Emotional Freedom Technique Shoshana was fourteen years old when she was mugged on a New York street at twilight.
Twenty years passed but the memory was still as fresh as if it had occurred yesterday. Countless therapy sessions aimed at healing the trauma failed to bring her the peace of mind she craved. Occasional nightmares reminded her of the events of so long ago, and she would still get the shivers if she found herself on the street as dusk was falling. One day, a friend suggested she try something new – something called EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. Skeptical after so many other false promises, not to mention the strain on her wallet, Shoshana needed some convincing, but when her friend assured her that after just one session she’d already be able to tell if it was going to help, she agreed to give it a try. The EFT therapist sat her down in her comfortable office and got straight to the point. Fifty minutes later Shoshana closed the door behind her as she left, and burst into tears. Her friend, who had been waiting outside, jumped up, alarmed. “No – it’s okay,” Shoshana told her, laughing through her tears. “I can’t believe it – I feel great! I’m cured!”

There are literally thousands of stories like Shoshana’s, and even the scientific community is starting to take notice. The medical establishment particularly has reason to investigate EFT’s claims, given its poor track record in dealing with many of the conditions that EFT treats. Tired of resorting to medication (with severe side effects) to treat lifedisrupting issues like anxiety, trauma, phobias, or cravings, many people are eagerly seeking out new ways of addressing their complaints. Although many of the “New Age” modalities are no doubt pure quackery, EFT seems to be one of the exceptions.
Off the COuCh Traditional psychoanalytic methods for dealing with emotional disability are currently out of favor, and for good reason: The reliving of past traumas that psychologists claimed was necessary to learn to move beyond, was in itself traumatic, and many people found themselves unable to tolerate the distress – not to mention that the results were less than impressive. People were typically in therapy for years (if not decades) with little to show for it, other than depleted bank accounts. The development of energy psychology (of which EFT is one branch) was in part a response to this reality. Conventional psychology holds that the memories of a traumatic event are
what cause the pain of the present. This fails to explain why people respond differently to the same experience. For example, many people might, lo aleinu, be in the close vicinity of a terror attack, but only a few will develop PTSD symptoms as a result. For those people, going back to the scene “on the psychoanalyst’s couch” will likely be a very traumatic experience and may even intensify their emotional anguish. PTSD is notoriously hard to treat, as is known from many case studies, such as those involving veterans of the Vietnam War. Twenty or more years later, many of them were still suffering intensely. Conventional treatment models have been largely unsuccessful in relieving their symptoms. Yet after using EFT, many found great relief.
A New PArAdigm “The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system,” writes Gary Craig, one of the founders of EFT. It is not the memory of the event that causes the trauma, he asserts, but rather the energetic response, which is highly individual. Craig based his new technique on TFT – Thought Field Therapy – which was developed by cognitive psychologist Roger Callahan. TFT utilized the basic theory of acupuncture but dispensed with the needles. Unlike with acupressure, he merely tapped lightly on the meridian
points, developing a complex sequence of taps, each one of which was tailormade to suit the emotional issue being dealt with. Craig refined the method and simplified it. With his EFT, there is only one sequence of tapping, used for all clients regardless of what their issues are. As with TFT, the tapping is performed while the client holds in mind the issue troubling him, preferably verbalizing it. The stated goal is to reduce, and hopefully eliminate, the emotional “charge” of the issue, so that after the session, the client can cast his mind back to the traumatic event and recall it without discomfort. Whereas traditionally, Chinese acupuncture has been used to treat physical ailments, EFT specifically targets the emotional component to health. Today this is readily understandable, as more and more people (even within the medical profession) are coming to recognize the connection between emotional stress and illness. EFT can be used to treat physical complaints, but with less success. Craig, in fact, cites one example, which is particularly instructive: A woman came to him complaining of severe pain in her foot. He treated her using EFT, but her symptoms were not relieved. He then began to address her emotional issues, which included feelings of guilt related to her husband’s death. After a few sessions devoted entirely to her emotional issues, her foot pain (as well as
eft iN the BrAiN: How Does It work? Despite decades of increasingly sophisticated investigation into the nature of the brain, relatively little is understood about its workings. Nonetheless, some progress has been made toward understanding how EFT might operate. The region of the brain that deals with basic emotions such as fear, anger, and anxiety is called the amygdala – it is located towards the back of the brain, near the nape of the neck. When the amygdala is activated, it releases a threat response (the famous “fight or flight”), and it is presumed that in the aftermath of trauma, the response to a triggering event becomes more or less automatic. Some researchers believe that the tapping of EFT serves to activate acupoints, which deactivate the signals being transmitted to the amygdala, resolving the threat, as far as the brain is concerned. Another region of the brain, called the hippocampus, then records the previously traumatic stimulus as unthreatening, and the new learned response to the trigger is now one of calm acceptance rather than panic. These same researchers, however, are quick to qualify this theory by stressing that it is really nothing more than an oversimplified hypothesis. Nobody really knows how EFT works, but nobody has succeeded in proving that it doesn’t… MAGAZINE NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885 11

