he international fashion scene meets twice a year in Berlin. Well-known fashion houses like Laurèl, Filippa K, Penkov and Michalski show their newest collections while fashion schools are also represented by their young talent (Page 46). After an exciting day in the fashion metropolis, it’s time for a little relaxation. Whether you opt for a floatation tank, a massage or a manicure – what could be better? (Page 35) Apart from jumping into deliciously cool water of course! Choose from Berlin’s 26 different summer and open-air swimming pools. From historic Wannsee Beach and quiet family pools to outdoor oases with sports pools, diving platforms, slides and other features for kids, there’s something for everyone (Page 38). The capital’s theatres, musicals and variety shows entice visitors out in the evening. The Neuköllner Oper opera house, for example, is staging the absurd and hilarious “Frau Zucker will die Weltherrschaft” (Ms. Sugar is Looking for World Domination), while the Komische Oper opera house ends the season with a look back at its best productions (Page 14). If you feel like getting a breath of fresh country air you can always head out into Brandenburg, to the town of Bad Liebenwerda or the old brickworks at Ziegeleipark Mildenberg (Page 62). To round off the day, why not treat yourself to a lovely cold beer in one of the city’s beer gardens or a nice meal in a restaurant (Page 52).

A trip to Friedrichshagen on the Müggelsee lake with a visit to “Die Spindel” restaurant on Bölschestraße, where Hendrik Canis and his wife celebrate regional cuisine and offer fantastic wines from southern Germany.

Berlin’s Theatre Scene: Large and small stages

erlin is home to more than 50 stages, ranging from large theatres to small off-stage establishments. Some are known globally, like for instance the “Deutsche Theater”, featuring the “Kammerspiele”. It was founded as Friedrich-Wilhelmstadt Theatre in 1849/50. Max Reinhardt and Otto Brahm, Heinz Hilpert and Wolfgang Langhoff found fame here. Actresses such as Nina Hoss and Corinna Harfouch are part of the cast today. The Berlin Ensemble, founded by Bertolt Brecht, is located just a stone’s throw away from downtown and is also considered one of the most prestigious establishments in the city. The Hebel Theatre offers first-class dance shows. Productions by Constanza Macras, a native Argentinian who’s won fame for her colourful political choreographies, frequently entertain audiences here. In contrast, the “Volksbühne” at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz represents a new era of experimental theatre. The Schaubühne at Lehniner Platz is located in the far west of the city. As a modern day theatre, it continually invites new, innovative producers and authors such as Sarah Kane and Lars Norén onto its stage. Musical lovers favour the Stage Theater at Potsdamer Platz or the Theater des Westens (Westside Theatre), where the Renaissance façade and the neo-baroque interior make the theatre a unique visitor experience in its own right. Whilst large government-funded theatres are spared massive financial pressure and fear of closing, many of the smaller stages have to fight for their existence. The survival of the ‘Theatre and Comedy’ on Kurfürstendamm, for example, has still not been secured. Since Berlin has always been a political hub, the city is also home to many cabaret theatres. The Distel und die Stachelschweine (The Thistle and the Porcupines) are probably the most famous, but numerous other cabaret stages also exist. Anyone craving more than just a political theatre experience should pay a visit to the “Bar jeder Vernunft”, which uses a beautiful old mirrored tent as its stage. Technically, the Sony Store is a gallery rather then a store for shopping in. All the newest technologies introduced to the market by Sony are here to be admired. Some of the items are available for testing. People from all over the worlds browse the four floors of this glass department store to discover the media giant’s zeitgeist. Especially convenient: A visit to the Sony Store can be combined with a sightseeing tour of the monumental Sony Centre. The Centre’s structure with a gigantic roof seemingly placed on top of the building makes it appear oddly fragile. The centre had its ribbon cutting debut in the year of 2000. Ever since then visitors have poured into the building in their droves to take pictures in front of the fountain or stop and eat at one of the restaurants. Strandbad Wannsee “Pack die Badehose ein ...” is an old German song meaning ‘pack up your swimming trunks’. Back when this song was a hit the Wannsee beach complex’s popularity stretched far beyond Berlin’s city limits. This 355,000 square metre facility can accommodate a maximum of 50,000 bathers. Its 1,200 metre long beach offers the chance to play volleyball, basketball and table tennis. The water slide is pretty popular.

