The Spilled Beans ,Q 5HVSRQVH WR . / ZKR Ă€QGV PDUULDJH GLIĂ€FXOW Didn’t anyone warn you about preconceived notions? You expected your husband to be handy? Who gave you the right to expect that? It doesn’t make him less of a mentch that he isn’t! I sincerely hope it will be the worst problem you encounter. When you enter a marriage, you have to come with an open mind, to learn who this new person is. DO NOT come with a list of what you expect of him. Good Luck, $ PDUULHG ZRPDQ ,Q 5HVSRQVH WR $ 0 ZKRVH ZLIH KDWHV WR FOHDQ XS I read your letter and I came up with a couple of ideas. Firstly, you write that you have a bunch of kids. Why not work out a rotation where every day of the week each child has to do a small job. As an incentive, you could promise a special nosh for Shabbos or a nice, inexpensive family outing once a month if all the chores are done well. Another idea is that you could contact a local high school that has help-a-mom as part of their chessed program. A girl can come once a week to play with the children while your wife takes care of the housework. This way, she has the children out of the way and she won’t be so pressured. Wishing you luck and hope it all works out. $QRQ\PRXV The Potatoes Dear Editor, I’m hoping that your readers can help me with a YHU\ GLIĂ€FXOW VLWXDWLRQ , KDYH D UHODWLYH ZKR LV YHU\ depressed, at a young age. She is almost a teen. Her parents are supportive and are trying to get her the help she needs. She is seeing a therapist, but because of her issues, therapy isn’t going too well. She’s failing school, and has no friends. Unfortunately, she has picked up some very ‘teenage’ ideas from books and the internet. She believes she is unloved, but her family is so loving. I am not biased; they really are. She is shown a lot of warmth and respect. She gets angry and she shouts at her parents, blames them

for her problems, and even throws things. Then she feels better and cries that she is sorry. Worst of all, this girl feels that being frum is not fun. She is in a Bais Yakov environment, but inside she feels completely alienated from what she is being taught. It’s a delicate stage. In a few years, this could lead to outright rebellion and going off the derech, chas v’shalom. Her family is treading on thin ice. I am in a position where I may be able to help. She is extremely close to me, possibly more than to her other relatives. She is not afraid to discuss her issues with me. But the thing is, I am at a loss about what to say or do to help. I feel maybe I could prevent her from going off the derech, chas v’shalom, by helping her see the good in her life, and helping her learn to deal with her situation and her hard to control emotions. But I am not a kiruv expert, and I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing. I want to bring her closer, but I’m scared that I may turn her further away if I botch things up. Can anyone advise me? C.T. The Meat of the Matter Dear Editor, I just got my daughter’s kindergarten registration form, for a Bais Yaakov school in New York. I am experiencing a bit of sticker shock and also some uncertainty about the assistance application. First of all, is it normal to pay $8000 for kindergarten?! For some reason I thought it would be less expensive than buying a car. after having been in kollel for several years. It is a very tight place to be in, because he’s no longer in kollel but life only gets harder and more expensive, which no one seems to realize or understand. Hopefully when he graduates my husband will get some incredible job offer that will cover our tuition, if nothing else, but certainly until then there is no way we can afford this. I have a few things I’m not sure how to answer on the application: 1. It’s not like we are home owners, halevai, but why do they need to know the current market value of our home? Surely they are not suggesting that people should sell the house they live in to cover their tuitions?! 2. One of the questions is how much we can pay. What is considered a reasonable offer? Plus, stuff comes up. So I can’t just calculate (income expenses = tuition). What percentage of our money do they expect us to give? 3. They want a full breakdown of our expenses. It’s a real budget list. For example, “car insuranceâ€? is on a separate line from “car gasâ€? and the like. I really SHOULD be more responsible about this, and I have tried doing things like tracking our expenses, but I just haven’t managed to work out what an average month or year is. But now that I will have to report it under “State all vacations on this chart: Number of travelers, destination, date and duration, costs even if paid by someone else, reason for trip, etc.â€? Oh, never mind already! I’ll just stay in my too-small apartment all winter and rot. After all, the cost of my vacation would come straight out of some poor teacher’s pocket or something. Not worth it. Good grief! M.W.

