s a self-proclaimed shopoholic, I can attest to the fact that there are two types of stores we women frequent. There are the retail outlets we visit out of necessity (think dry goods, groceries and pharmaceuticals), and there are the ones we visit entirely for pleasure. The latter include purveyors of jewelry, shoes, gifts, furniture and tableware. These stores appeal to our inherent love of all things beautiful, and we browse through their selections of merchandise over and over again, hoping to own just a small fraction of that beauty. Elbat – the word ‘Table’ spelled backwards - is just such a place. Their show-stopping showroom is a feast for the senses. Even when there’s nothing new that I need, per se, to enhance my living space, I still enjoy stopping in there every so often MXVW WR UXQ P\ Ă€QJHUWLSV DFURVV WKHLU

sure a room is consonant in color and fashion. You can’t just throw things together haphazardly, or the room will not harmonize. It’s like an orchestra in which the LQVWUXPHQWV DOO SOD\ GLIIHUHQW WXQHV DW WKH VDPH WLPH -XVW like that wouldn’t be pleasing to the ear, a mismatched room isn’t pleasing to the eye. So in a decorative sense, Hadassah is a master conductor. She’s the go-to person for turning a dream home into a dazzling reality, even for those who have no idea where to start. With an exceptional eye for artistic arrangement, she can pinpoint exactly what needs to be done to turn a simple space, into a resplendent room. Often all it takes for a great transformation are a few minor changes in fabrics or window treatments, or a few small furniture accents to make a dull setting come to life. One’s home should be a place where beauty and kick-your-shoes-off coziness equally envelop every member of the family. One’s table should be a place where the serving of great food is enhanced by the striking elegance of exceptional dinnerware. If you can close your eyes and dream of that beautiful home, or that tempting table, Elbat can help you create it.

HOW TO PLAY

The objective of sudoku is to enter a digit from 1 through 9 in each cell, in such a way that: Each horizontal row contains each digit exactly once Each vertical column contains each digit exactly once Each subgrid or region contains each digit exactly once

The puzzler’s job is to fill the remainder of the grid with digits –respecting, of course, the three constraints mentioned earlier.

HARD

In each sudoku puzzle, several digits have already been entered (the “givens”); these may not be changed.

Winter Blues SAD

re the gray skies of winter making you feel blue? Do you feel tired, like you lost your spark, need extra sleep, and can’t get control of your appetite? If you nod in agreement to these questions, you may be one of the millions of people affected by SAD (seasonal affective disorder) also known as the “winter blues. Experts who study the winter blahs now acknowledge that you can blame much of winter’s crankiness, moodiness, and restlessness on short, cloudy days and a lack of sunlight. Low levels of sunlight trigger changes in hormones, increasing levels of melatonin (a hormone that normally helps you go to sleep) and decreasing serotonin ( a hormone that improves mood). For many people, this hormonal tumult translates into a craving for sugary foods and a need for more sleep. $OWKRXJK WKH H[DFW FDXVH RI 6$' is not known, researchers believe the pineal gland plays an important role in this disorder. This gland, located beneath the brain, makes melatonin in response to the amount of light that enters your eyes. Melatonin hormone is only produced in darkness. The darker your bedroom, the greater your melatonin production. Conversely, melatonin production usually stops in the morning when

you open your eyes to the day’s new light. Roll up those sleeves when you’re outdoors this winter: Curiously enough, studies show that light produces physiological effects by being absorbed through both the eyes and the skin. This synthesis is often impaired in depressed persons, and a lack of adequate B12 may be the culprit.

