Biblical Hebrew A Story of Survival by Rabbi Doniel Baron

E

ven a superficial inquiry into the development of languages throughout the ages reveals one of the greatest marvels of history: the incredible survival of Lashon Hakodesh, literally the Holy Language, a reference to biblical Hebrew. For most of Jewish history, the Jewish people lived in a vast diaspora scattered throughout the world. By historical standards, Lashon Hakodesh should have suffered the same fate as Latin, Old French, and so many other languages destined to gather dust in the basements of ivy covered libraries. But it survived. As a community, the Jewish people typically used at least two languages. The first was always Lashon Hakodesh. The Book of Esther mentions the dispatch of a royal decree to the Jewish people “in their language and script.”1 Even though it says that the Jewish people lived in many countries that spoke other languages, the Medrash2 comments that “their language” is Lashon Hakodesh. Although it was rarely spoken in daily life, it remained the language of prayer and for most rabbinical literature. Even the Rambam’s works penned in Arabic were translated into Hebrew in his lifetime, and the Rambam’s magnum opus on Jewish law was originally written in Hebrew.

The second language was generally a Jewish vernacular and it varied according to time and culture. Throughout much of early history, perhaps as early Abraham himself, the Jewish people and its forefathers spoke Aramaic. Some 2,000 years ago, Jews living in Hellenist lands developed a Judeo-Greek language with Greek characters called Yevanit, and the language was widely spoken for centuries. Jews from Spanish lands spoke a Judeo Spanish Ladino which varied in dialect across the Iberian peninsula and it is still spoken today. Jews from the Caucuses spoke a Jewish Bucharian dialect. Yiddish developed in German lands and is still spoken across the globe by tens of thousands today. Despite persecution, expulsion, and exile, Lashon Hakodesh somehow survived just as the Jewish people survived. Moreover, it remarkably prevailed even though in almost every instance throughout history it competed with another language which was the vernacular.

Its Unique Nature The origin of language is one of the greatest mysteries of human existence

and it has baffled scholars for centuries. We can explain words in many language through tools such as onomatopoeia, but an essential question always remains: one needs an existing form of communication, a language, in order to create any language. While numerous theories exist, there is no academic agreement as to its origin. In fact, in 1866, the Linguistic Society of Paris found the question so futile that it banned future debate and discussion of the topic.3 One thing, however, is clear. Regardless of what one concludes about the source of language, there is formidable support for the proposition that many of the words we use today are the products of consensus. There are many examples of this in English. Some are patently obvious such as the words internet, telephone, and television – all devised to use existing words to describe new inventions. Others require some background information. Sir Thomas Brown, a prominent 18th century scientist, coined the word electricity because he observed the phenomenon through static electricity produced by placing object in contact with amber. The word for amber in Greek is electra. What does that essentially have to do with electricity? Close to nothing. The word vaccine stems from the Latin word vacca, meaning cow, due to the

nature of the discovery that gave rise to the basis for creating vaccines. Edward Jenner, another 18th century scholar, observed that milkmaids largely escaped smallpox epidemics but they did occasionally contract a mild disorder called cowpox. Jenner discovered that injecting fluid from cowpox blisters into healthy people prevented them from succumbing to smallpox. Since the discovery (sort of) happened through cows, the word vaccine was coined to describe the solution. Does the word vaccine describe the concept of immunity through introducing a pathogen? Hardly. These and many other words are the products of consensus. While they may have some logic, they are essentially arbitrary and don’t truly describe the thing they represent. According to traditional Jewish sources, Lashon Hakodesh is complete different. The letters and words of Lashon Hakodesh are essential, not arbitrary. To the extent that it is possible, its words describe and express the physical thing or concept. Just as the elements on the periodic table each have unique properties and their various combinations create many types of molecules, according to Jewish tradition, each Hebrew letter has a particular implication, and different letter combinations are compounds comprised of those elements. For example, the word for ear is ozen. In the 18th century, scientists discovered that in addition to enable us to hear, the ear also controls our balance. The word in Lashon Hakodesh for balance is and for thousands of years has been, izun which stems from the same root as ozen, alluding to a connection between the two. Contemplation of common words such as Adam meaning man, Ivrit meaning Hebrew and Yehudi, meaning Jew, reveals worlds of meaning . Biblical Hebrew is a language of mahut, essence.

