The Shmuz on the Parsha
Rabbi Ben Tzion Shafier
A Slave to Fashion Parshas Bo “And the Jewish people did as Moshe instructed them, and they borrowed from the Egyptians silver vessels, gold vessels, and garments.” — Shemos 12:35 HASHEM promised Avraham that his children would be slaves in Mitzrayim (Egypt), yet they would be redeemed and would leave with great wealth. And so, when it was time to leave Mitzrayim, HASHEM told Moshe to tell the Jews to borrow the silver and gold vessels of their Egyptian neighbors. Interestingly, the Torah records that the Jews borrowed the silver vessels, gold vessels, and garments. Rashi explains that that the order is progressive. To the Jews leaving Egypt, even more valuable than the silver and gold were the garments of the Egyptians. Therefore, while they weren’t commanded to ask for the garments, they did this on their own. This Rashi is difficult to understand. These were highly intelligent people. They knew that HASHEM was fulfilling a promise made long ago. They knew they were to leave with great wealth, and they also knew the value of the objects involved. A shirt, a cloak, or whatever

article of clothing is of limited value. With gold and silver vessels, they could buy whole wardrobes of such clothing. How is it possible that the clothing was more valuable to them than gold or silver? The answer to this may be understood with an observation.
Bowties and Bell-bottom Pants
If you look at your parents’ wedding album, you might find yourself wondering, “What were they thinking? The wild colors. The wide lapels. The strange haircuts. Didn’t they realize that people would look at them and laugh?” Of course, the answer is that in those times, that look was “in.” That was the style. It was the way that fashionable men and women dressed. And the more fashionable they were then, the stranger they look now. Whether bell-bottom pants, wide lapels, huge bows on the back of women’s dresses or rollers in their hair, each generation has a specific look that it considers appealing, and the vast majority of people kowtow to the demands of dressing fashionably as dictated by social pressure. It’s later on when the fashions have again changed that we look back and recognize how preposterous that old style was. This seems to be the answer to this Rashi. The people leaving Mitzrayim were born into slavery. They were brought up in a world where the Egyptians were their rulers and masters. The viewed the Mitzrim as a superior class. And so, the clothing that their masters wore was that of the upper crust, something they To advertise, call 718-513-9885
couldn’t even dream of wearing. When the Jews were given the opportunity to take whatever they wanted, the most valuable thing to them was the clothing. Naturally, they understood that the wealth they were taking out could buy them many rooms full of such clothing, but nevertheless, they still desired those garments because in their world, this was coveted.
A Slave Obeys
This concept is very applicable to us. In the 1960’s, Western civilization underwent a cultural revolution. Norms and standards that had been accepted for generations were thrown away. The cry of the day was, “Do you own thing. If it feels good, do it. Throw away your inhibitions.” Established guidelines of conduct crumbled. As a result, propriety, decency, and self-respect became relics of the past. Gone was decency. Gone was chastity. Gone was a sense of propriety and dignity. We now live in the aftermath of that upheaval. Some of the collateral damage is an over fifty percent divorce rate, which makes the concept of children being raised in a stable home a relic of the past. And while as Jews we are somewhat apart from this, we are affected. One of the manifestations is the way that our young people dress.