An 83 metre high-speed slide plus a diving facility with 1 and 3 metre diving boards and 5 and 10 metre platforms are not to be missed. Pascal Kluttig said: “As an agency manager, you have to keep it together during Fashion Week.” He knows what he’s talking about. His agency “Seeds” is considered one of Berlin’s leading agencies in the industry. His

models walk the most sought-after catwalks in the world, in Paris, Milan, and New York. “Since its debut in 2007, Berlin Fashion Week has evolved into a mega-event that is represented all over the city,” Kluttig added. Twice a year, for six days each, Berlin becomes the centre of attention for the world’s most beautiful industry. International models present collections by Hugo Boss, Escada or Rena Lange. Meanwhile fashion magazine editors not only report the latest trends, but also the restaurant where Kate Moss and co. eat their salads. A great event, but not one that’s intended for the general public? “The great thing

about Berlin Fashion Week is that many of the promoters make their events accessible to fashion oriented visitors,“ Kluttig said. In contrast to the traditional fashion capitals such as Milan or Paris, fewer high-fashion labels show their collections here. To compensate, Berlin promotes the young and creative contributions of native Berlin designers like Kaviar Gauche, Wunderkind, Lala Berlin and Evelin Brandt. “Berlin will be Berlin“, explained Kluttig,“the emphasis here is not so much on generating business, but rather on having an inspiring industry get-together and creating new trends.”

The “Showroom Meile” (Showroom Mile) has been part of Berlin Fashion Week since 2008. This initiative from the Senate Department for Business, Technology and Women’s Issues, in conjunction with Berlin-based companies and institutions, enables 145 Berlin designers plus artists from Germany and further afield to show off their current collections and other works to a wide audience. Forty well-known Berlin locations are being turned into showrooms for the occasion.

n reality, Roman Polanski's 1967 Hollywood film “The Fearless Vampire Killers or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck” was a parody of the vampire films so popular at that time. Nevertheless, both the public and film critics were intrigued. Nowadays “The Fearless Vampire Killers” is a cult phenomenon. As is the musical production, which Polanski himself staged in Vienna in 1997. Fifteen years on, this vampire story is the most successful German-language musical of all time, with 6.5 million people having seen it. This is due not least to Thomas Borchert, who has already enjoyed much success for the musicals “Cats”, “Les Misérables” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Borchert has grown up but still retains his mild, low-key manner,

his bright eyes, curly hair and soft features. Yet when he emerges from the cloakroom and strides across the stage with that stern look in his eyes and wearing that billowing overcoat, his booming voice does away with any doubts as to who is calling the shots in this show. Borchert is Count von Krolock, the Grand Vampire. The musical gets under way at a leisurely pace and follows Polanksi's film pretty closely. We hear the story of the vampire researcher Professor Abronsius (Veit Schäfermeister) who, together with his naive assistant Alfred (Michael Heller) makes his way to Transylvania to boldly hunt vampires. They take up residence in a Transylvanian mountain village where Sarah (Amelie Dobler) catches Alfred’s eye. But vampire Count von Krolock

also takes a shine to the young innkeeper's daughter and invites her to visit him in his nearby castle. Abronsius and Alfred follow her, their aim being to finally prove that vampires do exist. But there's one thing they don't see coming: Sarah, Alfred and Abronsius are on the menu for the vampires who are holding their annual ball. A creepy flying insect gave the Ungeheuer in Neukölln its name. The breakfast could not be more attractive

n Berlin-Neukölln, in the Körnerkiez between Hermannstraße and Leinestraße, tucked in amongst betting shops and pubs, you just do not expect a café like this one. The Ungeheuer restaurant is tastefully fitted out with furnishings lovingly selected from the flea market and above them, the creature that gave the cafe its name, a grisly-looking flying insect, sways gently. The menu is not expansive, but the breakfast (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can be assembled for each customer according to his or her individual wishes. Terrific homemade curd cheese and fruity jam is served both with the classic and vegetarian breakfast. Some of the bread is even baked on the premises and tastes wonderful. The Mediterranean scrambled eggs with dried tomatoes and ham are to be recommended. Portions are lavish and on Sundays a Prosecco is served with the Graved-Lunch-Breakfast – everything at reasonable Neukölln prices.

