The Power of Simcha How This Special Middah of Adar Can Actually Transform Lives By Simmy Horwitz

Most

people assume that the “Simmy” in my name is short for “Sima.” Actually, “Simmy” in my case stands for “Simcha.” The Sephardim use Simcha as a feminine name; and while I’m not Sephardi by any means (my pale skin is a dead giveaway), I was named after a great-aunt with Sephardic ancestry. Growing up with such a close connection to this positive middah imbued me with a sense of mission to live up to it. I have been told n u m e ro u s times t h a t

my Great-Aunt Simcha, a”h, was truly a simchadike person who embodied her name, and I always feel inspired to try to achieve this high level for myself. You don’t have to be named Simcha, however, to strive to achieve a life lived joyously and happily. Besides being an important mitzvah—mitzvah gedolah l’hiyos b’simcha tamid, a state of happiness can lead to incredible changes in a person’s life, both physically and emotionally. As Adar rolls in, let’s learn about the special ways that simcha can alter lives and how we can channel this middah to improve our own.

The cheering squads A few years ago, the Harvard School of Public Health released a study that revealed that long-term stress levels and negative thought patterns were reduced in people who engaged in a regular

happiness-inducing activity. They found that when people were consistent about taking time to raise the level of joy in their lives, they had an overall healthier emotional mindset and a marked absence of negative moods and self-destructive habits. Even more remarkably, Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert found that one year after the lifechanging events of winning the lottery and becoming a paraplegic, both lottery winners and paraplegics rated themselves at almost equal levels of happiness. He concluded that it is the responsibility of each individual person to seek out ways to improve his own happiness, and only this will lead to greater emotional health. Mrs. Miriam Rabinowitz, popular Lakewood simcha dancing instructor, has found that exercise is one way to improve levels of emotional health. “Dancing, or any exercise, releases stress, increases confidence and provides a good temporary distraction from the tension of everyday life,” Mrs. Rabinowitz explains, drawing on over 10 years of simcha dancing experience. Mrs. Rabinowitz expounds on the benefits of regular exercise: When a person engages in physical activity, certain hormones are released that improve moods. She adds that while dancing, the music alone can bring a smile to a person’s face and uplift her state of mind. Engaging in an extracurricular activity such as simcha dancing can give kids or teenagers a way to feel good about themselves and build self-confidence in an area outside of schoolwork. Rabbi Lipa Schwartz of Misameach, an organization dedicated to bringing cheer in many forms to the sick, offers a perspective of someone involved in the emotional

health of the very ill. “Happiness can improve a patient’s emotional health in both the long and short term. We just had a case with a 19-year-old boy named Avrumi* who has a terminal illness. He had a period where he felt down and wasn’t interested in eating, seeing anyone, or doing much of anything. Avrumi particularly loves Yaakov Shwekey’s music, so we sent him down to sing to him and the effects were immediate. His family reported that for the rest of the day, he was on a high. Not only did his appetite return, but he became animated, engaged in conversation and was even smiling.” Through his wonderful work with Misameach, Rabbi Schwartz has seen that patients who have regular, happiness-inducing interactions are more likely to maintain their will to live.

Believe it, achieve it! The mind is a powerful thing, and one incredible outcome of achieving a higher state of happiness is actual physical healing. After seeing so many cases of patients’ health improving through the services of Misameach, Rabbi Schwartz is an emphatic believer in the mind-body happiness connection. “We have so many stories of seeing patients’ conditions turn around after cheering them up,” reports Rabbi Schwartz. In one amazing case, a little girl was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where she underwent major brain surgery. After the surgery, she was completely unresponsive. Misameach was called in, and a team of jugglers, clowns and entertainers put on the show of their lives for an hour and a half for a patient who

- The Power of Simcha didn’t seem to be conscious enough to know that they were there. Incredibly, at the end of the performance, this sweet girl woke up and began to talk! In another unbelievable circumstance, a 12-yearold boy was very sick and had extremely high blood pressure levels. Although it was late at night, Misameach was asked to come and perform for him. Amazingly, within minutes of their performance, the boy’s blood pressure came d o w n and was able to be regulated. The power of happiness was able to achieve what modern medicine couldn’t accomplish.

Mrs. Chaya Hinda Allen, a speaker and founder of the Think Positive! Program, works with women on achieving happiness regardless of life circumstances. Mrs. Allen quotes a study performed by Dr. Christiane Northup, in which Dr. Northup explains that hope actually creates a chemical reaction in the body that improves physical health by lowering the leading causes of low immunity. She provides an example of a 73-year-old cancer patient who imagined himself clean of cancer and found himself to be completely cancer-free two weeks later. This demonstrates how the way we view our reality affects our outcome.

The power of happiness was able to achieve what modern medicine couldn’t accomplish.

Mrs. Allen continues that happiness has been shown to promote better health, ward off illness and increase lifespan.

