Fostering 187 Children by Adina Hershberg
Shmuel and Yaffa Shecter, Holocaust survivors who moved to Israel, opened their home to anyone in need.
O
ri Shecter, the youngest of 10 children, never knew who he’d find sleeping in his bed when he returned home. It could be a lone soldier, a child who came from an abusive home, a child whose widowed mother was not coping or any of the myriad children that needed a safe haven. His late parents, Shmuel and Yaffa, sheltered and cared for 187 such children in their modest home in Kiryat Shmuel near Haifa. The Shecters never planned on fostering children; they certainly had their hands full in raising their ten biological
10
children. One day they were approached by a young Ethiopian Jewish man who told them that his wife had fallen into depression following the birth of their third child. She wasn’t functioning well and the children were being neglected. Her husband felt at a total loss of what to do. “My parents, without hesitation, took the children and infant into their home,” Ori says. “They lovingly cared for them for a long time, until their mother had recovered and began functioning.” The Haifa Municipality’s Social Welfare Department understood that Shmuel and Yaffa were the preferred
address for children in need who required an immediate safe haven. Over the years, their home, which was originally 60 square meters (646 square feet), tripled in size in order to accommodate their expanding “family”. The Shecters didn’t have the necessary legal papers to build, but the municipality looked the other way. One of their “children” was Avi Galinsky, who had been in their home from the age of 13. The court had instructed that Avi be immediately put into a foster home until a permanent arrangement could be made. Due to the urgency of the case, Avi

My parents, without hesitation, took the children and infant into their home,” Ori says. “They lovingly cared for them for a long time, until their mother had recovered and began functioning.”
was hastily brought to the Shecter home. Unlike other foster families, children could be brought to their home without prior warning and at any of the hour of the day and night. “My parents were always ready to take in babies, children and teens that needed a safe and loving place,” explains Ori. Avi related, “My father died and my mother could not function at all in the house. I was told that I would be going to live in the home of the Shecter Family until a permanent place could be found. I came to their home filled with fears, but they immediately made me feel wanted and loved. Exactly that week their home was undergoing renovations and so the parents gave me their bedroom and moved their beds to the storeroom. I didn’t want them to do that, but they insisted. I ended up staying in their home for many years. They treated me like part of their family.” “My parents were simple people, but their simplicity was filled with loving-kindness,” Ori recounts. “They saw everyone on an equal level – it didn’t matter who was in front of them. It could be an infant, a young child, a poor man, teenager, or elderly person – they were sensitive, empathic and worried about each one of them. “My parents underwent harsh suffering – they were Holocaust survivors – and then when they finally came on Aliya to Palestine they were banished to a refugee camp in Cyprus. Immediately after they returned to Palestine my father went to fight in the War for Independence. Despite all of this, they were happy and optimistic people. Their nature was to be full of faith and happiness.” The Shecters and their 10 children Ori tells the story of how his

