T

he shadchan told me she’d be tall, and I was actually afraid she’d tower over my 5’8 frame in three inch heels. But other than that, everything else about the girl seemed ZRUWK D WU\ , ZDV GHĂ€QLWHO\ LQWULJXHG by her job as a prosecutor’s assistant. That was certainly a change from my other run-of-the-mill dates, all of whom had either been secretaries or preschool teachers. Besides, her parents were well to do and they’d offered to support my learning full time, so why not? I agreed to go out with Chani. When I went to pick Chani up, I was most relieved to note that my idea of ‘tall’ was very different from the shadchan’s. She couldn’t have been more than 5’5, which put my mind instantly at ease. We sat into the car and I started the conversation with “So, tell me about your job.â€? I was totally unprepared for Chani’s response. She said “Well, I help my boss take charge of a bunch of little monsters all day long.â€? That threw me for a minute. By ‘little monsters’ I assumed she meant VRPH RI 1HZ <RUN¡V Ă€HUFHVW IHORQV including thieves, con artists and mass murderers. “That’s gotta be tough. So, how do you take charge of them?â€? I plowed on. She laughed. “They’re actually very

cute once you get to know them.â€? I turned to stare at her. They’re cute once you get to know them?! I tried to read her expression to see if she was joking with me, but she looked perfectly serious. I pulled at the knot on my tie and opened the top button of my shirt. For some reason, I’d started to sweat. There was obviously a screw loose in this girl’s head, and I was stuck with her for an entire evening! I decided to switch topics. “Um, so you’re the youngest in your family, right?â€? “Nope. I’m number six out of sixteen siblings, and my older brothers and brothers in law are all in the family business.â€? “Oh. But I thought your parents supported your sisters’ husbands Ă€QDQFLDOO\ Âľ “No way! My father believes in every man being the breadwinner of his household. Kollel is only for exceptional talmidei chachamim. Everyone else should go to work and provide for his own family.â€? Was it me, or was the air conditioning really weak in the car? I’d experienced a feeling of detachment with other dates before, but this was a whole new level of disconnection. What in the world was going on? I took a deep breath. “How were your summers at Camp Sternberg?â€?

We looked at each other in horror while I wondered if it was possible that my tall, legal assistant, kollel supporting date was enjoying herself with Mindy Stein’s intended shidduch. I

t seems like a lot of people are working on controlling their anger. It seems that not only are most of them unsuccessful, but they end up becoming depressed from the entire experience. The following is a true story. I kid you not. It may seem like I made this up but I didn’t. I had not seen a certain friend for many years. We shall change his name and call him Moe in order to protect the guilty. Moe is a very bright person. He had taught in a Yeshiva in his youth but a few disappointments in life caused him to change his profession several times. Eventually he learned about counseling and he specialized in anger management. One day we met in the local shul and we began to talk. He began telling me about a situation that happened on the previous Purim. It seems that when he was in shul, a boy was sitting behind him. When the person who was reading the Megillah pronounced the name of the evil “Hamam”, the boy started to shoot his cap gun right next to Moe’s ear, while yelling “BOOO!” and stamping his feet furiously. This bothered Moe immensely, and so he turned around to the boy and warned him in a very strict and threatening voice that if the boy did it again, Moe would break the gun heave him out of the building by his ankles.

The boy’s father, Moe related to me, became enraged that someone would threaten his son and told Moe that if he tried to harm his innocent boy or the kid’s perfectly proper property, the father would break Moe’s arm. Well, one word led to another and the next thing you knew there was an allout battle in the shteeble. My friend turned to me and confessed that it was bad enough that he, an anger counselor, should lose his temper, but he felt even worse knowing that he had committed a grave sin. “An avairah?” I replied in surprise. “What avairah was that?” “Why, getting angry is an avaiarah,” he replied. “Anger is a sin?” I asked. “Where do you see that anger is a sin?” “Everyone knows that it is a sin.” “No,” I replied, “Anger is not an avairah. It certainly is not a very nice way to express yourself. But a sin it is not. If you get angry, it shows bad middos perhaps, but it is not an avairah.” “It certainly is a sin!” he said. I could see that he held very strongly that it was indeed an avairah. “Well, in what sefer is it written that it is a sin? Show me, and I will concede to you.” “It is in the Rambam,” Moe replied, and he went to the bookshelf and took out the big book and laid it down

in front of me as he began turning the pages. “Here it is,” he exclaimed proudly and began reading to me. “The Rambam writes (da’at 2:3) ‘Anger is a bad character trait and must be avoided. A person should teach himself to avoid anger even in a situation that calls for it.’ There,” he responded with pride, “it is written clearly!” “Not so quick,” I said. “The Rambam says that anger should be avoided and that it is a bad character trait. I agree, but he does not put it into the category of an avairah.” I began to see the rage building up in him. His face quivered and became tight as he tried to suppress his feelings. Then it came out: “LOOK, DON’T TELL ME ABOUT ANGER! I AM AN EXPERT IN ANGER! I TEACH SEMINARS TO MANY PEOPLE ABOUT ANGER!!” I saw that instead of alleviating his worries about sinning, I had caused him to become angry with me. I tried to placate him. “I’m sorry. I only meant to clarify the Rambam.” “LISTEN,” he said as he trembled, trying with all of his might to control himself so that he should not make a scene once again in a shul. “I DON’T LIKE YOUR CONDESCENDING ATTITUDE. DON’T TELL ME ABOUT ANGER, I AM AN EXPERT!” I saw that I had put my foot in it, so I backed down from a sticky situation. “Ok,” I said. “So now you sinned