Amazing Ideas for Parenting Teens by Sara Debbie Gutfreund Love them like you are running out of time, because you are.

E

very kid is one, caring adult away from being a success story.” Josh Shipp said in his incredible video about how a parent or anyone who invests in a child can change that child’s future. A Harvard study, conducted in their Center for the Developing Child in March 2015, backs this up: “Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.” We all love our children and want them to be happy and successful. But after watching Josh’s video, I realized that I don’t have all the time in the world left with each of my children. They will eventually grow up as they are already beginning to do. And then they will start their own lives and make their own choices without my presence. My time for nurturing each of our children in our home is a ticking clock. Josh Shipp teaches some amazing ideas on how to be better, more loving parents for our teens based on his own very difficult childhood. Here are a few of them: Invest time in your teen. Step one: Find out what they are into. Step two: Spend time doing what matters to them because they matter to you. Step three: Your investment of time will lead to influential conversations. Don’t become discouraged. Sometimes when we invest time in our

30

children, it feels like it’s not working. But kids spell trust T-I-M-E and if you keep investing time and attention, even if that kid is still acting out and you don’t think he deserves it, the caring and investment will eventually pay off. Let your children know you see their potential. Look at their challenges as opportunities instead of problems. Let them know that you see beneath the surface of their actions; when kids don’t talk out, they will act out. Give them the space and safety to talk by making it clear to them that you see their amazing potential and that you believe they will overcome their obstacles. Wishful thinking is not a strategy. When our children are little, we may dismiss some of their behavior as just a stage that they will soon grow out of, and this is usually true. But when our teenagers are struggling, they need help and support even if they aren’t overtly acting out. Don’t assume they will outgrow their challenges; the teenage years are such a critical stage in the development of confidence and emotional skills for life. Be proactive in guiding your teens through whatever they are struggling with. Difficult and impossible are not synonyms. When we are in the middle of raising our teenagers it may seem like some obstacles are so difficult that success seems impossible. But difficult is not impossible; it’s just hard. Don’t give up hope before you even try.

Practically following through on Shipp’s advice is understandably the hardest part of using these ideas. Some of us don’t approve or respect the things that our teens are into so we don’t take that crucial first step of spending time doing what matters to them because they matter to us. But this is a critical, if not the most critical part, of giving your child your time. I did this recently with one of my daughters. She loves shopping, and I would be happy to never have to endure walking for hours through the boring, meaningless stores of the mall. But I love my daughter, and what she likes really does matter to me because it matters to her. So I have been shopping with her more lately, not necessarily to buy things but to talk, to laugh, to enjoy each other’s company. And I try to focus on how grateful I am that my daughter still wants to spend the day shopping with me. That we are close enough to have jokes between us that no one else understands. And that I am making sure to invest as much I can in these precious few remaining years of her childhood. Because in the end, the opportunity to be a parent is an incredible gift that we can only receive if we see our children as the blessings that they really are. And we can and should take our most precious possession, time, to actualize these blessings entrusted in our care.

Massive 2016 J-Biz Expo is Launched at VIP Anniversary Celebration of Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce By: Shimmy Blum

A

few short minutes after taking Exit 114 off the Garden State Parkway, you knew you were going somewhere

special. The Bell Works Building in Holmdel, New Jersey is essentially a high end city of its own. With over 2 million square feet of space, and cavernous parking lots and roads surrounding it, you feel business innovation and energy upon approach. On Thursday evening, the path through the main entrance to the building was adorned by decorative lanterns, and straight ahead through the massive lobby, was a VIP gathering to celebrate the first anniversary of the founding of the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce (OJC), and the official launch of the 2016 J-Biz Expo. The by-invitation-only attendees included prominent businesspeople, bank representatives, community activists, government officials and others who are part of the OJC’s formidable network. Attendees came from Boro Park, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Crown Heights, Manhattan, Lakewood, Monsey, Far Rockaway, Deal, Baltimore, and other neighborhoods. They enjoyed an upscale buffet and dessert presentation from Prime 95 Restaurant of Lakewood, as well as a delectable wine tasting from Royal Wines, while celebrating the OJC’s accomplishments and collaborating for the road ahead. A prominent entrepreneur and media personality, Ari Zoldan, CEO of Quantum Networks, served as the event’s emcee. Mr. Zoldan spoke of how the OJC is already “moving the needle”

on behalf of our community’s business success. He spoke of how valuable the Rolodex of business contacts he amassed over the years is to his success. “Technology doesn’t run enterprises; relationships do,” Mr. Zoldan summed up. Duvi Honig, founder and director of the OJC, then detailed, to loud applause, the stunning progress that the Chamber has made within just one year. It counts as members approximately 1,000 diverse community businesses from throughout the region, and forged coveted relationships with leading figures in the business and governmental spheres. Several networking events, seminars and other OJC events are scheduled for this month in Brooklyn and Lakewood, and a satellite office is set to open soon in Queens. A lot more will follow in the months and years ahead, with a powerful Public Policy Committee and Regional Committees in various neighborhoods at the helm. “Our community is one body of water, with drops in different locations around the world,” Mr. Honig said. “When the Chamber brings us together, we are a large ocean.” The 2016 J-Biz Expo To advance this goal, Mr. Honig announced the OJC’s official launch of the “J-Biz Expo,” an exciting businessto-business conference and networking event, which will take place on June 1, 2016. The J-Biz Expo is the successor to the previous annual “Parnassah Expo,” the largest event of its kind, and takes the highly successful B2B event to yet the next level. J-Biz will be held at the 150,000 square foot New Jersey

Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, and will serve as a one-of-itskind venue with exhibitors of business services for all industries, and a business conference featuring leading business figures and coaches. As in previous years, the expo is expected to draw a diverse range of participants from around the globe. “J-Biz Expo is the perfect place to build your business’s brand, put a face to your business and grow your business in any way, including human resources,” Mr. Honig says. The expo is expected to once again attract thousands of motivated attendees and exhibitors, and help all – at any level – build relationships and find valuable resources. In response to feedback from exhibitors and attendees from previous Parnassah Expos, the J-Biz Expo will include several exciting changes. First off, the date has been set for after Pesach, to make it easier for people to attend and exhibit. Secondly, the previously two day event will now be one day, so that attendees who can only come on one day shouldn’t miss anything. Third, the business conference segment of the expo – featuring world class speakers and workshops – will take place during the morning hours through 1 pm. The B2B networking on the expo floor will only open once the conference is completed, and extend into the early evening hours. With everyone at the same place, at the same time, networking potential is increased manifold. Following Mr. Honig’s presentation, Mr. Raphael Zucker of Somerset Development, which sponsored the

anniversary celebration, congratulated Mr. Honig and the OJC. Mr. Zucker related how much he personally benefited from networking and encouragement from others in the years since he undertook the ambitious Bell Works project, and how OJC is a unique vehicle to offer this power for our entire community. “This is the life force for all of us in the business world,” he said. Noted askan Rabbi Gedaliah Weinberger then addressed the crowd, extolling the virtues of how the OJC and the expo help promote financial success throughout our community. “When everyone comes together,” he said, “there’s nothingklal Yisroel can’t do.” Enthusiastic letters from New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, in honor of the OJC and expo, were read aloud to crowd, highlighting just how powerful and influential are the relationships that the OJC has cultivated on behalf of all of us. Senator Booker wrote, “Through networking opportunities, education, and training, the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce has helped countless entrepreneurs build their own American Dream.” Lieutenant Governor Guadagno wrote, “Tonight’s event is an opportune time not only to recognize the many significant business contributions of New Jersey’s Jewish residents, but also the Chamber’s ability to offer opportunities for networking and development.”

Watching this constant momentum and stream of success stories, is what keeps Mr. Honig going, perfecting project after project. He is particularly excited about the upcoming expo. “More than a ‘B2B’ event, J-Biz Expo is a ‘P2P,’ person to person, harnessing the power of personal relationships for business success,” he says. “Our motto

is, ‘If you aren’t networking, you aren’t working.’” For more information about the OJC, please visit www.ojchamber.com. For more information about J-Biz Expo or to reserve space, visit www.jbizexpo. com

Wheel of Fortune: A Purim Story by Nesanel Yoel Safran

A

big lesson of Purim is that sometimes things that seem bad are really G-d’s hidden ways of giving us something good. In the Megilla, the Purim story, things looked really bad for the Jewish people. Haman, a terrible anti-Semite becomes the king’s prime minister and plans to kill the Jews. Then Esther is forced to leave her home and marry the disgusting and wicked king. But as the story unfolds we see how all these things were really parts of G-d’s hidden plan to bring us great good. We each have our own private ‘Purim stories’ going on in our lives and can take heart that even when things look dark, G-d is really giving us hidden good. In the following story, a kid goes on a ‘Purim trip’, but not the kind he planned. I felt the thud, thud, thud of the flat tire, and I couldn’t believe it. How many things could possibly go wrong for one person in one day? I got down off my bike, whipped the spare inner tube I always carry out of my pack, and got to work. I was upset but not

42

really surprised, because it had just been one of those of days, you know the kind when you get up on the wrong side of the bed and you never find your way back. Actually the day started out really good. I got a call from a couple of buddies and we made up to go into the city and catch the big high-tech expo at the science museum. It was supposed to be amazing. Mr. Shapiro was going to drive us all in his van. The only catch was that we all had to meet at Sam’s house because his father didn’t want to make a hundred stops, and they were leaving exactly at 2:00 whether we there or not. No big deal, I thought. My dad’s really cool about these things and I was sure he wouldn’t mind driving me across town to where Sam lived. Well that was my first mistake. My father felt really bad, but he had an important meeting already lined up then and wasn’t going to be home. It was a problem, but not so bad, since I still had plenty of time to get there by bike. But even that didn’t turn out to be as simple as I thought

