Jonathan Pollard & America Pollard should have been released years ago because discrimination and unfairness are anti-American ideas. by David Suissa America is far from being an antiSemitic country. In fact, it might be the first country in Jewish history where it’s actually “cool” to be Jewish. That’s one reason I’ve been so reluctant over the years to weigh in on the Jonathan Pollard affair – I’m so in love with this country and all it’s done for the Jews that the last thing I want is to appear ungrateful or, worse, disloyal. Having said that, however, after a while it gets harder and harder to ignore what looks like blatant discrimination against a Jewish man who in 1987 pleaded guilty to spying for Israel. How else to explain the U.S. government’s harsh treatment of Pollard? Of the millions of things that have been said about this case, one fact, for me, stands out the most: The government reneged on the deal it made with Pollard.

This point was flagrantly absent in a recent New York Times op-ed written by M.E. Bowman, a U.S. official directly involved in the Pollard case who continues to defend Pollard’s life sentence. As Alan Dershowitz responded on the Times’ Web site, “M.E. Bowman fails to tell his readers that when Mr. Pollard entered into his plea bargain, the United States government solemnly represented to the court that a sentence of less than life imprisonment would satisfy the needs of justice.” Nothing Bowman writes in his editorial explains or even refers to this injustice. “That solemn representation,” Dershowitz writes, “was the quid pro quo for Pollard’s plea of guilty. It violates both the letter and the spirit of that plea bargain. For Mr. Bowman,

20 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

who was a justice department official at the time, now to urge that Pollard must serve the life sentence imposed on him by the court despite the government having sought a sentence that Pollard has already completed.” Of course, based on historical and legal precedent, it made plenty of sense for prosecutors not to seek a life sentence for Pollard. As historian Gil Troy documented a few years ago, “Spies for other allies, like Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Egypt and the Philippines, served anywhere from two to four years, with maximum sentences of 10 years.” Even two American traitors who spied for the Soviet enemy during the Cold War, Sgt. Clayton Lonetree and FBI agent Richard Miller, served sentences of nine years and 13 years, respectively. The well-known story that former

Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger had it in for Pollard and pushed for a life sentence with the sentencing judge may explain the government’s betrayal, but it hardly justifies it. So, given that Pollard is now serving his 29th year behind bars, it’s not paranoid for Troy to wonder: “Pollard’s extreme sentence – along with the continuing refusal to free him – has raised questions about official American anti-Semitism and whether Pollard is enduring harsher punishment for the crime of being an American Jew spying for Israel.” Despite all this evidence of discrimination and unfairness, the mainstream Jewish community has generally been reluctant to dirty its hands with this case. If anything, it has gone out of its way not to defend Pollard, lest it be accused of dual loyalty. But what so many in our community have missed is that even more than anti-Semitism, the Pollard case is one of anti-Americanism.

Pollard should have been released years ago because discrimination and unfairness are anti-American ideas. As Judge Stephen Williams wrote in one of Pollard’s failed appeals, the government’s treatment of Pollard is “a fundamental miscarriage of justice.” It’s no coincidence that prominent non-Jews, including former Secretary of State George Shulz and former CIA Director James Woolsey, as well as political leaders from both parties, have been lobbying for his release. They’re not lobbying because Pollard is a hero. He’s not. He’s a criminal. But in America, even criminals have rights, and those rights can get violated. The Pollard affair is no longer about the darkness of his crime – it’s about the violation of his rights. Jews must have enough faith in the American system to advocate for Pollard’s rights without feeling the paranoia of dual loyalty. Those who are finally lobbying for his release on the basis of compassion

– focusing on his worsening health – are not doing him any favors. This case doesn’t revolve around compassion; it revolves around justice run amok. As Troy writes, “Justice when applied too zealously becomes unjust.” You can hate Pollard because of what he did. You can hate him for making you cringe in embarrassment. You can hate him for making American Jews look disloyal to this amazing country. But if you really want to show your loyalty to America, in my book there’s no better way than to show loyalty to America’s values. And what American value is greater and more honorable than “justice for all”? The very greatness of this country is that it puts values ahead of men. The values of fairness and justice for Jonathan Pollard are a lot more important than who he is – even if you think he’s a shameful Jew. This op-ed originally appeared in the Jewish Journal

