hy did I open up this sushi restaurant in Boro Park? Because I saw an opportunity to bring top notch chefs and excellent sushi to this amazing community,” The proud owner of Noribar Sushi Lounge beamed with pride as he spoke about his newly established restaurant. Located in the heart of Boro Park on 13th Avenue and 54th Street, Noribar easily stands out from the rest. It is an undeniable truth that sushi restaurants are very popular on the food scene in the Orthodox Jewish community. It is definitely a “thing” now to go out for sushi with friends. Forget about pizza. Forget about getting a salad. No one ever says no to going out for sushi! You see everyone enjoying sushi binges, from seminary girls to lawyers and doctors. However, some Sushi places are a mere convenience with the basic favs and sub-par food suitable for a late night nosh session. Noribar, however, is anything but basic. Noribar provides you with a welcome change from the ordinary. From their stunning, modern decor to their highly trained chefs, Noribar is a place where everyone will want to be seen! The ambiance of the restaurant is one of the first things you notice when you enter this establishment. It lives up to the “Lounge” part of its name with dining areas decorated in deep, satisfying colors that create a very comfortable and intimate atmosphere. Then it only gets better when you meet the staff. When you enter the restaurant you are greeted with wide smiles from waiters eager to get you seated. All the staff there have been trained to put forth their best middot and be fast on their feet. They get your order to the kitchen in a flash, they don’t stand around chatting with their coworkers and playing with their phones while making you wait unnecessarily to be served. They provide customer service the way it should be practiced everywhere, and the way that you deserve to be treated! Then there is the food. The sushi here is oh SO amazing. I have never had such delicious, innovative and visually stunning sushi before in my life. All compliments go to the chefs. Why? Because these are not your ordinary run of the mill sushi chefs. They are highly experienced, well trained chefs who the owner petitioned to get into his restaurant. These chefs have had offers from many restaurants all across the world and of all places, they decided to come to Boro Park to give us a treat of the highest culinary caliber!

A Nazi in the Family by Derek Niemann

Three years ago I discovered that my grandfather was a member of the SS and arrested for crimes against humanity

L

ate last year, I read an interview with a rabbi in my university city of Manchester, in which he said that things were so bad he could not see himself ending his days in Britain. I wanted to cry – how could this be happening in my own country? His words had a special resonance for me – at the time I was finishing a book about my own grandfather – an active perpetrator in the Holocaust.

My German grandfather died before I was born. My father told me that his father, Karl Niemann, was “a bank clerk, a pen-pusher.” He also told me that he was a member of the Nazi party. Out of shame, I kept that from my Jewish friends. Three years ago while my wife prepared for a conference in Berlin a far more terrible revelation came. I decided to join her in the German capital for a short vacation. I asked my dad where he had lived during the

20 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

war. I would look it up, maybe take some photos of the house for him. I checked online for any information about the street itself. While I was searching a page came up bearing the words: SS Hauptsturmführer Karl Niemann… crimes against humanity… use of slave labor. I was to discover that in May 1945 my grandfather was arrested in the Alps by American soldiers and imprisoned in former POW camps

for three years. My family closed that sordid chapter in their lives and never spoke about it again. But as a 50-year-old writer, I had a compulsion to dig into this new-found truth and to write about it. I trawled archives, went to concentration camps, spoke to Holocaust historians and relatives and began to piece together the story – not just of Karl Niemann, but also that of my family, who had been living a life in Berlin that was both bizarre and frighteningly ordinary. My dad had vivid recollections of a childhood in which he saw much but understood little. During the war, his father was always going on ‘business trips’. No sooner was he back than he was preparing to go off again. The reality was that he was an overseer of slave labor and the factories he was visiting were the likes of Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen. SS officers requisitioned inmates to do odd jobs around the

house. My dad remembered men wearing “dirty grey striped uniforms, with ‘Jude’ written on the back”. They brought furniture, mended clothes, made bunk beds and an air raid shelter in the garden. His mother gave them coffee and cake. They told her they liked coming to her house. The children played in bomb craters: it was a million miles from the murderous regime in which their father was a working participant. Karl pictured in his Nazi Party uniform with wife Minna, 1933.Karl pictured in his Nazi Party uniform with wife Minna, 1933. Just how much did my grandfather know of the Holocaust and what was his involvement? In the last weeks of the war, he was one of four officers ordered to relocate with their families from Berlin to the Alps. The entourage stopped for two or three nights at Dachau on the way and my dad recalled overhearing a heated conversation between his parents

