People Believe What They Want to Believe A

“ nd Moshe stretched out his hand over the sea, and HASHEM moved the sea with a strong eastern wind all the night, and He turned the sea to damp land and the water split.” — Shemos 14:21 Egypt, the country that bragged that no slave had ever escaped its land, stood by helplessly as the Chosen Nation triumphantly left. Yet even at this moment, Pharaoh sent spies along to follow them. After three days, his agents reported back that the Jews had veered off course. Pharaoh called out to his people, “Let us reclaim that which is ours,” and he led them in pursuit. When the Mitzrim arrived on the scene, the Jews were camped out against the Yam Suf. At that moment, the cloud of fire that led the Jews through the desert moved to the back of the camp and stopped the Egyptians from advancing. That entire night, both camps stood in their places, separated by the Clouds of Glory. The Ramban explains that during the night, an eastern wind began blowing. This was the wind that split the sea. At first, it made small indentations in the sea, but as the night wore on, the wind became stronger, and those small indentations grew in size and depth until the sea itself was split into twelve distinct pathways – ready for each tribe to cross in its own channel. The Ramban explains that HASHEM split the sea with the wind “so that it would appear as if the wind split the sea into partitions.” Even though the wind can’t possibly split the sea, much less split it into twelve separate partitions, nevertheless,

because of their great desire to harm the Jews, the Mitzrim “pegged it on a natural cause.” It was just the wind, nothing more. This Ramban is very difficult to understand. How could the Mitzrim possibly pin the splitting of the sea on the wind? They were intelligent, thinking people. They, as everyone else, clearly understood that this couldn’t be a natural occurrence. How is it possible that they accepted this sham – that the wind split the sea? Understanding free will The answer to this question is predicated upon understanding the concept of free will. Free will doesn’t mean the theoretical ability to do good or bad. It is the practical ability where either side is possible. When a person can just as easily turn to the bad as to the good, then it is his decision to choose. As an illustration, do you have free will to put your hand in a fire? In theory, you do. You could do it. But you never would. It is damaging. It is foolish. So, while in theory you have free will to do it, on a practical level, you don’t. Creating man Chazal (our sages) tell us that HASHEM created man to give him the opportunity to shape himself into what he would be for eternity. That molding of the person is accomplished by choosing what is good and proper and avoiding that which is wrong and evil. By making these choices, man forms himself. To create an even playing field, HASHEM took the sechel – that pure, brilliant part of me – and inserted it into a body filled with drives, passions, and hungers. Now the two

parts of me are integrated. I don’t want only what is good and proper and noble. I also desire and hunger for many other things. My choice of doing only good is no longer so simple. However, if HASHEM created man only out of these two parts – the sechel and the guf – the purpose of creation would never have been met. The wisdom of man is so great that it would be almost impossible for him to sin. Since every sin damages me and every mitzvah makes me into a bigger, better person, my natural intelligence wouldn’t allow me to sin, no matter how tempted I might be. I would clearly recognize it as damaging to me. Much like putting my hand into a fire, in theory I would have free will to do it, but on a practical level, I wouldn’t. Imagination – its role and function Therefore, HASHEM added one more component to the human: imagination. Imagination is the creative ability to form a mental picture and sense it so vividly, so graphically; it is as if it is real. Ask anyone who has ever cried while reading a novel whether imagination isn’t a powerful force. Now armed with this force, man can create fanciful worlds at his will and actually believe them. If man wishes to turn to evil, he can create rationales to make these ways sound noble and proper – at least enough to fool himself. If he wishes he can do what is right, or if he wishes, he can turn to wickedness, and even his brilliant intellect won’t prevent him. With imagination, he is capable of creating entire philosophies to explain how the behavior he desires is righteous, correct, and appropriate. Now man has free will.

