I
nstead of counting “down” toward the big day, we count “up” from one to 50. Why? The Jewish people left Egypt on Passover, and 50 days later (on the holiday of Shavuot) received the Torah at Mount Sinai. Today, in revisiting that Sinai experience, we observe a special mitzvah called “Counting the Omer,” where we actually count aloud each of these days, beginning on the second night of Passover. (The Omer was a special offering brought to the Holy Temple during this season.) Counting in anticipation of an exciting event is quite understandable. At one time or another, we’ve all probably said something like, “Grandma’s coming to visit in a week and a half,” or “Only 17 more days til my birthday!” But there’s one subtle difference: The usual method is to count down toward the big day, whereas in the case of the Omer, we count up from one to 50. Why the difference?
Long-Term Impact To understand, we first need to answer a more basic question: Why did Hashem wait 50 days after the Jews left Egypt before giving the Torah? Why didn’t He simply give it to them in Egypt, or immediately after their departure? The answer is that the Jews were not yet spiritually equipped to receive the Torah. For over 200 years, they had been living in an Egyptian society known to be the world center for immorality

and vice. Even without direct Jewish participation, these influences nonetheless permeated the air and seeped into their consciousness. The primary book of Kabbalah, “The Zohar,” reports that in Egypt the Jews had slipped to the 49th level of spiritual impurity. (50 is the very lowest.) Hashem could not give the Torah at this point. The Jews needed to grow up first, or else they would have squandered the opportunity. The high-impact adventure of the Exodus 10 miraculous plagues and the splitting of the Red Sea launched the Jews into physical freedom. Yet the miracles of Egypt were only a jumpstart to the spiritual possibilities that lay ahead. A one-time experience, as powerful as it is, does not permanently change anyone’s emotional attitude. That is only possible through practice and adjustment over time. It reminds me of a scene from the film “Trading Places.” Eddie Murphy has gone from beggar to wealth in a few hours, and the first thing he does upon entering his own luxury apartment is to steal things! His physical body had been transported to opulence, but emotionally he was left behind. You can take the Jew out of Egypt, but you can’t take Egypt out of the Jew. I’ve witnessed a similar phenomenon at the Discovery Seminar, a dramatic presentation of the rational basis for Jewish belief. Many people leave the seminar with the astounding conviction that Hashem exists and that He gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Yet without proper followup, the impact lasts but a few days. Real change occurs only

through steady day-to-day growth and a commitment to a consistent program of contemplation and study. Now we can understand why the 50 days of the Omer is counted in a forward progression. We begin the process at the 49th level of spiritual impurity, and every day we peel away another layer of gunk, to reveal the original, pure soul we each possess. That’s why every step both reduces the negative number and increases the positive number the single step of peeling away a layer automatically reveals the corresponding positive side.
A Time of Growth Classic Talmudic commentators say that the days of counting the Omer are the most auspicious for acquiring these spiritual levels. This necessity for self-growth is stressed in the Torah’s description of Abraham: “Abraham was old, he came with his days” (Genesis 24:1). “He came with his days” teaches us that Abraham used each of his
days to the fullest extent. At the end of his life, he came to old age “with all his days” in hand. No day was without its requisite growth. When it comes to children, we take for granted that growth and development is part of childhood. You don’t expect a 10-year-old to act the same way he did at age five. But somehow as adults, we lose that impulse to continue growing. Yet should a 30-year-old act as he did at age 25? As adults, we could be using those five years in a very powerful way. The formula for staying young is to continue growing. Losing that capacity at any age is tragic. Any time we’re not growing and changing, we’re not living. We’re just existing.
One Step at a Time A major impediment to growth is the feeling of being overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task. But Judaism is not all-or-nothing. If I cannot have 1,000 gold coins, does that mean I should not strive to have even one?! The biggest reason people fail is that they have set a goal which is too lofty and unattainable. We inevitably fall short and get discouraged. In Jacob’s famous dream, Hashem shows him a vision of a ladder reaching toward heaven. Spiritual growth, like climbing a ladder, must be one step at a time. By setting small, incremental goals, we will be encouraged by the periodic success. To make the plan foolproof, make your initial goal something you know you can reach. Tasting success will bolster your confidence and determination, and you can use this energy to strive for higher goals. Remember, the longest journey begins with just one step. And what goes
in slow, will remain. The story is told of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter (19th century Europe) who took upon himself to lead an entire city back to Torah observance. He set up a weekly class and began by telling them, “If you have to work on Shabbat, at least try to minimize the violation.” In today’s lexicon, that would mean walking instead of driving, or setting your TV on a timer. With this approach, Rabbi Salanter was able over a few years to turn the community around to full Shabbat observance one step at a time. Take pleasure in the times you achieved your goal, and use that as a motivation to improve further. Don’t castigate yourself if you do not always succeed. No human being is perfect. The Kabbalists say that spiritual growth is “two steps forward and one step back.” We will inevitably have setbacks. What’s important is that we’re heading in the right direction. King Solomon tells us in Proverbs (24:16): “The Tzaddik falls seven times and gets up.” The definition of a Tzaddik is not someone who never makes a mistake, but rather someone who, although he may fail, does not give up. He tries again and does not despair!
Spiritual Accounting One important principle to remember is that you are not competing with anyone but yourself. Secular society has accustomed us to compete against others whether in business or on the tennis court. Of course, healthy competition is good. But life is not a race to beat the other guy; life is only a race to conquer yourself. As we climb the ladder, it’s more important which direction we’re headed than which

