y nature, I’m a procrastinator. I had been pushing off a visit to the eye doctor, busy as I was with recent Yom Tov preparations. But when my daughter came home from school complaining that she couldn’t see the blackboard clearly and that she’d failed a recent Reading Comprehension test, I knew an appointment with the optometrist could no longer be avoided.The only question was; to whom would I entrust the treatment of her precious baby blues? I asked around for a recommendation and found that Dr. Meira Schipper was the unquestionable gold standard in eye care. Dr. Schipper graduated in 2010 from SUNY College of Optometry with a first rate education in all areas of medical eye care including the diagnoses, treatment and management of Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetic and hypertensive Retinopathies, as well as dry eye and ocular allergies . She also offers contact lens fittings, vision therapy treatment and optical

dispensing at her practice. Since then, she’s been providing our neighborhood with the very best in eye care and eye wear. At the conclusion of my daughter’s comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Schipper explained to me that although my daughter needed glasses she also needed something called vision therapy. So, what exactly is vision therapy? Even if a person has 20/20 vision with or without glasses, there can still be eye issues causing reading difficulties and poor concentration. Vision therapy is a customized program of visual activities designed to correct certain vision problems and/or improve visual skills. At the appointment, Dr. Schipper explained to me parents call her all the time in confusion. Their children are smart but for some reason they are falling behind in school once they get to first and second grade. These students have poor reading skills, as well as poor concentration and attention. In these cases, a regular eye examination for glasses is not enough. There are other eye-related

issues that can be the root of their problems. For example, in some instances the eyes are not working well together, causing eye strain and/ or double vision. Another issue may be poor accommodation or focusing skills. These children are working so hard to clear print up close that they have no energy left for reading comprehension or understanding of reading material. Unlike eyeglasses and contact lenses, which simply compensate for vision problems, vision therapy aims to “teach” the visual system to correct itself. It is like physical therapy for the eyes and the parts of the brain that control vision. There are very few optometrists offering vision therapy in the Brooklyn/Boro Park area and what sets Dr. Schipper apart from those that do is that the vision therapy in her office is done one-on-one with her alone. She has not hired any staff to be trained to do it for her. Dr. Schipper has state of the art equipment in her office, including a 50-inch computer monitor with vision therapy programs t h a t

can be done in 3-D. The kids love it! She has worked with many, many children with these issues, observing life changing results. Often, children graduate vision therapy with drastically improved reading skills, reading speed and understanding.These children also develop excellent concentration and attention in schoolrelated areas with improved grades - not to mention how much their confidence goes up! The children she works with love coming to therapy sessions because they realize how much it is helping them. Dr. Schipper says, “It is one of the most fulfilling parts of my practice and I love working with the kids.” Dr. Schipper realizes that to patients, seeing well with their glasses is of utmost importance. That’s why special time and attention is given to refractions, which are also done solely by the doctor. In her office, there is a beautiful optical
dispensary with glasses in many shapes, sizes and colors to please the
most discerning customers. Her very reasonable pricing also keeps loyal clients coming back - together with many, much-appreciated referrals! Understanding how important frame selection is, every patient is given the time and attention needed to make their decision. T
his Parsha starts with Hashem telling Avram to “Lech Licha” – go for you. Rashi asks, what is the meaning of the seemingly superfluous word “Licha” - for you? Rashi clarifies Licha to mean “for your pleasure and benefit.” The Meforshim then ask a profound question on this Rashi: Why use two words to explain one? Why not just say that Licha means “for your pleasure?” Why does Rashi have to say both “for your pleasure and for your benefit?” Aren’t pleasure and benefit essentially the same thing? One answer is brought down in seforim, and this pshat should bring chizuk to all who decipher it. The seforim explain that no, pleasure and benefit are not mutually exclusive. We all have our individual set of hardships and difficulties, which we endure at different points in our lives. Every one of us initially had a dream, a vision, of how we wanted or lives to look – but Hashgacha brought us to different crossroads than the ones we originally anticipated. Sometimes we look at other people’s lives and wish we could trade places. We want what others have and we say to ourselves, if I would have the same as my neighbor, friend or relative, then I would be much
better off. But that’s not a true assumption. What is good for one is not necessarily good for another. A different situation may seem pleasurable, but may not be beneficial. Just as no one

Shalom Bayis was lost because of jealousy over money issues? How many people go about their whole lives unhappily, imagining how much better their days would be if they could only experience the pleasure that someone else has. But how can you be jealous of someone’s wealth without knowing anything about his health, nachas, shalom bayis, or other life circumstances?! Sometimes things look good on the outside, but if we were to swap places we’d find that those same set of circumstances that seem perfect for another, would actually be greatly disadvantageous for us. This is what Rashi is trying to teach us. Not everything that is for our pleasure, is also for our benefit. Some things that may look and feel good for us, may actually be to our detriment. Hashem said to Avram, “Lech Licha” - Not only will the going be for your pleasure, which is not always good for you; it will also be for your benefit!

