Schrippe This special “Berlinese ” term for an oval-shap ed bread roll with a slit in the midd le has its origins in the German words “aufgerissene Rinde” (ripped open crust). My Berlin Tips What has to be seen in Berlin? Museum Island, with its unparalleled museums. Especially the Neue Museum and its unique architecture.

Every genuine resident of Berlin will have ask ed themselves at some point why the rou nd pastries with the ma rmalade filling are only called “Berliners” outside of the German capital city. Berlin is Dog City Berlin is second only to Manhattan in terms of its number of dogs. Canines are allowed on the German capital’s public transport and the city has no rules about keeping them on a leash. Berlin even has dedicated dog parks. Where do most of your guests go first? The KaDeWe department store and Kurfürstendamm are pretty high on the list.

What disturbs you in Berlin? The permanent construction sites round the city, and the constant back-and-forth with the BER airport. Finally a tip... It’s a little out of the centre but it’s worth the trip: “Maria und Josef”, a great beer garden in Berlin-Lichterfelde. Fantastic Bavarian cuisine and a lovely garden. Martin-Gropius-Bau Ai Weiwei: Evidence

Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei has had a tough time back home. In 2011 the artist was imprisoned for 81 days, allegedly for tax evasion. The real reason was more likely his criticism of the Communist regime. Because of this, he could not exhibit in any Chinese museums so he made the Internet his permanent exhibition space. Now, the artist has decided to hold his biggest worldwide exhibition to date in Berlin. The 56-year-old is displaying installations, photos and video works over 3,000 square metres. Most of the pieces were completed especially for this exhibition. Ai Weiwei has installed 6,000 wooden chairs in the spacious atrium, just like the ones used in his home country since the time of the Ming dynasty. The stools form an impressive and pixel-like work, and represent the centuries-old aesthetic of rural China. Because of the strong references to China, his work can initially prove elusive to Europeans. However, a detailed illustrated catalogue and signs provide information and help to order the pieces.

Serious Games There are two Watsons. One is the real soldier, working on combat training on a computer in a Washington classroom. The other is Watson the avatar in this computer game, lying dead in the dust of an Afghan mountain landscape. The real

Watson has to accept that the game is over. Conceptual artist Harun Farocki, born in 1944 in the then German-occupied Czechoslovakia, uses “Serious Games” to examine the use of computer game technology in the training of American soldiers. “Watson is down” is one of four installations. The barrage of photos, videos and images with which we are bombarded every day does not seem to heighten our awareness of their power to manipulate. With his films and videos, Farocki wants to make us aware of new perspectives, and of images themselves.

The Pergamonmuseum is Berlin’s most visited museum. It houses an antiques collection, the Middle Eastern museum and the Museum for Islamic Art. The main attraction, however, is the Pergamon Altar. Its frieze is considered to be one of the masterpieces in Hellenistic Art. To avoid long waits, get there early.

Ralf Haensel’s 401 Contemporary Gallery aspires to create a dialogue between younger and older artists. The intention is to introduce new means of interpretation. Mainly urban, contemporary art is exhibited.

ince the 60s, American artist Dorothy Iannone has been considered a pioneer for free love and female sexuality. Her big issue is ecstatic love. She takes inspiration from her own life for artistic works in the form of paintings, books, articles and illustrated stories. Her art has often been censored for having pornographic content. On show is a comprehensive exhibition of her work from 1959 - 2014, which was previously collected for a gallery in Los Angeles where she held her first solo exhibition in 2010, The

xamples of wall paintings using late-modern stylistic devices are provided by 34 famous artists from around the world, from Bruce Nauman and Rosemarie Trockel to Sol LeWitt. Their designs have been implemented in five of the Hamburger Bahnhof’s halls. You can see geometric shapes in black and blue, graffiti, drawings and illuminated lettering on the ceiling.

MODERN LIVING In 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided to include six housing estates from the Berlin Modernism movement in the World Heritage List. The settlements were built between 1913 and 1934, and reveal how the architects of the time used design to make living more bearable.

t was a great day for urban Berlin. On 7th July 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Quebec decided to include six housing estates from the Berlin Modernism movement in the World Heritage list of German architecture, thereby bestowing them with a great honour. The reason for the decision was that the listed estates not only represented a new type of social housing from the period of classical modernity, but also exercised considerable influence on the development of architecture and urban planning in the following years.

Architects such as Walter Gropius, Bruno Taut and Hans Scharoun, whose names are closely associated with urban development in Berlin, forged a connection between high art and constructional pragmatism with their designs. Their answer to the housing shortage after World War I marked a structural change in housing: no longer should people spend their lives in dark tenements with inner courtyards surrounded with side and back wings . The new flats were bright and sunny, affordable for the less well-off and equipped with kitchens, bathrooms and balconies.