as they looked out over a low building with a tall smoking chimney. His mother said: “You know what they’re doing there? They’re killing the Jews and burning their bodies.” His father was emphatic: “No, they wouldn’t do that,” he insisted. There is simply too much contrary evidence for his denial to be credible. At his tribunal in 1948, the prosecution lacked incriminating papers that were being used at the time to help hang Karl’s boss, Oswald Pohl, the overall controller of concentration camps. Auditor Karl Niemann had produced accounts for the year 1942, in which he bemoaned the ‘loss’ of 8,000 workers from Majdanek. Eight thousand Jews had been taken out and shot – and Karl had written down the exact date of their killing. He claimed he had never been to Auschwitz – yet it was the SS’s second biggest ‘factory’ and a Holocaust historian told me that it was inconceivable that he would never have visited it. And how could he have gone to camp after camp, and not seen all the signs of torture, the skeletal figures, breathed the smell of death? My grandfather found inmates to testify on his behalf that he had not physically abused anyone. What of the passive acceptance that allowed him to work for the SS for 10 years? Most disturbing of all were the comments from the presiding judge

My grandfather oversaw slave labor and the factories he visited were the likes of Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen. that Karl Niemann, presented with the facts, showed no sign of contrition for his part in the enslavement and brutal treatment of innocent people. It was hard to be objective. There were times when I hated my grandfather. There was a brief window – when I discovered that he had been working deals with the Gestapo to have inmates released – that I thought he might have been another Oskar Schindler. But in the end, I accept he was a flawed individual and look elsewhere for positives. And there are positives to come out of this dreadful story. There is my family’s reaction to the book’s publication, most notably my uncle, still living in Germany, who read a draft and told me: “I find this hard, but it is true, and you must tell it all.” A guiding light has been one Bernhard Gelderblom, whose own father died an unrepentant perpetrator. Bernhard has dedicated his retirement to teaching children in

22 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

local towns and villages about the lives of Jewish communities before the Nazis came. He inspired people in these places to restore Jewish cemeteries smashed during Kristallnacht. Throughout this process, I have been shaken, not by hostility, but by kindness. It seems that those closest to the Holocaust are girdled with compassion. Archivists have looked into my heart and said in soft voices: “It’s not your fault.” A lady who had lost family at Auschwitz even said: “Your grandfather probably couldn’t help it.” Kind words indeed, but for the sake of truth, I must value honesty above everything. As Holocaust survivors pass away, I understand that I and others in my position have a role. As the grandson of a Nazi criminal, I can say to young people, this is what has happened, but I do not share my grandfather’s beliefs, I do not agree with what he has done. In the weeks since my book was published, I have found others who have been given a similar legacy to me and also want to carry a torch against hatred and bigotry. I was deeply moved to be asked by Aish.com to write this article. The fact that it is possible speaks volumes for the willingness of good people, regardless of faith, to find understanding and common humanity.

The Art of Saying Hello A simple way to change your life and the life of others. Seriously. by Rabbi Efrem Goldberg

A

couple of weeks ago marked the 20th yahrzeit of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt”l. His brilliance was undeniable, and yet it was perhaps surpassed only by his humility and sensitivity to all. Rabbi Chanoch Teller recounts the following anecdote: “When Rav Shlomo Zalman passed away, a beggar in Sha’arei Chesed sobbed in her anguish: “Now who will say ‘good morning’ to me every day?” While a testament to his unpretentiousness and accessibility, the anecdote has the potential to leave the reader believing that one must be the greatest rabbi of the generation to be friendly, caring and gracious to all. Indeed, Rav Shlomo Zalman’s greatness was seeing his warmth and

friendliness as nothing extraordinary at all, but something that should come naturally and be instinctive. This week, I had the privilege of attending a retirement party of an executive who was stepping down after 20 years of dedicated service to his company. In his typical humility, when he invited me he portrayed the gathering as being something like a small cake in the conference room for a few minutes to mark his retirement. In reality, however, over 600 people packed into the company cafeteria, most of them standing for what turned into two and a half hours of tributes offered by those who reported to him and with whom he worked closely. One by one the presenters noted the individual’s business acumen, talents, skills and gifts. They talked

