The Shmuz on the Parsha

The Danger of Machlokes Parshas Korach

“…Dossom and Aviram went out upright at the entrance of their tents with their wives, children, and infants.” - I16:27 The Rebellion Korach, carried away by jealousy, led two hundred and fifty men in rebellion against Moshe and HASHEM. These were all great individuals; they had all witnessed Moshe going up to Har Sinai to accept the Torah, and they all heard HASHEM speak through Moshe. Yet they willfully and intentionally set out to depose Moshe – to prove that he had veered off from that which HASHEM had told him. Moshe, recognizing the danger that they were placing themselves in, did everything he could to get them to back down. Nevertheless, they remained steadfast in their revolt, and marched to their destruction. In the end the entire congregation, man, woman infant, and child – died a terrible death. Rashi explains that this teaches us how terrible machlokes (conflict) is. “Bais Din (Jewish court) doesn’t punish a person until he is thirteen years old. The heavenly tribunal doesn’t punish a person

14

until he is twenty years old. Yet here, even the nursing infants were punished.” That is how far the punishment for conflict goes. What was the sin of the infants? This Rashi is very difficult to understand: Clearly, he is saying that the nursing babies were punished. Yet what sins could infants be guilty of? An infant doesn’t have premeditated thought. The infants were completely unaware of what was going on. How could they be punished? The answer to this question requires a deeper understanding of some of the systems that HASHEM uses to run the world. Immutable Laws of Nature HASHEM created this world with immutable laws of nature. Gases tend to expand. Heat tends to rise. Heavy objects tend to fall. These laws are the bedrock foundation of this world that govern all of physicality throughout the cosmos. These laws, however, are neither cruel nor kind. For instance, if a baby is left unattended on a changing table and falls,

likely he will be injured. The result may be tragic, but we wouldn’t accuse gravity of being heartless. Gravity doesn’t judge and it doesn’t decide. It is a fact—a part of reality. Just as HASHEM created laws that govern the physical world, so too, He created laws that govern the spiritual world. These as well are specific and exact, and have real consequences. One of these laws is din (justice). The basic tenet of din is accountability— simple and unadulterated. You are responsible for what you do. However, while, din, loosely translates as justice it is quite different than man’s understanding of what is just and proper. Din is very demanding. Din is very exacting. It makes no room for mitigating circumstances. If something comes about through an action of yours, you are responsible – whether you intended it, or not. Whether you recognized the consequences, or not. If you brought it about or if through you it came about, the results are attributed to you and you are held accountable. Din is just. Din is appropriate. If you

are to be rewarded for what you have done right, you should be punished for what you have done wrong. Before HASHEM created the world, He considered (if it could be) creating it with the Middas Ha’Din (strict justice) in operation. However, if this system were in place, no man could survive. The Mesillos Yesharim (Perek 4) explains that if din were in force, any sin that man might commit would bring about one result – his immediate death. The Kings of Kings said not to do X, and you violated His wishes! The consequence of any transgression would be death, immediate and irrevocable. And so, the world couldn’t exist. Therefore, HASHEM created the world using the Middas HaRachamim – the system of mercy. Rachamim introduces mitigating factors into the equation—You have to take into account who the person is, where he is coming from, what he was going through at the time… When taken in context, what the person did isn’t as egregious. Keeping in mind everything else that was going on at time, what he did is more understandable. And now a person is given leeway. He’s given time to understand the gravity of his actions, and the concept of teshuvah is possible. The result is that the operating principle in our world is compassion. Justice, however, cannot be ignored. So both rachamim and din are in existence, and both have their say. The balance, however, between them can change. If you envision a slide rule, with din on one side and rachamim on the other,. The slide can be moved so that more of one or the other is introduced into the equation. If an average day might be 50/50, there are some days with more mercy, like Yom Kippur, which is a day of forgiveness. The person doesn’t change, and the act doesn’t change, but the system of judgment changes, and that change makes all the

difference in the world. There are other things that can influence the balance. Chazal tell us that the middah with which you judge others determines the way that you are judged. The amount of strictness or compassion that you exude becomes the standard by which you are then measured. And extremes in attitude or behaviors can bring extremes in the system of judgment. Machlokes has the power to bring about extremes. When people cleave to hostile groups, their opinions and attitudes become severe. There is no tolerance, no understanding. You are on our side or theirs — you are a tzaddik or a rasha. Because the divide is sharp and acceptance non-existent, the middah of din flares, and when that happens, judgment is at its strictest. The Result of Conflict This seems to be the answer to Rashi. Korach launched a rebellion, bringing about a complete divide in the nation. Because of this, complete din was brought into operation. Now there were no mitigating circumstances. No considerations. If something comes about through you, you are responsible. And so, the nursing infants were judged. Not for their intentions, not for their plan, but for the outcome. Through them the rebellion was larger. It was no longer two hundred and fifty men against HASHEM. It was now two hundred and fifty men and their wives and children. Each person added to the group. Whether they recognized what they were doing or not, whether they realized it or not, the revolution was larger, and the price had to be paid. This is a powerful lesson for us on two levels. Firstly, in terms of understanding the extent of responsibility and the remarkable advantage of being judged with mercy. And secondly, in a very practical

