Earning a Living Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult Parshas Chukas “And Hashem said to Moshe and Aharon, ‘Because you did not believe in Me to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore, you will not bring this congregation to the land that I have given them.’” — Bamidbar 20:12 The be’er disappeared when Miriam died For almost forty years while the Jews were traveling in the desert, their source of water was the be’er, well, a large rock that provided the water they needed to survive. The Jewish nation then consisted of about three million people. They had also taken many animals with them when they went out of Mitzrayim, so they required millions of gallons of water each day. The be’er provided all they needed and more.
4
When Miriam died, the rock disappeared, and Klal Yisroel, the Jews recognized that their survival was in jeopardy. Hashem told Moshe Rabbeinu, our teacher to go out into the desert, speak to the rock, and bring the water back. When Moshe and Aharon went to the rock, they spoke to it and received no response. Moshe then assumed that just as it was necessary to hit the rock when the Jews first went out into the desert, so too now. When he hit the rock, it began pouring forth water. Later, Hashem told Moshe and Aaron that they had erred. Hashem told them to speak to the rock, and it was through the power of speech that the miracle was to come about. On some level, they were lacking in their trust in Hashem, and this caused them to miscalculate. Had they been more complete in their trust, they would have used words alone, and the rock would have provided the water. Rashi tells us that because of this mistake, the Jewish people lost out on a great lesson. Had Moshe only spoken to the rock, the Jews would have said to themselves, “A rock doesn’t require sustenance, yet it listens to the word of Hashem; surely, we, who rely on Hashem for parnassa, livelihood must listen to Him.” However, since Moshe hit the rock instead of speaking to it, that lesson was lost. Rashi seems to be saying that if Moshe

had spoken to the rock, the Jewish people would have increased their level of service to Hashem. They would have realized that their livelihood was dependent upon their doing mitzvahs, and this would have added focus and precision in the way that they fulfilled them.
Reward for mitzvahs isn’t in this world
There are two problems with understanding this Rashi. One is that the Gemara tells us that the reward for mitzvahs is not in this world. While it is true that Hashem rewards every good a person does, the place of that reward is in the World to Come. In fact, it is considered a curse to use up your payment in this world – something that is reserved for wicked people. So it doesn’t seem to be correct that their livelihood was dependent upon listening to Hashem. The second problem with this Rashi is that any motivational system must be tailored to fit the audience. The people of this generation received the Torah on Har Sinai. They spent almost forty years surrounded by the Clouds of Glory, completely immersed in Torah study, and sustained by the mon, manna. They were on the highest madreigah, level of any generation in history. So even if their parnassa was dependent upon their listening, how

would they be motivated by something so mundane as earning their daily bread?
Obstacles that prevent us from serving Hashem
The answer to this question is based on understanding the Rambam (in Hilchos Tshuvah, Perek 9). He explains that even though we don’t receive reward for doing mitzvahs in this world, if a person keeps the Torah properly, then Hashem will remove all of the obstacles that normally prevent a person from keeping the mitzvahs. Sickness, war, poverty, and hunger prevent a person from learning or fulfilling the mitzvahs, commandments. If a person is happy and dedicates himself to keeping the Torah, Hashem will shower him with all of the requirements to better serve Him, including peace, tranquility, well-being, sustenance, and all else that a person needs to follow the Torah. The Rambam is telling us that since Hashem created the world in order to have man follow the Torah, when a person uses the world properly, then Hashem allows him to have his needs met in this world without strain. This will help him better serve Hashem. Hashem was telling Moshe and Aharon that this lesson would have greatly affected the generation of the desert, but it was lost. Had the people seen the rock obeying Hashem’s command, they would have been moved to a powerful realization: “The rock doesn’t have needs, yet it listens to Hashem. How much more so should we, who have so many needs? Hashem has
PLANING A SHABBATON UPSTATE?
promised that if we follow in his ways, He will remove all obstacles from our path. But if we don’t listen. . .” That was a lesson that would have affected even this generation because their very survival depended on it. While people may have many lofty motives, one of our strongest drives is self-preservation. Had that generation come to a more clear recognition that their existence was dependent upon keeping the Torah, it would have changed even their appreciation — but it was a lesson lost.
Earning a living isn’t easy
The concept that Hashem takes care of our needs when we use our lives properly can be a great source of motivation. Earning a living isn’t easy. Market economies rise and fall. Entire industries come and go. Careers that are in high demand in one decade are outsourced and sent overseas the next. Financial security in an ever-changing world is fragile at best.
While our main motivation to keep the Torah is that Hashem commanded us to do it for our benefit in the World to Come, the reality is that we live in this world. We have bills to pay, children to put through school, and many, many financial obligations. Knowing that Hashem will remove the obstacles standing in our way, as long as we dedicate ourselves to passionately keeping the Torah, can be a great impetus to growth. This is not to say that life will be a bed of roses. There will still be nisyonos, life tests and different settings that we need for various reasons. However, the basic starting position is that Hashem will take care of my needs so that I can better serve Him. That understanding can aid us to focus on our true purpose in this world and allow us a much greater degree of success in all of our endeavors.