her emotional stress) resolved itself. EFT is a particularly attractive proposition for several reasons: • The tapping is so simple that even young children can learn how to do it • Once learned, the client can use the technique on himself without the help of a therapist • Issues are resolved quickly; typically, one to three sessions are more than enough
gettiNg tO the POiNt Nonetheless, EFT is more than just tapping; there are two parts to the process. Figuring out what exactly is the issue that is bothering a client is vital; if the core issue is not addressed, healing is often incomplete. Sylvia Hartmann, one of the developers of EFT, writes that “a single sentence placed to a young child can do and undo more than thirty years spent in therapy for an adult.” Honing in on this “single sentence” is what distinguishes a good EFT practitioner from a mediocre or ineffectual one. At the time of the trauma, the energy system of a person is disrupted by the energetic message (sometimes called the “metacomment”) generated by the person. For example, someone in a horrific car crash might tell himself, “It’s all my fault – I should have been more careful.” Feelings of guilt could then plague that person for the rest of his life. Let’s say it truly wasn’t the person’s fault, and on a conscious, logical level, the person act ua l ly k nows this. However, the t r a u m a remains, since it was
12
embedded in the energy system at the time of the accident and needs to be dislodged. This is what the tapping does. Repeating the statement “It wasn’t really my fault,” even millions of times will not achieve the same results as tapping on the statement. Which statement? Interestingly, the statement used will not be, “It wasn’t my fault,” but rather, “It’s all my fault.” The statement used has to be one that causes a measure of emotional distress (though within tolerable limits), as this indicates that the core issue is being addressed. Simply getting the person to say, “I don’t like cars,” or “I feel bad when I’m driving,” isn’t good enough. Once the statement is there, the tapping begins. Following the lead of the therapist, the client taps on the following points: top of head; “third eye”; eyebrow next to nose; far point of eye; directly below the pupil; underneath the nose; underneath the mouth; on the collar bone to one side; on the sides of the fingers. While doing so, the client repeats the statement, out loud. The sequence is repeated as many times as the client feels necessary, and usually, the statement will be refined each time. Using the car accident example again, the client may finish the first sequence and say, “Oh – now I see it really wasn’t all my fault. I could have
been more careful, but maybe it wasn’t avoidable.” Then, he might want to start a new sequence, saying something like, “I am not careful enough.” The goal, in this example, is to reach the point not only where he does not blame himself, but where he feels comfortable with himself and confident that he can respond correctly and effectively in stressful situations.
heAliNg fOr life As mentioned, EFT can be used to address a wide variety of issues including anxiety (social, public-speaking, etc.), phobias, food cravings, addictions, guilt, PTSD, low self esteem, and many more. Professional literature provides an abundance of evidence showing how EFT can resolve even serious, chronic problems within hours – if not minutes. Sounds unbelievable? Let’s take a look at some of the scientific studies that have been conducted. Many blind studies have strongly indicated that the benefits of using EFT are real, not just a placebo effect. One double-blind study (using simulated needles) showed that EFT was just as effective as acupuncture, and several informal studies have even suggested that EFT can be more effective on occasion. One large-scale study conducted in Argentina and Uruguay tracked the progress of 5000 people suffering from severe anxiety issues, over the span of five years. Half the group was treated with CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy, the standard therapy choice for anxiety issues) as well as anti-anxiety medication; the other half used EFT. At the conclusion of the therapeutic period, results showed that a full 90% of those in the