manner. While no one wants to be involved in a machlokes, unfortunately it is only too easy to get pulled in. Often, without meaning or intending to, we find ourselves on one side or the other, and before we know it, we are deep into the thick and thin of it. The Chofetz Chaim writes that machlokes is like a raging fire – anyone nearby gets burned. By recognizing the effect of such disputes and the mortal danger that we place ourselves and our families in when we get drawn into machlokes, it wise for us to heed the advice of our sages and run from it like we would run from a fire.

The Chazal

This Rashi says that machlokes is so terrible that even the nursing babies were punished.

Question

What sins could infants be guilty of?

Answer

Din demands that if something comes about through an action of yours, you are responsible – whether you intended it, or not. Whether you recognized the consequences, or not.

Life lesson

By recognizing the effect of such disputes and the mortal danger that we place ourselves in when we get drawn into machlokes, it wise for us to heed the advice of our sages and run from it like we would run from a fire.

Caretaker of Venice’s Jewish Cemeteries

by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller

“The spot where we usually rode was a Jewish cemetery whose walls had been pulled down and stones overturned by the French.” So recorded Richard Belgrave Hoppner, Britain’s Consul in Venice in the 1700s. He, along with the famous British poets Lord Byron and Percy Shelley and others, used to canter their horses through the ruined Jewish cemetery of Beit Chaim on the Lido island in Venice.

26

Beit Chaim (“House of Life” in Hebrew) is Europe’s second-oldest surviving Jewish cemetery. Founded in 1386, its oldest legible headstone dates from 1389. When the cemetery was established in the Middle Ages, Venice was home to one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities. At its peak in the 1600s, over 5,000 Jews called the beautiful island city home. In fact, the term “ghetto” comes from Venice, where Jews were confined live on the island of Ghetto within the city. In time, Ghetto became a bustling hub and a major center of life, art and commerce within Venice. Forbidden from burying their dead in the main islands of Venice, Jews were forced to place their cemeteries on the relatively far-flung island of Lido, which was then a swampy, unappealing area. When funerals were held, Jewish mourners were ferried between the city’s islands of Lido and Ghetto by gondola.

www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

By the time Byron rode his horses across the graves in Beit Chaim, the city’s Jewish community had already begun to decline. Shelly described the desecrated burial grounds as a sandy, windswept wasteland. Today, Venice’s Jewish community is sadly decimated. Years of persecution, the Holocaust, and the city’s declining fortunes in general have seen an exodus of Jews leaving the area. Fewer than 500 Venetian Jews remain, many of them elderly. One of these remaining Jews is Aldo Izzo, an 86 year old self-appointed caretaker of Venice’s Jewish cemeteries. (In addition to Beit Chaim, he also tends a ‘newer’ Jewish cemetery founded in the 1700s nearby, and also sadly desecrated and neglected.) Mr. Izzo grew up knowing these sites well. As a child, he played in Beit Chaim. During World War Two, he survived by hiding in local apartments and even

hid at times from Fascists in the Jewish cemetery. Like many Venetians, Mr. Izzo pursued a career in sailing. For years he was the captain of merchant ships that delivered goods all over the world. He remembers with particular fondness visiting Montreal, Toronto and Chicago. When he retired in the 1990s, he and his wife moved to the Venetian island of Lido, and he immersed himself in local Jewish volunteer positions.