HUMOR again.� Now you may think that I made up this story; I did not. It is as real as it is ludicrous. I could not believe my eyes that this “expert� in anger was blowing up at me because I had pointed out an error in his judgment. But let me ask you this question: If the experts are unable to manage

their anger, what about us simple folk? Or perhaps the question is even deeper: “Why was it that an expert in anger management, a fellow who was LQWHOOHFWXDOO\ TXDOLĂ€HG ZKR NQRZV more than most about anger, could not take his professed knowledge and make it work? 7KH DQVZHU LV VLPSOH EXW GLIĂ€FXOW

There is a wide difference between being an expert in human skills and actually being skilled. There is an intellectualization that remains in the mind but never seems to descend and control the emotive reactions. Moe mastered the knowledge about anger, but failed to master anger itself because he was unable to make that knowledge a part of him. We must not make that mistake. First we must realize that all situations, unpleasant as they may be, really come from Hashem. It is He who has caused us to IDOO LQWR GLIĂ€FXOW FLUFXPVWDQFHV The person who is causing us the discomfort is really an agent of Hashem, as distasteful as this person may be. Cuff doesn’t actually expand on what that information is, but let’s hope it involves identifying safe locations nearby, rather than offering stilted advice like “Don’t make eye contact with strangers.â€? Still, the fact that most women I know would wear its products (which you can preorder starting at $50) is encouraging. Perhaps high security/high fashion is not some sort of tech world Xanadu.

The Horse that Prayed By Dov Shalem

O

nce there was a small town in Eastern Europe name Homel. There was one shul and the local townsmen would come each day and pray. They were simple folk and they liked to pray with feeling and HPRWLRQ 7KHLU WHÀORV ZHUH ODGHQ ZLWK singing and even spontaneous dance. They enjoyed meeting in the small shul and their prayers were always a joyous celebration. However, there were some men who disliked their mode of worship. They insisted that the proper PDQQHU RI WHÀORK DV GLUHFWHG E\ WKH authoritative Code of Jewish Law demanded that decorum be observed. They fought that the shul prayer services should be arranged according to the clock in order to enable the townsmen to complete their prayers in an orderly fashion so they could go to work without undue delay. 7KLV VHFRQG JURXS ÀQDOO\ SUHYDLOHG on the tiny shul and they forbid the impromptu singing and dancing that had marked the joyous services. Now WKH WHÀORV ZHUH FRQGXFWHG DFFRUGLQJ to a set pattern. They would begin at a certain time and each prayer took D VSHFLÀHG PHDVXUHG WLPH ,Q WKLV PDQQHU WKH WHÀORV ZHUH YHU\ RUGHUO\ DQG WKH VHUYLFH ÀQLVKHG DW WKH SUHFLVH moment. 7KH ÀUVW JURXS WKH PHQ ZKR enjoyed the spontaneous prayers, were downtrodden. They just could not manage to pray in the constriction of timed prayer without the joyous,

impromptu outbursts of soulful song. They wrote a letter to the illustrious Rav, the Dubno Magid, who was known for his power of speech. The Dubno Magid was wont to travel from community to community and tell stories that had deep moral messages. When he received this communication from the depressed men of Homel, he decided to visit the town. After spending a few days in the town and davening at the tiny synagogue, he announced that he would give a speech after the evening prayers. The small synagogue was jam-packed. Everyone turned out to hear the famed Rav speak. The Dubno Magid ascended the podium and began addressing the crowd. “A hundred years ago, several wealthy gentile land-owners made a hunt together. They spent the day chasing after wolves and foxes. After an exhausting day, one of the landowners invited the rest of the participants to come to his house for a festive meal commemorating a successful hunt. The men obliged. The landowners began eating a festive meal and drinking wine. They began recalling the pleasures of the hunt. Each one was bragging about their part in the hunt and how well they had done. Soon the men were reveling in their overindulgence in wine. Each man tried to outdo the other. Finally one tipsy landowner stood

No, that they refused to accept. “I will bet each of your 2000 Rubles, (a large sum of money) that he can do it!â€? The men smiled at each other. This looked too good to be true. Two thousand rubles? It’s a bet! The drunken landowner ordered that Moshe and a horse be brought in. “Moshe, I have bet these gentlemen a

