Dirty&Shirt Life My

By Avi Sherman

H

ere I was, rushing to get dressed and start my new work on time. My first day as a cab driver would be exciting. I had rented time with the owner of 5 cabs and I knew that I would make a living and get to meet new and fascinating people each and every day. I loved to drive and I knew the streets of Chicago like the back of my hand. As I finished and grabbed my coat to leave, I passed the full length mirror and stopped. Uhggg. My hair was disheveled, my shirt was dirty, my coat was torn on the lapel seam. Is this how I wanted people to perceive me - a poor, un-kept slob? Then I walked out the door. People would see my great nature and see that perception was wrong. My first pick up was an older man on the way to midtown. “How are you?” I asked. “Eh, so-so, considering. Everything is hard. My car broke down, Can’t get a trustworthy mechanic to fix it and my wife had to take my son to school with the other car because he missed the bus. Life is hard.” I looked in the rearview mirror and saw that he meant every word. “I can’t believe you feel that way. I don’t own a car and you have two. I can’t find a wife and you have a wife and a son who goes to school. Life looks pretty good for you, the way I see it.” He was quiet but as he got out at his stop he said, “You know I’m right. You look like you never had a good day in your life.” He was wrong. Every day was good

to me, I said to myself as my next ride entered the cab. “How are you?” I asked. “Don’t ask. I’m late to a closing because my mom and dad decided to call and say hello for almost an hour.” “Really? I asked. My parents died when I was 12 and I never closed anything in my life, but I still love life.” My ride looked down and muttered, “What do you know…your shirt is dirty.” As he walked away, I counted the cash and the hefty tip he gave me. Was life so bad and I just couldn’t see it? Is it possible that people with dirty shirts can’t judge a good day from a bad one? Was my perception of life completely distorted? Or were theirs? I always believed that life was a standard, which means that it is what it is despite variables surrounding everyone involved. We all are born to partake in life, all with the same rules and abilities. Our most needed commodity – air - is free. Water is somewhat free, as is sight, smell and touch. Does a new car make life better? More enjoyable, maybe… but better? I turned the corner and picked up a well-dressed young woman. “How are you?” I asked. “Great, couldn’t be better. Just got a physical and I DO NOT HAVE CANCER! Life is good.” She almost screamed the words and smiled from ear to ear. I noticed the tear in her eye, but it came from relief and happiness. This woman perceived life as something worth sticking around for. She wanted to live every day as a gift. Health was her barometer of a good or bad day, a

20 www.NyBuzzMagazine.com I To advertise, call 718-513-9885

lousy or great life. She wished me a sweet and wonderful day as she left. She didn’t notice my dirty shirt because it meant little in the scope of things that mean a lot to her. I was about to pull out when the door opened. In slipped four children and a mom. The kids were poorly dressed but they were clean, and they looked like the happiest children I had ever seen. “Where to?” I asked. “Oh, just go through the park 4 times.” And that is just what I did. I drove through the park slowly, and I did it four times. Throughout the ride, this mom asked each child to tell her how things were at school, at home, and if there was anything bothering them. Each child spoke and shared stories, jokes and problems. I couldn’t believe the warmth among them. Each child felt as though he were the only child in the cab. They loved their mom and they loved each other. After driving through the park for the fourth time, I dropped them off at their home - a very shabby part of town. The house itself showed that this was a family without wealth, but I felt as though I had just driven a group of millionaires. As the children thanked me and left the cab, the mom put the fare in my hand. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have much of a tip for you,” she said, a little embarrassed. “Don’t worry about that” I answered, also a little embarrassed. “There is one thing you can do,” I said.

