BAAL SHEM TOV’S YAHRTZEIT TEFILLAH ON DAY OF SEGULAH (104) OF EREV SHAVUOS IN MEZHIBUZH THROUGH YAD L’ACHIM
A
dmor of Makova shlit”a to lead delegation through Yad L’Achim to assist in Pidyon Shvuyim This coming Tuesday May 30th is the day of tefillah for Erev Shavuos and the yahrtzeit of the Baal Shem Tov Hakadosh. Due to the demand of thousands, Yad L’Achim has once again arranged the special tefillah to take place on this holy day. The holy Admor of Makova shlit”a will lead a delegation of a minyan of talmidei chachamim in tefillah at the hold resting place of the Baal Shem Tov Hakadosh in Mezibuzh, Ukraine for all those who participate in the great mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim through Yad L’Achim. Tefilla requests can be for Shidduchim, Parnassah, Shalom Bayis, Children, Health and all personal requests. Yad L’Achim has received numerous phone calls from people who received their Yeshua after last year’s tefillah. While names for tefillah can be given with no minimum donation, Erev Shavuos has the extra element of the renowned segulah of Rav Chaim Palagi zt”l of 104. The renowned tzaddik and mekubal Rav Chaim Palagi wrote that great reward await those who donate multiples of 104 (in their current currency) to assist those in need. In the United States that translates to a donation of $104 which can be given from maaser. Your tzedaka will assist Yad L’Achim in the great mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim, helping to rescue Jewish women and children trapped in Arab Villages. Today hundreds of boys and girls are learning in Yeshivos and girls’ school because of your support.

