And so it is no coincidence that it’s during these early autumn days that the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) or International Consumer Electronics Show gives the public an opportunity to catch a glimpse into the future of consumer electronics. This is the place to be for anyone who wants to know what kind of appliances will be in people's homes in the near future. What is the question most frequently asked of you? “Can we reserve tickets for the 'Reichstag' (parliament building) or the 'Fernsehturm' (TV tower)?” These two attractions are nearly always already booked out.

Every genuine resident of Berlin will have ask ed themselves at some point why the rou nd pastries with the ma rmalade filling are only called “Berliners” outside of the German capital city. Within Berlin itself, they are sim ply called “Pfannkuch en” (doughnuts). The confusion is made worse by the fact that what are considered “Pfannkuchen” in the rest of Germany are cal led “Eierkuchen” (pancakes) in Berlin.

What has been the most difficult task to date that a guest has presented you with? A famous American actor wanted to buy a German shepherd dog and take it back with him to the US. This required a lot of phone calls and visits to the relevant authorities! Which restaurants do you recommend to your guests? In Berlin, the choice is really huge ... but “Brenners” and “La Forchetta” are definitely among my favourites. Is there anything you don't like? The many, sometimes unnecessary, road works. n reality, Roman Polanski's 1967 Hollywood film “The Fearless Vampire Killers or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck” was a parody of the vampire films so popular at that time. Nevertheless, both the public and film critics were intrigued. Nowadays “The Fearless Vampire Killers” is a cult phenomenon. As is the musical production, which Polanski himself staged in Vienna in 1997. Fifteen years on, this vampire story is the most successful German-language musical of all time, with 6.5 million people having seen it. This is due not least to Thomas Borchert, who has already enjoyed much success for the musicals “Cats”, “Les Misérables” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Borchert has grown up but still retains his mild, low-key manner,

his bright eyes, curly hair and soft features. Yet when he emerges from the cloakroom and strides across the stage with that stern look in his eyes and wearing that billowing overcoat, his booming voice does away with any doubts as to who is calling the shots in this show. Borchert is Count von Krolock, the Grand Vampire. The musical gets under way at a leisurely pace and follows Polanksi's film pretty closely. We hear the story of the vampire researcher Professor Abronsius (Veit Schäfermeister) who, together with his naive assistant Alfred (Michael Heller) makes his way to Transylvania to boldly hunt vampires. They take up residence in a Transylvanian mountain village where Sarah (Amelie Dobler) catches Alfred’s eye. But vampire Count von Krolock

also takes a shine to the young innkeeper's daughter and invites her to visit him in his nearby castle. Abronsius and Alfred follow her, their aim being to finally prove that vampires do exist. his two-part installation from Gabriel Orozco consists of various objects and photographs. For this work, the artist picked up thousands of objects that had been thrown away. With its industrial waste, the “Asterisms” exhibition takes up some of the themes typical for this artist: poetic encounters with everyday materials and tension between nature and civilisation.

The International Radio Show (known as the IFA in German) is the leading global fair for consumer electronics. Visitors can admire the latest technical innovations until 5th September – presented by celebrities like rapper 50 Cent and celebrity chef Tim Raue

hen it comes to kitchen equipment, IFA director Jens Heithecker raves about it: “So-called white goods have become highly technical pieces, like multi-functional coffee machines and beautifully designed kitchen equipment that mean you can prepare lots of different things all at the same time, really easily.” Networking and multi-functionality are the overall main topics of this year’s IFA, according to Heithecker. The International Radio Show, which first took place in Berlin in 1924, is one of the capital city’s unmissable trade fairs and is the most important

global fair for so-called consumer electronics. Around 1,200 exhibitors from 32 countries present their innovations here every year, from mixers to mixing desks, and from voice-controlled TVs to the latest cameras. The IFA is no longer a meeting point exclusively for techno-geeks. “We have international stars like the rapper 50 Cent, who will spend several days playing music with a headphone manufacturer, and prominent chefs like Tim Raue and Stefan Marquard, who include the latest kitchen equipment in their shows. The IFA is really an opportunity to have fun learning about technology,”

says the event’s director. If you need a break after all the walking around and shopping in the Internationale Congress Centrum (ICC) trade fair halls, Heithecker recommends relaxing and chatting with beer and music in the summer gardens: Max Herre, Tim Bendzko and Heinz Rudolf Kunze give concerts here. Heithecker has a clear vision for 2024 when the International Radio Show will be 100 years old: “It will even be possible to change the colour of the walls electronically; you’ll not only be able to have a massive TV, but you’ll never need to wallpaper again.”