Lashon Hakodesh: History, Holiness and Hebrew Considering the miraculous survival and unprecedented (and controversial) revival of the language, Lashon Hakodesh and its derivatives such as modern Hebrew are worthy of study from a Torah perspective. In his recent book “ Lashon Hakodesh MAGAZINE

A new book explores the unique nature and incredible survival of the world’s holiest language. : History, Holiness and Hebrew” (Mosaica Press 2014) Rabbi Reuven Chaim Klein affords Lashon Hakodesh the attention it deserves. Of particular importance is Rabbi Klein’s use of the academic method to provide an impressive survey of rabbinical commentary throughout the ages. The book addresses some basic and important questions concerning the language. Did Adam speak Lashon Hakodesh? What about our forefather Abraham? Did the letters of Lashon Hakodesh appear the same way throughout the centuries? The book also addresses the question of what distinguishes Lashon Hakodesh from other languages. Rabbi Klein cites prominent sources concerning the essential rather than arbitrary nature of the language as discussed above. He similarly provides a synopsis of the main interpretations as to why the language is called “holy.”

One of the book’s most impressive contributions to the literature on Lashon Hakodesh is its depiction of the rabbinic reaction to secular attempts to establish modern Hebrew as a spoken language. Linguistically, modern Hebrew is far closer to biblical Hebrew than other languages which derive from an older source. “HWÆT, WE GAR-DEna in geardagum, þeodcyninga þrym gefrunon, hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon!”4 Not only is that eighth century English sentence indecipherable to us, a modern English speaker would have difficult recognizing it as a form of English. In contrast, were the prophet Isaiah to land at Ben Gurion airport and ask in Biblical Hebrew for directions to Jerusalem, he would be understood and speakers of modern Hebrew would be able to communicate an answer. Among other things, it was that apparent similarity gave rise to some of the rabbinic concern in adopting modern Hebrew as an everyday language. They were suspicious or critical of some of the suggested modern innovations and some with uncomfortable with the use of a holy language for mundane matters. For example, the Hebrew term chashmal which, according to rabbinic interpretation is replete with kabbalistic meaning, was adopted as the modern Hebrew word for electricity. The symbolism in the word luach biblically used to describe a tablet or medium into which something is indelibly carved (as in the Ten Commandments which were carved into luchot) as the modern word for a blackboard which can be erased is a curious and suspicious secular adaptation of the original meaning. Rabbi Klein’s summary of efforts for and against the use of modern Hebrew tracks the various opinions in a clear and balanced manner which adds a significant facet to an understanding of Lashon Hakodesh throughout Jewish history. The history of Lashon Hakodesh is an intrinsic part of Jewish history, and “ Lashon Hakodesh : History, Holiness and Hebrew” provides us with an insightful overview of our historic and continuing connection to an eternal language. 1. What Husbands Need to Know by Anonymous

How I stopped being cruel to my wife and saved my marriage. In ten years of marriage, my wife and I were blessed with four beautiful children. But the marriage itself was often difficult and painful. We were divorced for two and a half years. Then we remarried. This is not a recommended course of events, but Divine Providence took me on this unusual path. Fortunately, my wife and I usually got along pretty well during the time we were divorced and I saw my kids nearly every day. But being divorced was definitely not ideal. There were times that the hate I had for my wife was so intense that I could never repeat those awful thoughts out loud. I now realize that my marriage was lacking true harmony from the very

beginning. At the time of the divorce, I did not know about the concept of Shalom Bayit, the uniquely Jewish approach to peace in the home. I never had a real understanding of how precious the marital relationship is. Our first marriage was filled with periods of calm and periods of tension and discord. I always felt there was something missing. I never had the inner peace that the calm would last. There was always a storm brewing around the corner. We could go a couple weeks or maybe a month or two when things were relatively smooth, but I always knew it wouldn’t last. And inevitably, I would blame the ups and downs on my wife. Our troubles weren’t dramatic. It was

simply the day to day negativity that ate up the marriage. My wife would make a critical comment about my family. I would immediately take the insult to heart and attack her right back for the direct affront to the people who meant the most to me. After all, she knew how deeply I loved my parents and how any attack on them hit me at my weakest spot. How dare she hurt me in that way? Another tender area was the children. She often voiced her displeasure at the way I parented. She would often undermine me and refuse to back me up when I made a decision. I couldn’t understand her passive aggressive behavior, especially when it came to matters dealing with the kids. MAGAZINE


Regardless of the trigger I would get extremely defensive and tumble reactively into “win mode,” feeling I simply had to win the argument. That dynamic would spark a cold war of sorts, where we wouldn’t speak for days or even weeks. I found it easier to shut down and just not have anything to do with her when I sensed she was upset with me. I would just escape into endless hours of mind-numbing television and internet surfing. After a while I was usually able to get us back on track with humor, but even my humor eventually stopped working and reconciliation became almost impossible. Before long another silly incident, insult, or miscommunication would present itself to allow us to further tear down our marriage. My only conclusion was that my wife was an unhappy and unreasonable woman, who couldn’t deal with the fact I was basically a good (albeit imperfect) husband and father. It was almost as if her personality just couldn’t be content if things were too calm for too long. After years of the marriage slowly wearing away, we made the mutual decision to divorce. But a person takes themselves with them wherever they go, and divorced life didn’t provide the relief I was hoping for. My wife felt the pain and vulnerability too. After twoand-a half years, we made the radical decision to give the marriage another shot.