Naming a Baby A name defines a person’s essence. Choose carefully.

by Rabbi Shraga Simmons

T

he naming of a Jewish child is a most profound spiritual moment. The Sages say that naming a baby is a statement of her character, her specialness, and her path in life. For at the beginning of life we give a name, and at the end of life a “good name” is all we take with us. (see Talmud – Brachot 7b; Arizal – Sha’ar HaGilgulim 24b) Further, the Talmud tells us that parents receive one-sixtieth of prophecy when picking a name. An angel comes to the parents and whispers the Jewish name that the new baby will embody. Yet this still doesn’t seem to help parents from agonizing over which name to pick! So how do we choose a name? And why is the father’s name traditionally not given to a son – e.g. Jacob Cohen Jr., Isaac Levy III? Can a boy be named after a female relative? Can the name be announced before the Bris?

Jewish Customs

Naming a Jewish baby is not only a statement of what we hope she will be, but also where she comes from.

Ashkenazi Jews have the custom of naming a child after a relative who has passed away. This keeps the name and memory alive, and in a metaphysical way forms a bond between the soul of the baby and the deceased relative. This is a great honor to the deceased, because its soul can achieve an elevation based on the good deeds of the namesake. The child, meanwhile, can be inspired by the good qualities of the deceased – and make a deep connection to the past. (Noam Elimelech - Bamidbar) What if you would like to use the name of a relative who passed away, but another living relative has the same name? In that case, if the living relative is closely related to the baby – parent, grandparent, or sibling – then you should not use the name. Otherwise, it’s okay. Sephardi Jews also name children after relatives who are still alive. This source is from the Talmud, which records a child named after Rabbi Natan while he was still alive (Shabbat 134a). Some customarily choose a name based on the Jewish holiday coinciding with the birth. For example, a baby

30 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

born at Purim-time might be named Esther or Mordechai. A girl born on Shavuot might be named Ruth, and a child born on Tisha B’Av, the Jewish day of mourning, might be named Menachem or Nechamah. Similarly, names are sometimes chosen from the Torah portion corresponding to the week of the birth. Many names and events are mentioned in each Torah portion, offering a spiritual connection between the baby and that particular biblical figure.

Inner Meaning

In Hebrew, a name is not merely a convenient conglomeration of letters. Rather the name reveals its essential characteristic. The Midrash (Genesis Raba 17:4) tells us that the first man, Adam, looked into the essence of every creature and named it accordingly. The donkey, for example, is characterized by carrying heavy, physical burdens. So in Hebrew, the donkey is named chamor – from the same root as chomer, which means materialism. (Contrast this with English, where the word “donkey” doesn’t reveal

BUZZ!

MAGAZINE

much about the essence of a donkey!) The same idea applies to names of people. For example, Leah named her fourth son Judah (in Hebrew, Yehudah). This comes from the same root as the word “thanks.” The letters can also be rearranged to spell out the holy Name of God. The significance is that Leah wanted to particularly express her “thanks to God.” (Genesis 29:35)

It is important to choose a name that will have a positive effect, since every time it is used the person is reminded of its meaning (Midrash Tanchuma – Ha’Azinu 7). The person who is called Judah is constantly reminded of how much gratitude we should have toward God! Esther, the hero of the Purim story, is a name which comes from the word “hidden.” Esther was known to

MAGAZINE

be a very beautiful woman (she was chosen to be queen), but whatever her external appearances, her hidden internal qualities were even more beautiful. Another example is the popular name “Ari,” Hebrew for lion. In Jewish literature, the lion is a symbol of a go-getter, someone who sees the opportunity to do a mitzvah, and pounces on it. (see Code of Jewish

31

Law O.C. 1) Of course, there are bad names, too. You won’t want to choose the name “Nimrod,” since the very name means “rebellion.” And in biblical times, the ruler Nimrod threw Abraham into a fiery furnace as an act of rebellion against God. If you want to name a male after a female, you should try to keep as many of the letters of the name as possible. For example, Dina could be interchangeable with Dan, or Bracha and Baruch.