People believe what they want to believe The result of this is that people don’t believe that which is factual, proven and true; they believe what they want to believe. And, one of the greatest manifestations of this is the Egyptians following the Jews to their death. Despite living through the makkos, despite seeing the sea split into twelve sections, they didn’t believe it was a miracle. They attributed it to the wind because that is what they wanted to believe. We see a parallel to this in our day, when educated people claim that the world just evolved. No Creator. No Plan. No purpose. All of the complexity of this vast world just happened. You might wonder how anyone could be so blind. The answer is quite simple—I don’t want to accept G-d. If G-d exists then someone is in charge. If G-d exists then there are rules. Things I have to do, things I can’t do. That makes me uncomfortable. I am just much more at ease with denying the whole thing. For a person to see the truth, he must put away his bias and ask himself what do I honestly think? Forget the consequences. Forget my agenda. What does logic dictate? In that framework, a person will see the Creator as clear as day. However, if he doesn’t want to see the truth, nothing in the world will convince him, not the greatest miracles, and not even the splitting of the sea itself. He is capable of believing exactly what he wants to believe.

himon E., a 16-year-old Israeli Shotokan karate champion, was in Philadelphia with eleven other Israeli boys for his first international competition. He had trained long and hard, but eying his opponents, especially the Japanese contingent, he felt daunted. The Japanese contenders seemed to have karate in their blood. What did he have in his blood? Suddenly it hit him: He had not seen any of the contenders pray. Although Shimon was not religious, he intuited that he should ask Hashem for help. At the beginning of each match, he prayed for Divine assistance. Shimon scored victory after victory; by the end of the tournament, he was #1 in his division in Israel and #2 in the world. As Shimon described it years later,

his prayer was not a magic formula to strengthen himself or disable his opponent. Rather, it simply expressed his recognition that Hashem is the ultimate causal factor. Of course, had he not trained hard, his victory would have been impossible. But watching many sports competitions had shown him that human effort even augmented by tremendous talent did not always spell success. He concluded that unlikely victories as well as startling defeats are determined by the Divine. Many years ago, my husband and I invested most of our savings in a mutual fund called Tiger. Tiger was run by Julian Robertson, who was rated one of the smartest and sharpest fund managers in the world. Robertson’s genius quickly proved itself. In a short time, our investment tripled. Then, literally overnight, Tiger plunged. It had something to do with the Japanese selling off yen. I never understood the intricate economics of it, but suddenly all our gains had vanished. Robertson wrote a letter to his investors explaining how this unforeseen debacle of a single day could not have been anticipated even by his expertise, and how he planned to restore Tiger to its former glory. The final bombastic sentence of the letter made me cringe. Robertson assured his investors not to worry, because “This Tiger will roar again.” It didn’t. Within several months the fund was defunct. Robertson didn’t realize what 16-yearold Shimon knew: that Hashem is the ultimate causal factor. Although human effort is essential, no matter how smart

we are or how hard we work, victory and defeat, gain and loss, success and failure are ultimately determined by God.

Crying Out Our ancestors in Egypt took a long time to grasp this crucial point. During 116 years of slavery and 80 years of sadistic oppression, it did not occur to them to appeal to God. Assimilated into the majority culture, our ancestors worshipped the idols of that time and place. They descended almost to the lowest level of spiritual impurity, forgetting the one Supreme Power taught by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Instead, they looked for their salvation to political changes, such as the advent of a new, more compassionate Pharaoh. Only when Pharaoh died and his successor continued his oppressive policies did our ancestors despair of any amelioration of their condition through natural means. Only at that point, the Torah testifies, did they “cry out” to God. The next verse tells us that God immediately initiated the process of the Redemption. The “crying out” that catalyzed the Exodus from Egypt was not what we would call prayer. They pronounced no words, no lengthy supplications, no eloquent appeals for Divine mercy. Rather, their crying out was a simple, inarticulate turning to God as the only source of salvation. Yet that basic recognition jump-started all the miracles of the Exodus.

