I
made my purchase at the supermarket. Three dollars and eighty-four cents. I gave the cashier four one-dollar bills and waited for my change as the bagger put the items in a paper bag. My change rolled down the metal arm of the coin dispenser and I reached into the cup to retrieve my 16 cents. But as I scooped the coins into my hand, something felt wrong. Inside the metal cup were many, many coins. Quarters, dimes, nickels. There were a few paper dollar bills. Some eight dollars of change was inside the cup, far more than the meager 16 cents due to me. “You gave me too much change!” I told the cashier. He looked at me quizzically, almost as if I was accusing him of something. I clarified. “There should only have been 16 cents here. Look – there are many dollars’ worth of coins instead. There are some dollar bills. It’s not mine.” “Probably the last shopper left it there. Just keep it.” “It’s not mine to keep. Could be it was left by someone else or could be the machine is broken. Either way, the change belongs to the store now.” It did not even occur to me at that moment that coin dispensers do not, cannot, dispense paper money. “You should just take it,” the bagger chimed in. “Just keep the money.” “With respect to you both, this money does not belong to you, so you really lack the authority to give it away. The money belongs to the store. It’s not mine to take.

Please take it from me and put it back in the machine.” “That will mess up our accounting at the end of the day. We have to account for each penny taken in as payment, each penny disbursed as change. You are doing us a favor by keeping it. We have no way to return it. It would mean a lot of paperwork. So, take it.” “I cannot take it. It’s not my money. It belongs to the store and whoever owns this store or this chain of supermarkets is entitled to it.” “We will clear it with the manager later. Just take it.” “Look, gentlemen – I appreciate what you are saying, but this is an area that I am very conscientious about. Other people’s money is not something I am lax about. Even the manager is an employee here and it’s not his money to give away. I will not take the money and I’m returning it to the metal cup. This time you can keep the change, including my 16 cents. Thanks.” We all smiled at each other and I picked up my grocery items and began to walk away. As I did, I heard the cashier say to the bagger, “Well, there is one Jew who passed the test.” The entire encounter had been a set up. That machine is automated and would never release that much change. And machines never release dollar bills. The coins and the bills had been put there by the cashier to test the integrity of customers.
Was it his own scheme, or was it a test being run by the store itself? What seemed clear to me was that the cashier and the bagger had been waiting to see how I might react. Would I nonchalantly pick up the money and say nothing? Would I even stop to notice that there was a large wad of change? Would I bring it up to them, but then consent to keeping money that I was not entitled to? Would I try to justify keeping the money in some way and just take the cash? And I do not know what they were testing me and other shoppers for. Was it to check out their stereotype about Jews and money? I might have inferred something prejudicial like that from the comment they had shared about “the Jew who passed the test.” I thought about the rationale for my display of honesty in public. Was I refraining from taking the money in order to make a Kiddush Hashem (sanctifying the name of Hashem) by conducting myself according to His Will, or was my concern about not making a Chillul Hashem (desecrating Hashem’s name) and not being perceived as, well, someone who fits their stereotype? Was I honest because I was brought up that way, and it was more of a reflex than a matter of conscious choice, or was I just a person trying to avert the reprimands of my conscience, which would torment me for taking someone else’s money? Bottom line, it was tainted money: ‘t ain’t mine, ‘t ain’t yours.

As a boy in Germany, seeing that Judenstempel on his passport made him realize that for the Nazis he was nothing but a Jewish object.
M
y father’s friend left Germany toward the end of 1938. Amid the horrors of Nazi Germany, his family debated a topic which echoed through many Jewish living rooms: Should they leave Germany or stay? This man – then a boy – was devastated by the spreading anti-Semitism. But how could he and his family abandon all they knew? Conditions in Germany were certain to improve. Germans would come to their senses. Perhaps this was youthful optimism but he was not alone. Of the half million Jews who lived in Germany in 1933, over 200,000 remained. His parents decided to get out of Germany, and the boy was heart-broken. It was only after he saw something on a particular piece of paper that he

