Parshas Ki Savo
Powerful Forces of Growth “And it shall be if you listen to the voice of Hashem, your G-d, to keep and to perform all of His commandments that I command you this day… Blessed are you in your coming and blessed shall you be in your going.” — Devarim 28:1–6 The destiny of the Jewish people In this moving address, Moshe Rabbeinu, our teacher, once again defines the path of the Jewish people. “If you will listen to the ways of the Torah, all the blessings will come to you...” The Targum defines “if you will listen,” as “if you will accept,” meaning, if you accept the word of Hashem to guard his mitzvos, commandments, and do them, then everything else will follow. You will blessed in the city and blessed in the field. You will have children, livestock, healthy crops, and abundance. And finally, “You will be blessed in your coming and your going.” Rashi explains this last phrase to mean that you will leave the world as clean of sin as you were when you came into the world. This Rashi is difficult to understand. A man who leaves this earth as clean of sin as when he entered is a complete tsaddik, righteous person — a level that is difficult to even envision. How can Rashi say that all we need to do in order to reach that lofty level is to fully accept Hashem’s mitzvos, commandments? The answer to this can best be understood with a mashal, parable. A change in perspective Imagine we take a man from the sixteenth century and bring him into our world — into your living room on the day
4
that you are moving. He watches as a team of men moves the contents of your house into a truck parked in the driveway. First he sees them carry out the heavy furniture: the dressers, the beds, the dining room table, and the breakfront. Next come boxes and boxes of clothing and dishes, pots and pans, toys and books. He stands watching, his mouth agape. In his life he hasn’t seen this much abundance, certainly not as the possessions of one family. After the whole house is emptied out, the movers enter the truck, and one gets behind the wheel. At that point, the man can no longer contain himself. “How do you intend to move this huge wagon with everything in it?” he cries out. “It will take a team of four, maybe six horses!” Likely, you would find great difficulty in explaining to him that one man, by pressing his foot on the accelerator, will harness the power of the engine with a power output of hundreds of horses. In his world, he has never seen anything like this, and he has no basis for comparison. Upper world systems This seems to be the answer to our question. Hashem created the physical world with systems and laws governing them. So, too, He created the spiritual world with rules and procedures that control it. And as in the physical world, there are powerful engines that can accomplish what hundreds of men can’t. In the spiritual world, there are techniques and structures that can achieve astonishing results. To advertise, call 718-513-9885
The Targum is revealing to us one of the powerful systems of the upper worlds. When a person resolves with all of his heart and soul to serve Hashem, he puts into operation powerful forces that catapult him forward toward the completion of that acceptance. These forces now drive him toward spiritual perfection. He can veer off and he can resist the pull, but that force has been put into place, and assuming that he doesn’t negate it, he will be pulled to reach that lofty level. If he allows these influences to do what they have been created to do, he will reach dizzying heights, leaving this earth without sin. This concept is very applicable, as we often find ourselves looking at the levels of greatness outlined in the Torah and wonder how we can even aspire to reach such heights. This Rashi teaches us that all we need to do is start the process. Our job is to completely and totally accept the mitzvos before and beyond everything else. When we do so, Hashem helps, and powerful forces propel us on a path toward perfection. Visiting Jewish Prisoners in Jail We can help to ensure that prisoners have the resources they need to become their best selves in the darkest of places. BY LEAH WEINTRAUB 8
SHIMON AND MARK* BOND OVER COFFEE AT THE PRISON. Under the watchful eyes of the prison guards, it’s the only time that Mark can invite an outsider to sit down for a chat, something he looks forward to all week. Shimon is energized to bring Mark a few moments of normality, exchange some words of Torah, and bring out some meaning in it all. He joined the Aleph Institute’s Visiting Circle (AVC) to spend some time with people incarcerated in prison, many of whom rarely if ever receive a visitor because families generally live far away and the travel costs and overnight accommodations are out of reach; and, families simply break apart - it’s a collateral consequence of being in prison. After he was asked to visit someone in a Miami prison who only speaks Hebrew, Rabbi Zalman Gansburg, Chabad of Palmetto Bay, signed on to visit people in prison every two weeks. “More than I give, I gain,” he says. In most prisons, when you go through the electronic security check (your phone stays in the car; you’re allowed only your driver’s license and your car keys, both of which you hand in), you wait in the visitors’ room to be buzzed into the prisoners’ visitors room. There, while you wait, there’s nothing. No ‘reality show’ playing on a wall-screen; no glossy magazines on a coffee table; in fact, no coffee table at all. Chairs set in concrete. Sit and wait. Get in touch. You are about to visit with a prisoner.