because while my bike was securely locked to the lamp post in front of my house, I had no idea where I had left the key! I finally found the key -- in my kid sister’s dollhouse of all places! I was late and had to hurry, but I’m in good shape, so it was doable. I kissed my mom goodbye and took off down the road that would get me straight there the fastest way. The only problem was the road was closed! Just my luck, just that day, they decided to repaint the stripe running down the middle of the road for the first time in years. I was mad, but when the big traffic cop pointed me to take the detour I wasn’t about to argue. It was 1:45 pm, and making it to the van on time was becoming a real long shot. I sped as fast as I could along the winding, bumpy, detour road. Maybe I’d make it after all, I thought. That moment I got the flat. Well between my old leaky hand pump, and the rusty wheel rim, changing the tire took me almost an hour! It was all over. No way would

Sometimes things that seem bad are really G-d’s hidden ways of giving us something good. Sam and the gang still be there. I turned around and started riding home -what else was there to do? Everything was just plain going wrong! I got back to my street and could see my house. Hey, why was my dad’s car back in the driveway -- what happened to his meeting? -- and why were he and my mom were rushing out of the house like that? Then my mom saw me coming, and she and my dad started running fast my way. “Mark! Mark! I can’t believe it. Are you really all right?” I didn’t get it. How did they hear about my flat tire? Mom looked like she’d been crying. I mean I was pretty disappointed about it myself, but it wasn’t SO bad. I tried to calm her down. “It’s okay mom, I just got a flat and missed my ride. It’s just a little bad luck…” She looked at my dad and gave me a big hug. “Bad luck?” my father said. “Mark, do you know what happened?” I shook my head. My mother spoke slowly. “Mark, the van got into an accident.” “What!?” “Your friends were pretty shaken up, but thank G-d they’ll be okay. Everyone else’s parents had heard from their kids already, but when I didn’t hear from you, I…I didn’t know what to think. So your father rushed home from his meeting and we were just on our way to the hospital to look for you. But now I see we’ve had a miracle!” Wow. I was too blown away to even speak. The whole time, all the

MAGAZINE

‘bad luck’ I was having was really just G-d’s way of keeping me out of the accident! You can bet I’m going to pay extra attention when they read the Purim story this year. After all, how many people get to live out the story first hand? Questions Ages 3-5

Q. How did Mark feel at first when he missed the van ride? A. He was upset and thought everything had gone wrong. Q. How did he feel in the end?

A. He felt grateful when he saw how what he had thought was bad luck was really God making him miss the ride so he wouldn’t be in the accident. Ages 6-9

Q.

What do you think Mark learned from what happened that day? A. As he was trying to meet up with his friends and ran into so many obstacles he had viewed what was happening as something negative. He learned that negative things can really turn out for the good and saw how G-d was taking care of him and helping him live out his own private Purim miracle.

Q. Should we ever get upset when things go wrong? A.

Although it’s hard not to, we

should at least try to also remember that deep down what’s happening is just a Purim story with a happy ending that some day in some way we’ll be able to see. Ages ten and up

Q. Which kind of a miracle do you think is greater, one that is obvious to see or one that is disguised to look like coincidence or ‘luck’? A. The first kind is certainly more dramatic, but really the hidden sort of miracle is even deeper, because when we have one we can use it to remind us that G-d is with us in our everyday lives and become inspired to be better and more spiritual people. Q. Even though Mark was saved from the accident, his friends were not. Why didn’t something good happen to them too? A. Sometimes the good in the events of people’s live is not readily apparent. In the case of Mark’s friends, the good was hidden even deeper than it was with him. Perhaps something even worse would have happened to them later if G-d hadn’t let them get into the minor accident, or perhaps the experience will lead them to make big positive changes in their lives. We can never know for sure what, or why but we can trust and know that nothing falls outside of G-d’s custom-made plan for each of us, and everything will ultimately turn out to be for our eternal good.

supermarket secrets Like a Kid in a Candy Store A Purim Guide Simmy Horowitz

T

he approach of Purim brings to mind leibedig seudos with merriment and singing, mishloach manos deliveries in costume and makeup, megillah leining with graggers and excitement. Oh, and nosh. So much nosh. Somehow, even after so many years of excitedly packaging up special treats for friends and family, our mishloach manos can be a challenge. The foods and candies must fit specific criteria: easy to pack, durable, easy on the budget, and of course, delicious! This week, we set out to find the most mishloach manos-worthy candies that you are sure to want to include in your mitzvos hayom.