Mellowpark: BMX and Skater Park

ince the newly renovated Mellowpark re-opened its doors in Berlin-Köpenick in May it’s been a real highlight, and not only for hard-core skaters and BMX fans. Europe‘s largest extreme sports and leisure park doesn’t just offer the largest open-air skate and BMX park in Germany with 2,000 square metres of road surface, a mini ramp with a spine, a mini mini, half-pipe and trails. It also has another area for other sports like basketball and beach volleyball. It’s also pretty cool that BMX bikes (4 Euros/hour), skateboards (2 Euros/hour) and other equipment are available to hire.

› Skatepark in Berlin This rink offers everything necessary to really soar: curbs, rails and ramps. A special girl’s league is available for female skaters. Adults can watch on the spectator’s platform or relax at the café.

In conjunction with Berlin State Museums, the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter or the Association of Distinguished and Quality German Wine Estates) invites you to a double feast for the senses: “Große Weine – Große Kunst” (Big Wines – Big Art) is the name of the event being held in Berlin's Gemäldegalerie art museum, which is taking place again this September following last year’s success. One hundred vintners, 200 wines and 1,000 paintings await lovers of fine wine and art on the evening of 3 September from 6.00 to 10.00 pm. Full-bodied Rieslings, aromatic Silvaners, grey and red Burgundies will be presented in person by the vintners themselves. Only on rare occasions like this evening can the diversity of German wines be experienced as up close and personal as this. Wine connoisseurs’ enjoyment will be supplemented by drama, song and two first-time performances – a veritable art trail through the Gemäldegalerie. Anyone who can’t make it on the evening of 3 September can still learn all about vintners, viticulture and wine in any of Berlin’s well-stocked wine stores, such as Wein & Glas Compagnie, Viniculture and Planet Wein.

Typical Ethiopian dishes, which are eaten with flat bread… and your fingers. The chicken in spicy paprika sauce and cheese is delicious. All the dishes are served with either mild or hot spices. The decoration is colourful and folkloristic. Not to be missed: the typical Ethiopian coffee ceremony with freshly roasted coffee beans.

In the Yiddish dialect, “Schmus”, “schmisen” or “schmusen” means something like “to converse”, “talk with one another” or “share something”. And that is exactly what guests will find here: a place where people can take a break and talk about whatever’s going on.

Pork, shellfish and crustaceans are generally avoided at Café Schmus, even though its food is not cooked according to kosher laws. In the mornings, the museum café offers a breakfast buffet. The lunchtime dishes vary from day to day but are always made from regional ingredients while salads, a variety of sandwiches, fresh cakes and biscuits are all available too. The café is located in the pre-WWII building of the Jewish Museum Berlin right next to the light-filled glass courtyard. Conveyor bridge F 60 With its countless braces, the steel colossus that is the “Förderbrücke” (conveyor bridge) F60 built between 1989 and 1991 resembles a horizontal Eiffel Tower. Except that, at 502 metres long it dwarfs the 320 metre high Paris landmark. The F60 is one of the biggest pieces of mobile machinery in the world and was used as an overburden conveyor bridge for lignite mining. In 1992 it was decommissioned in its original location of Lichterfeld and opened up to the public as part of a walk-through mine. Guided tours and an yz “F60 dinner” are available. A light and sound installation shows off the mine at night in a splash of colour whilst work noises from the belt create an atmosphere of real mechanical activity. Apart from the actual concerts themselves, the concert series “Klassiker auf Landpartie” (Classical Outings) has, since 1990, been offering a supporting programme that invites the public to explore the area near each concert venue. Visitors can learn more about the region by way of castle, village and museum tours and visits to historic monuments as well as themed tours of nature reserves. Readings and concert introductions complete the programme of concert-related events. Since its establishment, the programme has seen over 500 concerts performed at more than 200 different venues in Brandenburg. The performance locations include churches, monasteries and castles as well as natural and industrial heritage sites. The artistic programme is characterised by a mixture of internationally renowned soloists and ensembles, a collaboration with Brandenburg's orchestras that goes back years as well as the promotion of young artistic talent. Visitors from Berlin can book åbus transfers to each concert together with tickets. All buses depart from Fehrbelliner Platz train station (underground lines U3 and U7, corner of Barstraße at Wilmersdorf Rathaus).