have a secret place I go to, when I need to ‘get away from it all.’ I think of this corner eatery as my own European hideaway, although it’s located in the very heart of Boro Park. Whenever I’m stressed and in need of a vacation, I know I can easily find all the elegance and charm of an international sojourn, right here in my own community. Not many of us can afford an overseas flight to enjoy the suave sophistication of Paris, with its winding passageways, enchanting courtyards and lamplit streets. That’s why Café Paris brings all the allure and charisma of the Champs Elysees, to the bustle of Brooklyn. Lavender recessed lights reflect a cozy ambiance, as white clothed tables boast matching purple napkins. Muted shades of grey and brown accentuate the room’s comfortable but classy décor. The Eiffel Tower stands in background attendance as soft, lyrical music drifts through the room, mingling with the sounds of muted laughter, clinking glasses
and the chiming of forks against fine china. This is my personal favorite in restaurants: Café Paris. On the corner of 16th Avenue and 45th Street, Café Paris evokes a feeling of welcome and tranquility, while the mood transports diners to the mystique of faraway shores. It’s just recently been renovated, and the owners are holding nothing back when it comes to making their customers feel pampered and well
fed. Café Paris offers menus filled with delicacies too numerous to mention, and too savory to choose from. They specialize in a healthy selection of gourmet fare, with many gluten-free dishes that include no

flour or sugar. An incredible variety of salads and quiches, whole wheat pasta, quinoa and brown rice make their food not only astoundingly good, but equally good for you. I have never been particularly health conscious in my diet, and when I first ventured in to Café Paris I was only looking for a meal that was tasty – not nutritious. And indeed, their assortment of entrees caters to the penchants of every palate, with many dishes that are made of the de riguer sugar, flour and fat. But since I was feeling adventurous at the time, I decided to try one of their wholesome culinary masterpieces. I chose the Portabella Mushroom with melted cheese for an appetizer, their famed Cabucci Soup, and their Mesclun Mix salad with apples and cashews in a sweet, balsamic dressing with pine nuts. Wow. I never knew healthy food could taste that succulent. Since then, I’ve been to Café Paris countless times, to imbibe everything from Kibbe stuffed with mushrooms, to angel hair pasta al pomodoro with

tomato sauce, garlic and olive, to Sole du Eiffel stuffed with spinach and fresh seasoning or grilled vegetables in almond sauce. Thanks to Café Paris, I’ve never been so full, or so healthy, in my life. Café Paris is an eclectic dairy restaurant, serving everything from pasta to fish, salads to sandwiches, wraps to paninis, and a whole array of vegetarian provender. They boast a variety of coffees, teas and heavenly, decadent desserts. Cakes with every kind of filling imaginable tempt diners to taste. Cheese cake, chocolate mousse, chocolate volcano with ice cream, melt-in-your-mouth muffins, crème caramel, crème brulle… the choices make my head spin and my tongue tingle. Choose from their flavorful fettucini alfredo, their palatable penne vodka, their succulent salmon... The list goes on and on. No matter which entrée you
decide on, there’s never a less-than-perfect portion. A most unique was to quench your thirst is with their Café de Paris Health Bar, offering vitaminrich drinks in a choice of fruits and vegetables. Try the Ruby Jewel, which is comprised of carrots, apples and beets blended to juice and guaranteed to clear the mind. There’s also a sensational choice of tropical fruit shakes mixed with apple juice, water or milk to give your body an invigorating and fortifying lift. With seating for fifty couples, Café Paris is ‘the’ place to cater an affair. The proprietors give every event their own personal touch,
with elaborate floral centerpieces or elegant candelabras, creating a beautiful presentation for their flavorsome food. For parties, simchos, or just for fun - taking family and friends to this graceful, gourmet French-motif restaurant is certain to make them feel special. They’ll be waited upon hand and glove with service that simply outdoes itself. I should really have kept Café Paris all to myself. After all, once you read this you’ll be flocking through its doors faster than the speed of sound. I’ll be sharing my secret, European hideaway with many. Still, I figured the time had come for others to know about this divine dining location. It is my preferred, premier restaurant - and once you experience it for yourself, it will surely become your personal favorite as well.

Off The Derech Children
T
he following is a controversial article that appeared recently online. It was written anonymously, and it engendered many heated comments from readers. Where do you stand on this important community issue? Write in to The Buzz and let us know what you think… One of the hottest topics in the religious world is the tragic phenomenon of teens “at risk” who then go “off the Derech.” This topic usually comes up during the beginning of the Yeshiva year, when those teenagers are seen roaming around while their counterparts are using their time productively. Many parents are struggling with the pain of having one child (or a few) lose their interest in Judaism often called “The Shrinking Syndrome,” when the boy’s beard and the girl’s skirt shrink to unrecognizable proportions. When this tragedy strikes the first reaction is to find a scapegoat; some parents will blame the schools

while others will blame the friends, and yet others will blame G-d. At some point the parents will find the courage to take the blame themselves, but most will never understand how they caused it or how to fix it; they will take the wrong steps and cause the next siblings to follow this crooked path. After years of research, learning and talking to various Rabbis and Mechanchim I have come to the somber realization that the blame lays squarely on the parents’ shoulders. There might be an odd one out, but the vast majority of “drop-outs” are because something was missing in their home. Being a Dugma Chaya The key to prevention is being a “Dugma Chaya,” a living example of a Frum, happy Jew who respects G-d, who respects Rabbonim and respects other people. A child has to be shown the correct path with love, and he will choose to follow.
A child who sees his father waking up early in the morning to go Daven with a Minyan, and sees his father actually Davening in Shul will develop a love to go to Shul, and he will love to Daven. This love has to be nurtured and preserved by adapting to the child’s needs: A young child should only Daven the basic parts of Davening and run around the rest of Davening. As he grows up he will add more parts to Davening. On the other hand, a child who sees his father wasting his time at home before Davening, then he sees him talking in Shul during Chazaras Hashatz and during Krias Hatorah, will never develop a love for Davening. And if the father will schlepp him to Shul and force him to Daven, and make him repeat parts of Davening then I can guarantee that this child will grow up hating G-d, hating Davening and hating his two-faced father. A child who sees his father coming home from work and

