LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers, It’s now the month of Tammuz, and Buzz is going to be taking a break for the summer. This being the last issue beforehand, it should really have been packed full of inspiration and chizuk to keep you going for these tough weeks ahead – tough, because Tammuz and Av are months “that belong to Eisav,” dangerous times for us Jews. It’s also parashas Chukas, and maybe that’s all the inspiration and chizuk we need. The parashah begins: “And Hashem spoke to Moshe and Aharon, saying: This is the law of the Torah which Hashem commanded…” Rashi explains that the nations of the world will ridicule the Jews regarding the mitzvah of the parah adumah, the red heifer, mocking us that this commandment makes no sense whatsoever, so why are we doing it? What should we reply? “It’s a decree straight from Hashem, and we are not allowed to question it.” In today’s world, the Torah Jew faces ridicule and contempt from many directions, most painfully, from his own brothers, those Jews who are far from mitzvah observance. When a secular Jew is genuinely curious, we explain to the best of our ability, but when we are mocked, our explanations fall on deaf ears, because someone who mocks isn’t looking for answers. All we can do is insist that we possess the truth – we have Torah, and we don’t need to prove it to anyone. Torah survived the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Romans… and it’s going to survive the liberals, the secularists, the moral relativists, too. We live in the physical world, and we work with it, to uplift it and make it holy. In any place we find ourselves, there are mitzvos that can be done – people to help, a brachah we can make, people we can influence for the better. But we live in the spiritual world, too, and we must never forget this. Just one word of prayer, one thought of connecting to Hashem, lifts us up far above the mundane and alters the entire picture. Why should we take the trouble? Isn’t it so much easier to go through life without thinking so deeply? But we’re Jews. We’re G-d’s people. This is our privilege, and we don’t ever want to forget it.

A Tale of Shabbos in Two Cities

rev Shabbos Kodesh, parashas Shelach, the twenty-third of Sivan 5693 (1933). The sun is dipping towards the horizon, scattering its golden rays over the waters of the Kinneret. In just a few minutes, the scene will be transformed, both in the lower and the upper worlds – the darkness of the physical world to be lit up by the illumination of Shabbos. The gentle waves of the lake lap against the beach, their sound mingling with the tread of tens of footsteps, hurrying along the stony path towards a little building overlooking the water. The little building is the old shul of Kollel Reisin where the Slonimer chassidim daven, the younger generation warming themselves around the fire of the handful
By Y. Rabinovitz Queen. ************** The night of Shabbos Kodesh, parashas Shelach, the twenty-third of Sivan. The waves of the Mediterranean Sea batter into the limestone rocks along the Tel Aviv shoreline, torrent after torrent striking with force. But the frothing of the waters is commonplace, and the white foam on the crests of the waves offers no hint of the drama poised to unfold, in just a few short moments. Few in number are those to be found on the beach at this hour, although they would have benefited from the fresh sea breeze, carrying its salty scent onto the mainland, refreshing the air after yet another sweltering day. There are many types of Jews in the burgeoning city of Tel Aviv, but even those at the far end of the spectrum from the chassidim who still find a foothold there harbor a fondness in their hearts

for the holy Shabbos. All week long they struggle to maintain their existence in “the land that consumes its inhabitants” – consumes, if the inhabitants do not value it, do not treasure it sufficiently. And all Shabbos long they refresh their spirits – in the zemiros, in the special dishes they have prepared, in the tefillos, in the extra measure of sleep. ************** The final Borchu, the final Kaddish, and the mispallelim remove their talleisim and set them aside for the morning. Here there is no buzz of politics or money-talk as soon as their ‘duties’ have been fulfilled. Here, their only duty is to the One Above – they came to honor Him, and they honor Him as they leave, and in all their goings and comings. This is a rare group of Yidden – they would have been a chiddush even a hundred years before their time, and will forever be remembered for their singleminded devotion to the avodas Hashem that dominated all of their waking hours. The tzaddik Harav Mordechai Chaim Kastelanitz ztz”l, known to all as Reb Mottel Slonim, walks slowly from his regular place in the beis medrash, passing by the Rav of Teveria, the gaon Harav Moshe Kliers ztz”l. He wishes him “Gut Shabbos,” and continues on, walking past the bimah, where he meets his close friend Harav Avraham Weinberg ztz”l, (later to become the Admor of Slonim, the Birkas Avraham). They exchange a few chiddushim, profound ideas gleaned from the parashah of the week, whose sole topic is love of Eretz Yisrael and the

importance of speaking in its praise. Seeing these two towering figures conversing, some of the younger generation crowd around, hoping to catch a few pearls to repeat to their families awaiting them, to give them an extra infusion of inspiration. They are rarely disappointed. Although Reb Mottel clearly dwells in a realm far above that of most others, and shows no desire to enter into the mundane details of what others would call life, still there is much to be learned from him, and visitors to Teveria return to their home towns full of wonder that such a Yid still exists in such a generation, surrounded by such a world – and yet rising above it, at each and every moment. ************** The streets of Tel Aviv have now all but emptied of those returning from shul, and if one strains one’s ears, the sounds of the sea are as distinct as the scent of salt permeating the air. How many people are left now on the beach? A few drifters – and one pacer. With calm, but absent-minded steps, Chaim Arlozorov saunters back and forth along the shore path, deep in thought. Perhaps no lit cigarette dangles from his fingers, but there is no barrier within him to prevent him from this. In a country still bound to its traditional roots, Arlozorov is a member of the ‘New Yishuv’ – those who have thrown off the shackles of mesorah and now stride confidently towards a future they imagine to be brighter than anything our People has ever known. But Arlozorov is not, and never has been content to be a mere member. No – he is of the vanguard, those who lead and light the way, daring to tread where others fear to go. And he has gained the greatest admiration for this trait of his, among the secular leadership of the country that does not yet exist, save for in the hearts and minds of a few. Arlozorov is just thirty-three years of age, yet he has already been appointed as head of the State Bureau of the Jewish Agency, that organization of pretenders to power. Pretenders, because the British are still the rulers of Palestine, and they
will not let the Jews forget it, not for one moment. They still take pride in the last glowing embers of their dying Empire, its tentacles grasping onto farflung outposts that in just a few short years will rebel against their nowillusory might and cause all those fine Englishmen to retreat back to their little island in the corner of Europe. Palestine is one of those outposts,

