People Believe What They Want to Believe “And Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea, and HASHEM moved the sea with a strong eastern wind all the night, and He turned the sea to damp land and the water split.” — Shemos 14:21 Egypt, the country that bragged that no slave had ever escaped its land, stood by helplessly as the Chosen Nation triumphantly left. Yet even at this moment, Pharaoh sent spies along to follow them. After three days, his agents reported back that the Jews had veered off course. Pharaoh called out to his people, “Let us reclaim that which is ours,” and he led them in pursuit. When the Mitzrim arrived on the scene, the Jews were camped out against the Yam Suf. At that moment, the cloud of fire that led the Jews through the desert moved to the back of the camp and stopped the Egyptians from advancing. That entire night, both camps stood in their places, separated by the Clouds of Glory. The Ramban explains that during the night, an eastern wind began blowing. This was the wind that split the sea. At first, it made small indentations in the sea, but as the night wore on, the wind became stronger, and those small indentations grew in size and depth until the sea itself

was split into twelve distinct pathways – ready for each tribe to cross in its own channel. The Ramban explains that HASHEM split the sea with the wind “so that it would appear as if the wind split the sea into partitions.” Even though the wind can’t possibly split the sea, much less split it into twelve separate partitions, nevertheless, because of their great desire to harm the Jews, the Mitzrim “pegged it on a natural cause.” It was just the wind, nothing more. This Ramban is very difficult to understand. How could the Mitzrim possibly pin the splitting of the sea on the wind? They were intelligent, thinking people. They, as everyone else, clearly understood that this couldn’t be a natural occurrence. How is it possible that they accepted this sham – that the wind split the sea? Understanding free will The answer to this question is predicated upon understanding the concept of free will. Free will doesn’t mean the theoretical ability to do good or bad. It is the practical ability where either side is possible. When a person can just as easily turn to the bad as to the good, then it is his decision to choose. As an illustration, do you have free will to put your hand in a fire? In theory, you do. You could do it. But you never would. It is damaging. It is foolish. So, while in theory you have free will to do it, on a To advertise, call 718-513-9885
practical level, you don’t. Creating man Chazal (our sages) tell us that HASHEM created man to give him the opportunity to shape himself into what he would be for eternity. That molding of the person is accomplished by choosing what is good and proper and avoiding that which is wrong and evil. By making these choices, man forms himself. To create an even playing field, HASHEM took the sechel – that pure, brilliant part of me – and inserted it into a body filled with drives, passions, and hungers. Now the two parts of me are integrated. I don’t want only what is good and proper and noble. I also desire and hunger for many other things. My choice of doing only good is no longer so simple. However, if HASHEM created man only out of these two parts – the sechel and the guf – the purpose of creation would never have been met. The wisdom of man is so great that it would be almost impossible for him to sin. Since every sin damages me and every mitzvah makes me into a bigger, better person, my natural intelligence wouldn’t allow me to sin, no matter how tempted I might be. I would clearly recognize it as damaging to me. Much like putting my hand into a fire, in theory I would have free will to do it, but on a practical level, I wouldn’t. Imagination – its role and function Therefore, HASHEM added one

more component to the human: imagination. Imagination is the creative ability to form a mental picture and sense it so vividly, so graphically; it is as if it is real. Ask anyone who has ever cried while reading a novel whether imagination isn’t a powerful force. Now armed with this force, man can create fanciful worlds at his will and actually believe them. If man wishes to turn to evil, he can create rationales to make these ways sound noble and proper – at least enough to fool himself. If he wishes he can do what is right, or if he wishes, he can turn to wickedness, and even his brilliant intellect won’t prevent him. With imagination, he is capable of creating entire philosophies to explain how the behavior he desires is righteous, correct, and appropriate. Now man has free will. People believe what they want to believe The result of this is that people don’t believe that which is factual, proven and true; they believe what they want to believe. And, one of the greatest manifestations of this is the Egyptians following the Jews to their death. Despite living through the makkos, despite seeing the sea split into twelve sections, they didn’t believe it was a miracle. They attributed it to the wind because that is what they wanted to believe. We see a parallel to this in our day, when educated people claim that the world just evolved. No Creator. No Plan. No purpose. All of the complexity of this vast world just happened. You might wonder how anyone could be so blind. The answer is quite simple—I don’t want to accept G-d. If G-d exists then someone is in charge. If G-d exists then there are rules. Things I have to do, things I can’t do. That makes me uncomfortable. I am just much more at ease with denying the whole thing. For a person to see the truth, he must put away his bias and ask himself what do I honestly think? Forget the consequences. Forget my agenda. What does logic dictate? In that framework, a person will see the Creator as clear as day. However, if he doesn’t want to see the truth, nothing in the world will convince him, not the greatest miracles, and not even the splitting of the sea itself. He is capable of believing exactly what he wants to believe.

