HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
Learning Enhancers By Chana Mendelowitz
A
fter the summer break, it takes time to get back into routine. For weeks at a stretch, many of us have been allowing our brains to “relaxâ€? – which makes the transition into the new school year a challenge for even the most academically inclined. Some of us have trouble concentrating and retaining material even at the best of times, for a wide variety of reasons. But don’t despair! Brain trouble has been around for as long as the brain itself, and as usual, the refuah has preceded the makkah. Herbal learning enhancers abound in nature and they are virtually free of the nasty side effects that are part and parcel of taking pharmaceutical drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. As with any other health issue, herbs are only one prong of the holistic approach that should be adopted to deal with the problem at hand. Getting enough sleep is essential, as is proper nutrition. What a shame to see mothers buying expensive vitamin supplements, only to effectively neutralize their effect when they can’t resist “dosingâ€? their children simultaneously with sugar DQG UHĂ€QHG Ă RXU SURGXFWV 6XIĂ€FLHQW B vitamins in the diet is also of paramount importance; too little of the B vitamins and energy levels will drop, concentration will be poor, and QHUYRXV Ă€GJHWLQJ DQG VWUHVV LQFUHDVH Sugar overload is a culprit here, too, as
too much sugar dilutes the impact of B vitamins in the body. But if you’ve already taken care of the basics, and things still aren’t as good as they could be, try some of the following time-tested herbs. Be patient; unlike with pharmaceutical drugs, you won’t usually see immediate improvements, but nonetheless, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised at how mere “vegetablesâ€? can enhance your brain power. Rosemary If you were thinking that you surely need something expensive and exotic to deal with an organ as sophisticated as the brain, then think again. Rosemary has a track record going back thousands of years in treating all manner of brain issues ranging from forgetfulness, poor concentration, absent-mindedness, and the common headache. In the days of the ancient Roman Empire, students used to braid sprigs of the fresh herb into their hair during examinations, in order to remain alert and focused. Luckily, there are other, less FRQVSLFXRXV ZD\V WR UHDS WKH EHQHĂ€WV of this fragrant herb: Tea: Take 1 ½ tablespoons of dried rosemary, or a 1 to 2 inch piece of the fresh herb, and simmer in 8 oz ZDWHU IRU Ă€YH PLQXWHV <RX FDQ DOVR pour boiling water over the herb in a PXJ DQG OHW LW VWHHS FRYHUHG IRU Ă€YH

There is some evidence that rosemary has an anti-Alzheimer’s effect, making it a good idea for older people to drink this tea on a regular basis. As an added bonus, rosemary boosts the immune system, making you less susceptible to cold viruses and the like. 7LQFWXUH 7DNH D VPDOO MDU DQG ÀOO it half-way with dried rosemary, or HQWLUHO\ ÀOO LW ZLWK WKH IUHVK KHUE $GG vodka, 80 proof (100 is better if you FDQ JHW KROG RI LW WR ÀOO WKH MDU 6KDNH WKH MDU GDLO\ IRU WKH ÀUVW ZHHN DQG WKHQ OHW VLW IRU DQRWKHU ÀYH ZHHNV 7KH liquid will turn a vivid green color. Strain the herb out and store. A daily dose would be a teaspoon-full. Sage Sage can be used in place of rosemary if you prefer the taste and aroma. Sage tea is also an astringent, making it an excellent choice if you are trying to shake off a cold and need to clear out your nasal passages and sinuses. Its generally drying properties are also helpful if you’re the kind of person who sweats a lot when nervous, as it reduces perspiration. But because it works so well, it’s not advisable to drink sage tea for more than a few days at a time. Sage and rosemary both seem

to work on the brain by protecting acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain responsible for thinking, learning, and retaining knowledge. Gotu Kola Gotu kola is a well-known herb used to stimulate brain functioning. It is renowned as a memory enhancer and is also effective in combating anxiety and depression. It improves blood circulation and will help you concentrate and focus intently for longer spans of time. Gotu kola can be taken in capsule form; recommended dose is between 1000 and 2000mg, twice a day. If you take it long-term, alternate six weeks on with two weeks off, so that your body won’t become too accustomed to it, reducing its effectiveness.