sitting and learning Chitas and Rambam, or running out to a Shiur, or repeating over an interesting thought of Torah will grow up to love the study of Torah. He will spend his days studying diligently and wouldn’t need to be forced to learn. On the other hand, a child who sees his father coming home from work and sitting on the computer reading news sites or reading a newspaper, then he overhears him discussing the latest politics or repeating the latest “good line” from a talk-show host, will develop a distaste for Torah. He will never look at Torah as a fountain of life, rather as a burden which should be dropped as soon as possible. A child who sees his father speaking respectfully about Rabbis and teachers, breaking up negative conversations about people, will develop sensitivity towards other people and a respect towards the Rabbis who represent the Torah. He will always respect the Torah, and will consult with a Rov when needed. On the other hand, a child who sees his father badmouthing the local Rabbonim, badmouthing the teacher or principal that dared to rebuke his child, and having Lashon-Hara conversations in Shul will think that every Rabbi is a faker, and he will strive to be “real,” to drop any semblance of Judaism, because in his mind it equals lies and deception. A child who sees her mother dress according to Halacha, with skirts covering the knees even while sitting or driving, with stockings even in the summer, with the elbows covered even while washing dishes, with the head completely covered even in the house, with a Shaitel every time she walks out the door will develop sensitivity towards Tznius. The girls will always follow the Halacha and not look for loopholes, and the boys will look to marry someone who upholds those standards.
At some point, the parents will find the courage to take the blame themselves. On the other hand, a girl who sees her mother using the shortest skirts possible with slits, who will use flip-flops from Purim to Sukkos, who will show her elbows and neck without flinching, who will walk in the street with a Tichel that covers the same amount of hairs as a Yarmulke will take it to a new level, and drop it altogether. The Happy Mode A key to success is happiness and excitement. If there is happiness in the house – the child will always strive to have that happiness in his own life. When a child sees his parents keeping Torah and Mitzvos because they are happy and excited about it, the child will try to have

the same happiness and excitement in his life, knowing that the way to have it is by keeping Torah and Mitzvos. It is proven that girls, who see their mothers happy about the clothing they wear, and not complaining the whole time about the “stuffy” and “Khumeini” rules, will follow the path of their parents. If there is a bitterness and sadness about keeping a Mitzvah, there is no reason why the next generation should strive to continue that sadness in their lives. This happiness and excitement should not be limited only to doing Mitzvos, for a happy home creates happy children. The home should be always a happy place, a place the child looks forward to coming back to, with parents who are happy in their personal lives and will show happiness to their children. A child should be able to come home even with a low-grade on a test and know that he will be greeted by a warm and loving home, that his parents will not unleash uncontrollable fury on him; rather they will still be happy and excited to have him home. If a child connects the home with punishment he will strive to stay away from it; he will try to find the reason for the lack of happiness and he will blame it on being Frum, thinking that if his parents wouldn’t be Frum – they would be happy, and the next step is obviously – dumping Judaism. The Right Education Besides being a Dugma Chaya, the child should be taught how to be a Frum Jew. He should be taught the difference between Halacha, Minhag, Chumra and Meshugaas. The child has to know that keeping Shabbos is Halacha, Tehillim on Shabbos Mevorchim is a Minhag, buying Kemach cereals is a Chumra and eating five vegetables on Pesach is a Meshugaas. If a child sees that Halacha, Minhagim,

Chumrahs and Meshugaas are all bundled into one category, and he is forced to do all of them as if they are “Mitzvos De’oraysah,” he will grow to reject them all thinking that if he needs his sleep on Shabbos and he didn’t finish Tehillim on Shabbos Mevorchim he is automatically a Shaygetz, and therefore he doesn’t have to keep Shabbos at all. A child should first be taught to keep the Mitzvos De’oraysah, like keeping Shabbos and saying Shma in the morning on time, and he should know that these are the basics. Then he should be trained to keeping Mitzvos De’rabanan like waiting between meat and milk, that he should slowly be trained
until the age of 9, when he could start waiting six hours; Davening, that he should start by saying the basic parts of Shacharis like Ashrei and Shmoneh Esre, and then slowly adding more parts until he is of age to do the whole Davening. Minhagim come next, Tehillim Shabbos Mevorchim and Mikve should be 100% optional for a child, he can say as little or as much Tehillim as he wants and he should receive a prize for it, Mikve is something that should be done in the right time. An eight year old child doesn’t have to go to Mikve Shabbos morning at 8am, and then say the whole Tehillim and then Daven the whole Shabbos
Shacharis. Chumrahs should not be imposed on the child at all; the father can do the Chumrah alone and explain it to the child and the child will then decide if he wants to keep it or not. Something which is 100% Kosher with a good Hechsher should be allowed into the house. If the father doesn’t want to eat it – fine, but don’t impose it on the child. If he thinks that the only Kosher products are those with a CHK then he will eat OU-D when no one is looking… The reason for educating based on importance is because standards are varying, and there are many Frumme Yidden from other communities who will not say Tehillim on Shabbos Mevorchim, who will eat a tomato on Pesach, who might even trim their beards, but they are still Frum and keep every Halacha in Shulchan Aruch. Controlling a child and imposing everything on him will breed rejection and resentment. There are enough reasons for children to drop everything, and we should not be giving them any more reasons. Let them see the light and choose life. If the child is given the choice between good and bad – he will choose the good, as long as it will give him a happy and peaceful life. This choice is in the hands of the parents, as I was told by a “dropout:” an “off the derech” child is the result of an “off the rocker” parent… Comments: 1. Sticking the parents as usual. Very popular. 2. The author does not mention who he or she is...but I do not agree. The author is using parents as a scapegoat. I have a few daughters who dress very tzniusdik, and a few who do not... I have always dressed tzniusdik at home, never complained about it, my kids used to call me old fashioned, too tzniusdik, etc. They did not learn from me their lower standards of tznius.