Eliminating Jealousy by Rabbi Aryeh Sampson
A 3-step process to uncover the source of jealousy and uproot it. If you’ve ever felt envious of another person’s good fortune or overshadowed by someone’s success, you’ll know how it can rob you of happiness. I’d like to share a unique approach for overcoming jealousy, called the ACTive Method, which is based on Jewish thought and psychotherapy. It views anxiety as a call to look within ourselves and express our authentic selves more deeply. At the method’s core is a three stage process of personal transformation which was taught by Rabbi Israel Salanter – these stages are Awareness, Control and Transformation. STAGE 1: AWARENESS The first stage requires us to become aware of our jealous thoughts and their source. The triggers of jealousy can range dramatically from person to person, but it frequently occurs when we consciously (or subconsciously) feel lacking; for
12
example, when suffering from personal hardships, such as a financial crisis or sickness. Unraveling the roots of jealousy may also involve understanding our own selfdefeating behaviors, for example being over-fearful, controlling or unmotivated. Often these behaviours result in us feeling stuck, dissatisfied or unproductive that make us prone to more envious feelings. STAGE 2: CONTROL After clarifying our jealous thoughts and their source, we move to the next step of controlling these feelings. We do this through our powers of thought, speech and action. Thought: Jealousy can arise from faulty thinking which distorts our perception of reality. As Rabbi Dessler explains, “Jealousy happens when we focus on a few moments of success in someone else’s life, and ignore To advertise, call 718-513-9885
their suffering.” Cognitive behavioural therapy teaches that it is not an actual event but our interpretation of it that causes our emotional response. By becoming aware of our cognitive biases (irrational thought patterns), we can change the way we think about a situation and thereby alter our emotional reaction to it. It is therefore important when feeling envy, to decide if we are looking at the situation in all or nothing terms, where we disqualify the positive that we have and magnify the good the other has. By challenging our initial view, we gain a more realistic understanding and reduce our jealousy. Speech: Sharing jealous thoughts and feelings confidentially with a supportive person can also help us see through our irrational thought. Sometimes, when we are going through a difficult time, the process of expressing these emotions can also bring

great relief. In other situations, when another person is doing something that makes us jealous, it can be helpful to speak to them directly about it to try to improve the situation. Action: Instead of trying to get more of what others have, we can use jealousy as a positive motivation to improve ourselves. The Talmud teaches, “Jealousy between rabbis increases wisdom.” When the sages felt jealous of each other’s spiritual attainments, they used it to motivate themselves to study more and to become wiser. When we are jealous of others, we can use it as an incentive to better ourselves – we thereby become more fulfilled within ourselves and consequently less jealous. STAGE 3: TRANSFORMATION In this stage, we go beyond reducing our jealousy to changing our nature so that we no longer begin to feel jealous in the first place. How can we accomplish this? We need to eliminate the self-destructive traits (e.g., laziness, lack of confidence) which are at the root of the jealousy and replace these with positive traits. This is achieved through repeating positive actions until new habits are formed. At the end of the Cain and Abel episode, Hashem placed a mark on Cain and made him a wanderer. There is an opinion that this “mark” was a gift of a dog. The reason Cain was given a dog was to help him learn the true nature of giving and gratitude, as dogs have a giving and loyal nature. This was the trait Cain needed to internalize in order to overcome his selfish and jealous nature.
14
When a person repeats acts of giving, over time he will become a more generous person. He will uproot the jealousy and free himself from it. He will then start to experience joy for the good fortune of others, instead of letting it diminish his happiness and create animosity. A beautiful example of this level is described when Moses was chosen to lead the Jewish people out of Egypt. His brother Aaron could have easily felt overshadowed and been jealous of him. But Aaron is described as having “joy in his heart”; he was truly happy for his brother. Hashem’s appointment of Moses only increased Aaron’s love for him. We too can find a new sense of joy and closeness to others when we transform jealousy from a troublesome emotion into a positive force. This excerpt is from Rabbi Sampson’s new book, Go to Yourself.

