Responding to Holocaust Denial by Reuven Lewis, M.Ed
R
ecently, 8th grade students in a school district in California were asked to decide, based on information given to them by their teacher, if the Holocaust happened or if it was a ‘scheme for monetary gain.’ Rabbi Yaakov Salomon called this “blatant anti-Semitism, coming in the Rialto school system whose superintendent is Mohammed Z. Islam.” How do we as a Jews respond? I submit to you thoughtful readers that educating our own community and the world about what really happened a mere 75 years ago is the best approach. We have a duty to teach the world, an obligation that has become even more acute with the release of ADL’s new survey on global anti-Semitism that reveals that almost half of the world’s adults never heard of the Holocaust and over a quarter hold anti-Semitic views.
There is no simple way to begin to grasp the enormity of 6,000,000 innocent Jews being murdered by the Nazis just because they had Jewish parents. But one man’s account may be a start. Eugene Heimler is a remarkable man who survived AuschwitzBirkenau, Buchenwald, Tröglitz and Berga-Elster, and lived to be an eloquent witness to the world and write about this unimaginable horror. Heimler became a psychiatric social worker and therapist and developed a model for overcoming trauma based on his experiences in the camps. He wrote about his experiences with a poet’s sensitivity and realness. Responding to Holocaust DenialEugene Heimler’s book, Night of the Mist is a heart wrenching classic; it is the best way I have found of getting through to the current generation who think of 1940 as ancient history.

One incident will hopefully be enough to confirm the realness of this tragic time for the world: And while all this flashed through me, someone leaned towards me and whispered in my ear the same words I had heard from the apparition that morning: ‘After the roll-call get away from Barrack No. 17. Danger….’ The SS officer was now standing in front of me. I felt that even the wind had stopped blowing… He looked at me, and as if mesmerized I looked back deep into his eyes. I do not know how long we were staring at one another. I do not know how long he stood before me. A harsh shout brought me back to my senses. The ‘Appel’ was over. People were slowly dispersing. I knew that something was about to happen, that I had to do something. Halfconscious, I stumbled towards the electrified fence. A long ditch ran between the

electric fence and the back entrance of the barracks. If someone could no longer bear his dreadful existence and deliberately touched the live wire or chanced to rush against it in a fit of nerves, his body, struck dead in an instant, fell into the ditch and lay there until the “Sonderkommando’ came to take it to the crematorium. It was in this ditch that I took refuge after the Appel was over. Feigning death, I lay there motionless. Yet I did not understand myself why I did so: some unknown power seemed to have benumbed my senses, holding my thoughts and movements in suspension. I had been lying there for a long time, watched only by the glassy stare of several corpses, when suddenly I became aware of a loud rumbling. Till then I seemed to have been in a coma, but this noise brought me back to full consciousness. I recognized it immediately – SS lorries were rolling into the camp. Almost at once they pulled up sharply before Barrack No. 17. The night was dark; only the headlamps of the lorries lit the scene. I held my breath and listened. Curt words of command were clearly audible. I knew what they meant: no one might leave the barracks. With rifle butts, whips and bare fists they goaded my comrades from the barrack into the lorries. Now and again a shot echoed through the night. The minutes seemed endlessly long. Suddenly I sensed that someone was approaching the ditch. “Well, what are we to do with these carcasses?” I could recognize the SS soldier by his voice as he addressed his companion. I did not dare to move my head or to look up out of the ditch. I lay there, my arms spread like the other dead bodies. His torch wavered over the corpses. “Look, that one’s still moving,” he yelled. “He’s moving, the stinking carcass.” Cold sweat broke out all over me. I knew that his machine-gun would be trained towards the ditch. I longed to cry out “No, not this way – I don’t want to die like this.” But I was paralyzed. A single shot rang out, followed by a
dull groan, then quiet again. He must have finished off someone not yet quite dead – perhaps one of those who had been thrown into the ditch in the