father worked in a company that made floor tiles. The management gave his father a list of workers who he needed to fire. Shmuel Shecter looked at the list and was shocked to see that the list contained the name of a childless Holocaust survivor. Without hesitation, Shmuel erased the name of this worker and wrote his own name on the list, even though he had young children and a wife to support. He told his wife not to worry; he believed with a full faith that God would provide them with sustenance. Three months later he received a job at the Ata Textile Factory with even better conditions than the previous job. When Ori was a young child he didn’t understand why his parents were so busy with other people’s children. There was a time, when in addition to his siblings, there were eight foster children in the Shecter household. As he matured, Ori understood what an important mitzvah his parents were doing. Shmuel and Yaffa had met in Romania. They were married in Cyprus, following their nonsuccessful attempt to come by ship to Palestine. She was 15 and he was 18. They began fostering children when they were in their 50s. They continued fostering children in their late 70s until health issues prevented them. Shmuel passed away from cancer at the age of 83, and Yaffa passed away from cancer two years later. The ripple effects of lovingkindness which Yaffa and Shmuel Shecter showered upon all of their “children” continue to impact many in positive ways. Ori and his wife Kana continue the family tradition of helping people through a wide range of fundraising activities for people in need and helping lone soldiers and hospital patients. The Race to Catch My Flight by Slovie Jungreis-Wolff
Running as fast as I could as the final call blared, I realized I had lost my handbag.
N
othing prepared me for the security line that greeted me at the airport after a recent lecture that I gave. I knew that I was in one of America’s busiest airports trying to return to New York, but I didn’t know that this was ‘cheerleader’s competition week’. Thousands of excited preteens and teens were also trying to get back home along with their parents and coaches. There was no room to move. My flight was looming and the line was at a standstill. Nerves were at edge. Some began to push. Others to voice their frustration loudly. Tension filled the air. The situation began to get out of control. A group decided to surge and create their own line. There was lots of jostling and pushing. Those whose flights were within the hour were called to join. That was me. I followed the crowd. There was no way I could miss this flight. I had family waiting and classes to teach. My eye was anxiously on the clock. It seemed as if everyone had excess baggage and the trays were spilling over with stuff. My heart was beating. Come on, come on, I thought. I wish the line would just move. Finally it was my turn. Throwing my
20
things into the tray, I quickly removed my shoes and raised my hands inside the security machine. My flight was being called. After being checked manually, I ran. Where do I go? Which direction? It all seemed so confusing. The overhead screens were a jumble of numbers. I called out to an officer next to me. “You need to get on the train to get to your gate. You need to go downstairs to the station first!” I could not believe it. How will I ever make this flight? My heart began to race. I ran down the stairs. The doors of the train were open. I jumped in. I didn’t even know if this was the right train. I searched the signs above. I turned to the person next to me. As I looked at her I gasped. She was holding her hand luggage and I was not! Oh no! I realized with a sinking feeling that I left my hand luggage upstairs at security. What was I thinking? I wasn’t. I jumped out of the train as the doors were about to close. Up the down staircase, flying up the steps. What is my bag?? Is it even still there? Did they cart it away as suspicious? Retracing my steps, I spotted my bag in the distance. A sigh of relief as I grabbed
it off the table. My flight was being called again. Final call. I couldn’t breathe. I never ran so fast in my life. Back down the stairs, waiting for the train to take me to the area that leads to the gate I gave myself a talking to. How could you do this? What were you thinking? How could you be so careless? I had no one to blame but myself. A most lonely place to be. The doors opened and once again I jumped into the train. My inner voice began to nudge me further. There is no way you are going to make this flight! And why do you do this traveling to speak anyway? It’s too much pressure! The train jolted to a stop. I dashed out. My gate loomed up ahead. There were two people left to board. And me. I made my way through the plane. With sweat pouring and in dire need of a cold cup of water, I found my seat. As I made calmed down and took a few moments to collect my thoughts, I realized two things.

First, my inner voice was way too negative today. This is the powerful voice that becomes the reality we create. This is the voice that stops us in our tracks and does not allow us to believe in ourselves. We berate, we surrender, and we choose to limit ourselves. Instead of ‘yes’ we hear ‘no’. We replace ‘possible’ with ‘impossible’. Why not replace that voice with positive language? Why not create a positive reality in our mind? Yes, it is tight, but if you try you will make it. It’s okay to misplace a bag. It’s not the end of the world and it doesn’t mean you are a loser. Second, why do I choose to speak in different communities, sometimes getting up at the crack of dawn and returning the next morning as I watch the sun rise? Why do I feel the need to reach out to Jews all over the world despite the pressure that my schedule sometimes brings? At that moment the image of my Zaydah, my grandfather, appeared in my mind. When I was a little girl, my Zaydah would offer a few words of Torah’s wisdom before my mother
I could not believe it. How will I ever make this flight? My heart began to race. I ran down the stairs. would speak. Though Zaydah’s English was broken, his was the language of the heart. Everyone understood his message. I recalled how once Zaydah described Joseph wandering in the field. A man who was really an angel asked “What are you looking for?” Joseph replied “I am looking for my brothers.” My Zaydah cried as he spoke. “This must be your mission. The mission of every Jew. Look for your brothers and sisters. And do not rest until you find them.” I grew up knowing that this was my family’s mission in this world. This was our reality. After surviving a physical holocaust, my parents and grandparents encountered a spiritual holocaust. Through love of every Jew, they discovered the key to our survival and passed this legacy on to us. What an awesome reality we can create. Think positive. Reach out to your brethren with love. Change the world.