Shel Shlomo – Gittin 4:30) Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky considered the age of 60 the demarcation between young and old. The Talmud (Moed Katan 28a) relates that Rabbi Yosef made a party when he reached 60, celebrating the beginning of longevity. Contrary to popular perception, it is not forbidden to announce the name of a baby before his Bris. In a metaphysical sense, however, the

More Guidelines

The Jewish people were redeemed from Egypt partly in the merit of having kept their Jewish names.

It’s a good idea to give a child a Hebrew name that can be used in English also – e.g. Miriam, David, Sarah, Noah, Rachel. This way, your child not only has a Hebrew name, but he’ll use it, too! This can be an important hedge against assimilation; the Midrash (Bamidbar Raba 20:21) says that the Jewish people were redeemed from Egypt partly in the merit of having kept their Jewish names. As a child, I had one uncle who always called me by my Jewish name (“Shraga” means candle), a constant reminder to maintain my Jewish identity. There is hesitancy to use the name of a person who died at a young age, or suffered an unnatural death. The reluctance stems from the fear that the misfortune may, in a spiritual manner, be carried over to the new bearer of the name. Although “dying young” is a relative term, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein offers some guidelines: If a person died a natural death and left children, this is not considered “bad fortune” which would preclude the use of the name. Both the prophet Samuel and King Solomon died at the “young” age of 52, yet traditionally their names have always been used by Jews. If, however, a person died an unnatural death, then Rabbi Feinstein suggests that the name be altered. It may be for this reason that when naming after the prophet Isaiah – who was murdered – many Jews omit the last letter of his name (in Hebrew, Yeshaya instead of Yeshiyahu). (Yam

child does not actually “receive” his name until the Bris. This is based on the fact that God changed Abraham’s name in conjunction with his Bris – at age 99 (Genesis 17:15). Also, the boy only receives the full measure of his soul at the Bris, and a person cannot truly be “named” until attaining that completion. (see Zohar – Lech Lecha 93a, Ta’amei Minhagim 929)

Every Star a Name

As Rabbi Baruch & Michal Finkelstein write in the book, “Nine Wonderful Months – B’Sha’ah Tovah” (Feldheim Publishers): King David wrote in Psalms (147:4): “He counts the numbers of the stars; He gives a name to each of them.” Since the beginning of time, the stars have captured mankind’s imagination. They hold the secrets of creation, and of the future. They are a

32 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

road map to the navigator, a challenge to the astronomer, and a symbol of quest to the explorer. Those sparkling lights in the vast darkness seem so small, yet we know they are not. Their numbers reach infinity, but all are special to God, and “He gives each a name.” Each has its unique purpose, and no two are exactly the same. The Torah often compares the Jewish people to the stars (Genesis 15:5). For just as the stars eliminate the darkness of night, so the Jewish people enlighten the darkness of the world with the truth of Torah. Just as stars guide travelers along their way, the Jewish people give moral and ethical direction to mankind. As the stars hold of the secrets of the future, world history revolves around the Jewish people, leading inexorably to the final redemption. Just as massive stars appear tiny, so the Jewish people seem insignificant in comparison to a world population of billions. Yet there exists an underlying understanding of the contributing force and massive potential of the Jewish people. God gives names to each star, for they are dear to Him, and likewise He takes part in naming every Jew. Like the stars, no two Jewish souls are exactly alike. Every Jew has his unique function and special mitzvah in which he excels. Every Jew shines a different light. In the days of redemption, the love of God for His children will be ever so clear. As we read in the haftarah every year after Tisha B’Av: “Lift your eyes on high and behold Who has created these things [the stars], that bring out their host by number. He calls them all by names; because of the greatness of His might and because He is strong in power, not one is missing” (Isaiah 40:26). At the final redemption, every Jew will return to Jerusalem – “not one will be missing.” Each one will again be counted, and to each one God will give a name.

Summer Blendin'

Cool and refreshing concoctions.

t seems to be that ever where I go lately I find myself giving out these recipes again and again. People are shocked to hear that there is such an easy and healthy solution to that heavy summer feeling that begs for a quick pick-me-up. The positive feedback is getting so great that I decided to let everybody in on the secret. Make space on your counter -- the blender is here!

Tropical Freeze

Fruit Milkshake

Directions: Place ingredients in blender and blend. Add more juice as necessary until the mixture is thoroughly blended and smooth. Pour in glasses and serve immediately.

