We’re heading into Tishrei, a month filled with inspirational days, days when we expect to be on a spiritual high and to find it easy to connect to Hashem. Some days, b’ezras Hashem, we will feel that sense of connection, and our tefillos will flow smoothly. But some mornings, we might just wake up feeling numb and apathetic, wondering what went wrong. “On a good day, be good; and on a bad day, reflect…” (Koheles 7:14). Shlomo Hamelech, the wisest of all men, tells us that it’s normal to have good as well as bad days, and that there is a way to deal effectively with both of them. In Likutei Moharan (I:33,3) Rebbe Nachman explains this verse as follows: “On a good day” – when everything goes well for you – “be good” – use the goodness to serve Hashem, by learning, davening, performing mitzvos with simchah and hislahavus. But “on a bad day” – when you are on a low level, spiritually or physically – then “reflect” – try to figure out what you can accomplish even in such a situation. Harav Yaakov Meir Shechter shlit”a adds that davka in those times when we feel spiritually weak and frustrated at our inability to serve Hashem properly, it is so important to acknowledge Hashem’s presence in our lives, and to remember that this, too, is from Him. The temptation at such times is to just “let things go” – not to work on our middos, to daven apathetically, to perform mitzvos by rote. But “we must believe that even our ‘bad days’ are from Hashem, and they are intended for our good. By serving Hashem even when we are on a low level, even when we are surrounded by difficulties, we accomplish something wonderful, something that could not be accomplished any other way. The important thing is to pray to Hashem, to plead with Him to be with us and to give us the strength to serve Him properly… “In this way, we reveal the light within the darkness,” he explains. And we know that even a tiny spark of light can drive away much darkness. May we all be zocheh, very soon, to see the ultimate driving away of darkness and the Geulah Sheleimah, b’rachamim merubim, Amen. A kesivah and chasimah tovah and a gut gebentsht yohr,

Torah Is Not Easily Acquired

A

s a young , Harav Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor ztz”l was known as a weak student who found it hard to grasp new ideas, remember material, and concentrate on his learning. However, he did have one excellent quality: a burning desire to learn Torah, despite all his inborn impediments. And so it was that as a bachur, he began to dedicate himself whole-heartedly to learning, spurred on by his father’s declaration that if he continued to fail to show any promise, he would be apprenticed, effectively spelling the end to any dreams of a life of limmud haTorah. With great hasmadah, an iron will, and a desperate desire to succeed despite everything, the young Yitzchak Elchanan soared in learning beyond the wildest expectations of all who knew him – himself included. By the time he was twenty years of age, he had been appointed as rav of the town of Zoblin, and in 5624, after having served as rav in several other towns, he was chosen as rav in the great city of Kovno. There he established a yeshivah and continued to enlighten the eyes of Jews all over Russia, serving as an inspiration to all those who had come close to despairing over their own abilities to shteig in Torah.

Even in his later years, he was known for his great hasmadah, learning for long hours at a stretch, often for entire nights, banishing sleep from his eyelids and forging forwards, ever forwards in the great Yam haTalmud. On one occasion, he was questioned regarding his practice of sleeping little – for had

not the Rambam stated that a person should sleep for eight hours a night? “That is true,” admitted Harav Yitzchak Elchanan, adding “and I myself was very troubled by this question. In fact, I devoted entire nights to understanding the intent and meaning of this Rambam, without success…”

*************** One afternoon, the weather was particularly warm, and Harav Yitzchak Elchanan was sitting outside his home in the yard, trying to catch a little breeze to cool him as he learned Gemara with the traditional melody. A tregger (someone whose occupation was carrying loads from one place to another), passed by, and stopped to gaze at the beautiful sight of the town’s rav sitting engrossed in his learning, seemingly without a care in the world. The tregger’s heart was filled with longing, and a deep sigh emitted from his heart. “If only I knew how to learn,” he cried out loud. “Then I too could sit peacefully in my little yard, swaying over a sefer – instead of which, just look at me! Sweat pouring down my face, my clothes sticking to me under this sweltering sun as I run to and fro, to this customer and that one, hauling burdens meant more for horses than for men. And at the end of the day, what do I have to show for all my efforts? Just a piece of dark bread with something to brighten it up, and the pinched faces of my children to stare at me. Oyy – such a bitter lot is mine.” Harav Yitzchak Elchanan listened intently to the tregger’s

outburst and the words pierced his soul. Nonetheless, he knew that matters were far from being as simple as the tregger believed – didn’t he himself know that from his very own experience? He stood up and went over to where the man was standing, having temporarily removed the yoke from his shoulders, and smiled at him affectionately. “Tell me, Reb Yid,” he addressed him, “do you really think it is such a simple matter to sit and learn all day?” The tregger looked up in surprise and awe. The great rav was speaking to him! “Well, yes – it does indeed seem a very pleasant way of life,” he replied. “Yes, yes – it truly is a beautiful way of life,” Harav Yitzchak Elchanan hurried to confirm. “And yet, it does say that ‘kol hascholos kashos’ – all beginnings are difficult. And in truth, our mitzvah is yegias haTorah – to be struggling in learning. It is not always so easy to dedicate oneself whole-heartedly to learning, banishing all distractions, of which there are plenty.” The tregger was not one to be so easily convinced. “If the Rav will permit me to disagree,” he began respectfully, “but just look at me! The sun is still high in the sky and I have so many hours of work ahead of me – and today is so hot! And what’s more, I am no longer as young as I once was, and although I really need to increase my earnings, the opposite is happening, as I don’t have the strength I once had, so I can’t take on as many customers... How can one

compare a person who sits peacefully with a sefer, to one who has to run all over town like a pack donkey in order to earn his daily crust of bread?” Harav Yitzchak Elchanan patted the man affectionately on the back. “Please, come inside for a moment and refresh yourself with a cool glass of water,” he invited. “And also, if you don’t mind, would you tell me how much you earn each day?” The tregger sat down gratefully and accepted the drink. “Just twenty zehuvim,” he grumbled. “In the old days, I earned as much as thirty, but now,” he sighed, “that’s the way it is.” “In that case,” Harav Yitzchak Elchanan said, “I have a proposition for you. I will give you twenty zehuvim each day, and you will sit at home, peacefully, as you say, contentedly and happily, and say Tehillim. That is also a very choshuve occupation for one who cannot learn Gemara – you need not feel inferior.” The tregger looked up in surprise. “That is a very interesting plan,” he admitted. “You know, I had never thought of such a thing – I would love to give it a try.” And so it was, that the next morning, the tregger returned from shul and told his bemused wife that from now on, he had a new occupation – he had become a Tehillim-zogger. And before she had a chance to open her mouth and protest that there was no income from such an occupation, however worthy it might be, he explained that the rav of the town, Harav Yitzchak Elchanan, had guaranteed him his twenty zehuvim, if he kept to his part of the deal. “And I will be just like the rav – on my own level,” he told her excitedly. “The rav told me that it