32 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

about his attention to detail on documents, his negotiating prowess and his invaluable contributions to the growth and success of the company. Every single one of them, however, also noted that what made him truly special and beloved was not his mind, but his generous heart and soul that he brought to work each day. They described him as a man of high moral character. Speakers were literally chocked up as they recounted his warmth, wise counsel, sagacious guidance, and most of all, his genuine care and concern for their personal lives. When the event concluded, I asked him, “You only thought a handful of people were going to attend, those you worked closest with for the last two

Whenyouwalkbysomeonewithoutoffering a greeting you make him or her feel invisible and insignificant. decades. Why do you think over 600 people decided to attend?” He answered, “When I began my career many decades ago I made a conscious decision that I would smile and greet every single person I would encounter throughout my day at work, whether in the lobby, elevator, hallway, in line at the cafeteria or outside in the parking lot. I made it a goal to learn everyone’s name and made it a point to use his or her name whenever I said hello. I guess people appreciated it and maybe that’s why they showed up today.” The Mishna encourages us all, “Be the first to greet each person” (Ethics of the Fathers, 4:20). The Maharal explains that when you walk by someone without offering a greeting you make him or her feel invisible and insignificant. By making a point of greeting someone you demonstrate that you don’t see yourself as superior or better than another. Rather, by instigating the greeting, you show that you respect that person as an individual and thereby you give them dignity and worth.

In his book, Reflections of the Maggid, Rabbi Paysach Krohn tells the following story: In Argentina there was a ritual slaughter complex, comprised of several buildings. There was a building where the animals were fed, a building where they were slaughtered and the meat packed and loaded onto trucks, and an office building with dressing rooms for the shochtim (ritual slaughterers). The entire area

was surrounded by a tall chain link fence and everyone entered through a wrought iron gate in the front, near the parking lot. The owner, Yisrael (Izzy) Nachmal, was a workaholic. He was the first one in every morning and the last one out every evening. He oversaw every aspect of his company, Ultimate Meats, and made it a point to know every worker. The guard at the front gate, Domingo, knew that when Izzy left in the evening, he could lock the gate and go home. One evening as Izzy was leaving, he called out to the guard, “Good night, Domingo, you can lock up and go.” “No,” Domingo called back, “not everyone has left yet.” “What are you talking about,” Izzy said, “everyone left two hours ago!” “It is not so,” Domingo said, “One of the shochtim, Rabbi Berkowitz, hasn’t left yet.” “But he goes home every day with the other shochtim, maybe you just didn’t see him,” Izzy said. “Believe me, I am positive he didn’t leave yet,” the guard insisted. “We better go look for him.” Izzy knew that Domingo was reliable and conscientious. He decided not to argue, but instead got out of his car and rushed back to the office building with Domingo. They searched the dressing room thinking that perhaps Rabbi Berkowitz had fainted and was debilitated. He wasn’t there. They ran to where the animals were slaughtered, but he wasn’t there either. They searched the truck dock, the packing house, going from room to room. Finally they came to the huge walk-in refrigeration room where the large slabs of meat were kept frozen.

An Amazing True Story about the Power of a Smile

MAGAZINE

They opened the door and to their shock and horror they saw Rabbi Berkowitz rolling on the floor, trying desperately to keep himself warm. They ran over to him, lifted him off the floor and helped him out of the refrigerated room, past the thick heavy wooden door that had locked behind him. They wrapped blankets around him and made sure he was warm and comfortable. Izzy Nachmal was incredulous. “Domingo,” he asked, “how did you know Rabbi Berkowitz hadn’t left? There are over two hundred workers here every day. Don’t tell me you know the comings and goings of every one of them?” The guard’s answer is worth remembering. “Every morning when that rabbi comes in, he greets me and says hello. He makes me feel like a person. And every single night when he leaves he tells me, ‘Have a pleasant evening.’ He never misses a night – and to tell you the truth, I wait for his kind words. Dozens and dozens of workers pass me every day – morning and night, and they don’t say a word to me. To them I am a nothing. To him, I am a somebody. “I knew he came in this morning and I was sure he hadn’t left yet, because I was waiting for his friendly good-bye for the evening!” We may not have encyclopedic Torah knowledge or a brilliant business mind, but every one of us can be extraordinary just by making a point of greeting everyone with a smile. Whether at work, the gym, the supermarket or walking to shul, we should never retire from being friendly, courteous and attempting to provide dignity and worth to all.