Because this is a milk-based shake, it is not recommended to use any citrusy fruits. As long as your fruit is ripe and sweet enough, there is no need for any added sugar. For the best results, freeze your fruit at least a day in advance. I purposely buy overly ripe soft fruits, cut them into cubes and then portion them out into sandwich bags. When I am ready to make my shake, I just spill the frozen contents in the blender and add the milk! Ingredients: 1 ½ cups cubed and frozen fruit – try banana, cantaloupe, peaches, plums, cherries, strawberries, etc. 4 dates, almonds, or walnuts (optional) 1 ½ cups cold milk

What a cool refresher on a hot afternoon! Ingredients: 1 ½ cups cubed and frozen fruit – try mango, kiwi, pineapple, strawberry, banana, etc. 1 cup cold pineapple juice

Apple Slushie

A quick cool solution when you are out of frozen fruit. Try experimenting with other juice concentrates! Ingredients: 1 ¾ cup ice, cubes or crushed 1 ½ cups water, room temperature 2 tablespoons apple juice concentrate

SUDOKU

HOW TO PLAY

The objective of sudoku is to enter a digit from 1 through 9 in each cell, in such a way that: Each horizontal row contains each digit exactly once Each vertical column contains each digit exactly once Each subgrid or region contains each digit exactly once

The puzzler’s job is to fill the remainder of the grid with digits –respecting, of course, the three constraints mentioned earlier.

HARD

In each sudoku puzzle, several digits have already been entered (the “givens”); these may not be changed.

Vegetable Kebabs Kebabs are a very popular way of serving your favorite veggies. the beauty with kebabs is that your imagination is the limit most vegetables, and some fruits too, are delicious combined with tofu, poultry, meat or fish. try cherry tomatoes, portobello or smaller mushrooms, pearl onions, peppers, summer squash or eggplant (cut into ¼ inch cubes), pineapple chunks, apple slices... any other favorite is worth experimenting with! Simply insert your chosen combination onto skewers, brush with a little olive oil, or find a reduced calorie marinade, and grill over the BBQ. the best part about grilling vegetables is that you don’t have to worry about overcooking them as you do with some types of meat. Vegetables seem to taste better grilled than they do cooked any other way. Marinating vegetables will help them caramelize better when they’re grilled, and caramelization brings out the best flavor. Just submerge the vegetables in marinade for about an hour before putting them on the grill. If you don’t have that kind of prep time, just coat the vegetables ever so lightly with a little olive oil or canola oil and some soy or teriyaki sauce.

Steak — the all time favorite the best steaks are those that marinated for a few hours before hitting the grill. a good idea is to marinate your steaks in the morning and refrigerate. When you return from your outing, the steaks will be ready to go.

Best BBQ sauce Making your own BBQ sauce is quite simple and gives you an opportunity to choose your favorite ingredients. a perfect steak needs to be started way before the meat goes the grill. the sauce is the secret to a good steak.

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and pour over meat, chicken or vegetables in a plastic bag. put your 4 steaks into the bag and make sure all meat is well coated. refrigerate the meat in the marinade for at least 1 hour prior to broiling.

½ cup light soy sauce ½ cup honey 2 cloves garlic crushed Salt & pepper to taste

Make sure your grill is very hot and coals have a white color so that the meat does not burn. Slower cooking will render the meat healthier. Serve it medium rare rather than well done. Serves 4 preparation time: 10 minutes + marinating time

Some tips to help you attain a healthier BBQ:

1

HaVe larGe reSealaBle PlaSTiC BaG for MarinaTinG! One of the easiest ways to marinate and enhance the taste of anything you want on the grill including vegetables is to place them inside a large, resalable plastic bag. Set the bag in a medium sized bowl, and shake until all the food is coated. Seal the bag, eliminating any excess air. the marinade should surround the food. Keep marinated vegetables in the refrigerator until you’re ready to grill.

It adds flavor and helps to balance other bold spices in the marinade or sauce. too much sweetness can encourage the meat, fish, or vegetables to burn when they’re grilled over high heat.

3

Be SenSiBle aBouT SerVinGS. Encourage eating smaller servings by grilling the meat in smaller portions. It can be quite tempting to eat a 16 oz steak or a ½ chicken. Cut your food into smaller pieces to avoid overdoing it.