is nothing to be ashamed of, that I cannot learn Gemara as he does. This is also a very choshuve thing to be doing.” And then he settled himself at the table with his Tehillim in hand, and began to sway over the yellowed pages, singing the words to himself and drifting into a sweet state of peaceful relaxation, such as he hardly recalled ever having experienced. The hours passed blissfully, engrossed as he was in his recitation, barely aware of his surroundings, himself surprised at his ability to sit in one place for so long. He took just a half hour from his recital to eat the midday meal, as he was accustomed, with his wife, and then returned to his perch, to continue until the sun began to dip towards the horizon and it was time to head to shul for Minchah. At the end of the day, he felt a sense of great purpose and achievement, as well as enhanced self-esteem, for now he too numbered among those who dedicated all their waking hours to Torah. How fortunate he was! The next morning, he rose bright and early to daven with his regular minyan, and then returned home to settle himself comfortably with his Tehillim. As he watched his once-fellow workers hurrying away to their chores, he smiled with satisfaction, and pitied them for their lot. Baruch Hashem, he had finally extricated himself from that fate! The hours passed pleasantly at first, but by the end of the third hour, he was glancing a little impatiently out of the window, wondering when the sun would climb to its peak and his wife would serve him his meal. Today, he lingered a little longer over his

potatoes and beans, and his wife looked up at him in surprise. “Don’t you have to get back to ‘work’ yet?” she chided him gently. “Hmm – yes, I suppose so,” he replied thoughtfully, pushing away his empty plate and getting to his feet. Suddenly the fresh air beyond the window seemed more enticing than usual, and his legs seemed to be itching to tread the grassy paths between the houses, even though his shoulders were certainly still glad not to be carrying their cumbersome yoke. As he resumed his Tehillimzoggen, he cast longing glances out of the window, and soon found his thoughts wandering all over, far beyond the holy words his mouth was uttering. When would it be time for Minchah already? Perhaps he would go a little earlier than usual today, and sit in shul and ready his thoughts for prayer for a few minutes? Deep in his heart, he knew what was happening, and though he was reluctant to admit it, it was clear that he could not carry on for much

longer in this manner. “I don’t know what to do,” he confided in a friend after Maariv. “It all seemed so idyllic at first…” The friend smiled. “Why don’t you go back to the rav, and tell him about your dilemma?” he suggested, and the former tregger agreed that this was what he would do, and without delay. Instead of making his way home to bed, he headed for the rav’s home, and knocked, somewhat nervously, at the door. On the one hand, he felt something of a failure – but nonetheless, he longed to free himself of the yoke he had taken on for a meager two days – was that really all he had managed? He sighed despondently. Maybe Hashem just wanted him to remain a humble tregger after all, and to be happy with his lot. Harav Yitzchak Elchanan opened the door and warmly welcomed his guest. As he listened to the tregger’s story, he nodded sympathetically. “Do not feel so downhearted,” he comforted him. “Now you have been granted a new perspective. I too

experienced great difficulty during the first years of dedicating myself to Torah, and many a time I would say kapitel after kapitel of Tehillim, begging the Eibeshter to open my eyes that I might understand a particular passage in Gemara. Nobody has an easy lot in life…” *************** Another simple villager lived in the same town as the tregger – but this villager had inherited great wealth and land holdings, and found himself in a very enviable position, except in the one aspect that he was and remained a total am ha’aretz, unlearned and unable to recognize greatness in learning. This villager had several sons and an only daughter, and when this daughter became of marriageable age, he resolved that with the advantage of his relatively great wealth, he would obtain for her the finest bachur that money could buy. Although he was an ignoramus, there was one thing he did know, and that was

that the highest accolade for a talmid chacham was to be baki b’Shas – to be fluent in all of Gemara. And so, with this in mind, he saddled his horse and set off for the local yeshivah, to begin his quest for the perfect chassan for his daughter. “The very best,” he emphasized to the rosh yeshivah, who gave him a warm welcome. “I am ready to provide him with kest, full support, for my entire lifetime, as well as a handsome dowry – in short, everything he needs. He will have no excuse for idling away his time!” The rosh yeshivah was delighted. One of his beloved bachurim would have an amazing opportunity! And although ideally one should seek a wife who is the daughter of a talmid chacham, in that day and age, that usually meant a life of great poverty and deprivation, in addition to having to leave the world of learning almost immediately after marriage, in order to earn a living. And surely the fact that this simple villager desired a choshuve son-in-law was a sign that he at least appreciated Torah… Whispering excitedly to his guest, the rosh yeshivah pointed to the far corner of the beis medrash, indicating a bachur hunched over his sefer. “That is Mendel, one of my top bachurim. He is fluent in the entire Shas, just as you specified. Truly a prize – you will never regret taking him.” The villager followed the rosh yeshivah’s gaze and examined the bachur from the distance. He did not like what he saw, and he did not hesitate in saying so. “Such a scrawny bachur! So thin and weak-looking! It doesn’t look like he knows how to eat at all, so what would he gain from my kest? No – that is certainly not what I had in mind. Don’t you have anyone better to show me?” The rosh yeshivah was astonished, and then stifled a smile. An am ha’aretz despite his wealth – he had a better idea for this simple man. “I’m so sorry – I should have

realized. Here – look over there, that is Yankel, another of our top bachurim. As you will notice, he is a tall, broad-shouldered bachur, and he will truly appreciate the good food you would like to give him. I’m sure you will be happy with him.” The villager seemed satisfied. “Yes, he looks more like what I was looking for.” The shidduch proceeded smoothly, and the chasunah took place amid great rejoicing. Everything seemed in order, except for one fact the rosh yeshivah had omitted to reveal, for his own good reasons: the chassan was not in fact baki in the entire

Such a scrawny bachur! So thin and weak-looking! It doesn’t look like he knows how to eat at all Shas, but only in a few masechtas... But given that the father-in-law was hardly likely to notice this, or even appreciate its full significance, the rosh yeshivah was convinced that he had taken the correct course of action. Most probably, this fact would indeed have gone undetected, especially as the villager was extremely happy with his new sonin-law, who had fine middos despite his relative lack of scholarship. However, when the father-in-law kept boasting of his fine catch, the jealousy of his friends was aroused,