“Tell me why you took your children through the park four times.” “Oh, let me explain. My husband and I have eight children and life is exciting. We don’t have much money and the house is quite small. The eight children share two bedrooms and there is very little time or space for individuality. We try to give each child some personal attention, but the situation doesn’t allow for enough of that. So we take the kids out for a cab ride through the park once a month. My husband takes half the kids and I take the other half. During the ride we talk to the kids and bond. They also get to see the park and it ends up being a sort of “trip” for them - a trip that we can afford. The kids come back refreshed, full of excitement and ready to take on the world again. My husband and I get much more. We get to give them memories and the opportunity to show them that life is great.” With that, she started to get out of the cab. “One more question,” I asked. “IS life great?” “That depends on how you perceive it. For my family, it is better than great. We each have the opportunity to create happiness that lasts forever.” As I drove away I felt the lessons of this, my first, day come together. I suddenly realized that there were people who were fortunate to see life for what it was – a gift from G-d. A gift that keeps giving and growing with every breath. That gift is not confined to health or wealth. It is tied to happiness. There are those who have an unhealthy perception of life – one which relates directly to their immediate situation. Their vision is distorted. I was sure of that because when I looked in the mirror, my shirt looked just fine. Just fine

FROM THE DEPTHS

OF A

CHILD’S HEART Dear Mr. & Mrs. C., I’d like to start my letter by thanking you for inviting me and my little brother to stay at your home. You aren’t my Bubby and Zeidy, or my Uncle and Tante, but it will still be fun to come. My Mommy said it would be for a lot of weeks – she hopes not too many. I asked why: was she going to Eretz Yisrael on a big airplane? She said no. Then she looked very sad. Even though I’m only five, I know when my Mommy is upset or sad. She hugged me and whispered in my ear, “Sheindy, you’re going because Mommy is a little bit sick and doesn’t have so much koach.” So I told her, “Okay. If I go to a nice lady’s house with Shloime, then you’ll be able to rest and we won’t wake

you up in the morning, so you could sleep late.” I thought my Mommy would be so happy, but she didn’t even smile. “Do you have fever, Mommy?” I felt her head. It didn’t feel warm. “No, you don’t have fever.” I was excited to come to you because I love going to new places. So we packed together. I took my teddy bear and my pacifier. Yes, I still sleep with a pacifier. I hope you will let me, like my Mommy does. Will you call me a baby? Or will you say “Oh please, you’re a big girl already. Big girls don’t sleep with a pacifier.” I hope not. I will feel so sad. “Mommy,” I said suddenly, “Who will hold me before I go to sleep?” My Mommy started to cry. I got afraid. “What happened, Mommy?” “Oh,”

she said, “my stomach hurts. I’m sorry for crying, sheifeleh. You know what? Go ask Tatty for a box of tissues.” I ran to my Tatty. I love to do mitzvos. My Mommy’s always so proud when I do mitzvos. “Tatty,” I said, “Mommy’s crying. Can you please give me a box of tissues for her?” Tatty gave it to me and came back with me to Mommy. “Mommy, I have tissues for you. Does your stomach still hurt?” “No, Sheindy, I feel much better. Thank you.” She smiled her big yummy smile. I love that smile. Tatty asked me if I would like to go play outside in front of the house because the neighbors were outside now. “Yes!” I shouted. “And I’ll be careful not to go in the gutter.” Tatty was proud. He’s always proud of me.

Except when I don’t listen right away, or when I potch Shloime. But really I’m a very good girl. I went down the steps and I heard two Mommies talking. I heard them say in a whisper “Oy! Mrs. B. has yene Malkala.” Well, they were mixing everything up. So I said, “Nuh uh! Malkala is my cousin. My Mommy has yene Sheindele.” Leebie’s Mommy gave me a big hug. I don’t know why she did that. She never did it before. After she let go, I went outside to play. When Tatty called me in, I asked for two more minutes. I like to play outside! When I came in, Tatty tried to put me in pajamas. I was running around, trying to hide and making tumblesauces on the bed. I love to jump around and have fun. Usually Tatty counts to three. When he gets to three, I know I better listen or he will be very angry. Now he just said, “Come, let’s get in pajamas” a bunch of times. Will you count to three when I act silly? Will you still like me even if I