The award for durability goes to…

Our poor candy can really take a beating on Purim day. First, it’s packed, crammed, or dumped into a box, then it suffers through the treachery of child-delivered walks to the neighbor, then it is hastily grabbed, assessed, and sorted by eager and willing hands (more children here). Poured fondant petals with crystallized sugar embellishments need not apply. What are some other choices to avoid? Mr. Yaakov Neiman, owner of the new Sweitzer Candy Shop, notes, “Although Purim won’t be that hot, candies can melt when they sit in a warm car all day with the sun shining on them. Anything with a sugar coating or a sour sugar coating might melt and stick to each other; the same goes for taffies or other sticky candies.” For options that will hold up, Neiman recommends jelly beans, Jordan almonds, regular gummy bears (as opposed to sour coated), and any kind of nuts. 4

50

Shopping List THE

Licorice, gumballs, and hard candies, such as lollipops and sucking candies, are other choices that will go the distance.

The figure factor

Sticker shock does not only occur when you’re shopping for cars. Sometimes, the figure on the register at the end of the mass candy purchase can be quite the surprise, especially if you have a long list of mishloach manos recipients. One of the more cost-efficient candy purchases is the ever-popular marshmallows, which are inexpensive and also large, so they will take up a lot of room in your package. Lollipops, taffies, and taffy pops are also affordable choices, as are hard candies. Of course, check your supermarket’s sale section for money-saving deals being offered as you shop. Make sure to have the total price of expenditures in mind as you compare prices. It might seem cheaper to buy a two-pound bag of gummy cherries and divide them up yourself, as opposed to an individually wrapped product, such as a ring lollipop, but if you will be spending a lot on pretty pouches to package the gummies, it’s not such a deal.

Color coordination consideration

Some costumes lend themselves to great mishloach manos (Curious George and a banana? Too cute!), while others leave you thinking…maybe I’ll just color coordinate them this year.

SHOPPING LIST | SUPERMARKET SECRETS Neiman offers up two easy ideas for color-themed packages: “Jelly beans and Jordan almonds.” There are also a wide variety of gumballs in every shade under the sun, as well as taffies, and pretty candy sticks that come with twisting stripes in multiple hues. If you’re in the mood to self-sort, candy coated chocolates, fruit-flavored jelly candies (such as Mike & Ikes), and button candy can be separated and repackaged to fit your color scheme.

It’s all about popular

In case you’re not keeping up to date with the latest trends in the candy world (we’re not either), Neiman lets us in on this year’s must-haves. “There is a vanilla taffy with a real peanut butter center that people love and a brand new product, a beautiful, swirled red and white gummy bear that tastes like strawberries and cream. They’re both delicious.” As the world grows more health-conscious, there is also an increasing line of kosher organic, dairy- and soy-free chocolates that are relatively healthy as compared to their other chocolate-y cousins. These “healthy” chocolates omit artificial coloring, flavoring, and sweeteners and are processed as little as possible to retain the natural benefits of dark chocolate. They also occasionally contain other healthful ingredients such as brown rice in a crispy chocolate bar or fresh roasted almonds in a nut option.

Million-dollar mishloach manos

No matter which candies you choose to put inside, most storeowners agree that the right packaging can transform your goodies from simply yum to stunningly special. With a beautiful overall presentation, a fancy bow on top or a touch of something personal, even the cheapest, most uncoordinated candy can come together to achieve a “wow” effect.

Make it yourself: homemade candy treats Some people would rather not visit the dentist, but for those who love it, there’s nothing like making and giving out your own homemade treats. For a twist on the usual candies, try your hand at these at-home goodies – and then pack them up before they disappear!

Chocolate Bark

This can be made with a wide variety of toppings and fillings. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and spread your add-ins evenly over the sheet. Add-ins can include chopped nuts, small candies, shredded coconut, peanut brittle, chopped cookies or more; whatever your heart desires! Melt your choice of chocolate in the microwave, removing every 30 seconds and stirring until smooth and completely melted. Pour melted chocolate over parchment paper and level with the back of a spoon. Allow to harden, then break into small, uneven pieces.

Truffle Balls

Mix together 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 3 cups of confectioners’ sugar, 3 cups of melted chocolate chips, and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla. Refrigerate for one hour, then roll into one-inch balls. This can then be rolled in ground nuts, shredded coconut, melted chocolate, or sprinkles.

Sea Salt Caramels

In a saucepan, melt 1 1/2 sticks of butter and 1/2 cup sugar. Add 3 tablespoons of light corn syrup and 14 ounces of sweetened, condensed milk. Bring mixture to a boil, then allow to simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly and watching for a deepening in color. Pour caramel into an 8x8” pan and allow to cool, then cut into small squares. Sprinkle with a small amount of coarsely ground sea salt. Credits: Allrecipes.com. and Lecremedelacrumb. com.

PURIM IN A JAR By. Gitta Bixenspanner n.d.