Woe to you if you fail!” Moshe tried to reason with the drunken landowner, but to no avail. He took the horse to his home despairing of the future. His wife greeted him asking why he looked so depressed. Moshe explained the wager and what he was requested to do and the veiled threat if he did not succeed. “What is the problem?” his wife answered, “those men do not know what prayer is. Train the horse to bow, and rock and to turn the pages of the prayer book with his tongue and they will think that he is praying.” “Maybe you’re right. What do I have to lose?” So Moshe took the horse and worked on training him to mimic a Jew praying. At the appointed day, all the wealthy landowners assembled, looking forward to wining a bet. Moshe came in and set up a podium. He placed a prayer book on it and opened it to the proper page. Next he brought in the horse. He placed a skullcap on its head and a prayer shawl over its long neck. “Horse, Pray!” The horse took three steps forward, bowed and began rocking as if in meditation and contemplation of the Creator. After a few moments, the horse extended his long tongue and swish, he turned the page. Continuing rocking in the best traditional Jewish style of prayer, he swooshed again with his large tongue and turned the page again. This continued for several minutes until the horse bowed again and took three steps backwards and stopped. “Hurrah!” screamed the host; “I have won my bet! Pay up!” “Not so fast,” the other landowners replied. “The horse was not

praying!” “What do you mean? Of course he was! We saw with our very own eyes!” “That’s not praying. The horse is merely rocking and turning pages. Prayer means also an expression of the heart. This is not prayer!” “What do you mean that it is not prayer! ews worldwide are mourning the loss of Reb Meir Schuster, ]W¡O D OHJHQGDU\ Ă€[WXUH DW WKH Kosel who devoted almost forty years of his life to introducing Jews of all stripes to the beauty of their Jewish heritage. R’ Schuster, who suffered from Lewy Body disease, a degenerative and incurable neurological disorder, passed away in Jerusalem at age 71. As many as tens of thousands of baalei teshuva credit R’ Schuster with their return to religious observance. Rabbi Meir Tzvi Schuster was born to Holocaust survivors Morris and Mary Schuster in Milwaukee on January 22nd, 1943. A public school student, the young Meir’s main connection to religious observance was his grandmother, until he began attending an afternoon Hebrew school at age 11, run by Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski. “I knew Meir before his Bar Mitzvah,â€? Rabbi Twerski remembers. “He learned for his Bar Mitzvah in my father’s shul. He was a very sweet, but a very withdrawn child. If anybody had told me at that time that he would EH WKH RQH WR Ă€OO WKH EDDO WHVKXYD yeshivos, I would have said they were crazy.â€? Despite his reserved nature, Rabbi Twerski recalled that the young Meir possessed a special charm which became the basis for his unbelievable success in the kiruv world. “Hashem gave him unbelievable cheyn, and the people he would meet

at the Kosel would follow him like the Pied Piper,� said Rabbi Twerski. “I knew him as Stanley and whenever I would go to the Kosel and would see him from a distance I would call out ‘Hey, Stanley!’ and he knew it was me. The young Meir went on to study at Beis Medrash L’Torah in Skokie in 1958, moving on to Baltimore’s Ner Israel Rabbinical College just two years later, where he would wake up the other bochurim each morning and spend his entire Shabbos learning in the Beis Medrash. Los Angeles resident Rabbi Avi Stewart, a Ner Israel alumnus, recalls that even years later, the yeshiva’s rabbeim still spoke fondly of R’ Schuster’s time at the yeshiva. “We heard over stories about how he used to have a taanis dibbur every Shabbos when he was a bochur and how he would give out cookies to those in the beis medrash at 1 or 2 AM on Friday nights,â€? said Rabbi Stewart. R’ Schuster married his wife, Esther *DUĂ€QNOH RI 0RQWLFHOOR 1HZ <RUN in 1967 and they traveled to Israel in March 1968 to spend a year immersed in learning. TORAH Wanting to capitalize on what could be a once-in-a-lifetime moment, Rabbi Kass approached the young man and asked him if he was interested in learning more about Judaism. Encouraged by his positive reply, the two returned daily and in just a few weeks, R’ Schuster began reaching out on his own to both men and women who came to the Kosel. Over a span of decades he singlehandedly brought tens of thousands back to Yiddishkeit. Author Bracha Goetz found her life transformed in 1978 after meeting up with R’ Schuster in 1978. Having studied at Harvard University, the now Mrs. Goetz was volunteering at Hadassah Hospital’s Oncology ward DIWHU KHU Ă€UVW \HDU RI PHGLFDO VFKRRO Meeting with R’ Schuster at the Kosel, Mrs. Goetz soon found herself in Ohr 6RPD\DFK ZRPHQ¡V SURJUDP IXOĂ€OOLQJ her secret desire to better understand the purpose of life. “Reb Meir is the proof of what one human being is capable of doing,â€? said Mrs. Goetz. “He was by nature a shy type of person, but he saw there was an important job to be done, and so he did it, day in, day out, for decades. Without any fanfare, in the humblest way possible, he dedicated his life to showing thousands of us, one by one, why Judaism was worth preserving. The words from his pure heart entered our hearts, and a great love of Judaism became kindled in countless emanating sparks.â€? Rabbi Aryeh Goetz, who also became observant thanks to R’ Schuster, echoed his wife’s sentiments. “You just thought he was like a regular person,â€? noted Rabbi Goetz. “He was very approachable and he accepted everybody wherever they were at, but he never gave up. I had to go back to my kibbutz program, but a month later I was back in Jerusalem.� At the advice of a friend, the then Larry Goetz contacted Rabbi Noach Weinberg, taking the next step on his journey to religious observance. “The Weinbergs invited me to come to Aish Hatorah and I was open to learning about Judiasm, but it all started with Reb Meir Schuster,� mused Rabbi Goetz. Friday nights were prime time for R’ Schuster as he would approach