don’t listen right away? Will you punish me? What kind of “punishes” do you give in your house? Do they hurt? Will you tell me you are so lucky because I live in your house? My Tatty and Mommy always tell me that. Will you tell me that you love me? I hope you do. I love when my Tatty and Mommy tell me that, and I love them also. I’m going to love you also because Mommy said you are so nice. Please remember to hold me every night after I brush my teeth and say Shema. I wait the whole day for my Mommy’s goodnight hug, and I say “yay!” when I know it’s that special time. When my Mommy is holding me, I go very close to her and she kisses me a bunch of times. Then she tucks me in and I try to fall asleep. Sometimes I fall asleep right away, and sometimes I color or play with my dollies. My Mommy lets. She really does, as long as I stay in my bed. Will you let me? My Mommy even lets me help her give Shloime the medicine from a spoon when he has an ear infection. She says

I’m very big. I also know how to put my shoes on, and on the right feet. So I’m really big! Do you talk Hebrew? My Tatty and Mommy talk Hebrew when they don’t want me to understand what they are saying. That’s because I always listen to what they are saying. Then I ask questions if I want to know something. I ask a lot of questions. My Mommy always answers them, except if she is very busy. If she can’t, she says, “I’m busy now; I’ll bli neder answer you later.” Sometimes I forget to ask again. Do you like questions? I hope you do. I really think I will like your house, and I’m so happy that Shloime is coming. Can he sleep in my room? Will I be able to visit Mommy? Oh, I will miss her so much! Tatty said he will come to play with me, but he didn’t say Mommy will. When will I see her? I hope very soon. Tatty said I should ask Hashem to make her better. I will ask Him every day. Your little visitor, Sheindy

An open letter to the family of an upcoming simcha:

Most of your friends are missing important pictures! My name is David Friedman from )ULHGPDQ¶V 3hotography. I know that the fact above sounds shocking, but after speaking to thousands of people who have had pictures made at their simchas and seeing samples of thousands of simcha photos, I have seen that most simchas miss important pictures. We all know that missing pictures can wreak havoc in Shulem Bayis and ruin the relationship with family PHPEHUV RI ZKRP LPSRUWDQW SLFWXUHV ZHUHQ¶W WDNen and hope that it does not happen to us. After doing extensive research to find out why such important pictures were missing in such a large percentage of weddings I have found that the main reason was that: Nobody took the time to find out what pictures were important to you until after the simcha when it was already too late, and just like everything in life no picture can be taken for granted if it was not discussed. )ULHGPDQ¶V 3hotography, which is the studio I founded Bezras Hashem, has been around doing quality photography since 1988. We have the expertise and knowledge which has been built up by serving the community for close to 30 years, and with this background I personally guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at your simcha. We have used our experience to put together a formula to make sure that every person that hires us will receive 100% full coverage of all their dream pictures at any simcha and to offer our 100% Full coverage guarantee.

100% Full coverage guarantee We guarantee that any picture that you dream of will be taken at the simcha How does it work? After you book )ULHGPDQ¶V SKRWRJUDSK\ for your simcha you will QHHG WR VFKHGXOH RXU XQLTXH ³Discuss Your Dreams´ SUH simcha consultation. We recommend that anyone you want to satisfy with pictures of your simcha should be at the consultation including: Chosen, Kallah, both sets of parents, or bar mitzvah boy & any sibling, grandparent, aunt etc. that you would want to satisfy with the pictures. At the ³Discuss <RXU 'UHDPV´ consultation, you will meet with a photography expert- an expert in what is available in photography- where the photography expert will explain to you what is available based on the plan you chose and what is the most popular while listening to you with the goal of helping you to clarify your dreams, needs, and wants. The photography expert will help you clearly state what you want and that will save you a lot of headaches trying to figure it on your own. You will also be spared the aggravation of not getting the pictures that were important to you when the simcha is over.

At the simcha! All your dream photographs will be taken iy”h.