She was always overreacting, claiming I just didn’t “get her.” It frustrated me to no end when I heard the words; “You just don’t get me.” Until recently I didn’t know what this meant or how to react when accused of this. My

I had no problem sharing these things with my father or a closer friend, but for some reason I found my wife to be as annoying as nails to a chalkboard. More recently our differences in how we felt about and observed Judaism came into play. The more I learned and I observed, the more I became critical of my wife and all the things she wasn’t doing or was doing “wrong.” I was disappointed that she didn’t want to improve and grow and was concerned we were harming our children by not teaching them properly. I often thought I would be much better off if I met an observant woman who would help my spiritual ascent rather than hold me back and keep me in such a distressed place. I think we both felt deep down that we got back together for financial considerations as well as for the sake of the kids. I was kicking myself for getting back together because no matter what I did or how good a husband I would try to be, I was never going to satisfy her. She just wasn’t capable of being satisfied! I felt so foolish. It got to the point where we were both ready to walk away and admit with much embarrassment that we made a terrible mistake twice! Our second marriage would not even make it to the first anniversary.

A Second Chance It was a great feeling to get the second chance to be a husband and full-time father. How many divorced people get the opportunity to be together as a family again? Things were very good and we were very considerate of each other. It seemed we both grew and learned a lot about ourselves during the time we were divorced. Unfortunately, after several months we fell back into the same old negative patterns and pitfalls after the “honeymoon” period was over. We had been in counseling but it MAGAZINE

wife could never understand why I didn’t need the same level of attention that she did. If anything she didn’t “get” me! If, for example, I broke something or cut my finger it would anger me when she asked if I was okay. I would instinctively snap back at her with a sarcastic comment. She didn’t understand that all she had to do was leave me alone and I’d be fine. I simply did not have a need for her getting involved. When she would ask me how my day was I often had zero interest in sharing because there was usually little to say and it was downright unpleasant to have to talk about it. On rare occasions I did decide to share “just the facts,” but when her annoying, multiple follow up questions would inevitably start, I would

I was in one of the deepest ruts in my life, at which point something happened that changed my inner world and the whole course of my marriage. One reading of the book and I felt the rug had been pulled out from under me. Suddenly I was able to see my situation

in an entirely different light. All the confusion I was experiencing about my marriage became crystal clear. I realized that underneath all of my blaming, criticizing and finger pointing, there lay a fundamental truth. The true reason for all my marital strife was me. How could it be all my fault? There must have been things my wife did to contribute to the breakdown of our marriage! What about all of her miserable behavior? The Kesubah, the Jewish marriage contract, clearly states that the husband is ultimately responsible for his wife’s happiness and hence the husband is primarily responsible for Shalom Bayis. This was a complete paradigm shift for me. It may not be politically correct, but I believe it is the truth. It is the men that need to initiate the giving, especially when it comes to giving honor. As the Talmud says, “There is no blessing in one’s home without the wife’s honor.” All the blessings a husband receives are in the merit of his wife. When a husband honors and loves his wife, she feels invigorated and will respond in kind. The complaints and nagging are now almost nonexistent, and the frustration and tension with matters related to intimacy are dissolving. We have never felt this close and secure in our marriage, and just about all of it has to do with my wife seeing and feeling consistent, deep rooted changes in me. Shalom Bayit is one of the most important mitzvahs of our lives; the worth of a man is largely dependent on how he treats his wife; not just in public but also behind closed doors. Perhaps an analogy would be to view the husband as the sun, and the woman to a flower. If the flower isn’t blooming (the woman is acting negatively, withdrawing, complaining, nagging, or being passive aggressive), the first place to examine is to see if it’s getting the proper amount of nourishing sunlight. I realize this is antithetical to much of today’s pop psychology on marriage. I know many will raise eyebrows at the

teaching that marital harmony is primarily a male responsibility. I also had my doubts not too long ago. But then I saw how everything fell into place once I started to treat my wife properly. I never cursed or physically abused my wife, but I now see that I was in fact a cruel husband. Every time I was stingy and tight with money, criticizing every penny