visitors to the Kosel and offer them the opportunity to enjoy an authentic Shabbos meal. Leaving the Kosel, often accompanied an entourage of dozens, R’ Schuster would drop people off at various hosts who were happy to share their Shabbos with visitors. The Goetz home was one of the many stops on R’ Schuster’s Friday night route. “We lived in Geula and he would bring people to our house,â€? said Rabbi Goetz. “We once had a Jewish lady with her Eskimo boyfriend, which was interesting. Having those Friday night guests had a tremendous impact on our own lives as we would have the experience of showing people what Shabbos is, what the Torah is and we would feel the excitement of the transformational effect of sharing Shabbos or the Torah with someone who was open to the experience. It was the most exciting time of our lives.â€? Attorney Michael Koplen was another person who was approached by R’ Schuster at the Kosel. “I met Rabbi Schuster at the Kotel LQ Âľ VDLG .RSOHQ ´+H ZDV Ă€VKLQJ for souls, engaged me in conversation and arranged for a Shabbos dinner for a friend and me. I did not make that particular dinner but I vividly remember my encounter with Rabbi Schuster. He was soft spoken and so genuine. You could tell he really cared and it made a life-long impression on me. When one considers all the thousands of people one meets in a lifetime for short conversations and how many are forgotten, the fact that my memory of Rabbi Schuster stands out so vividly means a lot. He was a pure soul and one sensed that purity immediately upon meeting him.â€? It was a 1977 meeting with R’ Schuster that forever changed the life of author Shimon Apisdorf. “Reb Meir is the reason why I am frum and have a frum family today,â€? said Apisdorf. “I came to Israel

for a year of college and was staying at a youth hostel in Jerusalem where I met some other kids who weren’t Jewish. I had been to Israel before DQG , EHFDPH WKH RIĂ€FLDO WRXU JXLGH IRU the day.â€? Taking his friends the Old City, Apisdorf and his friends found themselves at the Kosel, where he was approached by R’ Schuster. “He wanted to take me to a Shabbos meal but I told him I was with friends. He asked me if they were Jewish and when I told him that they weren’t he told me to just go with him. I told him it wasn’t nice to just leave them but he insisted that I do exactly that and we got into a big argument. I was a liberal college kid and I ended up shouting at him until Ă€QDOO\ KH VDLG ÂśFRPH EDFN WRPRUURZ and I will take you to a class.’â€? The class was 48 Ways to Wisdom, given by R’ Noach Weinberg. “I went to one and that got the ball rolling for me,â€? said Apisdorf. In time, Apisdorf found himself joining R’ Schuster, helping him deliver people to the Jerusalem homes where they would enjoy what was SRVVLEO\ WKHLU Ă€UVW HYHU 6KDEERV PHDO “Friday night he would collect ten, twenty, sixty or seventy people at the Kotel and just drop them off at various people’s houses,â€? recalled Apisodorf. “I spent many Friday nights at R’ Schuster’s home, sometimes sleeping there, and seeing him up close and personal, I can tell you that devotion isn’t even a proper word to describe Reb Meir. The entirety of his being was completely focused on his mission. Nothing else existed. Nothing got in his way, stopped him, deterred him, got him down or slowed him down. He just went and went and went. The next person, the next day, day after day, year after year. He just never stopped.â€? As a father raising a family of his own, Apisdorf would tell his children about his encounters with R’ Schuster. “I would tell my children that I don’t know if I ever met one of the lamed vav tzadikim, but if I did, I am

