Keeping the Kavanah in Tefillah

M

e e t i n g Chazzan Tzvi Lieder was such a wonderful breath of fresh air! A Chazzan as his career choice, he brings back the true purpose of Chazzanim and a reality check on what is important in life. I did not know what to expect when I heard that he was a Chazzan who has traveled the world and given amazing concerts. I expected an arrogant man. However the man who answered me on the other line was nothing sheer of an amazing example of a legit pious, humble mentsch of a Jew! Just speaking with him made

Judaism feel real and organic to me. I learned from him that being a Chazzan is not just an appointed position for one to gloat about. Instead, being a Chazzan is a special responsibility whose primary purpose is to guide the davening of congregants in the right direction. After my interview with this man I literally had to take a few moments to collect myself. Tzvi Lieder was born in the holy land, Israel in the great city of Jerusalem. He comes from an amazing line of great rabbis on both his mother’s and father’s side. He is a great grandson of Rabbi Baruch Ber Leibowitz, a very famous rabbi. Never once in our interview did he

20 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

express any signs of self accolade. When mentioning his family’s long line of rabbanim , he only praised his ancestors and said he hopes he will some day make them proud. However being acquainted with his life history it would be safe to say he already has. For starters this Chazzan was almost one that never was. His story of ascension to a grand Chazzan is the stuff that epic movies are made of. He was born in Israel to a highly respected family of rabbanim. When he was in yeshiva, his one and only concern was making sure that he could pass classes and not embarass his ancestors! Never in his wildest dreams did he see himself becoming a Chazzan.

His exciting journey into the Chazzan world all began in a yeshiva of all places--with a twist--he was a labor worker there! At 29 years of age he was working many odd end jobs to make ends meet. He had no big dreams, no major aspirations career wise. One day while working in the yeshiva kitchen his path crossed with a boy who put on a tape that played the voice of a very talented Chazzan . Tzvi started singing along to it while peeling potatoes. He thought nothing of it at the time, but he was told that he had potential. One day he picked up a copy of the Jewish Press and saw an ad by the Cantorial Department in YU

Then everything changed. He received a call from the Orthodox Congregation in Charleston--in spite of his lack of knowledge in Trophes--they revealed that by a unanimous vote he was given the position! Tzvi cites this moment as a stepping stone in his life to never give up on himself or anyone else in the darkest hour. In Charleston he studied how to become a better Chazzan but the best was yet to come. The day came when he was offered a job in Berlin at the only orthodox shul in that area--the Great Orthodox Synagogue . With

him with such joy. During his 4 year role as lead Chazzan in Berlin Tzvi gave concerts that even non Jews attended . At Berlin he gave his concert and many people came up to him praising him for his talents. On this one particular day he was approached by a woman openly sobbing with tears in her eyes. He did not know why she looked so saddened and wasn’t sure what to expect when she began to speak. This woman revealed that she was not a Jew and did not understand any word of his concert since it was in hebrew. However, she said “ Even though I did not understand a word you said, you sang from your soul and it touched

He was not up to par for them but he did not give up his search. Instead another program in manhattan accepted him. Soon he received offers from San Francisco and Charleston to audition for their programs. Prepared this time to leave a great impression he took a tape recorder with him and his voice . The people in San Francisco informed him that he was not what they were looking for. Saddened after the negative feedback he did not expect Charleston to want him either. He came to that interview and began to sing straight from his neshamah. The judging panel in Charleston then asked him if he had knowledge of Trophes. Being that his yeshiva days were far behind him , Tzvi revealed that he did not remember them. He left the interview feeling defeated as he did with San Francisco.