P

urim is almost upon us and every year we run around trying to find the perfect Mishloach monos to send our neighbors and friends. When I was growing up Mishloach Monos was basically the same every year. Some delicious Hungarian pastries on a nice (albeit plain) paper plate, wrapped in cellophane paper tied with a colorful ribbon. My mother would buy a couple dozen roses and that was her special added touch. It was a labor of love, prepared and delivered with excitement by us children. Today many feel that they have to outdo themselves come up with themes with matching outfits for

60

the children. Gone are the Purim box oldies saved from year to year. Nowadays every year Mishloach Monos are more exquisite and for many a costly headache. Here are some bright and healthy ideas for this year’s Mishloach Monos. The Mason jar is a very versatile container that can be filled with an endless variety. The main idea of Purim Mishloach monos is to allow the receiver to consume it on that day. Very often the lady of the house is so busy with the myriad obligations of the day that she has not got the time to sit down to a meal. What better way to accomplish this than by sending a meal in a jar ready for immediate consumption.

The beauty of this idea is that it can be prepared ahead as vegetable or fruit salads can be cut 2-3days in advance and put in separate containers and kept in the refrigerator until the day prior. I would suggest a set of two or three containers, one with salad, a smaller one with fruits and an even smaller one with a cake or pudding dessert. Your imagination is the limit. Cookies, candies, variety of nuts and chocolates can also be beautifully presented in a jar; since there should be two species meaning two types of blessings in the mix these suggestions would conform to the obligation of two types of foods required. Here are suggestions for a few fillings for the mason jars.

for the fruit salad and even smaller jar for the cake/pudding dessert or candies. You could choose larger containers when sending to a family. Adjust containers and ingredients to your needs. Instructions 1. Salad dressing: Pour 2 tablespoons of your favorite salad dressing in the bottom of the jar. Adjust the amount of dressing depending on the size of the salad you are making and your personal preference. Since the dressing is at the bottom of the jar it will not cause the salad to become soggy. 2. Raw hard vegetables: Next, add any hard chopped vegetables you’re including in your salad, like carrots, cucumbers, red and green peppers, red onions and olives. 3. Cooked vegetables: next add any cooked vegetables you have prepared 4. Nuts, seeds, and croutons: Next, add any nuts or seeds, like almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and croutons

Salad in a jar How to Pack the Perfect Salad in a Jar Generally you need to calculate how many jar Mishloach monos you want to send. Ideally take a few deep plates so you can prepare each ingredient for your salads in a separate bowl and pack them according to the instructions. Ingredients 2 Tbs of your favorite salad dressing choose mayonnaise or techina with a somewhat thick consistency Raw vegetables such as cucumbers, colored peppers, sliced red onions, ol-

ives, and grated carrots. Cooked vegetables, such as corn, string beans, asparagus, and beets. Nuts, sunflower seeds, sliced almonds and /or croutons Salad greens Equipment Wide-mouth jars or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. I saw some nice plastic containers in various sizes in our dollar store. 1 pound jars for salads, 1/2 lb container

5. Salad greens: Last but not least, fill the rest of the jar with salad greens. Use your hands to tear them into bite-sized pieces. It’s fine to pack them into the jar fairly compactly. 6. Storing the salad: Screw the lid on the jar and refrigerate for up to 3 days. 7. Tossing and eating the salad: Advise your recipients. When ready to eat, unscrew the lid and shake the salad into the bowl. The action of shaking the salad into the bowl is usually enough to mix the salad with the dressing. If not, toss gently with a fork until coated. 8. Wrap some fancy ribbon around your jar and insert a fork to allow for immediate consumption.

Fruit salad in a jar Similarly you can cube some fruits such as pineapple melons or mangoes. Wash grapes and blueberries. Seed pomegranates Put each fruit in a separate bowl and layer them in pretty color combinations. Cover and keep refrigerated up to three days. Liquor in the Jar Chocolate Cake

C

ake in a jar are extremely popular they were served at many parties and special occasions. Purim is all about being merry and having some fun it is even considered meritorious to drink until tipsy, so why not incorporate some liquor into our dessert cake. This can be served as afters for your Purim seudah (festive meal). This cake is a great pairing of chocolate and whiskey. It’s also a very moist cake because it’s flourless, which in addition makes it gluten free. If you’ve never had flourless cake before you are in for a treat. It’s a mushy, fudgy, cake-like decadence with a paper thin crispy crust. Need we say more? This recipe has a simple cream frosting spiked with a little

s e i g e t a r t S e c n a l a B d n to Fi If you think going to the gym is a guilty pleasure, read this article. Balancing marriage, parenting, work, and life responsibilities can feel like a high-wire act. Our children need us, our spouses expect us to be there for them, and then there are parents, jobs, financial pressures and daily obligations pulling at us all at the same time. This does not even begin to address our desire to take care of ourselves. Carving personal time out for a gym class or quiet cappuccino in a coffee shop seems as if we are seeking guilty pleasures. Some nights we lie awake thinking to ourselves that nobody in this family is happy because each person believes I am there more for the others – and this includes ourselves. Here are five strategies for successfully juggling our relationships and commitments: 1. Take Care of Yourself In case of an emergency on a plane you must first place the oxygen mask over yourself and only then can you begin to take care of your children. If you are not breathing you are of no help to anyone else. If you feel as if you are choking, your family will feel it. Begin by taking care of yourself. Be committed to your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. Make a plan and set real goals. Stop overlooking yourself. This is not selfish and selfcentered; it is not a guilty pleasure. Look at it instead as giving your family the greatest gift possible: The gift of a joyful ‘you’. 2. Acknowledge the Challenge When we feel pressured we snap at the people in our lives. Family and friends become the most convenient targets. As we push loved ones away, a cycle begins where we start to feel

