Baron Rothschild’s Secret by Rabbi Shlomo Landau

How the founding father of international finance remained humble and steadfastly committed to Torah values.

M

y maternal grandparents are Rothschilds. Inevitably, when I share this information with anyone, their immediate response is, “You mean the rich ones?” I always respond with the answer that my grandfather gave me when, as a young child, I asked him the same question. He recounted, with a twinkle in his eye, that when the patriarch of the Rothschild family, Baron Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812), was on his deathbed he turned to his two sons and said to one of them, “To you I bequeath all of

my wealth,” and to the other he said, “And to you I bequeath the brains and smarts.” My grandfather concluded by saying, “We didn’t get the wealth!” Mayer Amschel Rothschild was an incredible man, commonly referred to as “the founding father of international finance” and ranked seventh on the Forbes magazine list of “The 20 Most Influential Businessmen of All Time.” Yet, while he regularly circulated in royal circles as financier to Europe’s kings and queens, he remained steadfastly committed to Torah values and Torah

observance. He was also known to be exceedingly humble. This blend of extreme fame, massive wealth and humility is a rare anomaly. What exactly was the secret to his pious and grounded life? There is a well-known story that has been passed down through the generations that may be the key to unlocking this mystery. Mayer A. Rothschild once hosted a well-known Eastern European Torah scholar at his mansion in FrankfurtAm-Main. At the end of a busy work day the Baron invited his illustrious guest to accompany him on a stroll through the

mansion’s expansive gardens. As they walked, deep in conversation, they passed a small quaint cottage within the confines of the mansion. The Torah scholar asked the Baron about the nature of the cottage. The Baron replied that it was his private office. The perplexed guest pressed further, ”But don’t you have a private office in your home? Why the need for two offices?” The Baron tried to change the subject, hoping that his guest wouldn’t belabor the issue. But the Torah scholar persisted and the Baron finally capitulated and led him towards the cottage. He reached into his pocket and removed a key to open the door. He turned to his guest and related that even his own family members had never seen the inside of the cottage. When the guest saw the interior, he was shocked! The bare windowless room was completely empty except for a coffin in the center of the floor. Inside of the coffin were burial shrouds, and the book Ma’avar Yabok (a handbook of Jewish Law on death and mourning). Seeing the shock on the Torah scholar’s face, the Baron explained, “My professional life affords me the opportunity to interact with Europe’s kings, princes, the rich and famous. I know that I can easily slip into the pitfall of arrogance and start believing that it is thanks entirely to the power and might of my own hand that I have

prestige and wealth. So, at least once a day I try to slip out into the garden, enter this cottage, don the shrouds, lie in the coffin and recite the final prayers and confession. This keeps me grounded and humble.” In the Torah, Moses warns

Baron Mayer Amschel de Rothschild was an English businessman and politician of the English branch of the Rothschild family. He was the fourth and youngest son of Nathan Mayer Rothschild.

the fledgling Jewish nation on the precipice of the Land of Israel, “Take care lest you forget Hashem your God... lest you eat and be satisfied and build good houses and settle... and increase silver and gold for yourselves and everything that you have will increase and your heart will become haughty and you will forget Hashem your God who took you out of the Land of Egypt... And you may say in your heart ‘My strength and the might of my hand made me all this wealth.’ Remember that Hashem your G-d is the one that gave you strength to make wealth” (Deut. 8:11-18). Baron Rothschild internalized this lesson and took extreme measures to ensure he never forgot that his wealth and fame were a gift from God. America is one of the most affluent societies in the history of mankind, and the challenge of maintaining one’s values in the face of a culture that prizes wealth and affluence is a constant one. Perhaps we can borrow a page from the good Baron’s playbook and ensure our continued prosperity by attributing our financial successes to the real source of our good fortune. This story has also been attributed to other great historical personalities such as Sir Moses Montefiore or a later heir to the Rothschild dynasty. Regardless, it’s timely message is legendary. 21

My iPhone Addiction by Ari

How I learned to gain control over my incessant need to be constantly connected.