We have a duty to educate the world. Here is one survivor’s harrowing story afternoon after having been nearly beaten to death. Minutes passed. Then the steps receded. They would probably make a special trip for the corpses in the ditch later on. It was only now that I became aware of the screams and cries that filled the night. One after the other the lorries started off, loaded with human cargo for their fiery destination. The
whispered stories that I had heard from the older prisoners about the gas chambers now hit me with dreadful reality. It seemed to be true after all – a thing which even here had seemed unbelievable. Slowly I lifted up my head as the last of the lorries was passing through the camp gates with its wailing load. Barrack No. 17 gaped wide open in terrible emptiness. I had to get away from it, forget I ever belonged to it, get into some other barrack. “Away, away from here…Quickly, quickly…” On all fours I began to crawl along the ditch. I knocked into dead bodies – I climbed over them. My hands were smeared with their blood. From Night of the Mist, pages 4243. If after reading this blood curdling vivid depiction of one day in a concentration camp, anyone could deny the experience of millions of tortured souls, their hearts and souls must be made of stone. But despite his unfathomable pain, Eugene Heimler did not become a bitter man. After much internal struggle he moved to England, became a therapist and started helping others overcome their trauma. With unbelievable courage, he even went back to Germany to work with the children of his torturers and began to create healing. For anyone who wants to become educated about the Holocaust and healing from its wounds, I highly recommend three of Heimler’s books, Night of the Mist, A Link in the Chain – A Journey from Auschwitz to Resurrection and Messages – A Survivor’s Letter to a Young German. They are all newly published and information can be found on the Heimler website http://www. newholocaustliterature.com/ As Jews it is our responsibility to be a light unto the Nations and to heal the world in the Image of God. Let us use this opportunity in time to educate ourselves and the world about healing and overcoming the obstacles that stand between us.

Jews, Non-Jews & Weight Loss Losing 50 pounds was exciting. Keeping it off is murder. by Mark Schiff
A
little more than 4 years ago, I was walking on Cashio Street and I dropped something on the ground. When I bent down to get it, let’s just say, it wasn’t easy to get back up. I was almost 200 pounds with a big puffy face. I was really starting to feel old. A day or two later, as I was being introduced to go on stage, Dom Irrera, a comedian friend, said to me “Look how fat you are.” And then, soon after that, I was with another friend when he pointed to an old guy with a walker crossing a street and said, “We don’t want to end up like that.” Ok message received…lose weight. So the next day, I decided to crawl out of my fat suit and do something about it. It took a year, but I lost 50 pounds and have kept those 50 pounds off for over four years. Losing the weight was not hard. It was exciting. But keeping it off is murder. I now exercise seven days a week. That’s good but the food is where it’s at. I have been an overeater
my whole life, still am and will always be. I remember when I was three months old and my mother screaming at me “Enough already. Don’t you ever stop eating?” My problem is I’m never full. I could eat a fifteen-course dinner and then on the way home, stop for popcorn and pie a la mode. I have an empty space inside me that is very demanding and never satisfied. In order to lose the weight and keep it off, I had to do just one little thing and that is to change just about everything. For me that means not eating things I used to enjoy and not having them ever again. And doing this one-day at a time. I don’t eat pizza, pasta, bread (except on Shabbat) and my dessert is fruit (no more cakes or cookies). To the best of my ability, I’ve given up all sugar. My diet now is whole food, and plant based. I recently talked to my Rabbi to see if he could somehow get rid of the 7000 calorie a day holidays like Passover, Sukkot and Shavuot. They can be killers for a

person like me. As I was losing the weight a funny thing happened. I noticed that my losing weight bothered my Jewish friends more than my non-Jewish friends. Jews get very worried when you lose weight. They all think that they are doctors and diagnosticians. They say things like “Are you ok?” “Why did you lose the weight?” “Did you want to lose the weight?” On the other hand, when my non-Jewish friends would see me, I’d hear, “You look great!” “How’d you do it?” “Bet you feel terrific?” “Want to go to the rodeo?” A few of my Jewish friends called my wife to try and pry out of her how long I had to live. Sometimes they would walk up to me in the street and scream “enough already.” “Stop it.” “Don’t lose any more weight.” The crème de la crème was when I was in Glatt Mart Supermarket and this woman I know looked at me, turned white and started running away. quickly caught up with her and asked if she was all right. She was trembling right there in the middle of the store. She told me she had heard I was very sick and that I had died. And she always liked me and was very sad to get the news of my death. I thanked her for her kind words, told her I was all right and went back to eat some free grapes. About an hour later, I thought if she liked me so much how come she didn’t even come to my funeral? Fooey on her. A few months later, I was visiting my 85-year-old aunt and she offered me a piece of cake. I said, “I don’t eat cake.” She said, “Life is not worth living without cake.” I guess if I was married to my Uncle Louie like she was, I might feel the same. One rabbi, who wanted to lose weight called and asked me to meet him and tell him how he could also lose weight. I said, “Where do you want to meet to talk?” He said Schwartz’s Bakery. Keeping the weight off is a daily fight. It’s by far is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Everyday I am on the battlefield trying to stay alive. To my Jewish friends, I know you mean well. And when I do die one day while eating a bowl of broccoli, you can all have your laugh. What I’ve come to understand is that all the foods that I thought I could not live without, I hardly ever miss. And as I get older, I realized that almost everything in life is overrated anyway. Keeping weight off is a full time job. My paycheck is getting my health back and wearing my kids’ clothes.