his close ties to the holocaust and a curiosity to see how the Jews of Berlin live he accepted the job on the spot. Tzvi did not know it at that time but he was in for an extraordinary experience. In Germany he wanted to meet authentic German Jews and see their lifestyle. His was floored to discover that in this orthodox shul, the congregants did not speak German-rather--they fluently spoke Yiddish! He thought that in all the time that has passed since the holocaust that the remaining Jews in Germany would assimilate and speak German but instead he learned that because of the holocaust these Jews maintained their connection to Judaism by keeping Yiddish alive and thriving in Berlin. Then he had his second extraordinary experience , one that to this day fills

mine! I have heard many famous concert singers all across the world-you were the first to make me feel this way!” She went on to explain that her tears were not of sadness, but of joy. Tzvi was in shock . He realized that the neshamah plays an important role in prayer. He further affirmed what he already knew --when it comes to a role of a Chazzan, the neshamah and the singing of the tefillah/ prayer must remain inseparable. From that point on Tzvi became what he humorously describes as a “freelance Rabbi”. He served as a Chazan in Montreal, Canada for five years at Congregation Zichro Kidoshim He began jetting across the world performing concerts in Canada, Panama, Italy, America--everywhere. He considers this a humbling privilege and sees every travel he

makes as an opportunity to meet many different people from many walks of life and to leave a positive impact on their soul. One of the people who had the biggest impact on his life was the late Avi Shimon Kugel . When speaking of him Tzvi often compared him to Avraham Aveinu. This man would always have an open house for Shabbat . He loved that he was blessed with the opportunity to provide anyone a meal for Shabbat. Also he jumped at the chance to help others in any way he was able to. Working in the same profession Kugel would always send job offers Tzvi’s way because he believed in helping others to succeed. He passed away a few months ago yet Tzvi still feels the sting of his loss until this day when he walks down those hallowed streets in Boro Park where Avi once lived. Like Avi, Tzvi believes that if you don’t put your heart into something it renders all actions meaningless. This brings me back to the breath taking analysis Tzvi gave me concerning the Chazzan profession in the Orthodox Jewish community right now. It has changed from one of

servitude and true teshuvah to a type of “ American Idol” scenario where the person who reaches the highest note wins. It’s a competition based on pure vanity and ego--the exact opposite way that Chazzanim should be thinking! Tzvi recalls attending a Chazzan concert of a very famous Chazzan in Jerusalem . This particular man hit many high notes and the crowd went wild. After the concert Tzvi practiced the same behavior as his friend Avi, and came up to congratulate the man. He felt a unity with being with fellow Chazzanim . He felt obligated to tell this man his professional opinion that by hitting many high notes he risked killing his beautiful voice. Instead the man responded with saying that he had to hit the high notes so he would be the undisputed “best” Chazzan. Saddened, Tzvi learned that the Chazzan world had changed. In this new world interpretation, being a “good” Chazzan means hitting as many high notes as you can for as long as you can. It is all a competition and basic show business. But not to Tzvi. According to Tzvi, being a true Chazzan means that you should be

22 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

focused on how much your neshamah and heart is it in. A Chazzan’s true purpose is meant to daven to Hashem; leading his congregants into prayer to do teshuvah. Every performance should sound soulful--unlike nowadays. In this current era, you will get a Chazzan giving you a teary eyed performance only during Yom Kippur, Tisha B’av, etc. It’s a once a year type of event. It is not 24/7. According to Tzvi this is a huge setback and in this case I am strongly inclined to agree. We need more Chazzanim like Tzvi . The Chazzan truly is our conduit to do tefillot that reach Hashem properly. If the Chazzan is focused on his ego and not touching our souls to bring forth REAL tefillot, then he is not doing his job. More importantly, the approach of the Chazzan affects both the outcome of our prayers and way we do our prayers. We should never take davening lightly. These days it is easy to get distracted by the material world and we are in a culture of being desensitized to many things. Our priorities,in effect, are completely out of order. So here is to hoping that the “old school” way of being a Chazzan will make a comeback.

Parents must tune in as kids tune out. The digital world is taking our children away from us.

