erlin was quite a different city back at the beginning of the 80s, back in the days when the protagonist from Sven Regener’s Der Kleine Bruder (The Little Brother) set off from the West German province to explore that exciting, bold city called „West Berlin“. Milan Peschel has staged a humorous retrospection of this mad time at the Maxim Gorki Theater. The theatre director tells us what induced him to do this (starting from page 14). We know little about what motivated and inspired furniture designers such as Mart Stam or Marcel Breuer to create „Stühle ohne Beine“. However, at the sight of the 25 different cantilever chairs, which can still be seen in the Bauhaus Archive Museum of Design Berlin until 10th June 2012, we can get an impression of what moved them to convey the idea of lightness and transparency from architecture into furniture design and construction (page 37). Lightness and transparency could also be the motto for the Carnival of Cultures, which has been celebrated every year at the Whitsun weekend in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin – from as far back as 1996. We’ll clue you in on where the best parties are taking place and the route this great parade is taking, with its participants from over 70 nations celebrating alongside all the revellers – you are also invited to come along (page 42).

What are the must see sites? There are just so many of them. However, you absolutely have to see the magnificent museums: Museum Island, Kulturforum, Jewish Museum, Hamburger Bahnhof etc, etc, etc... What site do most of your guests aim for first? Definitely the Brandenburg Gate or the Reichstag.

Schrippe This special “Berlinese ” term for an oval-shaped bread rol l with a slit in the middle has its origins in the German words “aufgerissene Rin de” (ripped open crust). On the oth er hand, native Berliners occasionally use the phrase “olle Schrippe” (which approximates to “old woman”) to descri be women who no longer look as fresh – or good enough to eat – as the popular breakfast bread rolls. The term “Schripp e” has been a favourite word in the Berlin dialect since the late 18th cen tury.

What has been the most difficult task that a guest has presented you with so far? That was Michael Jackson and the most difficult task was protecting him from so many fast approaching fans. Which restaurants do you recommend to your guests? The choice here in Berlin is just incredible. We have four top restaurants in the Hotel Adlon alone. Outside the hotel you can also never go wrong with the Grill Royal.

Sven Regener’s novel “The younger brother” is set in the early eighties. Photographer Michael Hughes documented the atmosphere in Kreuzberg in those years with his camera, for instance here in the Oranienstrasse on 1st May 1984.

THE ILLUSIONS OF EXISTENCE Michael Hughes

In his novel Little Brother, Sven Regener depicted the people of 1980s Kreuzberg as unsuccessful artists everywhere. Now Milan Peschel brings to the stage a humorous look back at this time, as one of never-ending discussions forever choking off any potential for true action, for acting on anything.

erlin-Kreuzberg, end of 1980s. Everywhere there are artists spinning in circles: squatters, punks, pub owners and their patrons. On a night just like any other, Frank Lehmann travels from Bremen to Berlin in search of his big brother Manni. He can’t go home, doesn’t want to either. At least Manni is a successful artist… or so Frank thinks. But Manni is nowhere to be seen. Instead, Frank learns things about his brother, things he’d rather wished he hadn’t. And still, no one can give him the answer to his real question, the location of his brother. In his novel Little Brother, Sven Regener describes the first 48 hours after Frank’s arrival in Berlin. It’s the second part of a trilogy about comic heroes, published in 2008. Milan Peschel’s production of the story can now be seen at the Maxim Gorki Theater. We spoke to the director. Herr Peschel, why did you want to bring Little Brother to the stage? Milan Peschel: When I read Sven Regener’s book for the first time I thought, this has to be produced on stage. The dialogue is brilliant, really sharp. Obviously you have to be careful that you don’t just put slapstick on the stage. I was interested in the idea of what happens to these artists when they get older, when the time for playing it loose and improvising through life has passed. Because you have to embrace a proper profession, or start a family. There’s a real sense of hopelessness in these stories. You have to layer a lot of sadness and melancholy into them – but still keep the comedy. That’s why the actors are all older than the characters in the book. Around 40. There’s also a bit of a crime story involved in the search for the missing brother, by using the general outline of the story as a guide.