The Last Surviving Flight Crew Member who Saved Yemenite Jews in 1949 by Oren Peleg and JNS.org
Capt. Elgen Long, a 90-year-old from Oregon, was recently honored as a “hero of Israel and the Jewish people.”

ith city lights dotting the night behind her, Dr. Dee Gaines, a neuropsychologist, sat for good reason – she’s very pregnant. But when Capt. Elgen Long, the last surviving member of a commercial flight crew that saved nearly 2,000 Jewish refugees stranded in Yemen almost 70 years ago, finished his speech, she felt compelled to stand. Her voice shook with emotion behind a microphone handed to her. “My great-grandmother and my grandmother were on those planes. In Yemen, they couldn’t read. They couldn’t receive an education. Now, here I am, a doctor who has pursued higher education.

And, because of you,” she said, rubbing her belly, “a fifth generation lives on.” Snow-haired and perpetually mistyeyed, Long, who turns 91 in August, bowed his head graciously in reply from a podium. Nearly 100 guests seated at tables applauded roundly in the backyard of a private home in Beverly Hills, Calif. The event organized by the nonprofit, pro-Israel education group StandWithUs for its prominent donors took place on May 30 and honored Long, who, thought not Jewish, was introduced as a “hero of Israel and the Jewish people.” Long, a native of Oregon, told guests that returning to the City of Angels – a place he knows well from his past – To advertise, call 718-513-9885
was a privilege. After serving as a U.S. naval officer during the Second World War, Long attended the University of California, Los Angeles, on the G.I. bill. While in school, his part-time job was delivering telegrams door-to-door, often to movie stars, in the Beverly Hills area. “Now, to be back here more than 70 years later is incredible. It feels like my life has come full circle,” he said. “I can’t believe I’m here as an honored guest.”
‘We just kept going’
Long’s brush with fate happened while working as a commercial-flight navigator for Alaska Airlines in the late 1940s. During a stop in Shanghai in January of

JNS. “But, in the end, it turned out to be much more important than we thought it would be.” During his remarks, Long outlined the details of how his crew saved 1,800 refugees – a prospect that seemed dim when their DC-4 aircraft touched To advertise, call 718-513-9885
down in Aden. With only 48 seats on board and thousands of starving Yemenite Jews camped out on and around the base, Long’s crew got creative in the face of a “life and death situation.” “One of our mechanics suggested taking out the seats on the aircraft,” he said. “If we did that, he told us, we could fit about 150 people on the plane sitting on the floor. We originated that idea, I’m fairly certain.” After receiving permission from the head rabbi of Yemen to take off on the Sabbath, Long and his crew began making runs to Israel delivering batches of refugees. Their route, which called for a 20-hour flight day, was complicated by the inability to access air space over Arab lands. Upon landing in Tel Aviv, they turned right around, completing seven days of nonstop back-and-forth transport. “We slept very little, taking shifts and stealing naps when we could,” he told JNS. “Eventually, we didn’t look or smell too good from the experience. But we just kept going.” Finally, they rested for one day. After a decent night of sleep, they made five more runs, clocking 12 trips in total. While unloading passengers in Tel Aviv, Long still remembers the reception his crew received from Israeli military personnel. “I’ll always recall one young Israeli officer who came on board, looked at us and told us, ‘You’ve done a great thing,’ ” recalled Long. “I can still see him, still hear him saying those words to us when I close my eyes and think real hard.” “On Eagle’s Wings,” which also goes by the name “Operation Magic Carpet,” saved nearly 50,000 Yemenite Jews who have more than 750,000 descendants, including Gaines and her family.

