Macy’s Moguls The Straus Brothers The rags to riches story of Isidor and Nathan Straus. by Ronda Robinson
M
iracle on 34th Street, a perennial classic this time of year about a man named Kris Kringle hired to play Santa at Macy’s, took poetic license. One of the main characters was R.H. Macy, who actually died in 1877, decades before the story in the 1947 movie took place. In reality, two Jewish brothers, Isidor and Nathan Straus, had become the sole owners of Macy’s in 1896.
They were the first businessmen in America to form a mutual aid society to help their employees with medical care. They had a doctor and nurse on the premises. They also provided picnics and sleigh rides, low-cost lunches and Thanksgiving turkeys for their employees. The German-Jewish family, who owned Macy’s for a century, became well known for their devotion to social welfare, not only for employees, but also the larger community, nation

and Israel. “Their legacy is of compassion and kindness and a serious commitment to business,” says Joan Adler, executive director of the Straus Historical Society Inc. “They were very, very employee conscious,” agrees Robert Grippo, author of two books about Macy’s. “They believed in giving back.” Grippo wrote in “Macy’s: The Store. The Star. The Story” that if one of the brothers notices an employee

and he didn’t believe he could do both. Although he never held a New York City office, he was active in many organizations that supported the commerce and industry of the city. He also devoted his time to philanthropic organizations. Isidor & Ida Blun Straus (Courtesy of Straus Historical Society) He helped establish Montefiore Hospital and the Educational Alliance (Settlement House) in New York. The latter began as a place for immigrants in congested tenements to learn how to acclimate to the United States. All told, the alliance has helped 4 million New Yorkers of diverse backgrounds.
The Titanic Isidor was at the helm as president of Macy’s until he and his wife, Ida, died on the Titanic when it hit an iceberg and sank in 1912. “Mrs. Straus had a chance to be saved, but she refused to leave her husband,” a Titanic survivor reported, explaining that lifeboats rescued women and children first. “As our boat moved away from the ship, the last boat of all, we could plainly see Mr. and Mrs. Straus standing near the rail with their arms around each other. “The lights of the Titanic were all burning and the band was playing. To me the most affecting episode of the whole disaster was that final glimpse of this elderly couple awaiting the end together.” The Ida and Isidor Straus Memorial Plaque mounted in the Manhattan Macy’s “Their lives were beautiful and their deaths glorious.” The sentiment long graced a plaque inside what became known as Macy’s Memorial Entrance, on 34th Street in New York. Newspaper headlines like “Mr. and Mrs. Straus Go Down with Arms Entwined” riveted readers. More than 2,000 people packed Carnegie Hall to pay their respects and hear tributes to the Strauses. An estimated 40,000 attended a memorial service at The Educational Alliance. A New York Times obituary recalled Isidor as a director in many
seemed troubled or unwell, he would inquire about the problem and provide whatever assistance was needed, whether it was money, a new suit or a doctor’s services. “This sincere interest created a warm family feeling and esprit de corps that was long remarked upon by Macy’s employees.” The Straus Family history is a rags to riches immigrant story. Isidor and Nathan’s father, Lazarus, immigrated to the United States in 1852, following the 1848 revolution in Germany and the economic difficulties that ensued. Philadelphia was the center of the German Jewish population at that time, but Lazarus was told he would find better opportunities in the South. He made his way to Oglethorpe, Ga., where fellow German Jews set him up as a pushcart peddler to the plantation owners. By 1854 he had opened a drygoods store in Talbotton, Ga., and sent for his wife Sara and four surviving children. A fifth child had died at age 1½ years old. In 1863 they moved to a larger town 40 miles away, Columbus, Ga., where
they became successful merchants. Yet they couldn’t feel comfortable in the shadow of chaos once again: the Civil War. At the close of the war in 1865, much of Columbus was reduced to ashes. Lazarus moved his family to New York, opening a company that imported china, porcelain, glassware and crockery. The firm became known throughout the world. In 1873 the Strauses convinced Rowland H. Macy to allow them to run a concession in the basement of his store on 14th Street. By 1884 they were part-owners of R. H. Macy’s & Co., and by 1896 they were the sole owners. Like Macy’s, Isidor’s star was rising. More than any other, he was the man who made Macy’s, according to Joan Adler. ”They had a huge house on W. 105th Street with the first indoor porcelain bathtub.” Isidor was also a U.S. Congressman from 1894-1895. He was asked to run for re-election but declined, stating his responsibilities at home were great