understood Jews had no place in the “new” Germany. “It was the red ‘J’ on my passport.” Earlier in the year, the government decreed Jewish passports were invalid as of October 5, 1938. Jews were required to turn in existing passports which would then become valid only when stamped with a red ‘J’. This Judenstempel allowed other countries to more easily identify which Germans were Jewish refugees and turn them away. The color red made the Judenstempel easier to detect. Red meant danger. Warning. Beware. Was this a Nazi idea? A Swiss one? The boy did not care. The German government enacted this law. It was another measure to denigrate those who were “out.” It kept Jews from pretending to be something other than what they were. After all, the most dangerous Jews were ones who tried
to blend in with the good German Volk. During the years leading up to the passport incident, this boy had suffered and witnessed the suffering of others. But seeing this ‘J’ stamped on a legal document bearing his photograph and name was the first time he realized that for the Nazis, he was nothing but a Jewish object. “Now no one had to figure me out. The ‘J’ told them all they needed to know.” The “J” stamped out his uniqueness. He and the label became the same. It didn’t matter if he was smart, funny or creative. No one cared about his aspirations and the sports he loved to play. This young German boy left behind the familiar, his language and the people who stayed and had their futures stolen. Despite fears regarding his own future, he went without protest because he rejected the government’s attempts

to turn him into an object. He didn’t realize in 1938 that a red ‘J’ was paving the way for yellow Stars and tattooed numbers. He created a new life in a new country. He grew up, married and had children. And he experienced such joy in synagogue, praying as part of a Jewish community. He recognized the value of that community and the oneness of the Jewish people. But he also understood our community strengthens when each person maximizes his own potential. Minimizing the uniqueness of an individual weakens all Jews. This man spent a lifetime blocking out events he witnessed but each October, he recalled the horror he experienced upon viewing the red ‘J’ stamped on his passport for the first time. Each October, he felt especially grateful as he prayed alongside other Jews. He appreciated that each person he prayed with had distinctive traits and could never be an object. Unfortunately, labels continue to pervade our society, and just like the red “J” of 1938, they provide an excuse to cast empathy aside. They justify hateful rhetoric and cruel behavior. We must all find inspiration in the wisdom of my father’s friend. An Act that Echoes Though Time Parshas Vayeirah
“And Abraham awoke in the morning, hitched up his donkey, and took his two lads and Isaac with him. He split wood for the sacrifice and went to the place that HASHEM had commanded him.” – Genesis 22:3 Abraham was commanded with a supreme test, one of the greatest challenges ever presented to man: “Take your son, your only son, the son whom you love…” One has the right to ask, “What was so great about this act?” Even today we witness people who are willing to slaughter themselves – or their children – in the name of their beliefs, and we certainly don’t consider them great! Why is this act considered one of the ultimate accomplishments of man? The answer to this question lies in understanding not so much what Abraham did, but how he did it. The Father of the Jewish People Abraham lived to serve G-d. His every waking moment was devoted to spreading G-d’s name and bringing others to recognize their Creator. However, he knew that only through a distinct and separate people could the name of G-d be brought to its glory. Therefore, his ultimate aspiration was to be the father of the Jewish nation.

Yet for many, many years that dream didn’t come true. Abraham was 100 years old when he had Isaac. He waited month after month, year after year, begging, beseeching, and imploring HASHEM for this son – but to no avail. Finally, in a completely miraculous manner, at an age when both he and his wife couldn’t possibly parent a child, he was visited by angels who told him the news: “Your single greatest ambition, to be the father of the Jewish people, will come true through this child Isaac.” Abraham’s Relationship with His Son From the moment that Isaac was born, he was the perfect child. Not only was he nearly identical to Abraham in look and in nature, but also from the moment that he came to understanding, he went in the ways of his father. Abraham had many students, but there was only one who was truly devoted to knowing and understanding the ways of his teacher. That was Isaac. The bond of love and devotion that Abraham felt towards his “only” son is hard to imagine. The nature of a righteous person is to be kindly, compassionate, and giving. When such a person connects to an almost equally perfect person, the bond of love and devotion between them is extremely powerful. For years, this
relationship grew. It wasn’t until Isaac was 37 years old and in the prime of his life that G-d tested Abraham. This refined, caring, loving father was asked to slaughter and then prepare his most beloved child and disciple as a sacrifice – not to sit by and allow it, not to witness it, but to do it with his own hands. You would imagine that if such a person could actually muster the selfmastery to do this, it would be with a bitter and heavy heart. Yet that isn’t how the Torah describes the events. “And Abraham got up early in the morning, hitched up his donkey,” and set off on his journey The medieval commentator Rashi explains that Abraham acted out of character here. Abraham was an extremely wealthy and honored individual. He had hundreds of loyal students, and many, many servants. Hitching up his donkey was not something he normally did. Others did it for him. Yet this time was different because “love blinds.” Abraham was so enraptured with G-d’s command, so caught up in the moment, that he got carried away and did something that he never would have done himself. Great Day starts with a
heart, Abraham set out on a three-day expedition to accomplish this great deed. Along the way, Isaac discovered that he was to be the sacrifice. And so, he requested of his father: “Please bind me so that I don’t twitch and spoil the sacrifice.” Isaac was afraid that he might inadvertently move and spoil the process. Therefore, he said, “Please bind me.” Hence, this episode is known as “the binding of Isaac.” Abraham did just that. He tied Isaac’s arms and legs behind him, put him on the altar, and raised the knife to kill his son. The commentaries tell us that Abraham stood over Isaac “with tears in his eyes and great joy in his heart.” The tears in his eyes were the tears of a father parting with his most beloved son, but the joy in his heart was for the fantastic opportunity to show G-d that nothing, not even his most beloved son, was more precious to him than serving his Creator. The Act in Perspective And now the question becomes: how is it possible for a man to make the ultimate sacrifice in a manner that seems to transcend every emotional limitation? The binding of Isaac was a singular event that actualized the years of extraordinary self-perfection of Abraham’s life. Because he lived in this world, he felt real love for his child, but even that love was something he could harness to show his greater love of HASHEM. He achieved the perfect balance of a man in complete control.