The Running Rabbi by Rabbi Eli Glaser
How I went from running to the smorgasbord to running a marathon.
F
or years I ran – to the smorgasbord, to the all-you-caneat buffet, to the front of the line at the deli counter, chasing the tastiest recipe or the biggest meal. And what did all that “exercise” get me? A morbidly obese, 300-pound body. I was running to eat, practically sprinting into a six-foot hole in the ground, dug by my own fork, knife and greasy spoon. A marathon of misery made up of morsels of passing palatable pleasures, repeatedly reinforced by portions of regret and remorse. Now, I’m running to live; not just for myself, but for all the people who are still stuck in my old workout routine. Eleven years ago, I changed my life, gained a lot of clarity, honesty and conviction – and lost 120 pounds. A few days from now, along with 30,000 of my closest friends, I’ll be running in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. I’m not doing this to try and show off my new-found speed and world-class endurance. I’ll be happy to finish the 26.2-mile course in fewer than 5 ½ hours, which would put me in about 18,905 place (give or take a few hundred). Basketball and Ultimate Frisbee are my sports of choice. I love the skills and teamwork – not to mention building up a good sweat. But running just for the sake of running was never in my game plan. Until our 15-year old son, Yossi, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in March, 2011. Talk about having your world thrown upside down. Just a few hours before Shabbat, my wife and son were flown on a medevac helicopter from Baltimore to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for emergency treatment that included brain surgery and five days in the ICU.

After three cycles of chemotherapy in Baltimore and more than 20 rounds of proton-beam radiation treatments in Philadelphia – supplemented by an ongoing anti-cancer nutrition regiment, thank God Yossi’s scans are completely clean, as is his bill of health for the future (God willing). We are extremely grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support and prayers we received from around the world, as well as in our incredible community of Baltimore. One local organization in particular, The Jewish Caring Network, literally held our hand, propped up our feet and physically and emotionally guided us through this ordeal. So two years ago, when I was asked to take part in their annual 5K fundraiser to help support their cause, I felt honored and privileged to participate. There was only one problem; I had never run even one mile before, let alone 3.1 miles – which is the length of a 5K course. But how could I say no? So I asked a dear friend, Bruce Luchansky, to help “train” me. I had two goals: not to embarrass myself by slowing him down too much, and trying to run three miles without stopping – no matter how long it took. Remarkably, during our first morning run I accomplished the latter goal, if not the former, but my legs felt like rubber the entire rest of the day. After giving myself enough time to recover, I trained a few more times and actually earned a medal by placing in the top 10 of my age group at the race. Don’t get too excited, though, I think there were only 15 of us total. Notice the race number I “randomly” received.Notice the race number I “randomly” received. But I got the running bug. I started to like running just for the sake of running. It wasn’t as immediately stimulating as

After three cycles of chemotherapy in Baltimore and more than 20 rounds of proton-beam radiation treatments thank God Yossi’s scans are completely clean hustling down court on a fast break or chasing down a disc in a competitive game of Ultimate Frisbee, but after each run I felt really good. The endorphins were kicking in. I was experiencing the “runner’s high” and building my endurance. Five kilometers turned into 10, and six-mile runs extended to 12. The first time I ran 13 miles – the length of a half marathon - I was amazed I could cover that distance without stopping. I started to enter races – not with the vision of winning, but to help push myself by competing against others. So far I have met my goals – which are to complete each race and not to finish last. My main objective in running the marathon is to raise awareness to help reverse the obesity epidemic and to educate our community about proper nutrition, emphasizing the point that anyone can change their life and develop a healthy relationship with food. This is the time of the Jewish year to put plans into action. We

spent hours pr ay i n g and reflecting during the High Holy Days and perhaps we pledged to “once and for all change our diet and/or start exercising more.” The days and weeks following the holidays are the true testing ground of those commitments. Are they going to be empty words or not? Proper diet and appropriate exercise are fundamental Jewish tenets. We have a responsibility to care for the precious body God gave us. This is a lesson I learned the hard way and now I’m trying to make it easier for others to learn it as well. I hope that my story can help motivate you to take that first, critical step. Nothing is stopping you - and nothing tastes as good as feeling good feels.

Why We Are So Resistant to the Word “Organic”
When it comes to health, as a community, we take it seriously. We go for check-ups, we meticulously follow doctor’s orders, we do our own research. We care - for good reason - about keeping our bodies healthy. And we care about our families’ health more than anything, perhaps. We’re skeptical, at this point, about diet fads and new perspectives. Rightfully so. We question. We don’t accept everything we’re ‘fed’. I’d like to express how dangerous, however, this approach
28
can be. Ultimately, we need to stay educated and in the loop. I’m not here to preach any diet. But I’d like to talk about the Organic Revolution and why it is so important to understand what it is about. Behind the Organic Revolution lurks the thing it sprang out from: Genetic Modification of our food. In the Torah, we are forbidden outright from “Kilayim”. We are forbidden to crossbreed seeds or animals. As our tradition is, each topic such as this has loads of literature surrounding it.