marriage (sometimes even from strangers) while simultaneously ignoring my wife’s needs is indeed cruelty. In several months I have gone through a remarkable transformation (just ask my wife!). I will never doubt the ability of people to change, no matter how low they have fallen. I truly regret that I caused my wife so much pain. I cringe when I think how I was ready to end my marriage, especially now that I understand the problems stemmed from my flawed thinking and ignorance. I am deeply grateful to the Almighty that I read Garden of Peace before it was too late. It was a tragedy to get divorced the first time, but to ruin a second chance would have been beyond any words. G-d gives us the challenges we need. I believe my wife and I were meant for each other. My wife sensed a change unlike any previous attempts I had made in the past. We are in tune with each other on a much deeper level and I am committed to giving her the loving nourishment she deserves on a daily basis. It seems to be working. We have gone a record amount of time without a calamity and our interactions on a daily basis have been warm and positive. Our marital and family dynamic has changed. On a couple of occasions when my wife has expressed hostility towards me I knew exactly where the message was coming from and what to do. It didn’t matter if I thought she was justified or not; I now know what the endgame is about. I don’t want to sugarcoat things and make this transformation sound too easy, but it wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I did put forth the personal and sincere effort to change, and once I did I felt G-d guiding me to be the best husband I can be. You don’t have to believe me. she spent, that was a form of cruelty. Every time I didn’t give her my full attention or was abrupt when she spoke to me or asked for my help, that was cruelty. Perhaps those actions seem like common flaws, yet once I stopped blaming my wife and started looking inwardly, I began to see how responsible I was for the deterioration of our marriage, and how so much of her “misbehavior” and “complaining” was simply a response to my complete misunderstanding of what my wife really wanted from me. Once I began to look within, I saw a man who was generous with his time, attention, and money with anyone who needed me – except for my wife! Seeking honor and recognition from outside my

C

an I tell you a story about your mother?” The young woman approached me after a recent lecture. I am always happy to hear another story about my beloved mother, Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis, obm. It’s as if I am receiving precious regards from Above. But this anecdote was different. It’s a message to all those who are dating or know someone contemplating marriage. The woman explained that she was ‘an older single.’ After running to too many single events, endless dating online, and meeting countless shadchanim/ matchmakers, she was ready to give up the search. What else was there left for her to do? A family member suggested that she attend a monthly lecture that my mother gave. Perhaps meeting in person would help bring about a successful connection. At the end of the class the woman worked through the crowd to speak to my mother. “Rebbetzin, can I talk to you for a few moments? I think someone called to tell you that I’d be here today.” “Yes, of course. Follow me. Let’s have a

conversation outside in quiet while I gather my things and get ready to go home.” They walked together until they reached a private spot. “I am dating for marriage but I feel as if I’m not getting anywhere. Here I am still single after all these years and still….. nothing.” Not a minute went by before my mother responded. “Sheyfelah (sweet dear), I am known to tell it like it is. If you need to improve your makeup I will tell you to go for a makeover. If there is a run in your stockings I will tell you to look yourself over and get a new pair. And if you have bad breath I will tell you to brush your teeth. So now I am going to tell you something. You need to change.” “Rebbetzin, I must tell you that I try so hard. I take really good care of myself to look good. I always keep an extra pair of stockings handy just in case. And my bag is filled with breath mints whenever I am on a date.” “That’s not what I mean. I mean your attitude needs changing.” “My attitude? Why do you say that? What needs to change?” “You do. You give off this really tough

attitude.” “Huh?” “The entire time I spoke you sat there with your arms folded. I know people and I am telling you that you need to soften up. There is a tough attitude you’re giving off and it’s not good for dating or marriage.” “But that’s how I sit.” “Sheyfelah, I’m telling you that I’ve been a Rebbetzin for many, many years. I see things. If you’re honest with yourself you will know what I’m talking about.” “I went home,” the woman told me, “closed my door and sat for a long time. I may have even cried a little because I realized that if I wanted to be totally truthful, your mother was right. I was tough. I had just been dating a sweet and wonderful guy. And you know what I told him? Just that week I had said, ‘Listen, this is not going to work. You’re great but you’re just too nice. I can’t relate to such a super nice guy.’ What was I thinking?” She paused for a moment and then gave the clincher. “That night I called him up and I told him that I’d like to try again. And here we are ten years later. We got married, have adorable kids and he is just the best MAGAZINE