The Undercover Spy Operation that Helped Foil a Nazi Plot in 1930s L.A. by Professor Steven J. Ross
O
n July 26, 1933, a group of Nazis held their first public rally in Los Angeles. As Jewish groups in the city debated how they should respond to Adolf Hitler’s persecution of Jews in Europe, L.A.’s Nazis, many of them German emigres, gathered at a biergarten downtown, wearing brown shirts and red, white and black armbands with swastikas. The Nazis belonged to a growing movement of white supremacists in L.A. that included many American brothers in hate: the Ku Klux Klan, a group of Hitler supporters known as the Silver Shirts, and a dozen like-minded organizations with vaguely patriotic names such as the American Nationalist Party, the Christian American Guard, and the National Protective Order of Gentiles. Hindenburg Park gained notoriety in the late 1930s when the Bund, a political group styling itself after the Nazis, staged several rallies there. (Historical Society of Crescenta) Some weeks ago, white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., chanted “Jews will not replace us.” Their predecessors were even less subtle: They called for “death to Jews.” Unwilling to wait and see if any of

them would act on their threats, Leon Lewis, a Jewish lawyer and World War I veteran who had helped found the Anti-Defamation League, decided to investigate the anti-Semitic hate groups. In August 1933, mere weeks after the rally, Lewis recruited four fellow World War I veterans, plus their wives, to go undercover and join every Nazi and fascist group in the city. Lewis’ recruits did not know there would be another world war. And they certainly did not know a Holocaust would occur in Europe. But once they had infiltrated the groups, they understood that they had to take the Nazi threat seriously. They repeatedly heard fellow Americans talk candidly about wanting to overthrow the government and kill every Jewish man, woman and child. Lewis’ operatives were all Christian, save for one Jew. They regarded their mission as an American one. Their intention was to gather sufficient evidence of illegal activities by the groups, then turn it over to the appropriate government agencies, after which Lewis planned to return to practicing law. What Lewis did not anticipate is that local authorities would prove indifferent to – or supportive of – the Nazis and fascists.
Within weeks of going undercover, Lewis’ network of spies discovered a plot to wrest control of armories in San Francisco, L.A. and San Diego – part of a larger plan to take over local governments and carry out a mass execution of Jews. Lewis immediately informed L.A. Police Chief James Edgar “Two-Gun” Davis of the Nazi scheme to seize weapons and, as Lewis warned in a memo later, to “foster a fascist form of government in the United States.” Lewis was shocked when Davis interrupted him to defend Hitler. The police chief, he noted in the memo, told him: “Germans could not compete economically with the Jews in Germany and had been forced to take the action they did.” The greatest danger the city faced, Davis insisted, was not from Nazis but from communists living in the heavily Jewish neighborhood of Boyle Heights. As far as Davis was concerned, every communist was a Jew and every Jew a communist. Lewis got a similar response from the Sheriff’s Department and local FBI agents, many of whom were sympathetic to the Nazis and fascists. He decided he had to continue the operation, and his spies agreed. From the summer of 1933 until 1945,