But the British have not yet conceded defeat – in fact, they are more determined than ever, with each setback, to stiffen their upper lips and plod stoically forward, treading on both Jew and Arab, upon the former with more glee than the latter. Arlozorov’s brow furrows and his eyes narrow to glinty slits as he calls to mind his most recent meeting with the

representatives of British officialdom. It had been a humiliating encounter. Summoned to appear before them, he was peremptorily informed that the civil service posts until then held by Jews were to be transferred to gentiles, who were willing and able to labor for a full seven-day week. Superciliously peering over their thin glass lenses, the officials coldly informed him that they had little use for “lazy Jews” and could easily find replacements for them. Dismissed like a stray cat or pesky fly from the office, Arlozorov was nevertheless not entirely crushed. If the matter had been one of merely earning a living, then perhaps he would have submitted to the British, as he and his colleagues customarily did, awed into silence and false patriotism. But here the issue went beyond money. It was a matter of pride for the Jewish Agency that those chosen to act as the long arm of the Mandate rulers should be Jews. And so, a solution had to be found. For the next few days, Arlozorov alternately sat in his swivel chair or paced the corridors, seeking an answer to his dilemma. It was not long in coming. After enlisting the assistance of powerful Jews in various positions abroad, he eventually managed to persuade the British commander Arthur Vikop to return the positions to Jewish hands – on the condition that he, Arlozorov, would provide the British with hardworking men who would labor for the entire seven days of the week. * While the New Yishuv revels in its hard-won victory, the Old Yishuv shakes and trembles in its last few enclaves. As the news spreads, so do the shockwaves – the shock that one of their own, however far removed from their way of life, dared to be the assassin to plunge a stave into the heart of Yiddishkeit. In Tel Aviv, in Yerushalayim, on the dusty streets of the little settlements scattered all over, and in Teveria, there is but one political topic on the lips of all, and the furor will not die down. Reb Mottel reaches the door of the beis medrash and pauses before stepping over the threshold. Discerning something out

of the ordinary, he detects amid the background noise the muted, though clearly heated exchanges of the younger members of the shtiebel. He turns and retraces his steps, approaching the source of the commotion, his eyes and expression querying the intrusion of the mundane into a place where it has no right to enter. Sensing his disapproval, one of the group respectfully hurries to apprise him of the developments, the pain on his face mirrored by all those standing around. Another young chassid subtly tries to cut the monologue short, quietly gesturing to the clock and hinting that time is short – all too soon, they will have to rush back to shul for the sitz of Shabbos night – hurry – look what time it is already, half-past-nine… ************** What is the time? This is the question that is even then, at that very minute, being asked on the beach in Tel Aviv. What is the time?

It is half-past-nine, the questioner is answered. ************** Reb Mottel turns pale as he learns of the breach made in kedushas Shabbos, in Eretz Yisrael, by Jews… Seeing his agitation, the chassid who has been the bearer of the bad tidings regrets his actions, but there is no recalling words already uttered. He mumbles his apology with downcast eyes and turns to leave. But Reb Mottel appears not to hear. He remains standing, silently, seemingly unaware of the growing silence all around him. His eyes are focused far away, his thoughts located somewhere very distant. A heart that beats in trepidation at the sanctity of Shabbos, that shudders to contemplate anything less than total severance from the profane, now contracts in pain at the pain of the Ribbono shel Olam, that His precious gift has been sullied. A mind that has been refined by nothing more and
nothing less than pure Torah and yiras Shamayim can have but one answer to this violation. With a trembling voice he murmurs, barely audibly: “All those who profane it shall surely be put to death.” ************** Two shots ring out and pierce the still air on the Tel Aviv beach. Two shots – to this day, their source is unknown. Straight into the heart of Chaim Arlozorov – he falls, lying in his blood; he dies scant minutes later. Two shots, which cause the new secular settlement in Eretz Yisrael to shudder. ************** In Teveria no one was surprised to hear of the news on Motzoei Shabbos. There were those who had known already on Shabbos evening that words emitting from the holy mouth of Reb Mottel would not be uttered in vain.

M
y chronic hip pain, which plagued me for a year, slowly faded away. I released old emotional patterns and a lot of anger. I became more intuitive and calmer and started feeling a deeper connection with myself and who I truly am: infinite, godly, beautiful, and happy…” Furthermore, this form of healing can “cure almost all ailments: heart and lung diseases, digestive troubles, fevers and skin affectations… and helps to conquer laziness, sleep, mental weaknesses…” What is the secret behind the miracles? Yoga.
Today it is easy to find yoga classes in any Western metropolis, and Jewish neighborhoods are no exception. The new trend is to label the practice “kosher” and claim that what is being taught has been divorced from its Hindu, idol-worshipping origins. Spurred on by growing disillusionment with conventional medicine and its
frequent failure to cure chronic illness or pain, yoga has many thousands of religious Jewish adherents who like to believe that their newfound hobby is nothing more than a complex exercise system. But it is not. The irony is that even as Westerners praise yoga for its physical benefits, its Hindu teachers protest that yoga is far, far more than mere physical exercise. In fact, the idea that yoga is designed to promote physical health is actually in direct contradiction to the beliefs underlying yoga. Yoga – A Way to Escape the World According to tradition, hatha yoga (the variety most widespread in the West) was introduced to the world by “Lord Krishna,” and “Lord Shiva,” one of Hinduism’s most feared deities, also known as “The Destroyer,” was the first hatha yoga teacher. The average American believes that hatha yoga is a branch of yoga devoted solely to physical health and that it has nothing to do with spirituality or anything remotely transcendental. B.K.S. prominent hatha yoga leaders of modern times, emphatically denies this, explaining that there is no separating the physical from the spiritual, just as “there is no distinction between one yoga and another. Yoga, like G-d is one.” According to him, the aim of all types of yoga is to reach the mental state where intellect and ego are “all restrained and all these faculties are offered to the L-rd for His use and in His service.” Superficially, this sounds nicely in line with what Torah teaches us. Iyengar writes further, “The needs of the body are the needs of the divine spirit which lives through the body. The yogi does not look heaven-ward to find G-d for he knows that He is within.” (Lehavdil) Torah also teaches that we are to make ourselves containers for G-d’s presence in this world, and that the ego has to learn to submit to ratzon Hashem. However, the reason for going through this process in Hinduism (and therefore yoga) is totally different from the reasons given by Torah. As religious Jews, we know that G-d created this world for a purpose and that everything that He created is good. The philosophy underlying yoga states the total opposite: that all physicality

