What has to be seen in Berlin? Radialsystem V is a great place. It’s where old meets new. In Berlin’s former water pumping station, classical music enters into dialogue with contemporary music. It has clear-cut architecture and a fantastic location on the River Spree. You should definitely make time for it when you’re in Berlin. The Berliner Dom is a wonderfully tranquil place in the midst of the turbulent capital. Berlin has the largest Turkish population outside Turkey. The Turkish weekly market is definitely worth a visit, with its fresh produce and very friendly, vocal traders. Strolling along Maibachufer lets you experience a taste of the Mediterranean in the north of Germany. Where do your guests usually go first? Our Brasserie Desbrosses for breakfast. The original interior is from the south of France and dates from 1875, but the restaurant is cons-

tantly reinventing itself and has a real creative flair. The chef takes care of guests personally at a large wooden table; in the boulangerie everything is baked fresh daily in front of the guests. There is also a great selection of oils, jellies and sweet treats sourced from France. Pocket-friendly prices, a lively ambience, special events and exciting offers for every day of the week: a typical brasserie, and right on Potsdamer Platz in the centre of the city. Chef Martin Lisson and his team are the personal hosts for any visitors who find themselves here, be they Berliners or tourists. What question are you asked most often? What do the crossed golden keys on your lapel stand for? And what do you reply? The golden keys represent our promise to our guests to consistently create personal moments, to create and care for a network of friends worldwide, to care for our guests professionally and with discretion, to show passion for our profession, and to be proud to be able to work as service professionals. Is there anything that annoys you about Berlin? A lack of the self-assurance that, for example, Parisians and New Yorkers have. Berlin doesn’t yet recognise itself as a truly global city, and therefore sometimes gets in its own way. What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far? Do you remember the Icelandic volcanic eruption in 2010? So many flights were cancelled. Fulfilling the basic desires of our guests, namely the desire to get home, became a real challenge. I remember taxi journeys to Oslo and Paris, group bus trips, and flights via

Novosibirsk to get to London. A real state of emergency, very difficult to resolve, but together we were able to help and get our guests back home. What restaurants do you recommend to your guests? We are very happy to recommend neighbourhood restaurants, for example, Taverna Ousies. By far the best and most authentic Greek restaurant in town! It has the charm and flair of a Mediterranean port, right in the middle of Schöneberg. Restaurant Frau Mittenmang on Prenzlauer Berg adapts itself to your mood and gives you a real feeling of being at home. What would you recommend to visitors coming to Berlin in March? From 21st - 24th March the new Red Bull Flying Illusion show is on at the Tempodrom. Presented as the eternal battle between good and evil, the world’s best dancers fight against the laws of gravity and the powers of imagination. Breathtaking breakdance meets awe-inspiring illusions - seemingly impossible moves on amazing sets.

ntil recently, the Germans were able to enjoy the title of world travel champions. No nation was on the road as happily, as often and as long as the Germans. Although the Chinese recently overtook us in the itchy feet stakes, the forecasts for 2013 look to put the Germans back on top. Love Aids Riot Sex 2 Robert Indiana’s 1966 sculpture “Love” became a stone-carved symbol for the free love movement. 20 years later it was all over. At the end of the 80s the General Idea collective created the AIDS wallpaper, replacing Indiana’s “love” with “AIDS” -

AIDS as the consequence of love. Another 20 years later, Susi Pop came up with a remake of the remake, setting the lettering against a monochrome pink background. Love Aids Riot Sex II is the sequel to an exhibition on the topic of AIDS. The artistic view of AIDS has changed since the first effective drugs came onto the market. AIDS still cannot be cured, but its onset can be delayed for decades. People with AIDS are no longer doomed. Instead they demand respect, like the drug-addicted woman Ono Ludwig photographed for his triptych “We Can Be Heroes Just For One Day”.

The Pergamonmuseum is Berlin’s most visited museum. It houses an antiques collection, the Middle Eastern museum and the Museum for Islamic Art. The main attraction, however, is the Pergamon Altar. Its frieze is considered to be one of the masterpieces in Hellenistic Art. To avoid long waits, get there early.

