One Choice Can Alter Your Destiny
by Rabbi Daniel Cohen
W
hat are the three or four most significant decisions you’ve made in your life? Which choices have given you the greatest pride? When we’re confronted with these questions, the first answers that come to mind are the larger events in our lives. We think about a career path, choosing our spouse, a decision to move to a new area. It’s true that these choices affect our lives in significant ways. But when reflecting on the totality of our impact

on the world – our existence and legacy – we come to realize that in many cases the seemingly more trivial decisions constitute the essence of who we really are. These are the courageous choices that emerge from a steadfast commitment to our values. What do we want our reputation to be? How do our actions reflect on our family, community and Hashem? King Solomon reflected that a good reputation is more valuable than wealth. He challenges us to ponder what mark we truly want to make in the world. What do we truly want to leave behind?
One of the core principles of leading a life of deep fulfillment and endurance is our ability to make courageous choices in every moment. Do we choose based on convenience or conviction, principle or pressure? Studies show that most people rarely find the inner strength to make the best choices. When we’re afraid of making tough decisions, it often leads to a life of remorse and regret. In a recent book, Australian palliative nurse Bronnie Ware notes that the most common regret at the end of one’s life is wishing that “I had the

courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” We’re making hundreds of meaningful choices every day. These small decisions require reservoirs of strength, faith, and clarity. Do you want to be remembered as a giver or a taker? Do you want to be remembered for your honesty, authenticity, and warmth? We make a promise; do we get back to someone with an answer? We’re asked to help someone; do we seize the chance to help? We’re entrusted with confidential information; do we keep a secret? We’re exhausted at the end of a hard day; do we smile when we walk into our home and give our family our best? Every moment we’re given two paths to follow and we’re challenged with a chance to either elevate our lives and the world around us or not. A choice not taken is also a choice. Bear in the mind the Warren Buffet 20/5 formula: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” Listen to the “final” words of Peregrine Financial Group CEO Russell Wasendorf Sr., which he penned in a suicide attempt note. In his letter, he confessed to bilking customers out of $200 million: “I had no access to additional capital and I was forced into a difficult decision: Should I go out of business or cheat? I guess my ego was too big to admit failure. So I cheated; I falsified the very core of the financial documents of PFG, the bank statements.” One choice altered his destiny.
It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.
I can guarantee you that the headlines about cases like Wasendorf are merely the culmination of small

decisions that spiraled out of control. One compromise leads to the next. Lives are ruined and the fallout shakes the foundations of our families, businesses, government, and schools. In stark contrast, one of the most respected financiers in the world, Steve Schwartzman, CEO of Blackstone, the largest hedge fund in the world, shared his unwavering dedication to building a firm rooted in honesty and ethics. “When I interview new recruits to the firm, I warn them that if even only once they engage in behavior that smells wrong, not only will I fire them but I will ruin them, prosecute them, and destroy them. When asked by my partners why I am so harsh, I explain that I want everyone in my firm to be deeply rooted in doing the right thing. Your integrity is only tested when it costs you something.” Do we possess such courage with our own convictions? One split-second decision defines us, embodies us, and is how we’ll be remembered. Every week in the news, we see examples of the truism that a reputation is built over a lifetime, but one moral indiscretion destroys one. Thousands of years before social media, the Ethics of the Fathers taught, “Do not say something we do not want to be heard, for in the end it will be heard.” No action is private. Every choice reflects our past and determines our future. Who are you? What are the values that define you? Which beliefs of yours are worth fighting for? Spend some time reflecting on these questions. Only when you know your values can you live them. If we search for approval or accolades before making a small decision, we won’t be prepared for what could be a truly transformative decision. We won’t possess the strength to express our deepest beliefs and aspirations. Our lives are, in fact, constituted by the heartfelt choices we make every day.