I

’m a junkie. I am addicted to my iPhone. I’m a regular guy. I live in Jerusalem and learn Torah every day. I exercise. I work a responsible job. I am good parent and spouse. And yes, I have a smart phone. I’ve heard about all the dire warnings from rabbis about the dangers of smart phones; their points are valid. But I needed my iPhone 24/6 for work and I had no choice. Or so I thought until this summer. Our family hosted Yael, a teenage girl who came to stay with us for a month after she finished up a year in seminary. Yael is a close family friend and we enjoy her company; she is great with the kids and helps out around the house. But after a week, I noticed that she had not left the house once. In fact, she barely left the living room. She just sat there on the couch, while

an entire world of chaos (five Israeli kids in apartment with neighborhood kids regularly stampeding through) exploded around her on a daily basis. Not a glance, not a stare. She was in her own world, oblivious to her surroundings, consumed by whatsapp, snapchat, instagram, email, news updates and even updates about when there would be more updates. Her thumbs tap danced on the screen at the speed of a Riverdance performer trying to keep up with the next beat – I mean beep. It was truly a spectacle to behold. “Why are you sitting on the couch all day?” I asked her. “Because I am attached,” Yael replied. She meant it literally. Her wireless phone was plugged into the wall. She did not leave the couch at the risk of running out of battery. One day catastrophe struck –

30 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

her iPhone broke. Yael was helping out in the kitchen, serving two kids macaroni, pouring drinks and peeling a banana for the baby all with one hand. In her other hand was the iPhone, where she was performing a one-legged show with her free thumb. As she reached for the send button, the phone slipped out of her hand and crashed onto the floor shattering the display and the phone wouldn’t turn on. “What am I going to do?” she said. “Can you grab the baby? He’s dangling from the highchair,” I said. She froze. She couldn’t focus on anything but the fate of her 36 whatsapp groups, the expected evening instagrams, and the conclusion of the selfie photo series her friends were snapchatting down the aisle at Shop Rite. “Don’t worry about it, I know a

place that can fix it,” I said. At the electronics repair shop the owner said to the visibly distraught Yael, “Come back tomorrow, I’ll see if maybe I can fix it.” “Maybe? Did he say maybe?” I heard Yael say to herself. By the time we got home, her facial expression went from worry to panic. She sat on the couch, almost crouched in a fetal position. She didn’t say a word, other than to ask if the guy from the electronics store called. The pandemonium of the lively kids didn’t faze her at all. She was catatonic and going through withdrawal. At first I was nervous, then scared and finally disgusted – at myself. Yael was clearly extreme, but was I much better? What would I do if I didn’t have my iPhone for 24 hours? I’d be pretty agitated. Perhaps a client or colleague was trying to get in touch with me. What about the news? The whatsapp group? The latest @dansdeals? In many ways Yael and I suffered from the same addiction. So I started thinking about gaining control over my need to be constantly connected to my iPhone. A few days later, my 12-year-old son asked me for an iPhone. This has come up before and in the past I have just said no. Thank God his classmates do not have smartphones, so the pressure to get one is a lot less. But, this time I pulled him aside and said, “Look at Yael. Is this a life? You go out and play sports, go on fun hikes, and learn a lot of Torah. Do you want to sit on the couch all day? Do you want to be so attached to a phone that you can’t ever let it go?” As the words were coming out of my mouth (while simultaneously responding to an email), I resolved to gain control and detach myself. I knew it wouldn’t be a complete cutting of the cord, but I needed to free myself for a period of time on a daily basis from the grid. And I did. I got another phone; a simple one that makes and receives calls, and that’s it. For several hours a day I only carry the simple phone. If anyone needs to call me my regular number rings on the simple phone. When my workday starts, I turn on my iPhone. It’s not a perfect solution but after doing this for only a number of weeks the change is noticeable and real. I am able to focus more on what I am actually doing like praying, learning, eating and even talking to my wife. I am not constantly distracted by another buzz or ding. I am focused on what I am doing right now. The emails, whatsapps and other updates can wait until I decide that I want to check them. I am not advocating for a complete disengagement. I still use my iPhone and it provides me with the access I need and want for work, family connections, news and of course Waze. But I am changing my routine, blocking out large chunks of time – I’m at five waking hours a day – where I am in control. And I like it.

The Knock on my Door by Judy Gruen

I was engrossed in Downton Abbey. Did I have to stop to welcome the beggar at my door?

