erlin kicks off the New Year in glamorous yet simultaneously down-to-earth style. From the 15th to around the 20th of January, the fashion world pitches its tents in Berlin. The occasion? Fashion Week, which twice a year brings together designers, buyers and celebrities in the capital: famous labels such as Kaviar Gauche, Lala Berlin and Filippa K showcase what designers have in mind for the coming autumn/winter. We present individual fairs and locations in more detail, and tell you where the best parties are taking place (page 38). Another January highlight is International Green Week, which is not only popular with visitors to the city, but also with Berliners. With an eventful history spanning more than 80 years, this is one of Berlin’s oldest fairs. It’s steeped in tradition, and is one of the most famous events nationwide. Every city has its own little rules and peculiarities. Berlin, too.

There are a couple of things that are typical of the German capital – and we’ve compiled a list of them just for you: Scheese When a Berliner uses the word “Scheese” (meaning “banger”) as a term of endearment for his car, this is a reference to the French word “la chaise” (chair), with a movable chair being meant in the figurative sense. The real “Scheesen” are the old Trabis, the legendary East German car model, in which tourists can now take a fantastic tour of the city.

When you think of Kurt Weill, the first thing that comes to mind is the Threepenny Opera and Bertolt Brecht: the “soundtrack” of the Weimar Republic. However the German-Jewish-American composer´s musical range is far wider. His oeuvre ranges from opera to musicals, from symphonies to requiems. His work contains influences from the world of jazz, as well as chanson, folk singing and biting social criticism. The Berlin Comic Opera now presents us with a whole week brimming with works from Weill’s pen. First up is the rarely performed operetta “The Cow”, inspired by the spirit of Offenbach. Also in the programme are the well-known opera “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” and the collection of songs “Seven Deadly Sins” that he wrote in the early '30s on his way to exile in America. For the “Berlin to Broadway” show, musical singer Ute Lemper returns to Berlin all the way from her adopted home of New York to interpret Weill classics, tango, chansons and Jewish songs.

n reality, Roman Polanski's 1967 Hollywood film “The Fearless Vampire Killers or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck” was a parody of the vampire films so popular at that time. Nevertheless, both the public and film critics were intrigued. Nowadays “The Fearless Vampire Killers” is a cult phenomenon. As is the musical production, which Polanski himself staged in Vienna in 1997. Fifteen years on, this vampire story is the most successful German-language musical of all time, with 6.5 million people having seen it. This is due not least to Thomas Borchert, who has already enjoyed much success for the musicals “Cats”, “Les Misérables” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Borchert has grown up but still retains his mild, low-key manner,

his bright eyes, curly hair and soft features.

Yet when he emerges from the cloakroom and strides across the stage with that stern look in his eyes and wearing that billowing overcoat, his booming voice does away with any doubts as to who is calling the shots in this show. Borchert is Count von Krolock, the Grand Vampire. The musical gets under way at a leisurely pace and follows Polanksi's film pretty closely. We hear the story of the vampire researcher Professor Abronsius (Veit Schäfermeister) who, together with his naive assistant Alfred (Michael Heller) makes his way to Transylvania to boldly hunt vampires. They take up residence in a Transylvanian mountain village where Sarah (Amelie Dobler) catches Alfred’s eye.

But vampire Count von Krolock also takes

a shine to the young innkeeper's daughter and invites her to visit him in his nearby castle. Abronsius and Alfred follow her, their aim being to finally prove that vampires do exist. But there's one thing they don't see coming: Sarah, Alfred and Abronsius are on the menu for the vampires who are holding their annual ball. Anyone intending to see this theatrical highlight should hurry: “Tanz der Vampire” (the musicals German name) is only running until January 2013 at Theater des Westens. After that, the vampires are leaving Germany.

Panorama

This exhibition celebrates its premiere this season. Divided into three halls over 20,000 metres at the new ExpoCenter Airport, the Panorama organisers show off a modern mix of internationally relevant collections.