Vitamin D Need If you suffer from seasonal depression, you may also not be getting enough vitamin D. During the sun-reduced winter months, stores of this fat-soluble vitamin drop, since the skin makes it when exposed to sunlight. When you step out into daylight, the sebaceous glands near the surface of your body produce an oily substance from cholesterol that rises to the skin’s surface. Then, ultraviolet B rays from the sun convert this oily substance (7-dehydrocholesterol) into what is called previtamin D3. Finally, body heat converts previtamin D3 into vitamin D3 (a form of vitamin D). Twenty minutes of daily sunlight exposure on the hands, arms, and face can give adequate amounts of vitamin D to light-skinned people. Dark-skinned people may need longer exposure. Supplements can help: In one study, researchers found WKDW SHRSOH ZKR WRRN YLWDPLQ ' KDG VLJQLÀFDQW LPSURYHPHQW in depression scale scores. $V IDU DV YLWDPLQ ' SURGXFWLRQ JRHV \RX FDQ QHYHU UHFHLYH too much sunlight (although overexposure resulting in a burn is never a good idea). Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Several clinical studies show that omega-3 fatty acids can allay depression and other mood disorders. The brain needs fatty acids to keep cell membranes functioning and nerve calls healthy. Walk Away the Blues Research also shows that exercise can chase away the winter blues and that a little bit of exertion goes a long way. Exercise physiologists at Duke University found that little as eight minutes of physical activity can improve your mood. Exercise stimulates the brain to produce endorphins, feel-good hormones that help reduce pain and depression.

I commute to Yeshiva by car every day, traveling to and from Staten Island, and the ride often takes an hour or more, especially during rush hour. On that particular afternoon, just as I was about to leave yeshiva and head on home, I met a friend I hadn’t seen in years, and we started talking. We spoke to one another animatedly, catching up on everything we’d missed, and enjoying each other’s company. Suddenly, I remembered the time. They were from two different pairs, and, worse still, one was black and the other was brown. It was a very interesting evening, considering the fact that I was afraid to move out of my chair. I couldn’t get up to pay the bill, or use the restroom, or accompany her WR WKH VXVKL EDU 0\ IHHW ZHUH ÀUPO\ stuck underneath the table, and as far as I was concerned, that’s where they’d be staying all night. When it came time to leave, I couldn’t get up to pull the girl’s chair out, or walk ahead of her and hold the door. Instead, feeling like a moron, I waited until she got up and walked out - and I followed her to the car. I was so relieved that she hadn’t QRWLFHG P\ VKRHV DQG ZKHQ , ÀQDOO\ made it home, I was more thankful than anyone can imagine. I’d actually had a pretty good time. The day after we got engaged, she bought me a beautifully gift-wrapped package. I opened it excitedly. Inside, there were two bottles of shoe polish. One was black, the other was brown.

An open letter to the family of an upcoming simcha:

Most of your friends are missing important pictures! My name is David Friedman from )ULHGPDQ¶V 3hotography. I know that the fact above sounds shocking, but after speaking to thousands of people who have had pictures made at their simchas and seeing samples of thousands of simcha photos, I have seen that most simchas miss important pictures. We all know that missing pictures can wreak havoc in Shulem Bayis and ruin the relationship with family PHPEHUV RI ZKRP LPSRUWDQW SLFWXUHV ZHUHQ¶W WDNen and hope that it does not happen to us. After doing extensive research to find out why such important pictures were missing in such a large percentage of weddings I have found that the main reason was that: Nobody took the time to find out what pictures were important to you until after the simcha when it was already too late, and just like everything in life no picture can be taken for granted if it was not discussed. )ULHGPDQ¶V 3hotography, which is the studio I founded Bezras Hashem, has been around doing quality photography since 1988. We have the expertise and knowledge which has been built up by serving the community for close to 30 years, and with this background I personally guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at your simcha. We have used our experience to put together a formula to make sure that every person that hires us will receive 100% full coverage of all their dream pictures at any simcha and to offer our 100% Full coverage guarantee.

100% Full coverage guarantee We guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at the simcha How does it work? After you book )ULHGPDQ¶V SKRWRJUDSK\ for your simcha you will QHHG WR VFKHGXOH RXU XQLTXH ³Discuss Your Dreams´ SUH simcha consultation. We recommend that anyone you want to satisfy with pictures of your simcha should be at the consultation including: Chosen, Kallah, both sets of parents, or bar mitzvah boy & any sibling, grandparent, aunt etc. that you would want to satisfy with the pictures. At the ³Discuss <RXU 'UHDPV´ consultation, you will meet with a photography expert- an expert in what is available in photography- where the photography expert will explain to you what is available based on the plan you chose and what is the most popular while listening to you with the goal of helping you to clarify your dreams, needs, and wants. The photography expert will help you clearly state what you want and that will save you a lot of headaches trying to figure it on your own. You will also be spared the aggravation of not getting the pictures that were important to you when the simcha is over.