rung we’re on. Nowhere in the entire Torah is the date of Shavuot mentioned. It merely takes place at the end of 50 days because the key is to get there at your own pace, following these steps. To maintain growth, a good rule of thumb is to always be a bit uncomfortable. You don’t want to climb a ladder and get stuck between rungs! It also helps to reinforce your goals by writing them down. Writing helps a person to concentrate and clarify his thoughts. A business person would surely write out goals and keep an accurate tally of their progress. In Judaism, this is called Cheshbon a spiritual accounting. Keep a notebook for writing down these daily goals, and make a chart to track your progress. Place this in a conspicuous place like in your daytimer or on the refrigerator, and then review your goals by reading them aloud. The Torah, in describing the Omer, says, “count for you” (Leviticus 23:15) because each person has to
do this for himself, speaking it aloud. Strategize! As with anything, the key is consistency. Choose a convenient time and commit to working on this at least 15 minutes every day. Don’t postpone learning for “afterwards,” at which time it becomes late and you may be too tired. Say to yourself that you are going to dedicate 15 minutes and nothing is going to stop you. Close your door, unplug your phone, and log offline. If you need a daily reminder, try the buddy system. Ideally, at the end of the Omer process, we will have experienced a journey of self-improvement and be ready to receive the Torah. The holiday we’re working toward is called “Shavuot,” which means “weeks.” The name itself tells us that without the weeks of preparation beforehand, there is no Shavuot. merica owes a debt of gratitude to a largely unsung Jewish hero who helped establish the sweet land of liberty in the 1700s. Haym Salomon was a patriotic broker who helped finance the American Revolution. In 1975 the United States Postal Service issued a 10-cent commemorative stamp honoring Salomon as a “Contributor to the Cause” of the American Revolution. The back of the stamp reads: “Financial Hero – Businessman and broker Haym Salomon was responsible for raising most of the money needed to finance the American Revolution and later to save the new nation from collapse.” The Polish-born Jewish immigrant

knew the heights of success and the depths of tragedy in his short life. Born in 1740, he would count the first president, George Washington, among his friends and loan hundreds of thousands of dollars to the government – millions in today’s dollars. In addition, he would make private loans to prominent statesmen and historical figures like James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Sources differ, saying he either charged them no interest or interest well below market rates. Salomon’s adventures began early in his life, when he spent several years moving around Western Europe and England. He became fluent in many languages that put him in good stead for the rest of his life. He landed in New York in 1772 and quickly established himself as a merchant