76

isolated and alone. Our relationships suffer. Those closest to us who can help us find calm in the storm grow distant. Instead of getting angry at our partners, set aside time to speak together in a calm moment. Concentrate on your tone and body language. Be careful not to speak impatiently or seem standoffish. Say, “I feel like I’m in a pressure cooker right now. I realize that I may seem snappy and moody. I am feeling overwhelmed. And while it’s not an excuse, it is something that is making me act out. I am in a bad spot and now I want to work on solutions.” Show that you are recognizing the problem instead of living as if this is your normal. 3. Anticipate and Plan Often our feelings of being overwhelmed come from being stuck in the same difficult situation time and time again. The kids are coming home from school all at the same time, mornings are out of control, your spouse is having a hard time in the office and walks through the door in a grumpy mood. And these challenges occur each and every day. The real surprise is why are you once again caught unaware? If you can anticipate that the mornings will be stressful, you can tell yourself that you know what’s coming. Understanding that your stressed partner needs time to unwind before interacting with you prevents you from getting bent out of shape each night. You will feel prepared instead of off-kilter. Anticipation also helps you find solutions. You can work on a doable plan instead of throwing up your hands and feeling as if this is just not possible. If you envision that nighttime is chaotic and the house will be noisy when you return home after a hard day, you are less likely to lose it because you know what to expect the moment you walk through the door. And you can

be realistic and set practical ways to find evening balance instead of exploding. 4. Find Your Positive Energy Some of us live life in the positive lane while others only hear negative voices. The choice is yours. When we ‘awfulize’ our situation, nothing seems good. We easily fall into an overwhelming feeling of discontent. Our minds fill with the worst case scenario. Even the smallest difficulties loom large and we don’t think we will manage. Here are some negative self-talks to try and stay away from: “My life is crazy.” “Nothing ever goes right for me.” “I’ll never be able to fix this mess.” “I hate my life.” When you have a cd playing in your head that makes you feel as if you are living a miserable life, you lose the positive force that lies within. Solutions become difficult to come by. Life seems dark. Joy is a distant dream that remains unattainable. The happiest people I know are the most positive. But living with a positive eye takes work. When you begin to find yourself traveling in the negative lane be conscious of what is happening. Counter the negative thought with a more confident one. 5. List Your Priorities and Goals We spend too much time busying ourselves with meaningless activities that strip us of a sense of balance in our day. Surfing the net, checking Instagram, playing candy crush, senseless texting are all ways we find ourselves wasting hours. We don’t begin to realize how precious our time in this world is. We take opportunities with family for granted. Instead of interacting with loved ones, we forget how to cherish the simplest moments. Of course we feel unbalanced. There is too much emotional clutter clouding our lives. It is time to get organized and rid ourselves of the mindless acts that prevent us from living each day to the max. Begin by thinking about your priorities. List your most important goals. How much time do you spend that reflects your values? And how much time is wasted; making you feel as if you don’t have enough hours in the day? Seeking balance while working on solutions will help us live with a positive spirit, feeling energized and better able to handle life’s challenges.

5 The Rambam & Modern Science

T

By S. Pruzansky

he world of health and nutrition is regularly inundated with new research, findings, and theories. And while many of these beliefs are turned on their heads not soon after they’ve been “discovered,” there are just as many that withstand the tests of time and ring as true today as they did years ago. But there are those whose words of wisdom stand in a class of their own. Perhaps one of the most renowned physicians of all times, the Rambam’s writings on health and nutrition are quoted often. And while we need no proof that all the Rambam wrote is brilliant and true, it is fascinating to find modern science and nutrition finally catching up to what he penned thousands of years ago. There are tens of examples; in this week’s column we explore five pieces of the Rambam’s advice, all from Hilchos De’os, with contemporary research that echoes his timeless words.

120

your town. your news. your voice.

DATE, 2016

1

2

Rambam: “One should drink only a small amount of water during the meal, and mix that with wine. When the food begins to be digested in his intestines, he may drink what is necessary” (De’os, 4:2).

Mindful eating Rambam: “A person should never eat unless he is hungry, nor drink unless thirsty” (De’os, 4:1).

Modern science: “Drinking too much water during meals can interfere with the natural and necessary levels of bile and stomach acid” (Boston.com).

Modern science: “You should aim to eat when hungry” (dietdoctor.com). What sounds like pretty simple advice has only recently been picked up by the general dieting community. This sentiment is duplicated in thousands of diet books and touted by thousands of nutritionists. And indeed, if we were only able to muster enough self-control to actually follow through with it, these same nutritionists may very well be out of business!