What the Gas Attendant Knew The Twelve-Step Program is the world’s most successful treatment for serious addictions and compulsions. I once accompanied an alcoholic friend to an AA meeting in Boston. The first speaker to address the large group introduced himself as Tom, a recovering alcoholic. He was dressed like a gas station attendant. “Every morning,” Tom declared, “I get on my knees and beg God to get me through another day without alcohol.” At that point, he had been dry for 22 years. The first two steps of the Twelve-Step

Program are: 1) To admit that you are powerless (over alcohol or overeating or internet addiction or whatever) and 2) to believe in a Higher Power who can liberate you. The next ten steps lay out an arduous program of “fearless moral inventory,” admitting wrong-doing, making amends, etc. The Twelve-Step Program requires tremendous commitment and effort, but it starts with the simple, adamant recognition that Hashem, and only Hashem, is in ultimate control. I wish that Julian Robertson had known what Tom knew.

psychological and emotional bondages — you have to work hard. Along with (not instead of) that effort, you have to know that Hashem runs the world. Passover is the holiday of the Divine give-away. To receive the gift of atonement on Yom Kippur and the ensuing joy on Sukkot, we have to do the arduous inner work of repenting for and rectifying our bad behavior. To receive the gift of the Torah on Shavuot, we have to “count the Omer,” working our way up through the 49 levels of spiritual refinement. The gift of inner freedom on Passover, however, is a freebie. On Seder night, Hashem bestows on all Jews the possibility of redemption from whatever inner bondage holds them. It’s like winning the lottery. Of course, to win the lottery you have to exert yourself to the extent of going to a lottery booth and buying a ticket, looking up the winning number, and showing up to claim your prize. To become worthy of the Exodus from Egypt, our ancestors had to exert themselves to the extent of slaughtering the Passover Offering and smearing its blood on their doorposts. Today, to become worthy of the liberation afforded by Passover, you have to exert yourself to the extent of attending a Seder, eating the requisite amount of matzah, drinking the four cups of wine, and carefully fulfilling the other mitzvahs of the Seder. To claim your Passover gift of inner freedom, two other steps are necessary: Decide before the Seder, “What am I enslaved to?” The possible answers are many: anger, peer approval, materialism, jealousy, self-destructive habits, fear of commitment, impulsivity, resentment, laziness, desire to control, dishonesty, a critical nature as demanding as any taskmaster, etc. Then, during the Seder, as you eat your matzah in silence, commit to striving to accomplish that change and appeal to Hashem to free you from that particular bondage. This does not preclude working hard every day to overcome that bondage. But achieving true freedom requires admitting that what really catalyzes the process of inner liberation is the recognition that Hashem, and only Hashem, is the source of that liberation —and of everything else. Faith guides this director’s workday. Fascinated by animals as a toddler, Jeremy Goodman was certain he wanted to run a zoo even before starting school. By sixth grade at his New Jersey yeshiva, he delved deeply into the Torah’s passages related to animals and tried to reconcile commentaries from both biblical and biological perspectives. The sacred texts he studied throughout his schooling now guide Goodman in his duties as executive director of the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, R.I. An observant Jew, he says it opens a “tremendous opportunity” to fulfill his day-to-day job functions in ways that sanctify Hashem’s name with honorable conduct – a directive in Judaism called Kiddush Hashem.

“How we act every day at work, the way we talk to each other,” he explains, can “elevate” our contributions to become sources of inspiration rippling through our workplaces. Goodman’s professional outlook predates the recent surge of caustic behavior in both social and business settings that is drawing heightened scrutiny. The nexus between his worship and work has been at the core of a twodecade career in animal welfare that includes crisis management in a natural disaster. He was recognized for transforming the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, N.J., into a sanctuary for victims of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 while also safeguarding the wildlife in his care as the zoo’s director. shelter adjacent to the zoo lost power, he offered refuge for weeks to displaced people who slept on cots in the reptile house and used the zoo’s showers. He and his staff also distracted children with the animals. “If you look at it through the lens of spirituality, it’s more meaningful,” Goodman, 48, reflects. “It helps me personally do a better job and make sense of everything.” He adds that the logic he learned studying Talmud is one of his two most valuable skillsets on the job. The Roger Williams Park Zoo, which he has led for six years, is considered the third oldest in the U.S. with its opening in 1872 and is situated on land donated to the city by Betsey Williams in memory of her great-great-great-grandfather, Roger Williams. A pioneer of religious liberty, Roger Williams helped found Rhode Island as a haven for people persecuted for their religious beliefs. His ideals were incorporated into Rhode Island’s Royal Charter of 1663, marking a defining moment in the development of human rights in the modern world. Today Goodman oversees the zoo’s 346 animals, a staff of 120 and more than 200 seasonal workers with an annual budget of $11.5 million. He launched his career as a Tufts-trained veterinarian but ultimately opted for zoo work because of its vast transformative power, both through broad public education and the opportunity to join international efforts in saving species on the brink of extinction.