and dealer in foreign securities. Soon he became active in the patriot cause when 13 of Great Britain’s North American colonies fought for political independence during the American Revolution (177583). After a fire destroyed much of New York, the British arrested Salomon as a spy in 1776 but then pardoned him and made him an interpreter with their German mercenaries. The rollercoaster of his existence seemed to take a happy twist in 1777, when he married Rachel Franks, whose brother Isaac served as a lieutenant colonel on George Washington’s staff. Two-and-a-half centuries later, Haym and Rachel’s ketubah (marriage contract) is part of the American Jewish Historical Society’s collection. But another downturn soon followed.

Salomon was arrested again in 1778 and sentenced to death by hanging. He had aided prisoners of the British in escaping and encouraged German troops to desert. Somehow, though, he managed to escape to Philadelphia, which eventually would become the temporary capital of the independent United States. Salomon fled penniless, as his property had been confiscated. His family soon joined him, and he landed on his feet once again as a broker and dealer in securities. He would become paymaster general of the French troops fighting for the American cause. Salomon happened to be in the right place at the right time. He arrived in Philadelphia as the Continental Congress needed money to support the American Revolution. The Congress had no power of direct taxation. In 1781 Congress appointed Robert Morris the superintendent of finances in charge of wrangling the chaos. He started the Bank of North America and “relied on public-spirited financiers like Salomon
to subscribe to the bank, find purchasers for government bills of exchange and lend their own money to the government,” according to a National Park Service history of the American Revolution. For instance, he was an influential and generous member of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel congregation, where a sign in the cemetery acknowledges the Revolutionary patriot as one of the notables buried there. Alaska Airlines and the Jews of Yemen
T
he story of the modern exodus of “Beta Israel” the Jews of Ethiopia during Operations Moses and Solomon, which together airlifted some 22,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel, is well known. Less well known is the dramatic exodus of over 48,000 Jews from Yemen. Almost unknown is the role played by Alaska Airlines. No one knows for certain when the first Jews came to Yemen. Local legend has them being sent as traders by King Solomon. In any event, Jews have lived in Yemen for many centuries. In that povertystricken country, the Jews were the poorest

and lowest of citizens living in contempt and on sufferance as dhimmis. However, in their synagogues and schools, they taught their children to learn and write Hebrew. They never forgot their faith, protected the traditions, observed the Sabbath and passed the Torah and Talmud to each succeeding generation. Following World War I, when Yemen became independent, life in that Muslim country for the Jews became intolerable. From Despair to Danger In 1947, following the United Nations vote to partition Palestine, the situation of the Jews in Yemen turned from despair to physical danger. Arab rioters in the adjacent port of Aden, then a British Crown colony and now part of Yemen, killed 82 Jews and torched the Jewish quarter. The establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948 and Israel’s War of Independence increasingly endangered the Yemeni Jews as it did in all Arab countries. It was not, however, until May 1949, when the Imam