Call right away 718-43-PHOTO (718-437-4686) to book your simcha photography with full coverage. Thank You for your time,

SUDOKU

HOW TO PLAY

The objective of sudoku is to enter a digit from 1 through 9 in each cell, in such a way that: Each horizontal row contains each digit exactly once Each vertical column contains each digit exactly once Each subgrid or region contains each digit exactly once

The puzzler’s job is to fill the remainder of the grid with digits –respecting, of course, the three constraints mentioned earlier.

HARD

In each sudoku puzzle, several digits have already been entered (the “givens”); these may not be changed.

Vegetable Kebabs Kebabs are a very popular way of serving your favorite veggies. The beauty with kebabs is that your imagination is the limit most vegetables, and some fruits too, are delicious combined with ǡ ǡ Ƥ Ǥ Try cherry tomatoes, Portobello or smaller mushrooms, pearl onions, peppers, summer squash or eggplant (cut into ¼ inch cubes), pineapple chunks, apple slices... any other favorite is worth experimenting with! Simply insert your chosen combination onto skewers, brush with a little ǡ Ƥ marinade, and grill over the BBQ. The best part about grilling vegetables is that you don’t have to worry about overcooking them as you do with some types of meat. Vegetables seem to taste better grilled than they do cooked any other way. Marinating vegetables will help them caramelize better when they’re grilled, and caramelization brings out ƪ Ǥ vegetables in marinade for about an hour before putting them on the grill. If you don’t have that kind of prep time, just coat the vegetables ever so lightly with a little olive oil or canola oil and some soy or teriyaki sauce.

Steak — the all time favorite The best steaks are those that marinated for a few hours before hitting the grill. A good idea is to marinate your steaks in the morning and refrigerate. When you return from your outing, the steaks will be ready to go.

Best BBQ sauce Making your own BBQ sauce is quite simple and gives you an opportunity to choose your favorite ingredients. A perfect steak needs to be started way before the meat goes the grill. The sauce is the secret to a good steak.

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and pour over meat, chicken or vegetables in a plastic bag. Put your 4 steaks into the bag and make sure all meat is well coated. Refrigerate the meat in the marinade for at least 1 hour prior to broiling.

½ cup light soy sauce ½ cup honey 2 cloves garlic crushed Salt & pepper to taste

Make sure your grill is very hot and coals have a white color so that the meat does not burn. Slower cooking will render the meat healthier. Serve it medium rare rather than well done. Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes + marinating time

Some tips to help you attain a healthier BBQ:

1

HAVE LARGE RESEALABLE PLASTIC BAG

FOR MARINATING! One of the easiest ways to marinate and enhance the taste of anything you want on the grill including vegetables is to place them inside a large, resalable plastic bag. Set the bag in a medium sized bowl, and shake until all the food is coated. Seal the bag, eliminating any excess air. The marinade should surround the food. Keep marinated vegetables in the refrigerator until you’re ready to grill.

2

A LITTLE SWEETNESS IS GOOD, BUT MORE IS NEVER BETTER. Adding a small amount of a sweet ingredient (like fruit juice, brown sugar, honey or molasses) to the marinade or grilling sauce can be a good thing. It ƪ in the marinade or sauce. Too much sweetness ǡ Ƥ ǡ burn when they’re grilled over high heat.

Grilled Tri-Colored Pepper & Mushroom Salad 1 each: green, red and yellow bell pepper 4 Portobello mushroom caps (1/2 lb. /225 g) 1/2 cup Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing, divided Ǥ ơ Ǣ Ǥ Ǣ place in resealable plastic bag. 3

BE SENSIBLE ABOUT SERVINGS. Encourage eating smaller servings by grilling the meat in smaller portions. It can be quite tempting to eat a 16 oz steak or a ½ chicken. Cut your food into smaller pieces to avoid overdoing it.

4

JUST SAY NO TO PROCESSED MEAT. ơ

on our diet. They are known to be laden with salt and chemicals that do not enhance our well-being. Make healthier choices and skip the processed meats.

5

MINIMIZE CANCER RISKS WHEN BARBEQUING. Research shows that high temperature charcoal grilling of foods that contain fat and protein, including barbecue favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken, can lead to the production of cancer-causing chemicals.