How to Raise Kids in a Digital World by Slovie Jungreis-Wolff

T

he recent documentary “Web Junkie” depicts teens in China who have become so enamored with their video games they’ve stopped taking breaks to eat, sleep and even use the bathroom. Hours of playing have caused these kids difficulty in discerning reality and many have come to view the real world as fake. Doctors have diagnosed these children with a clinical disorder and established rehabilitation centers for them where they are kept isolated from media. Even if your child is not at that level of addiction, most parents agree that our children are excessively plugged in to their devices. A 2010 study cited that the “the average 8-10

year old spends nearly eight hours a day with a variety of media, and older children and teenagers spend more than 11 hours per day.” Texting may become the next behavioral obsession that parents must contend with. Half of teenagers send 50 or more texts a day and 13 to 17 year olds average 3,364 texts a month. These are alarming statistics that are only increasing. What can we do to prevent our relationship from disintegrating? Parents Must Take Charge For parents to make a difference, we must focus on both our own behavior as well as our children. When adults desire uninterrupted screen time, or wish their kids to keep quiet and not bother one other, we use technology as a convenient baby sitter.

32 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

But we don’t stop to think about the potential harm that we are causing. Conversation ceases. Carpools, dining out and relaxed leisure time are spent in silence. Families stop sharing thoughts, interactions and laughter. These are important bonding moments. Even sibling’s bickering becomes an opportunity to navigate relationships and learn how to speak and listen to one another. But playing Candy Crush, looking downwards and constantly checking phones prevent kids from staying focused on family. They miss out on nonverbal cues which is how we learn to communicate and read people’s emotions. And when parents were absorbed in their devices, researchers found children more likely to act out

BUZZ!

MAGAZINE

as they attempted to get attention. We encourage this behavior because we are not contemplating the impact of our actions. Few parents have set rules for their children and teens when it comes to tech and phone use. Kids left to their own devices neglect homework, remain sedentary, are sleep deprived and become easily pulled into the addictive nature of the online world. Add to that the dangers that unknown sites and chats pose, we realize that we need to rectify this situation before it’s too late. Dr. Stiener-Adair, in her bestselling book “The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age,” recommends the following steps: Parents should think twice before using a mobile device when they’re with their children Check emails and texts before interacting with children in the morning, during school hours and after kid’s bed time in the evening When parents come home from

work they should walk through the door unplugged. The first hour home should be used to reconnect with family. Children have said that they despise the phrase ‘just checking’ as parents look at their devices. Establish ‘cell free zones’ for both parents and kids. Critical moments like pickup from school are crucial transitional time for children to talk about their day. Parents should not be saying things like ‘just a minute; I need to finish this call.’ Homework should be done without phones at hand. Dinner time both at home and in a restaurant is another ‘device free zone’. We nourish not only bodies but souls too when we join together at a table. Young children should not have their own cellphones or iPads in their bedrooms. As children get older be wary of devices and where they are used. Teenagers require limits and it is not too late to set them. Don’t be afraid of taking charge and enforcing appropriate rules. Caretakers should also be made

aware of the dangers of not paying full attention to the children in their charge. There has been a recent 20% increase in accidental injuries seen in pediatric emergency rooms attributed to caretakers’ texting or talking on their phones and not properly watching children while they were in the bath or on the jungle gym. The negative effect on our relationship with our children is best seen through the words of a girl interviewed for Dr. Stiener-Adair’s book. She said, “I feel like I’m just boring. I’m boring my dad because he will take any text, any call, any time, even on a ski lift.” We must take the time to disengage from the world of technology and nourish our relationships. Heartache comes when we realize that we have wasted years looking down and missing out on connecting with those we love who sit in front of us, waiting to look into our eyes. Our children need to feel that we value our time together. They deserve our full attention and we will never regret time spent together.

Don Fernando Aguilar’s Amazing Shofar by Yvette Alt Miller

How a community of Jews defied the Spanish Inquisition to listen to the Shofar.