Rabbi Ben Tzion Shafier
The Shmuz on the Parsha
Shavuos A Craving to See HASHEM And HASHEM said to Moshe, “Descend, warn the people, lest they break through to HASHEM to see, and a multitude of them will fall.’” – Shemos 19:21
The moment in history The entire nation – every man, woman and child – was gathered at the foot of Har Sinai for what was to be the greatest revelation in the annals of history. HASHEM’s voice was about to be heard. In addition to the transmission of the Torah, the event would forever carve into human awareness the understanding that HASHEM is the Creator. Never before or since has a generation reached that level of understanding. Chazal say that the heavens and earth were opened to the Jewish people, and everyone there reached the level of prophecy. However, there were limitations; the people could only go so far. There is only so much that a human can withstand and not go into sensory overload. Therefore, HASHEM told Moshe, “Warn them that whoever will touch the mountain will die.” Moshe was to ascend alone. The rest
22
of the nation had to remain below. Yet directly before the receiving of the Torah, HASHEM told Moshe to go down and warn the people a second time not to go up the mountain. Rashi explains why HASHEM repeated the warning: “Because of their deep desire to see HASHEM, they might ascend the mountain.” Even though they were warned previously, and even though they knew that going up would spell their death, they might still go up because of a powerful craving to be close to HASHEM.
They were already warned This Rashi seems difficult to understand. If HASHEM told them not go up, and it was explained that the penalty for doing so would be death, wouldn’t that be enough to stop them from violating HASHEM’s command? What makes this question particularly troubling is that this generation understood the gravity of their actions. They lived through the makkos and then kriyas Yam Suf. They saw the glory and power of HASHEM. At that moment, they were privy to a level of understanding that
few humans have ever achieved, which means that they not only understood that HASHEM didn’t want them going up to the actual mountain, they also understood that if they did, they would surely die.
Breaking into Fort Knox As a parallel, imagine we were to meet a man with an extraordinary desire for money. Nothing stops him. He’ll steal, cheat, lie, swindle — anything to make his fortune. But even he won’t be tempted to break into Fort Knox. The armed guards standing there with their machine guns poised are so threatening, and the danger is so real, that despite his great desire for money, the certainty of his death would prevent him from even thinking of breaking in. So too, the generation at Sinai fully understood the consequences of moving forward. How would it be possible that they would still be tempted to go up the mountain?
Human comprised of distinct parts The answer to this question seems to be
www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885
based on a fundamental understanding of man. To make man, HASHEM took opposites entities and molded them into one. Within me is a part with deep-set needs to do that which is noble and proper — and within me is a part that just doesn’t care. The part of me that only wants that which is good is made up of pure intelligence — sechel. The part of me that doesn’t care about anything other than my own needs is made up of base instincts and desires — the Nefesh Ha’Bahami. My sechel clearly recognizes HASHEM as the source of everything and only wishes to be close to my Creator. It actually hungers to be close to HASHEM and pulls me that way. My Nefesh Ha’Bahami can’t recognize or understand anything other than drives and desires, hungers and appetites. It can’t see HASHEM, nor does it care to. The reason that I have such conflicting desires, interests, goals, and passions is that these two parts of me, these complete opposites, are each battling for primacy over me. So I deeply crave being close to HASHEM and I also just don’t care. Same me, just different elements coming to the surface.
Taivah to be close to HASHEM The Mesillos Yesharim explains that by nature, I would be pulled towards HASHEM like a piece of iron is to a magnet. It is the layers and layers of physicality that block the pull. He writes that my sole focus in life should be to break through those layers of physicality until I am again drawn after HASHEM like iron to a magnet.
The role of mitzvos The reason that we find serving HASHEM difficult, and the reason we find experiencing HASHEM’s presence elusive, is because of the layers and layers of desires, instincts, and passions that cover up and block our nishoma’s receptivity. It’s almost like putting a fine radio receiver into a concrete bomb shelter. The radio waves are in the air, but the tons of concrete will block them. The way that a person increases his spiritual receptivity is by keeping and learning the Torah, the ultimate system of self-perfection. All of the mitzvos strengthen my nishoma and help to break the hold the Nefesh Ha’Bahami has over me. The more a person is involved in learning Torah and doing mitzvos, the stronger the nishoma becomes, and the easier it is for him to experience HASHEM.
The Klal Yisroel had a taivah to be close to HASHEM The answer to the question on Rashi seems to be that when the Jewish people were standing at the base of Har Sinai, they reached unprecedented levels of spirituality. Their outside casing had very little influence on them. Their pure nishomas came to the fore. In that state, man is irresistibly drawn to his Creator — pulled, mesmerized. Consequences don’t matter; results are irrelevant. The human needs to be close to HASHEM. HASHEM was warning Moshe of the inherent danger. Since they were going to see HASHEM so clearly, they would also feel an almost unstoppable urge for
closeness to Him. That pull could be so strong that some individuals might go beyond the limit. Even though they were aware of the risk to their lives, it wouldn’t stop them because of their insatiable desire to be close to HASHEM. And so, HASHEM told Moshe, “Warn them again.”
In our world – learning to experience HASHEM There is a very real lesson for us in this. From time to time, we may find it difficult to daven properly, or it may be hard to feel the spirituality of Shabbos. These difficulties are the natural consequence of our physical side. If we aren’t constantly learning and growing in ruchniyus, the physical part of us will become stronger, making it ever more difficult to experience HASHEM’s presence. However, we are also pure sechel. There is a part of each of us that deeply craves speaking to our Creator. There is a component in us that hungers for spiritual growth. By learning Torah and doing mitzvos with fervor and energy, I bring that part to the fore until it becomes stronger, and my physical side becomes weaker. That is how I grow. But not only do I grow, I grow in my desire to be more spiritual, to learn more, to daven with more kavanah. It begins an upward spiral. By putting this process into practice, a person can continue to grow throughout life, reaching higher levels and thereby fulfilling the reason he was put on this planet — to perfect himself and to enjoy that level of perfection for eternity.