is an illusion, and not just that, but a pointless illusion that causes needless suffering for all living beings. Whereas the goal of a Torah Jew is to uplift this world, the goal of the yogi is to escape from this world. “So what?” you might ask. “I can get a cure from a non-Jewish doctor, so why not from a Hindu yogi? And why not from a Jewish yoga teacher?” The question then, is: “Where is this cure coming from?” Who Signs the Prescription? The holy Zohar teaches that everything in this world was created with a balance in order that we should have bechirah, free choice. A person can choose to earn an honest living, or he can lie and cheat. A person can plow and reap his own crops, or he can steal his daily bread. The end result – food on the table – may appear the same, but in truth it is not. The honest man receives his portion from Hashem. The evil man receives from the Satan. And, after 120 years, when the evil man is brought to judgment, the Satan will proclaim: “You are mine! I fed you all your life, and now you belong to me!” That man will not merit to enter Gan Eden, Rachmana litzlan. Similarly, there are many ways to achieve a “cure” in this world. Someone with, for instance, chronic back pain, can make a cheshbon hanefesh, to try to figure out why he is suffering this pain, and then do teshuvah, while praying to G-d for a cure. He can also use conventional means of medicine, all the while knowing that G-d is the true healer. Alternatively, a person can ignore the spiritual component to his suffering, and run straight to the doctor, get a prescription, and carry on living as if nothing happened. Certainly this is not the ideal, as it takes no note of hashgachah pratis. However, the person doesn’t actually deny Hashem’s involvement in his life – usually, he is simply too lazy, or not accustomed, to act in any other way. But the person who decides to follow a creed which proclaims lechatchilah that illness, and indeed, all of physical

HEALTH life, is totally pointless, is virtually sticking it to G-d and saying, “I just want to end this suffering. I don’t care why it happened – there IS no why.” This person is blocking G-d from his life, and following the principle that “What happens below is mirrored by Above,” G-d will distance His open involvement from this person’s life. This person’s cure comes from the Other Side, not a good source at all… Of course, this is not quite what your local guru will tell you. Yoga teachers and other New Age practitioners prefer to focus on yoga’s effect on the subtle, or astral body, and how it connects with the physical body via certain points known as chakras. The postures of yoga are designed to realign the person – not in order to restore him to physical health (though that is a stepping-stone along the way), but in order to reach “kaivalya” (emancipation) and escape karma (reincarnation) and what they see as infinite lives of sorrow and pain. Let’s take a brief look at some of the ways in which yoga claims to achieve this. To Bow or not to Bow… In yoga, there are two types of what are called asanas, postures the person must adopt in order to reach certain goals. These are the therapeutic postures, and the meditative postures. The therapeutic postures are those that are designed to strengthen the physical body. They have names like “Warrior Pose,” “Cobra Pose,” or “Sun Salutations.” By and large these poses are actually different ways of bowing or otherwise showing deference to the various idols Hindus worship. The names of the poses often reflect this (eg. sun salutations) and in traditional yoga classes these names are preserved even in the Western world. “Kosher” yoga teachers obviously don’t use the names of idols. But they DO use the postures – otherwise, there
wouldn’t be anything much left to teach. Is one permitted to twist one’s body in a certain way that Hindus use to worship, say, the moon, and have in mind to be worshipping only Hashem, instead? That’s a question for your rav. But consider this: Would you make the “sign of the cross” over your chest while loudly proclaiming, “Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov” or “Hashem Echad”? Why are Hindu idol-worshipping postures any different? The other type of posture in yoga is the meditative posture. There are many forms of these, and probably the most widely known is the “Lotus Position” (padmasana). According to yoga authorities, this posture “is instrumental in opening the lotuses, another name for the chakras or psychic energy centers of the subtle body. The position naturally awakens the flow of Kundalini energy from the base of the spine and directs it to the crown chakra…” Experienced yogis who harness this energy often suffer tremors, spasms, violent shaking, and twisting and contortions, but these symptoms are seen as a positive sign that the person is progressing towards “enlightenment.” Most Westerners practicing yoga, of course, don’t ever reach this stage, but they do claim to feel healthier and stronger than ever before and many swiftly become almost addicted to their yoga “fix,” wondering how they ever managed without it. It’s funny – we don’t hear of people getting addicted to aerobics, Pilates, or jogging… What is it about yoga that pulls people to keep coming back? And the Snake was Wiser… The key seems to be the type of energy that flows in the body during a yoga session. This “kundalini” energy is also known by another name in the Hindu/yoga world – they call it “serpent power.” If that sounds suspicious, then

it is. This is what Harav Aryeh Kaplan ztz”l has to say about “serpent power”: “The Talmud states that one of the reasons why the Amidah has eighteen blessings is that they parallel the eighteen vertebrae of the spine and neck… This brings to mind the concept of kundalini energy that is discussed in Eastern teachings… the spine is universally recognized as an important conduit of energy… “Whereas in kundalini meditation one strives to elevate energy from the base of the spine to the head, in the Amidah one brings energy from the mind to the rest of the body. The Talmud also teaches that if one does not bow in the blessing of thanksgiving [Modim], one’s spine turns into a snake… in a spiritual [sense]… “The kundalini energy is also seen as taking the form of a serpent. In Jewish tradition, however, the serpent is seen as the enemy of mankind… who uses [a specific form of] energy to draw humans away from G-d… “The posture in kundalini meditation requires that the spine be kept perfectly straight and erect. If a person worships in this manner, without bowing, then his spine will become infused with the kundalini energy, which is the serpent.” (Jewish Meditation, p.120). There have been documented instances of inappropriate conduct between yoga teachers and their students, resulting from the particular type of energy unleashed by yoga postures and breathing exercises. As the Hindu yogis teach, there is an innate connection between the physical (postures, breathing exercises, etc.) and the spiritual (the energy released). The kind of spirituality promoted by yoga is the exact opposite of the type the Torah wishes to instill in us. Exercise, stretch, jump, dance… but make sure it’s really kosher…