With its brand portfolio, Panorama fills the gap between young avantgarde and premium collections on the one hand, and street - and sportswear brands on the other hand. It will present its first show in January 2013 with around 350 carefully selected collections.

This amusingly-named show has been in existence for more than ten years, and since 2011 the BBB has become one of the biggest fashion shows in the world. Around 600 exhibitors present their collections in 70,000 square metres of the former Tempelhof Airport’s great halls. The focus here is on denim, sportswear, street fashion, functional wear and dressed up casual wear.

When it began in 1988, Transmediale was established under the name “VideoFilmFest” as a side event of the Berlinale “International Forum for New Cinema”. Today, it is the best known media arts festival in Germany, a flagship project for contemporary culture. Every year it presents projects which link art, culture and technology. This time the theme is “BWPWAP”, an online acronym for “Back when Pluto was a planet”. The term refers to the removal of Pluto’s planetary status in 2006, and is cited whenever someone wants to point out that a statement is based on long outdated facts. Here they wish to show that new technologies can take seemingly stable networks such as the solar system and pull them out of their old context. To this end, participating artists actively sought to create installations, video screenings, workshops and performances which demonstrate ambiguous and problematic relationships with technology. Live audiovisual events are at the heart of the performance programme.

This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre-high specimen of Chinese bog wood.

››401contemporary Fine Art Gallery Ralf Haensel’s 401 Contemporary Gallery aspires to create a dialogue between younger and older artists.

The intention is to introduce new means of interpretation. Mainly urban, contemporary art is exhibited.

by 113 post-war artists from 28 countries. The exhibition is divided neither chronologically nor geographically, which at first feels a little unusual. Instead, it is an artistic discussion of the concept of freedom, of politics and state, enlightened reason and human rights. With her installation "Flowers" (above), Aurora Reinhard, born in 1975 in Finland, rejects the image of woman as seductress and domestic help. We see Fernand Leger next to the image of an unknown Polish artist. Works by the british artist Damien Hirst and the german Gerhard Richter are to be found, as well as works by little-known artists from all over Europe.

ccentrics always see the world a little differently: they are nonconformist, wilful, curious and creative. If this leads them to pick up a brush, a stylus or a crayon, not only do they create something new, but they are likely to become both famous and infamous.

The kookier and more caustic they are, the better. The exhibition at the Scharf-Gerstenberg Museum is dedicated to three of these very special artists. Francisco de Goya, Honoré Daumier and Henri de ToulouseLautrec share not only their interest in the more pleasant aspects of society and its representation, but also their fascination with its dark underbelly.

In 1993, a gallery owned by Ben and Hannes Kuckei was founded in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with the name “vierte Etage” (“fourth floor”). In 1998 it moved to Mitte and was renamed “Kuckei + Kuckei”. The Linienstraße gallery is still there, and has been promoting new photographic talent for years. The exhibitions are across two floors.

hat does the artist sees when he opens his eyes? He sees life. What does the art historian see when he opens his eyes? He sees art." This is what Grützke said in his 2000 work, “Seven Pamphlets to Abolish the Concept of Art". The Stadtmuseum Ephraim-Palais is now showing a retrospective of six decades of work by this prominent figure painter.

His ironic, furious and parodic art resists the style of abstract art that was everywhere in the West Berlin of the 70s.

Grützke was one of the most interesting observers of social conditions, not only in the former West Berlin, but also in the reunified Germany.

Obsessions The Jewish Museum Berlin is showing the first extensive exhibition of the complete works of the painter R. B. Kitaj since his death in 2007. It is the first retrospective exhibition of hin work for 14 years. This is a large collection of paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries entitled “surreal worlds”. Some of the works are very well known, others less so.

The collection can be found in the eastern Stüler building and in the Marstall opposite Schloss Charlottenburg. With over 250 works, it depicts the history of fantastic art, with surrealism at the very heart of the collection.

