions. These two hormones work together to make you feel better: Serotonin improves the functioning of your mind while endorphins produce beneficial effects on your body. In one study, researchers reported that exercise increased vitality and improved mood even in case of prolonged depression. To banish SAD, engage in an outdoor activity in natural light, or get active indoors under bright lights. As you can see, much of the research into low, wintry moods suggest that sun worshippers may have been right all along: Exposure in winter to our friendly, local neighborhood star offers impressive mood benefits.

Soothe Your Brain to Escape the Winter Blues B Vitamins: All of the B vitamins play a role in mood, but it appears that B12 and folic acid may have the biggest impact. When vitamin B12 levels drop, your body cannot convert the amino acid methionine into the natural chemical SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine). SAMe is involved in the functioning of serotonin, dopamine, and gammaamino-butyric-acid (GABA), which are all needed to keep your mood up. This synthesis is often impaired in depressed persons, and a lack of adequate B12 may be the culprit. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Several clinical studies show that omega-3 fatty acids can allay depression and other mood disorders. The brain needs fatty acids to keep cell membranes functioning and nerve calls healthy. When omega-3 fatty acids are lacking, the body does not break down serotonin, epinephrine, and dopamine effectively, and those brain chemicals can then wreak havoc with emotions. These fats are found in seaweed, flax, and all fish, particularly cold water fish such as salmon, halibut, and cod. St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum): Often the herb of choice to relieve symptoms of mild, chronic depression and symptoms of SAD. While some have worried that hypericum, one of the active ingredients in St. John’s wort, may make you more sensitive to sunlight, the photosensitizing effect may actually be of benefit to people with SAD, allowing sunlight to produce stronger anti-SAD effects. Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa): May lessen mood swings. Also as an added benefit, black cohosh works as an antioxidant, protecting DNA against damage.

The Indian Princess who Fought Nazis by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller

Noor Inayat Khan courageously spied for Britain behind enemy lines.

N

oor Inayat Khan, a descendent of Indian royalty, was a great heroine of World War II. Though her story is little known, she provided crucial aid to the Allied war effort and its fight against Nazi Germany. Her great great grandfather was Tipu Sultan, Sultan of the Muslim kingdom Mysore in India who fiercely battled invading British forces and died in battle in 1799. Noor’s father Hazrat Inayat Kahan was a Muslim Sufi mystic and musician who married an American, Ora Ray Baker, and moved with her to Moscow, where they started a family. They eventually moved to Paris and enjoyed a cultured, artistic life. They lived in a house named “Fazil Manzil”, House of Blessings, on the outskirts of Paris.

18

Noor, their eldest daughter, studied music at the Paris Conservatory and child psychology at the Sorbonne and became a popular children’s book author. Her book, Twenty Jakata Tales, was published in 1939. After the fall of France in 1940, the Khan family fled, catching the last boat out of France to England. There, Noor and her brother Vilayat joined the war effort, signing up to fight with British forces. Fighting wasn’t a natural choice for Noor. An avowed pacifist, she also bitterly opposed British rule of India. She was also extremely gentle and soft spoken. Noor’s friend Jean Overton later recalled: “Noor was the quietest person it was possible to imagine. Her voice was so slight and soft so as sometimes scarcely to be audible.” Yet faced with the barbarity of Nazism, Noor didn’t hesitate and joined Britain’s To advertise, call 718-513-9885

Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). As the war escalated, Britain’s Prime Minister Winston Churchill realized that the Allies needed more intelligence about what was happening behind Nazi lines. He ordered a top-secret project to “set Europe ablaze”: a team of crack radio operators who could penetrate behind enemy lines and broadcast secret reports back to Britain. This mission was almost impossibly difficult; radio operators would be working alone in Nazi occupied Europe, spying on authorities. They had to lug heavy radio equipment which made it difficult to disguise themselves and to move quickly. Spies had to find room to set up undetected bases and were in constant danger of giving their locations away with every broadcast they made. With almost all available men already in fighting units,

Special Operations Executive (SOE) in covert warfare and spycraft. At first, some British officials questioned her suitability. But her fluent French, her knowledge of Paris, and her commitment to the Allied cause won them over. In June 1943 Noor was given the codename “Madeline” and parachuted into France behind enemy lines, tasked with meeting up with the resistance network in Paris codenamed “Prosper”. She knew that if captured, she faced torture and certain death. Noor started working with her fellow spies, but disaster struck within a week. The spy ring was compromised and many radio operators were arrested. Noor’s handlers back in England told her to evacuate France immediately to save her life, but Noor chose to remain. She was now the only radio operator in the network – Britain’s sole radio contact in all of Paris. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1943, Noor moved around France, taking her radio equipment with her, finding

and setting up safe areas from which to broadcast. For four and a half months, she evaded capture and sent a regular series of coded broadcasts from Paris to London. It was later estimated that in those months, she performed the work it would normally have taken six operators to do. In October 1943, Noor was betrayed to the Gestapo. It’s thought that she was turned in by Renee Garry, whose brother was Noor’s first contact in Paris. Noor was arrested and sent to the Gestapo’s infamous headquarters at 84 Avenue Foch in Paris where prisoners’ screams could be heard coming from the building day and night. Tragically, Nazi officials were able to find records of Noor’s broadcasts and used them to send their own signals to London, luring new British spies to France - and right into the Gestapo’s trap. Although Gestapo headquarters were tightly guarded, Noor managed to break out of her cell and escape. The Gestapo tracked her down and arrested her just hours later. Now classified as “highly

dangerous”, Noor was sent to Pforzhem prison in Germany where she was tortured and kept in chains in isolation for ten agonizing months. Despite being repeatedly questioned and tortured, Noor refused to divulge secrets about the radio transmission program and the identities of her fellow operators. In September 1944, Noor and three other female spies were transferred to the Dachau concentration camp where they were shot on September 13. Noor was only 30 years old. Witnesses recalled that the last word she said moments before her murder was “Liberte”. Noor Inayat Khan, descendent of Muslim royalty, embodied Hillel’s maxim, “In place where there are no leaders, strive to be a leader” (Pirkei Avot 2:5). Refusing to sit on the sidelines, she made the ultimate sacrifice in fighting the Nazis. Her courageous example deserves to be widely known.