failed because Lewis’ operatives penetrated the inner circles of the hate groups and foiled them. Charles Slocombe, Lewis’ ace spy, thwarted two of the most deadly plots to kill Hollywood figures, one of them by turning Nazis and fascists against one another and raising fears that they might be arrested for murder due to leaks inside the German American
– of the burden of tracking down these dangerous elements. Nevertheless, he and his operatives continued to monitor the groups throughout the war years. Leon Lewis understood that hate knows no national boundaries. Foreignborn Nazis and American-born Silver Shirts and Klansmen gladly joined together in targeting Jews and communists. And few Americans, either inside or outside the government, tried to stop them in those early years.
while many Americans closed their eyes to the hate growing around them, Lewis’ spies and informants, who numbered close to two dozen at the height of operations, risked their lives to stop Hitler’s minions and alert citizens to the danger these groups posed. They uncovered a series of Nazi plots. There was a plan to murder 24 Hollywood actors and power figures, including Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, Charlie Chaplin and James Cagney. There was a plan to drive through Boyle

Bund and Silver Shirts. Slocombe stopped a second mass murder plot by convincing three of the plotters that the mastermind behind the plan, the British fascist Leopold McLaglan, was about to betray them. Knowing their inner circles had been infiltrated, but not by whom, and unwilling to risk prison, the groups postponed their plans. Permanently. Without ever firing a gun, Lewis and his spies managed to defeat a variety of enemies. Only after Congress declared war on Germany did government authorities finally relieve Lewis – “the most dangerous Jew in Los Angeles,” as Nazis called him

My Sudden Hearing Loss by Pam Moritz
My summer of unexpected challenges and heartfelt kindness.
F
our weeks ago I was in the middle of a conversation when my left ear became a little clogged. I opened my mouth wide, swallowed, pinched my nose and blew out, trying to unclog it. Nothing. “Hmm, that’s strange,” I said to myself. Two weeks of Prednisone, then a week of steroid injections directly into the ear while staying in the hospital, and then a week of home recovery, and there’s been no change, no improvement, no nothing. The doctors are a little baffled. Sudden Hearing Loss is not as uncommon as you might think and they’re not sure of the cause. The steroids are a shot in the dark; only about a third of patients regain hearing from the treatment. So the summer of 2017 has become the summer of my hearing loss. The summer I had to stop working out for threeplus weeks because resting is a major component of the treatment as well. It has

also become the summer I’ve learned some important things. I learned that the people of my community are caring, kind, and giving. Friends and acquaintances didn’t just ask what they could do. They did. My family had food brought to our door; I had books and treats delivered to the hospital; and visitors surprised me morning, noon, and night. I got countless WhatsApp messages, phone calls wishing me well and thoughtful gifts from abroad. One woman – I’ll call her Claire – is a friend who’d gone through this a few years ago but had the good fortune to have her hearing restored. Claire continued to check up on me, came to visit in the hospital (a good 40 minutes from home), and regaled me with crazy stories that had me laughing. She then invited me over for coffee when I got home. I’ve been working on bringing Hashem into my life more, and since all this rest brought me extra time on my hands, I decided to watch some uplifting Torah lectures and rediscovered the joys of
learning Torah. In one of the lectures Paysach Krohn said something that applied to what I was going through and will stay with me for a long time. He spoke about Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who successfully landed his plane on the Hudson River, saving all those on board. Mr. Sullenberger, he explained, had lost his father when he was a young man, and the loss was devastating to him. He’d vowed to himself to try and keep others from that kind of pain. So when it came time to land a plane on the Hudson – a near-impossible feat – the loss of his father kept him focused. Sullenberger was responsible for the lives of 155 people on that plane and couldn’t bear the thought of all those who would mourn for them, as he’d had to mourn for his father. This is what it means, Rabbi Krohn explained, to truly give back. When you’ve gone through a hardship and you reach out to others so that they don’t have to go through the same, or when you help alleviate the pain for those who are going