It appears to boost circulation to the brain, leaving you feeling more alert and focused. A good choice for students, in combination
with a good multi-vitamin including B-complex. Lemon Balm Lemon balm’s delicious fragrance makes it a good choice as a portable “pick-me-up to be carried around in your pocketbook or jacket pocket whenever you need a quick sniff to clear your mind. Korean ginseng is what’s known as an adaptogen, which means that it helps your body to adapt to environmental stressors. As with the other herbs listed here, ginseng has a long and reputable history of helping people deal with challenges in an optimal way, combating stress, stimulating the brain to learn more quickly, and balancing hormone levels and moods. Ginseng has to be taken for a while before its effects make themselves felt. It is best taken for six weeks and then stopped for two weeks before restarting. Take 20 drops of tincture, three times a day. Gingko Biloba The leaves of this medicinal herb have long been used as a memory booster and source of brain nutrients. Gingko biloba is an antioxidant that improves general brain functioning

An open letter to the family of an upcoming simcha:
Most of your friends are missing important pictures! My name is David Friedman from )ULHGPDQ¶V 3hotography. I know that the fact above sounds shocking, but after speaking to thousands of people who have had pictures made at their simchas and seeing samples of thousands of simcha photos, I have seen that most simchas miss important pictures. We all know that missing pictures can wreak havoc in Shulem Bayis and ruin the relationship with family PHPEHUV RI ZKRP LPSRUWDQW SLFWXUHV ZHUHQ¶W WDNen and hope that it does not happen to us. After doing extensive research to find out why such important pictures were missing in such a large percentage of weddings I have found that the main reason was that: Nobody took the time to find out what pictures were important to you until after the simcha when it was already too late, and just like everything in life no picture can be taken for granted if it was not discussed. )ULHGPDQ¶V 3hotography, which is the studio I founded Bezras Hashem, has been around doing quality photography since 1988. We have the expertise and knowledge which has been built up by serving the community for close to 30 years, and with this background I personally guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at your simcha. We have used our experience to put together a formula to make sure that every person that hires us will receive 100% full coverage of all their dream pictures at any simcha and to offer our 100% Full coverage guarantee.
100% Full coverage guarantee We guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at the simcha How does it work? After you book )ULHGPDQ¶V SKRWRJUDSK\ for your simcha you will QHHG WR VFKHGXOH RXU XQLTXH ³Discuss Your Dreams´ SUH simcha consultation. We recommend that anyone you want to satisfy with pictures of your simcha should be at the consultation including: Chosen, Kallah, both sets of parents, or bar mitzvah boy & any sibling, grandparent, aunt etc. that you would want to satisfy with the pictures. At the ³Discuss <RXU 'UHDPV´ consultation, you will meet with a photography expert- an expert in what is available in photography- where the photography expert will explain to you what is available based on the plan you chose and what is the most popular while listening to you with the goal of helping you to clarify your dreams, needs, and wants. The photography expert will help you clearly state what you want and that will save you a lot of headaches trying to figure it on your own. You will also be spared the aggravation of not getting the pictures that were important to you when the simcha is over.
At the simcha! All your dream photographs will be taken iy”h.

What Do You Lose By Winning? By Rabbi Shemaya Landau

t the end of his Laws of Chanukah, Rambam brings an intriguing halachah regarding the relative importance of lighting Chanukah and Shabbos candles. He writes: “If a person KDV >VXIĂ€FLHQW PHDQV WR EX\ ZKDW he needs] for Shabbos lights and Chanukah lights, or Shabbos lights and [wine for] Kiddush, Shabbos lights FRPH Ă€UVW EHFDXVH RI >WKH LPSRUWDQFH of] tranquility in the home. [This is obvious] because the Holy Name was erased in order to make peace between a man and his wife. How great is peace – the entire Torah was given only in order to make peace in the world, as it says: ‘All its ways are pleasant and all its paths are peaceful.â€? Ordinarily, erasing the Holy Name of Hashem is a terrible sin. When a sofer writes the Shem Hashem in a sefer Torah, WHĂ€OOLQ, or mezuzah, he takes the utmost care to do so with precision, and there are scribes who immerse in the PLNYHK prior to each writing of Hashem’s Name. If, FKDV Y¡VKDORP, the Name is written incorrectly, it cannot be simply erased. Instead, a special method is used whereby the entire top layer of the parchment is removed with the wrongly-written Name intact, leaving a blank area below in which to insert the new word. $QG \HW WKHUH LV RQH VSHFLĂ€F instance when the Torah tells us that the Name is to be written and then erased! How can this be? If a man suspects his wife of having