Are you bringing Kreuzberg nostalgia to the stage? Milan Peschel: It was important to me that it wasn’t just a novel about Kreuzberg. The experiences and the atmosphere that reign in these artistic circles can be found in other cities or in your own youth. I grew up in the 1980s in East Berlin. It felt very similar to how it is described by Sven Regener. The only difference is that events didn’t play out in pubs and galleries but rather in homes. When did you go to West Berlin for the first time? Milan Peschel: A few days after the wall came down.

In Kreuzberg? Milan Peschel: No, the first time I went to “bloody Ku’damm” as Sven Regener calls it, at the Beate Uhse store with my girlfriend. You have to first do the clichés – go to Beate Uhse and then eat pizza. I don’t know when I went to Kreuzberg for the first time. Did your years working as an actor in the Volksbühne ("People's Theatre") under Frank Castorf help to prepare you for directing? Milan Peschel: Of course, I went through his school. I do things in a similar way as him. I make a note of what interests me and try it out on the stage to find the right place for it. I take on what works, and if it doesn’t, I leave it. I wouldn’t presume to try and do this with a Dostoevsky novel, but it works with Little Brother. Thomas Aurin

The search ends with disillusionment. The missing brother is a guinea pig in a medical study. Milan Peschel: It’s sad, yes. The novel shows the sadness of the artistic existence. You make art and dream of a career in New York City – and what’s left at the end is a hotel on Ku’damm (a main boulevard in Berlin) in which you’re taking medication as a guinea pig. Those who manage to make money from art are only the tip of the iceberg.

Castorf has been director of the Volksbühne for 20 years and has just extended his contract again. Milan Peschel: Yes, it’s crazy, isn’t it? Good though. Frank Castorf has been going longer than Helmut Kohl. The Helmut Kohl of German theatre. But don’t write that. Although, maybe he’d like it.

David Marton’s reputation as a director on the borders of music and theatre, combines in his production at the Schaubuehne, Bach’s crystal clear music with the darkly whispered novel of Lazlo Krasnahorkai; Melancholy of Resistance. Characters from the book who have made it onto the stage, among others, are Gyorgy Eszter (Ernst Stoetzner), who plays a one-time piano teacher at the conservatory, now a whimsical music - guru who has been hopelessly caught up in the unplumbed depths of harmonic theory. The stage: with Biedermeier furniture, carpets and two grand pianos, is a hellish clutter of junk, half bourgeois interior, half dungeon of madness. The

occupants cultivate their neuroses. A corpulent Dame (Bettina Stucky) enthusiastically foretells the end of the world. The wife (Jule Boewe) of the mad piano teacher dreams of cleanliness and order in the home and has established an ominous committee to that end which has resulted in her relationship to the medal-festooned Police President (Nils Borman). Since 1892 this building has played host to the most controversial directors. From Erwin Piscator in the 1920s to Castorf and Schlingensief in the 1990s. The technology and sometimes shocking scenarios particularly appeal to a young audience. It was also the stage for the 1989 political revolution.

In 1928, in this contemporary theatre’s striking rotunda – constructed by Erich Mendelsohn –, Berlin’s largest cinema, the Universum, started up. Since 1962 it has housed the Berlin theatre on Lehniner Platz, which has made its name through new interpretations of well-known pieces by the likes of Shakespeare and Ibsen.

way – in a little medieval community centre. Up to 50 guests sing, dance and act for all they’re worth in a small group in the basement of the Memorial Library. Afterwards, it’s well worth taking a stroll through the Nikolaiviertel area.

In around 1900 the stage, rich in tradition, was the city’s first variety act location. Singers, artists, strongmen and erotic dancers appeared here. It was destroyed in a bombing in 1944. In 1992 a new variety theatre was reopened, in a different location but under the same name.