Looking relaxed and confident, Snowden told the Guardian’s reporter that he made his decision in an attempt to protect “basic liberties for people around the world.” He had hoped that President Obama would not continue the policies of previous president George W. Bush, but became disenchanted and decided to leak what he knew to the press. “The NSA has built an infrastructure that allows it to intercept almost everything,” Snowden said. Reports in both the Guardian and the Washington Post describe how telephone calls from Verizon as well as reams of internet data from sources such as Google and Facebook are “automatically ingested.” There is apparently no specific targeting, so the average Joe can safely assume that his personal information is no longer private – if indeed it ever was. Snowden had top-security clearance which included an agreement not to reveal any of the secret information

The NSA is pushing for a criminal investigation to be opened against him and the Justice Department claims that the process is already underway. There seems to be common consensus that the NSA PRISM program is legal, despite constitutional questions that have been raised regarding the vast reach of government surveillance. Nonetheless, until these questions are settled in court, the government is free to continue gathering information from its various sources. In Congress, there is bipartisan support for enhanced surveillance; most Democrats and Republicans alike remain strongly supportive of the NSA programs. Similarly, most US citizens are in favor of what they perceive as enhanced security measures. A Washington Post-Pew Research Center poll taken after details of PRISM became public indicated that 56% of those polled deemed it acceptable for the NSA to conduct surveillance of millions of Americans, and only 41% saw it as unacceptable. Thus, it seems likely that what Snowden describes as his “greatest fear” will come about: that “nothing will be done and people won’t fight to change things.” Government propaganda has succeeded in instilling fear in many Americans regarding the mainland terror threat, even though statistically speaking, the dangers are low in comparison to other, more mundane threats facing citizens. Moreover, many see US policy as actually enhancing the dangers posed by jihadis. While other countries have acted aggressively to protect themselves from terrorists in their midst, the US is virtually the only country that attempts to fight terror globally, potentially making many more enemies than necessary. What have these enemies gained from Snowden’s revelations? House John Boehner (R-Ohio) has
called Snowden a traitor, claiming that “disclosure of this information puts Americans at risk,” and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said that the leaks did “huge, grave damage” to US intelligence gathering. Greenwald, the Guardian journalist, disagrees, stating that none of the revelations “even remotely jeopardize” US security. The truth is probably somewhere in-between: Terrorist wannabees will be more careful in future, but the real professionals will continue to take great care to cover or conceal their tracks. Consider that it took almost a decade

A 900-page Senate proposal with the ponderous title, “Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013” has now cleared its first procedural hurdle in the Senate, and President Obama hopes to have a bill on his desk to sign by the fall. Major problems surrounding US immigration fact and policy have been around for decades already; what

to track down Osama bin Laden, largely due to his use of human messengers rather than electronic communications devices. So, what is Snowden? Is he a crusader for human liberties, valiantly disclosing details of government abuse of power? Is he a misguided patriot, believing himself righteous when in fact he is doing his country more harm than good? Is he just looking for publicity? Or, is the whole Snowden story part of a grand conspiracy by none other than the US government itself, looking to deflect attention from its “Big Brother” style surveillance and play on

happened, suddenly, that things seem to be moving toward some kind of a solution? President George W. Bush tried to change the system and failed. Obama promised to overhaul it in his first term, but never did so. Now, in his second term, he is making immigration reform a priority, and Republicans appear to be ready to deal. Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote in his 2012 re-election campaign, and now it’s payback time. Election results also sent a clear message to Republicans that they can no longer ignore this pivotal voting bloc.

NEWS & ANALYSIS Furthermore, there has been growing pressure from business leaders who want to ease restrictions on bringing in both highly educated immigrants as well as lower-skilled workers such as farm laborers. The problems that have to be addressed fall into four major categories: - What to do about the estimated eleven-plus million illegal immigrants already in the US - How to tighten border security - How to keep businesses from employing illegal workers - How to streamline the legal immigration system The Pew Hispanic Center, a private institution, estimates that there are 40.4 million immigrants currently in the United States, constituting 13% of the population. Of these, 11 million are legal residents, 18 million have become citizens, and around 11 million are in the country illegally. Conservative groups claim that these figures, specifically those relating to illegal immigrants, are nothing more than wild guesses, and they insist that there should be further investigation into the real numbers before legislation is passed. It is widely assumed that Hispanic immigrants in particular will vote Democrat, making this issue one that the Republican Party needs to approach with the utmost caution and foresight. So far, it hasn’t been clear exactly where the Republican Party is holding. Marco Rubio, whose name has been bandied about as a potential presidential candidate in 2016, has been caught dancing back and forth over the fence, depending on the audience he is addressing. In a recent broadcast on the Spanishlanguage Univision network, Senator Rubio told interviewers that under the proposed Senate bill, legalization will occur first and is not contingent upon border security. “First comes the

legalization. Then come the measures to secure the border. And then comes the process of permanent residence.” However, a recent radio ad by the pro-immigration group “Americans for a Conservative Direction,” formed specifically to boost conservative support for immigration reform, claimed the opposite. The ad stated: “Our border is unsecure, our laws are unenforced. We don't know who's here, what they're doing or even why. What we have now is a national security nightmare waiting to happen. But conservatives like Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan are working on plans to change that. It all starts with
Establish Border Security First.” In the end, he’ll discover that you can’t please all the people all of the time. Russia – Still a Superpower In the last month alone, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has spoken with Israel’s Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, three times. Their first conversation was initiated by Putin, who castigated Netanyahu for Israel’s air strike on Damascus, when Israel targeted weapons presumed to be headed for Hizbullah in Lebanon. Their second encounter was in Sochi, when Netanyahu attempted (unsuccessfully) to persuade Putin not to sell advanced

real border security: more fencing, more manpower and high-tech surveillance. Next, deport any illegal immigrant guilty of a serious crime. For the rest, no amnesty, period… no federal benefits… no welfare… It’s a tough approach, and conservatives are working to make it tougher. But it’s fair and enforceable.” Americans for a Conservative Direction released their debut video on April 23rd, which featured Senator Rubio making his pitch with the subtitle “Gang of 8 Immigration Plan:

His latest move is a serious proposition (or threat, depending on how one views it) to station Russian troops in the Golan, on the Syrian side of the border. Thus far the UN has vetoed any Russian presence in this volatile area, as the 1974 ceasefire accord prohibits permanent members of the UN Security Council from serving there. However, Putin could simply locate his forces a little deeper into Syrian territory, just outside the Golan separation zone. Two weeks ago, despite Obama’s insistence that there will be no American “boots on the ground” in Syria, 1000 US Marines arrived in Jordan, headed for deployment on the Syrian border. The Marines brought with them US Patriot missile interceptors and F-16 fighter planes. These US forces join the already considerable foreign fighter contingent streaming into Syrian and the surrounding regions. Hizbullah fighters are already engaging Syrian rebel troops and now Iraqi fighters have crossed the border to assist Assad and his forces. Commenting on the Russian plans to send in “peacekeepers” to the Golan, Russian lawmaker Aleksey Pushkov stated, “We must take some real action, because we cannot exclude that the Syrian-Israeli topic would be involved in large-scale military action.” Responding to Israeli reluctance to accept Putin’s offer, Pushkov warned, “Assad could be replaced by radical Islamists in comparison with whom Assad would seem an angel from heaven.” What’s Really Happening in Israel? Being a “settler” has already been dangerous for a long time. Rock ambushes are almost daily occurrences along highways and roads in Yehudah and Shomron, and Arab youths

The Negev has long been the site of violent attacks committed by Bedouin tribesmen. Thieves frequently target Jewish farms and ranches, making off with valuable livestock. In the last few weeks, there have been cases of arson, rock attacks against women and children, violent ambushes against farmers working in their fields, and an assault against a married couple with a steel bar. Attacks on Jews in the Old City are becoming more commonplace, and a few days ago, a group of Jewish girls on their way to the steps leading up to the Old City walls was attacked with bricks and bottles, injuring one girl. A few weeks ago, firebombs were thrown at homes in Har Hatzofim, not far from Hebrew University. In the nearby neighborhood of French Hill, residents live in increasing fear of their Arab neighbors – many of whom live in the same buildings as Jews. Nationalist news sources often try to pretend that the phenomenon of Arabs

NEWS & ANALYSIS moving into Jewish neighborhoods of Yerushalayim is a sign that they want to be a part of “Jewish Yerushalayim,” if or when the city is divided between Israel and the PA. The truth is likely more sinister: The Arabs are slowly taking over, all over, on both sides of the Green Line. And nobody is doing anything to stop them. Surviving Cancer The Long-Term Prognosis Nearly all childhood cancer survivors have at least one chronic health condition by the time they reach middle age, a new study, published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests. Findings indicated that a full 95 percent of childhood cancer survivors (of 1,713 studied) had a chronic health problem, such as hearing loss, heart valve abnormalities, lung problems, memory problems, or new cancers, by age 45. This is as opposed to just 38 percent of adults in the general population within the 3564 age group. The average age of the survivor group in the study was just 32, making the results even more striking. Around 80 percent of childhood cancer survivors were suffering as adults from serious, disabling, or even lifethreatening conditions. Many of their symptoms are typically associated with aging, such as cataracts (15 percent), nerve pain (20 percent), and cognitive impairment (35 percent). This led researchers to put forward the hypothesis that cancer treatment can accelerate the aging process. Additionally, the damage some types of treatment cause to healthy cell tissue can lead to future problems in the part of the body originally treated, the study suggested. Researchers stressed the need for doctors to monitor childhood cancer survivors for conditions related to their cancer, in order to minimize the

risk of significant health problems later in life. Early detection means prompt treatment as well as enhanced ability to control and limit problems via lifestyle changes and other interventions. Not all of the health problems detected by the tests were noticeable in everyday life. For instance, although tests showed that leukemia survivors who had been treated with radiation therapy experienced impaired memory, their ability to hold a job and carry out daily activities was not affected. Of course, other variables such
as general state of mind, optimism, fulfillment in life etc. were not taken into account in the study, as these are largely unquantifiable. Nonetheless, past studies that have attempted to correlate such factors with enhanced quality of life and a better survival rate have consistently indicated that people have a far larger ability to control their health than many medical studies suggest.

he goal of the Yeshiva of Belle Harbor has always been to provide an education that will prepare our students to excel in education and life. We are a Yeshiva with a history of excellence. Hurricane Sandy has caused extensive damage to Belle Harbor and the yeshiva. Unfortunately, the devastation that hit Belle Harbor has made our school building no longer fit for use. The storm waters rose over ten feet high in the building destroying everything, nothing could be salvaged. Over fifty years of work and history were destroyed in a matter of hours. At first the idea was to merge with another yeshiva in Brooklyn, however the parents and faculty of the yeshiva felt that the unique quality of the school would be lost with the merge. Instead a new board of directors was formed and everyone pulled together to help ensure that the yeshiva would remain open. A