himon E., a 16-year-old Israeli Shotokan karate champion, was in Philadelphia with eleven other Israeli boys for his first international competition. He had trained long and hard, but eying his opponents, especially the Japanese contingent, he felt daunted. The Japanese contenders seemed to have karate in their blood. What did he have in his blood? Suddenly it hit him: He had not seen any of the contenders pray. Although Shimon was not religious, he intuited that he should ask Hashem for help. At the beginning of each match, he prayed for Divine assistance. Shimon scored victory after victory; by the end of the tournament, he was #1 in his division in Israel and #2 in the world. As Shimon described it years later,
24
his prayer was not a magic formula to strengthen himself or disable his opponent. Rather, it simply expressed his recognition that Hashem is the ultimate causal factor. Of course, had he not trained hard, his victory would have been impossible. But watching many sports competitions had shown him that human effort even augmented by tremendous talent did not always spell success. He concluded that unlikely victories as well as startling defeats are determined by the Divine. Many years ago, my husband and I invested most of our savings in a mutual fund called Tiger. Tiger was run by Julian Robertson, who was rated one of the smartest and sharpest fund managers in the world. Robertson’s genius quickly proved itself. In a short time, our investment tripled. We were euphoric.
www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885
Then, literally overnight, Tiger plunged. It had something to do with the Japanese selling off yen. I never understood the intricate economics of it, but suddenly all our gains had vanished. Robertson wrote a letter to his investors explaining how this unforeseen debacle of a single day could not have been anticipated even by his expertise, and how he planned to restore Tiger to its former glory. The final bombastic sentence of the letter made me cringe. Robertson assured his investors not to worry, because “This Tiger will roar again.” It didn’t. Within several months the fund was defunct. Robertson didn’t realize what 16-yearold Shimon knew: that Hashem is the ultimate causal factor. Although human effort is essential, no matter how smart
we are or how hard we work, victory and defeat, gain and loss, success and failure are ultimately determined by God.
Crying Out Our ancestors in Egypt took a long time to grasp this crucial point. During 116 years of slavery and 80 years of sadistic oppression, it did not occur to them to appeal to God. Assimilated into the majority culture, our ancestors worshipped the idols of that time and place. They descended almost to the lowest level of spiritual impurity, forgetting the one Supreme Power taught by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Instead, they looked for their salvation to political changes, such as the advent of a new, more compassionate Pharaoh. Only when Pharaoh died and his successor continued his oppressive policies did our ancestors despair of any amelioration of their condition through natural means. Only at that point, the Torah testifies, did they “cry out” to God. The next verse tells us that God immediately initiated the process of the Redemption. The “crying out” that catalyzed the Exodus from Egypt was not what we would call prayer. They pronounced no words, no lengthy supplications, no eloquent appeals for Divine mercy. Rather, their crying out was a simple, inarticulate turning to God as the only source of salvation. Yet that basic recognition jump-started all the miracles of the Exodus.
What the Gas Attendant Knew The Twelve-Step Program is the world’s most successful treatment for serious addictions and compulsions. I once accompanied an alcoholic friend to an AA meeting in Boston. The first speaker to address the large group introduced himself as Tom, a recovering alcoholic. He was dressed like a gas station attendant. “Every morning,” Tom declared, “I get on my knees and beg God to get me through another day without alcohol.” At that point, he had been dry for 22 years. The first two steps of the Twelve-Step
Program are: 1) To admit that you are powerless (over alcohol or overeating or internet addiction or whatever) and 2) to believe in a Higher Power who can liberate you. The next ten steps lay out an arduous program of “fearless moral inventory,” admitting wrong-doing, making amends, etc. The Twelve-Step Program requires tremendous commitment and effort, but it starts with the simple, adamant recognition that Hashem, and only Hashem, is in ultimate control. I wish that Julian Robertson had known what Tom knew.
Gift of Freedom To accomplish anything — to win a karate tournament, strike it rich, score high on a test, marry the spouse of your dreams, get admitted to the college/grad school/med school of your choice, find a good job during a recession, or overcome
How to jumpstart your personal exodus.
psychological and emotional bondages — you have to work hard. Along with (not instead of) that effort, you have to know that Hashem runs the world. Passover is the holiday of the Divine give-away. To receive the gift of atonement on Yom Kippur and the ensuing joy on Sukkot, we have to do the arduous inner work of repenting for and rectifying our bad behavior. To receive the gift of the Torah on Shavuot, we have to “count the Omer,” working our way up through the 49 levels of spiritual refinement. The gift of inner freedom on Passover, however, is a freebie. On Seder night, Hashem bestows on all Jews the possibility of redemption from whatever inner bondage holds them. It’s like winning the lottery. Of course, to win the lottery you have to exert yourself to the extent of going to a lottery booth and buying a ticket, looking up the winning number, and showing up to claim your prize. To become worthy of the Exodus from Egypt, our ancestors had to exert themselves to the extent of slaughtering the Passover Offering and smearing its blood on their doorposts. Today, to become worthy of the liberation afforded by Passover, you have to exert yourself to the extent of attending a Seder, eating the requisite amount of matzah, drinking the four cups of wine, and carefully fulfilling the other mitzvahs of the Seder. To claim your Passover gift of inner freedom, two other steps are necessary: Decide before the Seder, “What am I enslaved to?” The possible answers are many: anger, peer approval, materialism, jealousy, self-destructive habits, fear of commitment, impulsivity, resentment, laziness, desire to control, dishonesty, a critical nature as demanding as any taskmaster, etc. Then, during the Seder, as you eat your matzah in silence, commit to striving to accomplish that change and appeal to Hashem to free you from that particular bondage. This does not preclude working hard every day to overcome that bondage. But achieving true freedom requires admitting that what really catalyzes the process of inner liberation is the recognition that Hashem, and only Hashem, is the source of that liberation —and of everything else.