14 Bringing you the Buzz on Savings & Events I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

and they decided to try and find some defect in the new chassan, some way of consoling themselves that they had not merited such a fine catch. Unfortunately for the villager, it did not take too long for them to discover that the chassan was not all that had been claimed… The villager was devastated. He had been tricked! But what could he do now? His daughter was happy with her husband, and refused to consider sending him away. Confused and disappointed, the villager made his way to the home of the town’s rav, Harav Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor, and laid out his grievances. The rav was unfazed, and calmly asked his gabbai to summon the chassan. When he arrived, he asked him if he was willing to undertake to learn all of Mishnah within a few years, and the chassan agreed. Then, turning to the fatherin-law, Harav Yitzchak Elchanan reassured him that within a few years time, his son-in-law would indeed be a baki b’Shas, and he could still hold his head up high among his friends and neighbors. But the villager was adamant: He had ordered a bachur baki b’Shas and he wanted one – guaranteed! The rav smiled at him. “You would like a guarantee? No problem! I myself will be the guarantor that your fine son-in-law will indeed become baki b’Shas.” The villager sighed with relief. “Thank you so much! I knew that there had to be a solution!” And he and his chassan departed happily. A talmid of Harav Yitzchak Elchanan, who had been present during the exchange, then turned to the rav with a question: How was it possible to guarantee such a thing? “It is really no problem at all,” Harav Yitzchak Elchanan explained. “Just as a debtor who finds himself unable to repay his creditor turns to his guarantor to come up with the sum required, so too will I, if necessary, supply the ‘goods’…”

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

Learning Enhancers By Chana Mendelowitz

A

fter the summer break, it takes time to get back into routine. For weeks at a stretch, many of us have been allowing our brains to “relax” – which makes the transition into the new school year a challenge for even the most academically inclined. Some of us have trouble concentrating and retaining material even at the best of times, for a wide variety of reasons. But don’t despair! Brain trouble has been around for as long as the brain itself, and as usual, the refuah has preceded the makkah. Herbal learning enhancers abound in nature and they are virtually free of the nasty side effects that are part and parcel of taking pharmaceutical drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. As with any other health issue, herbs are only one prong of the holistic approach that should be adopted to deal with the problem at hand. Getting enough sleep is essential, as is proper nutrition. What a shame to see mothers buying expensive vitamin supplements, only to effectively neutralize their effect when they can’t resist “dosing” their children simultaneously with sugar and refined flour products. Sufficient B vitamins in the diet is also of paramount importance; too little of the B vitamins and energy

levels will drop, concentration will be poor, and nervous fidgeting and stress increase. Sugar overload is a culprit here, too, as too much sugar dilutes the impact of B vitamins in the body. But if you’ve already taken care of the basics, and things still aren’t as good as they could be, try some of the following time-tested herbs. Be patient; unlike with pharmaceutical drugs, you won’t usually see immediate improvements, but nonetheless, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised at how mere “vegetables” can enhance your brain power. Rosemary If you were thinking that you surely need something expensive and exotic to deal with an organ as sophisticated as the brain, then think again. Rosemary has a track record going back thousands of years in treating all manner of brain issues ranging from forgetfulness, poor concentration, absent-mindedness, and the common headache. In the days of the ancient Roman Empire, students used to braid sprigs of the fresh herb into their hair during examinations, in order to remain alert and focused. Luckily, there are other, less

conspicuous ways to reap the benefits of this fragrant herb: Tea: Take 1 ½ tablespoons of dried rosemary, or a 1 to 2 inch piece of the fresh herb, and simmer in 8 oz water for five minutes. You can also pour boiling water over the herb in a mug, and let it steep, covered, for five minutes, if you prefer, although the resulting tea will not be as strong. You can drink this tea regularly, and especially before examinations or at other stressful occasions. There is some evidence that rosemary has an anti-Alzheimer’s effect, making it a good idea for older people to drink this tea on a regular basis. As an added bonus, rosemary boosts the immune system, making you less susceptible to cold viruses and the like. Tincture: Take a small jar and fill it half-way with dried rosemary, or entirely fill it with the fresh herb. Add vodka, 80 proof (100 is better if you can get hold of it) to fill the jar. Shake the jar daily for the first week, and then let sit for another five weeks. The liquid will turn a vivid green color. Strain the herb out and store. A daily dose would be a teaspoon-full. Sage Sage can be used in place of

rosemary if you prefer the taste and aroma. Sage tea is also an astringent, making it an excellent choice if you are trying to shake off a cold and need to clear out your nasal passages and sinuses. Its generally drying properties are also helpful if you’re the kind of person who sweats a lot when nervous, as it reduces perspiration. But because it works so well, it’s not advisable to drink sage tea for more than a few days at a time. Sage and rosemary both seem to work on the brain by protecting acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain responsible for thinking, learning, and retaining knowledge. Gotu Kola Gotu kola is a well-known herb used to stimulate brain functioning. It is renowned as a memory enhancer and is also effective in combating anxiety and depression. It improves blood circulation and will help you concentrate and focus intently for longer spans of time. Gotu kola can be taken in capsule form; recommended dose is between 1000 and 2000mg, twice a day. If you take it long-term, alternate six weeks on with two weeks off, so that your body won’t become too accustomed to it, reducing its effectiveness. Ashwaganda and Brahmi These are both Ayurvedic herbs with a long history of use as brain enhancers. Both are memory boosters and enhance mental clarity and blood circulation, including to the brain. Both fight anxiety, stress, and depression, all of which can conspire to destroy your powers of concentration. A daily dose of Brahmi is between 100 and 200mg. With Ashwaganda, take a 500mg capsule 2-3 times a day. Korean/Panax Ginseng Not to be confused with Siberian or American ginseng. Korean ginseng is what’s known as an adaptogen, which means that it helps your body to adapt to environmental stressors. As with the other herbs listed here, ginseng