The Providence zoo, for instance, has helped a Chilean researcher develop a transmitter harness that would identify more precisely the migration patterns of vulnerable wild flamingos to protect their

breeding grounds. A dozen Chilean flamingos in the zoo’s newly opened rainforest participate in a cooperative breeding effort spearheaded by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s species survival program. They are among the exhibit’s four-dozen intermingling species: exotic creatures such as macaws, curassows and endangered giant Brazilian otters that connect visitors to the breathtaking diversity of “Hashem’s world,” Goodman told me during a recent tour, and continue to astound him. “Seeing jaws drop and eye pop open is the most amazing thing,” he said, noting a blessing Jews recite at the sight of unusual-looking creatures to thank the Almighty for those gifts. “When you look at them as really unique creatures that were created for a reason – I have no idea exactly why they were created in the first place – but if it was important enough

for Hashem to create, obviously there’s something of value there that is worth preserving.” I asked how specifically this view informs his work at the Providence zoo. This code of conduct is linked to several verses in the Torah, most notably Exodus 23:5, the mandate to help even one’s enemy load and unload animals but prioritizes unloading due to the distressed state of the animal under its burden. While all zoo employees want what’s best for the animals and “fulfill that mission 100 percent without necessarily viewing Hashem in it at all,” he says his religious requirements add yet another layer of personal responsibility. Both physical and psychological considerations are weighed daily, he said. The zoo, for example, must move a red river hog to a zoological preserve to make room for another with better breeding potential. Concerned for the remaining female’s possible emotional anguish over suddenly being alone, Goodman scheduled the departure so she is companionless for the shortest possible time. The biblical imperative to not take the mother bird together with her eggs, a commandment in Deuteronomy 22:6 meant to inculcate compassion, provides a similar blueprint for his work. When eggs must be candled during the breeding process, Goodman relocates the mother temporarily. He explains, “It is a little

stressful for the mother to see someone messing with the nest.” Fulfilling the holy obligation to relieve animal suffering has occasioned some unconventional measures. While Goodman headed the Turtle Back Zoo, its supervisor banged on the door

of his synagogue during Rosh Hashanah services. He was holding a medical bag and an African black-footed penguin in the throes of a grand-mal seizure. Goodman treated the bird on a neighboring lawn. He has developed a protocol with his rabbis regarding the parameters for assisting animals on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays, days involving restrictions on work and travel. Adherence can entail personal hardship, as one episode involving an escaped red panda illustrates. After tracking it through 2 miles of a reservation bordering the Turtle Back Zoo and eventually securing its safety, he walked home another 8 miles in the snow to avoid driving after sundown Friday, the start of the Jewish Sabbath. With a value system governed by “seeing Hashem in everything,” Goodman says he also takes to heart his responsibility for employees’ wellbeing and cites various biblical passages related to compensation and safety to outline his accountability. When his operations manager notified him of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s latest regulations requiring particular barriers around the perimeter of the new rainforest’s flat roof, Goodman told him that building code has a higher Authority: the biblical requirement in Deuteronomy 22:8 to construct a parapet to guard against mishaps. He asked to have a tiny hand in the work so he could recite the Jewish blessing associated with this precept. “It’s nice that OSHA wants it,” he said, “but Hashem wants it also.” REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM AISH.COM