“
He was absolutely flabbergasted that I came to visit him, he tells me that he’s been incarcerated for six years, and I’m the third social visit he’s had in six years. Could you imagine....three visits in six years.
The visit packs in a lot of mitzvahs. “It’s safe to say that the majority of people in prison have mental health struggles,” Rabbi Gansburg says, “and visiting them involves Bikur Cholim, visiting the sick, one of the actions through which the Mishnah states one “eats of its fruits” in this world, and retains the “principle” in the next.” The open love of a fellow Jew as the two men sit across the table from each other is unfettered, unrestricted in an unexpected way, as under lock and key both sides experience the deep truth of unconditional love, all barriers removed. Visiting a prisoner also alleviates pangs of loneliness, even despair. The life force fueled by our basic need for human and familial connection is switched on, relieved if only for a short time of the emotional ache for some human connection. Even after the visit, the spiritual solace and warmth continues as a
source of inspiration and strength; it could be someone to share growth with, encouragement, and a warm, easy smile, maybe even a shared laugh. Simple. It’s calming to the mind; it helps sustain a person’s belief in a loving Hashem; it strengthens his faith that he’s not alone; it warms his, or her, heart, and in so doing these visits help redeem the spirit. It gives over the possibility to believe in and hope and pray for the world in which he or she, redeemed, can live, and trust in a nation to whom every living person is a diamond.
that prisoners have the resources they need to become their best selves in the darkest of places, and can become ready to support themselves as well as contribute to society when they get out. As one volunteer emailed: “I had a very meaningful visit with the two prisoners yesterday. I first met with Mr. G. for about an hour. He was absolutely flabbergasted that I came to visit him, he tells me that he’s been incarcerated for six years, and I’m the third social visit he’s had in six years. Could you imagine....three visits in six years. He was thrilled I came, and I promised him I will come back and see him.” Aleph is asking for Aleph Visiting Circle volunteers in every city and state—especially Brooklyn, Miami, Los Angeles, and Chicago, to come forward. The goal “is to reach every Jewish prisoner so they know that even in prison they are never alone or forgotten.” * name changed
Rabbi Gansburg says his bi-monthly prison visits have forced him to confront a world that’s beyond the scope of everyday experience. When you drive away from the prison and the people in the barred world, freedom, and the freedom to be there for someone else who is captive, becomes acutely enhanced. “Later on, I went to learn in Eretz Yisroel and I continued to maintain a personal connection with the Ribnitz Rebbe. I was very saddened by his Petirah, feeling like I lost a person who truly cared about me.” “One day, my father called me and asked, “You know the Ribnitz Rebbe?” I was so surprised. I asked, “Why, how do you know?” He shared with me that an old friend from his yeshiva days, who he hadn’t seen in 20 years, called him up, with regards for me from the Ribnitz Rebbe. This friend had a dream in which the Ribnitz Rebbe told him, “Call up your friend Avraham and tell him that his son Shmuel is going to be okay. He is a good boy and he will see a lot of nachas from him.” “My father is Avraham. I am Shmuel. The Ribnitz Rebbe continued to take care of me and look out for me, after his Petira! And that’s why I chose a membership at his Tzion. I am sharing this story so that others know. If you develop a connection with the Rebbe, if you daven at his Kever or send messengers to daven for you through Tehillim Kollel, he will take care of you too.”

“I’d like to share with you the reason why I chose a Tehillim Kollel membership at the Tzion of the Ribnitz Rebbe. When I was a young boy, I was born into a beautiful family, filled with Talmidei Chachamim. My fathers, my brothers, they all excelled at their learning. But I was different. I tried really hard but I could never be like them. I wasn’t born with the same talents. My father was always disappointed in me. During the years of my struggle, I frequently visited the Ribnitz Rebbe and poured out my heart and all my pain. The Rebbe was always warm and encouraging, and by the end of the visit, I felt uplifted and comforted. My father never knew about these times.”