and supporter of almost every philanthropic institution in New York. That remains the family’s legacy several generations later – as individuals and business and community leaders. Adler calls them an “unbelievably high-achieving family who are very mindful of the opportunity they’ve been given and believe in paying it forward.”
Nathan Straus’s Legacy Isidor’s business partner, his brother Nathan, brought pasteurization to the world. He may have become interested after a cow on his farm died of tuberculosis. He learned Louis Pasteur’s heat process to kill bacteria in liquids and hired scientists to build a laboratory to make clean milk. Then he created depots across New York to distribute pasteurized milk at low or no cost. Nathan is credited with saving the lives of countless babies.
“It is due entirely to your campaign for the purification of the milk of the city of some years ago that the Health Department has been able to report recently that the mortality figures have been cut just in half. One infant out of every two in New York owes its existence to you,” the mayor of New York told him. An avid Zionist after his first trip to Palestine in 1904, Nathan built food pantries and helped found the Joint Distribution Committee. He provided money for the establishment of the Jerusalem Health Center and gave the building over to Hadassah when it opened in 1929. Straus Street in Jerusalem is named in honor of him and his wife, Lina. The Israeli coastal city Netanya, founded in 1928, was also named in honor of Nathan Straus. With all their successes, the Straus family has known its share of heartache. “Theirs was an era when children died,” says Adler. “Each of them had children who didn’t make it.

I think that was the biggest struggle, health.” Lazarus, the patriarch who moved his brood from Germany to the United States, had to start over in a new country and then again when he lost almost everything during the Civil War. A century later, the empire his heirs built was gone with the wind. “The Rain on Macy’s Parade: How Greed, Ambition, and Folly Ruined America’s Greatest Store” by Jeffrey Trachtenberg chronicles the takeover of Macy’s by the chairman (who wasn’t related to the Strauses) and a group of board members in 1986. Their leveraged buyout meant the end of a revered business culture. However, the Straus culture lives on in more than 1,000 family members, according to historian Adler. They continue to donate time and money to worthy endeavors and put a proud face to the Jewish immigrant experience in America. Reprinted from aish.com