y father was a quiet man. Soft spoken, and gentle, he never raised his voice to any of us. Growing up in our household, we knew who the real disciplinarian was: my mother ruled with a sterner hand. Although we knew we were deeply loved, she would let it be known in no uncertain terms when we were in trouble. And if we deserved it (which we usually did), we knew a potch was soon to follow. Daddy on the other hand, had the soft touch. Not for us, the threat: “Just wait until your father gets home.” On the contrary, if we wanted
something, my brother and I knew just whom to approach get it. “Daddy, can I have a dime…a quarter…a dollar? “This refrain was repeated throughout my childhood. Daddy never could never say no to either of us. In retrospect, there is no doubt that we were spoiled rotten. As my father worked very long hours, my mother usually was the one to admonish us. But all it took was one look from my father and the words, “I’m disappointed in you,” and I would burst into tears, devastated. Whenever my brother and I
squabbled, my father would become extremely upset. He could never understand the strange concept of siblings fighting. “We were five children in our house in Hungary, and we never fought,” Daddy used to tell us. He was truly bewildered. And indeed, knowing my father‘s gentle nature and the character of his mild-mannered older brother, Bubi Bachi, I understood perfectly. My father owned a kosher restaurant in Washington Heights and treated his customers and business acquaintances the same way he treated everyone: with the

deepest respect and dignity. Not all his clientele were paying customers, though. An old homeless man who had undergone the horrors of the Holocaust and had lost his faculties would frequent the restaurant for a free meal on a regular basis. When he sat down at a table, other diners would move away hastily, as the stench was unbearable. This poor soul was welcomed into the restaurant repeatedly, and instead of beckoning to a waiter, each time he came in Daddy would take the time to serve him a full meal personally. After all, why should a hard working waiter bear the burden of serving this man when there was no tip involved? And although my father probably lost a great deal of business from paying customers who would frequently leave the restaurant, repulsed by the odor, the old man was never turned away. My father had infinite patience. I remember one Friday afternoon in particular. As usual, Daddy was behind the counter assisting a line of customers. The line was moving swiftly until one specific customer. “How can I help you?” “I’d like a nice large slice of potato kugel.” “How big, about this size?” asked my father, gesturing with his knife to a slice of about three inches. “No, a little bit smaller,” the customer replied. “Okay, this big?” “No, a little big smaller. “This big?” “No, a bit smaller than that.” By this time the other people on line were fidgeting impatiently. “Nu, get a piece already,” a lady muttered, rolling her eyes. Finally, a tiny little sliver of potato kugel was cut. My father never lost his equanimity, though. He dealt with the
customer as if he was placing a $500.00 order. Standing on his feet for hours at a time took a terrible toll on Daddy’s legs, and he developed horrific varicose veins and thrombosis. But he never complained, and continued to work on his feet until the day the restaurant closed down. Only once did I ever see my mild mannered, unassuming father get upset. One day, a young tough with long dreadlocks entered the restaurant and avariciously eyed the chain of hefty pushkas lined up on the counter. He stared at my father. My father stared at him. With one swift yank, the hoodlum pulled out the chain of pushkas. My father was a gentle soul, but this was intolerable. People placed their hard earned coins into these pushkas. No punk was going to steal money that rightfully belonged to various yeshivos! As the hoodlum turned to dash out of the store, Daddy grabbed on to the trailing chain with all his might. The thug was much younger, but my father was tenacious. The outcome, of course, was inevitable. Daddy was dragged down the street for a few moments, tightly gripping the chain. Eventually the chain snapped, and the hoodlum raced away. Bleeding and badly bruised, Daddy limped back to the store without the pushkas. Due to his poor blood circulation and terrible veins, it took weeks until his battered legs healed properly. All that happened many years ago. My parents eventually retired and moved to Yerushalayim, where for nearly twenty years, my mother enthusiastically filled up her numerous pushkas, while Daddy merited carrying their valuable contents to their rightful locations. Daddy died shortly before his 90th birthday due to complications of his poor leg circulation. He was the gentlest, kindest man I ever knew. But I’ll never forget the day he fought like a lion in defense of his precious pushkas. L’iluy Nishmas Avraham Ben Zvi

