Kennedy, Thomas Edison, and Winston Churchill, three men who changed the history of the twentieth

century, viewed failure as part of the process of success. In her book, The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed, Jessica Lahey writes about the significance of failure in children’s lives. She explains that early failure and its consequences help children develop a toolbox of skills to gain autonomy and competence for later in life. Paul Tough, in his book How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character, outlines the skills and character traits children attain by encountering and overcoming failure. Persistence. Persistence is about
knowing what you want and not stopping until you get it. Remember Watty Piper’s The Little Engine that Could? While the little blue engine is the smallest of all the engines, she is the only one who agrees to help the dolls and toys over the mountain. Though it is unclear whether such a small engine can succeed, the engine repeats to herself, “I think I can. I think I can.” And eventually makes it to the other side of the mountain. It is just this persistence or perseverance that we need to teach our children. When struggling, we need to push ourselves in order to reach our goal. Like all non – cognitive skills, persistence

cannot be taught through a worksheet. As parents, we can be role models for our children and teach them that when things are tough, they still need to keep trying. Setting our own goals (whether they are fitness, educational, or personal goals) and then sharing our triumphs and failures with our children will teach them that it is okay to fail and then keep on working towards a goal. Parents and educators need to model persistence and encourage second, third, and twentieth tries.

Self control. A famous study in the 1960s, often dubbed the “marshmallow test” tested children on their self – control. The very young children were handed a marshmallow and told that they could get a second one if they waited until the researcher came back in the room in order to eat the first. Some children ate the first right away and did not receive a second, but others sang or talked to themselves in order to avoid eating the marshmallow. Eventually, when the researcher returned, those children received a second marshmallow. The researchers then followed those children for the next several decades. What the researchers found astounded them. Those children who had managed to control themselves in order to get the second marshmallow had more successful marriages, careers, and lives in general. The ability to control themselves and delay gratification ended up allowing them to set goals and achieve them even if it meant waiting a bit along the way. Helping children set goals and then working with them to achieve them is an excellent way to develop self – control. Curiosity. Curiosity is about asking questions and wanting to know how the world works. The truth is that you cannot “teach” curiosity. You can, however, model curiosity when your children are little – asking your own questions and working with him to look them up. You can also answer his questions, regardless of how silly or frequent they are. These questions will get longer and more important and as time goes on he will develop skills to answer them himself.

Tell Me Who Are the Jews Or Die by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller
An American sergeant in WWII risks his life ordering 1000 POWs to say they are all Jews.
A
merican Jewish servicemen fighting Nazi troops during World War II faced even greater dangers than their nonJewish comrades. If they fell into enemy hands, Germany didn’t treat them as ordinary POWs with the attendant rights demanded by the Geneva Conventions. Instead, Jewish prisoners were handled the way Germans handled all Jews: they were dispatched to death or slave labor camps, with little chance of survival. The American Army even advised its Jewish troops to destroy their dog tags and other identifying documents if captured by Nazi forces. The group of over a thousand American soldiers were captured in late 1944 and early 1945 in the Battle of the Bulge and transported to the Stalag IXA POW camp near Ziegenhain, Germany. One of their first orders was to separate out the Jewish troops and present them to their German captors. The German camp commander, Major Siegmann, delivered the order in English to the ranking American serviceman in the camp. This was Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, a stocky 24-year-old