The neglected Jewish cemeteries exerted a particular pull on Mr. Izzo. He started tending them, cleaning and fixing their broken headstones and weeding the plots. He also started offering tours of Beit Chaim to visitors from all over the world. Dressed in impeccable Italian style, a kippah on his head, Mr. Izzo leads tourists through his beloved cemetery, pointing out some unusual features found only in Venice. A few of the tombstones depict deer travelling in boats, a reference to the flight of Spanish Jews, some of whom made their way to settle in Venice. Many of the gravestones have beautiful rococo details; some features pictures of cherubs or coats of arms. Some stones have a hole in their base. Mr. Izzo speculates that this might reflect the idea that one’s soul escapes from the earthly body. Some gravestones appear to have been used more than once, “something very unusual and even forbidden,” Mr. Izzo explains to visitors, explaining the uniqueness of Venice’s cemeteries. Many of the graves had been plundered; headstones, as well as bodies, had been

desecrated, removed and damaged. Slowly, over 35 years, Mr. Izzo has repaired as much of the cemeteries as he can. When he’s unable to find the correct grave for the many headstones that have been removed or smashed, he hangs these broken headstones around the cemetery’s walls, a reminder, at least, that these stones once marked the burial places of people who were beloved and valued. “This cemetery has had a tormented life,” Mr. Izzo explained in 1995, when he was embarking on his massive restoration project. Accustomed to a life keeping ships’ logs, Mr. Izzo keeps records of his work in the cemeteries and of the continued decline of Venice’s dwindling Jewish population. He maintains records of the burial plots that are still unused, keeping this valuable list for Venice’s few remaining Jews. He also records the deaths of Venice’s remaining Jews, as well as keeping records of who remains. Mr. Aldo’s wife died in 2016; he now lives alone in his Lido apartment. His eyesight is going, but as long as he’s able, Mr. Izzo plans to continue tending Venice’s Jewish cemeteries.

Long neglected, Aldo Izzo is restoring Venice’s centuriesold Jewish cemeteries. In May 2017, the Venice Biennale annual art festival opened, featuring an installation about Mr. Izzo by the Israeli artist Hadassah Goldvicht. Ms. Goldvicht filmed conversations with Mr. Izzo over four years, and has assembled them, along with photographs, as a meditation on Jewish community and dedication. “For me,” Ms. Goldvicht explains in a New York Times article, “the project is not what’s on the wall, but all these conversations…. His wife died last year, he’s living alone on the Lido and losing his eyesight, and he’s still going to the cemetery. Aldo is burying the community.”

The Nazi & the JewDoctor by Rabbi Dr. David Fox

H

e was not an imposing man, short, tidily groomed. I did not sense anything intimidating about him as he faced me in the office. But his eyes were striking – cold, metallic grey, locked upon mine with an unwavering gaze as he spit out his reason for making the appointment. His wife had become paralyzed following an accident and could not speak, move or respond to anyone. She lay in bed, staring. No communication, no relationship. His reason for seeing me? “Because all of my friends say I should just dump her and move on, but in my heart I needed to ask a… Jew-doctor.” He said it casually without a smirk or taunt. He went on. “I might as well tell you that you may have a hard time working with me. I am a member of the American Nazi Party. I have also been a Klansman.” This was said without a sinister air, with no sense of menace. He wanted me to know from the start that I might I feel uneasy

30

working with someone who, well, considered me a “Jew-doctor.” I was prepared to offer him respectful support. But, within my mind, I was eager to learn why his heart had prompted him to seek out a Jewish psychologist. “I want you to know doctor that I detest the Jews as a group, just like I oppose all other aliens who don’t belong in our country. But that’s not to say that I don’t recognize that some of you people are good at what you do. You make good accountants. You are great lawyers, doctors too. What I want from you is to tell me what you people would do if you were in my shoes.” I still did not get it. This man was a racist, detested “my people”, but chose me to find out what a Jew would do if faced with his predicament. How could I possibly prescribe to him “the Jewish solution” if this man would have been content with “the Final Solution”? How would it matter to him if a solitary (Jewish) opinion might conflict with the recommendation of his bigoted peers

who advised him to leave his non-functioning wife? Was this a matter of him needing to appease his soul, doing due diligence by seeking a second opinion from me, or was this a matter of conscience, if indeed he had one? He had already shared with me some of the criminal activities which he had been part of in his vigilante escapades. Was he having pangs of guilt, but only about deserting his wife of many years? Was it love that kept him bound to her, or was there some deeper dynamic banging at the basement door of his mind? As the weeks went by, he began to loosen up. He had begun to trust me enough to share his emotional torment, in small pieces. The cold stare was still very present, but so were the occasional tear drops which dampened those steely eyes. His marriage was once good. She was