ll civilized societies have a system of law enforcement, and a society governed by Torah law is no exception. The common assumption is that without a legal – and a penal – system, everything would collapse into some version of “might is right” – and this is most probably true. In fact, the Mishnah actually states as much: “If it were not for fear of government, man would swallow up his fellow man alive” (Avos 3:2). Obviously, this Mishnah does not have to be understood only literally, and its lesson is just as applicable to the field of business as to any other sphere of activity. Many of us will freely admit that we’d act quite differently in our financial dealings were it not for the specter of “the law” looming over us. The question is, who is this “we” and what does it really want? Does it truly want to be a thief, and get away with it? In Torah terms, we might define this thief wannabee as the nefesh behamis, the component of a person that is defined by its animalistic instincts. For our current purposes, we can describe a person dominated by the nefesh as a “taker” and a person who is ruled by his higher, neshamah component, as a “giver.” Society is composed of givers and takers. It sounds simplistic, but that’s the truth. There isn’t really a middle ground. Laws and punishments are there for the takers – everything would break down otherwise. Givers don’t need rules – they do the right thing because of their own, internal regulation; because of personal conviction. (Here one might add that a person who acts in a seemingly altruistic way, but is really motivated by a desire for honor or gratitude, is not truly a giver – his giving is a form of taking, albeit a more sophisticated one.) Givers give because they want to, not because they have to, and not because they need or want anything back. This doesn’t mean that a giver can’t be a great businessman. “Nice guys finish last” isn’t actually true and most successful businessmen know this. But it does mean

that making money is viewed from a different perspective. A giver’s business is fundamentally different from the corporation run by a taker. In a nutshell, the taker’s bottom line is “make money” whereas the giver’s raison d’etre is “make a contribution.” G-d could quite easily have created a world where there was no need for all of this financial temptation, where each person or family unit was self-sufficient, happily ensconced on his little farm, growing all his food and harvesting cotton and linen for clothing. But He didn’t – for a good reason. Trade is one of the main characterbuilding enterprises of the world – doing business provides daily (if not hourly) moral challenges to be surmounted. What
Do we truly want to be thieves, and get away with it? clues does the Torah give us, that can help us to meet those challenges head-on? You could go to a Dale Carnegie course, or find a mentor who’s “made it,” but what the Torah tells us to do is something very different. “Go to the ant, you lazy one,” it states (Midrash Rabbah, parashas Shoftim, chapter two), “observe her ways and become wise. She has no ruler and no policeman [to fear, yet…] she flees from theft…” What does being lazy have to do with not stealing? And how do we know the ant isn’t lazy? The Midrash explains that an ant accumulates huge stockpiles of grain, much more than it can possibly consume in its lifetime. Rabi Tanchuma asks, “An ant only lives for six months… so why does it act like this? The reason is that the ant says, ‘Maybe Hakadosh Baruch Hu will decree that I live longer, and then I’ll have food ready
to eat…’” This is puzzling, because it seems that it has little relevance for humans, whose lifespan is not predetermined. For us, it makes perfect sense to keep accumulating wealth, as we have no idea if we’ll live to seventy, ninety, or even 120. Furthermore, the motivation sounds very selfish. Surely it would be more appropriate for a Jew to accumulate possessions to benefit his family and the wider community? Why does the Torah choose to tell us that the ant intends the surplus to be for himself? We find a clue in a different ma’amar Chazal, in Avos d’Rabi Nosson (3:5). There, Rabi Dostai gives advice to a farmer, telling him that even if he already planted one field, he should still plant a second one, and then a third, as he cannot know in advance which crop will succeed. Then, he adds something interesting: “Maybe all three will succeed.” Isn’t that obvious? What does this come to tell us? We know that three things are predetermined in a person’s life: a spouse, a dwelling-place, and a field – “bas ploni l’ploni; bayis ploni l’ploni; sadeh ploni l’ploni” (Sotah 2a). A field is not just the physical location of a person’s crop – it’s also the nature of his livelihood, the means by which he’ll make a living, and the specific way in which he makes his contribution to the world. This is what Rabi Dostai is teaching: Even if you achieved something, don’t stop there, but keep trying in another area, and then another. Even if you don’t see results straight away, keep on plugging away, as you never know what will ultimately make the difference. And even if everything works out perfectly then still keep going, because you can still continue to contribute and make a difference. This is the lesson of the ant, who never stops working. The food it gathers is not the ultimate goal, but only the means to the end. In order to work, it needs to eat, so it keeps gathering grain. But the purpose of the gathering is something else altogether, and possibly even unknown to the ant,