5TH GENERATION OF WINE MAKERS
essence CABERNET SAUVIGNON
In 1880, Zeev Teperberg (2nd generation) joined his father Avraham, together they developed the winery in Jerusalem and overcame rough times. 30 years pass and the winery is transformed from a small family winery into a major successful enterprise. This high quality wine series is distinguished by its unique growing environment and terroir, which fully reflects soil and climate conditions. The meticulous winemaking process of these varieties strongly emphasizes the characteristics of each and every vineyard where the grapes were originally grown. All wines in this series matured in French oak barrels for 18 months and have great aging potential to improve for many years to come.

Pesach New & Original menus Gitta Bixenspanner n.d. It’s for real Pesach is almost here. As we approach this great Yom Tov the most celebrated of all as well as the most time consuming; we turn our attention to preparing tantalizing meals for all family and friends joining us for the festivities. Here are some original ideas to enhance your Yom Tov meals. IMPORTANT NOTE Make sure all ingredients used are Kosher certified for Pesach. Get inspired by spiralizing Have you heard of zoodles? They’re all the rage these days! Zoodles are zucchini “noodles,” which are made by using a spiralizer (a cool tool for slicing vegetables). They’re a terrific low-carb, diet-friendly choice for a side dish or a meal. Many vegetables lend themselves for spiralizing, used instead of noodles it will increase your health and nutrition in more ways than one. Add some variety to your menu with these innovative ideas. 54
To be able to create a variety of vegetable noodles you need a good spiralizer, they are available in better houseware stores. There are some with various sizes blades, some that attach to your mixer or hand cranking ones. I actually tried one from the dollar store and was not happy with the results. It was not very user friendly. Don’t have a spiralizer? If you haven’t yet invested in a spiralizer, don’t worry. You can use a mandolin, to achieve julienne veggies or a plain old vegetable peeler (you’ll get ribbons rather than spaghetti). If you have a lot of time on your hands, you can even recreate the same effect by slicing the vegetables thinly with a sharp knife. Here are some simple recipes to whet your appetite. Challenge yourself to experiment with more vegetables and assorted combinations.