At the simcha! All your dream photographs will be taken iy”h.

sent to the Iraqi war zone. “Six months later, they changed the rules,â€? Dr. Horwitz interjected. He was called into headquarters. ´<RX¡UH EHLQJ VHQW WR ,UDT Âľ DQ RIĂ€FHU told him. The chief of medicine was quite upset about Dr. Horwitz’s transfer. Not wanting to lose a staff physician of Dr. Horwitz’s caliber, the chief physician mentioned the issue of religious observance. “Look, it’s hard as an Orthodox Jew. We could get you out of it,â€? he said. But Dr. Horwitz refused to use an excuse – albeit legitimate – to shirk his military responsibilities. As a physician, Dr. Horwitz received the rank of lieutenant colonel. Although ORZHU UDQNLQJ RIĂ€FHUV ZHUH UHTXLUHG WR salute him, a doctor isn’t in the chain of command. Nevertheless, he went to command meetings where he was briefed on evacuation procedures. Casualty evacuation, known as CASEVAC in the U.S. military, always includes two plans – a land route and helicopter plan to quickly evacuate casualties. Evacuation by land requires army engineers to check the road for mines and ensure that army vehicles can travel 80 mph to evacuate

On a stretcher designated for war casualties, Dr. Horwitz placed a napkin over his Lechem Mishnah, and then ate his roll and cold MRE. He sang Menuchah Vesimchah, Tzoma Nafshi and other zemiros. “You can make Shabbos anywhere, he smiles. soldiers.

Keeping Kosher in Battle B l Dr. Horwitz felt it wasn’t honorable to avoid serving abroad. “It’s better for me to go abroad to serve than for someone else with small children; you do the right thing. Dr. Horwitz served with an infantry unit in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation New Dawn in Iraq. As a battalion surgeon, he served for the 5-20 Infantry unit in Iraq, part of the 3-2 Striker brigade. The standard army rations of bacon and eggs are obviously problematic for a frum soldier. Nevertheless, with a little improvisation and planning, a frum soldier can obtain nutritious kosher food. Dr. Horwitz was provided with kosher MREs, ready-to-eat meals that are heated by pouring boiling water onto the packaging. When the unit ran out of the kosher packaged food, Dr. Horwitz would get a few bags of rice and boil water in a container. But getting chalav Yisrael milk was more challenging. “Reb Moshe [Feinstein’s] heter of chalav stam

Missions couldn’t take place during the Superbowl football game, since the American soldiers were glued to the television set.

Shabbos in the Belly of the Beast Spending Shabbos in a war zone was a bit more challenging than keeping kosher. 2 tablespoons snipped fresh chives 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper 1 egg + 1 egg white 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided

LIGHTENED UP POTATO LATKES Potatoes are a nutritious food (fat-free, low in calories, a good source of Vitamin C, an excellent source of potassium, and a source of fiber) and that they stay that way if prepared in healthier ways. With this recipe, you can enjoy this holiday without feeling guilty -- you’ll actually be eating two vegetables: potatoes and carrots. Makes 4 servings. 2 1/2 cups shredded, unpeeled russet potatoes (about 1 lb.) 1/2 cup grated onion 1/3 cup peeled shredded carrot 1/3 cup flour

OLIVE LATKES Recalling both the miracle of the olive oil and the olivepressing season in Israel, these scrumptious olive latkes are a new-fangled way to enjoy a latke. Makes about 8 2 cups finely chopped pitted green or black olives in brine, drained (or use half and half) ½ cup olive oil 1 cup chopped onion 2 Tbsp. chopped garlic 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt

Meanwhile, place the onion, carrot, flour, chives, salt, pepper and eggs in a medium bowl and stir well. Drain the potatoes and squeeze out moisture; stir into egg mixture. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large non stick skillet over medium-high heat until very hot. Spoon about 1/4 cup of potato mixture for each pancake into skillet, cooking 4 at a time. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, flattening with the back of a spatula and cooking until golden brown and crisp on both sides. Drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining oil and potatoes. Serve immediately with chunky applesauce and low-fat sour cream.

1 tsp. cumin 2 eggs, beaten 1-2 Tbsp. water (optional) Chop the olives finely or process in the food processor. Transfer chopped olives to a strainer and squeeze out as much moisture as possible.
