Who Really Owns YOUR Credit Card Miles & Points? Part 2 BY getpeyd.com

How the IRS views Miles & Points earned from purchasing and flying. Posted on December 31, 2014 One of the most commonly asked questions directed to PEYD is whether customers have to report to the IRS the monies earned through cashing-out miles and points or report the value obtained when using miles and points for flights or other redemption options like hotel stays, car rentals or gift cards. This issue is highlighted by the fact that the federal government has yet to regulate the rewards industry and determine the taxable status and overall value of credit card rewards and airline miles. In 2002, the IRS issued a statement indicating that business professionals would not be held liable for the receipt and personal use of frequent flyer miles or other in-kind promotional benefits obtained by the taxpayer’s from business or official travel. For the past ten years, this announcement (although stated specifically in regards to miles and points earned through one’s business and not personal miles earned) was the most meaningful directive on the taxability of frequent flyer mile awards, but for the past ten plus there wasn’t any additional clarity on the status of miles and points, and instead merely indicated the IRS did not plan requiring taxpayers to disclose them on their returns.

The IRS doesn’t require taxpayers to disclose items that are relatively modest in value, and looks to the Federal Government to classify and regulate items that are subjective estimates of value, something the rewards industry certainly falls within. And in fact, the subjectivity and the constant devaluation of miles and points by airlines is actually something currently being investigated by the Department of Transportation. More recently, the IRS issued additional guidelines classifying the taxable status of miles and points which they broke down into two different components a) how an individual obtained their miles and points and b) what the individual does with them. In this article we will focus on the first category. In 2012, the IRS clarified their position and stated that when the rewards are dependent on some kind of financial action whether it’s meeting a certain spending threshold or even where the rewards are given out after the one purchase, the IRS views the rewards as a discount on whatever it is you purchased initially. They therefore do not consider it as additional monies earned that need to be reported. However, if no transaction is required to earn to the rewards the IRS states the rewards earned most be disclosed and are subject to tax. What’s important to note is that even in the case where the rewards are given without any transaction required,

MAGAZINE

they only need to be reported if they are valued above $600, which is the IRS’s mandatory reporting threshold on taxable income. An interesting point to note; the above recently came into focus when CitiBank issued a 1099 to ‘Thank You’ customers who received bonus miles when they opened a new Citi Bank account, and customers who were in an uproar and raised the issue to CitiBank were informed by the IRS that Citibank was correct in sending out the 1099 for giving away miles as a sign-up bonus. The IRS is clear that any future regulations will have no impact on past miles and points earned stating that any future guidance on the taxability of these benefits will be applied prospectively. Stay tuned for our next article, and please consult your tax advisor with any questions, as neither PEYD, its affiliates, nor their employees provide tax advice.

An open letter to the family of an upcoming simcha:

Most of your friends are missing important pictures!

My name is David Friedman from Friedman’s Photography. I know that the fact above sounds shocking, but after speaking to thousands of people who have had pictures made at their simchas and seeing samples of thousands of simcha photos, I have seen that most simchas miss important pictures. We all know that missing pictures can wreak havoc in Shulem Bayis and ruin the relationship with family members of whom important pictures weren’t taken and hope that it does not happen to us. After doing extensive research to find out why such important pictures were missing in such a large percentage of weddings I have found that the main reason was that: Nobody took the time to find out what pictures were important to you until after the simcha when it was already too late, and just like everything in life no picture can be taken for granted if it was not discussed. Friedman’s Photography, which is the studio I founded Bezras Hashem, has been around doing quality photography since 1988. We have the expertise and knowledge which has been built up by serving the community for close to 30 years, and with this background I personally guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at your simcha. We have used our experience to put together a formula to make sure that every person that hires us will receive 100% full coverage of all their dream pictures at any simcha and to offer our 100% Full coverage guarantee.

100% Full coverage guarantee We guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at the simcha

How does it work? After you book Friedman’s photography for your simcha you will need to schedule our unique “Discuss Your Dreams” pre simcha consultation. We recommend that anyone you want to satisfy with pictures of your simcha should be at the consultation including: Chosen, Kallah, both sets of parents, or bar mitzvah boy & any sibling, grandparent, aunt etc. that you would want to satisfy with the pictures. At the “Discuss Your Dreams” consultation, you will meet with a photography expert- an expert in what is available in photography- where the photography expert will explain to you what is available based on the plan you chose and what is the most popular while listening to you with the goal of helping you to clarify your dreams, needs, and wants. The photography expert will help you clearly state what you want and that will save you a lot of headaches trying to figure it on your own. You will also be spared the aggravation of not getting the pictures that were important to you when the simcha is over.