They longed to return to Zion if only they had the means. At that time, slightly over 49,000 Jews lived in Yemen. As the War of Independence ended in early 1949, Israel was devastated and virtually bankrupt. Notwithstanding, David BenGurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister, defying logic and the advice of his economic advisors, ordered the immediate and rapid “Ingathering of the Exiles”. Where would Israel get the money? “Go to the Jews in the Diaspora and ask them for the money,” BenGurion answered the skeptics.
from the U.S. Government and within a year became the world’s largest charter airline. The JDC approached Wooten and asked if Alaska Airlines would agree to accept the Yemen airlift. Wooten wanted Alaska Air to take on the mission of mercy
Airplanes Needed Egypt had closed the Suez Canal to the Jews of Yemen; they would have to be transported by air to Israel. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the international Jewish humanitarian aid organization, agreed to fund the Yemenite exodus and organize the airlift, but they needed aircraft. Alaska Airlines was founded in 1932 when Mac McGee purchased a used three passenger Stinson and started an air charter business in Alaska. With the arrival of James Wooten as president in 1947, the airline began to purchase surplus planes
but Ray Marshall, Chairman of the Board, was cool. Marshall felt the deal was a waste of the Airline’s time and money. It would take at least $50,000 to set up the charter, cash that the Airline did not have. Marshall insisted that Wooten front the
funds himself. Wooten raised the $50,000 by borrowing it from a travel agency associated with the JDC. The contract was signed and Operation On Wings of Eagles, more popularly known by its nickname, Operation Magic Carpet commenced. On the Wings of Eagles As Yemen would not permit the Jewish refugees to be flown out of their country, Britain had agreed to the establishment of a transit camp in the adjoining Crown Colony of Aden from which the airlift could commence. Alaska Airlines set up its base in Asmara, Eritrea with their ground crew, pilots and aircraft, – DC-4s and C-46s. The arrangement was to fly from their base in Asmara to Aden each morning, pick up their passengers in Aden and refuel. Thence fly up the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba to the airport in Tel Aviv, unload the refugees, fly to the safety of Cyprus for the night and return to their base in Asmara at dawn, before starting all over again. The round trip would take about 20 hours. The aircraft as configured could not carry enough passengers or sufficient fuel. So the planes were modified by replacing the regular airline seats with rows of benches and fitting extra fuel tanks down the length of the fuselages between the

benches. Aircraft intended to carry 50 passengers could now carry 120 and fuel would last a skinny extra one hour. Meanwhile the transit camp in Aden, called “Camp Geula” (Redemption) was organized by the JDC and staffed by Israeli doctors and social workers under the directorship of Max Lapides, an American Jew. Also headquartered at the camp were emissaries responsible for paying various Yemeni tribal chiefs a “head tax” which would permit the Jewish refugees to pass through their territory As news of the evacuation reached the Jews of Yemen, they left their few possessions behind (except their prayer books and Torahs) and like the biblical exodus began to walk out of slavery into freedom. They traveled in family groups, some hundreds of miles, through wind and sandstorm, vulnerable to robbers and a hostile local population, until half-starved and destitute they reached the border with Aden where Israeli aid workers met them and transported them to the transit camp. There they encountered electricity, medicines, running water, toilets and personal hygiene for the first time. During the entire operation, the Jews of Yemen arrived at Camp Geula in a steady stream, newer ones arriving as an earlier group was airlifted out. Getting the Yemenite Jews to Aden was one problem, getting them on the aircraft was another. Nomads who had never seen an airplane before and never lived anywhere but in a tent, many of the immigrants were frightened and refused to board. Once reminded that their deliverance to Israel by air was prophesized in the Book of Isaiah, “They shall mount up with wings like eagles,” reinforced by the painting of an eagle with