His salon located on Markgrafenstraße in the Gendarmenmarkt is indeed quite bombastic with over a floor space of 800 m². The Rahimkhan couple have a café, a store selling upmarket household accessories like vases, dishes, lamps and small pieces of furniture, as well as their exquisite styling salon, where you can have your hair cut, tinted and coifed. This clearly was not too much for Mr. and Mrs. Rahimkhan, as they also created the “True Volume” hair care series on the side. As Claudia Rahimkhan

explains: “A lot of people have very fine hair. Modern Furniture Design Chairs without legs When Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe transferred the idea of lightness and transparency from architecture to furniture design in the form of cantilever chairs in the 1920s, it revolutionised the traditional design methods that had held sway up to then and heralded the era of modern furniture design. Berliners were quick to refer to the area’s name “Oberschöneweide” as “Oberschweineöde” (the word’s meaning shifts from “beautiful meadow” to “pig wasteland”). New life is returning to the area with the reopening of the salon on 27th April. Exhibitions, talks and events keep history alive. Personally I’m looking forward to the curiosities in the former television technology factory. It’s also the whole atmosphere around the salon, as well as the special type of original Berliners that fascinate me. Another tip: it’s well worth visiting the unique Kranhaus café. hen Chancellor Angela Merkel declared, “multiculturalism has failed”, the organisers of the Carnival of Cultures could only balk for they’ve seen their city in action. This year they will again present a colourful and lively 70 nation community, who together organise both the street parade and street festival. With a staggering 96 groups, 4758 participants and 67 floats, everyone will be outfitted in either their country’s traditional dress or imaginative costumes and move through the streets of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, presenting their vision of the dynamic and multicultural melting pot that is Berlin. The Werkstatt der Kulturen (Workshop of Cultures) organisation started the carnival

With the collapse of the wall, the organisers wanted to send a clear signal and show that this newly reunited Berlin, both old and new, could be a model of true integration with its stronger than 872,000 people with an immigrant background. “The Carnival of Cultures developed against the backdrop of Berlin’s growing internationality and the resulting influx of immigrants from all areas of the world,” says Nadja Mau, one of the carnival organisers. She is convinced of its effect, “The carnival encourages and stimulates popular art and culture at the highest possible level”. Similar to the Notting Hill Carnival in London and the Rotterdam Zomer Car-

nival, this event has a spirit of integration with which people of any age and background can identify. In previous years, however, the event organisers were worried about whether it would happen at all; many of the groups who completely self-financed their participation as well as the floats, ran out of money and subsidies were often cut. This Whitsun, however, when the beautifully decorated floats glide past filled with people drumming and dancing madly, you won’t sense any worry. It’s a day of celebration. Time and again the participants demonstrate their spectacular creativity, most likely wanting to be the ones to grab the coveted prize for the best float.

hat began as an idea between three friends grew to become one of the most successful shows in the world. Ever. Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink, the founders of the “Blue Man Group”, started their first stage show in the Astor Place Theatre in New York in the 1990s and received multiple awards immediately after its first runs. Distinctions received by the group include the Obie Award and the Lucille Lortel Award. Since then, the men in blue have conquered theatres all over the world – including in Boston, Chicago, Tokyo, Las Vegas and Berlin. In Berlin, they have been wowing an audience of millions since 2004 in the IMAX Theatre, which was modified specially for their show. They have been a fixed feature of the city’s entertainment scene for some time now and have even risen to become the

most successful ensuite show in the capital. But this success story has not been without its victims: in the first five years alone, 10,000 drumsticks have been maimed or killed in the energy-charged show. In addition, 13,000 litres of jelly has been spilled, 27,000 drumheads ripped open (requiring replacement), 31,000 marshmallows caught in the mouths of the “Blue Men” and 32,000 litres of paint pummelled. There are a thousand reasons why you should check out the three bald-headed Blue Men. Let yourself be taken away on a unique journey, one that is bright, loud, funny and absolutely visually spellbinding. Colours spurt rhythmically into the air and music resounds from PVC pipes, while a live band ensures an exciting atmosphere and a melodious dynamism. Incidentally, all the musical instruments used were developed specially by the Blue