I

heard the knocking on my front door clearly. Rap-rap-rap-rap! The sound of anticipation. Won’t someone please answer the door? I didn’t want to get the door. I was all but certain it was a meshulach, literally, a messenger, in need of money. They walk the streets of Jewish neighborhoods, men and women both, looking for mezuzahs affixed to the doorpost, a sign that a Jew lives there and won’t turn them away. I am usually at home with my husband, and sometimes our daughter, in the evenings, and we answer the door for meshulachim every time. But I was alone and decided to ignore all obligations for the next hour. I would leave the dinner cleanup, the ordering of the newspapers and mail, even the knock on the door. I told myself I was not obligated to answer every call of every beggar, especially when I was alone at night. Besides, I was eager to settle in to watch Downton Abbey, a series that has me transfixed. The twinge of guilt for ignoring the second set of raps on the door barely registered; all my sympathies at the

moment were focused on the troubles afflicting the characters in a mythical castle in Edwardian England. Living in a Jewish neighborhood, meshulachim knock at our door regularly, sometimes several times a week. Ever since my husband came home with a sign that says “Welcome Shabbas Guests!” which stays on the porch at a poorly hidden angle Sunday

through Thursday, we seem to attract even more. Many of the “messengers” come from Israel, and I can’t help but wonder how they pay for a round-trip ticket to Los Angeles when they are in such dire straits. Sometimes, the meshulachim are collecting for a yeshiva or kollel. Most, however, are individuals who

have hit hard times. The man with nine children, no job, two daughters still to marry off. The divorced woman with no job, in urgent need of dental surgery. Sometimes they come in pairs, but are collecting as individuals, something I learned at modest checkwriting expense. We often invite them in, and sometimes they will sit down and accept food or drink. It can be heartbreaking to see them, not only their profound personal distress but also their struggle to maintain dignity. Our sympathy is genuine; we, who have never known this sort of want, cannot imagine walking the streets in their worn out shoes. When we give them a check, they usually shower us with blessings, sometimes with tears in their eyes. They bless us with health and mazal, for good marriages for our unmarried children, for success and for peace. We return their blessings in full. I was still drying my eyes from the evening’s episode of Downton Abbey when I heard it again: Raprap-rap-rap. Clearly, the Almighty

wasn’t going to let me get away with displaying more sympathy for makebelieve characters than for His own flesh-and-blood people. I opened the door to a man who appeared to be in his forties, well dressed, with a small black carrying case. He greeted me by name, and I asked him how he knew it. “Joe” explained that he had knocked on our door before, and my husband had helped him with a generous sum, which he specified. Was my husband home now? No, I said, but I told him I would help with what I could. Joe launched into his story, which involved working for a company that been fingered by the federal government for illegal commercial dealings. Despite his insistence to the feds that his job had been too low-level for him to be culpable for the wrongdoing, he ended up in prison for several years. With a federal record, he works as a delivery guy for a kosher store. Joe said he needed $20,000 for medical treatment and had no insurance. He kept talking, showing me his medication bottles, and papers with doctors’ evaluations. I tried to balance my compassion with

reasonable limits on how long I could listen. When I asked if he had the teudah, the certificate from the local Jewish rabbinic organization that tries to “vet” the stories of the meshulachim, he fished it out but dismissed its relevance, which I found surprising and off-putting. Don’t those of us who are asked to give have a right to know the stories we are hearing have been verified to some degree? “I’m so sorry about your troubles,” I said. “I’ll write you a check, but we have many people knocking on the door, so it will be a modest amount.” He seemed surprised by this, and made a flippant remark questioning how severe other people’s needs were compared to his. Now I was almost angry. Was he that naïve or arrogant? Did he think he was the only one in financial crisis in the Jewish community? What if his story wasn’t entirely true? As I wrote a check for much more than I usually give, I regretted the amount. How did I know how many more people we’d have the opportunity to help during the rest of

the week? And what if he wasn’t for real? Maybe he had fooled the people at the organization that gives the certificate. Joe took the check and thanked me, but was still angling for more. “Should I come back later when your husband is home?” he asked. He added that he lived far away, and it wasn’t often that he could get to our neighborhood and see us. I was firm in answering “No.” I assumed a friend had loaned him the nice, new car he had parked across the street. Not two minutes later, my husband came home. I told him about Joe’s visit and why it had rankled me. What if his story wasn’t for real? I asked. “Who knows? It doesn’t matter. He’s a Jew in some sort of need,” my husband said. Of course he was right. We are only trustees of the Almighty’s money, as the Mishnah says, “Give to Him what is His because you and yours are His” (Ethics of the Fathers 3:8). Joe was a true meshulach, a messenger reminding me of my immense blessings, as well as my obligations not to harden my heart, even for an