I believe peer pressure and society in general is affecting many kids negatively. I am not saying parents are never to blame, but to put the blame squarely on the parents is being unrealistic in today’s world. The most chassidish homes are being affected and those fathers go to shul, those mothers dress properly... somehow the kids are picking up other ideas and I believe it has more to do with outside influences. 3. A few years ago I would have agreed with this article, but today I know of two families where two children (both boys) are not exactly frum and the families are caring and warm. Sometimes it’s just lacking the Sayata D’Shemya, the communication and openness from the parents are not what that particular child needs. 4. A “renowned educator” that is able to offer so many “proven” facts, that are well “known” yet doesn’t show one footnote so that the reader can go to the sources and educate themselves, makes me wonder about the quality of his education. I find this article insulting and degrading to the majority of parents living with the pain of having a child who is challenged in areas of Yiddishkait. To make such simplistic observations and to dismiss parents as lacking in tznius, love, yiras shomayim and lacking education is not only ignorant, it is terribly insensitive. To be so confident about the cause and effect of this malady that affects a majority of ALL our households in one form or another is the height of arrogance. To write such a condemning article and not put your name to it takes cowardice to another level. I wish you no evil G-D forbid, but for the Grace of G-D you aren’t in the position to judge. Perhaps you would do better to take to heart the adage “Kishoit atzmecho....” 5. The educators blame the parents, the parents blame the educators; how wonderful. How convenient. Now no one has to do anything about it. Is it possible that sometimes it’s the educators/school’s fault? Could it be bad friends at camp/school? Why are there very Chassidishe

families with one/two children that ‘went-off’ and the rest of the family are good Chassidishe children? (If the house was not a warm home, as this writer suggests, then how did all the other children turn out good?) In sum; one has no right to blame another, each case of ‘going-off’ is a case for itself. Educators AND parents equally, need to do more to save our children. 6. This article is wrong. I had a great relationship with my parents until I went off the derech (not so great afterward). I basically all my life had questions that were put aside by my Rabbis and never answered, and as I grew older I stopped believing in religion entirely. It had nothing to do with my parents. 7. As a social worker, I have to say that this is a terrible article. There are no sources to back up your information, and no signature (?). Whereas the parents may have had some influence in the child’s decision to go off the derech, there are usually multiple reasons or experiences that caused the child to ultimately leave Yiddishkeit. Each situation has to be looked at individually. If it were as easy as you say, that by just putting good in front of the child he will pick
good, then Hashem wouldn’t have had to tell us, “I put before you good and evil, CHOOSE GOOD so that you and your descendants will live.” Especially in this generation, when things are so unclear and ambiguous, choosing good is not so simple, apparent, nor appealing. Your article is too cliched and short sighted. 8. I would like to thank the author for this great article. This is a very hot and controversial topic and I think every parent should read this one. Unfortunately there are parents for whom it’s a very personal and emotional issue and I’m not surprised to see so many negative comments. Like the author mentioned, it is human nature to look for a scapegoat and not to look honestly at oneself to examine one’s own actions. If you notice, none of the negative comments critique specific points in the article. It is mostly just genera,l unsubstantiated attacks against the author. And if the author were to provide his real name you would see a bunch of personal attacks as well. Are there any specific suggestions mentioned by the author that you don’t agree with? Some of the negative comments start out right away with
scapegoating - machlokes in the community, teachers, schools, peers, society in general - everybody else but “me.” How is it that majority of the kids that live in the same communities, learn with the same teachers, live in the same society turn out fine? Of course the negative comments ask the reverse - “How is it that the warm, Chassidishe family with ten Chassidishe kids has one offthe-derech child?!?” Well, not all children are the same. Perhaps that one child needed special attention. Maybe the parents, seeing how well their other kids are turning out, “relaxed” a little bit thinking that they were immune. Only the parents themselves can answer that after an honest cheshbon nefesh. The bottom line is - Hashem has entrusted you and only you with the upbringing of your kids. At the end of the day no one but you can be held responsible. Hashem does not test a person with a challenge he/she cannot handle, so stop the blame game and learn from the great points in this article and with G-d’s help your kids will grow up to be bnei Torah who bring nachas to Klal Yisroel.