Krokodil & Polke, The Olbricht Collection The first chambers of wonder were set up during the Renaissance: collection rooms in which valuable works of art, rare natural curiosities, scientific instruments, objects from other worlds and unexplainable things went on display. Berlin also had an art chamber. Founded

by Elector Joachim II, the few objects it contained have now been distributed to various museums.

The chamber of wonders in the Olbricht Foundation’s ‘Me ollectors Room’ amazes visitors and gives them an insight into the past, just like it did 200 years ago.

Neue Nationalgalerie: Der geteilte Himmel

N

he first part of a trilogy of exhibitions on 20th Century art, “Modern Times", is now followed by “Divided Heaven”. This exhibition draws on art from the collection of the Neue Nationalgalerie, comprised of works from East and West between the years 1945 and 1968. The title is inspired by Christa Wolf's 1963 novel, in which she tells the story of a couple from East and West who cannot agree on whether they want to live in the East or the West in the future.

An air of melancholy hovers over the exhibition, because this division also holds true for the art world – although the new generation of curators now deal with this legacy quite fearlessly. Thus we find on the wall Willi Sitte’s huge, five-metre wide canvas “Leuna”, on which he captures the 1965-66 workers’ uprising in true historical blockbuster style. In 1994 it was

Constructed in 1914, Stadtbad Neukölln was modelled on an ancient spa and ranks amongst the most beautiful public bathhouses in Europe. Even after this listed building was converted in 1984, its appearance has been preserved. Travertine pillars, corridors and mosaics form an image based on a classical model and are consistent with floor plans from Greek temples and basilicas.

Touching is expressly encouraged at the Green Week Farm Experience. Over a total of 6,000 square metres, farmers talk about production chains, quality control, animal husbandry for different species and more. In the Floral Hall, 30,000 spring flowering bulbs are on show in all their glory.

Green Week is much more than a mere showcase or place to exchange goods, however. It sees itself primarily as a comprehensive forum for rural areas and has more than 80 years of tradition behind it:

Green Week takes its name from the traditional green loden wool clothing worn by many forestry and agricultural workers who visited the fair in its early days. There is a wide range of events on offer: information sessions on the food and fisheries industry, special "Dream Village" exhibitions, organic markets, dog shows and consumer information on flowers, seeds and gardening.

More than 300 symposia, seminars and conferences make up the Green Week programme, providing information on issues

such as renewable resources, bioenergy and horticulture. But above all, no culinary desire goes unfulfilled. Where else can you go from the Alps to the North Sea in just one hour? A gourmet tour of Germany offers regional specialties from all 14 federal states: fine wines from Rheinland-Pfalz, juice and sweets from the Sanddorn (a fruit called the Lemon of the North in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern because of its high vitamin C content). From further afield, Swedish elk schnapps and Australian alligator burgers from Australia also amaze the palate of receptive guests.

A carnivore’s delight The best steak houses in Berlin Does the name Eva Longoria mean anything to you? She plays Gabrielle in Desperate Housewives. n Berlin-Neukölln, in the Körnerkiez between Hermannstraße and Leinestraße, tucked in amongst betting shops and pubs, you just do not expect a café like this one. The Ungeheuer restaurant is tastefully fitted out with furnishings lovingly selected from the flea market and above them, the creature that gave the cafe its name, a grisly-looking flying insect, sways gently. The menu is not expansive, but the breakfast (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can be assembled for each customer according to his or her individual wishes. Terrific homemade curd cheese and fruity jam is served both with the classic and vegetarian breakfast. Some of the bread is even baked on the premises and tastes wonderful. The Mediterranean scrambled eggs with dried tomatoes and ham are to be recommended. Portions are lavish and on Sundays a Prosecco is served with the Graved-Lunch-Breakfast – everything at reasonable Neukölln prices.

Restaurant im Straßenbahndepot It's an age-old truth that finding the really good things in life nearly always involves going a long way. Nowhere is this adage more apt than at the Restaurant im Straßenbahndepot (literally “the restaurant in the tram depot”) in the Berlin neighbourhood of AltHeiligensee. Beautifully situated between Nieder-Neuendorfer and

Heiligensee lakes, the restaurant is not only great for a Sunday excursion; in culinary terms there’s a lot to discover here too.