involved in the relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu and everything he did was an outgrowth of that.â€? What made R’ Schuster’s efforts so monumental was that while today there are numerous kiruv programs in operation, things were far different just a few decades ago. “From the early 70’s to the mid 80’s, before there were so many sophisticated outreach programs, a huge percentage of the people who ended up coming through Ohr Somayach, Aish Hatorah, Neve Yerushalayim, D’var Yerushalayim and Diaspora Yeshiva, the early pillars of the kiruv movement, came because of Reb Meir,â€? said Apisdorf. “He had QR DIĂ€OLDWLRQ WR DQ\ RQH SODFH +H brought people to the place he thought best suited their needs.â€? Dovid Winiarz, president of Survival Through Education, saw R’ Schuster as a both a source of inspiration and a personal role model. “I can tell you that, Reb Meir, always loomed larger than life and was the most amateur professional the kiruv world has ever known,â€? said Winiarz. “I say amateur because he just did what ‘regular people’ can do. From beyond the nearly impenetrable veil he had slipped into LQ WKH Ă€QDO PRQWKV RI KLV ORQJ LOOQHVV Reb Meir’s face still lit up bright and his smile beamed as my daughter read him a story titled ‘The Man at the Wall,’ a beautiful, contemplative essay Bracha Goetz authored a few years ago about Reb Meir’s legendary life. I know that he knew at that moment, and I’m quite sure that this was the source of his smile, that this frum girl before him would not be learning at a seminary in Yerushalayim today were it not for his courageous efforts. Nor would thousands of others. Blessed be the memory of Reb Meir Schuster who had an amazing capacity to go beyond his limitations, teaching us all that where passion aligns with purpose, there are no limitations.â€? R’ Schuster is survived by his wife Esther, his four children and many grandchildren.

“We went to see Reb Meir about two and a half years ago when he was already very sick,� said Apisdorf. “We were warned ahead of time that he was practically vegetative and in a non communicative state. We went into him and it was a terrible, terrible sight. I held his hand and told him who I was and he squeezed my hand. I said ‘Reb Meir, I want to tell you about my children,’ and he squeezed my hand again. I told him how much R’ Noach Weinberg had loved him and he squeezed my hand another time. I told Reb Meir that I knew that he had not stopped working for klal yisroel, that I knew he was just doing a different kind of work now and that he would be working for all of us from a higher place. I said, ‘Reb Meir, we need you to be working for us, talking to Hakadosh Baruch Hu from a higher place,’ and he squeezed my hand one last time. I had been told that he wasn’t there anymore, but it was clear that that was not the case.�

Seattle resident Joe Reback founded the website RebMeirSchuster.org in order to raise money for R’ Schuster’s long term care and to keep his many disciples informed of his condition. The site LV Ă€OOHG ZLWK SHUVRQDO UHFROOHFWLRQV submitted by people whose lives were forever altered by R’ Schuster. “Through all the years of my spiritual journey, from my arrival at the Kotel in 1983 as a scruffy 20 something loaded down with a backpack on my way to Africa, to the present day where I am privileged to serve as president of a beautiful Chassidishe shul here in Seattle, no one has cared more passionately about my neshama than Reb Meir Schuster, and I am forever indebted to him.â€? 8 chicken thighs 6 small red potatoes, quartered 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, or as needed

1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh oregano 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Place chicken and potatoes into a large bowl. Pour olive oil over them, and stir to coat. Scatter the chicken and potato pieces in a large baking dish, or cookie sheet with sides. Sprinkle with rosemary, oregano, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, uncovered. Baste during the last 15 minutes for extra crispness.

Don’t Prick the Balloon before it Flies The Torah teaches us that after a call went out for those who could give of themselves to construct the Mishkan, a number of individuals, whose heart stirred within them, came forward, and they were the Mishkan’s builders. This must have been an incredible undertaking, especially since these artisans had no prior experience. It is not as if building sanctuaries was their favorite pastime in Egypt. These people were used for slave labor and nothing else. They were, however, highly motivated by the opportunity to build Hashem’s Mishkan, and this motivation catalyzed them to go forward. When we think about it, this phenomenon is not uncommon. Many people are inspired to move forward, to dedicate themselves to a higher cause, but something happens along the road to success. Well, it is not really “something,” but “someone.” Whether it is someone whose jealousy is concealed in his skepticism or it is a well-meaning friend who just does not want to see us get hurt, our dreams and aspirations are often pinpricked before the balloon can ascend to great heights. Perhaps the following episode will give us a deeper insight. The Lubliner Rav, as he was referred to reverently and affectionately, Horav Meir Shapiro, zl, was certainly a great man. He was a distinguished Rosh Yeshivah, a respected diplomat for his people in the halls of the Polish Parliament and a world class Torah leader. His distinction to us and to most Jews at

One of the individuals in the crowd was a young Rav who introduced himself as the son-in-law of the Shotzer Rebbe, the town where Rav Meir had grown up. Rav Meir looked at him and asked, “Is your rebbetzin here with you?” “In fact, she is,” the young rav replied. “Could I possibly speak with her?” Rav Meir asked. “Certainly,” the Rav answered. “I will go and get her.” When the woman came over, Rav Meir addressed her with the following question: “Do you remember that, as a child, I would learn with your father in your home?” “Yes, I remember,” she replied. This time, when Rav Meir asked the next question, there was a slight tremor in his voice. “Do you recall my grandiose plans to unite all the Jews in the world in the study of the same daf in the Talmud, daily? This way all of Klal Yisrael would be united through Torah.” Then his voice dropped an octave, when he asked, “Do you also remember how all the children would laugh at the idea and mock it, deriving great satisfaction from putting down my idea?” This time the woman remained still. She did not reply. Every man and woman whose heart motivated them to bring for any of the work‌the Bnei Yisrael brought a free-willed offering to Hashem. (35:29) The parsha commences with a description of the tremendous outpouring of generosity toward the construction of the Mishkan. Anybody who has ever had to make an appeal or address a fundraising effort knows that only a percentage - and usually a small percentage of those assembled - will respond favorably - or even at all. Yet, Moshe Rabbeinu’s appeal for the thirteen materials to be used for the Mishkan was so successful that he had to ask the people to