MAGAZINE
Once upon a time, family gardens were as common as family kitchens.
I’m only reminding us that we were forewarned in our ingenious Torah. Once upon a time, not too long ago, a company called Monsanto began to modify foods to grow faster, bigger, sweeter. They did this by forcing genes from species such as bacteria and viruses into seeds. These are known as “GMO”, for Genetically Modified Organisms, or as MAGAZINE
“GE” for Genetically Engineered. Monsanto also developed Pesticides and Herbicides to kill bugs and weeds in the gardens, and their GMO seeds were designed to be able to survive those chemicals. Now, a chemical which kills bugs and weeds is not something you necessarily want to be eating. There are many issues with Pesticides & Herbicides as well as with GMOs, which I’ll just briefly introduce. Plants and Insects are more ancient and structurally sound than chemicals. Therefore, over time the bugs and weeds became resistant to the pesticides and herbicides, and became even stronger. Monsanto then created stronger poisons. So our food then became more pumped with anti-superbug & anti-superweed properties. Today, studies have shown the grave effects of GMOs on animals to be: organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging and infertility. I’ll pause to present a list of GMO crops: Corn, Soy, Cotton (for oil), Canola, Potatoes, Alfalfa, Squash, Sugar (from Sugar Beets) & Papaya. So what does this have to do with “Organic”? We’ve been sold mass-produced food that is either GMO or sprayed with these Herbicides & Pesticides for a long time. It was commonplace. As natural as anything else to us. But today there is a lot of information out. Awareness is rising. We are realizing: “We’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.” Once upon a time, family gardens were as common as family kitchens. Growing vegetables and herbs is actually simpler than we may think, most of the time. All the washing and scrubbing will not remove pesticides or herbicides from food. It was sprayed on throughout the growing process and was absorbed into the food just like the rain and the sunlight. It is an
inherent part of non-Organic foods. Organic implies that a plant is both from non-GMO seed and that it was not sprayed with herbicides or pesticides. For dairy and meats it means there were no hormones or antibiotics given to the animals and that they were fed an organic diet. And since they are not sprayed with harmful chemicals, organic food contains higher supplies of vitamins and minerals without any of the toxins that conventional produce comes with. This is very big news. This is very important news. We need to accept the Organic Revolution as redemptionary for our community. The potential for healing and growth through organic food is incredible. It is much better, as we well know, to eat a less of something healthy than to eat a lot of something unhealthy. Better to eat clean, nutritious food than larger amounts of conventional. It is so difficult to accept this information. We have become resistant to this information. We have gotten used to the abundance and accessibility of conventional produce. But we, as a nation, have also become less healthy. And we need to see that, too. So let’s support each other in making the switch to amazing, healthy food. Healthy food must be organic. We can make the switch. It is not impossible. It is right under our noses. We only need to embrace it ! Wishing us all vibrant health & happiness. Shabbat Shalom!