Following key events in the life of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen is to follow the course of Jewish history in the last century >> From Russian pogrom. to the British Mandate; from Nazi Germany to the War of Independence >> Meinertzhagen saw it all and played his heroic part, till his last day hot summer sun beats down relentlessly on the cobbled streets of Yerushalayim, but today, instead of seeking respite from the midday heat, hundreds, if not thousands, throng through narrow alleyways, to accompany a man who became their guest, and then their friend – only to pay the ultimate price for his friendship. The year is 1924, and the levayah

is that of Yaakov Yisrael de Haan, just yesterday the faithful assistant of the gaon and tzaddik Harav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld. Yesterday he was a brave warrior for the Old Yishuv – today, they mourn him. Through the streets they march slowly, a striking procession of silver-bearded elders, dressed in the traditional blue-white striped kaftans, led by the Mara d’Ara Yisrael himself. Harav Sonnenfeld’s usually radiant countenance is marred with sorrow, but his proud bearing and the fierce determination in his eyes bear testimony that even the slaying of his most devoted follower will not weaken his resolve. Slaying, you say? Yes – for de Haan was brutally murdered, and not only that, but by one of his own people. How great is the horror that Jews have stooped so low. Even the watching Arabs are shaken at the events that have come to pass. British officers, too, are among the crowd of mourners – they were well acquainted with the spirited de Haan. And the Haganah has also sent a contingent of its men, camouflaged in chareidi dress, spying on their brethren. Back in their headquarters and in secularist offices throughout the land, many are those who congratulate each other on a “job well done” and look forward to a future unencumbered by a man who proved their formidable opponent. A gloomy silence settles upon the pale Jerusalem stone as the Gaavad begins his hesped, detailing the sacrifice of one who abandoned the comfort and culture of western Europe to share the simple life of his Jewish brothers in the Holy Land, and then to fight as a lion for their independence from secularist rule. Suddenly, the sound of heartbroken sobbing interrupts his

speech. Those who turn to discover its source are astonished to see that the cries emanate from a tall, handsome British officer. The soldier is clad in full military uniform, yet he stands among the most prominent of Yerushalayim’s rabbanim as if he belonged there. It is Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen, chief of British intelligence in Palestine and a close friend of de Haan, who now bewails his failed attempt to persuade him to escape the city. De Haan had been made aware of several reports that his assassination was imminent, and just a few days ago, Meinertzhagen had come to him with a proposal. “I’ve arranged a temporary boarding house for you in Safed. It will be difficult for them to harm you there, and we’ll be able to protect you.” Yet de Haan had refused to abandon his Rav and his people, and he’d paid the bitter price. ****************** Richard Meinertzhagen was born in England in 1878. From his early youth, he’d been drawn to nature – to observe, and try to understand. Often he’d escape to the great outdoors

Behind the tomb of Avraham Avinu, he discovered an aperture in the wall where he spent hours with his eyes lifted to the heavens, bird-watching. Over the decades, he hunted many a rare species of bird, to be stuffed and mounted. Shortly before he died, he donated his incredible collection of 20,000 mounted birds to the British Museum. At the age of twenty-one, Meinertzhagen was drafted into the British army, where he served both in India and West Africa. During World War One, he was assigned as a staff officer to locations in Africa, France and the Middle-East. In Palestine, he served as the chief intelligence officer, directing an intelligence network against the Ottoman Turks, then the sovereign nation there. Among his agents and operatives were members of the NILI Jewish underground, whose leader Aharon Aharonson described Meinertzhagen as “a modest and humble man who greatly assisted us in our endeavors.” After the armistice, he attended the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, after which he served as General Edmund Allenby’s chief political officer, as well as a military advisor in the British Foreign Ministry’s Middle-East department. He was heavily involved

in formulating the conditions for the Mandate for Palestine, which was initially designed to achieve a smooth transition to Jewish self-rule alongside some kind of solution for the Arabs then living there. An avid birdwatcher, Meinertzhagen enjoyed combining intelligence operations with ornithology, which simultaneously provided him with the perfect cover for many of his perilous operations. He frequently carried out risky espionage missions on the southern Turkish border under the guise of tracking the flight patterns and habits of golden vultures. His research also led him to discover several rare species of birds, which were eventually named after him.