appearance, bearing, and manner, she is not ordinary or common. She is a princess. And as a princess, she isn’t loud or showy in appearance. Our daughters aren’t showgirls or objects to be ogled. And so, naturally, their clothing, while attractive, should be modest and flattering, as befitting royalty. Yet, when we look at the picture of today’s weddings or bar mitzvahs, it’s not quite what we see. Seductive and suggestive is more like it, calling attention to the figure in a manner that asks that the wearer be viewed not as a person worthy of honor, but as an object of desire. Naturally, this is the way of the times, and it seems to be normal — after all, isn’t everyone dressing that way? The real question is what future generations will say. “Oh, my goodness, look at Bubby! I can’t believe it! Wasn’t she embarrassed to go out in public like that? And Zaidy didn’t say anything? I mean, I hate to say it, but she looks like… I mean… ummmm…” The sad reality is that we have become slaves to the whims and fancies of people who do not share our understanding of the holiness of the individual, nor the greatness of the human. Our “fashion Godss” who sit in Paris and London dictate their edicts upon us. Throw out all of last year’s clothing — that’s passé, unacceptable, no longer in. Pointy shoes? Unforgivable. Wedged toes are the latest thing. Banish thine colored clothing and adorn thyself only in black. Modesty? Please. That’s so old school. Get with the times. And like despots of old, the designers sit in the fashion cathedrals of Sixth Avenue and decree style – and we dutifully follow. But what can we do? How can we educate the next generation? We need to focus on dignity and self-worth. While clothing may not define the person, if you dress like a plumber, people expect you to change pipes. And if you value your dignity and self–worth, you dress appropriately. We are an exalted and holy people. We are expected to be a chosen nation, respected amongst the nations. And as such we aren’t slave to any man, notion or fashion—we serve only one G-d. We need to recognize our role in the world and dress the part.

The Curious Case of Coca-Cola
Mass Hysteria by Dr. Ariel Mintz
Our minds are extremely powerful.
I
n June of 1999, a health scare gripped the world. Several children in a Belgium elementary school began developing severe headaches, nausea, chills, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath. They worsened to the point of requiring emergency transport to hospitals. Within a week the sickness had spread to affect six schools and hundreds of individuals throughout Belgium, France, and neighboring countries. Coca-Cola was identified as the culprit with small amounts of hydrogen sulfide in some bottles being the proposed mechanism of illness. Countries throughout Europe initiated mass recalls and began pulling all products made by Coca-Cola from shelves. The recall was the greatest in the history of Coca-Cola, with 30 million cans disposed of at a cost of greater than one hundred million dollars and countless more losses from negative PR. As toxicologists and scientists began studying this further, they realized there was actually no evidence of any high enough

levels of contaminants to be consistent with the reported symptoms. So what was their explanation for what had caused all these people to fall ill? It was a simple case of mass psychogenic illness or mass hysteria. There have been many similar cases of mass hysteria over the last several centuries. These illnesses are often misidentified until after a pandemic ensues with no biological evidence of an inciting precipitant.
How does this happen?
Mass hysteria typically involves vague abdominal and neurological complaints without physical exam findings and occurs in workplaces or schools where people have close contact with each other. All it takes is one person getting sick. Individuals see their colleague falling ill and then worry about getting sick themselves. This is a normal reaction that happens all the time and aside from a little uneasiness, passes by without causing any further harm. However, anxiety can cause our brain to misinterpret regular

physiological sensations such as a rumbling stomach and to attribute them instead to illness. In the right conditions, this can lead to hyperventilation and induction of further symptoms. Once a few people in a close environment start reporting symptoms it can spread like wildfire. The worse it gets the more likely people are to convince themselves that they too have “caught the bug. The good news is that just as it spreads quickly it also quickly resolves. People typically recover over the course of weeks without residual effects. Treatment involves separating exposed individuals from each other, putting an end to fear-eliciting communications, and if possible explaining to them the psychological nature of their illness. In the case of the Coca-Cola incident, misinterpretation of symptoms was likely exacerbated by the media coverage and the massive recall response. The initial students who fell ill were at a higher risk secondary to the stress of final exams which they had just

What can we take from this story? Our minds are extremely powerful. So powerful in fact, that they can convince us we are deathly ill. But the mind is equally capable of reversing