outstretched wings over the door of each aircraft, induced them to board the planes. Once inside many preferred sitting on the floor to unaccustomed soft seats. Keeping them from lighting fires to cook their food was a task. During the flight, about half would get sick vomiting over the extra inside fuel tanks. Notwithstanding, the Yemenites upon landing in Israel chanted blessings and burst into song.
The Irish Moses To start up Operation Magic Carpet, Alaska Airlines sent Portland native Bob Maguire, a pilot with management experience, to the Middle East. Maguire flew between 270 and 300 hours a month. Had he been in the U.S., the limit under its aviation rules was 90 hours. Ben-Gurion called Maguire the “Irish Moses”. The work cost Maguire his career. He contracted a parasite that affected his heart and as a result lost his commercial pilot’s license in the early 1950’s. Another pilot was Warren Metzger, born in Lethbridge who found time between flights to marry his flight attendant. At least one pilot, Stanley Epstein, was Jewish. The airlift that began in June 1948 was hard on the pilots who were flying 16-hour days and hard on the planes that flew well beyond their scheduled service intervals. Fuel was difficult to come by, the desert sand wreaked havoc on the engines and flying was seat-of-the-pants with navigation by dead reckoning and eyesight. The work was dangerous. Many airplanes were shot at. One pilot, getting a little close to Arab territory while approaching Israel, watched tracer bullets arching up towards his airplane. Another
plane had a tire blown out during a bombing raid in Tel Aviv. On one occasion, Maguire was forced to land his aircraft in Egypt when it ran out of gas. The Israelis had warned all pilots that if they had to land in Arab territory, the Jewish refugees and perhaps even the crew would likely be shot. The quick-witted Maguire told airport officials he needed ambulances to take his passengers to hospital. When they asked why, he replied that his passengers had smallpox. The frightened Egyptians wanted him out of there right away. Maguire received his fuel and flew on to Tel Aviv. Part way through the operation, the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board forced Alaska Airlines to shut down its international charter business and a company called Near East Air Transport, whose president was James Wooten and whose pilots, and aircraft were all Alaska Air’s, completed the Operation Magic Carpet airlift. Near East Air Transport was just Alaska Airlines operating under another name. By the time Operation Magic Carpet ended in September 1950, 28 Alaska Airlines pilots had made some 380 flights and airlifted 48,818 refugees, almost Yemen’s entire Jewish population, to Israel. Miraculously not one death or injury occurred. Operation Magic Carpet was kept secret for reasons of security and to prevent sabotage. It would be many months later before the public or the press would become aware of the remarkable operation. Today, Alaska Airlines is an international carrier serving 60 cities and 3 countries. pring is finally here. No more coats boots and winter gear. The fresh air and warmer weather beacons us outside. The markets are abuzz with luscious green vegetables that are great for our health and help us keep cool during this time of year. Choosing to rely on nature’s bounty for the majority of our meals, will automatically help you cleanse from the heavy winter months foods and especially from the overload of potatoes and eggs on Pesach. As we usher in spring, we surely would benefit more from the new growth of this season’s fresh produce such as tender, leafy vegetables, mixed in fresh salads and raw grated vegetables. Be creative and experiment with Swiss chard, dandelion greens, spinach, Romaine lettuce, fresh parsley and basil; each of these vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals that can protect our bodies from ailments. 42
In summer, as the weather turns warm it is recommended that we consume lighter meals, and cooling foods. The produce department of most supermarkets will be chock full of berries like strawberries, blueberries, and other fruits such as watermelons, cantaloupes, apples, pears, plums, nectarines and peaches that will delight young and old. Vegetables like summer squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and corn as well as cooling spices and seasonings like peppermint, mint and cilantro. The Rambam (Maimonides) in his day advocated eating fruits and vegetables that were in season, ripened naturally, and locally grown, as he avers that unripe produce are like daggers to the body. (Code of Jewish law 32) Enjoy nature’s bountiful offering for this glorious time of year. Enjoy this season!