new location for the Yeshiva was found in Brooklyn, donations poured in from individuals as well as organizations and other local yeshivas. Everything from books, desks, cleaning supplies and financial pledges were donated and the yeshiva was renamed, Yeshivat BitaHon, Yeshiva of hope. Approximately one week after the storm Yeshivat BitaHon opened its doors at its new home and welcomed back its students. Yeshivat BitaHon is proud to be able to continue its mission of providing a quality education while maintaining small class sizes to provide individualized attention to all of its students. Mindy’s husband always takes out the trash, and Slovie’s husband cooks supper once a week. And Rivky’s husband even washes dishes… Life looks a lot sweeter on the other side of the fence – but is it, really? What’s the main weapon in the arsenal of the yetzer hara? It’s the “I” word – imagination. Remember that ice-cream that looked so delicious and tempted you to break your diet “just that once”? Remember how once the spoon hit your tongue, the taste just didn’t live up to its appearance? It’s the same with everything we do wrong. It looked
so great before we took the step, but afterwards, the glamor dissipates and all we’re left with is bitterness. Or, in the words of Shlomo Hamelech, “Stolen waters are sweet.” If it’s just beyond reach, it glitters like gold. Once it’s in our hands, it loses its luster. Research from the non-Jewish world confirms this. Studies have revealed that when married people are asked the Number One question, “If you were given a second chance to pick a spouse, would you still choose your husband/wife?” a staggering eighty percent reply that they would not. This is a worrying statistic – and yet, it has a big silver lining. Let me explain. Many people get married assuming that things will go smoothly and peacefully, for isn’t that what shalom bayis is all about? When the inevitable bumps in the road appear, they panic. “What am I doing wrong?” “What is he/she doing wrong?” “Did I pick the wrong person?” Thinking, as most of us do, that everyone else is doing better, they assume that something is very wrong in their own marriage. Once they learn that eighty percent of couples are also not doing so great, they calm down.

“Oh, so arguments are usual? Marriage needs hard work to succeed? It’s not all my fault?” Hopefully at this point, the worries that the person made the wrong choice of spouse will fade away, and a new reality will be assimilated, one that features a lot of uphill struggle to make things work out. It can be good to know that other couples are also struggling. But that’s as far as it should go. You have no business knowing about the private lives of your relatives, friends, or neighbors. In the vast majority of cases, there is absolutely no to’eles to listening to lashon hara – you have no excuse to gossip. But don’t even gossip about good things! What could be wrong with that, you might ask… The phone rings at Dina’s house. She picks up, and listens to her friend Rachel excitedly describe the minivacation she and her husband just took. “It was so wonderful! Such a treat! I feel so refreshed…” Rachel gushes on and on as Dina holds the receiver further and further away from her ear… When Dina’s husband comes home that night, what sort of reception is he going to get? I’ll leave that to your

BUILDING HOMES OF HARMONY imagination… “Mah tovu ohalechah Yaakov…” The passuk doesn’t just refer to privacy issues. Of course we’re not allowed to intrude on the lives of our neighbors. But we shouldn’t even freely discuss our lives with them, either. Do you know how many marriages Facebook has ruined? “But it’s all so harmless!” you protest. Tell that to Dina. When her husband came home, he got an earfull about how the idea never even occurred to him to take her on a vacation, not even for an afternoon. Maybe Dina’s right – maybe she’s not exaggerating. But she forgot something. She forgot that Rachel’s husband never baby-sits, and spends most evenings in the office. She forgot that her own husband often helps her wash the dishes, and even mops the floor on occasion. She forgot that Rachel’s husband has faults, and that her own husband has good traits. Why would she do that? The Rosh writes in Sefer Orchos Chaim, “It is the nature of man to notice the evil and conceal or display indifference to the goodness in his life.” This is something very ingrained in our natures. We find instances of this negative focus sprinkled all through Chumash. Clearly, learning to focus on the positive is one of our tasks in this world. One of the tricks to succeeding in this is remembering that statistic quoted above. Most people don’t have it better! We just think they do… Try this simple exercise and you’ll see this principle in black and white: Make a list of traits, both positive and negative. On the positive side, you might write, “Financial support, help with housework, babysitting, sense of humor, tidy, responsible…” On the other side, you could include, “Laziness, sloppiness, bad listener…” Now give a score for your spouse.
Each good trait gets a grade from 1 to 10. Each bad trait gets a minus score from -1 to -10. Now give a score for your friend’s spouse! Be honest… You will probably need your friend’s input to get it right.
You have no excuse to gossip. But don’t even gossip about good things! And then the fun part… Give a score for yourself – if you dare! What you will probably discover is that most people have pretty much the same total score, although the individual points differ wildly between people. What does all this mean? Firstly, it means that whenever you’re tempted to focus on your spouse’s weak points, remember that you, too, have issues to deal with. Secondly, it means that your best friend with the “super-duper” husband is also struggling with her spousal issues, just not the same ones you’re facing. Jealousy is based on illusion. Don’t fall for it! The truth is that the problem of focusing only on the negative is

prevalent in all areas of life, not just in marriage. We see it in the ways in which we relate to our children, our parents, our friends… We see it in society, where differences between groups are overemphasized while similarities are brushed over. For instance, when we take an honest look at the different groups of Orthodox Jews, we see that really, Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Chassidim etc. are really all doing the same thing 99% of the time. We have the same Torah, the same focus on yiras Shamayim, the same respect for kashrus… And yet so often we focus on the 1% where we differ – the nuances in the ways we dress, certain traditions. A bachur once approached his mashgiach and related his difficulties in acclimating to yeshivah life. He described how inadequate he felt, especially in comparison to the more popular bachurim, and he mentioned one particular bachur as an example, one who was always the center of attention and had many friends. The mashgiach broke out in a wide smile and placed a hand on the bachur’s shoulder. “Let me tell you a secret,” he said. “Just yesterday, that same bachur you just mentioned, the one you claim exudes self-confidence, was sitting right here where you are sitting now, and he told me how jealous he is of you…” If we can train ourselves to focus on the good in others, we will feel inspired to give even more to them, and a beautiful cycle of giving and love will ensue, bringing the Shechinah into our homes. ”