Minestrone with Butternut squash Soup This clean eating minestrone soup is based on the idea of throwing pantry and freezer staples together to make a wholesome and filling vegetarian meal. It does have one ingredient that makes it extra special – butternut squash! The butternut squash in this soup really kicks it up a notch and adds an extra layer of flavor that you’ll really enjoy. If you haven’t worked with butternut squash before, there are two different ways to purchase it: whole or pre-cut. If you decide to purchase the butternut squash whole (which is the most frugal option), you will need to slice off the top and bottom using a sharp knife, peel, and seed the squash prior to cutting it into cubes. You can serve this soup alone or serve with a toasted slice of garlic bread for dipping in the soup. We love homemade garlic pita chips served with any soup or dip. Ingredients 2 Tbs olive oil 1 yellow onion, chopped 2 medium carrots, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 4 cups vegetable broth 4 cups water 1 (8 oz) can tomato paste 2 1/2 cups peeled and cubed baking potato 1 cup green beans cut into 1 inch pieces 2 cups frozen chopped spinach

2 1/2 cups peeled and cubed butternut squash 1 (16 oz.) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup whole wheat orzo pasta Directions: Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat in a large pot. Add the onion and carrots and stir until the begin to soften – about 3 minutes. Mix in the garlic and continue to cook for another minute. Stir in the vegetable broth, water, and tomato paste. Nutritious Slow Cooker Lentil Stew Lentils are nourishing and delicious. This protein and vegetables all in one easy to prepare meal, is ideal for this time of year; there is something very comforting about lentils. They feel homey and nurturing. After Yom Tov my guest and I were reviewing the menus I had prepared for the season and she piped up, “You know what I am really craving after all these rich meals? A good lentil stew!” I like this recipe simply for it’s ease. You can’t get much simpler than using your slow cooker. Plus, it’s a wonderful Meatless Monday dish to come home to after your first day back at work for the week.

Ingredients: 2 cups dry lentils 8 cups vegetable stock, no sugar added, low sodium is best 1 lb. bag baby carrots 1 1/2 cups sliced celery 1 tbsp. onion powder 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar Salt to taste after cooking Directions: Soak lentils for four hours to bring out their full strength. Rinse off and combine all ingredients in your slow cooker and cook for 8-10 hours on low, or until the lentils are fully cooked. (Makes approximately 9 cups)

WHAT IS KNEE DEROTATION REALIGNMENT TECHNOLOGY?

Functional electrical stimulation of gluteus medius have shown that once the muscle is turned on the hip levels out and unpinches the inside of the knee during walking. Unicompartmental arthritis is what doctors call the pain on the inner part of your knee and worn out meniscus. This is exactly what we attempt to decompress using this derotation method. During the derotation, we use a tool called deep muscle stimulator to break up the scar tissue in the inner knee while the hip is stretched and derotated. And let me tell you it works and it lasts. ‫בס"ד‬

Greetings from the Land of Israel! Subject:

With HaShem’s help, we s tand upon the threshold of the printing of

“Responsa of the Medrash”

a new sefer containing 1,985 ques tions and answers culled from all of Medrash Rabbah, and thus spanning the entire Chumash! To date, the sefer’s author has printed four seforim, several editions of each one. All four have been warmly accepted in the world of the yeshivot and by all s treams of Torahfaithful Jewry. In addition, talmudei Torah continue to purchase many copies, in order to award them as prizes to s tudents. The names of these seforim: 1. Ahavas Torah (Love of the Torah) 2. Anava V’Shalom (Humility & Peace) 3. Shinun HaParashah (Review of the Weekly Torah Portion) 4. Va’Yipallel Pinchas (And Pinchas Prayed) 5. Michalkail Chaim (He Sustains Life). Thousands learn these seforim and are greatly propelled forward in Torah, fear of Heaven, and refinement of character. As a result of the new sefer, too, in which, in exchange for donations of one thousand shekels, donors will see printed in the sefer a dedication to one of their friends or loved ones, readers will surely be drawn upwards in wisdom and kedusha. All who would like to join this project and be a partner in the extremely important mitzvah that is entailed in it (See the sefer, “Pela Yo-aitz” – the Subject of “Dfus” i.e. “Printing” – and so, too, Part Two of the sefer, “Shmiras HaLashon,” about how marvelous is the mitzvah of helping to print sifrei kodesh) are asked to provide the needed information (name, date of death, if relevant) as soon as possible, so we can print the dedication and memorialize the departed friend, spouse or relative. So, too, dedications can be for the sake of someone who has not yet found his shidduch, or, for example, for the sake of gaining a good livelihood, or for the cure and recovery of someone who is ill.

As noted, the cos t of one dedication is

you can also contribute to spreading the famous sefer "ahavas torah" (love of the torah) With thanks, and with the blessings of the Torah,