At the end of January 2006, the then Berlin Senator for Urban Development, Ingeborg Junge-Reyer, submitted a request to UNESCO that the settlements be included in the World Heritage List. The decision was supported by the fact that the estates are very well preserved to this day. Gartenstadt Falkenberg, Wohnstadt Carl Legien estate, Großsiedlung in Siemensstadt, Großsiedlung Britz, Schillerpark-Siedlung in Wedding and Weiße Stadt in Reinickendorf were all included. They were built in the years 1913 to 1934, between World War I and the rise of the Nazis.

The Carl Legien estate, named after the first chairman of the Allgemeine Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbund (General German Trade Union Federation), founded in 1919, is the closest to the city centre. Because of the high price of land near Prenzlauer Allee, architect Bruno Taut focused on multistorey buildings with four to five floors. Taut used terraces, block perimeters and garden spaces to create semi-public space. All the apartments face away from the street.

“Get out into the greenery” on Pfaueninsel

Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island in English) on Wannsee is one of the most popular day-trip destinations for Berliners and Potsdamers. The 1.5 km long and 0.5 km wide island is a nature reserve and World Heritage Site. The park, which has managed to keep its fairytale character up to this day, was designed from 1821 to 1834 by Peter Joseph Lenné in the English style. High above a revitalised stretch of central West Berlin is one of the city’s most impressive terraces – and delicious food. This is Neni Berlin where chef Haya Molcho, an Austrian with Israeli roots, demonstrates her considerable culinary abilities. Appropriately for a hotel restaurant, her Berlin kitchen plays with the concept of hospitality. Neni doesn’t offer conventional fine dining. Instead, everything arrives at the table at once. There’s wonderfully aromatic yet mellow Eifel lamb, or the flavoursome and satisfying corn-fed chicken served with caramelised aubergines and Tel Aviv sabich, a vegetable dish held together with poached eggs. Everything is laid out on flat wooden boards, and everyone tries everything. It’s an interesting and essentially entertaining concept that’s held together with culinary expertise and served up with views of the Memorial Church and the zoo which glimmer in the dark.

Restaurant Am Steinplatz Breathing new life into old buildings seems to be in fashion. It’s definitely the case at the Hotel am Steinplatz. Its luxurious interior has the aura of a grand hotel from the 1920s. Grey, black and brown predominate, with a little added bling. You feel like you’re in good

hands. This is especially true in the restaurant. There’s an on-going performance at the end of this long room, just like at the cinema. The tables are arranged so guests can see chef Markus Zimmer’s team at work in the open kitchen. The culinary concept was dreamt up by Michelin-starred chef Stefan Hartman. The focus is on classic German cuisine with local ingredients. The grilled saddle of veal was tender and pink in the middle, and arrived at the table with black salsify and brioche dumplings. The Baltic cod was also surprising, served here with a red wine sauce. Parsnips, raisins and hazelnuts gave the dish an unusual note, and were an indication that this restaurant doesn’t just satisfy its guests with conventional dishes. Customers can enjoy refined German and Austrian cuisine on the edge of the Gendarmenmarkt. How about tatar from young bull filet with sourdough bread as a starter? This wine comes from their own vineyard in the Palatinate, as does the red wine, which you might like served with braised ox cheeks with chanterelles in chive sauce.

The restaurant has a wonderful location on the edge of the Landwehr Canal. In winter the customers are warmed by a tiled stove, while they feast on the celebrated duck, the quality of which is seldom found elsewhere in Berlin. There are also light dishes, such as cucumber spaghettini with warm smoked eel and pike caviar on the menu. In summer you can sit under trees in the square and enjoy the full-flavoured Horcher wines form Herbert Beltle – heaven on earth.

Since 1990, the “Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde” (Fans of Berlin Railway) club has been running museum trips on the southern section of the “Heidekrautbahn” (Heather Railway) that’s not used by passenger trains. Passengers travel by steam trains, railcars and other vehicles of yesteryear. The trips set off from the provisional stop of “Märkisches Viertel” on Wilhelmsruher Damm, not far from BerlinRosenthal train station. Getting on board one of the 1920s carriages gives a sense of what travelling by train was like in the past as you sit back on the comfortable wooden benches or padded seats. Live like the Slavs In present-day Lower Lusatia at the western and southern edges of the Spreewald forest, 50 ring-walled castle complexes were built during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. The builders were members of the Slavic Lusizi tribe, who had lived there since the 8th century. A model reconstruction of these complexes can be visited at Raddusch. The diameter of an original Slavic castle measured 38 metres inside and 58 metres outside, with the castle surrounded by a 5.5-metre wide u-shaped ditch. Access inside the 7-metre high walls was via two tunnel gates. Enjoy an excursion into the distant past.