NEWS & ANALYSIS

Hiroshima & Nagasaki Still Controversial Recent comments by a public relations official in the Israeli government have been criticized as “unacceptable” and the official in question has allegedly been suspended. Danny Seaman, who posted the comments on his Facebook page, wrote that he was “sick” of “self-righteous” Japanese and international commemorations of the atom bomb victims, and that those who died were victims of Japanese aggression. Taken at face value, there does seem to be some merit to his argument; after all, Japan entered the war via an act of unprovoked war against the United States. It is also widely accepted that Japan would have continued to fight regardless of facing certain defeat, owing to an extreme cultural prejudice against surrendering. Continuing the war would have almost certainly meant vast loss of life on both sides. It is the ethical argument,

however, that seems to hold sway in many circles – is it really possible to justify such a mass attack against civilians? Interestingly, the Japanese themselves would possibly answer that question with a resounding, “Yes.” Today, almost 70 years after the end of the war, new evidence is still surfacing regarding wartime events. In Japan, attention is being focused on atrocities committed not by the enemy but by the Japanese themselves, particularly those who were members of army Unit 731. The “doctors” attached to that unit regularly performed horrific surgery on helpless civilians or POWs, all in the name of science, much as Nazi Germany did during the same time period. Japan was then planning attacks of bubonic plague, anthrax, cholera, and other pathogens, to be used against America and other enemies, primarily China. One plan, codenamed “Cherry Blossoms,” from the summer of 1945, involved using kamikaze pilots to dump plagueinfected fleas in California. Military doctors tested deadly

substances on live, unanaesthetized subjects, claiming that use of anesthetic would distort the results. Most of the details of the operations performed are too gruesome to describe here. Historians and former members of Unit 731 say that at least 3,000 people, and possibly many times that amount, were killed in the experiments. There were no survivors. Germ warfare was also tested outside the laboratory; planes dropped plague-infected fleas over several regions of China, and it is estimated that more than 200,000 Chinese died as a result. Another similarity to Nazi Germany was the attitude of the Allied victors towards the doctors; the United States Army granted immunity from war crimes prosecution to the doctors, in exchange for their data, and helped them to cover up the evidence. Much of the data was considered valuable for combating various diseases and conditions, such as frostbite – in this case, prisoners, including newborn babies, were subjected to freezing conditions until

POWs were taken by the Japanese. These were forcibly marched to a distant army camp, and the sick and wounded, who could not keep up, were summarily executed. 16,000 POWs died along the way, and the conditions in the camp were so bad that another 40,000 died over the next nine months. After the Japanese surrender, the remaining POWs were finally released. A full 37% had died in captivity. For westerners, the rate was 27% - for Chinese, the rate was much higher, and only 56 survived their experiences.

national headlines when police in North Carolina threatened to arrest their members if they continued to distribute biscuits and hot coffee to local homeless people, as they have been doing for the past few years.

One member was present at the attempted distribution, and later described the events. “We asked the officers for permission to disperse the biscuits to the over 70 people who had lined up, waiting to eat [what would have been breakfast for them]. They said no. I had to face those who were waiting and tell them that I could not feed them, or I would be arrested.” Closer to home, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration has banned citizens from donating food directly to homeless shelters. There are similar laws on the books in Florida, Atlanta, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami, and more than 50 other cities. Some claim that the laws protect law-abiding citizens from the homeless, who could be housed in homeless shelters but prefer to stay on the streets where they have access to alcohol and drugs. Others claim that this new trend is just one step further away from America’s ethical foundational principles, and still others suggest that the USA was founded on the basis of “each man to his own” and that this latest development is simply one of the logical outcomes. However, with the

Unfortunately, many if not all of the recipients of Clement’s largesse are unaware of the true nature of their benefactors and do not recognize such gestures for what they are. And those ways were word, deed, and sign. Now the Embassy [the organization of which he is a member] has been second to none in the deeds. The welfare, the care for people, the programs that you’ve seen are second to none. I don’t believe the Embassy should now go straight into word. One such organization is Shalva: The Association for Mentally and Physically Challenged Children, based in Yerushalayim. Clement is far from being the only missionary who has successfully

A recent study featured in the Journal of Personality strongly suggests that self-discipline leads to greater levels of life satisfaction. Through a series of tests — including one that assessed 414 middle-aged participants on selfcontrol and asked them about their life satisfaction both currently and in the past — and another that randomly queried volunteers about their mood and any desires they might be experiencing, the researchers found a strong correlation between higher levels of self-control and life satisfaction. The authors write that “feeling good rather than bad may be a core benefit of having good selfcontrol, and being well satisfied with life is an important consequence.” The experiment also revealed how self-control may improve mood. here are some stores that women frequent out of necessity, like the dry goods store, the grocery or the fish market. There are other retail outlets we visit just for fun, like clothing boutiques, shoe stores or furniture shops. And then, there is one store we women meander through repeatedly, for the sheer sensual pleasure of the experience – Jewelry Planet. I’ll admit I suffer from a diamond addiction: I can’t help browsing at Jewelry Planet. It’s not even like I need any new jewelry, per se. In fact, I’m pretty sure my husband would have a conniption if I even subtly suggested the need for another necklace. And yet, I can’t seem to resist the lure of this shop’s luxuriant charms. As

women, Jewelry Planet is a place that just appeals to our inherent love of all things beautiful, and we peruse their impressive selection of gems with the hope and the yearning to own just a small fraction of that beauty. Their elegantly stocked showroom is a brilliant feast for the senses. So though I may already have more rings than fingers, I still enjoy stopping in there every so often just to try on their exquisite merchandise - and more often than not, I’m tempted to make a totally unnecessary but totally irresistible purchase. Almost inevitably, I end up falling in love with some eye-catching object de’ art; some absolute ‘must-have’ that I most happily wear home.

Jewelry Planet is the Flatbush equivalent of Lakewood’s Ram Jewelers – an establishment that proudly boasts ten years in business, and ten years of exceptional customer service. While Jewelry Planet is open just over a year, Mr. and Mrs. Mansour run both locations and are experienced Jewelry professionals in every sense of the term. There’s no longer any need to trek all the way to Lakewood, Williamsburg or Boro Park to find that uniquely stunning assortment of jewels. Right in the heart of Avenue M, Jewelry Planet is making women sigh and swoon in delight. If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, Jewelry Planet is a girl’s Garden of Eden. In the store’s no-pressure, allpleasure environment, customers are encouraged to take their time and make their selections according to price, preference or predilection. They carry designs to suit every taste from classic to contemporary, timeless to trendy.