What drove this tortured soul to seek out a Jewish psychologist? a stable kind woman, seldom questioning him about his political views or pressing for details about his under-the-radar dealings. They had a love, clearly, and he appreciated her. Now she was confined to permanent bed-rest to live out her years, unresponsive forever. Should he stick with her, resigned to eternal loneliness, or respect his needs as a man and “cut his losses” and find another wife? His dilemma was a psychological one that had some moral undertones. One day, he referenced her accident. It was a nonchalant remark, yet the first mention of the catalyst for his psychological struggles. “You see, doc, my wife’s accident may not have been a true accident.” I looked at him, stayed quiet, but with the most sincerely patient visage I could muster. He continued. “We had a little fight that day and she left in a huff. She sped off in the car and was probably careless because she was crying and mad at me.” Guilt can do magnificent things to the mind. It can bring a person to his knees with regret, and it can propel a person into emotional and existential agony. The fights and arguments which

we have with our dear ones, especially when followed by tragedy, can lock us into spasms of remorse and self-blame. Was he staying with her for penance, serving a life sentence with the woman he had fought with, which had led her to this living death? The man went on, divulging a blend of woeful pain over what had become of his wife, but with sparks of anger at her. I gently pushed him to look at the sadness along with that hostility. He seemed to be hurting, yet was also resentful of his wife. We are all at time saddened by another’s hardships, yet vaguely aware that their predicament makes our own lives difficult. It is a hard tug of war between staying compassionate while also feeling anger when our own happiness is compromised by their inability to care for us. “It was that last talk we had, before she took off in the car. “ This time, the moist eyes had turned to sobbing, tears lining his taught cheeks. The angry grimace still grasped his face, but he was crying. “She told me… that she had been hiding something from me for 30 years.

My wife… came from a Jew mother.” He wept openly now, sad, bitter and yet there was something else going on. “That was the worst shame anyone could cause me. And I told her that. Then she ran out to her car.” “When I heard she was in that car crash, part of me was sorrowful, but part of me felt she had it coming. She had lied to me all along. How did I ever get stuck with a Jew for a wife? Such shame she caused me. I hoped she would die then and there, but she didn’t.” He breathed in deeply, seeming to loosen up and melt into the chair. Then he looked at me with pleading eyes, as if begging to share a conspiratorial wish. In a soft whisper, he said, “So since my wife survived, she deserves for me to do what a Jew would do for a Jew. And that’s why I knew that I needed to get me a Jew-doctor. Can you help me, now, doc? Please can you help me?” Sometimes, the twists and turns of a tortured conscience lead to the gateways of the soul. School is out and the summer season has officially started. That means long leisurely fun-filled days that usually end in a delicious BBQ suppers. The Ultimate BBQ Steak A lucky girl am I married to the king of all BBQs. Dov can make a mean steak; he’s methodical about choosing the right cut, marinating them and cooking them to perfect medium-rare temperature. Dov will make a BBQ warm weather or in a blizzard; nothing can come between a man and his steak. Our once-a-week home BBQ has taught me a great deal about meat and its complexities. For the Marinade: 2 steaks, rinsed & patted dry 3 Tbsp. steak seasoning mix (mesquite flavoring) Kosher salt & black pepper ½ cup teriyaki sauce 2 Tbsp. honey 1 tsp. ginger ½ cup hickory BBQ sauce (your favorite brand) For the Glaze: ½ cup teriyaki sauce 2 Tbsp. honey 1 tsp. ginger ½ cup hickory BBQ sauce 2 tsp. spicy Dijon mustard (optional) Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Or place on grill that has been already preheated and is very hot and has been coated lightly with cooking spray. (If gas grill keep it on med heat) Take a fork and punch small holes into the meat of your steak. Combine the steak seasoning with the Kosher salt and pepper and rub into the top and bottom of your steak. In a small bowl combine all the remaining marinade ingredients, mix well. Put the steaks into a Ziploc bag and then pour in your marinade. Refrigerate for up to 4 hours or at least 30 minutes before grilling. Heat your grill. Remove steaks from marinade and wipe off excess with paper towels. Grill off both sides of your steak for about 2 minutes each side. While the steaks are grilling combine your glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Remove steaks from grill and place into aluminum pan. Brush both side of steaks with your glaze using a pastry brush and finish cooking in the oven until your steaks reach 130 degrees for medium rare, (about 8-10 minutes).