1949, his crew received a telegram from company heads issuing instructions to make for a British Royal Air Force base in Aden, a port city in Yemen. There, his crew took part in a daring rescue mission that would come to be known as “On Eagle’s Wings” – a reference to Exodus 19:4 – to help airlift tens of thousands of Yemenite Jews facing persecution and death out of Yemen and into Israel, a nation less than a year old at the time. “For us, it was a job,” Long told

‘The mystery of the man’ Another one of those descendants, Shahar Azani, a 41-year-old StandWithUs employee whose grandparents escaped Yemen, came across Long’s story while visiting an exhibit at a Jewish museum in Anchorage, Alaska, showcasing the role of Long’s flight crew in the rescue. Azani came across a copy of On Eagles Wings: The Untold Story of the Magic Carpet, a book Long wrote on his experience. “I knew then and there that I had to meet this man,” he said. When Azani first tried to get in contact with Long several years ago to arrange a meeting and begin the process of honoring him, Long’s family members informed Azani that the 90-year-old was “out at sea.” He was on a crew searching for the remains of Amelia Earhart, which Azani told guests “added to the mystery of the man.” Last fall, Azani and StandWithUs organized a trip for Long to return to Israel and tour the country he hadn’t seen since 1949. Over the course of a 10-day trip, Long told JNS that he marveled at the innovative nation that “he could barely recognize” from nearly seven decades ago.
“I remember when there was just an airfield,” he said. “Now it’s Ben-Gurion International Airport, where millions of people come through. And everywhere we went, there was so much being built. Israel is an amazing place.” Azani said that in Israel, trip organizers offered Long meetings with high-ranking politicians, awards and appreciation ceremonies. But he had only one thing on his mind. “He just wanted to see how the Yemenites he helped save were doing,” he said. “He kept asking, ‘How are they doing? How are their lives here? How are their children?’ I’m so happy I got to be with him when we made that happen. They don’t make them like him anymore.” Reuniting with members of the Yemenite-Israeli community that he helped rescue was a joyous occasion for Long, but one in which he couldn’t help but think of his fellow crew members who didn’t live to see it. “That was one of the best moments of my life,” Long told JNS. “But everything that happened to me, I can’t take credit for. It was my entire crew and me, and I wish they could’ve been there. There’s a
certain serendipity to it all – that a guy from a small town on the Oregon coast experienced all of this.”

Hello dear friend!
My Bike Got Stolen by Joshua Church

Something happened to me the other day that I wanted to share. My bike got stolen. My brand new triathlon bike that I got a couple months ago. My several thousand dollar bike that I had worked hard to save up for. I had it locked up to the bike rack on the back of my car parked in a high school parking lot. In the hour that I was playing basketball in the gym, someone came and cut the lock and stole the bike. Why did this happen to me?! As I stood there in disbelief at the back of my car, I felt awful. My heart dropped in disbelief and the negative thoughts started racing through my head... What kind of lowlife would do that? I was planning on riding with my friends this weekend – there goes my plans! Now I have to go through the hassle of getting a new bike and all the time, effort, and expenses that goes into it This sucks! But I worked so hard to save up for it... What a bummer. Before I gave fuel to these thoughts gaining dangerous speed, I caught myself. I’m a firm believer that things don’t happen to you, they happen FOR you. It’s a belief that I’ve worked hard to condition daily through mindset work – focusing on consciously letting go of old thought patterns, affirming new ones, and spending time in gratitude and reflection. Every seemingly bad event that’s happened in my life always has some silver lining. Not only have I gotten good at looking for the silver lining now, it’s become habit. I keep a spool of silver thread in my pocket and weave it myself. Why? Because with everything that happens that is seemingly negative at first, there’s ALWAYS a nugget of wisdom, a gem of gold, an opportunity to grow, a challenge to rise to, suffering to overcome, a time to trust the process, a chance to practice a higher vibration, a frame to switch up, a perspective to elevate. So as I stood there in the dark, looking at the cut cable and my empty bike rack, the knot in the pit of my stomach began to release. No need to dwell on it now, the bike is gone – out of my control. What’s

Why? Because with everything that happens that is seemingly negative at first, there’s ALWAYS a nugget of wisdom, a gem of gold, an opportunity to grow, in my control is the way I feel about the situation and the thoughts I think that dictate my feelings. How can I respond to this event in a way that actually makes me feel good? And just like that the starting pistol of a new race fired off.