halt their donations. They were so motivated to give that their response was unprecedented. This is what the pasuk is relating to us. The Rosh Yeshivah cites the Malbim, who explains that the purpose of the Mishkan was to create a komah sheleimah, an all-encompassing entity, RI D XQLÀHG .ODO <LVUDHO FRPSULVHG RI all of the various maalos, attributes/ qualities, kochos, individual strengths, talents; and levels of kedushah of the different members of the nation. This goal would be achieved via each one’s individual contribution for the common goal of creating a sanctuary for the Shechinah. Everyone felt and understood that it was not only his efforts alone that created this holy abode, but the work of everyone together in a cumulative effort that achieved this komah sheleimah. This can be achieved only when each Jew views himself as part of the large body of Klal Yisrael. Just as the body is comprised of many organs and limbs, each with its unique function, each with its own individual task that impacts the entire body. True, some organs play a leading role, while others play a supporting role, but they are all part of one body. Thus, if the toe is hurt, the entire body is held captive by the pain. Just as one organ is not envious of another organ, because they are all in this together as components of the body which needs all of them,

so, too, should one Jew not be jealous of another Jew who has been endowed with special talents and acumen. Indeed, one’s heart should swell with pride in the knowledge that Klal Yisrael possesses such talented people. The healthier the body, the healthier are all of the organs. In one of the last Eluls of his life, when he was already weakened with illness and advanced age, the legendary Mashgiach, Horav Yechezkel Levinstein, zl, felt a great desire to speak once again to his beloved students, to impart to them the meaning of the month of Elul, the imperative of serving Hashem on an even higher level than usual. He slowly, painstakingly, and with great effort made his way to the front of the study hall and ascended to the lectern. This act of walking across the room was the result of great mesiras QHIHVK SHUVRQDO VHOI VDFULÀFH 8SRQ reaching the lectern, he no longer had the strength to speak. He was totally spent. So, he slowly returned to his seat. As far as his students were concerned, this was the Elul shmuess, ethical discourse, for which they had hoped. They learned that one must continue in one’s avodas Hashem, service of the Almighty, to the extreme limits of one’s strength.

A Journey Back in Time

F

rom the moment we enter into the Kotel Tunnel, the hands of the clock seem to turn back. In an instant, we are enveloped in other scents, sights and sounds. Even the voice of the tour guide, whose echoes bump into the ancient walls, sounds different and special. The dark, dim lighting takes the imagination backwards, to the time when people walked here, carrying burning torches. The ceiling, above which stand the Arab houses in the Moslem Quarter, erupts in the power of the imagination, and a dark, starspangled sky smiles from above. At the beginning of the tour, we arrive at a large arch which is attached to the Temple Mount. This is the `Wilson Arch,’ named after the explorer Charles Wilson, who discovered it in 1864 (5624). Above the Wilson Arch is the Chain Gate, and beside it is the Gate of the Shechinah. Further on, a double system of domes extends itself, which ends in the Hasmonean Hall. In the hall, which is also used for a gorgeous light and sound production, steps can be seen going up to a hall from a street that reincarnates the period of the Second Temple. In the Kotel Hama’arovi, in the section opposite the hall, several PDVVLYH VWRQHV DUH À[HG WKH ODUJHVW RI which is 13.6 meters long, 3.3 meters high, 4.6 meters deep, and which weighs 570 tons! It is comparable in

size to a bus. +RZ GLG WKH\ PDQDJH WR À[ WKH stones in the Kotel? Today we do not really know. There is a conjecture that stones were rolled from Damascus Gate on wooden poles and, with the aid of 18,000 workers employed by King Herod in the Beis Hamikdosh, they were apparently lifted over an

embankment that was constructed by rolling them on poles. Due to the frequent earthquakes that hit Jerusalem about 1200 years ago, there was a need to renovate parts of the Kotel over and over again, and for this reason stones of a different

type were also set in, giving it a rather uneven appearance. Right after we pass the Warren Gate and the Cave, which is the nickname for the main Jewish synagogue of about a thousand years DJR ZH ÀQG RXUVHOYHV VWDQGLQJ DW the entrance of the Minhara Tzara (narrow tunnel). In the Minhara Tzara, which runs the entire length of the Kotel Hama’arovi, the Kotel stones display interesting carvings. Each stone has three different kinds of borders. The tremendous accuracy which was invested in their hewing makes each a perfect work of art. This beauty, which is concealed in the depths, hidden from the light of day, is only scant evidence of the glory and splendor which reigned in the Beis Hamikdash. It is the silent monument to the golus—lustrous and beautiful in its grief. It is written in the gemora, maseches Succah: One who never saw Jerusalem in her glory, has never seen a beautiful sight before, and one who never saw the Beis Hamikdash when it was built, has never seen a glorious building. The sole remnant of this glory, in its brilliance and splendor, reveals a IUDFWLRQ RI WKDW PDJQLÀFHQFH ZKLFK was destroyed, and conceals twice as much. In the continuation of the narrow cave there is a natural rock, upon which the layers of the Kotel rest. The