One way to take back control of your mind is through the practice of mindfulness. This is the act of bringing attention to the present moment and can be easily learned through psychotherapy, apps and Judaism’s daily blessings. Recent studies have shown that 7-10 minutes a day of mindfulness was equally effective as medications in controlling chronic migraine. Further, it can reduce

symptoms of ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome and decreases risk of anxiety, depression and dementia. A frequent opportunity to practice mindfulness is right before eating. Take a moment to appreciate the food you are about to eat, where it came from, and all the effort that went into preparing it. And then make a blessing, thanking the Source of all creation. Making daily blessings with intent can bring about profound results. Another easily achieved mechanism that can rewire our brains to reduce
physical and emotional distress is the act of keeping a daily gratitude journal. People who write down a couple things they are grateful for each day have reduced pain perception, asthma attacks, and improved overall emotional well-being. This does not need to take up a lot of your time. It can be accomplished in just a few minutes each morning by concentrating while praying and giving thanks to Hashem for all the unbelievable miracles He has performed for you and your family. The more specific examples you think of, the better your results. We each have the ability to hone these tools and harness the capacity of our minds to improve our physical and mental health regardless of our circumstances.

Dona Gracia Nasi & the Spanish Inquisition’s Underground Railroad by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller
Gracia Nasi defied the Spanish Inquisition to ferry thousands of Jews to safety.
D
ona Gracia Nasi was a great Jewish hero. For decades she ran an underground railroad for Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition and single-handedly supported Jewish communities in Italy, Turkey and Israel. Praised during her lifetime as “the heart of her people”, Dona Gracia Nasi’s story is hardly remembered today. That should change; her remarkable story deserves to be known. She was born into a secret Jewish family in Portugal in 1510 and given the royal-sounding name of Beatrice de Luna as her legal name – and Gracia Nasi as her secret Jewish name. Gracia’s family were merchants who likely had fled the Spanish Inquisition in 1492. When Jews were expelled from Portugal three years later, many decided to stay, becoming “Conversos” or supposed converts to Christianity in public, but maintaining Jewish lives in private. The Portuguese authorities were more lenient to these secret Jews than their counterparts in Spain, and Gracia’s family were pillars of the secret Jewish community there. In

fact, their hidden last name Nasi, meaning “Prince”, indicates they were long-standing community leaders. While maintaining an outward appearance of being Christian, the family observed Shabbat, avoided non-kosher foods, and studied Jewish texts in secret. At the age of 18, Gracia married Francisco Mendes, another secret Jew, and together they built up a large trading company. They had one daughter whom they gave two names: Brianda as a nonJewish name, and Reyna as a secret name. Reyna means queen in Spanish and might recall the common Jewish name Malka, which means queen in Hebrew. Francisco died in 1536, after eight years of marriage. That same year, the Portuguese authorities began to crack down on secret Jews. They set up a Holy Office of the Inquisition, modeled after Spain’s fearsome religious police. fled, Gracia and her y o u n g daughter included. The pair settled in Antwerp which was more tolerant of Jewish practice and where Gracia had many relatives. She went into business with a brother-in-law, but she longed to move somewhere where she could live completely openly as a Jew. As an upper class businesswoman in Flanders, Gracia knew it would be impossible to run a large business if she openly professed her Jewish faith. Gracia and her brother-in-law discussed moving to the German lands to the south where communities of Jews lived freely. They set a goal of moving within a year. Sadly, Gracia’s brother-in-law died suddenly, making her the sole surviving partner in a large trading company, putting Gracia’s plans to move on hold.
Though she couldn’t live openly as a Jew herself, Gracia used her extensive business contacts to help other Jews escape to cities where they could live Jewish lives. She helped secret Jews escape from Portugal and Spain, and to make the difficulty journey over the Alps into Italy or into the Balkans. It was more difficult to help these Jews escape with some of their property and wealth to help them start their new lives. Gracia’s extensive business contacts hid a network of escape routes throughout Europe. While she traded spices and gems, her business agents also ferried
Jews found employment in Gracia’s warehouses and businesses until they could be dispatched to safety further south to Italy or Turkey. Gracia’s agents instructed the fleeing Jews on which roads to use and in which inns it was safe to stay. They relied on a network of sympathetic allies. In Venice, a non-Jewish printer named Daniel Bomberg, who specialized in printing Hebrew books, received the property of fleeing Jews and returned it to their owners once they’d made it to the relative safety of Italy. Writing in 1946, the British historian Cecil Roth noted that Gracia was the
Even though Jews lived openly in Venice – confined to a dreary island called the Ghetto – Gracia was not able to reveal her Jewishness publicly. To do so would have meant an end to her business dealings. In fact, it appears Gracia was arrested and held in prison briefly in Venice after she was accused of being a secret Jew. She began a clandestine plan to transfer her wealth to Turkey, with an eye to eventually living there. Turkey at the time was welcoming the Jews who’d been forced out of Europe. Sultan Bajazet II famously declared that he couldn’t understand the motives of