A small place, located on the Linienstrasse, which just like the food – has got that traditional Big Apple style: dark

ortunately in Berlin there are still restauraters who are not fighting over the choicest spots in the trendiest areas, rather appreciating the tranquillity of some sweet location right on the outskirts. Sonja and Peter Frühsammer are two such gastronomes. Their restaurant is nestled in the charming district of Berlin called Schmargendorf, which sounds further out than it really is, just a mere 15 to 20 minutes by train or car (from the city centre) or, in Berlin terms, no distance at all. Frühsammers restaurant is located in a beautifully restored country villa. On cooler days you can sit in the elegant dining room, look out of the large casement windows at the tennis enthusiasts in the neighbouring club. In the warmth of summer, sit in the expansive garden and enjoy a chilled glass of one of the white wines selected carefully for his guests by Peter Frühsammer. Standing over the stove is Sonja

Frühsammer, one of the few women at the pinnacle of the cooking business. Her cuisine is creative, packed with intense flavour: smoked mango, pickled salmon, cod with calf’s head vinaigrette, just to name a few. Guests can choose between the house menu with Havelzander in sweetheart cabbage leaf or braised shoulder of lamb with sage gnocchi, or they can select directly from the card “dishes that speak to you”: Icelandic sea urchins, grilled prime Hereford rib eye steak, calf’s kidneys with beans, dauphine potatoes and

shallots. Conveyor bridge F 60 With its countless braces, the steel colossus that is the “Förderbrücke” (conveyor bridge) F60 built between 1989 and 1991 resembles a horizontal Eiffel Tower. Except that, at 502 metres long it dwarfs the 320 metre high Paris landmark. The F60 is one of the biggest pieces of mobile machinery in the world and was used as an overburden conveyor bridge for lignite mining. In 1992 it was decommissioned in its original location of Lichterfeld and opened up to the public as part of a walk-through mine. Guided tours and an yz “F60 dinner” are available. A light and sound installation shows off the mine at night in a splash of colour whilst work noises from the belt create an atmosphere of real mechanical activity. Just over 700 years ago, a lovelorn woman is said to have called out from the “Lubwartturm” (Lubwart Tower): “Will lieben! Wer da?” (I want to love! Who will love me?) Ever since, the little town on the Black Elster River has borne the name Bad Liebenwerda. Nowadays, the spa town is known and loved for its mud baths. Those in search of the ultimate in relaxation will also find what they are looking for at the “Erlebnisbad Lausitztherme” (Lusatia thermal baths water park) in Wonnemar or in the “Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft” (Lower Lusatia Moors) wildlife park.

No other Prussian King has Frederick II’s notoriety. He’s said to have mocked the idea of mercy and lacked all clemency yet excelled in the spirited culture of debate. He was patriarch of a large family, a state leader and reformer and, not least, a grandiose self-propagandist. To mark the monarch's 300th birthday, his life and that of his subjects will be remembered throughout Brandenburg. The town of Wustrau whose annual “Seefestival” (lake festival) has long been part of Brandenburg's cultural calendar, is also dedicating itself to “Old Fritz”. As part of the “Kulturland-Themenjahr”, a preview of Marcus Born's play “Friedrich II. – vom Rebell zum Thronfolger” (Frederick II. – From Rebel to Heir Apparent) will be performed on 12 July. The première follows on 13 July. The “Zietenschloss” (Zieten Castle) provides a dreamlike backdrop to the performance. In addition, casting Anika Mauer in the role of the Prussian King was an inspired choice. She’s already made a name for herself at the Berlin Renaissance Theatre, the Deutsches Theater and the Berliner Ensemble. The production focuses on the psychology of the young Frederick and the question of how the young, artistically trained, defiant Crown Prince became the Prussian King Frederick the Great, absolute ruler and commander.