from Knoxville Tennessee. Remembered by his fellow troops from basic training as a gentle, unassuming soldier, Sgt. Edmonds might have seemed an unlikely candidate for the heroism he was about to display. According to his son, Rev. Chris Edmonds, who has spent years speaking with witnesses and piecing together what happened that day on January 27, 1945, instead of ordering Jewish troops front and center, Sgt. Edmonds turned to his men and said, “We are not doing that, we are all falling out.” Commanding all the Americans in the POW camp to stand at attention in front of their barracks, Sgt. Edmonds placed himself front and center. Lester Tanner, a Jewish soldier who served with Sgt. Edmonds, later recalled the scene: “I would estimate that there were more than 1,000 Americans standing in wide formation in front of the barracks, with Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds standing in front, with several senior noncoms beside him, of which I was one.” Major Siegmann strode up to Sgt. Edmonds. “They cannot all be Jews!” Sgt. Edmonds replied to the
commander, “We are all Jews.” Enraged, Siegmann took out his pistol and threatened to shoot Sgt. Edmonds. Facing immediate death, Edmonds refused to back down and betray the Jews under his command. “According to the Geneva Convention, we only have to give our name, rank and serial number,” Sgt. Edmonds replied, and recited them. “If you shoot me, you will have to shoot all of us and after the war you will be tried for war crimes.” Paul Stern, a Jewish POW who was standing nearby, recalled those stirring words that saved his life. “Although 70 years have passed, I can still hear the words (Sgt. Edmonds) said to the German camp commander.” After a moment, the Commandant turned and walked away. Sgt. Roddie Edmond’s son estimates that his father’s actions saved the lives of over 200 American soldiers in the POW camp. After the war, Roddie Edmonds never mentioned his heroism that day, nor later in the war, when, according to his son, he again told American POWs to resist German orders and not embark

It was only after he died in 1985 at the age of 64 that his children began to slowly uncover their father’s remarkable wartime deeds. When Roddie Edmonds’ daughter decided to make a video about her late father’s life for a college project, her mother showed her diaries he had kept in Stalag IXA. These contained some musings about daily life in the POW camp, but mostly contained the names and addresses of the troops in his care, which Edmonds had laboriously recorded. Edmonds’ son, Chris, says he was blown away by what he read and stayed up that night searching these names on the Internet. The very first article he read gave him his first inkling that his father was a war hero. Searching for Lester Tanner, the soldier who’d stood side by side in formation with Roddie Edmonds, yielded an old article about Tanner, now a prominent New York attorney, selling his New York townhouse to Richard Nixon. The article contained a fascinating aside: Tanner mentioned that an American Sergeant, Roddie Edmonds, had saved his life and the life of other American Jewish servicemen during World War II. Chris contacted Tanner, as well as several other witnesses, and slowly pieced together the story of his father’s
wartime heroism. Thanks to his work, on December 2, 2015, Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds was honored by the State of Israel as “Righteous Among the Nations,” the first American serviceman so honored. Chris Edmonds jokes that his father “must have had a superhero cape in his closet” but Roddie Edmonds’ dedication to his fellow men seems to have been a deep, fundamental value. Avner Shalev, Chairman of Yad Vashem, points out that Sgt. Edmonds “seemed like an ordinary American soldier, but he had an extraordinary sense of responsibility and dedication to his fellow human beings.” His son concurs: “My father always had a strong sense of duty, of responsibility to his fellow human being, whoever they were…He was a man of great religious faith and an unwavering moral code and set of values to which he was completely dedicated.”

That moral code gave Sgt. Edmonds the strength to face death and risk his life to save others. It gave him the courage one cold morning to stand up to a POW Commandant who held the power of life and death in his hands and declare: “We are all Jews.”

If You Will Labor in Torah Study

I will give you rainfall in its time, the land will give forth with abundance, the trees of the field will produce fruit…you will eat until you are satisfied. . . There will be peace in land...” However, “if you do not guard my statutes . . . you will suffer diseases and famine. . . you will plant and not harvest. . . your enemies will chase you. . . the skies will turn to iron. . . wild animals will attack . . . [and finally,] an avenging sword will come into the land.” Rashi explains that the pivotal point of these two paths is: If you will labor in Torah. If you will labor in Torah, then you as a nation will find great success. Your enemies will fear you, and you will rise ever higher. If, however, you cease to labor in Torah study, then curses will befall you.