A Vow in Odessa

Meinertzhagen certainly experienced far more than the average share of excitement, adventure, blood and guts. Yet the turning point in his life occurred not during wartime, and led not to a nationalist sentiment for his own country of birth, but rather to a fierce devotion to a people not his own. The year was 1910, and

Meinertzhagen was visiting the city of Odessa, Ukraine. Against his will, he found himself witnessing firsthand a brutal pogrom that the Russians unleashed against the defenseless Jews of the city. In his diary, Meinertzhagen recorded, “I was sickened beyond imagination. Never before was I so furious, and yet so powerless to help. Never had I conceived that human beings could be more violent than the predatory beasts of the wild, until I witnessed the pogrom that occurred in the streets of Odessa. “I was dining pleasurably together with Consul Smith when we detected the first sounds of the pogrom. had cost the British army the lives of 8,000 soldiers. The hapless Murray was dismissed from his post and replaced by General Allenby, who was also initially unsuccessful in his goal of breaching and vanquishing the fortified cities. It was Colonel Meinertzhagen who proposed what later became known as the Haversack Ruse. He suggested that the British deceive the Ottoman military into believing that the surprise attack would commence in Gaza as opposed to Beer Sheva. The misinformation would doubtless impel the Turks to concentrate their manpower in Gaza, leaving Beer Sheva virtually unprotected and allowing the British an easy defeat. Meinertzhagen, among the most creative and ingenious officers in the British Empire, set out on horseback to launch his mission, riding along the Turkish border in close proximity to Beer Sheva. When Ottoman border police identified him, they immediately opened fire on the wouldbe infiltrator. After several rounds of fire, Meinertzhagen reared his horse and fled. The Turks who arrived at the site shortly afterward discovered a collection of the rider’s belongings which included a rifle, binoculars,

map, and haversack. What most drew their attention, however, was the water bottle that Meinertzhagen had purposely abandoned at the scene. The patrolmen were well-aware that a man must be in dire straits to have dropped his water bottle in the heat of the desert; they therefore surmised that the rider had been mortally wounded in the attack. Rifling through the haversack, the Turkish soldiers discovered a wad of bills, personal letters and documents, and an official letter sent from a high-ranking British officer notifying that the planned attack on Beer Sheva had been canceled. A second letter confirmed this, adding that an alternative attack in Gaza would shortly be underway, spearheaded by the British Navy which would launch its offensive in northern Gaza. Further documents attested to the impending British assault on Gaza, based on the premise that eastern Beer Sheva was too heavily fortified. The patrolmen immediately dispatched this valuable information to their superiors, who without delay, began redirecting their forces to Gaza. With the exception of General Allenby and three of the British top brass, no one was apprised of the ruse.

In fact, immediately upon returning to base, Meinertzhagen reported to the Desert Riders’ Brigade, where he delivered an official report of his missing haversack and requested that the army dispatch a patrol to retrieve the lost items. “When I returned to headquarters,” Meinertzhagen related gleefully, “I reported to Allenby, who divulged that he had just received a furious dispatch from the Desert Riders’ Brigade ordering him to stop sending young, inexperienced officers on these missions, as I had just caused inestimable and possibly irreparable damage through my negligence and imprudence.” One of Allenby’s division commanders likewise sent a livid telegram to his superior, demanding that the officer who had so negligently lost his haversack with the priceless documents be punished accordingly. This telegram was intercepted by the Turks and reinforced their conviction that Beer Sheva would not be attacked. Indeed, the Ottomans swallowed the bait completely, redirecting their forces to Gaza and significantly decreasing their presence in the eastern side of the land. On October 31, 1917, Allenby’s men took the Turks completely by surprise in their assault on Beer Sheva, conquering the city effortlessly before proceeding to Gaza which fell shortly afterward. Meinertzhagen had further plans up his sleeve. Soliciting information from Turkish POWs, he learned that cigarettes were a rare and valuable commodity among Ottoman soldiers. Beginning in August, British planes began flying close to the Turkish border around sunset, dropping packs of cigarettes along with propaganda leaflets. The soldiers ignored the propaganda, but were soon addicted to the cigarettes that fell daily from the British planes. As soon as the planes disappeared into the horizon, Ottoman soldiers would emerge from their bunkers to collect the fallen packs of cigarettes. The continued until November 5th, when the cigarettes packs contained