lal Yisrael is facing difficult times. All of us have individual challenges that preoccupy our minds and our lives – the need for a refua sheleima, parnassa, a shidduch, having children, raising them . .. to name a few. So too, we look for an appropriate response to the tragedies, R”l, that have rocked our communities. The Midrash relates that when Klal Yisrael needed rain R’ Tanchuma proclaimed fast days to arouse Heavenly mercy. When it seemed that the drought would not be terminated through the fasting, R’ Tanchuma requested that the masses perform the mitzvah of tzedakah. One particular individual encountered his ex-wife who had fallen upon difficult times and pleaded to him for help, whereupon he gave her much-needed funds. The incident became known to R’ Tanchuma, who sent for him in order to clarify the matter. Upon hearing the account, R’ Tanchuma called out, “Ribono Shel Olam, this man is a human being with a cruel nature, and not obligated to support her; yet he acted mercifully and gave her assistance. Doesn’t it follow that You should act with mercy towards Your children, for whose maintenance You are responsible?” Without delay, it began to rain. This story illustrates vividly the tremendous power of chessed. Yet another lesson exudes therein. Rav Chaim Shmulevitz cites this Midrash in his classic
18
Sichos Mussar (5733, maamar 29) to convey the idea that sheviras hamiddos, eradicating undesirable qualities of character, carries tremendous potent for awakening Heavenly compassion and abrogating evil decrees, R”l. The Rosh Yeshivah notes several examples from the Gemara and Medrash in which an individual conquered a personality limitation, thus effecting an outpouring of rachmei Shomayim. What might this concept mean for us, in our times? What could this lesson mean in terms of successfully weathering individual trials and problems that seem to confront so many? Is it possible that such efforts may play a role in determining what type of year is destined for us? One of the pivotal middos is that of anavah, humility. Sefer Chovos Halevovos in Shaar Hakeniah says, “Rosh hateshuvah: Hashiflus v’hashachus v’hakeniah,” the beginning of teshuvah is lowliness, acquiescence and humility, as it says, ‘My people … shall humble themselves, pray and seek My compassion, and turn from their evil ways” (Divrei Hayamim II: 7:14). Sefer Orchos Tzaddikim in Shaar Ha’anavah tells us that “Ha’anavah shoresh ha’avodah,” humility is the root of Divine service, and that it earns us favor in Hashem’s eyes, as Mishlei teaches, “To the humble He gives favor” (3:34), which in turn enables our tefillos to be more readily answered and our mitzvos to be accepted joyously by Hashem.
To advertise, call 718-513-9885
Besides the spiritual benefits, cultivating humility will enhance everyday living in various ways. One of the benefits of humility is that it assists us in dealing with insults. It is a most formidable challenge to resist responding in kind to an insult, an experience to which almost everyone can relate. Yet, being ma’aver al midosov, refraining from responding in kind to someone who insults us, brings forgiveness for sins, since it compels Hashem’s manifestation of the Attribute of Din (Justice), in a manner of “measure for measure,” to abstain from analyzing our improper behavior (see Rosh Hashanah 17a with Rashi). Finding the ability within ourselves to combat arrogance and act with humility is a formidable task but we can slowly train ourselves in this direction. Iggeres HaRamban, the famous letter of instruction that the Ramban penned to his son, speaks about the merits of this precious middah and writes that by distancing oneself from anger, the quality of anavah will enter one’s heart. Furthermore, the Ramban writes, through humility, one will gain yiras Shamayim, and acquisition of these qualities will enable one to be samech b’chelko, happy with his lot. The Ramban himself wrote that its recitation would facilitate having one’s tefillos answered. The Pele Yoetz (in his section on atzvus) echoes the Ramban’s words when he says that arrogance leads to sadness, since one