Like the “Poularde in Halbtrauer” (literally meaning “poularde in half-mourning ”), a French speciality where the chicken breast is roasted over black truffles and served with a creamy, spicy potato gratin. Or the venison testicles, cooked only briefly, pink on the inside, currently served with chanterelles and always arranged with dauphinoise potatoes and cranberries. Perfect. And not forgetting the restaurant's chips, bound to please adults and children alike. These too are prepared to the chef's high standards, always with the aim of pleasing the restaurant’s guests.

Visitors to the “Spielzeugmuseum” (Toy Museum) in the Havelland region will learn how important play is for human beings' intellectual and social development. The museum is devoted to an entirely different world of play from the electronic one of today, focusing instead on the play of old that appealed to the senses and to feelings. Pieces on display include examples of German toy manufacturing from the past two centuries. There was a time when the town of Brandenburg an der Havel was known as “Toy Town”, a place from which toys were distributed to nurseries all over the world.

The Youth Theatre in Brandenburg that’s been operating for the last 30 years is now beginning to command attention beyond German borders. To a large extent, this success is due to actress Christiane Ziehl, who since 2001 has dedicated herself to promoting the theatre’s young amateur actors. The result is lively theatre art that thrives on the freshness, fun, passion and curiosity of its young performers.

Since 1990, the “Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde” (Fans of Berlin Railway) club has been running museum trips on the southern section of the “Heidekrautbahn” (Heather Railway) that’s not used by passenger trains. Passengers travel by steam trains, railcars and other vehicles of yesteryear. The trips set off from the provisional stop of “Märkisches Viertel” on Wilhelmsruher Damm, not far from Berlin-Rosenthal train station. Getting on board one of the 1920s carriages gives a sense of what travelling by train was like in the past as you sit back on the comfortable wooden benches or padded seats.

The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem.

A new tree has been planted to commemorate what is probably the most famous pear tree in literary history.

During the GDR era, there was a “forbidden city” located in the town of Wünsdorf which was reserved for the military. After reunification, the site fell into disrepair – until the book lovers moved in, that is. Today, thousands of valuable books from the past and present tempt visitors to the forest town to browse and buy. A veritable “booktown” has been created here, based on the example of the British town of Hay-on-Wye located on the WelshEnglish border. Visitors who want to learn more about the Wuensdorf area's 100 years of military history will also find something to interest them. The town has a museum on the subject, with guided tours of the huge bunker systems. Events are held on a regular basis.

Live like the Slavs In present-day Lower Lusatia at the western and southern edges of the Spreewald forest, 50 ringwalled castle complexes were built during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. The builders were members of the Slavic Lusizi tribe, who had lived there since the 8th century. A model reconstruction of these complexes can be visited at Raddusch. The diameter of an original Slavic castle measured 38 metres inside and 58 metres outside, with the castle surrounded by a 5.5-metre wide u-shaped ditch. Access inside the 7-metre high walls was via two tunnel gates. Enjoy an excursion into the distant past.

People have very different memories of their childhoods, which are also dependent on when those childhoods took place. The social, political and cultural environment has a strong influence on development in the first years of life. That's the point being made this year by Kulturland Brandenburg under their 2013 theme “Serious play, playful seriousness”. It highlights the great tension in changing views of childhood: from childhood as a time of obedience with a caring but disciplinary education in premodern times, through to the child as the centre of pedagogy during the Enlightenment. It also portrays the concepts of childhood in progressive education, and the current practice of understanding children as socially competent entities. Kulturland Brandenburg´s projects for 2013 deal with ideas and images of childhood, showing children’s everyday lives and habits, as well as documenting social and historical change within educational institutions. Amongst other things, children’s rights will be touched upon, photographs from more than 100 years of childhood in Brandenburg will be shown, and personal documents and items will be on display. And of course there will be many projects that today's children will be able to create for themselves.