O

n August 2, 1492, a young sailor named Christopher Columbus departed Spain. As his ships sailed out of Seville’s harbor, he noted something curious: thousands of men, women and children were desperately cramming into boats and ships. That day was the final deadline for all Jews to leave the Spanish kingdom. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella had recently conquered all of Spain and sought to make their new kingdom an entirely Christian nation. No Jews could remain. In desperation, thousands fled, taking only those possessions they could carry. Within days, the Jewish community of Spain, which had flourished for hundreds of years, was no more. Synagogues were shuttered. Jewish schools were closed. The abandoned houses of the fleeing Jews were taken over by their non-

Jewish neighbors. In the weeks and months that followed the expulsion of Jews from Spain, Jewish life seemed completely dead. Not all of Spain’s Jews had fled when the fateful edict was pronounced. It was possible to remain in Spain but the conditions for doing so were dire: any Jew who hoped to remain in his home had to publicly embrace Christianity and renounce all Jewish observance. Many Jews lived ostensibly Christian lives in public, but held on to Jewish observance in secret. On Friday nights, these secret Jews would shutter their windows so neighbors wouldn’t see them light their Shabbos candles. Jewish housewives would bake their weekly challah loaves in hiding; their husbands would whisper the words of the Shabbos Kiddush. These clandestine Jews knew their very lives were at stake, should

40 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

a neighbor overhear their murmured Hebrew prayers, or a passer-by spy them enjoying a holiday meal. The Spanish Inquisition had begun years before, when a secret Passover Seder was reported taking place among secret Jews: any Jew suspected of clinging to his or her religion would be tortured into confessing, then burned at the stake. Thousands of Spanish Jews had already died in public executions this way. Public burnings of Jews became so frequent they even had a name, auto de fe, and attending these frequent spectacles became a popular national pastime. Even though they had ostensibly embraced Christianity, the secret Jews of Spain were never trusted; neighbors and priests realized they continued to practice Judaism, and were always alert to any display of Jewish ritual. Spaniards called these Jews “marranos,” a disparaging term

that means “pigs,” and many eagerly looked for any sign of Jewish practice could see them turned over to the Inquisition. The Conductor in Barcelona Yet in the city of Barcelona, a large group of secret Jews clung to their ancient traditions. It’s impossible for us to know today exactly how many of Barcelona’s Jews continued following their religion, but we do know from the following story, passed down from generation to generation, that it was a sizeable number. Don Fernando Aguilar was a prominent Barcelona Jew. Conductor of the prestigious Royal Orchestra in that city, he was a man of distinction and enjoyed great wealth and prestige. When the edict banishing him and his coreligionists from Spain came, Don Aguilar decided to remain. He publicly embraced Christianity, but at the same time made a daring decision: in private, Don Aguilar, like so many Spanish Jews, would never renounce his faith. Even though it meant he could be arrested at any moment, Don Aguilar continued to live as a Jew. When he came home each night, he kissed a mezuzah that he kept hidden in his floorboards. He was careful to eat only kosher food and observe the Jewish holidays. As the years went by, it became harder and harder to keep up his Jewish practice, but Don Aguilar – like the rest of Barcelona’s Jews – did as much as he could. There was no synagogue in his city any more, but groups of Jews would meet in private, under pain of death, to whisper prayers. There were no Jewish schools in Spain any longer, but families did their best to give their children a Jewish education. Year after grinding year, the secret Jewish community continued, holding on to as many of the mitzvot as possible. Some rituals, however, were nearly impossible to observe. One was listening to the Shofar. Each Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the secret Jews of Barcelona and elsewhere would gather to pray. On Rosh

BUZZ!

MAGAZINE

Hashanah they would eat a furtive festive meal together. On Yom Kippur, they would go about their business in public, never letting on that they were fasting. But blowing a Shofar out loud, let alone for the 100 blasts prescribed for each day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, was impossible. Doing so would lead to immediate arrest, torture, and death. The Shofar Symphony Five long years after the expulsion of Spain’s Jews, five years of practicing their religion in secret, of living a double life, Don Aguilar saw an opportunity. In 1497, he made a public announcement: on Sunday, the 5th of September, he would personally lead the Royal Orchestra of Barcelona in a brand-new concert of his own composition. The piece he’d written