more than just a dose of nicotine; they were laced with a powerful sleeping powder that left the border patrolmen in Gaza lost in blissful never-never land that continued well into November 6th. It should be noted that General Allenby actually prohibited this course of action, which violated laws of honorable warfare, but the impulsive colonel preferred to break the rules rather than risk the lives of “his boys.” Indeed, Meinertzhagen never did reveal his secret tactic to his superior, who wrote in his report of the final battle to conquer Gaza, “The enemy soldiers fought us as if their senses were strangely dulled.” It wasn’t until many years later, when Meinertzhagen visited an

Change Come Over Him”

After Britain’s conquest of Palestine, Meinertzhagen was promoted to the head of intelligence operations in the region. Throughout his tenure, he formed close relationships with many of the key players in the drama playing out in the controversial land. His respect for Jews, specifically the Ultra-Orthodox, was manifest. He was particularly captivated by the venerable sage, Harav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld ztz”l, and paid frequent visits to the Rav’s shul. He documented his first visit in his diary: “I was deeply impressed by the simplicity and earnestness of the prayers. It is no wonder that

liked the man, although I do not deny that my attempt to prevent his death was partially motivated by my fear that [his death] would cause rioting in the land and terrible troubles for our boys [the British soldiers]…” Meinertzhagen, a history buff and lover of antiquities, enjoyed touring the ancient land and was fascinated by the richness of Jewish history. Shortly after Allenby’s forces assumed control of Palestine from the Turks, Meinertzhagen made his way to Me’aras Hamachpeilah in Chevron and accessed the building atop the cave. Nobody was there at the time, and he was free to explore wherever he pleased. He later described that behind

Meinertzhagen refused the cigarette, citing doctor’s orders, and the retired general chuckled in reply, “Don’t worry. This one isn’t laced with narcotics.” General Allenby frequently expressed his admiration of the colonel’s resourcefulness and innovation, and commended his contributions to his vast successes in the Middle East. In his summary of activities in 1917, he wrote of Meinertzhagen, “The colonel is largely responsible for my successes in Palestine.”

the tomb of Avraham Avinu, he discovered an aperture in the wall behind a marble slab that had obviously been moved, and a door, approximately four feet in height, which was open. Beyond the opening he was able to make out a narrow passageway, approximately six meters wide, that descended at a forty-five degree angle to a subterranean chamber. Unfortunately, Meinertzhagen, who was occupied with his military duties, did not have time to inspect his findings further. However, he did reveal them in passing to several archaeologist acquaintances who documented Meinertzhagen’s testimony in their own writings. Years later, others attempted to find

prosperity, and that Germany’s armed forces had yet to recover from the debacle of the First World War. When Meinertzhagen raised the issue of Jewish persecution, Hitler attempted to justify his actions, explaining that in Germany, Jews virtually controlled the economy as well as political life, and that in effect, a small minority was controlling the fate of seventy million German citizens. “There is no outright persecution,” Hitler emphasized. “We are merely striving to diminish their strength and prevent them

Unlike in the past, the dictator did not protest his innocence, neither did he attempt to rationalize his actions. The mere mention of the Jews caused, as Meinertzhagen wrote, his face to became a mask of “cruelty and hatred; his voice became a vicious shout; even his hair stood on end. His fists beat angrily on his desk, and his eyes spewed hatred… I realized that there was no point in our continuing the discussion…” Meinertzhagen concludes this chapter in his diary with the words, “I admit that if I were a Jew, I would desire to annihilate every last German…” Later that same day, Meinertzhagen met with a Jewish activist in Berlin