So let’s start this email over again from the top with and re-frame and slightly different perspective. Hello dear friend! Something happened FOR me the other day that I had to share. My bike got stolen. Why did this happen to me?! What kind of lowlife would do that? I feel genuinely sad for whoever is living in such a place of desperation that led them to do such a thing. What if they were in a life or death situation and I was able to give them life? Might be a stretch, but I’ll take it! I was planning on riding with my friends this weekend – there goes my plans! Well, I clearly wasn’t supposed to be riding this weekend...Who knows what could have happened on that ride, what if this actually saved my life? Now I have to go through the hassle of getting a new bike and all the time, effort, and expenses that goes into it My entire life will forever be different. My direction is completely changed. Who or what is waiting for me at the bike shop when I go get another bike? What conversations or insights will I have in line at the cafe next door to the coffee shop that I otherwise wouldn’t be To advertise, call 718-513-9885
at? Future wife – is that you?! This sucks! I know for a fact that I will NOT remember this on my death bed at the end of my life, so why stress it now? It’s all just material stuff anyway... But I worked so hard to save up for it... I know exactly what I have to do to get another one now and that I’m more than capable! What a bummer. What a first world problem! How lucky am I, that THIS is a “bummer” in my life? My body is physically healthy and able to bike in the first place. In a world where 3 out of 5 people don’t have access to clean drinking water and sanitation, how fortunate am I? What a great opportunity for me to reflect on all that I DO have and all that I am grateful for. Maybe I’ll share this experience and inspire others... So THAT’S why it happened! As Abe Lincoln so beautifully said, “We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” With every event that happens, there’s simply two ways we can look at it. I choose to see the beauty of the roses blossoming amidst the prickly thorns. I choose to see and deeply BELIEVE that my bike getting stolen actually saved my life and perhaps the life of someone else. I choose to ask myself “why did this happen to me?” and find the purpose behind it – the meaning, the takeaway. Life is my teacher and I’m that one passionate student eagerly at the edge of my seat waiting for the next lesson (if only I were this person in actual school). The glass isn’t half empty or half full. The glass is always full, even if it’s full with air ;) I’d challenge you to take a quick moment of reflection to ask yourself – what was something seemingly bad that happened that actually led to something good? What’s a coincidence that led to something beautiful or meaningful? Go smell those beautiful roses. With Love, Joshua Please pray for the recovery of my grandmother Rachel bat Hanina
Over-Zealous Parenting is Harming our Children by Slovie Jungreis-Wolff
How to raise independent kids in today ‘s world.
O
ne of my favorite childhood memories is riding my bike Sunday afternoons and peddling through the sidewalks of North Woodmere. I lived in a quiet suburban community with open spaces, shady trees and lots of winding roads. These were the days before Amber Alerts, 9-11, constant after school programs and hours spent texting or checking out social media on your phone. We kids loved to be free and explore our world. Today’s children are growing up in a totally different environment. It can be stifling. Andrea Petersen’s recent article, “The Overprotected American Child”, in the Wall Street Journal laments the lack of independence in our children today. Fewer kids walk to school on their own. Parents have been charged with neglect when they allowed their sons and daughters to play or walk unsupervised. As a result psychologists are seeing more children and young adults with anxiety
24
disorders. “Over-zealous parenting can do real harm,” Petersen writes. The connection between anxiety and lack of independence is strong. Studies show that the more autonomy given, the less anxiety exhibited. When we encase our children in bubble wrap, we mistakenly believe that we are safeguarding them for life. In reality, we are making them even more anxious. Overprotecting children doesn’t shield them from harm. Instead, it conveys the message that the world is frightening and dangerous. Children feel ill equipped to handle stress. They remain over dependent on mom and dad, seeking their solutions instead of finding their own as they grow. When decisions need to be made, they doubt themselves because parents have always stepped in. We don’t want our children to be scared of life. We want them to become self-sufficient, self-reliant, and selfassured. Yes we need to deal with the reality of the world today. There are some really