secret Jews across borders along with this merchandise. One popular route was for Jews to board Gracia’s ships in Spain and Portugal, bound for England. When the ships docked in Southampton or Plymouth, one of Gracia’s London agents, a man named Christopher Fernandes, was instructed to board the ships and let the hidden Jews know whether it was safe to stay on board for the next leg of the journey, to the Netherlands. Because Jews were banned from England at the time, the journey was a hazardous one. Another of Gracia’s London agents was Antonio de la Ronha, a learned Jew who was related to her. He was tasked with helping Jewish refugees recover property they’d been forced to leave behind. Once in the Netherlands, many secret

“brains behind the whole of this elaborate organization” and that “There is nothing similar in Jewish history, or perhaps in any history, until our own day and the organization of the ‘underground railway’ for saving Jews from the hell of Nazi and post-Nazi Europe and securing their entry…to the Land of Israel.” In Antwerp, Gracia’s vast wealth attracted unwanted attention from kings and princes. Emperor Charles V wanted Gracia’s daughter to marry one of his courtiers and seize the family’s wealth. Gracia said she wished to visit a spa in France and fled with her daughter and as much property as she could carry. From France, she travelled on to Italy, settling in Venice where she re-established her trading business. To advertise, call 718-513-9885
King Ferdinand of Spain, who’d decreed that all Jews leave Spain in 1492. “How can you call this Ferdinand ‘wise’ – he who has impoverished his dominions in order to enrich mine?” the Sultan asked as industrious, educated Jews left Europe for Ottoman lands. Gracia’s life in Venice was precarious. In 1550 Venetian authorities started prosecuting secret Jews and Gracia, along with her sister-in-law, daughter and niece, fled to the Italian town of Ferrara. There, for the first time in her life, she publicly declared her Jewishness, using her name Gracia. She changed her last name to her family’s previous Hebrew surname of Nasi. When her nephew Joao visited Gracia, he adopted the name Nasi too and changed his first name to Samuel.

In Ferrara, Gracia supported local Jewish scholars and paid for the first translation of the Torah into Spanish. This peace and happiness was short-lived. In 1551, plague broke out in Ferrara. City officials blamed Jews and forced Jews to leave the town. Gracia decided the time had come. She set sail for Constantinople, in the heart of the Ottoman Empire. There, she set up a fine household, again living openly and proudly as a Jew. She continued to run her trading empire with their secret routes ferrying Jews to freedom, but for the first time Gracia was able to publicly support Jews and Jewish organizations as well. Each day, 80 poor people entered her grand palace to receive free meals. Gracia paid to redeem Jewish slaves who were seized by pirates. When Turkey experienced a bitterly cold winter in 1567, she paid to help the empire’s poor Jews afford heat and clothes. She supported hospitals, charities, schools and synagogues throughout the Ottoman lands. One of Gracia’s favorite projects was a synagogue and yeshiva she established in the heart of Constantinople, which was known as “the Synagogue of the Senora”. Previously, local tradition dictated that Constantinople’s Jews always prayed in the one synagogue to which their families belonged. Gracia’s synagogue was different: it was open to all Jews, welcoming everyone whether member or not. In 1559, Gracia established a synagogue in Salonika, in Greece, a city in which many secret Jews from Spain were finding refuge. Known as the “Gracia” synagogue, this too was specifically open to all Jews, whether members or not. She also established a kollel, or rabbinic academy, in Salonika, where the city’s rabbis and scholars could take turns studying Jewish texts full time. Perhaps Gracia’s most ambitious project was supporting the Jewish Emperor Charles V community in Israel. She petitioned the Sultan for permission to resettle Spanish Jews in Tiberias, an ancient city in the north of Israel, and he agreed. Gracia backed the venture and built a thriving Jewish settlement there, as well as supporting Jews elsewhere in the region. She had a grand house built for herself in Tiberias and petitioned the Sultan for permission to go to the Holy Land. First, Gracia had a promise to keep. Years before, she’d promised her husband Francisco that she’d do everything in her power to see he was buried in Israel. Now, with great difficulty, she had his body removed from the church graveyard in Lisbon where it was interred and brought to Israel, where he was