The proprietors at Jewelry Planet specialize in kallah packages, so clients can feel confident knowing they got the best deal in town for their special simcha. For example, mechutanim who purchase a bracelet, diamond ring and setting at Jewelry Planet can enjoy a free strand

of pearls, on the house! They have a whole array of chasson watches to choose from as well, so every ‘top bochur in yeshiva’ can get the topnotch timepiece he deserves. At Jewelry Planet, you aren’t limited to just the stock that meets your eye. They’re happy to customize any piece of jewelry to your personal

specifications. Whether you’re looking for a particular casting or an exclusive setting, they can create the perfect mold in your singular design. If you’re hesitant to travel with genuine jewelry, or if you just want to treat yourself to something lovely but less prohibitive, Jewelry Planet also has a line of high-end costume designs that will take your breath away. Is your birthday or anniversary imminently approaching? Are you dreaming of that perfect Yom Tov gift? Send your husband out to the one place in Brooklyn that’s got what you really want! It’s no wonder that Jewelry Planet is visited, more often than not, by repeat customers or those who have been referred by raving word of mouth. Like me, these women keep coming back to Jewelry Planet for the outstanding service, the unparalleled quality, and the sheer sensual pleasure of the experience.

self-control reported more good moods and fewer bad ones. But this didn’t appear to be linked to being more able to resist temptations — rather, it was because they exposed themselves to fewer situations that might evoke craving in the first place. They were, in essence, setting themselves up to be happy. “People who have good selfcontrol do a number of things that bring them happiness — namely, they avoid problematic desires and conflict,” says the study’s coauthor Kathleen Vohs, professor of marketing at the University of Minnesota. More than 230 participants were asked to list three important goal conflicts they experienced regularly — and then to rate how strongly the goals conflicted and how frequently they experienced the conflict. They were also queried on how they managed to balance the goals. The highly self-controlled showed a distinct difference from those with less discipline over their lives. They tended to avoid creating situations in which their goals would conflict, and reported fewer instances of having to choose between short-term pleasure and long-term pain. The result? They experienced fewer negative emotions. The authors write that “one interpretation of this finding is that people use self-control to set up their lives so as to avoid problems.” “From other research, we know that exercising self-control is taxing,” says Smith-Crowe, but that may only be a perception, since it results from our tendency to focus on the difficulty of exercising discipline rather than the benefits that result when we do.

PERSPECTIVES – THE SECOND LOOK

Rosh Hashanah What’s New? “Hamelech…”

For many of us, this is the highlight of Rosh Hashanah davening. After all, how many times do we proclaim Hashem as king on a regular day? Oh, only about a hundred… Every brachah we make includes the phrase “melech ha’olam,” and even the dramatic “Hamelech” is a regular feature in Shacharis on Shabbos, right after Nishmas. What makes Rosh Hashanah different? *************** Chazal teach us that Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of the world, or rather, of the creation of man, the pinnacle of creation. However, we refer to Hashem as being “mechadesh kol yom tamid ma’aseh bereishis” – renewing creation every single day. Is there a difference between this renewal and the renewal that takes place only once a year? Answering this question, the Ari Hakadosh writes that Rosh Hashanah is literally a reversion to the situation that prevailed towards the end of the first week of the world, right before Adam and Chava

were divided into two from one body. The Zohar Hakadosh explains that Rosh Hashanah is a time of din, of great judgment, when the Ribbono shel Olam weighs the very existence of the universe. Should creation be renewed for another year, or should everything revert to tohu v’vohu – total oblivion? It all depends on us. Just as the original creation depended on the Jewish People’s future acceptance of Torah and ol malchus Shamayim (the yoke of Heaven), so too does the renewal of the world on Rosh Hashanah hinge on our decision to accept Hashem’s kingship over us. But if so, then why do we so intently focus on teshuvah in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah? What do our past sins have to do with accepting Hashem as King in the future? In the business world, there is a concept known as “rising to the level of one’s incompetency.” In general, a person starts out on the bottom rung of a company, and works his way up the ranks, receiving promotion after promotion. Each time he reaches a new level, he has to figure out how to deal with new responsibilities. Perhaps he became a manager, and will have to learn how to lead a

team of workers. Perhaps he is now expected to work longer hours, or to travel to a more distant office every day. Eventually, however, he will reach a point where he is forced to say, “Enough. I can’t deal with this any more.” Maybe he draws the line at working 70-hour weeks, or maybe he can’t take the long commute any more. But he won’t know that he reached the point of “incompetency” until he reaches it. There is no concept of drawing imaginary lines in the sand and saying lechatchilah that “I can never be a manager. I’m simply not cut out for it.” How can he know, until he tries? This is an appropriate analogy for the way in which we should approach avodas Hashem. Too often, we hear people resigning themselves to the way they are: “That’s just me – I have a short fuse,” or “I could never learn for more than an hour a day,” or “I know that some people don’t think that I’m really within the bounds of tznius, but this is as far as I can go.” How can they be so sure until they try? But wait, some of you will be protesting. Maybe they did try, and didn’t succeed. Does that mean that they can give

up? The answer is, of course, no. Accepting Hashem’s malchus means one crucial thing: That everything is from Him, including the ability to serve Him. If we struggle to serve Hashem with our own abilities, we are sure to fall short. What are we? Divorced from the strength we gain from being connected to Hashem, we are nothing more than empty husks, bodies that begin to rot the moment the neshamah leaves. However, when we recognize that we are nothing without Hashem’s presence in our lives, everything becomes possible. “Pischu li pesach k’chudo shel machat, v’ani eftach lachem k’pischo shel ulam.” When we take the first step, which is nothing more (or less) than feeling the pain of the abyss in our lives without Hashem’s constant presence, suddenly things start to happen that we never imagined possible. And when we take that first step, recognizing that we cannot serve Hashem without His help, then our teshuvah will surely be accepted, for we know that we have to constantly implore Hashem to keep us far away from sin. If we rely on our own efforts and will-power, then we know what happens. We already saw what happens, far too many times. “Hashem oheiv mishpat,” says the holy Zohar. The Ribbono shel Olam loves justice. Therefore, one (long) day in the year is set aside for din, strict judgment, without any mercy to mitigate it. This is Rosh Hashanah, when all the prosecuting angels are given permission to come and incite against the Jewish People and recount our sins. How can we not tremble? But if we cling to Hashem and beg to be protected, how can He refuse us? How do we cling to Hashem? We might think: with our tefillos. But the Gemara states otherwise: “Imru lefanai malchiyos, k’dei shetamlichuni aleichem; imru lefanai zichronos, k’dei sheta’aleh zichroneichem lefanai. U’bemah? B’shofar.” This is hard to understand. We

are to “say” malchiyos and zichronos, and the Gemara asks, “with what?” Of course, with our mouths! How else does a person speak? But that is not the answer. The Gemara tells us that our “speech” on Rosh Hashanah is accomplished with the shofar. Why

Accepting Hashem’s malchus means one crucial thing: That everything is from Him, including the ability to serve Him is this so? One explanation is found in the Zohar, which relates that at the time of din, Rivkah (the Shechinah) calls to Yaakov, her son, to bring mata’amim (delicacies) – the Torah and mitzvos of Klal Yisrael, “Vehakol kol Yaakov” – this is the shofar. We come before Hashem with the evidence of our devotion to Him, carrying our Torah and mitzvos, but when we want to