husband a girl could ask for. I never would be having this conversation with you today if your mother didn’t wake me up that day. She gave me the best advice I ever got. I needed to seriously change my attitude. “ I told her how impressed I was that she took my mother’s advice to heart. “Well to tell you the truth, at first I felt that being single is hard enough and I didn’t need someone telling me what to do or how I need to change as if it is my fault. But then I took a quiet moment to think and realized that it’s not about blame or fault. It’s about being brave and strong enough to take on a new direction.” I asked her permission to share and she, herself, felt that it was crucial. Perhaps somebody else could transform their lives the way she did. There are times in every person’s life that one needs to take a good look in the emotional mirror and be truthful. Whether it is a tough attitude while dating, looking down on a spouse, being harsh with family members or condescending with people in our lives, it becomes easy to push people away. Without realizing it, we build walls and then wonder why we feel stuck. Change requires real courage. Not many have a person who will be the spiritual compass pointing to which direction is now needed to transform one’s life. And even if you are fortunate enough to have someone with that wisdom, you then need an open heart and mind to take the necessary steps to change. When Adam and Eve found themselves hiding among the trees in the Garden of Eden, God asked a question of just one word. “Ayekah – where are you?” More than a physical awareness, it was a spiritual perception that G-d was trying to relay. Where are you? How did you get into this situation? What happened to you? The Torah tells us that Adam was afraid. He felt ashamed. He hid. ‘Ayekah’ is the question we are obligated to ask ourselves when we feel as if we stand alone and nothing is going our way. But instead of falling into fear, shame or seeking a place to hide, we must seek the truth and recognize where we need to change to bring about hope and healing. We can challenge ourselves to climb higher and look for people who will bring goodness into our lives. Confronting ourselves is difficult. But once we make a decision to do better MAGAZINE

we can then live better. Take a moment, contemplate where you would like to change, chart your course, begin today. You can transform your life.

The Secret Jew & Incredible Survival of his Lost Manuscript by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller

The amazing story of Luis de Carvajal, a secret Jew who was murdered in the 1500s, and the unlikely survival of his handwritten memoirs.

N

early five hundred years ago, Luis de Rodriguez Carvajal, a secret Jew living in terror of the Spanish Inquisition, penned the following words at great risk to his life: “To practice Judaism is not heresy; it is the will of the Lord our G-d.” The Jewish book he secretly wrote has been found and is on display for the first time in decades. Luis de Rodriguez Carvajal and his family lived in the 1500s in Spain. Judaism had been banned in Spain in 1492 but many Jews, including the Rodriguez family, continued to secretly cling to Jewish faith and rituals, while living publicly as Catholics. The fearsome Spanish Inquisition ruthlessly hunted these secret Jews, torturing and executing anyone suspected of engaging in Jewish rituals. In in 1580s, Luis de Rodriguez, his mother, father and siblings were invited to settle in the Nuevo Leon, an area in today’s

Mexico governed by Luis’ uncle, Don Luis Carvajal. The family moved, and became close to Carvajal, changing their surname from Rodriguez and publicly embracing their powerful relative’s Catholic faith. In “New Spain”, Luis de Rodriguez, now de Carvajal “the Younger,” continued to keep his Jewish identity as best he could. On Fridays before Shabbat, Luis’ mother and sisters washed the bed linens and prepared festive food, including a chicken

dinner for Friday nights. The entire family wore their best clothes on Saturday, and the women of the household refrained from the sewing that customarily kept them busy (though they made sure to keep their sewing handy in case unexpected visitors dropped by). Before Passover, Luis and other secret Jews in their Mexican community would slaughter a lamb, roast it and eat it, trying to recreate, as Luis described, the first Passover feast: “On foot, like people about to set out on a journey, staves in hands and loins girded”. Their community also secretly celebrated the Jewish holidays Purim and Yom Kippur. In 1585, Luis and his father, Francisco Rodriguez, who worked as barterers and traders, travelled together to Mexico City for business. There, Francisco became gravely ill. Fearing he might never recover, he told his son Luis all he could about their secret Jewish faith. For a month,