“make money” whereas the giver’s raison d’etre is “make a contribution” though we can guess, as we know that each creature is part of an interconnected food chain and that the absence of any of the parts affects the whole. Even the humble ant is intrinsic to creation. The ant, therefore, is a contributor to the world’s continued existence – a giver, not a taker. Why should she stop working if she can keep making a difference? Why should we stop participating in life, if we still have work to do? If our jobs are solely a means to make money in order to engage in other pursuits – learning Torah, charity work, educating our children – then of course once enough money has been earned to enable this, we go home and get on with more important things. But if the business itself is part of our tafkid, our purpose in life, then how much we earn is immaterial – we can stay at the office and keep on going*, knowing that we are doing exactly what we need to be doing, and that the paycheck at the end of the month is largely immaterial. If more people would only internalize this idea – that business is an activity of giving, not taking – then we would have less scandals, less thievery, less cut-throat competition. Those who see business as a noble activity of contribution are not tempted to make money at the expense of others, as their whole mindset is one of giving to others, not taking from them. Such people don’t need regulations to deter them from theft. Neither do they need to become crazy workaholics, always worrying about what the future might hold. To the contrary: They look to the future with an optimistic eye, hoping and expecting that G-d will continue to give them the means to help perfect His world. Based on the writings of Rabbi David Lapin * Of course this doesn’t mean that a working father (or mother, sister, son…) can neglect his other responsibilities in life.

Writing Workshop

ONE OF THE MORE COMMON TECHNIQUES FOR STIMULATING A WRITING session is that of giving a prompt. A prompt can be just a word: rain, snow, happiness; or a theme: my best friend, my favorite season… The idea is to jump in there and get writing without thinking too much. Editing comes later – it shouldn’t be done simultaneously or you’ll likely find that you never finish a piece of writing. Prompts can also be used in writing therapy, and oftentimes, you’ll find yourself able to access feelings that are hard to get at if attacked directly. Here’s an example of a writing session for one lady. The prompt here was: “Reclaiming My Voice.” The assignment was two-fold: To write anything she felt was associated with this topic, and then to compose a poem. This lady found that she completed the tasks with surprising ease – it took her less than ten minutes to finish.
R. MARGALIT
Here’s what she wrote: sounded ed voice, it rd co re y m hea rd someone Whenever I the voice of ke li ot n , d il e of a ch er why that like the voic t. The prose paragraph, written “off the top of her head,” revealed her feelings regarding her ability to express herself, as well as her underlying motivations when interacting with others. Somehow, writing quickly without thinking too deeply bypassed her natural reluctance to admit that she was avoiding responsibility. She felt surprised at the words that came out, but readily admitted that they expressed the truth. She greatly enjoyed writing the poem, and discovered an aptitude for poetry she’d never realized she had. It felt “like painting a picture with words.” In fact, writing poetry in this free-form style is good exercise for all kinds of writing, as it makes the writer more aware of the words he is using and the sounds evoked in the reader’s mind as he scans the page. Writing becomes truly a work of art and a very satisfying endeavor. In the poem, she used various constructs to make the piece more striking. The first lines of both stanzas begin similarly, but the “sounds” is a verb in the first stanza, and can also be nouns in the second. “…parting of the waves” is presumably a double entendre – waves as in sound-waves, not just the metaphor of sea waves. The two stanzas clearly represent two different experiences in life for this lady, and it is encouraging that she ends with a message of hope, of progression towards the “possible.” Nonetheless, after some more thought, this lady realized that her experience of her voice was solely directed towards how other people reacted to her. She began to think about whether it might be better to have a more self-directed attitude – whether reclaiming her voice meant that she should find her voice independent of whether other people recognized it or not.