LETS DISCUSS IT

What is Life’s Purpose?

W

ithin the last several weeks a rather frightening case was reported in the newspaper. Its implications are almost incredible. The suit involved an elderly gentleman who was apparently a bit senile, and who was also on dialysis. The family determined that the old gentleman had passed the time of productivity and, if he had the mental ability to reason it out properly, would have wished to terminate his meager existence. Had the nurses, who had grown to love this man, not protested, this man might be dead today. We live in a frightening age. We now have awesome technological and biological powers in our hands, but other than the Torah, civilization has no solid ethical or moral basis for the determination of how these powers are to be used. Not only has our modern world made it convenient and inexpensive to kill children while still in the womb, there is actually serious GLVFXVVLRQ RI LVVXLQJ D OLIH FHUWLĂ€FDWH which would pronounce an infant legally alive, just as one is now legally FHUWLĂ€HG WR EH GHDG 7KLV FHUWLĂ€FDWH would not be issued until after the birth of a child, when a complete battery of tests could be administered. In a day when the power of life and death seems to be more in the hands RI PHQ WKDQ HYHU EHIRUH ZH ÀQG RXU society in a moral vacuum in which these life and death decisions are to be made. The age-old philosophical questions about the meaning of life are no longer simply academic and intellectual—they are intensely practical and must be answered. In Judaism, life is valued above almost all else. The Talmud notes that all people are descended from a single person, thus taking a single life is like destroying an entire world, and saving a single life is like saving an entire world. Of the 613 commandments, only the prohibitions against murder, idolatry, and z’nus are so important that they cannot be violated to save a life. Judaism not only permits, but often requires a person to violate the commandments if necessary to save a life. A person who is extremely ill, for example, or a woman in labor, is not permitted to fast on Yom Kippur, because fasting at such a time would endanger the person’s life. Doctors are permitted to answer emergency calls on Shabbos, even though this may violate many Shabbos prohibitions. Because life is so valuable, we are not permitted to do anything that may hasten death, not even to prevent suffering. Euthanasia, suicide, and

assisted suicide are strictly forbidden by Jewish law. The Talmud states that you may not even move a dying person’s arms if that would shorten his life. By contrast, in the Torah, death is not a tragedy, even when it occurs early in life or through unfortunate circumstances. Death is a natural process. Our deaths, like our lives, have meaning and are all part of Hashem’s plan. In addition, we have D Ă€UP EHOLHI LQ DQ DIWHUOLIH D ZRUOG WR come, where those who have lived a worthy life will be rewarded. Mourning practices in Judaism are extensive, but they are not an expression of fear or distaste for death. Jewish practices relating to death and mourning have two purposes: to show respect for the dead (kevod ha-mes), and to comfort the living (nichum avelim), who will miss the deceased. We all wish to live a meaningful life. But why are we living? What are we doing in this world? 7R Ă€QG WKH DQVZHU WR WKLV FHQWUDO question we must look in the very book of life itself – the Torah, which is called Toras Chaim (a living Torah). The word “Torahâ€? means “instructionâ€? or “guidance,â€? for the Torah is our guide in life. The Torah makes us constantly aware of our duties in life; LW JLYHV XV D WUXH GHĂ€QLWLRQ RI RXU purpose, and it shows us the ways and means of attaining this goal. The Torah begins with Bereishis. (Genesis 1:18) How was this “world conquestâ€? to be attained and what is the purpose and true meaning of it? Our Chachomim teach that when Hashem created Adam, his neshama – his Divine image – permeated and irradiated his whole being, by virtue of which he became ruler over the entire creation. All the creatures gathered to serve him and to crown him as their creator. But Adam, pointing out their error, said to them, “Let us all come and worship Hashem our Maker!â€? Needless to say, before a man sets out to conquer the world he PXVW Ă€UVW FRQTXHU KLPVHOI DQG KLV own ego through the subjugation of the “earthlyâ€? and “beastlyâ€? in his own nature. This is attained through actions which accord with the directives of the Torah – the practical guide to everyday living – so that the material becomes permeated and illuminated with the light of Hashem. Hashem created one man and upon this single person on earth He imposed this duty and task. Herein lies the profound yet clear directive, namely, that one man – each and every person – is potentially capable of “conquering the world.â€? If a person