Snow Pea, Scallion and Radish Salad Enjoy this simple-to-make salad, when snow peas are at the peak of their sweetness. Low in calories and high in nutrients, snow peas and radishes provide a satisfying crunch—add your favorite protein to this dish such as broiled fish, chicken, or chickpeas with some Hummus and serve over your favorite salad for a delightful all in one meal Ingredients 2 cups (8 ounces) snow peas, trimmed 2 scallions (white and green parts), thinly sliced 4 radishes, trimmed and cut into thin strips (about ½ cup) 1 head Romaine lettuce or 1 head Bok Choy ½ cup rice vinegar or lemon juice
1 tsp sugar 1 Tbs walnut or canola oil Directions Wash snow peas well. Cut off ends of snow peas and toss into a bowl. Cut the snow peas to desired size or leave whole. In a medium serving bowl, combine the snow peas, scallions, and radishes. In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar, sugar, and oil until the sugar dissolves. Pour over the salad and serve. Preparation 10 minutes Serves 4

Spring Beet Salad Beets are known for their therapeutic effect on the liver, as well as being hailed as blood builders. Beets are rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and other vitamins They are very low in calories Beetroot can be consumed in various forms. Raw grated into salads or added as an ingredient to soups, stews, mixed with horseradish and pickled and also used as a natural coloring agent. I often include one small beet into my apple compote to give it a nice reddish hue. Even though beets are available throughout the year they are the first to appear in the spring. Ingredients 2 medium beets cooked until tender
1 red pepper cut into strips 1 yellow pepper cut into strips 1 small red onion cut into circles 1 large raw carrot cut into rounds Lemon dressing ½ lemon juiced ½ tsp salt 2 Tbs water 2 Tbs olive oil Directions In a salad bowl mix all ingredients and coat with a lemon dressing. Preparation 10 minutes Serves 4- 6

Asian Chicken Salad This is literally the most delicious way to have a salad for dinner. INGREDIENTS 1/3 cup rice vinegar 1/3 cup vegetable oil Kosher salt 1 ginger, peeled and cut into slices against the grain (optional) 2 scallions, chopped, plus more for garnish 1 1/2 lb. boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1/2� cubes 1 cup matchstick carrots 1 seedless cucumber, cut into ribbons with peeler 1 yellow bell pepper, cut into matchsticks 6 Romaine leaves, or other favorite greens shredded DIRECTIONS
Make a marinade by combining rice vinegar, vegetable oil, 1 tsp salt, and ginger in a blender. Start on low and increase speed until well blended. Add scallions and stir with a spoon. Pour half of the marinade into a medium mixing bowl and the balance into a small jar. Set aside. Add chicken to the mixing bowl and marinate in dressing for 20 minutes. In a large skillet over medium heat, add chicken and marinade. Stir occasionally until chicken is cooked through, 10 minutes. Toss carrots, cucumbers, bell pepper, and romaine in a large serving bowl. Top with warm chicken and sauce, garnish with scallions, and serve with additional dressing. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 4

Oriental Slaw Delightful served as an entrĂŠe, as a side dish, or in a whole wheat pita pocket. Ingredients 1 small head of Napa (also known as Chinese cabbage) 1 small purple cabbage, washed and thoroughly checked 1 large carrot, shredded 1 red pepper cut in thin strips. 1 small red onion, finely chopped 46
1/2 cup dressing (homemade mayonnaise, tahini, Italian, or dill) Directions Cut Napa lettuce into ½ inch strips. Cut the cabbage into thin strips. Combine the Napa, cabbage, carrot and onion. Add the dressing. Toss gently until all the vegetables are well coated. Preparation time: 10 minutes Serves 6

Guacamole Dip (Avocado based) This dip takes minutes to make and can be enjoyed anytime as a snack over crackers or as a dressing over salad. Enhance your Sholosh seudos by serving this dip in a scooped out red pepper, if you are feeding a larger crowd you can scoop out and stuff a small red cabbage that will make a beautiful center piece. Ingredients 2 ripe firm avocadoes ½ onion ½ hot pepper (optional) 1 tomato ½ juice of a lime 1/3 cup homemade mayonnaise Salt and crushed garlic to taste Directions Blend all ingredients in food processor with an all purpose blade for 60 seconds. Guacamole can be served as a delicious dip for any party. It is sure to get compliments. Preparation: 15 minutes

Pasta Primavera This a delicious meal all in one that takes advantage of fresh spring produce. Great served hot or cold. Ingredients ½ package whole-grain pasta (There are many varieties in the health food store: buckwheat, whole wheat, spelt, brown rice, corn) 1 medium onion, cut in strips 2 cloves garlic 2 Tbs Tamari sauce 1 red pepper, cubed 1 yellow pepper, cubed 4 leaves Napa lettuce, or Chinese lettuce, or bok choy 1 large carrot, sliced in matchsticks 2 sliced celery ½ lb mushrooms, thinly sliced

4 oz. crumbled goat feta cheese Directions Steam fry onions and garlic in water for 5 minutes. Stir in the Tamari sauce. Add remaining vegetables, except for the mushrooms. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook for another 5 minutes until mushrooms are tender Prepare noodles according to package directions. Once noodles are cooked, mix with the vegetables. Preparation: 30 minutes Serves 8