Cleaning Our Hearts for Passover by David Sacks
Let’s focus on two qualities that make the biggest messes: anger and jealousy. How do I clean my heart of those?
C
leaning the house for Passover is an opportunity to do a tremendous soul cleansing as well. On a spiritual level, bread products, or chametz, represents our negativity, or our yetzer harahs, those aspects of ourselves that we’d love to get rid of. Maybe on a deeper level that’s what’s so difficult about cleaning for Passover. Doing so requires us to come face to face with our chametz, our shortcomings. And really… who wants to do that? Aspects of ourselves that we’ve grown comfortable with suddenly get exposed as the enemy. Muffins? Laziness. Cake? Lust. Cookies? Greed. Well, not exactly, but you get the idea. Cleaning for Passover has two parts. The first comes in the days or weeks leading up to the holiday. That’s the “normal” part of the
18
cleaning process, and most likely takes place during the daylight hours. But then things get, well… interesting. When the night before Passover arrives (the 14th of Nissan) we turn off the lights, light a candle, and finish off the process of getting rid of our chametz. This is when the “inside” cleaning begins. The Talmud describes this process in the most interesting way. It says that we do the cleaning by “the light of the 14th of Nissan”. This is strange since it’s very clear that we do this cleaning at nighttime! Why then this language “by the light of the 14th” if it’s night? Let me try to explain. When Moses walked toward the burning bush to investigate the wonder he was seeing, Hashem said, “Take off your shoes because you are standing on holy To advertise, call 718-513-9885
ground.” T h e question is, why didn’t Hashem tell Moses to take off his shoes before he stepped on the holy ground? Rabbi Mattisyahu Solomon said because the ground wasn’t holy yet. What made it holy was Moses wanting to investigate the phenomenon and learn more about Hashem. This then is the light of the night of the 14th. It’s more than a candle. It’s the light your soul generates by your desire to become better. You can see this is in the Hebrew word for candle, ner. It’s spelled with the Hebrew letters nun raish. Our holy Rabbis teach that the nun stands for neshama, and the raish stands for ruach, two parts of our soul. From this we see clearly that the light of the candle is the light of the soul. According to Jewish law, we must use a candle (or today a flashlight is also good) but not a torch. Why? Because if we see too much of our own imperfection we’ll freak out and get depressed. There’s too much to fix! When it comes to this inside
Where Taste Meets Elegance
cleaning, we take one step at a time. In fact, one of the most amazing customs is that when we do find chametz (remember that stands for the evil inclination) we sweep it away with a feather. A feather of all things! Do you see the beauty of this? Our Sages are teaching us that when you go into those dark places within yourself, don’t forget to be gentle. How do we start? The truth is that cleansing the heart is a lifelong process. But Passover is a time of Divine favor, and all the gates of heaven are open now. So let’s focus on two qualities that make the biggest messes: Anger and jealousy. How do I clean my heart of those? The first step is to acknowledge the difficulty of the process. Once that’s done… Now we can begin. Fixing anger begins with understanding that everything comes from Hashem, both the good and the challenging. When I get angry and blame other people for things, I attribute a power to them that they simply don’t have. This is why the Talmud compares anger to idol worship. Big stuff. It doesn’t mean that the person who brought the pain into my life is blameless. It just means that they aren’t the ultimate source. If I want to clean my heart of anger, it begins with my looking Above, and understanding that there is no power other than Hashem. What about jealousy? How do I clean my heart of that? By knowing that Hashem never runs out of blessings. Whatever you need there is plenty more of it in heaven. The more we realize Hashem can do anything, the more we come to understand that the person I’m jealous of didn’t take my portion. Didn’t marry my soul mate. Didn’t give birth to my child. When we really believe this, and we’re secure in the knowledge that there is plenty more available of whatever I need, if Hashem wants it for me, then I can at last take joy in other people’s joy – and not feel like their happiness is coming at my expense. If all this seems like a big job, remember the words of one of our greatest teachers, Rabbi Israel Salanter. He said that the loudest sound in the world is the sound of a habit being broken. He also famously said that it’s easier to learn the entire Talmud than it is to eradicate one bad character trait. It’s hard. But so worth it. Because when we fix our hearts, we fix the entire world.