Model of the Cap Arcona
DEATH ON THE
BALTIC
A personal look at the “Cap Arcona” bombing which left thousands of Holocaust survivors dead at the hands of the British. JEREMY ELIAS

n May 3, 1945, thousands of prisoners were loaded onto ships in Lübeck Bay, off the northern coast of Germany. They had endured years of Nazi brutality and were within hours of Allied liberation and the end of a seemingly endless hell. Before that hour could arrive, more than 7,000 would be dead in one of the greatest maritime disasters of World War II. My grandfather was there. I’ve always known my

grandfather’s story. I can’t remember a particular time when he first sat me down and recounted it from beginning to end. So it’s as if I was born with a vague understanding of what happened, and the rest of my life was for filling in the details. I’m constantly filling in the details. And I’ll always be thankful for a grandfather who’s willing to let me. In 1941, at 15, Henry Bawnik was rounded up with others on the streets of the Lodz ghetto.
He would be leaving his family and the one place he knew. Scared and anxious, he looked around the group of unfortunate Jews. Through the panicked men and their barking tormentors, he saw David, an older neighborhood friend he’d always looked up to. David was the one familiar face in the newly assembled group. Thank G-d for David, my grandfather thought. David was beaten to death within hours. This was an unfamiliar world, and it wouldn’t be a kind one. From his year in the Lodz ghetto and some four years in the camps, there are countless stories. They are painted with senseless violence and inconceivable brutality. They are the kind that come from any victim who bears witness to the madness of men and lives with the burden and courage to speak about it. But the most prominent theme in all my grandfather’s accounts isn’t murder and destruction; it is hashgacha pratis. And never was hashgacha more imminent than that afternoon on the Baltic 65 years ago. In January 1945, as the Allies drew closer, my grandfather left Fürstengrube, a subcamp of Auschwitz, for Gleiwitz. It was the first leg of a death march north, continuously missing liberation by days, and sometimes by hours. In Gleiwitz, they boarded cattle cars. With the lack of food, space, and sanitation, the cars became boxes for the rotting corpses of starved and diseased prisoners. My grandfather and others began using these corpses as furniture – a couch, a mattress. Death
had been a daily occurrence. It wasn’t a tragedy, but an accepted inevitability. One day he too would be a couch or a mattress, and that was justification enough. After 10 days in the cattle cars, they arrived at Dora-Mittelbau. Each living prisoner dragged a dead body to a growing pile of skeletons. The indistinguishable men and women, with sunken cheeks and hollowed eyes, were thrown upon each other, a tangled mountain of death. The bodies were burned that night. In April, the Allies again drew closer, and once again my grandfather was forced to flee an approaching liberation. The Germans were running out of land. Soon there would be repercussions, and a light would shine on years of horror. They were not prepared for that, so they continued to march. Max Schmidt, a young SS officer and camp commander, loaded my grandfather and the 540 other prisoners onto barges to transport them up the Elbe River. With no camps left, he would take them to his
family’s estate in Ahrensbök, Germany. The area of northern Germany was becoming livelier. British bombers filled the sky as the prisoners lined up to be counted. Schmidt leaned back with his hands on his hips, slowly dipping his head to the sky. “Ich sehe schwarz,” he quietly said. “I see black.” But even Schmidt could not foresee the darkness to come. The night of May 2, the prisoners were awakened from their sleep to march once again. It wouldn’t be a long march; just to the coast. They’d finally run out of land. My grandfather and the 500 others were marching to the sea. When they reached Neustadt, the Cap Arcona sat idle, three kilometers off the sandy beaches of the harbor. The water was filled with U-boats, barges, and ships. The prisoners boarded a group of smaller boats waiting to take them to the Cap Arcona. They filed on in reverse alphabetical order, starting with “Z.” In its prime, the Cap Arcona was a beautiful ship, making voyages from South America to Germany for the

rich and famous. Coincidentally enough, it was used in a Joseph Goebbels propaganda film based on the Titanic, where the German protagonist prophetically warns of imminent danger ahead – proving his superior intellect. Now, the motor was completely shot. The ship served as a floating cell for the tortured. There was no more land for their labors, no more camps for their deaths. They were left to the sea, and a ship just fit to stay afloat. The small rafts, loaded with prisoners, inched toward the 213meter cruise liner. My grandfather wondered where they’d be going. Another camp, he supposed. It had always been that way. Wake up, move, and work to live one more day. But of course, even that was not certain. The only thing he did know was that the