ur wonderful year full of parnassah, health, and nachas from the kids has been signed and sealed. Succos is over. What do we do now, sit back and wait for the money to start rolling in? That would be a colossal mistake, says Rav Shimshon Pincus. Your good year is given as a coupon. It is the famous “Petek” from Hoshana Rabba. You now need to go to one of the distribution centers to cash it in. Where are those centers? Is there a listing by city or country? Those centers are your local Shuls. Just like all the trees and vegetation were created during the six days of creation yet they waited below ground and did not sprout until Adam davened to Hashem ,so
too the abundance of shefa waiting for us in Shamayim will not come down until we call up to Hashem and ask for it. Every year, millions upon millions of dollars, good health and lots of nachas are left with the master Treasurer in Heaven simply because the people with the winning numbers didn’t bother to pick it up. This year, make sure that you are not one of them. Rain after Succos, Dew after Pesach The difference between rain and dew is that rain originates from the earth below. After the vapor condenses in the skies, it then falls back to earth, giving life to the world. Dew originates in Shamayim and is not stimulated by the earth below. It
is a gift from Shamayim. This, says the Bnei Yissaschar, is analogous to Pesach and Succos. Pesach is a gift of freedom. It is not something we earn. Each year Hashem renews and refreshes us with the gift of freedom as we are born anew. Succos is the celebration of our being cleansed after a month of our hard work, as we repair ourselves with Tshuvah. Therefore, Pesach is the time to bless the Tal. It too, is a gift without any input from us. Succos is a time to bless the rain. The rain symbolizes the fruit of our effort that we exerted during Elul and Tishrei. After we send our Tshuvah up to Hashem, Hashem resends it back to us down below in the form of life. בס "ד

Rav Ovadia Yosef A personal eulogy BY DANIEL BOUSKILA It was early Monday morning here in the Old City of Jerusalem. We had just finished our minyan in the Rabban Yohanan Ben Zakkai synagogue, the same synagogue where generations of Sephardic Chief Rabbis have been crowned as the Rishon L’Zion. I walked over to the bookcase, and my heart was drawn to a large volume titled “Yabia Omer.” I sat over coffee studying, and when I turned on the radio, I heard that Rav Ovadia Yosef was in critical condition. I spent the morning immersed in “Yabia Omer,” until the bitter news was announced: “Rav Ovadia Yosef has passed on to heaven.” He was 93. “Yabia Omer” is one of several halakhic books written by Rav Ovadia Yosef, arguably this generation’s most knowledgeable rabbinic scholar. I have enjoyed a lifelong personal history with Rav Ovadia and his books, dating back to my childhood in Los Angeles. In
his memory, I would like to share two personal experiences with Rav
Ovadia that will always stay with me, and that were ever present in my mind as I walked with hundreds of thousands to lead him to his final resting place in Jerusalem. In 1975, when Rav Ovadia first

came to Los Angeles, I was 11 years old. Our entire school went to the airport to greet him with songs, and the few Sephardim amongst us approached him to kiss his hand, as is our custom. After speaking at our school, Rav Ovadia was scheduled to speak all over Los Angeles. A schedule of his appearances was distributed, and my father promised to take me to hear him every night. I was excited, because I thought his robe and turban were from another world, and he looked so cool in his dark sunglasses. (His eyes were very sensitive to light.) I was also amazed at how he stood in front of audiences without a single book or note cards, and quoted pages of Talmud by heart. My father took me to hear him for three consecutive nights. One night, my father had to work late, and he asked my mother to take me. Of all nights to ask my mother, this was the one night where Rav

Ovadia was speaking in a yeshiva, where no women would be in attendance. My mother took me, and upon arrival, she was, indeed, the only woman there. We stood outside contemplating what to do, when Rav Ovadia suddenly arrived. As he walked by us, he greeted my mother, and when I kissed his hand, he gave me a loving caress on my cheek. I guess by now he recognized me from the previous nights! He walked into the Beit Midrash, and my mother and I stayed outside. Apparently he noticed that we did not come inside, for, less than a minute later, he walked back outside and signaled
to us to come in. As we walked in – a woman in pants with her 11-yearold son – to a room filled with men, Rav Ovadia respectfully asked the men in the first row to make room for me and my mother. He then got onto the stage to speak, and started by looking at my mother and saying, “Blessed are the parents who raise their children in the path of Torah.” Many years later, with this warm memory of Rav Ovadia embedded deep in my heart, I found myself in New York in my third year of Yeshiva University’s rabbinical program. It was 1991, and Rav Ovadia was scheduled to visit us for

a week. As one of the few Sephardic rabbinical students at YU, I was given a tremendous honor: To be his shamash (personal assistant) for the week. I spent morning, noon and night with him, getting to know him personally. I met the family man, studied with the scholar, and even got a glimpse of the powerful politician. Of the many experiences that I was privileged to be a part of that week, one stands out in my mind. A group of us were walking with Rav Ovadia on Amsterdam Avenue, on the Washington Heights campus of Yeshiva University. Dressed in his majestic robe and turban, Rav Ovadia was scheduled to give us a lecture explaining why – contra to all other rabbinic opinions – he had boldly recognized the Ethiopians as Jews, thus paving the way for their acceptance in Israel. As a Sephardic Jew who had suffered from discrimination in Israel, he was sensitive to their plight. As we approached the auditorium, a Latino-Catholic family was walking toward us, and they saw the rabbi dressed in his robe. They sensed he was a holy man, and as they approached us, they came before him and bowed in reverence. You had to see the look on all of the rabbi’s faces when Rav Ovadia stopped and reverently bowed back to them. I have studied Rav Ovadia’s books my entire life, including this morning. But more than anything he’s ever written, these two experiences taught me life lessons of Derech Eretz. They also taught me that underneath the at times harsh exterior of this larger than life public figure, there was a sweet, sensitive and kind-hearted man.