She grew sick and withdrew from public life, living in Constantinople in old age in precarious health. She died in about the year 1569, one of the most beloved figures in the entire Jewish world. Tributes were delivered to Gracia the Nasi throughout Europe and the Middle East. One of the most famous was a poem written by the great Jewish poet Sa’adiah Longo, who had fled the Spanish Inquisition as a child and moved to Salonika with his family, where he witnessed Gracia’s generosity and help for her fellow Jews firsthand. In his ode “Dona Gracia of the House of Nasi” he compares Gracia’s passing to some of the major calamities in Jewish history. She “straightened the path in the wilderness...the passage to an awesome Hashem,” he recalled. That passageway that Gracia Nasi prepared allowed unknown thousands of Jews to escape persecution and death at the hands of the Inquisition and build new lives in safety. Her heroism deserves to be better known today.

My Best Slow Cooker Recipes by Elizabeth Kurtz
Super simple solutions to weeknight cooking. Super simple solutions to weeknight cooking is here. Slow cooker or crock pot cooking is easy and quick in preparation and ready when you get home from school or work. I try and present extra simple recipes that require no other pots (with one exception below). Note, slow cooker and crockpot are used interchangeably here. A few slow cooker quick tips:
To thicken liquid or sauce, remove meat or chicken, add a teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a tablespoon of water, keep slow cooker on high and stir, cook an additional 45 minutes and liquid will thicken
Always put warm ingredients into a warm slow cooker and cold ingredients into a cold slow cooker.
No need for fancy slow cooker settings, just low, high and warm

Asian Orange Chicken Serves 4-6
Chopped fresh herbs, parsley, cilantro, and basil tossed with olive oil, optional garnish
A bit like Chinese take-out at home. I also make this with pieces of white and dark meat chicken cubes. Serve over rice. Photo By: Serious Eats 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate, thawed ¼ cup honey 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce 3 pieces ginger, about ¼ inch thick 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon sesame oil 6 boneless, skinless chicken cutlets 2 teaspoons cornstarch 2 teaspoons cold water 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted, optional
24
In a zip-lock bag, combine the orange juice concentrate, honey, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ginger, garlic and sesame oil. Mix well. Place the chicken in the bag and coat it well with the sauce. Pour the chicken and sauce in the crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours. Remove the chicken. Strain the sauce (or just pour it in) into a saucepan. In a small dish, stir the cornstarch and cold water. Pour mixture into the sauce and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until thickened, about 1 – 2 minutes. Pour the sauce over the chicken and serve with rice. Alternatively, to thicken in the crockpot, remove chicken, add a teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with a tablespoon of water, keep slow cooker on high and stir, cook an additional 45 minutes and liquid will thicken