is frustrated when others act contrary to his will or he is not treated with the honor he feels he deserves. That a humble person is more predisposed to experience simcha is significant for the Lev Simcha of Ger taught that simcha, besides serving as a tool in avodas Hashem, serves as a segula for attaining salvation. Once, someone who lacked parnassa bemoaned his situation to him. The Lev Simcha advised him to be b’simcha. “How can I be b’simcha when I am beset by such a problem?” the person responded. The Rebbe smiled encouragingly and countered, “What won’t a person do in order to make a living!” Humility involves moving away from self-centeredness and concerning ourselves with how our actions impact on others. There is a story of a childless couple who were chassidim of the great tzaddik Reb Moshe of Rozvedov. The husband would travel to his Rebbe each year for the Yomim Noraim, when Reb Moshe would bless him that he merit offspring, but the brachos had yet to be fulfilled. Once, he met Reb Moshe’s brother Reb Meir of Dzikov, also a lofty personage, to whom he poured out his tale of woe. Reb Meir suggested to this Yid that he daven with him on the forthcoming Yomim Noraim, after which a yeshuah would ensue. The Yid was in a quandary. He had gone to the court of Reb Moshe for so many years. How could he go to Reb Meir instead? He went to discuss the matter with his Rebbe, who told him wholeheartedly that he should daven with Reb Meir on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and expressed the hope that he would be helped. With Reb Moshe’s approval, the Yid prepared to travel to Dzikov for the Yom Hadin. However, ultimately he changed his plans and went to daven with Reb Moshe as usual. The Rebbe was surprised to see his beloved chassid among the crowd and summoned him for an explanation. The Yid told him: “I discussed the matter with my wife. It is common knowledge that I am your chassid and people assume you have given us brachos for children, albeit the brachos have not come to fruition. If I daven with Reb Meir and we merit to have a child this year, people will conclude that your brother is a greater tzaddik than you. We cannot see ourselves causing an affront to your honor and therefore I decided to cancel the trip to Dzikov. The Rebbe was deeply moved and said, “For such sensitivity alone you deserve to have a child.” And so it was that a son was born to them that year. The massive flooding that recently overtook Pakistan killed thousands and left millions homeless. That and other disasters in the world drive home the lesson that man is limited, despite his progress in technology and other areas. Similarly, the breakdown of the U.S. economic system over the last couple of years sends us a cogent message that we are not in control, bringing to mind the words of the Navi Chaggai “Li hakessef v’li hazahav na’um Hashem” – the silver is Mine and the gold is Mine, says Hashem, a most compelling hint to us to humble ourselves before Hashem. May our efforts in striving to acquire the middah of humilty and all desirable middos stand us in good stead towards being inscribed for a kesivah v’chasimah tova and meriting Hashem’s bountiful blessings.

Melt margarine in a saucepan over low heat, then add grated and diced apple and stir to coat. Add flour, cinnamon, and salt and cook over medium heat, about 5 minutes. Add caramel and cook for another 5 minutes, until thick and syrupy; let cool before using.
Place one heaping tablespoon caramel apple mixture in the middle of four rectangles of puff pastry. Brush the other four rectangles of puff pastry with beaten egg using a pastry brush and lay egg-washed side down on top of filling. Use a fork to seal edges, then make a few holes on top with tines of the fork. Repeat with other sheet of puff pastry. Bake strudels on a parchment-lined baking sheet; let cool 15 minutes before serving. Make icing: In a mixing bowl, combine water, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Transfer to a plastic bag or piping bag and drizzle on strudels just before serving. (Strudels are best served warm; reheat for a few minutes in oven if desired.) To advertise, call 718-513-9885

At War before Rosh Hashanah by Rabbi Noah Weinberg
A
No one but you can make you great.
pious man encountered a group of triumphant soldiers coming back from a fierce battle, flushed with victory. “You have returned victorious from a minor struggle,” he said to them. “Now get ready for the major battle.” “And what is that major battle?” they asked. “The war within us, against the evil inclination. That is the great war. You just came back from three weeks of intense fighting, and now the enemy has been vanquished. But fighting the insanity of the yetzer hara, our evil inclination, never ends. Even after 100 defeats, he will never leave you alone. The battle is constant. He will not rest until he kills you. The moment you let your guard down, he will pounce and attempt to utterly destroy you. “In a typical war there is a front line. Sometimes you are surrounded, but at least you know where the enemy lies.