36 Bringing you the Buzz on Savings & Events I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

silence the voices of our accusers and stop them from recounting our misdeeds, we have no voice. This is no time for rationalizations, intellectual excuses, or “logical” explanations regarding why we slipped up in the past. Those are all ego-based, and we have to move beyond ego. How do we accomplish this? With the shofar. The shofar brings us to “omek halev” – the depths of our hearts – the place where we are connected to Hashem absolutely. It takes us back to the realization that all the trappings of this world are nothing but an illusion, and reminds us that all we want, and need, is to be in our Father’s loving embrace. When the Satan hears the voice of the shofar, he is terrified, thinking that the time has come to shecht him – and in truth, this is exactly what will happen when all of us return to Hashem in purity. Do we tremble when we hear the shofar? Yes, we should tremble, but at the same time we should rejoice, at the fresh opportunity we are being given to crown Hashem King over us and submit to His rule. The Yamim Noraim are truly days of awe, and yet, Chazal tell us that on these days, the Ribbono shel Olam is so close to us, and that this is the ideal time to seek Him out and approach Him. “Atem nitzavim hayom kulchem lifnei Hashem Elokeichem… v’atem hadveikim b’Hashem Elokeichem chayim kulchem hayom.” Today, on Rosh Hashanah, we stand before Hashem, with nothing separating us from Him. The books are open before us – how can we not tremble? But who writes in those books? Only us, ourselves. If we choose to write ourselves into the sefer of the tzaddikim, then we will be granted life, to serve Hashem, to be connected to Him at every possible moment. Why would we settle for anything less? Adapted from the sefer Nekudas Levavi

BUILDING HOMES OF HARMONY

What Do You Lose By Winning? By Rabbi Shemaya Landau

A

t the end of his Laws of Chanukah, Rambam brings an intriguing halachah regarding the relative importance of lighting Chanukah and Shabbos candles. He writes: “If a person has [sufficient means to buy what he needs] for Shabbos lights and Chanukah lights, or Shabbos lights and [wine for] Kiddush, Shabbos lights come first because of [the importance of] tranquility in the home. [This is obvious] because the Holy Name was erased in order to make peace between a man and his wife. How great is peace – the entire Torah was given only in order to make peace in the world, as it says: ‘All its ways are pleasant and all its paths are peaceful.” Ordinarily, erasing the Holy Name of Hashem is a terrible sin. When a sofer writes the Shem Hashem in a sefer Torah, tefillin, or mezuzah, he takes the utmost care to do so with precision, and there are scribes who immerse in the mikveh prior to each writing of Hashem’s Name. If, chas v’shalom, the Name is written incorrectly, it cannot be simply erased. Instead, a special method is used whereby the entire top layer of the parchment is removed with the wrongly-written Name intact, leaving a blank area below in which to insert the new word.

And yet, there is one specific instance when the Torah tells us that the Name is to be written and then erased! How can this be? If a man suspects his wife of

The closer we get to Geulah, the greater become the forces opposing shalom in the world having behaved unfaithfully, the woman is brought before the judges and given a test to either confirm or dispel his suspicions. The woman, referred to as a sotah, drinks water that was used to erase the name of Hashem, and if she is guilty, she dies

a terrible death. If she is innocent, however, she will thrive as a result of drinking the water. The question then presents itself: If the woman is guilty, why would she choose to drink the water and die in so awful a manner? She could simply confess her wrongdoing, do teshuvah, and continue her life. Although she would have to be divorced from her husband, she would be free to marry another man. Why would anyone prefer death over such an option? One answer is that the Torah is teaching us a lesson in human psychology – how hard it is to confess one’s wrongdoings in public. Yes, the sotah actually prefers to die a terrible death rather than admit to her sin. And by giving her the option of ending her life in this way, the Torah also shows us how far the Ribbono shel Olam is prepared to go, in order to spare even a terrible sinner from being shamed. How much more so should we forego our honor in order not to embarrass another human being! Furthermore, the Torah chooses to teach us this lesson davka with regard to a matter between husband and wife, the relationship where there is the most at stake and where feelings are the most easily wounded. Even in this most extreme case of lack of fidelity, the husband must know that his

wife’s honor is to be protected. In his Igros Kodesh (volume ten, p.289), the Lubavitcher Rebbe ztz”l beautifully elucidates the underlying concept: “Even if you think that you are in the right, and even when this is actually so, you should go about achieving your goals in a pleasant and peaceful manner. Indeed, this is the obligation of a Jew… to act with forbearance.” And he concludes, “When you conduct yourself in this manner, you will meet with success in all your endeavors.” This is not to say that behaving in such a manner is easy. Chazal have told us that “no two people think alike,” and therefore there is bound to be friction in any relationship, even between otherwise identical twins. Nonetheless, we know that it is possible to overcome the natural tendency towards discord, and that

“lefum tzaara, agra” – according to the struggle is the reward (Avos 5:23). Of all relationships, that between husband and wife is the most critical, and therefore the reward is greatest – the Shechinah, Hashem’s Presence, dwells in a home where husband and wife live together in tranquility. Where the Shechinah is, all good things are to be found – fine, upstanding children; parnassah; health… And the Satan is well aware of this, which is why so many of his efforts go towards frustrating shalom bayis. Divorce is a tragedy not only at the individual level, but also at a national level. The Gemara (Gittin 90b) tells us that when a couple divorces, the Mizbeyach sheds tears. We know that the Mizbeyach, the altar in the Beis Hamikdash, is where atonement was granted and where prayers were recited for the peace

of the entire Jewish people. If the Mizbeyach is crying, this tells us that divorce is a matter that affects the entire cosmos. Today, we see divorce rates rising to unheard-of proportions, and there is a reason for this. It is brought down in various sefarim that each of the millennia from creation until the world’s end is associated with the rectification of a different sefirah. This millennium, the sixth, is associated with the sixth sefirah which is yesod – relationships between people, especially between spouses. Furthermore, the Gemara (Yoma 9b) reveals that the reason behind the current galus is lack of shalom, and therefore, the closer we get to Geulah, the greater become the forces opposing shalom in the world, especially that between man and wife. How many times do we quarrel and fight over an issue, only to wonder afterward what all the fuss was about? The vast majority of our arguments are over inconsequential issues, and if we are honest, we will admit that “coming out on top” is really what we are aiming for, rather than being proved right. Yet even when one party is clearly in the right, is that sufficient reason to argue and destroy peace? At the end of the day, what really matters? “Gadol hashalom – great is peace,” says the Sifri, “as all blessings end with peace, as it says, ‘Hashem will lift up His face toward you and give you peace.” Now, as we approach the Yamim Noraim, we remind ourselves how vulnerable we are, how dependent we are on Hashem’s mercy at every moment. For His part, Hashem is just waiting for the opportunity to shower us with abundance, but nobody fills a cup without a base… Let’s make a greater effort to become vessels that can hold kedushah, vessels made whole by peace and unity. Starting at home, where it really counts.

