What has to be seen in Berlin? Kurfürstendamm with the KaDeWe department store and huge range of small cafes, restaurants, theatres and musical stages.

Broiler was the name often given to roast or fried chicken sold in road-side snackbars, particularly in the GDR. If a whole portion of Broiler will be too much then ordering half of one is an option.

What is the question that you are asked most often? Where was the Wall and where is the best place to find out about its history?

What has been your most difficult task for a guest so far? I had to organize 30 kg of dry ice within 24 hours for a music video. The problem: the dry ice had to be brought on a yacht and the yacht was in the Croatian port of Split. A good one hundred phone calls later and with a little luck, the dry ice was brought by the yacht and provided for the music video.

Canines are allowed on the German capita l’s public transport and the city has no rules about keeping them on a lea sh. Berlin even has dedica ted dog parks. And finally an insider tip... The Butcher’s Bar in Torstraße! It‘s disguised as a currywurst and kebab shop - you have to go into the toilet and look for the entrance through an old, red British telephone box to get into the bar. On 26th June it will be 50 years since John F. Kennedy gave his famous „Ich bin ein Berliner“ speech in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall. At that time in the summer of 1963 the transatlantic relationship was fairly strained. Only two years earlier, the East German head of state Walter Ulbricht had ordered the building of the wall across Berlin. From the perspective of the West Berlin and Bonn politicians, the Americans did not do enough to impede the division of the city. Yet enthusiastic citizens cheered Kennedy’s speech about freedom. On this historic anniversary, various institutions are organising a programme that will once more recall the importance of the President‘s visit. The diverse programme ranges from moderated bus tours, exhibitions, readings, lectures, film screenings, to interviews with people who were present and panel discussions. 50 Jahre john F. My Favourite Exhibition Kirsten Niemann studied history of art and gets excited about good exhibitions.

ost people thought he was a clown. He saw himself as a braggart, a spendthrift, an instigator. The painter, photographer and installation and performance artist was also a drinker, dancer, musician and writer. He did everything to excess, which in 1997 at just 43 years of age cost him his life. On 25th February Martin Kippenberger would have been 60 years old.

“I was born as the second son of the second marriage on the second Thursday in the second month of the second decade in the second half of the last century of the second millennium” - thus wrote George Widener on a self-portrait. From childhood

the 51-year-old was fascinated by numbers and data; it was accomplishing everyday tasks that he found problematic. As part of the “Secret Universe” series, the number junkie’s first solo European show is on now at the Hamburger Bahnhof. Widener’s work shows maps and sketches on scraps of paper, executed with a meticulous hand. Fortunately for him, the artist from Kentucky has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. It means he no longer has to live alone with savant syndrome, or to be seen by others as crazy. Anyway, weren’t most of the major artists kind of crazy?

To mark this occasion, the Hamburger Bahnhof has dedicated a major exhibition to “Kippi” that, as well as showing his works which oscillate between subversion and irony, also gives you the chance to view the artist as a human being.

Krokodil & Polke, The Olbricht Collection The first chambers of wonder were set up during the Renaissance: collection rooms in which valuable works of art, rare natural curiosities, scientific instruments, objects from other worlds and unexplainable things went on display. Berlin also had an art chamber. Founded by Elector Joachim II, the few objects it contained have now been distributed to various museums. The chamber of wonders in the Olbricht Foundation’s ‘Me Collectors Room’ amazes visitors and gives them an insight into the past, just like it did 200 years ago.

oth Johannes Itten and Paul Klee were struck by the idea that the colours in a self-contained universe are in a structured order. Both artists drew from the intellectual history of shared and sometimes esoteric sources, and at the same time encouraged each other. In chronological order and in five major stages, the exhibition shows key works by Klee and Itten. The focus is on their artistic approaches to colour: colour and esotericism, colour aura, colour harmony, colour and abstraction, colour and nature, and division of colour. hen Chancellor Angela Merkel declared, “multiculturalism has failed”, the organisers of the Carnival of Cultures could only balk for they’ve seen their city in action. This year they will again present a colourful and lively 70 nation community, who together organise both the street parade and street festival. With a staggering 79 groups, 4000 participants and 67 floats, everyone will be outfitted in either their country’s traditional dress or imaginative costumes and move through the streets of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, presenting their vision of the dynamic and multicultural melting pot that is Berlin. The Werkstatt der Kulturen (Workshop of Cultures) organisation started the carnival