5 Common Parenting Mistakes Becoming an even better parent starts right here. by Slovie Jungreis-Wolff
H
ere are five of the most common mistakes parents make. With more awareness, we can work on avoiding them. 1. Bubble-Wrapping Kids Children require independence to flourish. They need to write and rewrite reports, stay up studying and use their time wisely, work on science projects, and earn their A’s and B’s. The moments they fail a test, strike out in a baseball game, don’t get the part in the production or are unhappy with the class they were placed in are opportunities for growth. It’s okay for them to struggle, figure out how to do better next time and open hearts to people they’d never normally sit with at the lunch table in school. Children need to fall in order to learn how to get up and stand on their own two feet. We can’t protect them from pain, disappointment and rejection. The more we try the less they can handle. They need to learn how to cope. Self-esteem comes from discovering their inner strengths and
knowing that “I can do this”, “I will not fall apart.” 2. Weak Discipline All children require discipline to understand standards of behavior and learn self-control, especially today. But we make the mistake of believing that discipline means punishment and negativity. Some parents are afraid that saying ‘no’ will push children away. Not true. Good discipline means that I don’t wait for the problems to arise. Instead I have created a bond with my kids, we communicate well, I am present, they know what is expected and accepted. When they run off course (all children will at some time make mistakes or test us), I do not ignore the problem, yell, become overly emotional, hit, or put my children down. Instead I use natural and clear consequences, remain calm but strong, take the time to listen, and teach my children to take responsibility for their actions. I approach the relationship with a positive spirit and try my best to be present in my children’s lives to show that I care.

Problems occur if kids see that we don’t carry through, are not serious about our standards, are inconsistent, or believe that screaming means discipline. Too many times we say ‘no’ but convey ‘maybe’ or ‘I’m not sure,’ which breeds confusion. They read our hesitation and pounce on our doubt. If I believe in myself, am consistent, clear, stand firm in my parenting standards, and balance discipline with loving times spent together, my ability to discipline becomes strengthened. 3. Fearing Unhappiness What do you want for your children? The most common response I get to this question is: “I just want them to be happy.” If this is your reply, it becomes easy to fall into the “happiness trap.” We keep buying, look away at bad behavior, overindulge and go against our better judgment all in the name of happiness. We confuse the idea of loving children with constantly doing for them and making them happy. Happy children is not our ultimate parenting goal. Good character,

grit, resilience, sensitivity, honesty, respect, strong work ethics, and high values are all part of our mission. There will be times that our children will be unhappy despite our best intentions. They will get upset with our decisions. But sometimes the answer is no. As hard as we try we will encounter their tears. This does not mean that we are bad parents. It means we are doing our job and teaching our children that they can’t always have everything they want. Life holds disappointments. Growing desperate for approval and children’s smiles denies us the power to parent with purpose. 4. Peter Pan Parenting Children need role models. Where should they learn responsibility, spirituality, compassion, respect and priorities if not from their parents? Sadly, there are mothers and
fathers who don’t want to grow up. They still want to dress, drink, party, speak and act like they did before having children. Responsibilities feel choking, hindering their freedom. Life does not feel fun anymore. Like Peter Pan, they want to remain in Neverland. With parenting comes responsibility. We are not our children’s BFF’s. We cannot expect more from our kids than we expect from ourselves. 5. Forgetting to Show Love as Kids Grow It’s easy to show love to an infant. We cuddle, kiss, hug and sing lullabies. They climb on our laps and we wipe away their tears. But what happens as they grow? We give orders more and show love less. We forget to say “I love you.” We don’t connect as easily. They are in their world and we in ours. We
get lost in our phones, Instagram and daily pressures. We stop laughing and sharing conversation. Talks are usually reserved for misbehavior, admonishment, and asking if they took a shower and did their homework. We realize too late that we’ve left words unsaid and wonder how many more hugs and kisses could have been given to nourish a hungry soul. Decide today that no matter how busy you are or complicated life has gotten, you will not allow another day to go by without communicating love to each child. Children are a precious gift. Let’s take the time to cultivate souls, nourish hearts, build character and create a path for the next generation. Believe in yourself as a parent. What an incredible mission we have.