32
The yetzer hara, however, is a master of disguise. He knows how to mask illusions as reality, how to rationalize evil as good. He is so devious, he knows how to get you to harm yourself and your loved ones without your even realizing it.” (Duties of the Heart, Shaar Yichud Hamaaseh, chapter 5) We are in the middle of the Hebrew month of Elul, gearing up for Rosh Hashanah, and it is time to intensify the battle against the yetzer hara and restock our supply of weapons. The enemy’s first plan of attack is to knock out your sense of personal responsibility and get you to hand it over to someone else. “Let my teachers inspire me,” you think. Or, “Let my rabbi tell me what I have to work on.” Stop waiting for someone to tell you what to change. You are responsible for yourself. You must do the necessary introspection, get in contact with yourself, and determine what you need to work To advertise, call 718-513-9885
on. As the Mishnah says, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” (Avos 1:14). No one can help you grow unless you take responsibility for yourself. Your teachers can give you the greatest tools in the world for self-transformation, but you will leave those tools on the bench if you don’t take responsibility for your own life. You need to get clarity about what life means to you. What do you want to accomplish this coming year? What are you committed to tackling? If you don’t make these decisions, you might easily delude yourself into thinking that you are preparing adequately for Rosh Hashanah by listening to some inspiring talks and hoping that somehow these great rabbis will make you great. No one can make you great. No one can fight your battles. No one can turn you into a Torah scholar. There are no shortcuts; you are solely responsible for your own growth and learning. Toughen up and stop relying on others. No one can

do it for you.
Judgment and Love The month of Elul seem to be paradoxical. On the one hand it is the time for “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li – I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me” – an acronym for “Elul.” It is a time when we feel Hashems intense love and closeness. Yet Elul is also the time to prepare for Rosh Hashanah, when the Book of Life and the Book of Death are open and the King of the universe sits in judgment, deciding who will live and who will die, who will have cancer and who will be cured, who will be crushed in an accident and who will survive. There seems to be a contradiction between Ani l’dodi v’dodi li and the Day of Judgment. How are the two related? The Ramchal encapsulates in one paragraph the whole point of our existence, and in doing so gives us an answer. In The Way of Hashem (1:4:6) he writes, “The root purpose of the service of Hashem is for the human being to constantly turn to his Creator, to realize that he was created for the sole purpose of being drawn close to his Creator….” Everything that happens to
34
us in this world is for one reason and one reason alone: to get closer to the Almighty, to feel that I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me. The Jew understands that everything Hashem does is for our good; it is an expression of His love. Every judgment He renders – whether a windfall or a bankruptcy – is exactly what we need to grow closer to Him. Ani l’dodi, if you love the Almighty and appreciate that He is your father, then v’dodi li, you will see that the Almighty loves you and that everything He does is for your good. But if you don’t appreciate what Hashem has done for you and instead you have complaints, you will mistakenly think He does not love you. The Ramchal describes the objective of the war against the yetzer hara: “Man was placed in this world only to overcome his evil inclination and subjugate himself to His Creator through the power of his intellect. He must overcome his physical desire and tendencies, and direct all of his activities toward attaining this purpose [of coming close to Hashem]” (ibid). It is up to us to choose to cling to Hashem by vanquishing our yetzer hara and rising above the vanities and confusion of the world. To advertise, call 718-513-9885
Learning Torah The Ramchal then identifies the primary weapon Hashem gave us to fight the yetzer hara and achieve our purpose: “Hashem gave us one means that is greater than anything else in bringing man close to Hashem, and that is Torah study” (1:4:9). There is nothing more powerful than learning Hashems instructions for living. These are the actual words of our Creator. Elul is the time to examine your goals and drives, and to make sure it is for the right reasons. Keep it pure. The shofar is blowing; the Day of Judgment is approaching. You are at war and the enemy is at the gate. Now is the time to strengthen your resolve to fight the great battle against the yetzer hara. It is time to take responsibility for every aspect of your life, to reconnect to Hashems constant love, and to intensify your determination to learn Torah. No one can do it for you.