At the simcha! All your dream photographs will be taken iy”h.

Call right away 718-43-PHOTO (718-437-4686) to book your simcha photography with full coverage. Thank You for your time,

The Power of the Pencil

A lesson in how to positively influence children. Last week I experienced the work of a genius educator. When I arrived home from work, my tenyear-old daughter excitedly brought me her report card for the first half of the school year. The grades were basically all perfect except for the category called “organization” – how well the student does in bringing the appropriate books to class and keeping her homework and notes organized. In that category, my daughter received an A- (shocking, but true). But there was something different about the minus sign. “Look abba, my teacher wrote the minus in pencil. She told me that she knows that really I can be much neater and that if I improve over the next half of the year she’ll erase the minus.” I was floored by the teacher’s clever motivation technique. When trying to motivate our children or students we often use external means. We tell them that if they improve we’ll take them out to eat or buy them a toy that they’ve been begging us for. That method often works, but there is a much more basic, effective way

to energize and motivate others to change – show them that you believe that their essence is greater. Give them the confidence in their own potential to perform better. Instead of my daughter feeling badly or down for being disorganized, she was excited about the opportunity to show her teacher her “real” self. She called her grandparents to tell them about it. She was empowered, in a positive way, to grow and change. When a parent or teacher relates to the child in this way, he or she strengthens the trust that forms the foundation of their relationship, allowing the child to feel safe enough to open up and reveal his feelings or past experiences so that the one influencing him can give proper advice and direction. Giving a child the recognition of his inner greatness enables him to overcome challenges and gives him the confidence to strive to reach his potential. He knows he has what it takes. Lastly, one cannot properly influence and change another person if

46 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

he does not believe in the person. Since he doesn’t really think that the person can change, he won’t be precise with his advice and won’t bother investing his fullest in trying to help the person. He won’t be able to relay the message with the same enthusiasm and passion or be willing to follow up with the person after their discussion. In The Song of Songs, God tells the Jewish people “You are completely beautiful, my beloved, there is no blemish in you” (4:7). Rabbi Moshe Cordovero, in his kabbalistic work Tomer Devora (1:6) writes that although the Jewish People makes mistakes, God doesn’t view those mistakes as part of our essence; they are superficial. God writes any minus with a pencil, showing us that He believes in our ability to do better and giving us the opportunity to erase it. In any type of relationship, writes Rabbi Cordevero, we should act Godlike and view others as innately pure. By doing so, we can elevate others towards reaching their ultimate potential. It’s as easy as using a pencil instead of a pen.

What I Wish I Knew Before I Became a Mother I stared at her beautiful face and held her tiny hand and thought: I have no idea what I’m doing. by Sara Debbie Gutfreund

T

he afternoon that I held my Ivy League diploma in my hands, I looked up at the cloudless sky

and felt ready to take on the world. Every door seemed to be open in front of me. I had learned how to beat the curve in organic chemistry. I had learned how to stay up for nights on end absorbing hundreds of pages of knowledge. I had learned how to write lengthy term papers in record time. I had learned so much, but I knew so little. Because even though my education paved the way to graduate school and to my first job, it left me fairly clueless about life itself. The morning that I held my firstborn child in my arms, I looked out the hospital window into the cloudless sky and felt totally overwhelmed. Nothing could have prepared me for this seemingly insane responsibility of having a newborn baby completely dependent upon me. I stared at her beautiful, angelic face with her huge, blue eyes that seemed to look back in wonder into my own. I held her miniature hand and thought: I have no idea what I’m doing. I had learned to achieve but not to nurture. I had learned to be fast but not to be still. I had learned how to speak but not how to listen. I knew how to be efficient but not how to be patient. I knew how to meet deadlines but not how to be interrupted. I had learned how to be the center of attention but not to be attentive. My life, up until that point, had no room for mistakes. No time for connection. No space for being. And I wish someone would have told me before I became a mother that no course, no advice, no wisdom could have prepared me for that moment. That moment when my heart was suddenly no longer hidden within me but instead embedded within this vulnerable, tiny being in my arms. A being that would go out into the world bringing my heart with her. I wish someone would have told me just how frightening that would be. And I wish someone would have told me that nothing would prepare me for the exhaustion of those first few