Man Group. The blue show in the Bluemax Theatre is a comedy event, play and concert all in one, where even those who don’t speak German can still have a good time – speech isn’t a big part of the show. This revue theatre, which has existed since 1924 has a colourful history and is even famous outside of Germany, and boasts the longest showgirl lines and stage in the world. Awoke to new life during the Cold War when it became the risque showcase of the East German regime. Till the 21st July 2012 you can be enchanted by the show “Yma – Too Good to be True”.

oud, temperamental and sometimes frantic – these are the attributes Gayle Tufts, the “Miss America” of the German comedy scene, is known and loved for. When she walks on stage, her aspiration is nothing less than to radiate positive vital energy. And this she does: for over 20 years, this American-born performer has been pleasing her German audiences with her trademark feature – her charming “Denglish” (a mish-mash of Deutsch and English). In her new routine “Some like it Heiß!” the actress and theatre scholar addresses topics like growing old, being an adult and staying young in her usual vivid style, as well as telling stories of women who

o less than 50 stars in 70 minutes? Such a feat could only be accomplished by Ennio Marchetto. Monroe, Lindenberg, Springsteen, Popeye and Maya the Bee are all included in the show – as paper figures. His ensemble has already grown to 250 characters. Marchetto has the facial expressions and gestures of the stars down to a tee, satirising, singing and transforming himself at rapid speed into the next celebrity.

Platz When Udo Lindenberg fell in love with a girl from Pankow in the early 1970s and released a song about the romance in 1973, a piece of German music history was born. The musical “Hinterm Horizont” (Beyond the Horizon) tells the story of the Panik rocker and includes 20 of his biggest hits. Lindenberg himself played a part in selecting the actors.

It wasn’t like Marco Müller needed a blessing from above. The Michelin-starred chef had already proven time and time again his ability to turn mostly local ingredients like pointed cabbage and horseradish, red mullet and wild pheasant into fantastic meals. So, when he was notified that he would be preparing lunch for Pope Benedict XVI last summer (2011), he was not excessively awestruck by the occasion. Instead, he simply set about creating a splendid dining experience for the Holy Father. The Pope was pleased with his meal, honouring the chef with the highest of compliments. No question that today all guests can enjoy the same papal treatment at the Rutz with such delectables as Duck Etouffee à la Rutz or Confit wild salmon with sweet dark cherries and Taggiasca olives (photo).

A French-born chef of Portuguese descent serves up Russian dishes with an international flavour on Berlin’s most famous boulevard

new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation. But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children. And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern flair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.

The restaurant has the work of stucco artist, Biener, whose listed pieces are lovely to sit and marvel at.

Sounds a bit rude and inappropriate, that, but just means once again Le Cochon Bourgeois has come to stay in one of the most exciting districts in Berlin. The building in which Kater Holzig has settled was for a long time a run-down industrial ruin. ortunately in Berlin there are still restauraters who are not fighting over the choicest spots in the trendiest areas, rather appreciating the tranquillity of some sweet location right on the outskirts. Sonja and Peter Frühsammer are two such gastronomes. Their restaurant is nestled in the charming district of Berlin called Schmargendorf, which sounds further out than it really is, just a mere 15 to 20 minutes by train or car (from the city centre) or, in Berlin terms, no distance at all. Frühsammers restaurant is located in a beautifully restored country villa. On cooler days you can sit in the elegant dining room, look out of the large casement windows at the tennis enthusiasts in the neighbouring club and watch them launch their serves, volleys and smashes. In the warmth of summer, sit in the expansive garden and enjoy a chilled glass of one of the white wines selected carefully for his guests by Peter Frühsammer. His love of Spanish and German wines (over 800 bottles in the cellar) has been recently expanded to include fine Austrian and French varieties.