One-Stop Shopping for Kids Couture

BABY L A

fter just five m i n u t e s browsing through the racks at Babylicious you’ll realize that your days of traipsing from one store to the next in search of clothing for your growing brood are over. With all sizes from newborn to 16 girls and 12 boys, Babylicious is literally everything a mother could ever want. Co-owners Rifky Davidovici and Chaya Laya Kaplan have made shopping a pleasurable experience for both mothers and children, by providing a vast selection of carefully chosen clothing for children of all

ages. Their inventory incorporates a wide range of brands, styles, and prices, virtually guaranteeing that everyone walks out of the store smiling.

Babylicious began as a hobby, when the two friends, both mothers of small children, wanted to find something productive to do with their spare time, and realized that simply providing clothing for their own growing families could be the kernel of a lucrative business venture. “We started off eight years ago in a basement in Flatbush selling layette and gift items,” explains Chaya Laya. “The business quickly expanded, and three years later we moved to a garage behind one of our homes. As our kids got older, we added children’s clothing to our line.”

Over the years, Babylicious’ inventory continued to expand, and today the two women pride themselves on ordering just the right mix of merchandise, particularly when it comes to older girls. “People have a hard time dressing their girls as they get older,” says Chaya Laya. “We concentrate on tznius and proper skirt length, without ever compromising on fashion. We work with our customers and help them create their own combinations, and sometimes when their kids try things on they are surprised at how well the pieces work together and how good they look.” Babylicious distinguishes itself not only with its impressive selection but also with its outstanding service,

LICIOS

going the extra mile for each and every customer, even ordering additional sizes of a particular item at the customer’s request. Babylicious imports merchandise from designers worldwide, such as IKKS, Ketiketa, C De C, Louis Louise, Marie Chantal, Amelia, Anais & I, Liho, Babe & Tess, Sierra Julian, Morley, Imps & Elf, and Catamini. Their house brand, Etch, designed by Rifky and Chaya Laya themselves, features skirts that combine tznius with up-to-the-minute styling, and have become wardrobe staples for both women and girls. They also have a great selection of outerwear for both weekday and Shabbos, as well as headbands, hats, scarves, and a full line of new and exciting accessories for both boys and girls.

“We try to make outfitting your child an enjoyable experience,” says Rifky. Babylicious plans to make its one-of-a-kind shopping experience even more accessible with its website, babyliciouskids.com, which is currently under construction. Clearly, the two founders have found their niche, and satisfied customers are spreading the word about the children’s boutique that manages to be exclusive yet friendly. In order to accommodate its growing customer base, Babylicious moved to larger quarters in July, this time to 3000 Avenue K at the corner of Nostrand Avenue. The new location offers the convenience of one-stopshopping in a popular area as well as convenient parking.

Babylicious is open from 10:30 - 5:30 Sundays through Thursday and 10:30 - 1:30 on Friday.

NUTRITION

SUGAR IS NOT ALWAYS SWEET By R. Margalit

W

hat’s dark, viscous, and comes from deep under the ground? No, it’s no crude oil – “molasses” is the right answer. Molasses, just like table sugar, comes from sugar cane. The roots of this plant extend extremely deep under the soil, usually around 15 feet down but sometimes as deep as 19 feet. This means that the plant bypasses depleted topsoil and instead feeds off nutrient-dense soil from much further down. Of course, molasses doesn’t look as pretty as granulated sugar, and for many years, it was not even considered to be suitable for human consumption. Anyone looking to buy it had to head to an animal feed store and pretend that it was for his livestock. During other periods, molasses was “poor man’s sugar” as opposed to the sparkling white substance that graced the rich man’s

table. Just as other foods once seen as superior have been recently unmasked as damaging to health, so too has sugar been painted as a villain in recent years, for reasons known to most of us. What many people don’t know, however, is that not only does sugar not add any nutritional value to our diet, it can actually leech the nutrients out of the foods we eat. Minerals, especially, are flushed out of the body when sugar is consumed in excess. Absorption of protein, too, is hindered. (As an aside, this is the basis of one theory relating to pinworm infestation: that the body becomes a host not because of excess sugar consumption itself, but because that excess depletes the body of proteins needed to keep parasites at bay.) Molasses, on the other hand, is a rich source of nutrients. Furthermore, it has a low glycemic index, meaning that its glucose

and carbohydrates are metabolized slowly, necessitating less insulin production and stabilizing blood sugar levels. There seems to be no link between molasses and risk of developing diabetes – if anything, the opposite is true. One doesn’t even need to eat a large quantity of molasses in order to reap the benefits. Just two teaspoons of the dark, syrupy liquid provide a significant amount of essential vitamins and minerals, and set you back only 32 calories! Manganese is a trace mineral that protects against damage from free radicals in the body. It also enhances the body’s production of energy from protein and carbohydrates and helps to synthesize fatty acids that the nervous system needs for optimum functioning. iron utilization, development of bone and connective tissue, and production of the skin and hair pigment melanin. Numerous health problems can develop when copper intake is inadequate, including iron deficiency anemia, ruptured blood vessels, osteoporosis, joint problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, brain disturbances, elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol and reduced HDL (good) cholesterol levels, irregular heartbeat, and increased susceptibility to infections. Molasses is also commonly used as a natural iron supplement, replacing artificial iron that often causes constipation and other digestive disturbances. Compared with red meat, molasses gives more iron for less calories, and furthermore, is fat-free. It boosts iron levels without unpleasant side effects, enhancing energy, providing relief from rheumatoid arthritis, and rejuvenating skin and hair. Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of calcium. Calcium, one of the most important minerals in the body, is involved in a variety of physiological activities essential to life, including the ability of the heart and other muscles to contract, blood clotting, the conduction of nerve impulses to and from the brain, regulation of enzyme activity, and cell membrane function. Calcium is needed to form and maintain strong bones and teeth during youth and adolescence, and to help prevent the loss of bone that can occur during menopause and as a result of rheumatoid arthritis. Calcium binds to and removes toxins from the colon, thus reducing the risk of colon cancer, and because it is involved in nerve conduction, may help prevent migraine attacks. Like calcium, potassium plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. It is also involved in maintaining the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base (pH) balance. When potassium levels drop too low, muscles weaken

and a person tires more easily, as potassium deficiency causes a decrease in glycogen (the fuel used by exercising muscles) storage. Magnesium is also necessary for healthy bones and energy production. About two-thirds of the magnesium in the human body is found in our bones. Some helps