through the same – that is a deep chesed, a kindness that makes such a difference. I can look at the overwhelming blessings in my life and focus on the good, while dealing with the loss. I thought of my friends and family. They hadn’t gone through the same experience but they certainly know what hardship feels like. They know that being alone can feel scary. With their constant WhatsApp messages, phone calls, visits, and unexpected gifts, I had a support system that reached half-way around the globe. And I thought of Claire. She had gone through the same thing years prior, and remembered. I knew she was in my corner. Today, in fact, I paid it forward just a little. I know what it’s like to work hard and get little thanks. So after my follow-up hearing test at the hospital this morning, I visited the ward where I’d stayed and brought the nurses a bowl of candies. “Thank you for all you did,” I said. It felt so good. The hearing in my left ear hasn’t come back. And the chances that it will are slim, now that so much time has passed without any change. Sudden Hearing Loss is just that – a loss. I mourned for a bit, knowing I might never hear the same way again. But with all that has happened in the last month, I can look at the overwhelming blessings in my life and focus on the good, while dealing with the loss. I’ve decided that the summer of 2017 won’t simply be “the summer of my hearing loss.” I’m determined to remember this time as one of chesed, kindness, and empathy.

Butternut Squash Soup with Ginger Serves 6 Serve this delicious treat as an appetizer or as a snack with crispy croutons. 2 butternut squash, about 4 pounds,, peeled, seeded and sliced 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 cups thinly sliced onion 1 tablespoon golden brown sugar 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped 1/2 cinnamon stick 5 cups water Salt and Pepper to taste Chopped fresh parsley or toasted pine nuts to garnish, optional
Heat oil in heavy large pot over medium-low heat. Add onions, brown sugar, ginger, garlic and cinnamon. Cover pot and cook until onion is tender, about 15 minutes. Add squash and 5 cups water. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer 15-20 minutes or until squash is soft. Discard cinnamon. Working in batches, purĂŠe soup in blender. Return soup to pot. Season soup with salt and pepper. Bring to simmer, thinning soup with more broth if necessary. Ladle into bowls. Sprinkle with parsley or pine nuts and serve. Enjoy!
Potato Carrot Souffle Serves 5 This soufflé is great hot from the oven. The added greens are a great boost of iron for the winter immune system. 7 medium potatoes, shredded ( Do NOT drain!) 2 medium carrots, shredded ¼ cup chopped cilantro or parsley 1 large onion, shredded 4 eggs ¾ cup vegetable or olive oil ¾ Tablespoon salt ¾ teaspoon pepper Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease one 11 x 7 baking pan or two loaf pans. Mix ingredients in large mixing bowl and pour into prepared pans. Bake for one hour or until light to dark brown on top. Spoon onto plates hot or let cool and slice. Enjoy!

Couscous and Vegetables Serves 5 A light middle eastern dish, welcome on any cold afternoon. 3 zucchinis cut in half circles 4 onions sliced 3 Bell peppers, one red, one green and on yellow or orange 1 medium butter nut squash cute into one inch cubes 2 carrots, thinly sliced 8 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced 2 tsp each of ground cumin and turmeric Salt & pepper to taste 1 tsp paprika powder One cup water One 15 oz. can of chick peas drained and rinsed 2 cups instant couscous 1 1/2 teaspoons salt Âź teaspoon black or white pepper Juice of 1 lemon 3 Tablespoons olive oil 2 cups boiling water
Place zucchini, onion, peppers, squash, carrots, garlic, cumin, turmeric, salt, pepper and paprika in a large pot. Add one cup of water and bring to boil. Simmer on low-medium fire about twenty minutes or until all vegetables are soft. Add in chick peas and bring to boil again. Remove from fire. Meanwhile place the couscous in a large bowl that has a tight fitting lid. Add the salt, pepper, lemon juice and olive oil. Mix well till all the couscous is evenly coated in oil. When the vegetables are ready, add two cups of boiling water to the couscous, mix with fork and cover tightly. Let sit for 3 minutes, then fluff with fork and cover again for an additional two minutes. Spoon the couscous onto the center of the plates and ladle the vegetables around the couscous. Enjoy!

2-3 black peppercorns 2/3 cup milk 2 tsp. sugar or to taste 1 teaspoon any loose black tea Put water in saucepan. Add the cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and peppercorns and bring to a boil. Cover, turn heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the milk and sugar and bring to a boil again. Put in the tea leaves, cover, and turn ff the heat. After 2 minutes, strain the tea into two cups and serve immediately.