The British preparing typhoons

Nazis weren’t going to tell him much, and if they did, it meant nothing. When the rafts got to the base of the Cap Arcona, the captain yelled down that no more prisoners would fit. They’d been loading the ship for more than a week. In the hull, thousands were packed like sardines – no windows, no air, just the swaying motion against the swell of the Baltic. The SS officer told the captain that loading the prisoners was an order, not an option. My grandfather was in one of the last groups to climb on board. He stood in the back of the boat, with hundreds of other striped prisoners roaming the deck. Below them were levels of cramped men and women, leaning on each other, fighting for air, fighting for everything. Their decrepit bodies filled the once extravagant banquet halls and living quarters. Henry wasn’t there more than two hours before the bombing started. British Typhoons were roaring through the sky, blasting everything in their path. It was a show, an extravagant display of power and force, fire and destruction. They’d hit the U-boats. My grandfather had a front-row seat, the air shaking from the blasts and the cold water of the Baltic exploding with each hit. The prisoners on deck were cheering. The pilots were ordered to bomb everything in their path, and they’d been doing so with precision and effectiveness. At 2:30 p.m., however, their paths crossed with the Cap Arcona. The first Typhoon flew overhead, only about 1,000 feet up. As it dove for the great ship, the bomb ripped the far end of the deck open. Men and women fell to the floor as the flames erupted. Prisoners screamed as the scene turned to utter chaos. They tried to put the flames out, but the fire hoses were cut. Soon came more Typhoons and more
direct hits. My grandfather looked down at the smoking floor. Screams of death and pain permeated the air. The stairwell from below, where thousands were being asphyxiated, reached the deck through a small door. People were fighting for fresh air, clawing to escape the coffin of smoke. Most were quickly consumed by the flames. He looked at the SS guard still on board. He was lost, the tormentor becoming the tortured. Two Russian POWs quickly tossed the guard overboard. Prisoners began taking their clothing off. They’d risk the 3-km. swim to shore. Most who tried were paralyzed by the 45ºF water. But those strong enough to bear the temperature would be gunned down by SS, Hitler Youth, naval personnel, and townspeople, all of whom were firing their guns from the sandy beaches of Neustadt. My grandfather couldn’t swim, but he took his clothes off anyway. Suddenly, the ship began to tilt on its side. Hundreds of men and women fell overboard. My grandfather ran to the high side of the ship and grabbed a rope. He looked down at the approaching water. He watched as the men and women sank into the sea – 200, 100, 50 left treading water. The approaching water was clear. Henry could see the prisoners descending to darkness, their bodies slowly fading out of sight. It wouldn’t be long until he reached the water and the same fate. He wasn’t scared. This was it. Fighting for each day for the last five years…it would all end in a minute or two. The exhaustion would be over; the struggle would finally end. The ship was almost completely capsized, the hull sticking up to the sky. My grandfather hit the cold water, the rope no longer serving its purpose.