Report: Israel eyes anti-Iran security pact with gulf states
I
srael, alarmed at the prospect of a U.S.Iranian rapprochement, is reported to be discussing the possibility of an antiIran alliance with longtime Arab adversaries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, a project that could have immense ramifications in the Middle East. If talks are under way, they’re in large part the result of many secret meetings between Israeli and Arab intelligence chiefs and other senior officials that have been held over several years, often in the Jordanian capital Amman. Senior Israelis have held meetings with prominent figures from a number of Persian Gulf and other Arab states in recent weeks in an attempt to muster a new alliance capable of blocking Iran’s drive, Israel’s Channel 2 television reported Wednesday. The report said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who has vociferously opposed what appears
to be a determined effort by U.S. President Barack Obama to pursue reconciliation with Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, supervised these “intensive meetings.” Channel 2 said a “high-ranking official” from an Arab state secretly visited Israel for talks. It gave no details. The Times of Israel observed that the report was published a day after the hawkish Netanyahu declared during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York that shared concerns over Tehran’s nuclear project “have led many of our Arab neighbors to recognize ... that Israel is not their enemy.” He said this “affords us the opportunity to overcome historic animosities and build new relationships, new friendships, new hopes.” Saudi Arabia and the other Sunni Muslim monarchies share some of Israel’s strategic concerns. They are also concerned about

Shiite Iran’s nuclear objectives and its influence across the oil-rich gulf and the Levant, just as Israel is, and favor direct action to curb Iranian expansionism. Netanyahu has repeatedly threatened pre-emptive and unilateral Israeli military action against Iran’s nuclear program and has been held in check largely by pressure from Washington and the forceful opposition of his senior commanders. Netanyahu and his hard-line associates have said they no longer believe that Obama would use military force against Iran to prevent it acquiring nuclear weapons. Israel has diplomatic relations with two Arab states, peace partners Egypt and Jordan. It had clandestine dealings with Amman under the late King Hussein long before it signed its peace treaty with the Hashemite kingdom in 1994. Israel and GCC states all use U.S. military systems and the battlehardened Israelis would no doubt he happy to do the heavy lifting if there was any action. Selling such a proposition to Arab populations, who for decades have been taught to hate the Jewish state, would prove far more problematical and politically explosive. But the monarchies and Israel share an abiding hatred of the Islamic jihadists now operating across the Arab world. The gulf monarchies, like the Israelis, are also concerned that U.S. power in the Middle East is waning, leaving them vulnerable amid the region’s turmoil.
The new reports concerning Israel come amid strenuous efforts by Netanyahu and his ministers to portray Rouhani’s reformist administration in Tehran as untrustworthy and to mobilize Israel’s powerful political lobby in Washington to undermine the push for reconciliation among U.S. lawmakers who depend on its support at election time. Jerusalem - Israel Holds Flight Exercise Ahead Of Iran Talks Jerusalem - In an apparent message to Iran, the Israeli military says it has carried a “special longrange flight exercise” and posted rare footage of the drill online. The military said Thursday that its squadrons practiced refueling planes in midair this week and tested the air force’s ability. Footage shows a tanker plane refueling a fighter jet midair.

Seattle, WA - Muslim Man Fired Over Religious Beard Wins Court Fight Seattle, WA - A Seattle-area Muslim man who said his former employer fired him because of the beard he wears for religious reason has been awarded more than $66,000, although most of that will
go to attorney fees. Abdulkadir Omar said he doesn’t care about the money. “It’s not even about the money,” he said. “It’s about standing up for something you believe in.” In 2011, Omar filed his federal lawsuit in Seattle against Sacramento, Calif.-based American Patriot Security, seeking back pay and unspecified damages for emotional pain and loss of enjoyment of life, among other reasons. According to the lawsuit, Omar was hired by a local manager of the security company in May 2009 and earned $9 an hour guarding a FedEx warehouse in Kent, Wash. He said he started the same day he was hired, and was not told about the cleanshaven policy. In November 2009, a supervisor from headquarters told him he had to

shave his beard because of the policy. Omar refused, saying his beard is part of his religious beliefs. He was suspended, and fired the following spring, the lawsuit said. An email inquiry to the security company on Wednesday was not immediately returned. “I truly hope that my case shows millions of American Muslims when they stand up whether it’s at work or school, that they will win,” Omar said. “I stood up and I won. I want my case to serve as an example.” Born in Yemen, Omar said he immigrated to the United States when he was 10. “I grew up in this country, I’ve been living here all of my life. Just like everybody else, I’m an American,” he said. The default judgment says that more than $50,000 of the $66,000 award is for attorney fees, while most of the rest goes to Omar, who

The JC.com reports that 27 year-old Claudia Gocman, a fashion executive and buyer for Ralph Lauren, requested all her uncut wedding footage for the purposes of self-editing from her contracted videographer, Anthony Aurelius, after an over-nine-months-long series of delays left her without a finished product, and that upon finally receiving the footage, found it laced with degrading comments about her, her wedding guests, and Jews in general. For instance, during the point in the wedding where her guests are dancing to Siman Tov UMazel Tov, Anthony Aurelius is heard saying, “Mental, Israeli dancing, isn’t it?
There’s a real feeling of like, they’re better than everybody else. Jewish.” His assistant, who happens to be Asian, replies, “That’s why Holocaust.” Aurelius answers, “I don’t think I blame Hitler,” while he films the bride dancing a few feet away. Also included in the footage is a segment accidentally filmed inside Aurelius’ car after the wedding, where he is heard telling his assistant, “Jewish women are beautiful, but cows.” Ms. Gocman said she and her husband considered legal action, but after learning that Aurelius’ has since gone out of business, it is no longer worth it and she is happy that no one else will have to go through what she did.