the entrance to this hidden room, yet were never able to locate it. However, other apertures later discovered, as well as the formation of the cave floor, seem to confirm that Meinertzhagen had not erred in his descriptions. In 1934, Meinertzhagen was dispatched by the British government to Germany in order to attempt to open negotiations with Hitler y”sh. At the time, Hitler was still proclaiming his desire for world peace, even as he clandestinely built up a huge army and primed his citizens for war. Meinertzhagen related that Hitler bemoaned the slanderous media campaigns against him in England and other European countries, complaining specifically of false reporting regarding the discrimination against the Jews of Germany as well as his attempts to ignite war in Europe. He protested that his Nazi party espoused peaceful coexistence and

from unjustly controlling the country. British media sources blow rare incidents of unruliness out of all proportion – they are simply minor events perpetrated by hotheads and do not reflect the true picture of life here.” A year later, in 1935, Meinertzhagen again met with Hitler; the British government was still anxious to preserve cordial ties with Germany. “I had a brief conversation with Hitler,” Meinertzhagen wrote, “and he spoke amicably about fostering closer ties between England and Germany, as well as with France, which was then rebutting his diplomatic overtures. Then, I attempted to raise the issue of persecution of the Jews, and I witnessed a horrific change come over him, as if from one moment to the next he’d descended from a state of reason into utter insanity.”

who requested his assistance in eliminating Hitler. The agent revealed that the Jewish resistance was plotting to assassinate several highranking Nazi officers in Munich, whose funerals would doubtless be attended by Hitler and his inner circle. The resistance planned to hide a powerful bomb in one of the caskets, which would effectively eliminate the top brass of the Nazi party in one fell swoop. The activist requested that the British government relay the bomb to them via the British Embassy in Berlin. “I communicated the message to my superiors in the Foreign Ministry in London, but they responded with a definite and furious, ‘No!’ …They feared jeopardizing relations with Germany…”

Meinertzhagen did not merely

advocate protection of the Jewish people in exile; he also supported a more proactive stance, namely, the restoration of Jewish sovereignty over the Promised Land. He once related an old legend that dated back to the time just after the Napoleonic Wars, told to him by his mother: An old Jewish grandmother so much desired to return to her ancient homeland that she assembled a group of local Jews, purchased a white donkey, and set out upon a perilous journey across land and sea, determined to reach her goal. To her distress, this feisty old lady only managed to get as far as Calais, France, before her escorts deserted her, and her husband was then forced to cross the Channel and bring her home (along with the donkey). The colonel went so far as to rebuke Jews who estranged themselves from the Holy Land. “I once lunched with the wife of Baron Leopold Rothschild,” he wrote, “and she scoffed at the Jewish aspiration to return to their homeland. ‘England is my homeland,’ this rich Jewess declared.” An incensed Meinertzhagen scornfully replied, “You worshippers of the Golden Calf fear losing your wealth in the event that a sovereign Jewish nation arises in the Holy Land.” On April 23, 1948, seventy-year-old Richard Meinertzhagen was standing on deck of a British naval warship docked in the port of Haifa, overseeing the evacuation of British soldiers from Israel. At that very hour, bloody, decisive battles were raging between the Jews and Arabs of Haifa, and Meinertzhagen heard a British officer calling for a brigade of soldiers from the ship to come and guard supplies remaining in the port. Unable to simply stand and watch, Meinertzhagen managed to obtain a uniform, a rifle, and 200 bullets from a sympathetic soldier, and he then disembarked, joining the Haganah soldiers in their battle against the Arab enemy. Meinertzhagen himself wounded and killed several Arab fighters. Haganah soldiers were unaware of the identity of the mysterious old man who had spontaneously joined the fighting, yet his brilliant combat skills and tactics showed that this was a warrior to be reckoned with. After his ammunition ran out, Meinertzhagen was spotted by a British soldier and returned to ship where he was castigated by one of the officers: “An old man like you shouldn’t be playing with fire!” “Back on board,” relates Meinertzhagen, “I returned the uniform to my friend, scrubbed the rifle clean, and then ordered a large bottle of champagne, which we shared in his cabin. All things considered, it was a great day!” Throughout the remainder of his life, Richard Meinertzhagen followed the rapid developments in the burgeoning state and defended its Jews from criticism at every possible opportunity. The retired colonel lived not only to see the growth and flourishing of the state, but also its stunning victory and expansion following the Six Day War. Just ten days after its conclusion, on June 17, 1967, the curtain closed upon the colorful life of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen, a man whose days had been filled with adventure, innovation, and devotion to the future of the Jewish people.