The Flatbush Basketball League Week #6 Recap Junior Division Oh baby continues to ride the undefeated season, as they beat Jewish Connection 26-18. Jonathan Tzubary continues to lead the way for Oh Baby, as he scored 15 points. Yitzi Ponzak tries hard every week to bring his Jewish Connection team to victory, and this week was no different. He scored 11 points, however, his teams remains 2-4.Elya Lebovits played a strong game in the loss. Uzies Rami’s Pizza dominated against Larry`s 5 Towns Jewish Times, as they more than doubled their score. Mutty Iszak “Crash” was unstoppable with 24 unanswered points. New addition, Chaim Tzvi Guttman pumped in 20 as well. In the loss, Yossi Harar tried to bring his team within reach, however his 13 pints were to no avail. Rami’s is now 3-3 while 5TJT is 1-5.

Intermediate Division Horsepower Electric beat up on Buzz Magazine with a score of 84-63. It was close during parts of the game, however, David Suad’s season high 41 was too much for Yitzchok Devor and Co. Avrumi Ehrman helped Horsepower with 22 as well. Yitzchok Devor’s 29 and Zevy Finkelstein’s 24 were not enough in this one. Will Buzz be getting a trade next week? Stay tuned... China Glatt 40 Batampte Pickles 37: With a mid-game injury for Batampte’s star Shimon Greenwald, Batampte was looking down. Aryeh Ponzak tried to pick up the slack with his 13 points. However, Leiby Leibowitz and Co. were too strong now more than ever. Leiby ended the game with 28 points and now they hold the #1 seed with a 5-1 record. Shimon your team needs you back !!

Senior Division Plaza Auto Leasing (PAL) 57 Pizza Nosh 31- Two weeks after the three-way trade was made for Pizza Nosh they continue to struggle on the floor. Yehudah Fonfeder had 17 points for Pizza Nosh, however, it was not enough to hold off a more powerful PAL. It was 29-12 PAL at half, and there was no turning back. PAL is now 3-3 and Pizza Nosh is 1-5.Mr Lowenthaul you picked your team what happened?? ITP 38 Visual Image 36 If I told you MVP Mendy The Rabbis Son was held scoreless who would you put down with a W right 0 points, ITP still managed to pull this one off. Aryeh Kamelhar’s last second shot for ITP helped seal the deal in this nail-biter.Aryeh topped all scorers with 17 ITP remains a perfect 6-0 while Visual Image is 2-4.

Winter Wine Braised Short Ribs This recipe works for a French roast or any other thick cut roasts. Follow the same instructions but you may need to cook it a little longer to cook the roast through. Use a cooking thermometer to check doneness (145 degrees for medium rare, 165-170 for well done). Note: if you don’t like to cook with fresh herbs, use 2 teaspoons dried thyme, 1 teaspoon sage, 1 teaspoon rosemary, and ½ teaspoon oregano in place of the fresh herbs. 12 bone-in beef short ribs Kosher salt and coarse black pepper 4 to 5 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 carrots, chopped 2 ribs celery with leafy tops, chopped 2 onions, chopped 2 to 3 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons tomato paste One 750-milliliter bottle port, Bordeaux, or Cabernet 1 quart beef stock

1 cup pomegranate juice 10 to 12 sprigs fresh thyme 8 to 10 fresh sage leaves Four 5 to 6-inch-long stems fresh rosemary 2 to 3 stems fresh marjoram or fresh oregano 1 head garlic, halved horizontally 1 small handful fresh flat-leaf parsley, plus 3 tablespoons chopped, for garnish Pomegranate seeds, for garnish, optional

the remaining oil. Add the carrots, celery and onions and cook until softened, 6 to 7 minutes. Stir in the flour 1 minute, then add the tomato paste and continue stirring until fragrant. Pour in the port/wine and return the ribs to the pot. Bring to boil, then lower to a simmer and reduce the port by half, about 30 minutes. Stir in the stock, pomegranate juice, thyme, sage, rosemary, marjoram, garlic and the handful of parsley. Return to a boil, then cover and place in the oven, 2 hours 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Pat the meat dry and sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat and brown the meat well on all sides in 2 batches. Transfer the short ribs to a plate.

Transfer the beef to a platter and strain the sauce. Return the sauce to the heat to reduce and thicken a bit. Season the sauce with salt and pepper. Serve the ribs with the sauce. Top with pomegranate seeds.

Drain off the fat from the pot and add