Each Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the secret Jews of Barcelona and elsewhere would gather to pray. was unlike anything ever heard in Spain before. It was, he declared, to be a celebration of native peoples and their cultures. Every instrument ever invented around the world, no matter how far away, would be represented. On the eve of the concert, the orchestra hall was filled. Some in the audience noticed that Don Aguilar was not wearing the gold cross he usually sported, but there was so much excitement about his unusual orchestral work, nobody paid much attention to this difference in his dress. Many of those in attendance were “marranos” but the fact that so many of these people came to the

concert apparently didn’t arouse anyone’s suspicions. As the curtains parted, the concert began as planned. Don Aguilar’s music was interesting. True to his word, the audience heard from a wide range of instruments. There were bells and horns, stringed instruments and an array of different drums. Then, in the middle of the concert, a musician with the orchestra who was rumored by many to be a secret Jew took the stage. He was holding an unusual instrument: a ram’s horn. The musician put it to his lips, and began to blow. Tekiah, shevarim, teruah. Each note of the Rosh Hashanah Shofar service rang out throughout the hall, one hundred notes in all. Most of the audience appreciated it as a virtuoso performance of an unfamiliar instrument. But to the secret Jews in the audience, Don Aguilar’s “music” gave them their first chance in years to hear fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the Shofar. Sept. 5, 1497 was the first of Tishrei, 5258 – the night of Rosh Hashanah. Little is known of Don Aguilar. Some say he was arrested soon after the concert and executed in secret, so that news of his exploits would not become public. Others maintain he lived to an old age, continuing to live a Jewish life. All that is known is his amazing actions on Rosh Hashanah, over 500 years ago, when for one evening he allowed an entire secret Jewish community to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the Shofar. Primary source: Rabbi Eliyahu Ki-Tov, The Book of Our Heritage, and Rabbi Stewart Weiss’ article in the Jerusalem Post. Note: no written documentation of this event exists; the name of Don Fernando Aguilar and the legend of his actions in September 1497 have been passed down through the centuries verbally. While it is impossible for us to verify the details of these events, generations of Jews have maintained that this amazing Rosh Hashanah “concert” took place.

End of Summer Feast A light and delicious lunch menu. by Levana Kirschenbaum

Gazpacho Soup I have a couple wonderful secret ingredients that do wonders with this perennial favorite: Watercress, and capers. The upgrade will certainly not be lost on you: Liquid salad never tasted so good. Do not be tempted to substitute stem tomatoes, or grape or cherry tomatoes, to make gazpacho, no matter how luscious they look. For gazpacho we want much meatier tomatoes here, like plum or beefsteak. 8 plum tomatoes, halved (or 4 beefsteak tomatoes, quartered) 1 seedless cucumber, unpeeled cut into large chunks 1 medium red onion 2 red peppers, seeded and quartered 6 ribs celery, peeled 4 large cloves garlic 1 bunch flat parsley, stems and leaves Half a bunch watercress, stems and leaves 1/4 cup capers 4 cups bottled tomato juice 1/2 cup olive oil

1/2 cup fresh lemon or lime juice 3 tablespoons bottled hot sauce, or a little more to taste 1 tablespoon cumin 3 tablespoons paprika Salt and pepper to taste In a blender or food processor, in batches, blend all ingredients until smooth. If you like it chunkier, stop blending before it gets completely smooth. If necessary, thin the mixture with cold water. Serve chilled, topped with lemon or lime slices. Makes a dozen ample servings. Variation: For a main course, add a handful crumbled mock crab in each bowl after you spoon the soup, and a generous dollop guacamole (I keep my guacamole extra simple, in prevision of all the flavors it will be paired with: Mash avocadoes with lemon juice, salt and pepper and bottled hot sauce to taste)