Beets, Carrots and Walnut dressing This salad is actually very simple with only two key ingredients but it’s the dressing that brings it to life. The sweetness of carrot and beetroot is elevated by the earthy walnuts and citrus in the dressing. White radish rounds give this dish its final appeal. Ingredients For the salad 4 medium raw beets (I used pink and red) 2 medium carrot 1 medium red onion cut in slices. Sliced white radish For the dressing ½ cup toasted chopped walnuts or any other nut such as almonds, filberts, macadamia nuts ¼ cup olive oil 2 Tbs lemon juice
56
1 small garlic clove, finely diced or grated (if using) ½ tsp raw honey ¼ tsp sea salt Pinch of pepper Instructions Peel and slice beetroots and carrots very thinly with a peeler or use a spiralizer to make noodle strips Place dressing ingredients in a food processor, blender or a mortar and pestle and grind until fairly smooth. It’s ok to have a few crunchy bits in there. Toss beetroot and carrot noodles with 2-3 tablespoons of the dressing (more if you like) and top with sliced radish slices. Preparation 15 minutes Serves 4-6

{Raw} Beet and Sweet Potato Beets and sweet potato combine well in a crunchy and tasty salad. They can be marinated for a delicious flavor or they can be stir fried for 5 minutes for a softer texture. If you appreciate salads you will like this one. Ingredients: 2 large sweet potatoes 1 bunch beets (3-4) 4 scallions 1/2 cup toasted sliced almonds Garlic Lime Vinaigrette Directions: Peel the sweet potatoes and beets. Then use a spiralizer to cut the veggies into long curly strips. Use a pair of kitchen shears to cut the pieces into manageable lengths. Mix the beet and sweet potato ribbons together in a large bowl. Then cut the scallion tops on an angle to make long rings. Sprinkle the salad with scallions and toasted sliced almonds. Toss with your favorite Pesach dressing. Make a vinaigrette with lemon juice, oil, a dash of salt and sugar to taste. PREP TIME: 10 minutes Serves 4-6

SPIRALIZED SPICY SWEET POTATO “FRIES” These sweet potato fries can be baked in a hot oven or fried in a large pot of oil. They are delicious as a side dish or served over salad or mashed potatoes. Ingredients 1 sweet potato, peeled, 1 Tbs extra virgin olive oil Salt, to taste 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp garlic powder *If you don’t have the spiralizer, use the smallest noodle blade on your version or a peeler to cut long
58
strips. Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spread the noodles out on a large baking tray and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss the noodles together gently with your fingers, coating the noodles in the oil. Season with salt, paprika and garlic powder. Roast for 20 minutes, tossing halfway through (gently be careful not to break the tender noodles!) After 15 minutes, make sure to check the noodles to prevent burning. If starting to burn, toss those pieces gently. Serve, discarding any completely burnt pieces.

VARIATION: Crunchy Spiralized Fried Potato Chips I was served this dish at a family Simcha and enjoyed it immensely. Thus I am sharing it. It makes a delicious crunchy salad topping. Be sure to make enough as this is a true crowd pleaser. Peel sweet potatoes or white potatoes discard peel. Cut potatoes into quarters lengthwise and using the peeler continue slicing each quarter into long thin strips. Fill a large pot with 2 cups oil and heat up until very hot and throw potatoes into the sizzling oil. Allow to cook until crisp. Remove to a plate lined with paper towel. Serve immediately over salad or as a side to meat or fish. Preparation 10 minutes Serves 4-6

Nissan: Blossoms of Redemption by Rebbetzin Tziporah Heller
N
issan! The name itself evokes a sense of freshness and renewal. From the very beginning of Jewish history, Nissan has been synonymous with a longing for redefinition and hope. The Talmud tells us that Abraham observed Pesach, Obviously it was not to commemorate the Exodus, which only took place centuries later. Maharal explains that the Nissan season ‘spoke to him.’ The more Abraham saw physical evidence of Hashem’s love and creativity, the more humble he felt. So during the Passover season, Abraham chose to eliminate everything from his life that was puffed up -- a semblance of the over inflated ego. This included all leavened food. It was Abraham’s way of holding on to his recognition of what renewal really means and where it comes from.