Mustard BBQ Chicken Wings Late one night when in my eighth month of pregnancy, my husband and I saw apiece about an all night restaurant that serves chicken wings and waffles. I can’t even describe the cravings that report elicited, so much so, that I made my poor husband go out and beg our local chicken take out place to stay open 10 minutes longer to satisfy my hunger. I have since had my daughter, but still have cravings for these chicken wings. 12-16 chicken wings, rinsed and patted dry ¼ cup orange juice ¼ cup honey ¼ cup spicy Dijon mustard ¼ cup hickory BBQ sauce (favorite brand) For the Mustard Glaze: ¾ cup mayonnaise ¼ cup sweet teriyaki sauce 3 Tbsp. spicy Dijon mustard 1 tsp. ground ginger powder 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. soy sauce Extra ginger powder for sprinkling Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Or keep on the med-high side of your grill and cover with hood for 6-8 minutes on each side. Place the chicken wings in a heavy duty Ziploc bag. Mix all the remaining ingredients in a small bowl blending well. Pour mixture into Ziploc bag and gently shake, coating all wings as best as you can. Place into refrigerator and let marinate for at least 30 minutes or ideally up to 4 hours or more. In another small bowl, mix together all the glaze ingredients, combining well. Set aside. Drain and remove wings from marinade and pat dry with paper towel. Place the wings in a large baking tray. Sprinkle with ginger powder over the top of the wings, then using a pastry brush coat each wing thoroughly with the glaze mixture that you made. Place into oven and bake about 20-25 minutes. Remove and pile up onto a plate and dig in.

Turkey Burgers by Elizabeth Kurtz

The secrets to making great turkey burgers that are nutritious and delicious.

People shy away from turkey burgers because they fear that they lack flavor. Turkey burgers are nutritious and delicious if you make them right. There are a few secrets to making great turkey burgers. First, use both white and dark meat turkey. Turkey meat is a little like a plain canvas that you need to add some color to. Next, flavor it well. Here are two recipes and lots of tips for fantastic turkey burgers that will never make you miss the beef burger. Don’t forget to serve it with my Creamy Asian Coleslaw. It’s a perfect salad to accompany any burger.

Turkey BurgersMakes 4 – 6 burgers This recipe uses mustard and mesquite spice (or bbq seasoning) to jazz it up. I love the smoky mesquite flavor but make sure you choose one that is naturally seasoned. The artificial smoke flavor is too intense and tastes unnatural. 1 pound (total) ground white and dark meat turkey combined 1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard 1 egg 2 tablespoons ketchup 1 tablespoon barbeque sauce 1 – ½ tablespoons mesquite seasoning ½ tablespoon onion powder 1 tablespoon water (* Here is another crucial tip. Water is an important ingredient in making any burger. It helps keep the burgers moist) ½ cup bread crumbs In a large bowl, mix turkey meat, mustard, egg, ketchup, bbq sauce, mesquite seasoning, onion powder, water and

bread crumbs. Mix it gently (* Using your hands works best, they mix well without working the meat too hard) until all the ingredients are fully combined. Divide the meat into about 5 -6 equal parts, about ¾ cup each. Form into a patty. ( * Here is a great burger trick that I learned from the bbq mavens, make the patty thicker on the outside and leave a small indentation on the inside of the patty. Now, when you bbq or cook your burgers the center part rises evening out your burger. No more bloated tops). Heat a grill pan or a bbq over medium heat( * Don’t worry if you don’t have one just use a regular sauté pan). Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Cook about 3-4 minutes each side until cooked through. ( PLEASE PLEASE do not press down on the burger while it is cooking. When you press down on meat, all the flavors ooze out of the burger and remain in the pan. We want the flavor to stay in the burger. ). And last, layer on the flavor. Add cooked onions or mushrooms, or great roasted tomatoes, spicy mayonnaise or my favorite is Creamy Asian Coleslaw. That recipe is below too .

Italian Turkey Burgers Makes 6 burgers 2 pounds ground turkey, a combination of white and dark meat 1/4 red onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon kosher or sea salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 tablespoon plus 1½ teaspoons chopped fresh basil 1 tablespoon plus 1½ teaspoons chopped fresh oregano 1 egg 1/3 cup tomato-basil pasta sauce 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 cup drained and chopped sun-dried tomatoes 3/4 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs In a large bowl, mix the ground turkey with red onion, garlic, salt, pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, basil and oregano. In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Beat in the pasta sauce and olive oil. Pour the sauce mixture over the seasoned turkey and mix to combine. Mix in the sun-dried tomatoes, and bread crumbs, mixing gently by hand until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. Divide the mixture and form 6 patties. Set them aside to rest briefly. The patties can be assembled up to one day in advance, covered and refrigerated until ready to grill; remove the burgers from the refrigerator 15 minutes prior to cooking to temper slightly. Heat the grill or a sauté pan over medium high heat. Coat the surface with a little spray oil and gently add the patties. Lower the heat to medium and cook the burgers for 4 minutes, careful not to move them until they are ready to turn. Gently and carefully flip the burgers using a spatula. Cook an additional 4 minutes, and check for doneness; a meat thermometer inserted should read 165 degrees. These are terrific with some sautéed mushrooms and olives. Make sure to serve some extra tomato-basil sauce as a topping. REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM AISH.COM