Endive, Pear, Avocado and Walnut Salad Endives are wonderful in this salad. The dish is very easily adapted for Passover, and is equally at home as a salad or a side dish with grilled fish or chicken. We all notice walnut oil, which is an expensive treat year-round, is plentiful and reasonably priced during Passover: Go for it! 1 Anjou pear, unpeeled, cored, cut in quarters and sliced 3 endives, cut in thin wedges (make sure they stay attached at the top) 2 ribs celery, peeled and sliced very thin 1 avocado, cut in thin wedges Dressing: 1 medium shallot, minced 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil, or walnut oil 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons Dijon style mustard (omit on Passover) 2 tablespoons wasabi powder, or prepared horseradish 1 teaspoon sugar Salt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup chopped toasted walnuts (300 degree oven, about 15 minutes) Place the apple or pear, endives, celery and avocado in a shallow salad bowl or platter. Mix the dressing ingredients in a small bowl, and pour evenly over the salad. Just before serving, sprinkle the walnuts over the salad.

Moroccan Eggplant Salad with Preserved Lemons and Olives This dish is all roasted, so it is pretty streamlined, and pretty lean. Anything not to have to fry eggplant, which gobbles up oil like crazy! I have provided a super simple recipe, just make it ahead of time so you are sure to always have it on hand. 3 medium eggplant, peeled lengthwise (1 strip peeled, 1 strip not peeled: you will get a black and white stripe pattern), cut into 1/2 inch dice 3 roasted red peppers, bottled OK, diced small 1/3 cup pitted oil-cured or other good quality olives, chopped small 1/2 preserved lemon, pulp discarded, peel thoroughly rinsed (Passover: 2 tablespoons lemon zest) 5-6 sprigs cilantro 4 cloves garlic 1/3 cup olive oil 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or a little less to taste 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon paprika Preheat the oven to 475 degrees. line a baking sheet with foil, spray heavily with vegetable spray, arrange the eggplant dice in one layer and spray again. Bake about 20 minutes, until the eggplant is very soft and dark. Transfer to a bowl. Add the roasted peppers and the olives. In a food processor, finely grind (not allowing to get mushy) the lemon, cilantro and garlic. Add the oil, cumin, red pepper flakes and paprika and pulse just to combine. Add the mixture to the eggplant mixture and combine thoroughly. Serve at room temperature

Maple Roasted Salmon Recipe The short and dazzling favor lineup does its magic with practically no work. No problem doubling the recipe when you have a larger group, it will all get prepared in the same record time. You will never say you are bored of salmon again! Bluefish will be suitable here, as well as any thick white fish (bass, mahimahi, halibut, etc.). Please use a real, not disposable, pan. It makes the whole difference, not only in the end results in this and absolutely every dish, but in doing the right thing about cooking the healthful way. 1/3 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons soy sauce 3 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard 3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil 1 tablespoon coarsely ground pepper, or less to taste 1 whole side salmon, about 3½-4 pounds, skin off, bones out, trimmed Preheat the oven to 500°F. Mix all but last ingredient in a bowl. Place the salmon skin side up in a baking pan just large enough to fit it snugly in one layer (if you have empty spaces, the liquids will burn). Pour the sauce evenly over the fish. Bake 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer to a platter and pour the cooking juices over the fish. Serve hot, or at room temperature. Makes 8 main course servings, or a dozen ample first course servings.

Moroccan Spicy Nut Truffles 12/3 cups unblanched almonds 12/3 cups walnuts ¾ cup sugar 2 teaspoons ground cloves 1 teaspoon baking powder Good pinch salt 1 egg, or a little more Powdered sugar, sifted (do not skip the sifting) Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a food processor, place all ingredients, except the egg, and grind until you obtain a finely ground but still textured mixture. Do not grind finer or you will

get a greasy mixture. Transfer to a mixing bowl. Add the egg and mix by hand until the mixture is smooth and malleable, adding just a little more egg if necessary. Shape the mixture into little balls. Pour powdered sugar over the balls (as opposed to rolling them into the sugar, which might make them look greasy), shaking off the excess sugar. Place the balls on a real cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake 15 minutes, not a second longer. The truffles will look cracked all over. Let the truffles cool completely before storing in an airtight tin.