With the collapse of the wall, the organisers wanted to send a clear signal and show that this newly reunited Berlin, both old and new, could be a model of true integration with its stronger than 872,000 people with an immigrant background. “The Carnival of Cultures developed against the backdrop of Berlin’s growing internationality and the resulting influx of immigrants from all areas of the world,” says Nadja Mau, one of the carnival organisers. She is convinced of its effect, “The carnival encourages and stimulates popular art and culture at the highest possible level”. Similar to the Notting Hill Carnival in London and the Rotterdam Zomer Car-

nival, this event has a spirit of integration with which people of any age and background can identify. In previous years, however, the event organisers were worried about whether it would happen at all; many of the groups who completely self-financed their participation as well as the floats, ran out of money and subsidies were often cut. This Whitsun, however, when the beautifully decorated floats glide past filled with people drumming and dancing madly, you won’t sense any worry. It’s a day of celebration. Time and again the participants demonstrate their spectacular creativity, most likely wanting to be the ones to grab the coveted prize for the best float.

It is somehow rather typical of Berlin that the two designers who chose the forceful-sounding name of “Icke Berlin” (“Icke” being the word for ‘I’ in the Berlin dialect) for their label were not actually born in the city. Barbara Kristen comes from the Black Forest, while Luisella Ströbele comes from the Swabian region. However, the creations they come up with in their Kreuzberg shop-come -workshop most definitely have a touch of the spirit and sassy attitude for which Berlin is famous. Their dresses, skirts, blouses and T-shirts are characterised not only by the high-quality materials used. Each piece also allows the buyer to make a cheerful statement, whether it’s through chair-o-planes swinging on skirts, white hares adorning T-shirts or cows grazing on waistcoats. Amongst other remarkable works is “Voids”, a series of spaces inside buildings. In “Memory Void”, only one visitor is allowed to enter, you can find the installation “Shalechet - Fallen Leaves” by Menashe Kadishman. It consists of thousands of metallic leaves given faces. Whoever runs over it makes a noise - and thus the people murdered in the Holocaust are given back their voices.

Holocaust, unforgotten

By the late 80s the idea of building a memorial to the Jews of Europe to act as a reminder of the Holocaust had begun to take root. Bringing this idea to fruition would take another ten years. Peter Eisenman’s wonderful design depicts a field with 2,700 wave-shaped stones laid out like grave stones. Underneath the field an “Information Centre” complements the memorial. Like many synagogues, this one only becomes visible once you have passed the front part of the building. Originally, the former lodge building was a place where Jewish students excluded from the German school system were taught - and later - were prepared for their emigration. Founded in 1898, the Library of the Jewish community in Berlin was closed by the Nazi regime. Around 100,000 books were lost in the war. In 1959, in the western Berlin Fasanenstraße, work began on its reconstruction. Volumes were collected on Jewish religion, history and culture. In 1989 after the unification, the Library founded in 1974 in Mitte was relocated here. Today, 80,000 media sources can be found in the house, including books, magazines, audiovisual media and microfilms on religion and research in different languages.

Watching films This year, the Jewish Film Festival will be taking place for the 19th time. The festival management have secured “Zaytoun” as the opening film, the new offering by award-winning Israeli director Eran Riklis, who made his name with films such as “Lemon Tree” and “The Syrian Bride”. It tells the story of Palestinian boy Fahed, who meets downed Israeli fighter pilot Yoni. From erstwhile enemies they eventually become companions and friends. The director and the young actor Abdallah El Akal will present the film at the opening gala on 29th April in Potsdam. The non-profit Berliner KinderTheater (Berlin Children’s Theatre in English) has been dealing with the issues faced by children since 1986. To do so, it draws on material from the world of international children’s literature. Professional actors perform in front of large, family-friendly rows of seating in summer and winter alike. Yet the plays are always educational. The BKT also offers support for drama teachers upon request. in summer, the BKT performs on the open-air stage at Spandau Citadel, while in winter it moves to Fontane House in the Märkisches Viertel.

A French-born chef of Portuguese descent serves up Russian dishes with an international flavour on Berlin’s most famous boulevard

new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation. But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children. And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern flair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.