following the shepherd. Being a follower is sometimes a mature choice, not a passive failure. The Jewish people made the choice to follow Hashem, and not our own inflated egos as people. In Egypt, as we seesawed between the twin forces of assimilation and oppression, we came to realize that relying on transient humans for our selfdefinition was national suicide. We chose to follow Hashem. We also came to realize that no amount of autonomous political action would bring us the spiritual freedom we craved. We finally humbled ourselves to acknowledge that the only possible way we’d ever get out of Egypt would be by Hashem’s mercy. Something within us moved, enough for us to follow Hashem into the desert, and later accept His Torah. We were like lambs that finally discovered the shepherd who cares for them. How appropriate that the liberation from Egypt took place in the month of the lamb. Nissan is referred to in the Torah by three names, each one of which opens a door to a deeper understanding: 1) “The First Month” -- The month of redemption is considered even greater
than Tishrei, the month of that the universe came into being. The world was created with a purpose, which is that we humans imbue it with purpose, in order to rectify ourselves individually and the world at large. Nissan is the month in which our people emerged with this goal as their national definition. Nachmanides, the great 13th century sage and commentator, goes so far as to say that when assigning a number to each month, it is a mitzvah to count beginning with Nissan, to increase our awareness of the miracles that led to our liberation. From his perspective, it’s better, when possible, to refer to the secular months by their names -- January, February, etc. Assigning numbers would dull our sensitivity that “month number one” is number one is reserved for that month which leads us toward national self-definition. 2) “Aviv” -- This name means spring, the time when the physical and spiritual messages of rebirth meet and blossom. 3) “Nissan” -- Although this name is technically of Babylonian origin, the Aramaic word Nissan is related to the Hebrew word, nitzan, meaning bud. Song of Songs, King Solomon’s epic poem in which he depicts the love that bonds us to Hashem, redemption is symbolically referred to as “the time that the buds were seen in our land,” which means that the inarticulate earth gave birth to a people who soon would flower.
Special Days Besides Passover, other days in Nissan carry deep significance. The first day of Nissan marks the inauguration of the Mishkan, the portable tabernacle that accompanied the Jewish people during 40 years of wandering in the desert. The Mishkan served as a visual allegory of how the macrocosm and microcosm can both be transformed as a sanctuary for Hashem. In the Mishkan, each vessel, material and metal was carefully selected to symbolize specific ways in which the animal vegetable and mineral worlds can be uplifted. Years later, the first of Nissan was when the Jews of the Babylonian exile began their return to Israel. The buds had begun to blossom. Amazingly, Nissan is the time when Jews make a special blessing over new blossoms. Upon the first sighting of the new blossoms of fruit trees at the start of spring, the following blessing is recited: Blessed are You, Hashem, our Lord, King of the Universe, for nothing is lacking in His universe and He created within it good creatures and trees, with which to provide pleasure to mankind. The first of Nissan is also the time that most congregations begin their fundraising campaign for Kimcha DiPischa (literally, “flour for Passover”). No Jew can fully experience the freedom of these days while in isolation. The Exodus was the liberation of an entire nation, not of any one individual. No one is free when he knows that his fellow Jew doesn’t have what he needs. In earlier times, the rabbi of the town had the legal authority to mandate contributions. While this is no longer the case, the underlying premise hasn’t changed: that true freedom comes through giving, not taking.
The month that moves us out of being enslaved to our egos.
Shabbat HaGadol When Hashem created the world, His plan was that we choose to know Him. When we internalize His presence by choosing goodness, in a certain sense we receive the greatest gift of all: Hashem Himself. The kabbalists state this idea as: “An awakening [of Divine mercy] from above, must be preceded by an awakening [of commitment] from below.” For this reason, Hashemd didn’t free us from Egypt without challenging us to make a commitment to Him, so that we would share in the process of redemption. The way that Hashemd challenged us was by requiring each family to take a sheep, an important symbol in the pantheon of pagan belief that characterized ancient Egypt. Each family tied the sheep to their bedposts for four days, and then offered it as a sacrifice to Hashem. The day they took the sheep was Shabbat, the 10th of Nissan. We see this day as the beginning of the redemption, for it is on this day that we followed Hashem’s instructions, to later slaughter the sheep, even at the risk of enraging our Egyptian captors. But our trust in Hashem made this act possible. On Shabbat HaGadol, it is a wellestablished custom to read those sections of the Haggadah that deal with the miracles of the liberation -- i.e. from “We were slaves” until “You brought us to the Temple to atone for our transgressions.” It is also a custom for the rabbi of every synagogue to deliver a major sermon on this Shabbat.
Bedikat Chametz The deadline for removing all leavened (“inflated”) food from one’s house is the evening, one day prior to the Seder. The idea of ridding our homes of chametz is that it is a tool to simultaneously rid ourselves of its spiritual counterpart, egotism. Egocentricity is the source of all evil. Hashem infused these times with the spiritual power to destroy the ego’s grip on our personalities.

