18 50 years John F. Kennedy

n 26th June 1963 the then President of the U.S. John F. Kennedy visited West Berlin. When he delivered his historic speech in front of Schöneberg Town Hall, it was also a promise to the people of the city divided by the Wall since 1961. „Ich bin ein Berliner“ Kennedy said, and so assured all Berliners that they were not alone. Numerous events are taking place throughout Berlin until 29th June to mark the 50th anniversary of Kennedy‘s visit (page 20). If you want to escape the busy life of the inner city for a few hours, there are plenty opportunities at hand that don‘t involve a long walk: you can explore the capital‘s numerous parks and gardens by (rented) bike, stroll through weekly markets or even breathe in the country air in Dahlem (p. 36). Or you might opt to visit a theatre, cabaret or musical theatre (p. 38). If, tired but happy, you want to round off your day then you don‘t have to look far to ﬁnd the perfect place to do it: countless restaurants are just waiting to spoil you with their specialities (p. 46).

Art in the bunker: The Boros Collection

Since it was opened in 2001 the Jewish Museum in Berlin has developed into one of the most prominent museum institutions in Europe. yz The spectacular building designed by Daniel Libeskind is a masterpiece and has long since become a Berlin landmark. You can experience two millennia of German-Jewish history here.

This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre-high specimen of Chinese bog wood. Many artists mount their works in the bunker themselves.

ost people thought he was a clown. He saw himself as a braggart, a spendthrift, an instigator. The painter, photographer and installation and performance artist was also a drinker, dancer, musician and writer. He did everything to excess, which in 1997 at just 43 years of age cost him his life. On 25th February Martin Kippenberger would have been 60 years old.

“I was born as the second son of the second marriage on the second Thursday in the second month of the second decade in the second half of the last century of the second millennium” - thus wrote George Widener on a self-portrait. From childhood

the 51-year-old was fascinated by numbers and data; it was accomplishing everyday tasks that he found problematic. As part of the “Secret Universe” series, the number junkie’s first solo European show is on now at the Hamburger Bahnhof. Widener’s work shows maps and sketches on scraps of paper, executed with a meticulous hand. Fortunately for him, the artist from Kentucky has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. It means he no longer has to live alone with savant syndrome, or to be seen by others as crazy. Anyway, weren’t most of the major artists kind of crazy?

ive decades ago, transatlantic relations had been fairly strained. Only two years earlier, GDR head of state Walter Ulbricht had begun the construction of the Berlin Wall. From the perspective of West Berlin and Bonn politicians, the Americans had not done enough to intervene against the division of the city. In his famous speech at Schöneberg Town Hall, John F. Kennedy praised freedom. About one and a half million people heard his words: “In the world of freedom, the proudest boast is: Ich bin ein Berliner!” Finally came the awaited sign that Ame-

rica would not abandon the walled city. In East Berlin they answered with a countersign: on 28th June, which was the 70th birthday of Walter Ulbricht, leaders there staged a “triumphal journey with the leader of the cosmonaut people”, Nikita Khrushchev. The Soviet leader delivered a eulogy to communism, fanned by ﬂags in front of the Red Town Hall in Mitte. Many U.S. presidents have visited Berlin since. Both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush have been to the city at least ﬁve times, but no visit has been so celebrated by its citizens than that of John F. Kennedy. To mark

the anniversary of this historic date, various venues are now organising a programme to remind people of the importance of the President’s visit. Guided bus tours, exhibitions, readings, lectures, ﬁlm screenings, interviews with witnesses and panel discussions - more than 50 events recall the President’s unforgettable performance and the Cold War. 50 years later, current U.S. President Barack Obama will now accept Angel Merkel’s invitation. On 18th and 19th June, he will address the people of Berlin - with a speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

In 1961, Willy Brandt and John F. Kennedy met for the first time - and immediately hit it off. On the anniversary of the “Berliner” speech, the Willy Brandt Forum will commemorate Kennedy’s visit with a special programme. A lecture and a special tour offer an insight into the relationship between the two politicians.