GRHV QRW IXOĂ€OO KLV WDVN DQG GRHV QRW utilize his inestimable Divine powers it is not merely a personal loss and failure but something that affects the destiny of the whole world. One of the main distinguishing features in the creation of man is that man was created as a single being, unlike other species which were created in large numbers.

“

It’s obvious that you can’t get away with a lie on the basis of someone else’s experience.

“

The Rabbis teach us that Adam was the prototype and example for each and every individual to follow. For this reason was man created single, in order to teach you that ‘one person is equivalent to an entire world.’ This means that every Jew, indeed, every human being, regardless of time and place and personal status, has the fullest capacity (and also the duty) to rise and attain the highest GHJUHH RI IXOĂ€OPHQW DQG DFFRPSOLVK the same for creation as a whole. LETS DISCUSS IT was created with the Divine spark within him did the entire creation become worthy and complete. One of the great teachings of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chassidic movement, is that of an ongoing creative process. Divine creative energy is constantly pulsating through the creation, bringing it into being ex nihilo every single second. If Hashem were to stop creating the world, even for an instant, it would revert to null and void, as before the creation. When the Chachomim talk about “removal of the Divine Presenceâ€? they are not suggesting that Hashem literally removed Himself from the world – otherwise the world would cease to exist. Rather they are suggesting that sin creates an insensitivity to that Divine Presence. G–dliness is no longer manifest and felt by the creation. It is almost as though Hashem is in exile from His world. This was the result of generations of sin and it is only through the efforts of the tzaddikim in each generation that the world was again sensitized to the Divine Presence and became a Ă€WWLQJ DERGH IRU +LV SUHVHQFH The construction of the Mishkan H[HPSOLĂ€HV WKH SXUSRVH RI FUHDWLRQ which, in the words of the Midrash is that, “Hashem desired to have an abode in the lowest of all worlds.â€? The purpose of man is to take the creation and permeate it with G– dliness. This idea was demonstrated in the Mishkan. When the Jews left Egypt they took with them great wealth, which they subsequently donated for the materials necessary for the construction of the Mishkan. Every facet of the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms was represented in the Mishkan. The walls were made of wooden boards covered with gold. The offerings brought in the Mishkan represented the elevation

of the animalistic dimension within man and its dedication to a higher purpose. Every aspect of the Tabernacle transformed the material into the spiritual. Thus the Mishkan, which our sages say was a microcosm, RU V\PERO RI WKH XQLYHUVH UHĂ HFWHG our very task in the world: that is, to take the material and transform and elevate it for a spiritual purpose. LETS DISCUSS IT pointer for each and every person, to make a dwelling place for the Divine Presence ZLWKLQ WKHPVHOYHV. As mentioned previously, every person is infused with a Divine Soul. It is the task of the soul to make a Mishkan out of the body in which it resides by elevating all bodily functions to a Divine purpose. In short, this means being able to connect every bodily function with Hashem – and this is precisely the purpose of Torah and mitzvos. In the Torah, Hashem instructs us how to connect every sphere of operation and function with Him. For example, in terms of time, “six days you shall work and the seventh day you shall rest.â€? The function of Shabbos is to allow a person to withdraw from the mundane and focus on the spiritual for one day a week. This, in turn, creates a new perspective on the week to come. By simply dedicating one day a week to study and prayer, one elevates the entire week. The laws of Kashrus connect a Jew in his eating habits and the laws of taharas hamishpachah elevate relationships. And so it is with all the mitzvos. The Chachomim tell us that a human being is made of 248 limbs and 365 sinews. These correspond to the 248 positive commandments and the 365 negative commandments of the Torah. The word mitzvah in Aramaic means “a connection.â€? Thus, there are 613 ways of connecting with Hashem. Man has the ability to connect his entire being with Hashem. Upon achieving this task he creates an abode for Hashem in this ZRUOG KHQFH IXOĂ€OOLQJ WKH SXUSRVH RI creation. The worlds of the spiritual and WKH PDWHULDO DUH QRW LQ FRQĂ LFW 7KH ultimate purpose is that they be fused and the material permeated with the spiritual. The core of all mitzvah performance is to take the material