he transmitted his knowledge to Luis, preparing him to be the leader of their circle of secret Jews. It was an intense time that profoundly changed the course of Luis’ life. When he returned home, Luis was more committed to his secret faith than ever. He circumcised himself and began to declare his Jewish beliefs publicly. He also encouraged other secret Jews to do the same. Sometime around 1590, Luis and his family were arrested for encouraging Judaism. His mother, Francisca Nunez de Carvajal, was tortured into near madness. The Inquisition authorities later said that under torture she’d implicated her husband and children as secret Jews. During this time, Luis began writing his memoirs, titled “Memorias”, in tiny script on miniature pages, about four by three inches. In this secret book, Luis seemed to give his imagination free reign, calling himself by a new name that might have had some secret meaning in his community, Joseph Lumbroso. The book begins: “Saved from terrible dangers by the Lord, I, Joseph Lumbroso of the Hebrew nation…” and goes on to address itself to all “who believe in the Holy of Holies and who hope for great mercies.” “Memorias” eventually grew to 180 tiny pages penned in an almost impossibly small script. As well as Luis’ memoirs, it included Jewish prayers, the Ten Commandments, and Maimonides’ Thirteen Principles for Faith. Luis painstakingly stitched the book together; its small size implies that it was hidden in a pocket and carried with him. Luis was briefly released from prison. Some modern scholars think this was so the Inquisition authorities could track his activities. Tragically, in 1596, he was arrested, along with his mother, four sisters, brother and a number of other Jews, and they were tortured. At one point, Luis was shown his manuscript and acknowledged that it was his. He was tortured so severely MAGAZINE

that he jumped out of a window to escape the agony. Somehow, he survived. Finally, after weeks of gruesome torture and imprisonment, nine of the Jews were put to death in a mass public burning for the “crime” of being Jewish. The victims included Luis’ mother, his sisters Isabel, Catalina and Leonor, and Luis himself. Luis was 30 years old. (Five years later, another sister, Mariana, was publicly burned at the stake.) Miraculously, Luis’ secret book

somehow survived. Tattered, well-worn, its pages apparently turned over and over by an unknown number of readers through the years, “Memorias” eventually was placed in Mexico’s National Archives, where it remained for hundreds of years, until vanishing in 1932. No one knows who took it but modern scholars have a theory. At the time, at least three academics were researching the de Carvajal family at the National Archives. One historian accused a rival, a Jewish academic from Northwestern University near Chicago, of stealing the book. The Jewish academic spent approximately three months in jail for the theft but no evidence implicated him in the crime. It’s thought that the academic who accused him was the true thief. For eight decades, “Memorias” remained lost. Then, in December 2015, it suddenly resurfaced in a London auction house. Bloomsbury Auctions didn’t recognize the book’s importance, blandly describing it in their auction listings as “small devotional manuscripts” and pricing it at $1,500, a small fraction of the

work’s actual value. In response to questioning about the document’s whereabouts, all the auctioneers would reveal is that it came “from the library of a Michigan family... in their possession for several decades.” Timothy Bolton, a specialist at the Bloomsbury Auctions, justified their decision to keep the previous owners’ identities private saying “one of the fundamental cornerstones of the auction world is our client’s privacy.” “Memorias” was bought in London, then promptly listed for sale in New York. There, Leonard Milberg, a prominent 85-year-old New York collector, saw it and recognized its importance. He consulted with experts who agreed that the tiny book was Luis de Carvajal’s, and also cautioned Mr. Milberg that it had been stolen. “It is the earliest surviving personal narrative by a New World Jew...and the earliest surviving worship manuscript and account of coming to the New World,” explains scholar David Szewczyk. Mr. Milberg got in touch with Diego Gomez Pickering, the Consul General of Mexico in New York, and arranged to repatriate the book, paying tens of thousands of dollars of his own money to acquire the book so that it could be returned to Mexico’s National Archives. He had only two requests. One was that before its repatriation in March, “Memorias” be on view in New York, where it’s currently on display at the New York Historical Society. Mr. Milberg also asked that digital copies of Luis de Carvajal’s book be made for Princeton University and for Manhattan’s Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue. This, Mr. Milberg explained, is a way of “getting back at anti-Semitism. I wanted to show that Jews were part of the fabric of life in the New World,” he explained. “This book was written before the Pilgrims arrived.”

Pranic Abundance Alyssa Elbogen

I

s it a fantasy to believe in a world of pure abundance? No. It’s what nature teaches us every day. Simply plant an herb, for example, and see how many seeds it gives- excited to reproduce and live out its fullest potential. Look at human beings reproducing and forming a stunning diversity. Abundance is natural. How much air surrounds us? Infinite air. How much space surrounds us? Infinite space. What is the destiny of the human race? What potential do we have? Infinite. How much energy exists in the universe? It’s infinite. How much depth to our souls? Infinite. Yet we can feel so very limited sometimes. We can feel cold, confused, sick, emotionally unstable. We can feel so. very. stuck. What’s the solution? It starts with recalling the basic truth: Life is full of abundance. In some traditions, this infinite energy is called “Prana” or “Life-force Energy.” “Prana” is found in all things, flowing in different ways and amounts but intrinsically ever-present. In the Jewish tradition, this can be loosely translated as the “Shechina.” Some sort of consciousness is implied. The main idea is an interconnected web of exquisite energy that masterfully makes up “this world.” How else can we tap into what’s

known as “Pranic Abundance”? 1) Stretching - By stretching and through slow movements, we break from our routine time & space-bound realities. These exercises connect us with the healing power of Prana. The simple act of devoting time to stretching, walking slowly or dancing consciously can significantly aid our mental & emotional wellbeing. 2) Breathing - Sounds simple, but it isn’t. Notice when you are