Ralf Haensel’s 401 Contemporary Gallery aspires to create a dialogue between younger and older artists. The intention is to introduce new means of interpretation. Mainly urban, contemporary art is exhibited.

Art in the bunker: The Boros Collection This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre-high specimen of Chinese bog wood. painting Chinese scholars, painters and calligraphers have been giving people their essays, poems, calligraphy and paintings as presents and as expressions of friendship for years. They bestowed these gifts on colleagues, family members, students, teachers or those close to them. This exhibition highlights this particular way of looking at paintings and calligraphy using selected masterpieces by Chinese painters and calligraphers from the collection held by the Museum of Asian Art.

In 1993, a gallery owned by Ben and Hannes Kuckei was founded in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with the name “vierte Etage”. In 1998 it moved to Mitte and was renamed “Kuckei + Kuckei”. The Linienstraße gallery is still there, and has been promoting new photographic talent for years. The exhibitions are across two floors.

Some 10 000 exhibitors will once again be taking part in the ITB (International Tourism Trade Show). This year for the first time, individual visitors will be able to book their next holiday there.

ou know the ITB is on in Berlin when Ireland is receiving visitors in a pub, Canada has built a log cabin in Hall 2.1, a group of Maoris in traditional dress is gathered around the New Zealand stand and almost all the hotel rooms in the city are booked out. This year more than 10,000 exhibitors and companies from 180 countries will be taking part in the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest travel fair. From 6th March, the ITB is open to trade visitors before opening its doors to individual visitors on 10th and 11th March.

Each year, an average of more than 170,000 keen travellers drop into the ITB to get ideas for their next trip. Their search for inspiration is helped by the most spectacularly designed stands: the interior of a rustic mountain lodge is rebuilt, a gleaming white-sand simulation of a Caribbean beach is set up, and a genuine Mongolian yurt is erected. Once again the ITB has chosen its central themes: the Indian director responsible for the casting of the film Slumdog Millionaire, Loveleen Tandan, will give a talk about trav-

Alexis Agné has a penchant for sweet curiosities. He scours the globe for gooey and gummy treasures and the more unusual they are, the better. Agné asks friends, who he affectionately nicknames Sugarnauts, to bring him back jelly or sugar oddities. And he’s delighted when said oddities break the limits of human endurance, as is the case with the American “Toxic Waste” which is so acidic it hurts. The box bears the word “hazardous”. The other sweet treats in his shop are less extreme without being boring. There’s Hubba Bubba Groovy Grape bubble gum from the USA and Pufuleti from Romania, a bag containing popcorn bars and bearing the well-intentioned advice, “Hraneste-ti optimismul, pufuleti” - “Nourish your body, Pufuleti”.

Safety on the ice When it’s really cold, the lakes freeze. Skating in the open air is, of course, very attractive. But caution is necessary here. When is the ice safe to skate on? Going onto the ice is always at your own risk! The strength of the ice on different stretches of water can be very different. Water current conditions, lake in- or outlets, sunlight, texture and density of the ice all play their own special roles.

For ice skating in the open air, go to the ice rink in Berlin’s Neukölln district. Opening times are weather-dependent since it’s not possible to put a roof over the ice. The arena offers two areas: one for professional skaters, the so-called „battlefield“, and one that is reserved for amateur skaters.

What should you consider when going onto the ice? Never walk alone on the ice! If it´s dark or there is poor visibility, this is even more important. Bodies of water with a strong current such as the Spree, the Havel, Great Wannsee, Müggelsee and Tegelsee should be avoided. Also stay away from ice under bridges and shipping channels. How can you help if someone has fallen through the ice? Alert the police (110) and the fire department (112) immediately! If possible, try to rescue the person from the shore with a pole, a rope or flotation device. If you‘re approaching the hole in the ice, lie down and crawl forwards. That way you distribute your weight over a larger area.