creation and utilize it for a Divine purpose. This achieves a wonderful harmony both in the individual and in the world at large. This theme is not relegated to the synagogue or moments of religious practice. Rather it encompasses all times and places; wherever and whenever a person operates he is able to utilize the task at hand for its correct, Divine, purpose. The Talmud is replete with references to the World to Come. Maimonides describes it as a “world of souls,â€? a spiritual plane to which the soul returns after its sojourn in this world. The soul is to give an account of its lifetime and, subsequently, its merits and demerits are carefully weighed on the Divine scales. It is then rewarded for its good deeds and Torah learning. The reward takes the form of a revelation of Hashem’s glory, “basking in the Divine light.â€? It may be necessary for the neshama to be cleansed from its indulgences and iniquities and so it is sent to *HKLQRP D VSLULWXDO SXULĂ€FDWLRQ depot, after which it ascends to Heaven. The Talmud uses the terms “Garden of Edenâ€? or the “Heavenly Academyâ€? to describe various levels and stages of this heavenly reward. In this sense this world is a mere “corridor before the World to Come,â€? a temporary stepping stone where one may earn a place and seat in the World to Come. In fact the Chachomim state: “Better one hour of heavenly bliss in the World to Come than all the pleasures of this worldâ€? (Avot 4:17). One should not serve Hashem merely to receive this reward, yet Hashem does not remain in debt and will reward a person for all his good deeds. To this aim there is an “eye watching, an ear listening and a hand writingâ€? all of a person’s actions in this world. An exact account is kept. But although the revelations

of the higher spiritual worlds are PDJQLĂ€FHQW DQG D WUXH UHZDUG IRU the soul’s efforts, what Hashem ultimately wants from us are the good deeds and mitzvos of this world. It is for this reason that there is no open mention of the World to Come in the scripture. The Torah is primarily concerned with life on this world. The soul exists before its descent and returns to the heavenly realm in the afterlife. It is a “descent for the purpose of ascent,â€? the ascent EHLQJ WKH IXOĂ€OPHQW RI WKH XOWLPDWH purpose in creation, the construction of a dwelling for Hashem in this world. Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi used to say, “I do not want Your Gan Eden, I do not want Your World to Come, I only want You, Yourself.â€? He meant that although the spiritual bliss of the World to Come is great, G-dliness is experienced only by IXOĂ€OOLQJ WKH XOWLPDWH SXUSRVH ² ZLWK one hour of repentance and good deeds in this world. The Baal Shem Tov said that a soul, in addition to keeping the Torah and mitzvos, may descend to this world and live for 70 or 80 years just to do a favor for another in the material or the spiritual realms. How does one know RQH¡V RZQ VSHFLĂ€F SXUSRVH" +RZ does one know which favor is the purpose of one’s soul’s descent? The answer is that everything happens by Divine Providence and if a person is presented with a certain opportunity, this is certainly sent from Above and should be treated as if it is the purpose of one’s neshama’s descent. The particular time and place a person lives and his station in life, whether rich or poor etc., is decided from Above. A person’s only contribution is his reaction to any

Our Chachomim stated further, “each and every soul was in the presence of His Divine Majesty before coming down to this earthâ€? and that, “the neshamos are hewn from under the Seat of Glory.â€? These sayings emphasize the essential nature of the neshama, its holiness and purity, and how it is completely divorced from anything material and physical. The soul itself, by its very nature, is not subject to any material desires or temptations, which arise only from the physical body. Once it launches, the carpet will be available in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes to suit almost any space. The two companies have already presented a few examples of