How much air surrounds us? Infinite air. How much space surrounds us? Infinite space. What is the destiny of the human race? What potential do we have? Infinite. stressed, depressed or upset that you literally contract. By breathing we reopen our pores, hearts and minds. By breathing we reconnect with the infinite air and space around us. By breathing deep we press *refresh* for our cells and our organs. We cleanse ourselves deeply and renew our faith and hope in life itself. Breathing is at

the very core of life and is a powerful tool. The rhythm of our breath can be used to bring us into or out of different states. 3) Love - When times are difficult we can always, always connect to a deep love within. This might mean our connection to G-d, or to ourselves. It might mean remembering the love of our parents or grandparents, siblings or dear friends. The difference between a reaction and a response is just space & time. And what do we do in that space and time? We pause. Breathe. We reconnect to ourselves, G-d and/or love. 4) Nature - Like we said: “Abundance is natural.” In other words: Nature is abundant. The feeling of constriction, lack, etc. also comes from surrounding ourselves with inanimate, constricted material things. We live in cement buildings with metal bed-frames, wooden tables & synthetic carpet. The key is to reconnect with living things which naturally inspire life in us: plants, sky, earth, forests, oceans, sunshine, people, curiosity, creativity... It is very important on the path of healing to feel connected to living things. 5) Depth - A sense of meaning or purpose in life infuses every moment with an experience of the infinite. There’s an overwhelming philosophy these days that: ‘Life is Random; Surface. There’s nothing beyond this world, and if there is, it’s unfathomable and likely a monster

playing a videogame.’ This cannot be farther from the truth. Regardless of our beliefs, to remain seeking and growing in spirituality and depth is something that will aid us keeping our ‘heads above the waves,’; allowing the little things to pass without harshly upsetting us. 6) Healthy Food - One of the most physical things we do every day is eat. What we eat has a very significant effect on us! It can bring us down or take us up. The more fresh, natural & nourishing food we have, the better we will feel. The more processed, ‘partial’, chemical-ridden foods we have, the worst we feel. Connecting with natural, organic foods connects us with the infinitude of nature, connecting us with Prana: healing, life-force energy. Similarly, a homemade meal made by someone who loves you is very different than a ready-made mass-produced meal. 7) And More! - So many things can be included here. The main principle is that they have a positive effect on us. Seeing beauty, smelling wonderful smells, reading something that tickles our fancy, a conversation with an influential role model, making art, writing a heartfelt letter, working on our characters, doing a good deed. Crunchy All in One Salad Salad is a staple in our home the only thing that changes are the toppings and dressings. Always experimenting and trying to make it varied and interesting. Crunchy is one our favorite tastes so here are some variety of crunchy toppings for your all in one salad, a meal in itself. You can choose to make them with a dairy, fish, chicken or meat. Served with a hearty soup and a whole grain slice of bread they are an all in one meal. Ingredients 1 (5-ounce) package Romaine lettuce 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup roasted pumpkin seeds/ or sesame seeds or pine nuts 1/4 cup diced red onion 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese 1/4 cup sliced black olives 1/2 chopped Roma tomatoes Dressing ingredients 1/2 cup sugar free apricot jam or preserves

2 Tbs balsamic vinegar 2 Tbs Dijon mustard 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 cup olive oil 2 Tbs water Directions In a large salad bowl, combine the greens, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, red onion, olives, tomatoes and goat cheese. In a medium bowl, whisk together the jam, vinegar, mustard, and pepper until thoroughly combined. Whisk in oil then water. Make the dressing by combining all ingredients until smooth. Just before serving, drizzle 1/4 cup dressing over salad and toss until evenly coated, adding more as desired. Cover and refrigerate any remaining dressing. Preparation 10 minutes Serves 4


All in One Easy Comfort Supper Looking for an easy way of putting supper on the table quickly this dish is perfectly suited for it as it can be prepped the day before. Use leftover cooked potatoes and have your nourishing meal ready in minutes. Ingredients 4 Tbs butter 3/4 cup chopped onions 1/2 cup chopped red or green bell pepper 2 boiled or baked potatoes, peeled and sliced 6 eggs 2 Tbs milk Salt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional) 50

