ntil recently, the Germans were able to enjoy the title of world travel champions. No nation was on the road as happily, as often and as long as the Germans. Although the Chinese recently overtook us in the itchy feet stakes, the forecasts for 2013 look to put the Germans back on top. An ideal opportunity to learn about the world through popular destinations is the International Tourism Trade Show (ITB), which takes place every year in early March in the halls under the Funkturm. We tell you exactly where to find different destinations, which exhibitors are offering interesting deals, and why the ITB is generally one of the city’s most popular fairs (page 18). Equally popular in Berlin is the Long Night of Museums. On 16th March nearly 100 museums, collections, archives, monuments and galleries open their doors until well after midnight (page 16). Berlin is Dog City Berlin is second only to Manhattan in terms of its number of dogs. What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far? Each task can be difficult - the most emotional, however, was finding the birth certificate of a South American guest’s mother. She was born in the 1920s in Berlin and emigrated to Mexico. The family had tried for years without success to get hold of the birth certificate. But we managed in just four weeks - by chance it was then delivered to her in Mexico exactly on her birthday. Finally, a tip ... he Love Parade of the most beautiful works of art – otherwise known as the “Long Night of the Museums”. More than 150,000 visitors attend the event, using the shuttle buses provided to complete a tour of over 60 Berlin museums and institutions. The venues involved always come up with something special for the occasion. This year the theme is “Diversity

“I was born as the second son of the second marriage on the second Thursday in the second month of the second decade in the second half of the last century of the second millennium” - thus wrote George Widener on a self-portrait. From childhood

the 51-year-old was fascinated by numbers and data; it was accomplishing everyday tasks that he found problematic. As part of the “Secret Universe” series, the number junkie's first solo European show is on now at the Hamburger Bahnhof. Widener's work shows maps and sketches on scraps of paper, executed with a meticulous hand. Fortunately for him, the artist from Kentucky has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. It means he no longer has to live alone with savant syndrome, or to be seen by others as crazy. Anyway, weren't most of the major artists kind of crazy?

ou know the ITB is on in Berlin when Ireland is receiving visitors in a pub, Canada has built a log cabin in Hall 2.1, a group of Maoris in traditional dress is gathered around the New Zealand stand and almost all the hotel rooms in the city are booked out. This year more than 10,000 exhibitors and companies from 180 countries will be taking part in the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest travel fair. From 6th March, the ITB is open to trade visitors before opening its doors to individual visitors on 10th and 11th March. Each year, an average of more than

170,000 keen travellers drop into the ITB to get ideas for their next trip. Their search for inspiration is helped by the most spectacularly designed stands: the interior of a rustic mountain lodge is rebuilt, a gleaming white-sand simulation of a Caribbean beach is set up, and a genuine Mongolian yurt is erected. This year the official partner country is Indonesia. During the fair, this island nation will give visitors an insight into its diverse culture. There are more than 700 different cultures and languages in Indonesia, and Indonesian folk groups will

Bags made from truck tarpaulins? Is that particular trend not a little outdated by now? True, these practical shoulder bags became useful accessories for big city dwellers on the move a few years back. In order to strike out against a potential buyer humdrum, the makers of the “Tausche” (which translates as “swap” or “recondition”) developed an innovative and extraordinarily successful idea: the so-called “Tausche-Tasche” (reconditioned bag). When the customer buys a bag body in any of the four different sizes available, they also get two different covers, which can then be attached to the bag body with one quick zip. Three friendswornpunched 233 glasses frames out of it, put lenses in them and linked everything with a spring hinge connection system. That was in 1996 and the birth of ic! berlin, whose screw-less stainless steel design would start a real trend. “Our glasses are luxury products which are manufactured by hand in Berlin,” explains Ralph Anderl, one of the company’s founders. Now ic! berlin sells more than 200,000 pairs of glasses every year worldwide.

››Prime Time Theatre A soap opera brought to the stage has been wittily placing the neighbourhood of Wedding in the centre of attention since 2002. In “Gutes Wedding, schlechtes Wedding”, scores are settled in mercilessly funny fashion with the neighbouring trendy district of Prenzlauer Berg, with the Turkish community in the kebab shop poked fun at too.

In around 1900 the stage, rich in tradition, was the city’s first variety act location. Singers, artists, strongmen and erotic dancers appeared here. It was destroyed in a bombing in 1944. In 1992 a new variety theatre was reopened, in a different location but under the same name.

The point is always to have a wonderful evening together. One possibility might be to hear Patrik Baboumian (small photo), the strongest man alive, explain in the vegan restaurant Kopps, that not only meat is good for the muscles but also vegetables.

Ten years ago no one could have imagined that Berlin would one day have more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city in Germany. Today guests come from all over the world to not only indulge in the highest culinary standards, but also to learn about the great diversity of Berlin’s restaurant kitchens. Hundreds of chefs dedicate themselves daily to their guests’ well-being. Fifteen of them will allow visitors to look directly into their pots and pans during the ‚eat! berlin’ festival. And they’ve even invited their friends and colleagues to lend a hand. For example, the head sommelier of the Bernhard Moser Wine School is a guest of Stefan Hartmann; the chief editor and the publisher of Gault Millau are expected at the Tim Raue restaurant; and chef Florian Glauert’s diners will be joined by Michelin star chefs Thomas Kammeier (Hugos) and Matthias Diether (First Floor) at the Duke restaurant.