MIRACLES rock is part of Har Hamoriah. At the site of the rock are the remnants of a street from the period of the Second Temple. The rounded pillars and still, paved stones of the street appear as if ÀOOHG ZLWK OLIH ,W LV DV LI RQH FDQ KHDU voices, and see long coats, braided straw baskets, and the permanent EOD]LQJ WRUFKHV RI ÀUH DW WKH VLGHV RI the openings. Modern glass panels, upon which are written, in luminous green letters, explanations for the tourists, bring us back to reality in an instant and we continue with the tour. Further ahead, we see deep channels of water underneath the layers of stones. Deep inside those channels, large stones can be seen which had fallen from the Kotel at the time of the Churban, in the same position as they were situated when WKH à DPHV ZHUH EXUQLQJ LQ WKH %HLV Hamikdash. North of the water channels, the remains of a well which was hewn in the period of King Herod can be VHHQ 6HYHUDO PHWHUV IXUWKHU ZH ÀQG ourselves strolling along a street from Herodian times. The paving stones of the street are impressive in their size. Some of them are a meter and a half long. The surfaces of the stones are scaled off, so that people passing to and fro should not slip. The street boulevard is encompassed by circular pillars, adorned with writings. According to historical evidence, this street served as a workshop and for markets. Here ends the quarrying of the Kotel. Some relate its end to the death of King Herod. From here on, the Kotel gradually disappears, the more one advances northward. In its place was left a stone quarry that was GHÀQLWHO\ RQH RI WKH VRXUFHV IRU WKH stones used to construct the walls of the Har Habayis. Before disappearing, the Kotel

makes a turn to the west, creating a kind of tower. In the area of the tower a few stones have been preserved, which have on them the markings RI WKH Ă€UVW VWRQH FXWWLQJV WKDW ZHUH done in the nearby quarry. A few meters further on, the Kotel ends, and it bisects a large aqueduct, which is the well-known Hasmonean tunnel. The aqueduct was discovered about 140 years ago by Charles Warren, the explorer. It was then Ă€OOHG ZLWK ZDWHU DERXW PHWHUV deep. Today, it has a fair amount of dampness from the water which permeated to it through its walls, which are hewn in the rock. The water canal was covered over in certain sections, and thereby became a tunnel. According to Charles Warren, who explored Israel between 1867 and 1870, the source of the water canals was on the north side, from a spring outside of Yerushalayim. The water channel is ten meters high, and it becomes progressively taller going from the south side to the north. The channel is carved in this shape so that it can reach the optimal level to convey the water. The Hasmonean tunnel is located at the end of the Kotel tunnels. At the end of the Hasmonean tunnel there is a new tunnel, which was built by people working for the Ministry of Religions ten years ago. The entrance to the new tunnel faces the Moslem Quarter. Here ends the tour of the Hasmonean Tunnel. We step across the tunnel which was built by employees of the Ministry of Religion, and then out to the Moslem Quarter. The evil stares of the Arabs, which are thrown at us as we pass, are further testimony to the golus in which we live. When we arrive back at the Kosel Hama’arovi plaza, a prayer is on everyone’s lips: “Uvnei Yerushalayim ir Hakodesh bimheiroh beyomeinu.â€? How did this amazing testament

to Jewish glory come to be excavated? Years ago, the Hasmonean tunnel was opened to serve as the exit door leading out of the Western Wall tunnels. The opening of the tunnel triggered a wave of widespread riots in the occupied territories. The opening, which began as a local ceremony, quickly sprung onto headlines worldwide. Despite the thorny events, the Hasmonean tunnel has remained open, and thousands visit the Western Wall tunnels every year. The sights revealed during the tour to the tunnels are an instructive and thrilling proof of what is no more, and what will one day be restored— besiyata deShmaya in the Geula that is to come. The savage attack occurred in the city of Shechem. The building that was surrounded was the grave of Yosef. The date was Thursday, the 13th of Tishrei, 5757 (1996), erev chag Succos, almost ten years ago. Echoes of gunshots reverberated through the air. A platoon of IDF soldiers found itself besieged in the building, completely surrounded by a furious DQG LQĂ DPHG PRE ´,WEDFK HO <DKXG Âľ (Butcher the Jews) and similar cries of slaughter and vengeance on the Jews were heard from all sides. Thousands of Arabs with venomous LQWHQW FDUU\LQJ VPRNLQJ ULĂ HV ZDYHG 3DOHVWLQLDQ DQG +DPDV Ă DJV 0LQXWH E\ PLQXWH LQĂ DPHG ZLWK murderous passions, they moved closer and closer to the building. Palestinian police in the area joined the mob at a certain stage, and ODXQFKHG D SRZHUIXO DQG DFFXUDWH Ă€UH from the roofs of the houses and from nearby streets at the besieged soldiers. The consequences were severe. A few soldiers fell almost instantly. The rest, with their remaining strength, sent out the alert for reinforcements from the IDF unit in the area. The reinforcements also met a KHDY\ EXUVW RI JXQĂ€UH ZKHQ WKH\ arrived. Some of the vehicles were