arav Shach ztz”l was the honorary president of a certain yeshivah, and one day, the principal and mashgiach paid him a visit. “I’m afraid we are not here for a good reason,” began the principal. “There is a certain boy who has to be expelled. He’s a bad influence on the other boys, and we have no choice. Seeing as kavod Harav is president, we need your authorization to send him away.” Rav Shach sat quietly for a moment, and then asked, “What is the boy’s name?” “David Goldstein,” * the mashgiach replied. “No, no – what is the boy’s name?” Rav Shach repeated. The principal and the mashgiach both stared at the Rav, uncomprehending. “His name is, er, David Goldstein,” the principal finally said. Rav Shach looked up sharply. “What is the boy’s mother’s name, is what I meant to ask.”
“Oh, of course,” stammered the principal. “But, I don’t know his mother’s name.” He turned to the mashgiach. “Neither do I,” the mashgiach admitted. “You don’t know the boy’s name?!” Rav Shach thundered. “You are about to expel a boy from yeshivah and you didn’t daven for him? You didn’t say Tehillim for him? I no longer wish to be associated with your yeshivah.” Could the tefillos of the principal and the mashgiach have saved David and put him back on the straight path? Why didn’t they try? Didn’t they care? They did care – nobody enters the underpaid, overworked field of chinuch if he or she doesn’t care about the welfare of the students. They did care, but they didn’t believe. They didn’t believe that their tefillos were powerful enough to turn things around. They didn’t know the tremendous koach of tefillah. Many people know the famous story (true or otherwise) about the

little boy who was once strolling along a street in Vilna with his father, when they spotted the Vilna Gaon zy”a, walking towards them. “If only I could become as great as the holy Vilna Gaon,” sighed the boy. The Gaon overheard his words, and responded, “Not ‘Vilna,’ but ‘vill nor.’” In other words, “If that is truly your sole desire…” But really? Is that how Harav Eliyahu of Vilna became so great? According to his prime talmid, Harav Chaim of Volozhin ztz”l, it was not his master’s genius and inborn talent that enabled him to become what he did. “If you would have heard the birchos haTorah of the holy Gaon,” he once answered a questioner, “you would have immediately understood how he merited to grow so great in Torah. The Gaon wept and begged Hakadosh Baruch Hu to give him wisdom and understanding, and his tefillos were answered.” ***************

All too often we daven for something only to have our request denied. We tell ourselves that “sometimes, a Father says no.” This is a valid hashkafah. Nonetheless, we should also consider another possible reason for the “denial” of our request. Imagine yourself davening for your child to succeed in learning. It’s something you want deeply – but all the same, it doesn’t lie uppermost in your conscious mind, at every single waking moment. Now consider someone who is davening for the physical,

not spiritual, life of his child. If your child was, chalilah, deathly ill, with no remedy in sight, would not your tefillah carry that much more intensity? And so, when your son doesn’t progress in learning as much as you might have liked, can you truly say that your tefillah was answered in the negative? Was there a true, deep tefillah to answer in the first place? “Once, someone asked the Rebbe [Nachman of Breslov] how he could draw close to Hashem. The Rebbe told him to learn certain Torah topics. When the person replied that he did not have the ability to learn those topics, the Rebbe responded that through tefillah one can accomplish everything. With prayer one can gain all good, whether learning, the ability to daven, kedushah…” (Likutei Moharan Tinyana 111) On another occasion, Harav Nosson approached his Rebbe and, heartbroken, asked him why Hakadosh Baruch Hu was still not answering a specific tefillah of his, despite his having poured out his soul in prayer. “It is from Dovid Hamelech that we learn the true meaning of tefillah,” Rebbe Nachman replied. “When he said, ‘My strength is dried out like a clay pot, and my tongue sticks to my throat’ [Tehillim 22:16] he meant it literally. Dovid Hamelech had totally exhausted his physical strength in his tefillos to Hashem. Can you honestly say the same of yourself?”

H
erbs have a long and glorious history when it comes to curing illness, from the mildest to most severe cases of disease. Although the pre-antibiotic age was more dangerous in some ways than today, knowledge of natural medicine was far more extensive. But even today you don’t need to be an amateur botanist in order to take advantage of nature’s cures. Often, you don’t even need to buy expensive little glass bottles full of tinctures or ointments. Many of the remedies Hashem put into creation are already waiting for you, right there in your kitchen.
The Humble Potato The juice of a fresh, raw potato can be used to treat a variety of ailments. But you don’t even need to juice it – all you need is to wash, peel, and then grate this cheap and readily-available vegetable. In a pinch, you can simply slice it and the juices will come oozing out. For sunburn or other skin inflammation: Coarsely grate or thinly slice raw potato (be careful not to use potatoes with green areas). Place the slices, or the grated potato, in a gauze cloth, on the affected area. This is what’s called a poultice. For tick bites: Make a poultice of raw grated potato held together with a little flour, and tape it to the bite, to help draw out any unwelcome invaders. For mastitis: Make a poultice of raw grated potato and
apply directly, covered with a clean cloth. Change the potato when it dries out. This is best used in the early stages of infection or in cases of a blocked duct. It will draw out the heat of the inflammation, localize the infection, and unblock clogged tubes. Don’t panic and rush to take antibiotics, which can cause a host of other problems. Hot compresses of plain water applied often will also help. Almost all cases will resolve by themselves, if nursing is continued. For eye inflammation or irritation: Peel and grate a potato and put in a gauze cloth. Lie down and place the poultice on the affected, closed eye. Leave in place for five to ten minutes, or longer if you can. Repeat as often as you like.
Easy Oatmeal No, you don’t eat it, and you don’t even have to cook it… For eczema or dermatitis: Take one cup of edible oats and place them in a handkerchief. Tie over the faucet of your bath and let the water run through it. At night, before you go to bed, soak in an oatmeal tub for twenty to thirty minutes. This will calm any itching, and the natural oils in the oats will soften the skin and form a protective barrier. Applying a moisturizer to damp skin after the bath will also help. For oily skin: Grind up two tablespoons of oats, sift, and mix with witch hazel to form a paste. Smooth onto your skin and massage thoroughly but gently for about a minute.