Directions In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions and peppers and saute about 5 minutes, or until onions are softened. Add potatoes and sautĂŠ about 10 minutes, or until mixture starts to brown. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, beat eggs with milk, salt, and pepper. Pour egg mixture into skillet and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, if desired. Stir gently 8 to 10 minutes, or until eggs are set but not dry. Serve immediately. Preparation 20 Minutes Serves 4

Double Cheese Pancakes Pancakes are a treat for special days. It has a warming effect on a cold day! These Double Cheese Pancakes are light, fluffy, and have just the right amount of cheesiness to them. Plus, they’ve got a wonderful flavor that makes them a great option for breakfast or even dinner! Watch your children’s eyes light up when you serve them these delightful pancakes. Ingredients 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 cup cottage cheese 8 eggs 1 cup bread crumbs 2 tsp butter, melted 1 Tbs sugar 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

Directions In a large bowl, with an electric mixer on medium speed, beat cream cheese and cottage cheese; add eggs and continue beating until well mixed. Slowly stir in remaining ingredients except 1/2 cup butter and let sit 10 minutes so bread crumbs absorb liquid. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter. Spoon 1/4 cup batter per pancake into skillet and cook 4 to 6 minutes, or until browned on both sides, turning halfway through cooking. Remove to a rimmed baking sheet and place in a 200 degree oven to keep warm. Repeat process until all batter is used, adding more butter as needed. Serve immediately. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 4

Garden Pasta Toss Deciding between making a pasta salad or veggie salad for the next family get-together? No need to choose one over the other when you can serve this Garden Pasta Toss that will satisfy your cravings for both pasta and vegetables. Pasta is an all time favorite with young and old. Combining it with vegetables and a good dressing they can afford a delicious meal in minutes, which even teenagers can help prepare. It is even worthy of company.

1/2 tsp salt 1 (16-ounce) container reduced-fat sour cream

Directions Cook the pasta according to the package directions; drain, rinse, drain again, and set aside in a large bowl. Cover to keep warm. Meanwhile, coat a large nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Add the broccoli, mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper; cook over medium-high heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often. Add the water, Ingredients 12 ounces uncooked tri-colored spiral or other twist- basil, thyme, crushed red pepper, and salt; mix until well combined. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 to 3 ed pasta minutes, stirring occasionally. 3 cups frozen broccoli florets thawed Reduce the heat to low then stir in the sour cream 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, quartered and continue stirring until heated through. Pour 1 large red onion, cut in half and sliced over the pasta; toss and serve immediately. 1 medium red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips Preparation 20 minutes 1 cup water Serves 6 2 tsp dried basil 1 tsp dried thyme (optional) 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper

Healthy Pancakes These delicious healthful and protein full, pancakes are guilt-free and easy enough for Wednesday supper or for any weekday brunch. Watch your children say YAY to dairy treats and thank you wholeheartedly for this treat. Ingredients 1 cup oats ground 1 cup fat-free Greek yogurt 6 egg whites 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 Tbs honey 1/2 tsp cinnamon Directions Grind oats in a blender. Set aside. Mix everything except the oats. Once you have a smooth liquid, add the oats and blend until just mixed (you want the batter to be a little lumpy). Let the batter rest for 5 minutes. Coat a skillet with nonstick spray, then place over medium-high heat. Add 1/4 cup batter to the pan at a time, flipping when the pancake starts to bubble. Top with your favorite jam, or drizzle with maple syrup Preparation 20 minutes Serves 4 - 2 pancakes per serving

Cherry Berry Cheesecake Cobbler Here is a great dessert to end your dairy meal. Easy to prepare and oozing with flavor sure to become a family favorite. Ingredients 16 ounces whipped cream cheese 1 cup sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 large egg 2 egg whites 1 can (20 ounces) light or regular cherry pie filling 2 cups chopped McIntosh apples 3 cup flour 1/2 cup low-fat lemon or vanilla yogurt Preparation Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with canola cooking spray. Mix cream cheese, vanilla, and sugar in mixer bowl on medium speed until smooth. Add the egg and egg whites and blend well. Pour into prepared baking dish. In an 8 cup measure or similar, stir the apples into the cherry pie filling. Spread the fruit topping evenly over the cream cheese mixture in baking dish. In same 8 cup measure, blend flour sugar vanilla sugar and yogurt with a fork (mixture will be crumbly). Spread over the fruit and cream cheese and bake for about 25 minutes. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Sprinkle with confection sugar just before serving for a nice effect. Preparation 15 minutes Serves 16