Cleaning Queen What I learned from my Israeli cleaning lady.
I
love Israelis. I grew up here and I’m an Israeli. I don’t have any difficulty with the bureaucracy, with the Israeli mentality. I take personal offense when people talk of Israelis as being brash, arrogant, impatient, quick-tempered and not serviceoriented. Israelis are also frank, open, caring and would go out of their way to help you if you were in trouble. They also keep immaculately clean homes and mop their floors on an hourly basis. So when I was searching for the perfect cleaning lady to get me headstarted on my Passover cleaning, I was thrilled to hear about Tzippy. An Israeli woman in her late 40s, with a few older children of her own, she started working as a cleaning lady to support her family. “She charges more per hour than any regular cleaning lady,” my sister-in-law said, “but she’ll clean your house for Pesach top to bottom, and she won’t leave until every last surface, shelf, drawer and closet is sparkling. She’s not just a cleaning lady -- she’s a home organizer!” Sounded like a dream come true. And I was happy I was supporting the economy, and a Jewish family in need. Tzippy walked in for the first
time one afternoon and got right to business. Literally. “These are the cleaning products I will need to work with. These two special cloths cost 20 shekels each, this bigger one costs 40 shekel, and oh! You have stainless steel sinks! You need this cleaning agent I have. I import these products directly from Japan. Let me see if I have one in the car.” And out the door she flew before I had a chance to close my mouth. Did she say a car? And she lives only a few blocks away, in the poorer part of the neighborhood, so I thought. In she came with a small white container which looked remarkably like Ajax with no label. Sprinkle, sprinkle all over my sinks, rub, rub with her magic cloths, and presto! The stainless steel was shining. She turned to me with a satisfied smile. “You see? Only 50 shekels for this wonderful product. You have such beautiful sinks and you can’t even see them! Oy! What a tragedy when things aren’t clean!” I felt weak. “50 shekels? Is that yours?” “Of course not! It’s yours! I told you I was getting it for you from the car. You see how wonderful it is, right? You just can’t argue with a cleaning product.”
40 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885
by Dina Coopersmith Well, that’s for sure. It seemed I couldn’t argue with her either. The words just wouldn’t come out. I shrugged in defeat. I wasn’t going to let this lady and the sudden hemorrhaging of my wallet get me down. I was going to focus on the wonderful cleaning job she was doing and forget about the money. For now. Throughout the afternoon, whenever I stopped in to gauge her progress, she would stop, show me around my now gleaming windows/ doors, drawer handles, and ask me, “How have you survived this long without me? Don’t you do anything to maintain this place? Such a beautiful house and you can’t even see it! What has your other cleaning lady been doing? Now you can finally breathe in this room!” She sighed in pleasure, looking as if she were the only woman in the world who had discovered life’s purpose: cleaning! Three hours later, there was soapy water all over my kitchen floor, and she was on a ladder shining the top windows of the porch (windows I don’t get to more than once a year). “Um, Tzippy?” I gingerly started, “Normally, I’d like you to come for about two hours each time. I understand the first time takes longer, but when do you think, um, you’ll be done?”

“Two hours? In this house? You’ll never finish it by Pesach at this rate! Well, whatever! It’s up to you -whenever you want, I’ll leave. It’s your house, right?” Right. Somehow I’d forgotten. When she finally left -- an hour later -- her parting response to my feeble complaint about having been left completely broke was, “Well maybe you should get yourself another job. You need me, sweetheart!” I slumped down on the couch, drained. Why did I feel so inadequate? Why did I find myself completely tongue-tied when faced with this woman who had this one skill I lacked -- the ability to make surfaces shine? Didn’t I have a Masters degree and 15 years of teaching experience under my belt? And here I was giving myself a pep-talk after a few hours with a cleaning lady, for heaven’s sake! I was definitely losing it. Then I realized (after bemoaning my fate as the only sucker who would buy no-brand Ajax for $13) that the issue was this: Tzippy had mastered the art of elevating the mundane to the meaningful. She took her expertise and perfected it. She was no mere cleaning lady; she was a “home organizer.” To her, every act of rubbing, scrubbing, shpritzing
and washing was immeasurably important, even holy. Her life was filled with excitement and pleasure. And that’s what made me feel vulnerable. It was a lesson I needed to learn and integrate into my own life. My life is filled with many meaningful and satisfying activities. Being a wife, mother and teacher give me purpose and joy. But every day also contains those repetitive, dull, less-thaninspiring moments that I frequently find taxing. After a few hours worth of teenager rantings, children’s insistent requests and demands, running around with a two-year-old in the park, changing diapers, feeding, cooking, doing laundry, cleaning up over and over again, I often feel justified in being bad-tempered. How can I feel energized and fulfilled, I reason, after so many hours of tedious, physical activities? I often rejuvenate by doing some stimulating Jewish learning, going out for coffee with a friend, or having a phone-date with a study partner. I assume I need to escape from these mundane responsibilities to maintain my equilibrium. Seeing Tzippy take charge like a queen in her palace showed me that instead I can find purpose within the concrete activities themselves. I can choose to view every
42 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885
act of parenting -- even the repetitive, physical ones -- as the extremely important task of educating, molding and influencing another human being, which involves much thought and expertise. I can choose to view every moment of cooking nutritious dinners and every hour of playing in the park with my two-year-old as the creative and artful skill of developing and nurturing my family’s physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being. And looking back at the accomplishments of the day, I can say to myself (hearing Tzippy’s voice in my head): Do you see that happy child? Did you hear that new word I just taught him? How would anybody survive here without me? It’s not easy, but it is possible for me to reframe and review all those physical acts in my day as having immense value and meaning. In any routine, mundane moment, there exists the potential for spirituality and fulfillment. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not about to give up my teaching job to make sure I have enough time to keep the tub spotless and shining. I still can’t quite connect to the wonderful joy of cleaning floors that will get dirty again moments later. So thank God for the Tzippys of the world!