Slow Cooker Savory Short-Ribs with Beer and Herbs Serves 6 Short ribs hold up well to slow cooking. The flavors develop and the meat gets very soft with this method. Rosemary and thyme mixed with beer create tremendous depth of flavor. I use a full-flavored beer like Heineken or Corona but the original recipe calls for a Guinness or Stout, which are a bit stronger in flavor. If you prefer, use red wine for a different flavor but a rich delicious one too. 1 tablespoon canola oil 3 pounds bone-in beef short ribs 2 medium onions, peeled and quartered 2 medium carrots, cut into large chunks 2 medium parsnips, cut into large chunks 2 medium turnips, peeled and cut into large chunks 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 4 sprigs fresh thyme 4 sprigs fresh parsley, stems and leaves separated (leaves used for garnish) 1 tablespoon. Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 (12-ounce) beer or red wine 1 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the oil. Season the short ribs with salt and pepper. When the oil is hot, brown the short ribs, in batches, until they are browned on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. While the short ribs are browning, place a layer of onion and carrot pieces into the bottom of a slow cooker and season them with salt and pepper. Place the browned meat on top. Add the remaining onions and carrots along with the parsnips and turnips. Place rosemary, thyme and parsley in a cheesecloth or a “soup bag” and tie it up and place in the crockpot. Add Worcestershire, Dijon mustard, and brown sugar. Pour beer over everything and add enough water to almost cover the contents. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or until the meat is very tender. To serve, carefully remove the meat and vegetables from the slow cooker. Remove the cheesecloth and discard. Serve the ribs with the juice and garnish with chopped parsley leaves.

Illustrated by Chana Eisenstein In the king’s palace: Since the Jewish doctor arrived, nobody listens to you, the wise advisor.
Don’t worry, I have a plan!
My lord, the king! Reb Moshe ben Maimon is a Jew after all. Why wouldn’t the king appoint an Islamic physician? What should I do? Reb Moshe is a very successful doctor.
I will create a contest to prove who the greater physician is! Each of you should prepare a strong poison. Whichever doctor can cure himself from the other’s poison, will prove to me that he is the better doctor and he will be my personal physician.
I will introduce you to an even greater doctor! And he is a member of our religion!
I find it difficult to dismiss my good doctor. You know what, I have a great idea!
BROUGHT TO YOU BY KIDALINGO MAGAZINE:
Illustrated by Chana Eisenstein The Rambam summons several of his devoted students…
The first flask is the antidote to every type of poison. The second strengthens the body and makes it healthy. When the doctor will poison me, hand me the first flask and then the second. I will be saved, with the help of Hashem. At the contest…
Here you have the strong poison that I have prepared…
Remember! First the first flask and then the second!
You must also prepare the poison for the other doctor.
No! I will give him a glass of simple water flavored with a bit of sweet juice. The poison is working. The Rambam has collapsed.
After several hours the Rambam awakened… healthy and rejuvenated!
I thank Hashem that the medications healed me from the toxic poison.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY KIDALINGO MAGAZINE:
Illustrated by Chana Eisenstein Now it’s your chance. Reb Moshe, give the doctor your poison!
Hurry, drink the poison!
The next day…
Please drink this…
I don’t feel any painful sensations… This must be a very special poison!
What a catastrophe! Why on earth did it enter my mind to take part in this contest?
I know the Rambam is a skilled doctor. The poison probably gets activated when it comes in contact with different foods… I will be sure to drink only cow’s milk, which I myself supervised the milking… That will certainly have the least chance of being harmful…
BROUGHT TO YOU BY KIDALINGO MAGAZINE:
Illustrated by Chana Eisenstein One week passed…
It’s already an entire week that I’m drinking only milk. What will be with me?
Ah, now you’re drinking it…
In the end, your poison did manage to kill the doctor. I’m not too sorry. I’m sure you are the more skilled of the two. I am curious to know what you have put into the poisonous brew that killed him only after a full week went by…
It’s mere water flavored with a bit of juice. It is not harmful at all. I didn’t kill the doctor, he killed himself with his mind. All day long he was consumed with fear about what was in the “devil’s brew” that I concocted. From this we can understand the power of one's thoughts. We must always think positively, that everything will turn out for the best, and that will make us healthy.
To be continued...