FBL Week #8 Recap Junior Division Rami’s Pizza33 Jewish Connection- 22: In a close game between the #2 seed and #3 seed, Chaim Tzvi Guttman was on fire together with Mutty Izsak scoring 12 and 14 respectively for Rami’s. Efraim Obermeister’s 13 points and Yitzi Ponzak’s 10 tried to help pick up the pieces to no avail. Oh Baby -24 5 Towns Jewish Times- 18: Oh Baby continues to show their true abilities as they win game in and game out, (besides for that 1 loss a few weeks ago). In this game, Jonathan Tzubary and Dovid Senderovitz were the factors that helped Oh Baby gain yet another win. Yossi Harar made a valiant effort to try and give his 5TJT gang another win; however, his 14 points were not enough.Look for Oh Baby and Rami`s in the Championship Game in a couple of weeks. Intermediate Division Buzz Magazine shocked China Glatt as star player Leiby Leibowitz was not in attendance for China. Yitzchok Devor was on fire scoring

week. Batampte Pickles 61 Horsepower Electric 43- As Howies Batampte has been struggling ever since their star Shimon Greenwald has been out with an injury, they were able to win this one in amazing fashion. The Ponzak brothers scored 38 points collectively for Batampte as Mordechai Lebovits
also helped out with 10. Yitzi Waxman and Shaya Lichtfield tried to stop the damage, as they scored 18 and 10 for Horsepower. Too little too late.David where are you?? Senior Division Visual Image 47 Pizza Nosh 36- Tzvi Baruch (14 points) and Co. were able to hold off Pizza Nosh in this close game. Although at halftime the score was 22-8 Visual Image, they were able to catch up and close in the gap. Pizza Nosh was able to have all their players in the scoring column; however, their points did not match a stronger Visual Image team. We are expecting a visit from Neil Sombrowsky at this years Championship Game. ITP 53 Plaza Auto Leasing 45Mendy Schiffenbauer was to his usual scoring 17 points together with Zevi Tepper’s 14. They were able to hold off a strong PAL as Naftali Waldman scored 19 without a blink. The game was close, but not close enough for PAL. ITP is now 8-0. Donny did you hear that ??? ITP is 8-0.

Gluten Free Recipes There’s no reason to compromise on taste with these delicious recipes. by Aviva Kanoff
Grilled Chicken with Spicy Mango Salsa ½ tsp. garlic powder salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Chicken: 2 tbsp. honey 2 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary or ¾ tsp. crushed dried rosemary 2 tsp. ground cumin 1 ½ tsp. paprika 1/8 tsp. garlic powder 1/8 tsp. onion powder salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 12 oz. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips 2 tbsp. olive oil Spicy Mango Salsa: 3 ripe but firm mangos, peeled and diced (if closer to green that’s okay too) ¼ cup lime juice ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro 4 scallions, diced 1 small jalapeño, deseeded, stemmed, and minced 1 tsp. ground cumin
1. In a large bowl, combine honey and all seasonings for the chicken. 2. Coat chicken strips lightly in oil. Rub spice mixture onto both sides of chicken strips and return chicken to bowl. 3. Refrigerate chicken for at least 30 minutes to absorb flavors. 4. While chicken is marinating, prepare the salsa by mixing all ingredients in a bowl. 5. To cook the chicken, you can either grill the strips over high heat for about 15 minutes, flipping frequently, or panfry them over medium heat for about 5 minutes per side. 6. Once cooked, let chicken sit for 1-2 minutes to allow juices to spread, then serve warm with salsa.