The Flatbush Basketball League Week #4 Recap Junior Division In a game between undefeated 3-0 Oh Baby and 2-1 Rami’s Pizza the game was intense as Rami’s tried to give Oh Baby their first loss. Jonathan Tzubary was unstoppable as he always is scoring 22 points with a little help from Yehuda Zev Blatter (6 points). Sender Gelbtuch was leading scorer for Rami’s with 10 while Mutty Izsak had 9. At the end, Oh Baby was too strong and defeated Rami’s 37-32. The two 1-2 place teams went at it as, Jewish Connection faced off against 5 Towns Jewish Times. In this one, Yitzi Ponzak led all scorers with 11 and Efraim Obermeister had 6 for the Connection. In this low scoring game, Yossi Harar’s 10 for 5TJT was not enough to win this one as they fell short 21-14. 5TJT now shares the #4 seed with Rami’s Pizza. Intermediate Division With leading scorer Shimon Greenwald out for Batampte Pickles, Buzz Magazine was looking to take advantage, and boy did they ever. Yitzchok Devor was out of
control scoring 40 points for Buzz, and he made it look easy. Zevy Finkelstein poured on another 20 to add fuel to the fire. Aryeh Ponzak, Adam Feigenbaum and Co. made a strong effort for Batampte scoring 28 and 22 respectively. However, the damage was done as Buzz Magazine grabbed their first win in a blowout 77-57. In one of the most intense and shocking games of the season, Horsepower Electric went up against China Glatt, and no one would have guessed the ending in this one. With Horsepower up the entire game by as much as 15, and David Suad at his usual with 21 points, Leiby Leibowitz (26 points) and Co. for China Glatt did not go down without a fight. It came down the last few minutes of the game as Ezzy Shain was hitting shot after shot to put China Glatt within reach. Ezzy scored 10 of his 14 points in the final minutes of the game. Newly added Dovy Florans poured in another 10 for China as well. On the other side, Yitzi Waxman (12) and Zevi Giniger (13) were also hitting from all angles. At the end, China Glatt came back from what
54 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885
everyone thought would be impossible to beat Horsepower 56-55. Senior Division ITP 41 Pizza Nosh 34: In an exciting game between the 3-0 ITP and 0-3 Pizza Nosh, Nosh was looking for their first W of the season. Mendy Schiffenbauer was at his usual putting up 16 against a struggling Pizza Nosh gang. Yehudah Fonfeder’s 12 points for Nosh just was not enough to help his team bounce back from a 1 point deficit at half, 20-19. ITP was able to pull off yet another win. Will a trade be coming soon? Stay tuned… Plaza Auto Leasing 45 Visual Image 40- In another close game, the two middle ranked teams went at it. Dovid Beer was amazing in this one, ripping boards and scoring 12 for PAL and Naftali Waldman and Naftoli Bornstein both had 11. Tzvi Baruch (17) and Daniel Bressler (13) tried to tried to capitalize only down by 5 at half, however, it was not meant to be.