From Baptist Minister to Orthodox Jew by Ronda Robinson
Moshe Boldor’s harrowing odyssey from hunted renegade in Communist Romania to freedom in the U.S. as an observant Jew.
J
ean Boldor was an auto mechanic and driver for the Director of Mines in Romania, in 1983. He wanted to escape the Communist country where he was born and freely study the Bible. “In a Communist country, you cannot do anything you want,” he says. The Romanian government forced citizens to celebrate Communist holidays. Boldor thirsted for more. “For whatever reason I was attached to the Old Testament,” he recalls, “and read about the people of Israel and the prophets. It fascinated me how God took the people of Israel from the land of Egypt.” Always drawn to Biblical learning, Boldor didn’t know until much later that he had Jewish roots. His great-great-greatgrandmother was Jewish. From there, the trail grows cold. The Jewish community in his native Lupeni was decimated during World War II, when Romania became a satellite of Nazi Germany and Jews lost their shops and citizenship. At the end of the war thousands of Jews fled Romania.
36
It is estimated that by the end of the 1960s, the Romanian Jewish community numbered no more than 100,000. Wanting to share the joy he found, Boldor began to teach the Bible to young people. “The Communists did not look kindly upon my involvement, so I was taken to the police station many times to be interrogated, handcuffed and beaten – and given time to reflect on my activity.” Lay people like Boldor were arrested for asserting their religious beliefs; they weren’t allowed to have Bibles. At age 20, he applied to emigrate to the United States where he could pursue Bible studies. “From that moment on, I was followed everywhere because I was considered a threat to Communism,” he remembers. “When you applied to leave, they thought you were a danger.” For five years Boldor lingered in Romania with no end in sight. Life was growing more difficult, so he decided to run away but was caught on a train headed toward the Yugoslavian border. Military police put him under 24-hour
arrest in a room full of screaming people with broken arms and broken feet who received no medical attention. They told him of being beaten with AK-47 assault rifles. After paying a monetary penalty, he was freed and went home. Then in August 1988, Boldor and a friend, Ion, tried to flee again, going by train and on foot to the border. “I prayed to God to save me. I read Psalms when I had a few minutes. We went three days without drinking any water,” he says. Villagers saw the two men and alerted the military who surrounded them. The soldiers began to beat them. “Usually beatings were so bad that very few survived the next week,” Boldor says, “But one sergeant saw that I had a book of Psalms and ordered the soldiers not to touch me. Once again I saw the Hand of God and I thanked Him.” He was put in military prison for two weeks. Then a friend in Austria sent Boldor $100 through his bank, which was used to bribe an Army captain to let Boldor and Ion go free.

They began plotting their third escape. “I read in the Book of Esther that Mordechai and Esther fasted three days
to avoid detection by the police. From Ljubljana they hopped a train to Germany and Austria and at last arrived at a refugee camp near Vienna, their clothes full of dust and oil. Their treacherous two-

and three nights to save the Jewish nation from Haman, so I did the same. I fasted three days and nights and cried to God to help us this time succeed.” Boldor’s prayers were answered. In September 1988 he and Ion took a train to the Yugoslavian border. They jumped out at a station close to the border and hid in a stand of hay. They slept by day and walked or crawled by night. When they reached Yugoslavia they walked to Belgrade, about 500 km, 310 miles. In Belgrade they climbed atop a train to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, MAGAZINE
week journey was over. “It’s hard to describe what it means to be free and alive after such a long and dangerous trip. When we got there we found out that 180 people had been killed by the Romanian border. So God once again saved my life,” says Boldor. He kept a promise to God to study the Bible if he survived. As a refugee from a Communist country, he obtained a visa from Canada, where he learned Biblical Hebrew and earned a bachelor’s degree in religious education at a Christian college. He also became an ordained Baptist
minister. Eventually Boldor married, had four children and moved to Seattle, Washington, where he started a small business taking care of seniors. It was during his first trip to Israel in 2004 and visiting the Cave of Machpelach in Hevron where the patriarchs and matriarchs are buried that the Baptist minister had a spiritual crisis. He had always believed Abraham was buried in Shechem, as the Christian Bible stated. Now he found otherwise. He started to compare the Hebrew and Christian Bibles and saw other discrepancies. Torah won him over. “When I went to Israel I saw the beauty of Judaism and Shabbat. It was life-changing for me. The Torah passages came alive,” he says. He followed the murmurings of his heart as a child and decided to convert to Judaism. Back home in Seattle he resigned his pulpit, began going to synagogue and learn Torah intensely, and started keeping the laws of Torah. The conversion process took 10 years. The former Baptist minister, who changed his name to Moshe, now keeps a kosher home and prays with a minyan three times a day. His marriage didn’t withstand the changes. His wife didn’t want to convert to Judaism and the couple divorced. Two of their children converted and became religious, with one of the daughters making aliyah. Boldor, 56, studies through an online yeshiva and makes Torah the center of his life. “It is really great to be part of the Jewish nation and follow in Avraham’s footsteps.” Today he owns and manages a nursing home in Seattle. He transforms the hardships he endured to help others. “I am thankful to God because I was able to come home to Torah and Israel and I am trying to help other Jews. The time is not too late to come home and join the Jewish nation of Israel through following the Torah. “Sometimes I cry living here in America. In Romania they handcuffed me, tortured me, put me in prison for reading and learning the Torah. Here we have freedom but sometimes it is wasted. My prayer is for God to use me to help other Jews appreciate the beauty of Torah.”