months. That pulling all-nighters for work is not the same as feeding and soothing a newborn baby every two hours. And that nothing could come close to that kind of peace and closeness I would feel holding my baby in the middle of the night. I wish someone would have told me that even though I had never been a worrier before, I would become one. I would worry about that first cough, whether she was eating enough, sleeping enough, not sleeping enough, growing too slowly, growing too fast. And the worrying would change as she grew, but that it would never go away. I wish someone would have told me that I would need endless patience, not only for my children but for the myriad details that would go into caring for them. And I wish someone would have told me that holding a child is like holding a whole world. That listening to a child is like giving her a diamond for her soul. And I wish I would have known that time would seem to crawl by in those first few years but would really be flying right out of my arms. That I wouldn’t be able to get back that first smile, that first word, that first step. That I would one day regret the moments that I was distracted, that I was impatient, that I wasn’t fully present in my child’s life. That I would be astounded by the way my child became her own person with a life suddenly separate from my own. And how that would make me both deeply happy and achingly sad at the same time. Before I became a mother I had learned so much but knew so little. I didn’t know that holding a child is like having the whole world suddenly cradled in your arms. I didn’t know that you can only walk through one door at a time. I didn’t know that the day I became a mother, I would then begin to build. I would then begin to love. I would then begin to truly learn.

If you think going to the gym is a guilty pleasure, read this article. Balancing marriage, parenting, work, and life responsibilities can feel like a high-wire act. Our children need us, our spouses expect us to be there for them, and then there are parents, jobs, financial pressures and daily obligations pulling at us all at the same time. This does not even begin to address our desire to take care of ourselves. Carving personal time out for a gym class or quiet cappuccino in a coffee shop seems as if we are seeking guilty pleasures. Some nights we lie awake thinking to ourselves that nobody in this family is happy because each person believes I am there more for the others – and this includes ourselves. Here are five strategies for successfully juggling our relationships and commitments:

lives. Family and friends become the most convenient targets. As we push loved ones away, a cycle begins where we start to feel isolated and alone. Our relationships suffer. Those closest to us who can help us find calm in the storm grow distant. Instead of getting angry at our partners, set aside time to speak together in a calm moment. Concentrate on your tone and body language. Be careful not to speak impatiently or seem standoffish. Say, “I feel like I’m in a pressure cooker right now. I realize that I may seem snappy and moody. I am feeling overwhelmed. And while it’s not an excuse, it is something that is making me act out. I am in a bad spot and now I want to work on solutions.” Show that you are recognizing the problem instead of living as if this is your normal.

1. Take Care of Yourself In case of an emergency on a plane you must first place the oxygen mask over yourself and only then can you begin to take care of your children. If you are not breathing you are of no help to anyone else. If you feel as if you are choking, your family will feel it. Begin by taking care of yourself. Be committed to your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. Make a plan and set real goals. Stop overlooking yourself. This is not selfish and self-centered; it is not a guilty pleasure. Look at it instead as giving your family the greatest gift possible: The gift of a joyful ‘you’.

3. Anticipate and Plan Often our feelings of being overwhelmed come from being stuck in the same difficult situation time and time again. The kids are coming home from school all at the same time, mornings are out of control, your spouse is having a hard time in the office and walks through the door in a grumpy mood. And these challenges occur each and every day. The real surprise is why are you once again caught unaware? If you can anticipate that the mornings will be stressful, you can tell yourself that you know what’s coming. Understanding that your stressed partner needs time to unwind before interacting with you prevents you from getting bent out of shape each night. You will feel prepared instead of off-kilter. Anticipation also helps you find solutions. You can work