Photo exhibition With its exhibition “John F. Kennedy in Berlin”, the Berlin Wall Foundation recalls the the mood in the city on 26th June 1963. Photographer Michael Ernst-Reiner was 23 years old when JFK visited. He was one of nearly two million citizens who thronged the squares of West Berlin to catch a glimpse of the President. He followed the President through almost the entire city with his camera. Ten of these photos can now be seen. Quotes from witnesses accompany the exhibition.

Secrets MUSIC IN THE CITY What began as a small initiative in Paris 30 years ago has long since become a popular event worldwide: at the beginning of summer, live music of almost all genres also sounds on the streets of Berlin during the Fête de la musique.

In July 1962, John F. Kennedy allowed the installation of microphones in his phone in the Oval Office and in the Cabinet Room. 260 hours of recording excerpts have been published in the book “Secret records from the White House” (Hoffmann & Campe, 2012). The book provides the basis for a reading and discussion between Andreas Etges, historians and curators of the 2003 Kennedy exhibition in the German Historical Museum and Thomas J. Putnam, director of the JFK Presidential Library, Boston.

Every summer 100 to 200 poets from all over the world travel to Berlin to show how poetry can be expressed today. As the Berlin Poetry Festival has shown for 14 years, poetry has long since been presented and experienced in ways that go far beyond the covers of a book. There are spoken word experiments in theatre, performance, music, dance, film and digital media. This year the invited guests deal with the question of where the home of the poetry could be located. i Schaubühne In 1928, in this contemporary theatre’s striking rotunda – constructed by Erich Mendelsohn –, Berlin’s largest cinema, the Universum, started up. Since 1962 it has housed the Berlin theatre on Lehniner Platz, which has made its name through new interpretations of well-known pieces by the likes of Shakespeare and Ibsen.

Depeche Mode got the title of ‘synthesizer band’ from The Rolling Stones ; they have been making music together since 1980 and enjoy a growing fan base from the ages of 20 to 50. Their tour schedule to promote their new album „Delta Machine“ reads like a stadium list for the football World Cup. Open Air An idyll under the trees Beer and well-chilled white wine taste best when the sun is shining, when you can sit comfortably under the trees and a drink doesn‘t go to your head too quickly. Like just now. Negotiating the pavements in the city once again becomes an extended slalom run as restaurant life moves outdoors. And that’s a good thing because it promotes togetherness – more so on a robust wooden bench than on white-clothed tables. But you can’t find a table under a tree just anywhere; they inevitably have something to do with restaurants or beer gardens. The history of beer gardens harks back to Bavaria more than 150 years ago. To keep their winter-brewed beer cool in the summer, brewers began to use storage areas above the ground as well as their brewery cellars, for example under the dense canopy of horse-chestnut trees. Who could blame the brewers for providing samples of their skills in the same place, albeit without culinary offerings; people had to provide those themselves. It’s thanks to this tradition that Bavarians are still permitted to bring picnic baskets and snacks into beer gardens. In Berlin such a thing is not permitted, of course. What’s eaten is what’s on the menu of the house. But it’s just as comfortable as in Bavaria. We have the Dahme and the Spree, a few lakes and shady trees. And of course, countless open-air bars, where you can really enjoy the Berlin summer.

Typical Ethiopian dishes, which are eaten with ﬂat bread… and your ﬁngers. The chicken in spicy paprika sauce and cheese is delicious. All the dishes are served with either mild or hot spices. The decoration is colourful and folkloristic. Not to be missed: the typical Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

There is a true explorer and adventurer is this kitchen: melons, one time as red jelly, then yellow as a compote, grilled Greenland halibut lightly perfumed with savoury ginger or Iberico pork on a bed of artichokes and topinambour puree – the customer should prepare himself for an exciting evening. Conveyor bridge F 60 With its countless braces, the steel colossus that is the “Förderbrücke” (conveyor bridge) F60 built between 1989 and 1991 resembles a horizontal Eiffel Tower. Except that, at 502 metres long it dwarfs the 320 metre high Paris landmark. The F60 is one of the biggest pieces of mobile machinery in the world and was used as an overburden conveyor bridge for lignite mining. In 1992 it was decommissioned in its original location of Lichterfeld and opened up to the public as part of a walk-through mine. Guided tours and an yz “F60 dinner” are available. A light and sound installation shows off the mine at night in a splash of colour whilst work noises from the belt create an atmosphere of real mechanical activity.