Internal Spring Cleaning W Cleaning our digestive system after all its hard work during Passover GITTA BIXENSPANNER

ith Passover behind us, after we have thoroughly cleaned our homes inside and out, it is time for an internal cleansing. It is very beneficial to rid ourselves of all the excesses of the Yom Tov diet, which consisted of matzah, unrestrained amounts of potatoes, eggs, sugar, fried and fatty foods, and meat at every meal. It is imperative that we give our system a bit of a rest of all the hard work it was subjected to over the holidays. Most people complained of the weight gain along with other symptoms like bloating and constipation.

Where does one begin?

Any cleansing program should begin in the colon, the last portion of the digestive system. The Rambam (Maimonides), who lived about 1000 years ago and was one of the greatest doctors in ancient times,

advocated taking care of our colon as a first step to health and vitality. Our widespread colon problems begin with our unhealthy Western diet that is deficient in plant fibers. Fiber is indispensable in maintaining a healthy colon. A person with a healthy colon should be able to have minimally one bowel movement per day, if not two or three. With the help of fiber, elimination should be complete, fast and easy.

Why do a colon cleanse?

The colon’s job is to compact the chime, absorb water, and receive B-vitamins produced by healthy intestinal bacteria. One of the most renowned nutrition experts in the world, Dr. Bernard Jensen, D.C., Ph.D., author of many popular health books, states: “In the 50 years I’ve spent helping people to overcome illness, disability and disease, it has become crystal clear that poor bowel management lies at the root of most people’s health problems. In treating over 300,000 patients, it is the bowel that invariably

has to be cared for first before any effective healing can take place.” (Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management,) Our colon functions like a sewer system in a large city. Just imagine for a second what would happen if your local sewers became clogged by some debris. Within a short time the whole neighborhood would be filled with filth and an unbearable stench. This same process occurs in our bodies when the elimination system is not functioning properly. When the colon is clean and healthy, our excrement should not have an unpleasant odor and we experience an overall wellbeing. When it is congested with stagnant waste, poisons back up into the system and pollute the inner environment.

What would be a good first step?

Dietary fiber plays a crucial role in the proper function and maintenance of the colon. “Increasing the amount of fiber in the diet may reduce symptoms of constipation, diarrhea among other

intestinal ailments such as fogginess, chronic fatigue and other symptoms, Fiber keeps stool soft and lowers pressure inside the colon so that bowel contents can move through easily. The American Dietetic Association recommends 20 to 35 grams of fiber each day.” (National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse part of the National Institutes of Health)

Suggestions for a high fiber diet

Start your day with a glass of warm water and juice of 1/2 lemon. Breakfast: Eat fruits or a high fiber cereal like All Bran or cooked oatmeal sprinkled with ground flaxseeds. Lunch: Green salad with a generous amount of sprouts and any other vegetable available Snack: Fruits or natural nuts (unsweetened, unsalted) Dinner: Combine one choice of grain (rice, millet, corn, quinoa) with a legume (beans of any kind, chick peas, lentils, split peas red, yellow, green)

Chickpea corn salad This recipe is delicious and very high in fiber 1 cup chickpeas soaked overnight and cooked 1 cup string beans cooked al dente (not very soft) 1 cup raw corn kernels 1 handful baby tomatoes 1 small sliced red onions 1 can sliced hearts of palm Mix all ingredients well

Apple crisp This simple apple crisp is high in fiber and a good dessert anytime but I serve it especially Friday nights. 5-6 apples baking apples, peeled and chopped 2 Tbs lemon Cinnamon to taste 3/4 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup oatmeal 1/2 cup applesauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup chopped walnuts Distribute apples evenly in a lightly greased 8x8 baking pan. Pour maple syrup over the apples and then sprinkle cinnamon over it all, along with lemon juice to avoid apples getting dark. In a bowl, mix together flour and oatmeal. Add the applesauce, nuts, brown sugar, and mix until the flour is just moistened. Spread this mixture onto apples. Bake in the oven at 375 degrees for about 35 minutes. Let it cool a few minutes and serve hot or cold. Preparation time 30 minutes Serves 8