SHIDDUCHIM

Mismatched! True stories of disaster dates, submitted by our readers! BY Anonoymous Reader

y sister and I are only one year apart in age. Consequently, when I was 20 and she 19, we were both ‘on the dating scene’ at the same time. We found little to talk about in the car, he laughed at his own lame jokes, and he wouldn’t stop cracking his knuckles. But he did take me to a very elegant restaurant. The place was pretty full, and we waited a few minutes to be seated. As we were escorted to our table, we passed another couple that was

also obviously on a shidduch date. When Chaim and I sat down, I was facing the young lady. It didn’t take more than one glance at her hairsprayed bob, to recognize my sister. Her date, whose name was David, had obviously chosen the same restaurant. She looked up from her salad bowl, and her eyes widened in shock when she saw me sitting just

TORAH

Are We Being Baalei Chesed? By Rabbi Moshe Shmiel Rottenberg

A

re we simply learning about Mitzrayim, or are we reliving the times of Mitzrayim? It is amazing to learn in sefarim about the incredible acts of chesed that Yidden did for one another during that Golus, and how they behaved towards each other with kindness, to help ease the pain and suffering. We read about incredible stories of similar chesed carried out during World War II. The mesiras nefesh that Klal Yisroel had for one another was almost beyond comprehension. We were like family, and we protected one another through every tzara. Today b’H there is no Paroh and no Hitler. Of course some people have it easier than others, but let’s make a cheshbon hanefesh about how we behave now that b’H we are no longer living in Gehinnom. I was recently by the funeral of a fairly young person. The levaya was called for one o’clock in the afternoon on a business day. By a quarter to one there wasn’t even standing room. People had to stand outside in the freezing cold - and they did. They were not even seen by the family, neither were they interested in being noticed. They came for the kavod of the niftar. The aron was brought in twenty minutes late, but nobody left.

receives an invitation to a wedding? Let’s be truthful. Isn’t it: ‘Oy, I have to go to this wedding but I really don’t have koach for it. I have to get all dressed and shlep myself out at night for this.’ If your neighbor/ friend/relative/acquaintance would not have sent you an invitation in WKH Ă€UVW SODFH \RX ZRXOG SUREDEO\ have taynos to him. ‘How dare he not invite me to his chasuna! He doesn’t consider me close enough?!’ You would not be the happiest camper in the machane if he had left you out. But now that you got an invitation, you nebech have to go and if things run late you just make sure to be seen by the key family members and off you run. You’ve done your duty. How many times, when it comes to the main course, do we see so much of the baal simcha’s money going down the drain because people are not there anymore to eat it! How few people are there by the second dance? Why are we there for one another attentively. Many people even went out to the cemetery, a long drive away. during an eis tzara, but so far Mi k’amcha Yisroel! Such chesed is removed during an eis simcha? Why truly unbelievable, and exists in no do we forget to appreciate the many simchos that we b’H can enjoy in our other nation on earth. 1RZ OHW¡V WDNH D ORRN DW WKH Ă LS generation? Maybe it’s time to reexamine the Â?²° Â?ÂœÂžÂšÂŤÂž  ÂžÂą ¹¯° that kicked in in Golus Mitzrayim, and during WWII. Can it be that in today’s comfortable world, with all the hustle and bustle, all the technology and our harried lifestyles, we have very few real friends who are there for us through thin and thick, through sadness and joy? We need to be the type of friend who is there for another not just to chat (or text) on the phone, but to be there during every life situation both bad and good, for ruchniyus and gashmiyus. The mechatonim at a simcha should certainly be considerate of their guests and not keep them waiting for nothing because of a desire for extra pictures! But the guests should be there heart and soul, participating in the simcha with just as much, if not more, kavana and chesed than they would at a levaya, ch’v. Mr. Cohen readily agreed and traveled to Budapest. There he placed ads in several newspapers announcing the formation of a new religious school. Mr. Reichmann and Mr. Moskowitz asked Mr. Cohen how many children he expected to register for the school. HUMOR

