NUMBER 176520 The story of Paul Argiewicz, a teenage Holocaust survivor.

P

Forced to leave his home and his schooling – and ultimately his family – by the unfolding horrors of anti-Semitic violence, he eventually was arrested and transported to a concentration camp. $UJLHZLF] VSHQW QHDUO\ ¿YH \HDUV OLYLQJ by his wits in slave labor camps from Auschwitz to Buchenwald. Surviving WWII and the Holocaust against all odds, he lived to tell his story to the world. His account of perseverance and faith in the face of the relentless depravity of Hitler’s Third Reich and a society gone mad is an inspiring and cautionary tale that is both historic and timeless. Deanne L. Joseph’s moving new memoir, Number 176520 –The Story of Paul Argiewicz, a Teenage Holocaust Survivor, poignantly recounts one child’s journey through the terrors. With a preface and historical documentation provided by renowned Holocaust scholar, Professor Kenneth Waltzer (Director of Jewish Studies, Michigan State University), Number 176520 is quickly becoming an invaluable resource for students of the Holocaust. Following is an excerpt from the book:

They did not seem to mind that he was Jewish, and some of their parents even tried to help him in small ways. The father of one of his new friends owned a bakery. HOW TO PLAY

The objective of sudoku is to enter a digit from 1 through 9 in each cell, in such a way that: Each horizontal row contains each digit exactly once Each vertical column contains each digit exactly once Each subgrid or region contains each digit exactly once

The puzzler’s job is to fill the remainder of the grid with digits –respecting, of course, the three constraints mentioned earlier.

HARD

In each sudoku puzzle, several digits have already been entered (the “givens”); these may not be changed.

EMERGENCY CARE Emergencies do happen. It could be a fall from a bike, a sudden high fever, seizure, a pot knocked from the stove, or a child choking during dinner or stung by a bee and suddenly unable to breathe. Would you know what to do?

T

he American Academy of Pediatrics notes that an emergency exists if you think your child’s life is in danger or could suffer permanent harm unless care is received immediately. Most parents feel they are prepared for emergencies because they know when and how to dial 9-1-1. But often, that isn’t enough. Your child may need care before emergency medical service personnel arrive. Therefore, being prepared can assure that your child isn’t further harmed by doing the wrong thing. The Emergency Medical Services for Children, a program of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, has ten tips to help you be better prepared because no matter how hard you try to protect your children, emergencies do happen.

Check if 9-1-1 is the right number to call. Some areas of the country do not have 9-1-1. Others have E-9-1-1 where your address is automatically stored in a database. Braiding challos into a round shape can be an art. Inasmuch as there are many ways to achieve the round look, the following pictorial instructions can help simplify the task. After experimenting with many methods, these were found to show the best results.

Round Sweet Challah for Rosh Hashanah Basic recipe

5 cups water ͙ ƪ ƪ 2 oz. yeast or 3 ½ tbsp dry yeast. 3 tbsp honey 2 eggs (optional) 1 cup oil 4 tbsp Kosher salt ½ cup raisins (optional) 1 egg for glazing Sesame seeds or poppy seeds for the topping (optional) Put all ingredients slowly into the mixer in the order given. Allow to mix for at least 12 minutes, until you get elastic and perfect dough. Should the dough be too dry, add some water. Should it be too wet, add ƪ Ǥ Ǥ ƪ not stick to the bowl. Cover with a plastic bag (for faster rising) and then a dishtowel. Allow dough to rise for 1 hour. Then punch it down, allow to rise another hour, and punch it down again. Cut the dough into desired amount of challos you want to obtain. This is the simplest way of achieving a crown looking challah. Cut your dough into the preferred size and twirl it around into this shape, tucking in the end under the challah.

For a fancier and braided look cut each piece of dough into six pieces and roll them out into six strands. .Shape the strands into tic tack toe shape then you will have 3 strand on each side. Braid each side and then tuck them under the challah. Allow to rise another 20 minutes. For a beautifully glaze use only the egg yolk to “paint” your challah. Sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds, or leave as is.

͗ Ǧ ƪ ½ cup unsweetened cocoa ½ tsp salt 2 ½ tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp ground allspice 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup honey (preferably clover honey) 1 ½ cups granulated sugar Φ ȋƤ Ȍ 3 large eggs 1 cup seltzer or cola beverage (such as Coke or Pepsi) 1 ½ tsp vanilla sugar ½ cup chocolate chips (optional) 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (optional) Topping: (optional) Fresh Strawberries Homemade chocolate sauce or store-bought readymade chocolate syrup confectioners sugar Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Grease well a 10-inch tube, angel food, or bundt pan. Set aside. I ǡ ƪ ǡ ǡ baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ground cloves, and allspice. Set aside. In bowl of electric stand mixer (or a hand mixer may be used with a large mixing bowl), combine honey, oil, and both sugars. Beat mixture on low to medium-low speed for 1 minute. Add in the eggs, seltzer (or cola, if using) and vanilla and beat for 2-3 minutes on low speed. ƪ Ǧ for another 2 minutes until batter is smooth and well combined, scraping down sides and bottom of bowl as needed (you want to make sure all of the honey and other ingredients are well combined, not sticking to the bottom of mixing bowl). With a wooden spoon, fold in chocolate chips and grated coconut (if using), then pour batter into prepared tube or bundt pan and bake in preheated 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) oven for 50-65 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center of cake comes out clean (without any moist crumbs). Remove from oven and let cake cool in pan for 15 minutes, then invert onto wire rack and let cake cool completely. When cake has cooled, transfer to a serving plate or platter. If desired, place several strawberries over top of cake, drizzle with chocolate sauce or store-bought chocolate syrup and dust cake with confectioners sugar just before serving. Preparation time: 20 minutes Serves: 12-14