In short, our success or failure as a nation hinges upon this one activity. However, as Rashi also points out, this concept of laboring in Torah study is not found in the posuk. The words are, “If you will go in the ways of my statutes.” Nowhere does it specify what this refers to. Rashi explains that it cannot refer to keeping the mitzvahs because that is specifically mentioned at the end of the posuk. So by process of elimination, he reasons that this must be referring to laboring in Torah study. This Rashi is difficult to understand. There seems to be no indication of the concept in the posuk. Granted, learning Torah is very significant, and we may know from other sources that laboring in Torah study is central to serving HASHEM, but there doesn’t seem to be any indication here that this statement is speaking about laboring in Torah study. How does Rashi know that this statement of, ”If you will go in the ways of my statutes,” refers to laboring in Torah study, as opposed to any

The inner workings of the human The answer to this question stems from understanding the inner nature of man. The Chovos Ha’Levovos (Shaar Avodas Elokim) explains that HASHEM created man from two very distinct elements. Part of man is pure intellect and wisdom. This part of the person only wishes to do that which is noble and proper. It desires to be generous and giving. It needs to do that which is good and right. This part deeply hungers to experience HASHEM. Chazal call this segment the “Nefesh Ha’Sichili” – the pure soul. However, there is another component of the human personality that is pure instinct and desire. That part of the individual doesn’t care about anything but fulfilling its needs and wants. It is comprised of base appetites and

How does Rashi know that “going in the ways of HASHEM,” means laboring in Torah study? inclinations. This is referred to as the “Nefesh Ha’Bahami” – the animal soul.
The human is in a constant state of flux When HASHEM created man, He took these two diverse segments and mixed them together, creating a new synthesis called man. Man has two competing sides to him, each one crying out to fulfill it needs, each one demanding its fill. These two elements are in competition for dominance of the person. Much like a muscle that grows stronger with use and atrophies with disuse, each side is constantly being strengthened or weakened. If a person gives in to his animal instincts, those instincts become stronger and more dominant. If a person listens to his spiritual soul, it becomes stronger, gaining primacy over his personality. The human is in constant flux, with one side or the other always growing, always gaining supremacy and control over the person. Man was put on this planet to grow. By resisting the pull of the animal soul and allowing the pure soul to flourish, man elevates himself and reaches the state of perfection of which he is capable. On the other hand, if he gives in to the cries of the animal soul, he elevates it, allowing it to take control of him. His appetites become stronger and dominate him until they effectively rule over him. He becomes more animal than man.
The Torah: the ultimate guide for self-perfection
certain foods, and we are warned against certain activities because they give an unfair edge to the animal soul. However, any activity that a person engages in strengthens one side or the other. When a person eats, sleeps, works, or goes about all of his daily activities, these physical actions strengthen the Nefesh Ha’Bahami. In a sense, there is an unfair lead given to the animal soul. All day long it is in its element, and by being utilized, it is thereby strengthened. To bring balance to the equation, HASHEM gave us specific mitzvos to nourish the Nefesh Ha’Sichili. The single greatest nutrient of the nishomah is learning Torah. For the nishomah, Torah is like rocket fuel. When a person learns Torah, his nishomah is strengthened and invigorated. It becomes fortified and then takes the lead in the battle against the Nefesh Ha’Bahami. However, without it, the nishomah doesn’t stand a fighting chance because the animal soul is so much more in its element in this world. This seems to be the answer to Rashi. Since this expression, “If you will go in the ways of my statutes” is the pivotal point of the Jewish people’s destiny, it must be referring to that element that is the key to the equation: laboring in Torah study. Therefore, Rashi points this out almost as the translation of the words. There is a great lesson for us in this concept. The Jewish people is never stagnant. We are either going up towards great heights or down to the lowest abyss. The single greatest nourishment for the soul of the individual, and therefore for the soul of the nation, is laboring in Torah study. If we engage in it, support it, and actively pursue it, we will flourish as a people and enjoy unparalleled success. If not…
Rashi states that the pivotal point of Jewish destiny is dependent upon our toiling in Torah study. If we labor in Torah, we will enjoy great success.
The Question
There is no mention in the posukim of the Shema about “laboring in Torah study.” What right does Rashi have to put this concept into the Torah?
The Answer
The posukim are laying out the destiny of the Jewish nation as being dependent upon a certain activity. Since it can’t be referring to keeping the mitzvos, it must be referring to that which is central to the level of our people: Torah study.
The life lesson
We see the vital nature of Torah study. The human by nature is in flux. It isn’t good enough to have once learned and to know why we are here. If a person isn’t growing, he is shrinking. A Jew must always re-engage in Torah study. It is the fuel for our nishomah. Without it, we cannot survive.