What’s Age Got To Do With It? S. Fishman

I

changed the bulb in my bathroom. I know that doesnt sound especially interesting, but this particular bulb was a much brighter bulb than the previous one. Does anyone see where I’m going with this? A brighter bulb in a room with a mirror? Aaahhh...I think some of you DUH JHWWLQJ LW , Ă LSSHG RQ WKH OLJKW WKLV morning, looked into the mirror and scared myself silly. I screamed. Who was that?! It certainly wasn’t me. I didn’t have tiny wrinkles around my eyes and I most cetainly did not have a white hair. (Okay, more than one.) Well, it was obviously the fault of the bulb. It was way too bright. )LUVW WKLQJV Ă€UVW , ZDV JRLQJ RXW WR get a new bulb. I always thought of myself as eighteen. It was easy to do because my father routinely shaved off a few years from my age to deny the passage of time. ´0\ GDXJKWHU VKH¡V WZHQW\ Ă€YH easy!â€? At the rate he’s going, in a couple of years I’ll be the same age as my teenage son! I had a recent eye exam to renew my license. It was very frustrating because the screen was not clear. I couldn’t seem to see the letters. I squirmed. I squinted. I shifted. “It’s very dark here, don’t you think? Is that screen very old? Because it seems to be a bit blurry.â€? The lady doing the exam found me very amusing. The humor of the

situation still eludes me. “It’s normal,â€? she told me. “Your eyesight is just not what it used to be.â€? Obviously, she was quite mistaken. 0\ H\HVLJKW LV MXVW Ă€QH ,W¡V KHU lighting that was no good. She needs brighter bulbs. But you can only fool yourself for so long. It’s true you are as young as you feel, but your body doesn’t seem to have heard that particular pearl of wisdom. Things happen without your consent. Like crinkles appearing overnight. Or white hairs sprouting willy nilly. Or your young newly married neighbor saying, “In your days...â€? At some point, you have to accept reality. You are NOT as young as you used to be, no matter what your inner self is feeling. That’s when you head to the beauty aisle. Once there, you are faced with a plethora (I’ve always wanted to use that word! Makes me sound not only older, but also wiser) of beauty products. There are cleansers and toners, scrubs and peels, moisturizers and creams. Do you need the noncomedogenic, fragrance free, sensitive or combination skin? Do you want it with SPF, antioxidants, retinol, salycilic acid, vitamin e, cucumber or pomegranate extracts? It’s very tough to choose. Of course you want the 7LPH )UHH]H ,QVWDQW 5HĂ€QLQJ 6HUXP (who doesn’t want that?) but you also must have the Ageless Intensives Skin Renewing Cream. And shouldn’t you get the Advanced Age Defying

Micro Sculpting Serum, even though you’re not exactly sure what a micro sculpting serum is, but you just know that it’s defying age and it’s advanced, so it’s gotta be good. But it’s no good just buying the stuff. You have to actually use them. Which I usually don’t. I subscribe to the Osmosis Philosophy, which EHOLHYHV WKDW \RX FDQ EHQHÀW IURP WKH creams you buy just by having them on your shelf. Truth is, who has time for a beauty regimen? I’d rather just collapse into bed at night with all my makeup. That way, I don’t have to put on fresh makeup in the morning! Regardless of your beauty beliefs or regimens, age happens to the best of us. It’s how you take it that matters. I plan on embracing it. And getting dimmer bulbs.

SUDOKU

HOW TO PLAY

The objective of sudoku is to enter a digit from 1 through 9 in each cell, in such a way that: Each horizontal row contains each digit exactly once Each vertical column contains each digit exactly once Each subgrid or region contains each digit exactly once

The puzzler’s job is to fill the remainder of the grid with digits –respecting, of course, the three constraints mentioned earlier.

HARD

In each sudoku puzzle, several digits have already been entered (the “givens”); these may not be changed.