A Wine-Soaked Prayer
M
enachum Leider was only 9 years old, but he felt like a 90-year-old man. Menachum had an enlarged heart and his parents knew there wasn’t much they could do for him. There is no greater pain than seeing your child helpless. All the transplant agencies in Eretz Yisroel had Menachum on their lists but it was a waiting game that had a time limit. The only thing left was to daven to the King of all doctors. HE alone could change what seemed impossible, wholly probable. Menachum was in HIS hands – as we all are. Menachum’s father could stand it no more. His eyes were out of tears and he seemed ready to burst. “I’m going to the Kosel,” he informed his wife. He then went to the bus stop and took a seat. Mr. Leider took out his Gemara and went over the daf yomi. He was deeply engrossed when someone said, “Excuse me, Rabbi. I see you are praying. Can you pray for my granddaughter? She is very sick.” Mr. Leiber was staring into an elderly woman’s tear-filled eyes. “I am not a Rabbi, and I was not praying, but I will be praying for my son very soon and I will include your granddaughter in my prayers, with pleasure.”
Mr. Leiber soon found out that little Sarah Toker was 10 years old and in a coma due to a car accident. Her grandmother was flying back home after a lengthy stay at her bedside in Haddassa Hospital. Another tinok yisroel who needed help from above. Mr. Leider took the name and contact information of the young girl and put it in his pocket. The bus soon came and in a very short time, he was facing the Kosel. He had so much to ask. So much to say and cry for. He got to the large stones and immediately burst into uncontrollable crying. All of the pent up emotion seemed to rush through his body as he visualized his dear son in pain and at death’s door. After an hour of intense tefilos for his son and for poor Sarah Toker, he suddenly sceamed, “Tatte, let our children live!” oblivious to all those around him. Suddenly, he heard, “L’Chaim!” from many of those around him. He was standing in the middle of a Bar Mitzvah celebration, and the Bar Mitzva boy had just finished his aliya l’Torah. Someone ran to hug the father of the boy, when the cup of wine he had in his hand flew into the air and landed directly on Mr. Leider. His suit was soaked with wine, but his state of mind

was clean. He had heard the word “L’Chaim” and now he understood that Hashem had given him a sign that his son would indeed live. The father of the Bar Mitzvah boy came over and apologized profusely, offering to pay for the cleaning of the suit. He explained that he owned a cleaners in Yerushalayim, and told Mr. Leider to drop off the suit and it would be cleaned at no charge. He gave Mr. Leider the address when suddenly Mr. Leider gave the baal simcha a hug and wished him much nachas from his son. Mr. Leider was in high spirits. Something inside told him that all would be good. He felt that his tefilos were heard and answered, so the wet suit didn’t bother him at all. He went back home to tell his wife that all would be ok. He changed his clothes, and dropped off the suit at the address of the cleaners that was given to him by the Bar Mitzva boy’s father, which happened to be a few block away from his home. From there, he proceeded to the hospital. A few days went by and the good news came. A healthy heart was found for Menachum. After a lengthy operation, all went well and Menachum was on his way to a complete recovery. The Leiders had

aahh, Yom Tov. Those two little words have the power to send a seemingly sane, grown woman into full fledged panic mode. “Oh no! Yom Tov is two weeks away and I only have nine desserts!” Everyone has an opinion on how to get ready and there is no more heated debate on earth than the right way to make a roast. There are all sorts of ways to prepare for Yom Tov. There are the ultra-prepared who start cooking for Rosh Hashana the day after Pesach. Then there are the marathon preparers who do it all in one day, staying up until 4 a.m. to put the finishing touches on Tante Tzirel’s honey dipped, flakydough-wrapped apple turnovers with strawberry sauce and nut crunch topping. But through all the planning and preparing, the shopping and cooking, and of course the constant cleaning, there is family. On Yom Tov you get to spend a lot of quality time with your family.

especially on Yom Tov, as long as we remember the number one rule for staying sane: spend as little time as possible with your family. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family with all my heart. But by the time week two of Yom Tov togetherness rolls around, I’m sort of wishing I was on a deserted island. Somewhere peaceful and quiet. Somewhere I don’t have to yell, “Get off the banister! It’s not a ski slope!” every half hour. Nevertheless, I never cease to be amazed by kids. A three-year old can entertain himself for hours breathing on a window, then drawing pictures in the fog - but take him to shul to hear the shofar and he instantly turns into the king of kvetches. Little kids have an unbelievable sense of timing and we never fail to be caught off guard. Within five seconds of arriving, the child who smiled at me angelically and said, “Yes, I’m going to be very quiet in shul so that we can hear the shofar,” proceeded to complain very loudly that he was hungry.