of Shalom bayis As the common saying goes, “Opposites attract.” You may or may not agree, depending on your particular set of life experiences, but when it comes to marriage, there are two ways to look at this statement. OppOsites
attract

On sOme level, this must be
true, otherwise, people would never get married at all. But… they are still opposites. Men are different from women in almost every respect, and this is certainly no accident. It is told in the name of the Rebbe Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk zy”a that if husband and wife were not total opposites, it would be impossible for them to bring children into the world. Nonetheless, it still looks like a recipe for disaster, and this is actually what the Torah teaches us. The famous Midrash ( parashas Vayetzei) tells of a wealthy lady who came to Rabi Yosi bar Chalafta and demanded to know what God has been doing since He created the world. When she heard that He was “only” busy with making shidduchim, she decided to try her hand at it, too – and the results were catastrophic. None of the couples she paired managed to survive more than a day of married life together. One might think that Hakadosh Baruch Hu, knowing as He does the natures of all His creations, would have far greater success in matching people who are compatible with one another.

But this is not what we see. Rather, the same Midrash continues with Rabi Yosi agreeing with the lady that making shidduchim is exceedingly difficult, and that therefore, God “pairs them against their will, not by their own choices…” It’s certainly possible for God to pair up like-minded individuals – why would He choose not to? The Midrash concludes: “Those who choose to sing in joy and appreciation do so; those who choose not to sing, cry instead…” What does this come to tell us?

Most likely not – any minor disagreements were surely ironed out beforehand, and major disagreements would probably have led to the engagement being called off. Did you ever see a husband and wife arguing? What happened? Oh – you’re not as compatible as you thought you were? Where was the seichel to realize this, before you got married?

It would seem that Hakadosh Baruch Hu specially engineered matters- set up an elaborate smokescreen, so to speakto get two totally different people to somehow agree to spend the rest of their lives together. Just knowing this fact is going to help you get over the first hurdle, namely, the “Is he/she really my bashert?” question that is likely to pop up very quickly. The answer to this question is “Yes”with the proviso that bashert doesn’t necessarily mean what you thought it did. It certainly doesn’t mean that you will see eye to eye on everything, or even on most things. Of course you both have to be committed to a Torah lifestyle within broad parameters, but, sometimes shockingly, the similarities often stop there. Nonetheless, you are meant to be married to each other – there was no mistake. You weren’t stupid, or crazy, or bamboozled into marriage. You don’t even have to feel guilty that there is friction. And there is certainly nobody “out there” who would have made better marriage material for you. NoHakadosh Baruch Hu “paired you against your will.” He knew what He was doing – soon, b’ezras Hashem, will you.

The fact that we need to submit to a certain amount of deception in order to marry is actually not such a bad sign. Animals find their partners quite naturally and have no need for the institution of marriage to ensure the survival of the species. For Jews, however, marriage is not a matter of convenience. Neither is it the instinctive response of “We get along so well; let’s get married.” Rather, marriage is something holy, something very precious, something to be strived towards. The number of obstacles along the road to marital harmony only serve to highlight the great value of shalom bayis. We don’t get married because we want to get married – we get married because we need to be married. We need to gain something from being
married that we couldn’t possibly attain without it – and that something is: ourselves. Ask a non-Jew, “What does marriage start with?” and you will probably hear the answer, “Love.” Pointing out that marriages based on emotional love, especially in today’s world, tend to collapse into divorce pretty quickly, is unlikely to have any influence on the marrying couple. Most of the Western world long ago accepted that marriage will last as long as the emotions behind it do, and when they fizzle out, it’s time to leave. No hard feelings… This attitude is of course anathema to us. So, what is marriage based on? The right answer is: commitment. Commitment to your spouse, to build a home together; and, commitment to oneself. A mature adult does not enter into any commitment lightly, but intends and plans to be able to honor his word, regardless of almost all changes in circumstance. It is the privilege of an adult to be able to enter into a marriage or make any other oath. It should be a matter of honor, of self-esteem, to keep one’s word even when it’s a challenge to do so. This explains why marriage means so much more than doing what your spouse asks you to do, even with a smiling face. That is being committed to the other person; being committed to yourself, however, entails doing what is required for the marriage, even without being asked to do so. Even if the other person is mevater, or unaware of a need,
your actions, expect to have a stormy ride. Of course, emotions don’t just include the basic, “Right now, I’m just not in the mood” to do whatever needs to be done. They also incorporate, “What! After what he did yesterday? After what she said this morning?” Remember: You are committed to yourself. You too are flawed. You too have faults that you would rather other people forgot about, or ignored. If you believe in yourself as a person who can build a compassionate marriage, then do it – don’t wait for the other person to start.

“Those who choose to sing in joy and appreciation do so; those who choose not to sing, cry instead…” In many cases, despite the best efforts of husband or wife, the other spouse is simply not sufficiently invested in the marriage. How can the hard-working, determined spouse be expected to sing in joy when they see their work being either ignored, invalidated, or even sabotaged? Is this not a tragedy? On one level, the tragedy is undeniable. “If only…” tells us that things could have been so much better, so much more harmonious and productive. But only one of the partners has really lost the opportunity to build an everlasting edifice – not the one who tried and “failed” but rather the one who never tried at all. Marriage is an opportunity to build ourselves – regardless of the outcome, which is, as in all other matters, in Hashem’s hands. Surrendering our hopes and expectations is probably one of the hardest things for a striving human being to do – but if we do not wish to succumb to despair, we must learn this lesson. Then, and only then, will we be able to see the joy and appreciation- the joy of building ourselves through adverse circumstances, and the appreciation for being given the opportunity to do so. And then daven that your spouse will merit to do so, too.

Delightful Dairy Menu for Shavuos Gitta Bixenspanner n.d.
With Shavuos around the corner it is never too early to plan for this festive Yom Tov. Dairy is featured here as it is very commonly served in many homes in honor of the giving of the Torah, when the Jews were given the commandment of separating meat and milk and thus had to resort to dairy dishes until their utensils were properly prepared and ready for meat fare.

Cabbage Potato Soup Ingredients 1 onion 2 carrot 3 celery stick 2 garlic cloves 2 Tbs olive oil plus extra to serve 5 potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes
6 cups water or vegetable stock 1 cup milk 8 oz. sour cream 2 packages shredded Bodek cabbage Salt and pepper to taste 1 inch ginger Directions Chop the onion, carrot, celery and garlic in a food processor. Heat the oil over a medium heat in a large saucepan. Add the vegetables and potatoes, season well, then reduce the heat and cover the pan. Gently cook for about 5 mins until starting to soften, then add the stock, turn up the heat and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 mins more, or until all the vegetables are tender. Whizz the soup in the food processor until smooth, then return to the pan and add the cabbage and ginger. Simmer for 20 mins until the cabbage is tender, then season with salt and pepper to taste and serve Preparation 20 minutes Serves 8

Light Sole Fillet with Vegetables Light meals are a bonus especially when they are so tasty and downright good for you. With all the Yom Tov specialties this dish will be a keeper for year aro und. Ingredients 8 sole fillets 3 zucchini, diced 2 yellow squash, diced 1/2 cup chopped onion 3 garlic cloves, chopped 6 plum tomatoes, diced 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning 1 Tbs chopped fresh basil 2 tsp salt, divided ½ cup fresh lemon juice 1 tsp black pepper, divided 1 tsp paprika 3 Tbs olive oil, divided

Directions In a small bowl mix together last 5 ingredients and sprinkle sole fillets evenly; set aside. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat. Add zucchini, yellow squash, onion, and garlic; cook 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, Italian seasoning, and remaining salt and pepper; continue cooking 4 to 5 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Remove to a bowl and cover to keep warm. Add remaining oil to skillet and sautĂŠ sole 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until fish flakes easily with a fork and is golden brown. Remove fish to a platter, top with vegetables, sprinkle with basil, and serve with a side of specialty garlic and parsnip mashed potatoes a family favorite. Recipe follows. Preparation 20 minutes Serves 8

SPECIALTY GARLIC & PARSNIP MASHED POTATOES INGREDIENTS 4 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces 4 medium parsnips, peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces 3 medium garlic cloves ½ cup milk ¼ cup butter 2 tsp sea salt ½ cup Panko, crumbs. Panko are Japanese bread crumbs. ¼ cup melted butter Freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS Place potatoes, parsnips and garlic cloves into a medium size sauce pan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 25 minutes or until potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork. Mash potato mixture with a potato masher. Stir milk and butter into potato/parsnips, add salt and mash again until smooth and creamy. Either spoon or pipe potato mixture onto small individual size serving dishes or parchment-lined baking sheets leaving 2 inches between mounds. A welloiled muffin tin can work very well. To pipe, place a
large star tip on a pastry bag and fill bag with potato mixture. Pipe circular swirls into small serving dishes on parchment-lined baking sheet. If you don’t have a pastry bag, snip one bottom corner off of a plastic zippered freezer bag. Place large star tip into snipped out opening in bag. Carefully spoon the potato mixture into bag. Squeeze the air out of bag and twist the top closed. To pipe, hold the filled bag perpendicular to the serving dish or baking tin, then force the potato mixture through the top by squeezing the end of the bag with your writing hand and supporting the bag with your other hand. Pipe circular swirls. Sprinkle mounds or swirls with1 teaspoon panko crumbs and drizzle with melted butter. At this point the potatoes can be baked at 350˚ for 25-30 minutes until heated through and tips are slightly browned. They can also be frozen on a baking sheet, then wrapped in plastic wrap and placed in a zip lock bag. To bake frozen potatoes, remove while still frozen from bag and place on a baking sheet. Allow to unthaw for 1 hour then bake as directed above. Preparation 15 minutes Serves 10-12

Delightful Zucchini Squares When you serve zucchini this way, even the pickiest of eaters will be asking for seconds of their veggies. Our recipe for Zucchini Squares is a baked zucchini dish that’s made with grated cheese, lots of seasonings, and a few other ingredients. It’s one of our favorite zucchini side dishes! Ingredients 8 eggs well beaten 1 large chopped onion 1/2 teaspoon garlicsalt 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (optional) 2 cloves minced garlic 1 Tbs chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup vegetable or coconut oil 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 Tbs melted butter or oil 1 Tbs baking powder

½ tsp salt 5 cups grated zucchini 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. Sauté onions in coconut oil until translucent about 5 minutes In a large bowl, beat eggs, then add remaining ingredients; mix well. Pour mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, or until set in center. Let cool 5 minutes, then cut into squares. Preparation 25 minutes Serves 12

Easy Layered Vegetable and Protein Salad In our home salads are always served with every meal to add color and variety to our menu. This layered salad can be served with the meal or in the afternoon to stave off hunger pangs while waiting for the late evening Seuda. The possibilities are endless as you can feel free to to throw together whatever you have available. Ingredients 1 medium head iceberg lettuce, cut into bite-sized pieces 2 pints grape tomato, halved 2 avocado, peeled, pitted, and sliced 4 hard-cooked eggs, chopped or sliced (optional) 1 red pepper sliced 1 yellow pepper sliced 4 scallions (green onions), thinly sliced
1 (4-ounce) package crumbled goat feta cheese Vinaigrette Dressing ½ cup olive oil ½ cup lemon juice ½ cup water 1 flat tsp salt 1 tsp mustard Directions In a small bowl mix all ingredients for vinaigrette dressing, reserve. In a large pretty bowl arrange vegetables in layers and sprinkle with a simple vinaigrette dressing. Alternatively, spoon into individual bowls and enjoy! Serves 6

Simple Onion Kugel For those that favor the flavor of onions this is a delicious side dish for a festive Shavuos meal. Easy to prepare as there is no need for sautéing nor separating eggs. Just mix everything together, the result is very flavorful. Enjoy! Ingredients 5 onions thinly sliced ½ cup oil ½ cup water 1 Tsp salt 1 ¼ cup flour 2 tsp baking powder
Salt and pepper to taste 6 whole eggs slightly beaten until fluffy Directions Preheat oven to 350 Mix all ingredients together well pour into a 9 x11 pan lined with baking paper Bake until lightly brown about 30-35 minutes. Serve hot. Freezes very well. Note: When using whole wheat flour use a little less as it is denser. Preparation 10 minutes Serves 12

T
hey are everywhere: in school, in the boardroom, at the doctor’s office, even in synagogues. They are those forever-spinning little triangular gadgets that will set you back anywhere from $3 - $25 and become an inseparable extension of the hand. Interestingly enough, people report that on first sight they are turned off by the concept of a fidget spinner, but once they try it out they are hooked. But what most people don’t know is that fidget spinners are the brainchild of Catherine Hettinger, a creative inventor and innovator. After a visit to Israel a number of years ago she saw firsthand how young Arab children were spending their time throwing stones at Israelis. Catherine decided that she needed to find a replacement for the stones, and thus the fidget spinner was born. Sadly, her fidget spinner did not replace the stone throwing, but Catherine did stumble upon something that has now become a wildly popular fad. Alas, Catherine isn’t making any money on the lucrative toy. She gave up the patent years ago because she couldn’t afford the $400 renewal fee. But she isn’t bitter. She told the Guardian, “Several people have asked me: ‘Aren’t you really mad?’ But for me I’m just pleased that something I designed is something that people understand and really works for them.” What is it about these fidget spinners that make them

so wildly popular and addicting? I am not an expert in trends or ADHD solutions, but I’d like to share one idea that perhaps gives a deeper reason behind the phenomenon. After all, according the Jewish perspective, the physical world reflects the spiritual. So it stands to reason that this fad is tapping into something that resonates on a deeper, spiritual plane. Judaism believes that human beings w e r e created with a quest for perfection. We are born as an unpolished diamond. Raised and nurtured by our parents and educators, we then set out on our own to pursue the quest that is our very existence. Jewish tradition teaches that life equals growth;

a day without growth is a day that has not truly been lived. That is why human beings are referred to as mahalchim, travelers, alluding to the constant movement that characterizes our existence as we travel to toward our destination of perfection. Life is for constant growth and movement. There is no standing still. Perhaps our attraction to the fidget spinner reflects a kinship that we feel with its constant movement, and the ease with which that sustained movement is achieved. Imagine a life that is constantly and easily moving! This is, of course, a pale imitation of the real-life movement that our spiritual sub-conscious is craving, but it taps our innermost desire to grow and move. So whether you are a current fidget spinner addict or a fidget spinner adversary, here is a little “spin” on life. Your soul is craving movement and growth in its quest for spiritual perfection. You can either try to placate it with a cheap knock-off, artificial feeling of growth, or you can really satisfy it with the thrill of genuine growth and soul-fulfillment. NO BAKE SANDWICH COOKIE CHEESECAKE Shavuos is synonymous with cheese cake, make this delightful cake with simple ingredients. It does not require baking, just enjoy it as is. No need to heat up the kitchen on a hot day. INGREDIENTS: CRUST 2 cups (216g) chocolate sandwich crumbs (from about 20 chocolate flavored cookies) 1/4 cup (56g) butter, melted FILLING 3 packages JJ cream cheese, room temperature 1/2 cup (104g) sugar 1 tsp vanilla 8 oz. whipped cream 1 1/2 cups (162g) cookie crumbs (from about 16 cookies) 7-10 sandwich cookies, chopped, optional WHIPPED CREAM TOPPING 3/4 cup (180ml) heavy whipping cream, cold 6 Tbs (44g) powdered sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Sandwich cookie crumbs for the top, optional Sandwich cookie, cut in half DIRECTIONS: To make the crust, combine the sandwich cookie
crumbs and the melted butter. Press the crumbs into the bottom and halfway up the sides of a 9 inch spring form pan. Set in the refrigerator to firm. To make the filling, mix cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together in a large bowl with a mixer until smooth and well combined. Fold in the whipped cream. Add the sandwich cookie crumbs and chopped crumbs and gently mix until well combined. Spread the filling evenly into crust and smooth the top. Set in the refrigerator until firm, 4-5 hours. Remove the cheesecake from the pan. To make the whipped cream topping, add the heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract to a large bowl. Whip on high speed until stiff peaks form. Pipe swirls of whipped cream around the top of the cheesecake. Top with additional Oreo crumbs and Oreo halves, if desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Preparation 20 minutes Makes: 12-14 SLICES