5 Things to Do to Beat the PrePassover Blues by Sharon Langert
Stressed out? Here’s what you need to do.
W
ith Passover less than a week away, it’s quite possible that we may be feeling... just a little stressed out, which can sometimes bring on a major case of pre-holiday blues. Fortunately, I’ve been doing the Yom Tov thing for a long time and have a few recommendations for keeping your sanity...not that I guarantee that I always use them or actually maintain my own sanity. But if we have a few tools in our back pocket, we may actually remember to grasp for them when the going gets tough and we’re faced with those ‘breaking point’ moments. Here are five important things to do to help you combat those pre-holiday blues: 1. Get enough sleep. Hahaha! That doesn’t sound very realistic when we have so much to do, and it’s easy to just get lost in time and merrily cook and clean all through the night. I know, it sounds weirdly romantic...but, no. Just no.
26
The truth is that you will be much more effective if you just shut everything down, including yourself, and go to sleep. Now, this may take a seriously concentrated effort and a lot of selfcontrol, but trust me, it’s worth it. If your mind is racing and you’re worried about all you have to do, make a neat new list for the next day, and in the morning you will not believe how much more you can accomplish than you could while running on empty and falling apart. When the day is over, it’s over. Forget about it for a few hours and go to sleep. 2. Exercise. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 20 minute walk or a 5 mile run, just make sure you get out there and move your body. Yes we know that bending down to put a load in or vacuuming under mattresses is also exercise. But it’s not a specific time that’s carved out for you to meditate in the healthy movement of your body. We are all about to enter into a zone of abundant consumption of high fat and high sugar food over an extended period of time, so To advertise, call 718-513-9885
prime your body, get your metabolism revving, and allow the endorphins to make you a little happier. 3. Focus on gratitude. It’s very easy to feel resentful when it seems you’re doing everything for everyone else, all by yourself. Clearly you should allow others to help you (I personally have a huge issue allowing people to help me, and then end up complaining about doing everything myself. Ask for and accept help!) But even so, when things get overwhelming it’s good to just stop and refocus. This is a good time to take a walk or a workout break, or just simply lock yourself in the bathroom for 5 minutes. Then consciously think about all your blessings: your family, kids, money (or at least the credit card you don’t have to deal with today), your house, and even your strength, fortitude, and talent to do it all. Thank Hashem and then thank yourself. Tell yourself how awesome you are! When you stop the complaining (even in your head) and reverse your thought

process towards gratitude, it makes a huge difference in how you feel, and the energy you emit to your family will be more positive. And that will come back to you. Gratitude can be extremely strengthening for yourself and your family connections. 4. Connect with friends. As long as your friends aren’t competitive foodies who like to show off their freezer(s) full of Pesach goodies, and they’re slightly as stressed or bluesy as you are, then make sure to carve out time to see them. Admitting that you don’t always love Yom Tov prepping and feel immensely guilty and inadequate about it, and then finding out that you’re not alone, can be extremely therapeutic. Even a 1/2 hour corroborating with likeminded women over warm coffee (and whipped cream!) can alleviate a huge load of stress. 5. Connect to Hashem. Try to realize WHY we’re doing all of this work in the first place: Because He saved us. And He’s still saving us, and we are grateful. In those moments when our thoughts and energy aren’t feeling positive, talking to G-d can really help. Just ask Him to help and strengthen you, and know that He created imperfection and that you’re good enough just by the fact that you exist. Here are some of my personal Passover survival tips that I’ve learned to be okay with over the years: 1. I don’t compete. I’m really great at a lot of things but I don’t have to be great at everything. And I certainly don’t have to do exactly what everyone seems to be doing.
28
Connect to Hashem. Try to realize WHY we’re doing all of this work in the first place: Because He saved us. And He’s still saving us, and we are grateful. In those moments 2. I don’t participate in the frenzy. It seems like everyone’s running around crazed the minute Purim is over. My attitude is that I’ll be busy right before

Yom Tov anyway so why extend the craziness before I really have to. I watch the frenzy from afar and maybe I’ll write up a menu and shopping list over coffee a week and a half or so before Yom Tov. 3. I clean according to Jewish law. Learn the laws and you will relax immediately. For example, you are not responsible for the crumbs the size of a molecule embedded in your sofa. You do not have to remove every book from the shelves and vacuum every page. Learn the laws and delegate jobs. 4. I don’t bake on Pesach. With the exception of one bowl brownies or cake mixes, I can proudly say that my desserts consist of fresh fruit, ices, or brownies with ice cream. Or we skip dessert completely. I’ve never whipped an egg white for a Pesach cake, and no one in my home has ever felt deprived. 5. I avoid almost anything that requires a food processor. Besides for the requisite potato kugels, there’s no reason why a yom tov meal can’t consist of fresh chicken, good meats, roasted veggies, and fresh salads. Kugels shmugels...they mostly feed the garbage can anyway. 6. I expect imperfection. No matter how you slice it, family time can get intense. Instead of worrying about what can go wrong, I expect things to go wrong. Then I can laugh about them, or at least deal without drama. Sending you all lots of positive energy and love and wishing you a beautiful, warm, redeeming Chag Kasher V’Sameach!!