bad stories out there. Parents need to have a sense of safety and awareness and guide their children accordingly. Different cultures and different neighborhoods bring different rules. I recall being astounded when visiting my daughter in Israel and seeing young children running errands for their mothers at the local supermarket. But that does not mean that just because you live in a more guarded society, your children cannot find their own spirit of independence. The question is: how? First, examine if you are doing for your children that which they can do for themselves. Parents struggle with time crunch, pressure, and tight schedules. We don’t want to deal with tantrums and explosive outbursts. It becomes easier to just handle the task ourselves. We let our children off easy. If you’d like to teach your child independence, begin with age appropriate skills they can learn in the home. Don’t rush to put their things away, solve their situations, or serve their meals and

prepare their lunches and snacks. Even young children can clear their plates, prepare knapsacks for the next morning or put dirty clothing in a hamper. More than chores, these are ways we allow children to master moments that lead to feelings of self-sufficiency. As children grow they can be involved in their food prep and even cooking with a parent’s watchful eye. Teaching safety and techniques allows for self-reliance instead of greater expectations for parents to do it all. The result is self-confidence and self-esteem, not based on empty praise, but because they, themselves, see how they are naturally growing into capable and competent young adults. Independence outside our home is more difficult to achieve but it is possible. Again, it is up to a parent’s wisdom and discretion. Besides thinking about how to navigate street crossings, mall outings and venturing outdoors, here are some guidelines for parents to keep in mind: Provide clear rules and understandings about curfews, distances, what to do when feeling lost or unsafe and expected responsibilities. Speak about consequences if rules and responsibilities are not followed Teach children to own their behavior. Explain: You are responsible for your mistakes, causing harm, damage, and bad behavior. If you hurt others you need to make amends. Don’t make excuses or seek to blame others. It’s not about who else did it, who pushed you to do it, or somehow everyone else’s fault but yours. Be accountable. Allow children to overcome fears, take risks and gain courage. For example, talk together about how shyness can be conquered in small steps, or seek solutions instead of remaining frightened of dogs or heights. Empower your child. Realize that we cannot manipulate our children’s friendships, sleepover

invitations and social lives. Yes, when they are small we can help with playdates. That stops early on, though, and then our children need to navigate on their own. We can try to guide them, help them recognize the meaning of true friendship and open our homes and hearts. Ultimately we hope that they make good choices because we have taught them well. Guide children to help and do for themselves. They can fulfill their needs and requirements without expecting parents to come to the rescue. One gym teacher told me that I cannot imagine the amount of students who blame their moms for not packing their sneakers. Making Changes If you desire to bring more independence to your child’s life, begin with these 5 steps: Communicate that you would like to see more self-reliance. Say something positive like “Now that you are in middle school, you can….” And be clear about responsibilities. Give a sense of time. Show through clocks, watches, and phone alarms that children can stick to a schedule and learn how to appropriately balance their time. Acceptance: Don’t get stuck on perfection. Recognize efforts and then work on bettering skills. Begin with the good. If your son dressed himself, recognize that before mentioning that his shirt is on backwards. Energize instead of criticize. Teach solution skills. No matter the age, you will find your child struggling with something. Don’t rush in to fix the problem. Instead encourage him to find solutions. When we cannot step back and allow children to make mistakes or discover life’s magic on their own, they lose the power to spread their wings. As children grow they want to rely less on us but still be aware of our love and inspiration. We are here to guide, to teach, to strengthen and to discipline. We have the ability to help our sons and daughters flourish, gain independence, and nourish their souls so that they can make a difference in this world.