1400 East 4th Street • 718.339.5900 • timelesstable.com Getting ready for this night requires quite a bit of physical and spiritual preparation. For some people, “Passover cleaning” begins at least a month before the holiday arrives. They spend days removing every trace of leavened food from the home, sometimes getting involved with general spring cleaning and possibly even a tad of redecorating or painting. It is important to realize that the religious requirements are relatively simple, and in situations where doing a great deal of cleaning is just not feasible, it is best to stick to the basics. The focus should be on doing Hashem’s will -getting rid of leavened food and negating the ego. Indeed, freshness and renewal most easily comes when we let go of the heaviness of self-importance and give ourselves permission to be simple. For the more we open our hearts to Hashems presence and love, the more ridiculous our pomposity feels. The formal act of searching to remove chametz is called Bedikat Chametz. The examination begins at night. Every nook and cranny has to be checked. The
examination must be done by direct light -- i.e. using a candle or flashlight. It is customary to hide 10 pieces of bread (remember where you put them!), which symbolize the 10 mystical Sefirot in reverse. The kabbalists use the Sefirot to describe the ways in which Hashem reveals His presence to us, for instance through his continual outpouring of goodness. Since we live in a world in which free choice is authentic, we acknowledge that if it is possible to be good, and we find it attractive, we will find doing evil equally as compelling. Each one of the 10 Sefirot has a negative counterpart. Passover is a time that all the forces of evil can be defeated, just as they were in Egypt over 3,000 years ago. The timing is critical. Rabbi Chaim Vital tells us that the first 13 days of Nissan hint at the first 13 years of one’s life. When the 13th year is over, and the 14th year is about to begin, something crucial happens to us. The yetzer tov (positive impulses) becomes just as forceful in the battle for one’s personality as the yetzer
hara (negative impulses). It is then that the ability to examine and introspect begins, in the same way that when the 13th day of Nissan ends, we now can search, discover and ultimately destroy the actual chametz that is so much part of our lives.
Bitul Chametz The climax of our search for chametz is our stating that “whatever chametz is in our possession, is now considered to be as ownerless as the dust of the earth.” The next day, the 10 pieces of bread, plus any residual chametz, must be destroyed. As you sit down to the Seder, to relive the enslavement and the Exodus, you will eat the matzah and drink the wine. These are tools to help you write your own personal story of redemption, added to the millions of stories that are part of our unwritten history. May we all merit to see the buds of Nissan blossom into full and genuine redemption. And may we spend the next Seder together, in a free and rebuilt Jerusalem.