and continue her life. Although she would have to be divorced from her husband, she would be free to marry another man. Why would anyone prefer death over such an option? One answer is that the Torah is teaching us a lesson in human psychology – how hard it is to confess RQH¡V ZURQJGRLQJV LQ SXEOLF <HV the sotah actually prefers to die a terrible death rather than admit to her sin. How much more so should we forego our honor in order not to embarrass another human being! Furthermore, the Torah chooses to teach us this lesson GDYND with regard to a matter between husband and wife, the relationship where there is the most at stake and where feelings are the most easily wounded. In his Igros Kodesh (volume ten, p.289), the Lubavitcher Rebbe ztzâ€?l beautifully elucidates the underlying concept: “Even if you think that you are in the right, and even when this is actually so, you should go about achieving your goals in a pleasant and peaceful manner. Now, as we approach the <DPLP 1RUDLP we remind ourselves how vulnerable we are, how dependent we are on Hashem’s mercy at every moment. We know that the 0L]EH\DFK, the altar in the %HLV +DPLNGDVK, is where atonement was granted and where prayers were recited for the peace of the entire Jewish people. If the 0L]EH\DFK is crying, this tells us that divorce is a matter that affects the entire cosmos. Today, we see divorce rates rising to unheard-of proportions, and there is a reason for this. Hello Everyone, I usually tell my patients that I’m like a farmer. I can plant the seeds, add some fertilizer, and make sure there’s enough sunlight. But I can’t make the plant grow! The same is true in giving chiropractic adjustments. I can adjust the spine, tune the nervous system, and make sure you are getting proper nutrition. But I can’t heal you! Once your body is restored to as close to a perfect state as is possible, the power that created the body can heal the body. The potential for healing is increased. But the healing itself ALWAYS comes from our Creator. Listen to this story.

The midwife said that the baby was already large, but they would give it some more time to see if she would be able to give birth naturally without having to induce her. I then evaluated the uterine muscles by external palpation to make sure there were no spasms Ǥ ϔ ǡ stimulated precise acupuncture points to get the labor going.
She called me that same afternoon saying that her contractions “are becoming stronger”. I told her to come back for a second adjustment the same day to help it along. We repeated the same procedure that evening, and I got an email from her midwive Yetty the very next day wishing us all a Mazal Tov! She had her baby an hour and a half later. How many times have I seen this exact same scenario, that the doctors want to do caesarean, or induce prematurely? I can’t say that this procedure is 100% effective in all cases, but more times than not, we get Ǥ ϐ from chiropractic care during pregnancy for situations like this as well as helping the baby turn from a breach position, in addition to basic pregnancy related back pains. I have been a chiropractor for 33 years, and these Chiropractic Miracles continue to inspire me every single time. Why? Because this gives me a chance to witness the Miracle of Life! Until next time...... To Your Health,

Even in his later years, he was known for his great hasmadah, learning for long hours at a stretch, often for entire nights, banishing sleep from his eyelids and forging forwards, ever forwards in the great Yam haTalmud. Molasses, just like table sugar, comes from sugar cane. The roots of this plant extend extremely deep under the soil, usually around 15 feet down but sometimes as deep as 19 feet. This means that the plant bypasses depleted topsoil and instead feeds off nutrient-dense soil from much further down. Of course, molasses doesn’t look as pretty as granulated sugar, and for many years, it was not even considered to be suitable for human consumption. Anyone looking to buy it had to head to an animal feed store and pretend that it was for his livestock. During other periods, molasses was “poor man’s sugar as opposed to the sparkling white substance that graced the rich man’s

What many people don’t know, however, is that not only does sugar not add any nutritional value to our diet, it can actually leech the nutrients out of the foods we eat. 0LQHUDOV HVSHFLDOO\ DUH à XVKHG RXW of the body when sugar is consumed in excess. Absorption of protein, too, is hindered. (As an aside, this is the basis of one theory relating to pinworm infestation: that the body becomes a host not because of excess sugar consumption itself, but because that excess depletes the body of proteins needed to keep parasites at bay.) Molasses, on the other hand, is a rich source of nutrients. Furthermore, it has a low glycemic index, meaning that its glucose

Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of calcium. Calcium, one of the most important minerals in the body, is involved in a variety of physiological activities essential to life, including the ability of the heart and other muscles to contract, blood clotting, the conduction of nerve impulses to and from the brain, regulation of enzyme activity, and cell membrane function. Calcium is needed to form and maintain strong bones and teeth during youth and adolescence, and to help prevent the loss of bone that can occur during menopause and as a result of rheumatoid arthritis. Calcium binds to and removes toxins from the colon, thus reducing the risk of colon cancer, and because it is involved in nerve conduction, may help prevent migraine attacks. Like calcium, potassium plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. PERSPECTIVES – THE SECOND LOOK
Rosh Hashanah What’s New? “Hamelech‌â€?
For many of us, this is the highlight of Rosh Hashanah GDYHQLQJ. After all, how many times do we proclaim Hashem as king on a regular day? Oh, only about a hundred‌ Every EUDFKDK we make includes the phrase “PHOHFK KD¡RODP,â€? and even the dramatic “Hamelechâ€? is a regular feature in 6KDFKDULV on Shabbos, right after 1LVKPDV. What makes Rosh Hashanah different? *************** Chazal teach us that Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of the world, or rather, of the creation of man, the pinnacle of creation. However, we refer to Hashem as being “PHFKDGHVK NRO \RP WDPLG PD¡DVHK EHUHLVKLVâ€? – renewing creation every single day. Is there a difference between this renewal and the renewal that takes place only once a year? Answering this question, the Ari Hakadosh writes that Rosh Hashanah is literally a reversion to the situation that prevailed towards the end of the
Ă€UVW ZHHN RI WKH ZRUOG ULJKW EHIRUH Adam and Chava were divided into two from one body. The Zohar Hakadosh explains that Rosh Hashanah is a time of GLQ, of great judgment, when the 5LEERQR VKHO 2ODP weighs the very existence of the universe. Should creation be renewed for another year, or should everything revert to tohu Y¡YRKX – total oblivion? It all depends on us. Just as the original creation depended on the Jewish People’s future acceptance of Torah and RO PDOFKXV 6KDPD\LP (the yoke of Heaven), so too does the renewal of the world on Rosh Hashanah hinge on our decision to accept Hashem’s kingship over us. But if so, then why do we so intently focus on WHVKXYDK in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah? What do our past sins have to do with accepting Hashem as King in the future? In the business world, there is a concept known as “rising to the level of one’s incompetency.â€? In general, a person starts out on the bottom rung of a company, and works his way up the ranks, receiving promotion after promotion. But he won’t know that he reached the point of “incompetencyâ€? until he reaches it. There is no concept of drawing imaginary lines in the sand and saying lechatchilah that “I can never be a manager. I’m simply not cut out for it.â€? How can he know, until he tries? This is an appropriate analogy for the way in which we should approach DYRGDV +DVKHP. Too often, we hear people resigning themselves to the way they are: “That’s just me – I have a short fuse,â€? or “I could never learn for more than an hour a day,â€? or “I know that some people don’t think that I’m really within the bounds of W]QLXV, but this is as far as I can go.â€? Spicy Moroccan Salmon 8 tablespoons olive oil 4 tablespoons flour 4 (6 to 8-ounce) salmon fillets (skin and bones removed) 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon pepper 3 heaping tablespoons minced fresh garlic 1 serrano chili, chopped 1 jalapeno, chopped 2 teaspoons paprika 2 teaspoons cumin
Serves 6-8
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper ¼ teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons tomato paste ¼ cup water 2 tablespoons lemon juice (fresh is better but not absolutely necessary) 2 teaspoons sugar Garnish: Chopped fresh cilantro
In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium high heat. Season fish with salt and pepper and dredge with flour. Shake off excess. Add to skillet and cook for about 4 minutes per side – or until golden. Remove to a plate covered with paper towels. In a food processor, purée garlic, chilies, paprika, cumin, cayenne, cinnamon and 2 tablespoons oil. Heat remaining 4 tablespoons oil in skillet over low heat. Add garlic-chili mixture. Cook, stirring constantly for 30 seconds. Gently pour in tomato paste and water. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook for 30 more seconds. Stir in lemon juice and sugar. Return salmon to pan and bring to a gentle simmer. Cover pan, reduce heat and simmer until is cooked through – about 12 minutes (I like my fish to be really cooked!). Remove from heat. Serve warm or a room temperature, topped with the sauce and sprinkled with some fresh cilantro, if desired.