Attention Mothers with Children Ages 10-18 Read This Very Important Message About Your Child’s Health
A
“Crooked twisted spine” (Idiopathic Scoliosis) can be devastating as it worsens especially in young teenage children so it must be caught early on. Your child is not born with Scoliosis, because it creeps up slowly in the growthspurt years, yet most busy Pediatricians miss it completely! After you read this you will have a sharp eye for spotting symptoms of Scoliosis like a doctor, so you can take action now, before it’s too late! If you want to save your child from possibly requiring spinal rod fusion surgery in their early 20’s this is for you… If your child is complaining of strange pains in their body for no reason keep reading on it may be an early sign of Scoliosis… “Reactive” Neuromuscular Retraining for Brain-Body Works … to Stop the Curve from Progressing
“When I was young I did not know I had Scoliosis, now that I am in my 50’s my biggest fear has come true, I’m hunched over and curved in. Luckily I don’t have trouble breathing… Years of Chiropractic adjustments got me nowhere with slowing my curve progression, and only gave me temporary pain relief! Chiropractic failed to address my Brain’s Postural System and that’s why I am still crooked, but now I am hopeful that my tilted posture will self correct with Allcare’s Brain-Body approach to Reactive Posture Training…”
SCOLIOSIS IS NOT A BONE PROBLEM – IT’S A BRAIN PROBLEM… By: Dr. Ofir Isaac PT, MS, DPT will become lazy around the spine belting, unless they are doing REACTIVE Neuromuscular Retraining (like Scroth™ exercises) combined with ACTIVE belting technology to force the ribs to expand from within. The spine will not stay upright against gravity without a brace. Allcare combines proven methods like Scroth™, PRI™ and Osteopathy™ with the latest posture muscle retraining technology using belting and weighted sling therapies, for REACTIVE muscle re-patterning in the BRAIN. Allcare’s approach is founded on the latest Medical Neuroscience principles, and we are able to deliver long lasting Neurological effects on the deep spinal musculature in Scoliosis. Bracing alone, without this approach, shuts the diaphragm’s power and the breathing muscles lose their tone causing the crooked ribs and spine to get worse outside of the brace.
“Now I warn all mothers to be proactive in checking their kids for a crooked spine early and get a Physio consult immediately…” — Chana W. (Allcare Client)
Physio-therapy is a “YOU FIX YOU” method, attacking the root source of the Scoliosis at the Brain Centers having the child ACTIVELY control the spinal postural muscles using precision motions…
Wait! STOP! Here’s an untold little secret if you are lucky to have caught Scoliosis early in your child… So like most parents who mean well, they suspect Scoliosis in their child and begin to seek the advice of Orthopedic Spine Specialists or Chiropractors and it’s not their fault when they are told …
Mild Scoliosis is the most responsive to our treatment philosophy. Moderate Scoliosis may be treated with exercise too, but wearing a medicallyprescribed brace is sometimes recommended as well. Severe Scoliosis usually needs to be corrected with spinal surgery.
1. Watch the curve on Xrays for curve progression, 2. Wait Until The Curve Gets to 25 Degrees, 3. Brace At 25 Degrees and hope for the best…
THERE is no MAGIC SOLUTION for Scoliosis BUT here is the best research on how to look for hidden signs of Scoliosis. Take this 30-second quiz now and answer the 5 questions below.
Secret: Did you know that once the curve goes past 25 degrees on Xray (mild Scoliosis), it’s very hard for Physio-therapy to stop and slow it down?
1.
Time is critical in managing Scoliosis in puberty stages, as it progresses with a vengeance of 5.4 degrees over a 6 month period, when it is not handled swiftly. It’s key that your child and you get coaching and advice fast, so you to stay on a path of preventing the curve from getting past 45 degrees (severe Scoliosis). SURGERY IS A MUST PAST 45 DEGREES! Scoliosis is a LIFE LONG battle without a cure, but a STRONG FOUNDATION EARLY ON WILL help your child stay healthy, pain-free and functional for LIFE… If your child has been to a Chiropractor, or Orthopedist and a brace was prescribed, the posture muscles
The child complains of migraines or tension headaches affecting prolonged sitting or standing 2. Pain in one hip with running or sports 3. It’s hard to stand up straight because of pain in the middle back and ribs 4. You notice the child is tilted to one side with one shoulder drooping down 5. Clothes don’t fit quite right and one leg is always shorter in trousers or the ribs hump in the shirt. If you found yourself checking off more than 3 on the list above, do this quick screen Pediatricians do to check for a RIB HUMP on one side. NOTE: It may be mild
but if you see one there is a Scoliosis. Since the school year has ended the best time to take care of this potential problem is now, and Allcare is offering FREE Scoliosis Screens that take less than 15 minutes for kids between the ages of 10–18. We will determine if there is a hidden leg length issue causing a Functional Scoliosis that can be controlled with changes in shoes or certain Physio Therapy exercises. We will determine if the Scoliosis is Structural… meaning that the rib hump is caused by something more brain-related and need a different path of care.