“What? How can you be hungry? You just ate!” (Note the surprised shock, even though this happened last year, and the year before, and the year before that. We never learn.) “But I’m still hungry!” So, I fall back on a tried and true parenting strategy that I learned from my mother and she learned from her mother who learned from her mother: bribery. “Here, have a candy.” That only works until the brochos are being said. “Ma, I need to go to the bathroom.” All joking aside, I really enjoy Yom Tov. Especially Succos. That’s the time where you can hear other people’s kids acting up. The flip side of that is that they can hear you too. Even if you’re yelling in those

over-loud pseudo-whispers. “Put down the fork! Put it down! PUT. IT. DOWN. I don’t care if your sister is annoying you, you can’t stab her with a fork, now put it down!” The dangerous thing about Yom Tov is the schedule. You’re awake when you should be sleeping; you sleep when you should be awake. Your kids are ALWAYS awake. Because of this, you lose enough brain cells to have the functioning IQ of a bubble gum wrapper and you find yourself agreeing to even more zany schedule-disrupting schemes. “Sure, I’ll take my two-year old to shul on Simchas Torah, trying desperately to keep him from falling asleep in the stroller on the way, only to have him conk out a block from shul. Then I’ll wake him up
and send him in to dance with the Torah. Five minutes later he’ll be brought back out because he’s tired and cranky. I’ll strap him into his stroller and jiggle it maniacally hoping he’ll fall asleep again. But it will be useless because within those five minutes in shul he managed to accumulate enough candy to feed a starving city in Africa and now he’s on a gargantuan sugar high.” And then, before you’ve had a chance to clean the honey out of your kids’ hair, it’s over. And school starts. As I lovingly put away the succos decorations and wave goodbye to my little angels, one thought runs through my head: I survived! My neighbor is already preparing for Pesach.

Funky Chicken With Sesame Noodles This has to be one of the most amazing chicken dishes I have ever made or eaten. It’s really scary to watch people just attack this dish and practically inhale it in one breath. Brush up on your Heimlich Maneuver, people do get a little over-enthusiastic over this. Prep time includes marinating time.
Sesame Noodles 1 lb spaghettini (get the thinnest spaghetti you can find) 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup sesame oil (some reviewers have said that 1/2 cup of oil is too much and have halved the amount, so use your own) 1/3 cup sugar 3 scallions, thinly sliced 1/4 cup sesame seeds (or more)
Funky Chicken 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped (or 1/4 teaspoon dried) 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts sesame oil, for sauteing
First make the sesame noodles: Cook the spaghetti according to package directions. Drain (I also rinse). In a jar, add the soy sauce, sesame oil and the sugar. Shake until well blended and the sugar has dissolved. Pour this over the pasta. Toss with scallions and sprinkle with the sesame seeds. Set aside while you marinate and then cook the chicken. 8. Funkying the chicken: In a bowl mix the soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, garlic, brown sugar and the ginger. 9. Make sure the sugar has pretty much dissolved. 10. Add the chicken, making sure it’s all coated with the sauce. Cover and stick in the fridge for 2-3 hours. Remove the chicken from the marinade, and toss out the marinade left at the bottom of the bowl. Heat the sesame oil in a large non-stick pan. 14. Add the chicken in batches and saute for about 10 minutes, or until done, adding more sesame oil as needed. 15. Remove the chicken from the pan and let cool slightly. Slice the chicken diagonally into thin strips. 17. Serve the chicken over the sesame noodles. 18. Stand back and watch your guests/children/ loved ones inhale this dish.

Ingredients: 3 large onions 2 medium carrots 2 small sweet potatoes 4 stalks celery 2 butternut squash
chicken soup powder oregano thyme tarragon garlic powder 10 Tomatoes
Peel, chop and roast butternut squash. Chop onions, carrots, sweet potatoes and celery stalks. Saute in large pot. Add 3 tbsp chickensoup mix and other spices. Put tomatoes (and celery leaves) in food processor and blend. Add tomatoes to pot and fill with water. Boil and then simmer for an hour.

Raising Awareness & Funds on Behalf of At-Risk Youth in Our Communities
O
n Sunday, October, 27th, Our Place NY, New York’s premier organization offering at-risk Jewish youth a second chance, will host its Third Annual 5K Run / Walkathon to raise awareness and funds for atrisk youth in our communities, suffering from drug addiction, abuse, depression and other life debilitating circumstances. Whether you are a competitive runner, a casual jogger, or just want to walk with friends – a 5K Run / Walkathon is a great way to get out with friends and family on a Sunday morning, raise some money for a very special Tzedaka and get some much-needed Post-Yom Tov exercise. The 5K Run/Walkathon, which will take place at Floyd Bennett Field is a unique event, hosted exclusively by Our Place NY. A prerace reception begins at 10:30 AM, followed by a Men’s Race at 11:00 AM and a Women’s Race at 11:30 AM. A short children’s race will take place in between. Although the race will cover “only” five kilometers, the beautiful 3-mile course will
include perks normally only found in longer distance races, like Jaguar chip timing, professional race photography, awards for the top three finishers in each group, and finisher medals for everyone that completes the course. In addition, the first 250 registrants will receive a free event T-shirt. This year’s run features a number of teams representing various local organizations, schools, and companies, including teams from Rambam Mesivta, NY NCSY, HANC High School, as well as, a special team honoring the family of Rabbi Zvi Gluck, Director of Crisis Intervention at Our Place.