Here are some original ideas to enhance your Yom Tov meals. IMPORTANT NOTE Make sure all ingredients used are Kosher certified for Pesach. Get inspired by spiralizing Have you heard of zoodles? They’re all the rage these days! Zoodles are zucchini “noodles,” which are made by using a spiralizer (a cool tool for slicing vegetables). They’re a terrific low-carb, diet-friendly choice for a side dish or a meal. Many vegetables lend themselves for spiralizing, used instead of noodles it will increase your health and nutrition in more ways than one. Add some variety to your menu with these innovative ideas. 44

To be able to create a variety of vegetable noodles you need a good spiralizer, they are available in better houseware stores. There are some with various sizes blades, some that attach to your mixer or hand cranking ones. I actually tried one from the dollar store and was not happy with the results. It was not very user friendly. Don’t have a spiralizer? If you haven’t yet invested in a spiralizer, don’t worry. You can use a mandolin, to achieve julienne veggies or a plain old vegetable peeler (you’ll get ribbons rather than spaghetti). If you have a lot of time on your hands, you can even recreate the same effect by slicing the vegetables thinly with a sharp knife. Here are some simple recipes to whet your appetite. Challenge yourself to experiment with more vegetables and assorted combinations.

Beets, Carrots and Walnut dressing This salad is actually very simple with only two key ingredients but it’s the dressing that brings it to life. The sweetness of carrot and beetroot is elevated by the earthy walnuts and citrus in the dressing. White radish rounds give this dish its final appeal. Ingredients For the salad 4 medium raw beets (I used pink and red) 2 medium carrot 1 medium red onion cut in slices. Sliced white radish For the dressing ½ cup toasted chopped walnuts or any other nut such as almonds, filberts, macadamia nuts ¼ cup olive oil 2 Tbs lemon juice

1 small garlic clove, finely diced or grated (if using) ½ tsp raw honey ¼ tsp sea salt Pinch of pepper Instructions Peel and slice beetroots and carrots very thinly with a peeler or use a spiralizer to make noodle strips Place dressing ingredients in a food processor, blender or a mortar and pestle and grind until fairly smooth. It’s ok to have a few crunchy bits in there. Toss beetroot and carrot noodles with 2-3 tablespoons of the dressing (more if you like) and top with sliced radish slices. Preparation 15 minutes Serves 4-6

{Raw} Beet and Sweet Potato Beets and sweet potato combine well in a crunchy and tasty salad. They can be marinated for a delicious flavor or they can be stir fried for 5 minutes for a softer texture. If you appreciate salads you will like this one. Ingredients: 2 large sweet potatoes 1 bunch beets (3-4) 4 scallions 1/2 cup toasted sliced almonds Garlic Lime Vinaigrette Directions: Peel the sweet potatoes and beets. Then use a spiralizer to cut the veggies into long curly strips. Use a pair of kitchen shears to cut the pieces into manageable lengths. Mix the beet and sweet potato ribbons together in a large bowl. Then cut the scallion tops on an angle to make long rings. Sprinkle the salad with scallions and toasted sliced almonds. Toss with your favorite Pesach dressing. Make a vinaigrette with lemon juice, oil, a dash of salt and sugar to taste. PREP TIME: 10 minutes Serves 4-6

SPIRALIZED SPICY SWEET POTATO “FRIES” These sweet potato fries can be baked in a hot oven or fried in a large pot of oil. They are delicious as a side dish or served over salad or mashed potatoes. Ingredients 1 sweet potato, peeled, 1 Tbs extra virgin olive oil Salt, to taste 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp garlic powder *If you don’t have the spiralizer, use the smallest noodle blade on your version or a peeler to cut long

strips. Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spread the noodles out on a large baking tray and drizzle with the olive oil. Toss the noodles together gently with your fingers, coating the noodles in the oil. Season with salt, paprika and garlic powder. Roast for 20 minutes, tossing halfway through (gently be careful not to break the tender noodles!) After 15 minutes, make sure to check the noodles to prevent burning. If starting to burn, toss those pieces gently. Serve, discarding any completely burnt pieces.