Easiest Father’s Day Burger Makes 4 burgers 1 to 1-1/4 pounds ground beef 3 tablespoons steak sauce (such as A.1.) 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons minced fresh oregano or 3/4 teaspoon dried 1 to 2 tablespoons finely minced onion Lots of good toppings: mustard, barbeque sauce, tomatoes, lettuce, onions and buns
Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl, mixing thoroughly with your hands or a wooden spoon. Shape into 4 patties by hand, making the center of each just a little thinner than the edges. Refrigerate until ready to grill. Have mom or dad do the grilling: Start your grill, and when it’s good and hot, grill the burgers to the desired doneness, flipping once. About 4 minutes each side. Serve with all the sauces and burger fixings.
The Barbecue Brisket to Beat All Barbecue Briskets Ten hours on the grill with a slather, a rub and a mop give this brisket an extraordinarily robust flavor. Paul Kirk’s recipe calls for a whole packer brisket, which includes both the flat (the larger, leaner portion) as well as the point (the smaller, fattier part for the burnt ends). When slicing the brisket, cut perpendicular to the grain to keep the meat juicy. More Beef Recipes
STEP 1 Light 50 charcoal briquettes using a chimney. Run the wand of a thermometer through a cork and use the cork to plug one of the air vents in the grill lid. Leave the remaining lid vents open and adjust the lower vents as needed (if the fire gets too hot, close the vents; too cold, open them).
STEP 2 Combine the ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Strain, cool and transfer to a spray bottle.
STEP 3 Mix the slather ingredients in a bowl. In another bowl, combine the rub ingredients.
STEP 4 Put the brisket on a large rimmed baking sheet and coat it with the slather. Sprinkle the rub all over the brisket.
Ingredients Mop
STEP 5
2 cups beef broth or low-sodium consommé 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce 4 garlic cloves, smashed 1/4 cup grated onion 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
When the coals are hot, push them to one side of the grill and set a drip pan half-filled with water on the other side. Using tongs, transfer 4 of the hot coals to the chimney to light an additional 25 briquettes. Set the brisket on the grill grate over the drip pan, fat side up, with the widest end facing the coals. Cover and cook for about 5 hours, maintaining a steady temperature inside the grill of 250° to 275° (add more lit coals, 25 at a time, every hour or so, as needed). Spray the brisket with the mop every hour.
Slather
STEP 6
1/4 cup Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons pickle juice (from a jar of dill pickles) 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 3/4 teaspoon hot sauce Rub 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 tablespoons light brown sugar 2 tablespoons smoked sweet paprika 2 tablespoons garlic salt1 1/2 teaspoons onion salt 1 1/2 teaspoons pure chile powder 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon celery seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano One 9-pound whole packer beef brisket, fat trimmed to 1/4 inch
After 5 hours, carefully flip the brisket and rotate it 180° so the opposite end is now facing the coals. Cover, then cook for 2 hours, spraying every hour with the mop and adding more hot coals to the grill as necessary.
STEP 7 Flip the brisket and rotate it 90°. Spray with the mop again, cover and cook for 1 1/2 hours. Flip the brisket a final time and rotate it 180°. Spray with the mop, cover and cook for about 1 hour longer, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part registers 185°.
STEP 8 To make the Burnt Ends, transfer the brisket to a carving board and cut off the point, slicing through the layer of fat that separates it from the brisket. Return the point to the grill. Spray it with the mop, cover and cook for 1 hour, or until the meat is almost black on the outside. Transfer the point to the carving board and let rest for 15 minutes. Slice into cubes and serve, or save for making . Thinly slice the brisket against the grain. Serve with Kansas City-Style Barbecue Sauce on the side. To advertise, call 718-513-9885

Chicken Guacamole Burgers Serves 4
Thinly-sliced tomatoes Canola mayonnaise
For the burgers: 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped 1/2 medium jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced 1 medium avocado, ripe, cut in 1/2-inch dice 1 teaspoon lime juice 1/2 teaspoon lime zest 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 pound lean ground chicken 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper To serve: 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 golden potato hamburger buns, toasted
Gently combine the onion, cilantro, jalapeno, avocado, and lime juice in a large bowl. In a second bowl, combine the lime zest, egg, ground chicken, salt, and pepper until thoroughly mixed. Add the guacamole mixture and mix with a fork until just combined. Form into four 1/2-inch-thick patties, working the mixture just enough so it holds together. (Avoid overcompacting the patties.) Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high. Add the burgers and cook until the bottom is well browned, about 5 minutes (when you slide a spatula under the burger, it should hold its shape). Flip the burgers over and cook another 4 to 5 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer stuck in the center registers 160°F. (The temperature will increase another 5 degrees before you eat the burger.) Serve on the toasted rolls.