Fragrant Parsley The Gemara tells us that an expectant mother who eats parsley will have attractive children. Parsley’s good for a lot of other things, too – both internal and external. Parsley increases the flow of urine (if you have kidney disease, use with caution), and simply adding it to your diet will decrease the likelihood of suffering from urinary tract infections. A parsley facial: Do you have little red veins on your face? Parsley juice is reputed to be the cure. Blend up some parsley and beat in an egg yolk. It will be a bit watery but that doesn’t matter. Lie down for a quarter hour with it smeared over your face. You’ll need to do this a number of times before seeing results. For bruises: Take your blended parsley and place in a cloth and apply as a compress. For bad breath: Chew a few raw parsley leaves. Parsley contains chlorophyll, the same substance used in some commercial breath fresheners. But a sprig of parsley is much cheaper. Chew slowly – the longer it’s in your mouth, the better. The parsley doesn’t just deodorize your mouth; the juices actually neutralize odors coming from the throat and stomach.
Tangy Apple-Cider Vinegar Apple-cider vinegar is acidic and bacteria don’t like an acidic environment. As for the smell – you either love it or hate it…

For swimmer’s ear: Dilute a small amount of vinegar with an equal amount of distilled water and use one drop in each ear after swimming. The mixture should stay fresh for about a week. For a “roiz”: A roiz, that characteristic red-streaked inflammation in the leg, is actually a strep infection. Treat by painting the affected area with apple-cider vinegar and then wrapping with cling film. Get as much rest as possible, preferably with the foot elevated above the rest of the body. Of course, if symptoms worsen significantly, seek medical advice.
Weepy Onion These simple remedies will take away your cause for tears… For insect bites and stings: Cut a slice of white onion and tape it onto a sting for an hour. Don’t mash the onion, just cut a thick slice and tape on, after removing the stinger. This will cool the skin and draw out the poison. For a persistent, unproductive cough: Slice an onion and place in a little dish next to the bedside before going to sleep. That annoying cough will simply disappear, due to the onion vapors released.

Pitta Bread • • •
1 tbsp dried yeast 1 tbsp sugar 1 cup water
Mix together, adding a little flour, enough to make a batter-like consistency. Leave for around 10 minutes, until batter becomes frothy – a sign the yeast started to get to work. (This initial stage promotes better rising later.)
Looking for new recipes to brighten up Shalosh Seudos? Or perhaps just something original for a weekday supper, or a lunch in the park? In my bread-baking days, when I was pushed for time and didn’t want to wait for loaves to bake in the oven, pitta was the obvious choice. Once the dough has risen, you can have your bread ready to eat within 20 minutes or so. Although it might seem timeconsuming at first, with practice, you can do the rolling and baking stages simultaneously, baking one pitta while you prepare the next one for the pan. Pitta bread is definitely best eaten fresh
Then add: • 1 tbsp salt • 1 tbsp oil • 1 tbsp vinegar • 500g / 4 ½ cups flour – strong white bread flour, or whole-wheat is fine Add the flour gradually, mixing well, until the dough is sticky but you can begin to actually knead it rather than just mix. (Yes, your hands will get very messy, and yes, you can use a mixer – but why bother, when this way, all you have to wash at the end are a bowl and your hands?) Now add more flour slowly, until you can knead without loads of dough sticking to your hands. Once you feel the air being punched out of the dough when you knead it down, you’re almost done. Keep kneading for another minute or so, and then add a little oil and grease the dough all over (this stops the dough from drying out as it rises, especially on hot summer days). Cover with a towel or loosely with a plastic bag and leave to rise. (Note: There is no sha’ilah of hafrashas challah for such a small amount of dough.) When the dough is roughly double its initial size, or, if you aren’t sure, you push it down and it feels like you deflated it, you can get to work on the next stage. Divide dough into around 12 pieces, flatten them, and roll, on a floured surface, into rounds about 20cm/8in wide and about 7mm/ ½in thick. Heat a medium-large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once it’s very hot, gently lay one dough round inside and bake for around 15 seconds. Turn over, being careful not to puncture the dough, and bake for another minute, until you see large air pockets blowing up inside the dough. Now turn again, still being careful not to puncture, and you should see the pitta puff up. Bake for another few minutes, depending on how brown you want it to be, then remove from pan and wrap lightly in a clean towel.

If you have trouble getting your kids to eat wholewheat, you might be pleasantly surprised to see how eagerly they will eat wholewheat pitta! Even the next day it’s still tasty and soft, if you wrap it well, and you can
freeze it, too. The fishball recipe is tasty and healthy, since the fish is cooked rather than fried, and both this recipe and that for the cabbage salad couldn’t be much easier to prepare. Have a happy and healthy summer!
Moroccan Fishballs in Tomato-Lemon Sauce • 2 slices bread without crusts • 1kg/2lb minced fish (eg. cod or haddock) • 2 chopped onions • 8 chopped garlic cloves • 1tsp turmeric • ½ tsp ginger • 1 bunch fresh cilantro (coriander),

chopped 1 egg cayenne pepper (optional) 150ml / 2/3 cup oil 4 ripe diced tomatoes 1 tsp paprika 1 small lemon, diced
Soak bread in a bowl with cold water for 10 minutes, then squeeze dry. Add fish, half the onions & garlic, half the spices & cilantro. Add egg. Mix well and chill while you make the sauce. Heat oil, add remaining onions & garlic, fry for around 5 minutes until soft. Add remaining spices, tomatoes, remaining cilantro, cook over medium heat until it becomes a sauce. Stir in diced lemon. Take the chilled fish mixture and form into walnut-size balls with wet hands, flattening slightly. Place in sauce and cook for around 20 minutes, turning over a few times.

1 cabbage, sliced thin 3 tbsp olive oil 2 chopped onions 6 chopped garlic cloves ½ chopped green pepper 1 tsp curry spice/turmeric – any

combination you like few cardamom seeds 1 chopped fresh chilli pepper 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes pinch of sugar juice of ½ to 1 lemon
Cook cabbage in boiling water for around 5 minutes, till soft, then drain well. Heat oil and fry onions till soft, then add half garlic and green pepper, cook till pepper softens being careful not to burn the garlic. Add spices, cook another 2 minutes. Add cabbage, tomatoes, sugar, cover and cook over low heat till sauce thickens. Add lemon juice and remaining garlic, cook for another 10 minutes.