As he prepared for the inevitable, a voice rang through the air: “Henry, Henry!” Like an angel from heaven, it was Peter Abramowitz, one of his closest friends from the camps. He was walking along the bottom of the ship,
had a chance to reflect. But with the German’s short and unexpected answer, he knew that’s what he had – time to reflect. And maybe he could fathom, for a moment, just how vulnerable his life had been.
message on. It was an oversight that led to the sinking of the Thielbek, the Deutschland, and the Cap Arcona. And with those three ships, more than 7,000 prisoners would lose their lives, never knowing just how close they came to liberation. Benjamin Jacobs, a prisoner whose story is almost identical to my grandfather’s, wrote the most comprehensive account of the Cap Arcona, The 100-Year Secret. Within that book, he writes, “Those who perished were not just prisoners. They were tough, tenacious, unrelenting fighters, with hearts stubborn enough to survive all the Nazis had cast upon them. And yet, they died on the very doorstep of freedom.” Sixty-five years later, the British government has never made any public reference to the event, denying the dead the recognition they deserve. The files were sealed until 100 years after the disaster, and so information that would bring the tragedy to the public eye is inaccessible until 2045. By then, all survivors and many of their children will be gone. And with their passing, a chest of personal memories, of when their friends died on the last page of the long and tragic epic, will be gone too. The onus will then be on us to tell their stories. We’ll tell about the “tough, tenacious, unrelenting fighters” who lost their lives at a time when the world went mad. And to prove we’ve learned since then, we’ll show that a human life should never go unrecognized and their deaths should never be forgotten. This is my grandfather’s story, and it is theirs as well. We should strive to make it ours.
THE BOMB RIPPED THE FAR END OF THE DECK OPEN. Bombing of the Cap Arcona
his clothing still on. He leaned over the side. “I’ll bring you up,” he said. Peter carried my grandfather on his back, the base of the ship too hot for bare skin. They walked to the partially submerged section, finally able to sit down. They looked around and counted: only 300 people left. In a matter of hours, their friends, who had been in the camps with them for at least three years, were at the bottom of the Baltic. On shore, the British had already seized control. They sent out Germans from the U-boat school to pick up the 350 survivors of the 4,500 on board. Three small tug boats pulled up to the Cap Arcona. “What camp are we going to now?” My grandfather instinctively asked. “No camp,” the German replied. “The war is over.” When telling this story, my grandfather always cries after uttering the German’s reply. Growing up, I assumed they were tears of happiness; after all, he was liberated. But they’re not. They’re very different tears, ones that I’ll never truly understand. Through his entire struggle, he never
When the survivors returned to shore, many of them unclothed, they fell into line like they had always done. The British officer was dumbfounded by the scene. “Where are your clothes?” he asked. They had none, hadn’t for years. So my grandfather, a free man, walked to an adjacent factory that had been abandoned in all the chaos. The only thing he could find was a green dress and a leather apron. It would have to do. And, still friends, he and Peter simply left. But that day would never be forgotten. The frequent question is why the British would bomb the Cap Arcona and the two other civilian ships. The answer is that the Allies were concerned that high-ranking SS officers were making an escape to Norway. The pilots were not aware of the ship’s true passengers. Ordered to bomb everything in their path, the British Typhoons would make an escape impossible. However, it has been documented that the British were informed of the ship’s cargo the previous day, but RAF personnel never passed the

Volcano Shutdown A universal crisis: millions of people stranded, billions of dollars lost, and one volcanic eruption in Iceland causes chaos across the European continent. Within all this tumult, one Jew merited a miracle from the Creator of the World, as if whispering to him: my son, the whole world was created especially for you – Bishvilcha nivrah haolam.

Hashem had a different plan for this young yeshiva student. Hashem caused a volcano to erupt in Iceland, which produced avalanches of hot ash, rock, and gas on Europe, which caused Europe to completely shut down its skies. No one could leave and no one could enter; a self-imposed no-fly zone. During this time, the young religious Yerushalmi man with the mortally diseased liver sat in the yeshiva in Brussels learning Torah. During the course of the airspace

As they advanced further on down the waiting list, they reached the young yeshiva student’s name. It was not offered to the boy, though, due to his lack of European citizenship. As the clock closed in on the deadline for the liver’s lifespan for transplanting, the precious healthy liver could not be wasted. It had to swiftly replace a diseased liver. The extent of this miracle was even greater after the successful liver transplant. The doctors said that the young yeshiva student’s liver was almost completely deteriorated and diseased and in a matter of days, his liver would have stopped functioning completely. The doctors unanimously believe that if this young man had to continue waiting for the liver transplant, he would have surely died. Naturally, there are those who would chalk this whole episode up to “coincidence,” but you and I know better.