2. Acknowledge the Challenge When we feel pressured we snap at the people in our

on a doable plan instead of throwing up your hands and feeling as if this is just not possible. If you envision that nighttime is chaotic and the house will be noisy when you return home after a hard day, you are less likely to lose it because you know what to expect the moment you walk through the door. And you can be realistic and set practical ways to find evening balance instead of exploding. 4. Find Your Positive Energy Some of us live life in the positive lane while others only hear negative voices. The choice is yours. When we ‘awfulize’ our situation, nothing seems good. We easily fall into an overwhelming feeling of discontent. Our minds fill with the worst case scenario. Even the smallest difficulties loom large and we don’t think we will manage. Here are some negative self-talks to try and stay away from: “My life is crazy.” “Nothing ever goes right for me.” “I’ll never be able to fix this mess.” “I hate my life.” When you have a cd playing in your head that makes you feel as if you are living a miserable life, you lose the positive force that lies within. Solutions become difficult to come by. Life seems dark. Joy is a distant dream that remains unattainable. The happiest people I know are the most positive. But living with a positive eye takes work. When you begin to find yourself traveling in the negative lane be conscious of what is happening. Counter the negative thought with a more confident one. 5. List Your Priorities and Goals We spend too much time busying ourselves with meaningless activities that strip us of a sense of balance in our day. Surfing the net, checking Instagram, playing candy crush, senseless texting are all ways we find ourselves wasting hours. We don’t begin to realize how precious our time in this world is. We take opportunities with family for granted. Instead of interacting with loved ones, we forget how to cherish the simplest moments. Of course we feel unbalanced. There is too much emotional clutter clouding our lives. It is time to get organized and rid ourselves of the mindless acts that prevent us from living each day to the max. Begin by thinking about your priorities. List your most important goals. How much time do you spend that reflects your values? And how much time is wasted; making you feel as if you don’t have enough hours in the day? Seeking balance while working on solutions will help us live with a positive spirit, feeling energized and better able to handle life’s challenges.

Light meals to welcome the spring season. by Gitta Bixenspanner

g n i r p S enu M

Spring is in the air. Days are longer, sunnier and warmer. It is time to pack away our winter paraphernalia especially in the Northern Hemisphere. That warrants a lighter menu to help us shed the unwanted winter pounds. Gardens are starting to bud, and looking around the supermarket, we will notice many green produce that auger in the spring season. You will find dandelions, burdock, beets, and arugula, as well as white and red radish with their leaves, along with spinach, endives and many others. These greens are beneficial for us and they taste delicious in salads. Some also lend themselves to light cooking.

Mixed Greens Spring Salad 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper

Ideally the fresh mixed spring greens should be used, but feel free to use an assortment of some more common greens, such as romaine or radicchio, endive or butter crunch.

Preparation: Ingredients 8 cups (2 L) mixed greens 1 cup (250 mL) thinly sliced radishes, cucumber and button mushrooms Poppy Seed Dressing: 4 Tbs light mayonnaise 1 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 Tbs lemon juice or apple cider vinegar 1/2 tsp poppy seeds

Poppy Seed Dressing: In large bowl, whisk mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, poppy seeds, salt and pepper. (Makeahead: Transfer to airtight container; refrigerate for up to 1 week.) Add mixed greens and vegetables; toss to coat. Preparation 30 minutes Serves 4 -6

Roasted Red Pepper and Hummus Wraps Roasted red peppers and hummus make a lovely combination. To roast red peppers, choose 4 firm nice red peppers. Seed and wash them thoroughly and cut them in half. Place them in a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes until charred. Remove from oven and cover tightly for 10 minutes with a dishtowel or silver foil. Open up the wrapping and you will find that peppers will peel easily. Cut peppers into thin strips and mix with 1 cup prepared hummus. Ingredients 8 leaves of your favorite green leaves 4 large whole wheat wraps 1 cup (250 gr.) roasted red pepper Hummus 1/2 cup (125 gr.) grated carrots 1/2 cup (125 gr.) thinly sliced cucumbers 1/2 cup (125 gr.) variety of sprouts (optional) Preparation: Place 2 lettuce leaves on each wrap. Spread hummus evenly over each. Sprinkle with carrots, cucumber, and sprouts (if using). Tuck sides over filling; roll up from end. Cut each diagonally in half. Wrap in silver foil. Feel free to make more wraps and fill them with tuna or eggs salad (instead of Hummus) over greens. Send extra wraps for lunch the next day, your children will thank you.

Warm Chicken Salad with Pine Nuts Combining lettuce greens with the protein (chicken) transforms this salad into a favorite, with the best of the vegetable and protein worlds.

1 Tbs pine nuts, toasted 2 Tbs chopped fresh parsley, preferably flat-leaved Instructions

Boil the poaching liquid until slightly reduced, about 5 minutes. Strain, discard garlic and bay leaf and pour 1/2 cup poaching liquid into a small bowl. Whisk in oil, shallots and pepper.