Improvisational theatre is a theatrical sport. There are no rehearsals, only spontaneity and imagination will save you here. The audience throws a word towards the stage and the performers create an entire scene around it. Berlin theatre group “Die Gorillas” are pioneers of this art form who have turned the international Festival for Improvisational Theatre into a permanent fixture in Berlin’s theatrical calendar. Since 2001, ensembles and individual artists meet annually in the second half of March to celebrate a festival of improvisational theatre on stages throughout Berlin. The festival opens at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm. This year, artists are devoting themselves to representing different styles of film. Alongside romantic comedies and fantasies, the actors are concentrating on the works of Quentin Tarantino and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

The Big Ones ››Deutsches Theater Founded in 1883 as the capital’s main theatre, today it is still the stage where the country’s best actors perform. In 1961 the modern building was erected on Bismarckstraße on the site of the 1912 opera house, which had been destroyed in the Second World War. For a long time it was the largest new theatre to be built in Germany. Schiller Theatre The large national opera house on “Unter den Linden” is the oldest stage in the whole of Berlin. In 1961 it was rebuilt using the original plans from 1742. In 1928, in this contemporary theatre’s striking rotunda – constructed by Erich Mendelsohn –, Berlin’s largest cinema, the Universum, started up. Since 1962 it has housed the Berlin theatre on Lehniner Platz, which has made its name through new interpretations of well-known pieces by the likes of Shakespeare and Ibsen.

The second world war destroeyed the building almost completely, the hall, were the audience sit has been preserved. In the 1960s opera was performed for the first time in German in this Classical building. Walter Felsenstein produced it. The current director, the Australian Barry Kosky, gives the opera a new image with humor and passion – as you can see at the current performance of the “Zauberflöte”.

In “Haus der Sinne” (literally meaning “house of senses” in English), the gangsters buy beers for each other at the Crooks’ Ball, whereas red wine is the preferred beverage on the tango evenings. International theatre ensembles perform here regularly. In addition to dance evenings, concerts are held here from time to time as well.

A soap opera brought to the stage has been wittily placing the neighbourhood of Wedding in the centre of attention since 2002. In “Gutes Wedding, schlechtes Wedding”, scores are settled in mercilessly funny fashion with the neighbouring trendy district of Prenzlauer Berg, with the Turkish community in the kebab shop poked fun at too.

A French-born chef of Portuguese descent serves up Russian dishes with an international flavour on Berlin’s most famous boulevard

new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation. But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children. And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern flair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.

Customers can enjoy refined German and Austrian cuisine on the edge of the Gendarmenmarkt. How about tatar from young bull filet with sourdough bread as a starter? This wine comes from their own vineyard in the Palatinate, as does the red wine, which you might like served with braised ox cheeks with chanterelles in chive sauce.

The restaurant has a wonderful location on the edge of the Landwehr Canal. In winter the customers are warmed by a tiled stove, while they feast on the celebrated duck, the quality of which is seldom found elsewhere in Berlin. There are also light dishes, such as cucumber spaghettini with warm smoked eel and pike caviar on the menu. In summer you can sit under trees in the square and enjoy the full-flavoured Horcher wines form Herbert Beltle – heaven on earth.

reuzberg has always been one of Berlin’s most cosmopolitan districts and here in the area between Lausitzerplatz and Mariannenplatz visitors are greeted on all sides by exotic sounds and smells. Now a stylish Caribbeanstyle restaurant has taken up residence in an attractive ivy-covered house in the area. Against the soft hum of world music, guests can relax and eat either at one of the pavement tables or in the colourfully-painted interior. A pear tree with a history The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. On 1st May, the German ProAm Tournament Series kicks off in the A-ROSA Scharmützelsee Sporting Club Berlin. With a prize pool of 80,000 euros, it is the most lucrative ProAm tournament in Germany. The BB-Masters is the tournament where professionals and amateurs compete together. Acting as the tournament’s host, well-known golf professional and nine-time German champion Frank Adamowicz is up for grabs as a potential partner. The BB-Masters is held in alternate years at four different golf courses in BerlinBrandenburg. All 2013 club champions and PGA Germany golf professionals have been invited. Also in attendance will be the German Golf Association team and other golf amateurs and lovers of the sport.