An IDF helicopter which tried to reach the site was unable to land because of the bullets Ă \LQJ WKURXJK WKH DLU ,W ZDV RQO\ hours later that the IDF forces, with a massive effort, managed to rescue the trapped soldiers. When it was all over, the extent of the tragedy became clear: seven had been killed and eight wounded. The attack on Yosef’s kever in Shechem was one in a series of episodes that occurred throughout the occupied territories. It appeared that a new Intifadah had broken out, and the IDF forces in all sectors suffered serious losses. The violent outbreaks in the territories were, claimed the Palestinians, a reaction to “the insolent Israeli provocation carried out with the encouragement and under the instructions of the Israeli

Prime Minister.â€? That “insolent provocationâ€? was the decision, together with its implementation, to break through an extra opening in the “Western Wall tunnels.â€? Up until that time, this entrance, which is located at the end of the Hasmonean tunnel, had been closed to visitors. Opening up the WXQQHO LQĂ DPHG WKH WHUULWRULHV DQG the Palestinians raised a worldwide clamor. According to them, opening the tunnel was only a part of an overall Israeli plot to bring anarchy to the Arab world and, consequently, to the entire world. Although the Arab claims were EDVHOHVV DQG IDOVH WKH Ă€UH WKDW ZDV kindled throughout the occupied territories had, as noted earlier, LQWHUQDWLRQDO UDPLĂ€FDWLRQV 7KH WRS ranks of the Israeli decision makers,

headed by then prime minister Binyomin Netanyahu, were given wide, but not necessarily sympathetic, coverage. Only after several days of Ă€JKWLQJ DQG WHQVH LQFLGHQWV GLG WKH episode come to a close. “This is a testing time between us and the Arabs, who are attempting to achieve their ends by pressure. After three months of convalescing from major surgery - during which exertion was limited to putting on thighhigh white circulation socks - I looked like the Marshmallow Man. I had gained so much weight! My doctor recommended daily walks. 2Q P\ Ă€UVW PRUQLQJ RXW P\ neighbor Gedalia doubled back, stopped his car beside me and rolled down the window. “Car break down?â€? “Nope, just walking.â€? I replied. Gedalia, who walks the equivalent of the Appalachian Trail around his 120-acre farm every day, frowned. “Get in. I’ll give you a ride.â€? I told him it was doctor’s orders. I needed to regain my strength and stamina. “Get in,â€? Gedalia repeated. “I’ll give you a ride.â€? After a stop at the general store for coffee and doughnuts, I returned home IURP WKH Ă€UVW GD\ RI P\ QHZ H[HUFLVH routine having walked the distance of a standard living room, and eaten two glazed doughnuts. So began my workout. On day two, it was the same story, different neighbor. When Gedalia’s cousin Chaim stopped, I politely declined, explaining I had to lose weight. “Yeah, that’s what Gedalia said,â€?

Continental to Italian to Chinese to sushi, and its elegant art-deco design, NY Kosher Steakhouse and Deli is simultaneously sophisticated yet family friendly. A recent write-up in Dining Magazine proclaimed, “Don’t come because it’s kosher; come because it’s great.� It’s almost impossible to get U.S. Prime-grade Glatt Kosher beef. But at NY Steakhouse and Deli, all the meat is U.S. prime –graded Glatt kosher, and totally irresistible. If somebody orders a cowboy steak or a prime rib steak during Pesach, rest assured you’re getting the best quality meat anywhere. NY Kosher Steakhouse and Deli is known for its emphasis on healthy cuisine using the freshest ingredients and Rapp does not make any compromises when preparing for Pesach. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style, with a wide variety of dishes offered, while dinner is a more formal affair, with a choice of four different entrees. The tea room is open mid-morning and afternoon. All the food is non-gebrokts and the restaurant provides hand shemurah matzah for the first two days of Yom Tov. The NY Kosher Steakhouse and Deli is located at the Days Inn hotel, a newly-renovated and meticulously maintained establishment with large, airy rooms and excellent service. The hotel has a pool, and another pool offering separate swimming is located less than a block away, as is the nearest shul. “Last year we hosted around one hundred guests,� says Rapp. “We prefer not to exceed this number, as it would detract from the level of service we provide. We had a mixed crowd, from black-hatters to Modern Orthodox, and everyone had a great time. Mostly people were delighted to find such quality of food and service at such affordable prices, easily rivaling the big hotels.�
