A

h, the shidduch crisis. Everybody’s talking about it, everybody’s suffering from it, and everybody’s got an opinion on it. From the parents of every ‘best bochur in the yeshiva,’ to the siblings of every ‘girl mit alleh maalos;’ from the guy who’s stuck in the freezer at BMG to the over-25-yearold girl who’s isn’t getting redt - everybody’s got some kind of brilliant, ‘why didn’t I think of that?’ solution to the kallah-less calamity that’s pervading our frum community. No question about it, girls have JRW LW LQĂ€QLWHO\ harder in today’s shidduchim arena. It’s gotten to the point where many shadchanim won’t even listen when a parent submits a girl’s name. They’ve got girls a dime a dozen, all of whom are pretty, size triple zero, have great middos, and will support their husbands until 120 (with plenty of help from the Ribono Shel Olam, and Tatty.) So, shadchanim are only on the lookout for guys. But not just any guys,

They WRR ÀQG WKH VKLGGXFK SURFHVV H[FHHGLQJO\ GLIÀFXOW So, what’s causing this crisis, and how do we make it disappear? One theory that seems to be voiced whenever shidduchim are discussed, is this: Go about the dating process the Chassidishe way. For most, the idea may take some getting used to - but it’s being debated at every turn, in Litvishe and Yeshivishe circles. That’s because looking at statistics, Chassidim tend to have a much easier time making matches. In the Chassidishe velt, the shidduch crisis is negligible. While shidduchim in general are as GLIÀFXOW DV NULDV <DP 6XI JLUOV in particular are not having it DQ\ PRUH GLIÀFXOW WKDQ ER\V )RU WKH XQLQLWLDWHG ÀUVW let me explain the differences between Chassidishe and Litvishe/Yeshivishe dating processes. In the Litvishe world, the main burden (and yes, it is a burden) of deciding upon one’s partner for life, falls on the boy and girl

themselves. When a shidduch LV VXJJHVWHG WKH SDUHQWV Ă€UVW recieve resumes about the girl/ boy. Resumes!! It’s like the kids are for sale on Craigslist or Ebay (Take advantage of this great offer: Faigy comes along with a BMW and 5 years of support!), or applying for the job of ‘husband’ or ‘wife.’ Photos and references are included, along with a list of schools and camps s/he attended, exceptional abilities s/he possesses, etc. Then, the parents send their children to meet one another. Boy picks girl up from her house, where KH Ă€UVW PHHWV ZLWK 7DWW\ DQG Mommy, and shmoozes for a few minutes. The kids then JR RXW DQG LI WKH Ă€UVW GDWH LV successful, they continue to go out many more times in order to “get to knowâ€? one another. While sitting in luxurious restaurants by the glow of romantic candlelight, each putting his/her best foot forward and acting on their very best behavior, the kids see if they can get along. The parents rely on the children’s judgment and allow them to continue seeing one another many more times. What’s to make the boy decide after eight or nine dates? What will suddenly be the clincher? It’s hard to tell. Once things start getting serious, the parents begin making more in-depth inquiries into the shidduch. But by then, the “coupleâ€? already likes one another. It’s

that much harder for a parent to point out imperfections or concerns that they may ÀQG RXW DERXW after the fact. Parents of the boy often don’t get to meet the girl until the boy is already sure she’s “the one.” After roughly ten dates, the boy (aged approx. 23) and girl (age approx. 18) must decide whether the charming, good looking, perfectly mannered person in their company will have the middos, the personality, the character, the good nature, the overall package needed to complement them and make a suitable mate. Their parents cannot help much with that decision, as they barely know the prospective son or daughter in law. So the FKLOGUHQ DORQH PXVW ÀQG DOO the right reasons to make the shidduch work. Now let’s look at the Chassidishe way. Before the boy or girl get to meet one another, the parents make thorough inquiries about everything there is to know with regard to a prospective shidduch. They call references and exhaust the phone lines, extracting every pertinent detail that will guide them in knowing whether or not this shidduch LV ÀWWLQJ 7KHLU FKLOGUHQ ZLOO

not see one another until the parents already approve of the date’s middos, personality, character and good nature. Once the parents already wholeheartedly endorse the shidduch based on comprehensive inquiries, the parents then meet with the prospective son or daughter in law in person. The parents, who are older and wiser and know what is best for their children - know what to look for in a shidduch. They are mature enough to look beyond externals and discern whether or not the boy/ girl in question will make a good match for their child. After getting the go-ahead, the boy (approx. age 19) and girl (approx. age 18) meet at a dining room table. There’s no ambiance, no romantic lighting, no distractions. Just the two of them, speaking face to face. Meetings are kept to a minimum - 2-3 times, at most. ,I WKH FKLOGUHQ ÀQG FKHLQ LQ each others’ eyes, usually a rav or Rebbe is consulted. If not for the parents’ endorsement, a golden shidduch would’ve been prevented, because of socks, had things been left up to the girl’s judgment. JL: Is there any message you’d like to give our readers regarding shidduchim in general? LC: Yes. Every marriage will have some degree of surprises - so don’t aim for 100% perfection or nothing. I also think people should be much more careful about giving information when parents ask them questions about a boy or girl. Answering with enthusiasm when you hear the girl’s name can go a long way, whereas saying “Oh, Chaya Schwartz,” in a long drawn-out voice, can literally destroy a shidduch. It is important not to break the momentum of a shidduch by schlepping things over a long period of time. It does not always indicate that the

being part of the “grown up” world. They are treated with maturity and play a huge role in the decision-making. What they must always keep in mind is that each date should be treated as a serious step towards marriage and not as a frivolous night out. Whereas years ago the boy’s parents were in the dark as to who their son was seeing right up until the l’chaim, today it has become the norm, even in the Litvishe world, for the boy’s parents to meet the girl earlier on, sometimes even right at the beginning or by the third or fourth date. JL: Is there any way in which you feel the Chassidishe way of making shidduchim may be more positive?

)% 'HÀQLWHO\ , PXVW admit that the Chassidishe way often seems better to me. The Chassidishe derech includes much more parental involvement. In typical situations, no one knows the child better, or has the child’s best interests in mind, more than the parents. Children, as well, naturally feel more secure being guided and don’t really want such big achrayus resting on their own thin shoulders. It’s scary and overwhelming. The custom of sitting in has its maalos too, providing privacy and tznius that dating doesn’t always allow for. This can often prevent uncomfortable situations. There is a common misconception amongst people who favor the Litvishe derech. They feel that if the couple will

meet many times, they will get to know each other better. I totally disagree. One does not get to really know the other party until after marriage. No one fully lets down their guard during dating, no matter what number date it is. Though a complete overhaul of the Litvishe dating process will certainly not be that quick in coming, and though I’m sure there will be plenty of opposition to adopting the Chassidishe derech throughout the Yeshivishe world, every RSWLRQ LQ WKH ÀJKW DJDLQVW the shidduch crisis should be openly and honestly considered. Summer Recipes

GITTA BIXENSPANNER, ND

It’s summer! Finally some hot days to enjoy the great outdoors, and easy recipes that don’t take too much time. Who wants to sit in a hot kitchen slaving over elaborate meals when all the kids want is to grab a bite and run! Adults probably also prefer to open the refrigerator than stand at the stove. With produce at its peak this time of year, take advantage and load up on nature’s bounty. Delicious fruits and vegetables abound at farmers’ markets and in your local grocery. Besides being low in calories, produce is loaded with vitamins, ǡ Ƥ Ǥ Save the oranges and apples for fall, and load up on fresh berries, melons, a variety of greens, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, beets, pea pods and supernutritious and low-calorie ripe fruits of all kinds. To keep your cool and cut your time in the kitchen, I suggest that you wash large amounts of green leafy vegetables, dry them thoroughly by running them through a vegetable spinner and

store them in bags. They will be ready and beckoning when you need them. Fruits can also be cut up and stored in containers or bags; they’ll be welcome any time the children come in clamoring for a snack. Add Ƥ ǡ meal ready in minutes. On hot summer days, salads are the most popular. Many salads can be converted into a whole meal when adding some protein ǡ Ƥ ǡ Ǥ Here are some smart ways to spruce up your salads and add variety to your dishes!

1. 2.

Add fruit to salad greens. Consider adding fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, apples, or grapes. Or toss in some dried fruits like cranberries, apricots, and golden raisins. Avocados, olives, and toasted nuts add a whole new taste dimension, not to mention some heart-healthy oils. Cooked whole grains such as hard wheat berries, quinoa, and Ƥ Ǥ Ƥ Ǥ

AVOCADO-CORN SALSA

3.

This colorful salsa comes together in a snap with avocado, fresh corn and ripe tomatoes. Delicious served with tortilla chips or any other cracker or just as a topping over your favorite green lettuce.

Choose from a variety of tasty greens: some are sweeter, such as romaine, napa and bok choy; while others have a nutty or bitter taste, like endive, radicchio, arugula, watercress, dandelion and spinach. Mix the tastes and textures and even throw in a few herbs like dill or cilantro so that each bite surprises your taste buds.

4.

Pull your salad together with dressing. Choose a ginger dressing for Chinese chicken over a mix of crisp romaine and watercress. Try lime-cilantro vinaigrette for that steak, black bean, and avocado salad. You can make your own healthy vinaigrettes by infusing vinegars with some of your favorite herbs, and you can turn high-fat creamy dressings into healthier vinaigrettes. You’ll have a salad you’ll be proud to serve to your family and guests!

Ingredients 2 avocados, diced 1 cup thawed frozen corn kernels 2 plum tomatoes, chopped 2 tsp. chopped fresh cilantro or basil lime juice, to taste salt, to taste Directions Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Sprinkle lime juice and dressing over the salad and spoon into 4 individual bowls, adding some crackers for dipping. Preparation time: 10 minutes Serves 4

Here are a few salad recipes that are tasty, Ǥ incorporating any veggies you have at hand into any vegetable salad.

CHINESE COLESLAW WITH PEANUT DRESSING Summer is a great time to experiment with the various lettuces available this glorious season. My family favors napa cabbage above all others. Napa is easy to check, and ƪ Ǥ Ingredients 1 chilled head green cabbage, outer leaves removed 1 wedge purple cabbage, for color 4 napa leaves ½ red onion, sliced thinly ½ bunch basil leaves, washed and checked 1 handful dry roasted unsalted peanuts Dressing: Ń cup smooth unsalted peanut butter 1–2 tsp. extra virgin olive oil juice of 1 large lime 1 Tbsp. coconut milk, as needed 1–2 tsp. agave nectar or sugar, to taste 1 pinch ginger, to taste sea salt, to taste Directions Cut the green cabbage in thirds. Remove the core and shred the remaining wedges into thin strips, along with the wedge of purple cabbage. You can do this by hand with a large chef’s knife or with a box grater. Toss into a colander. Rinse in cold water and pat dry. Place in a salad bowl. Remove the basil stems and add to the salad bowl, along with the napa leaves and the red onion. Toss to distribute. To make the dressing: Combine the peanut butter, olive oil, lime juice, and coconut milk and whisk until smooth. Add the agave, ginger, and sea salt, to taste. If it seems too thick, add a little more coconut milk or lime juice, 1 tablespoon at a time. ƪ Ǥ Pour the dressing onto the slaw and toss lightly until well coated. Cover and chill until serving. Serves 6

FROZEN DAIRY FRUIT POPS

Freeze pops, which children eat throughout the summer, are often colored and sugar laden. These fruit pops are simple to create and will be a much better and healthier option for your children. Ingredients 1½ cups vanilla yogurt Banana Pops: 2 bananas, peeled and chopped 2 Tbsp. honey ǣ 1 pint strawberries, rinsed and hulled ½ cup apple juice Kiwi Pops: 1 kiwi, peeled and diced ¼ piece honeydew, rind removed Directions ǡ ơ ͜ paper, each 6 inches wide. Fold into cone shapes, making sure the pointed ends are closed, to prevent Ǥ Ǥ cones in glasses for support. In a food processor or blender, blend ½ cup of yogurt with the ingredients for banana pops, then ½ cup of yogurt with the ingredients for strawberry pops, and the remaining ½ cup of yogurt with the ingredients for kiwi pops. Pour the mixture into the cones. Freeze until semifrozen, push a popsicle stick into the fruit and freeze overnight. Each combination makes 2-3 cones. Feel free to double or triple the recipe and put them into ice pop molds available in dollar store outlets.

WATERMELON ICE POPS What can be better and healthier for everyone than real fruit on a stick? Kids will love the taste of these popsicles and you can dish them out freely, knowing they’re so healthy! Ingredients 2 cups seedless watermelon chunks 5 Tbsp. lime juice, or to taste 1 Tbsp. honey or agave nectar, or to taste popsicle mold Directions Blend all the ingredients together until completely smooth. ƪ Ǥ and pour into popsicle molds; insert handles. Freeze 5 hours or until set, preferably overnight. To serve, run the molds quickly under warm water for 15 Ǥ mediately. Remember the golden rule: lick, don’t chew!