3

Drinking

While opinions about ingesting water during meals abound, most studies agree that too much water – particularly cold water – can seriously interfere with digestion and lead to cramping and other discomforts. As for wine, the alcohol and antioxidants it contains have long been touted as heart-healthy and cancer-preventing (Mayoclinic.org).

Daily exercise Rambam: “The rule is that he should engage his body and exert himself in a sweat-producing task each morning” (De’os, 4:2). Modern science: “Daily physical activity is required to reduce the risk of chronic disease in adulthood” (Department of Health and Human Services).

We all know that working out does wonders for our health. For best results, make it a daily thing!

4

Eight-hour nights Rambam: “Together, day and night make up twenty-four hours. It is sufficient for a man to sleep a third of this period; i.e., eight hours” (De’os, 4:4).

5

Honey smarts Rambam: “Honey and wine are harmful to the young and wholesome for the old” (De’os, 4:12).

Modern science: “People who sleep more than eight hours a day have an increased risk of stroke” (Study, University of Cambridge).

Modern science: “Avoid giving honey – even a tiny taste – to babies under the age of one year” (mayoclinic.org).

While we don’t need any studies or research to tell us why not getting enough shut-eye can be harmful to our health (especially if we need seven coffees to make it through the day), did you know that sleeping too much can also be bad for you? The Rambam writes to this effect, and as recently as one year ago, the University of Cambridge came to the same conclusion. If you can fit a luxurious eight hours of blessed slumber into your daily schedule, that’s amazing. Just don’t overdo it!

It’s been part of the pediatrician’s list of foods to keep away from baby for decades. While botulism – the disease that can potentially be caused from exposure to honey spores – is quite rare, it is also critical and can even be fatal. But this isn’t news to us. It’s sound medical advice given thousands of years ago. Sweet!

Hundreds of Survivors and their Families Attend Kleinman Holocaust Education Center Exhibition in Williamsburg Attendees Recognize Themselves, Friends, and Family Members Among the Documents and Pictures Exhibited

O

n Monday, March 7th, the Kleinman Holocaust Education Center (KHEC) curated an exhibit featuring pieces from its extensive collection of Holocaust-related artifacts for the Seniors and Holocaust Survivors Women’s Event hosted by the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn (UJO). East Williamsburg is home to the largest community of Hungarian Chasidic survivors of the Holocaust in the United States. The KHEC curated the e x h i b i t i o n specifically for this event and included Yiddish captions for the audience. The exhibition was divided into three sections: religious life during the pre-war era, the Holocaust, and the early postwar period in Europe and New York. The pre-war displays included original documents such as an Erev Shabbos schedule in the city of Munkatch from 1922 and a 1933 Bais Yaakov diploma signed by Sara Schenirer. The Holocaust display highlighted the mesiras nefesh even in the concentration camps and included artifacts such as a mishnayos that Rabbi Moshe Neuschloss smuggled into Auschwitz. The post-war displays included the Chevra Kadisha book from Bergen Belsen, a child’s baby tunic sewn in the Heidenheim Displaced

Persons camp, and survivors’ school memorabilia after their arrival in New York. A huge crowd of approximately 500 survivors and their families attended the event along with United States Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez, New York State Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, and Ms. Deb Kram, Client

Outreach Manager of the Claims Conference. This was the first exhibition of its kind to be held in Williamsburg. Some of the most poignant moments were when many of the attendees found themselves looking not only at historical artifacts from the Holocaust, but also at their own personal history. Several found pictures and documentation of their own families, or from their old schools and towns. One survivor, Mrs. Paula Weiss, was overwhelmed to find a photo not only of herself but also of her sister, Mrs. Eva Raden. In a subsequent email exchange, Mrs. Raden wrote, “It is amazing to see me at twelve years old

after the war…Thank you for bringing back a precious memory.” Representative Velázquez spoke about these encounters: “I was deeply moved by the exhibition that the Kleinman Holocaust Education Center put together for this event. Walking around and witnessing survivors connecting with the artifacts—like a school photo of a former teacher, a picture from a friend’s wedding at a Displaced Persons camp, and even their own orphan identification photo—was both poignant and uplifting.” New York State Assemblyman Joseph Lentol was impressed with the exhibition. He noted: “People of faith suffered immensely during the Holocaust, but then they experienced a tremendous rebirth in this country—with their faith intact. The Kleinman Holocaust Education Center’s exhibition illustrated through artifacts, photographs, and original documents both the terrifying years of the Holocaust and the new beginning so many survivors found in Williamsburg.” The KHEC has amassed an extraordinary collection of religious Holocaust artifacts over the past five years, thanks in part to the hard work of Meryl Maybruch, acquisitions curator at the KHEC. Mrs. Maybruch travels throughout the tristate area to meet with survivors and their families to discuss the importance of preserving