Just two teaspoons provide a significant amount of vitamins and minerals give bones their physical structure, while the rest is found on the surface of the bone where it is stored for the body to draw upon as needed. Magnesium balances the effect of calcium in the body, preventing calcium from rushing into nerve cells and activating them, keeping the nerves and connected blood vessels and muscles relaxed. If our diet provides us with too little magnesium, calcium can gain free entry, and the nerve cell can become overactivated, sending too many messages and causing excessive contraction. Insufficient magnesium can also contribute to high blood pressure, muscle spasms (including spasms of the heart muscle or the spasms of the airways symptomatic of asthma), and migraine headaches, as well as muscle cramps, tension, and fatigue.

Not All Molasses Are Created Equal All of the above actually applies only to one specific type of molasses: the unsulfured blackstrap kind. Often, young sugar cane is harvested, in which case sulfur dioxide is added to the molasses produced as a preservative. When the mature plant is used, however, there is no need for a preservative and this unhealthy chemical compound is not added. Unopened, molasses can be kept in a tightly sealed container either in the refrigerator or in a cool dry area for up to a year. After opening, it should preferably be used within six months.

How Is Molasses Made? The first step is harvesting the sugar cane plant, preferably when the plant is fully grown. The leaves are stripped off, and then the juice is extracted from the canes, usually by crushing or mashing. Then, the juice is boiled, in order to concentrate it and promote the crystallization of sugar, which is then removed. The remaining “juice” is called “mild molasses” or the first molasses. This has the highest sugar content of all molasses, as relatively little sucrose has been extracted. This remaining juice is then boiled once again, and more crystallized sucrose is removed. The more concentrated juice now left behind is called “dark molasses” or the second molasses. It is sweet but with a bitter tinge to its taste. The third boiling and extraction results in “blackstrap molasses.” It is not as sweet as dark molasses and has a bitter-tart taste which takes a bit of getting used to. But it is undoubtedly the healthiest of all the three types. Make sure to check that it is unsulfured. Now the only question left is: Can I use molasses for my honey cake? Well, I haven’t tried yet, but…

RECIPES

Moroccan Lamb with Honey and Prunes

The challenge: To find recipes that are timeless and traditional, but also innovative and inspirational…

After all, isn’t that what we’re trying to do at this time of year – to take the old and invigorate it, forming the new, enhanced versions of ourselves as we head into the new year?

Ingredients ½ cup pitted prunes 1 ½ cups hot tea 2 ¼ lb stewing or braising lamb such as shoulder, cut into chunky portions 1 onion, chopped 5-6 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp curry powder pinch of freshly grated nutmeg 2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 Tbsp hot water 5-9 Tbsp honey, to taste 1 cup beef/lamb stock 1 cup blanched almonds, toasted 2 Tbsp chopped fresh coriander (cilantro) leaves salt and ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350F. Put the prunes in a bowl, pour over the tea, and cover. Leave to soak and plump up. Meanwhile, put the lamb, chopped onion, parsley, ginger, curry powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and a large pinch of ground black pepper in a roasting pan. Cover and cook in the oven for about two hours, or until the meat is tender. Drain the prunes; add their liquid to the lamb. Add the hot water with the honey and stock. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes, turning the lamb occasionally. Add the prunes to the pan and stir gently to mix. Serve sprinkled with the toasted almonds and chopped coriander.

Spinach with Raisins and Pine Nuts This original dish incorporates several of the simanim. Leave out the pine nuts if you prefer, though they’re not technically the nuts that we avoid eating over the Yamim Noraim. Ingredients 4 Tbsp raisins 2 Ÿ fresh spinach leaves, washed & checked as required 3 Tbsp olive oil 6-8 scallions, thinly sliced, or 1-2 small yellow or white onions, finely chopped, or leek 4 Tbsp pine nuts salt and ground black pepper

Put the raisins in a small bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. Leave to stand for about ten minutes until plumped up, then drain. (If the raisins need to be checked, you must strain the water through cheesecloth and check for infestation, and then check the raisins as you would beans.) Steam or cook the spinach in a pan over a mediumhigh heat, with only the water that clings to the leaves after washing, for one-two minutes until the leaves are bright green and wilted. Remove from the heat and drain well. Leave to cool. When the spinach has cooled, chop roughly with a sharp knife. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium-low heat, then lower the heat further and add the onions/ leek. Fry for about five minutes, or until soft, then add the spinach, raisins, and pine nuts. Raise the heat and cook for two-three minutes to warm through. Season with salt and ground black pepper to taste.

hile the race for mayor has remained competitive and unpredictable, the race for Brooklyn District Attorney is heating up, especially in terms of outreach to the Orthodox community. As the only incumbent Brooklyn candidate in this year’s election, what determines Charles “Joe” Hynes’ success in his reelection bid may be his ability to maintain the loyalty of the frum community, with whom he has maintained a positive relationship over the last

two decades. This week, District Attorney Hynes visited several prominent rabbanim to receive their brachos and wish the community a happy new year ahead of Rosh Hashanah. Among the rabbanim Hynes visited were: the Satmar Rebbe; the Munkatcher Rebbe; R’ Berish Meizels, the Satmar Rav in Borough Park; R’ Yankel Miller, the

Eizenstadter Rav; R’ Mechel Steinmetz, the Skverer Dayan; and the leadership of the Belz kehillah in Borough Park. Accompanying Mr. Hynes was his main supporter in the Orthodox Jewish community, Councilman David G. Greenfield. District Attorney Hynes was warmly welcomed and praised both for his efforts to keep Brooklyn safe, and for treating the community fairly during his years as DA. Mr. Hynes left with brachos and expressions of support

of his candidacy from every single rav he visited. According to sources who were present at the 45 minute-long meeting with the Satmar Rebbe in Williamsburg, Mr. Hynes spoke about the programs he has established to keep the neighborhoods in Brooklyn safe and the relationships he has maintained over the years. The Rebbe thanked Mr. Hynes for always having

the Orthodox community. “At least with you, while we disagree on some issues, we know that you have an open door and a willingness to listen to us,” one of the rabbanim told Mr. Hynes. The race for District Attorney will be decided on Tuesday, September 10th. Everyone is urged to go out and vote!