BlamingJews for Snow by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller
Just in time for the historical season of blood libels.
W
hen Trayon White, a 33-year-old up and coming Washington DC City Council member, drove through a recent snow flurry, he decided to let everyone know just what he thought was behind the sudden snow storm: he blamed Jews. Steering his car through the city streets, White filmed himself musing, “Man, it just started snowing out of nowhere this morning, man” and, bizarrely, went on to blame a prominent Jewish banking family for the snow: “...that’s a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful.” He then posted his rambling speech on Facebook. As astonished critics called on White to apologize, he initially defended his outrageous statements before posting an apology on social media a few hours later. “I work hard every day to combat racism and prejudices of all kinds. I want to apologize to the Jewish community and anyone I have offended….I did not intend to be anti-Semitic…” This wasn’t the first time White blamed Jews for natural events. He

tried to link the Rothschild family to a Washington DC office charged with responding to emergencies such as severe storms at a meeting with the District’s mayor last month. Startlingly, White doesn’t seem to be the only one peddling these kooky theories about Jews. The Washington Post noted that fringe conspiracy theorists have been peddling the outrageously false claim that Jews are responsible for climate change for some time. As far back as 2010, the Southern Poverty Law Center noted that neo-Nazis were beginning to blame Jews for climate change; increasingly, this bogus claim seems to have gained even more followers in the years since. While it seems incredible that anyone would blame Jews for snow, there are

plenty of Americans who hold extremely negative views about Jews. The AntiDefamation League (ADL) notes that in 2016, fully 20% of Americans polled agreed with statements that Jews controlled Wall Street and had too much power in business. 16% agreed that Jews have “too much power” in America. Among minorities, the numbers were even higher. 31% of foreign-born Hispanics held strongly anti-Jewish views in 2016, as did 23% of African Americans. And a 2009 ADL poll found that 31% of Europeans blamed Israel for the financial crisis that year. It’s ironic that Councilman White’s idiotic, offensive and utterly false comments about Jews occurred in the run-up to Passover, a common time throughout history to smear Jews with the infamous blood libel. Nearly a thousand years ago, at Passover time in 1144, a young boy named William was found murdered in the English town of Norwich. Even though there was no evidence, a local monk baselessly blamed Jews and falsely claimed that Jews selected an innocent Christian child each year to ritually murder. At first, few people paid any attention to this gory fabrication, but

the monk kept embroidering his telling, adding more and more gruesome details. In time, some Christians began venerating the murdered boy, who was eventually canonized as a Saint. Local Jews, already viewed with suspicion by their Christian neighbors, were blamed for his death, and Jews were seen as uniquely evil, bent on causing unimaginable harm. The untrue libel ultimately spread that Jews supposedly murdered Christian children in order to use their blood on Passover, either by drinking it during the Passover Seder or by using it as a key ingredient in matzah. Jews across Europe were blamed for the death of Christian children. Often, local officials tortured Jews into falsely confessing these crimes. At times, Jewish communities were massacred in retaliation for supposed ritual murders before Passover. Over a hundred blood libels resulted in thousands of deaths of European Jews throughout the Middle Ages. As recently as 1913, Russia tried Mendel Beilis, a Jewish father of five, accusing him of ritually murdering a boy and using his blood to bake matzah. Allegations of blood libels continue to be repeated today. Prominent political

The untrue libel ultimately spread that Jews supposedly murdered Christian children in order to use their blood and cultural figures in parts of the Arab world routinely accuse Jews of killing children for Passover, and a couple of popular made-for-TV dramas in recent years have featured blood libels. The wildly popular Syrian-made series AlShatat even features a graphic depiction ritual murder by supposedly venal Jews wishing to make Passover matzah. The series has been shown repeatedly, since it was made in 2002, in Syria, Iran, Libya and Jordan, and remains a well-liked series throughout the Arabic-speaking world. In the West, the traditional blood libel

has modified, leading to baseless charges that Jews somehow want to control or harm others. In 2009, the Swedish magazine Aftonbladet echoed classic blood libel smears when it falsely claimed that Israel harvested organs from dead Palestinians. The following year when an earthquake devastated Haiti, a member of Britain’s House of Lords baselessly demanded an inquiry to see whether Israeli rescue workers were using the disaster as cover to harvest organs in Haiti. Councilman White’s inane speculation that Jews caused it to snow is being mocked across social media. Amid the ridicule, it’s important that we not lose sight that his hare-brained comments likely would not have occurred were it not for a fertile environment of anti-Semitic theories and hatred. As we prepare to celebrate Passover, it’s imperative we remember the smears and false allegations, the hatred and ire stirred up by hundreds of years of blood libels. It’s vital that we stand up to Jew-hatred wherever it occurs, that we help stop modern blood libels of supposed Jewish evil or control, whenever we hear them today.
