T

he month of October is perfect for a city break. The weather is no longer so warm that you want to spend the entire day outside, but it's still fine enough to sit on a bench, enjoy the sunshine and admire the autumn colours in the park. The month is often known as “Golden October”. In Berlin, it could also just as well be called "Sparkling October" or "Bright October", thanks to the veritable spectacle of colour that the city turns into with the Festival of Lights. For the festival, more than 60 landmarks, monuments and squares will be illuminated, transforming nightttime Berlin into a luminous cityscape (page 48). This time of year is ideal for exploring the city during the day too, of course. We have put together a list of ten places located off the tourist track but still definitely worth a visit, including the Liebermann Villa in Wannsee, the Buddhist House in Frohnau and the "Tuschkastensiedlung" ("paintbox town") in Treptow (page 36). As always, Marco Polo Berliner has loads more suggestions for things to see and do in the city: the best premières and plays, the most exciting exhibitions and the highlights of Berlin's autumn gallery season, as well as the most tempting cafés, bars and restaurants.

El Dorado for fans of clasical music: the best operahouses and concert- halls.

Every city has its own little rules and peculiarit ies. Berlin, too. There are a couple of things that are typical of the Germ an capital – and we’ve compiled a list of them just for you: Scheese When a Berliner uses the word “Scheese” (meaning “banger”) as a term of endearment for his car, this is a reference to the French word “la chaise” (chair), with a movable chair being meant in the figurative sense. The real “Scheesen” are the old Trabis, the legendary East German car model, in which tourists can now take a fantastic tour of the city. At the same time, this insignia symbolises the wearer's membership of “The Golden Keys”, the professional association for German hotel porters founded in November 1952 in Bad Homburg. Today, the association has around 200 members divided between seven branches, of which the Berlin one is the largest. The Berlin branch of “The Golden Keys” was recently augmented by five new members who were admitted into the association with a special ceremony. The world in which we live, as viewed by 19 artists from 15 different countries on four continents. Visions from dance, theatre, performance, visual arts, music, film and architecture: Foreign Affairs is the name of the new Festival of International Performing Arts, which is replacing the “Spielzeit Europa” theatre season. The artistic director is Frie Leysen, Belgian festival organiser and grande dame of the international independent arts scene. It is a global “clash of visions” bringing together different artistic positions and perspectives. On the Day of German Unity, for example, two theatrical installations will deal with issues of post-colonial strategy – a topic of particular interest for Germany, where consciousness of the country's colonial past is only very slowly developing. Since 1892 this building has played host to the most controversial directors. From Erwin Piscator in the 1920s to Castorf and Schlingensief in the 1990s. he Neuköllner Oper (Neukölln Opera House) took a liberal approach to the adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's "Pariser Leben" (Paris Life) (1866) and transformed it into "Berliner Leben" (Berlin Life), making exemplary use of its core qualities of charm, attention to detail and eccentricity in the process. The original Swedish aristocratic couple who get caught up in the bohemian lifestyle of Paris around the time of the World Fair are transformed into

a Ukrainian businessman (Clemens Gnad) and his wife (Sarah Papadopoulou), to whom a dodgy drug dealer sells his ramshackle apartment building as a special events theme hotel. musical rendition of loyalty and betrayal is what this concert is all about. “The best thing about music is not the notes”, Gustav Mahler once claimed, meaning that it isn't until a work has been performed by an artist that it actually comes to life. The idea behind the “Faithful!” series is to have the same musical work performed by different ensembles and soloists and then compare the results. Four ensembles will perform the same pieces, inviting a comparison of their different renditions. The first work comes from the year 1940. After its initial performance went badly,

idelio should be our guiding star and the great symphonic hymn to the highest form of love, one that is tolerant...” It was with these words that Georg Hartmann, the first artistic director of the Deutsche Oper, justified his choice for the opera house's opener. Around a century later at the big gala event taking place on 20 October, the second act of Fidelio will be centre-stage once again. During the course of its history, the Deutsche Oper has become one of the most important venues for Wagner's operas. Parsifal has also been rehearsed once more in preparation for the opera house's 100-year anniversary. The impetus for establishing an opera house on Bismarckstraße in 1912 came from wealthy citizens in Charlottenburg. Their aim was to create a modern alterna-

tive to the "stiff" representational theatre of the "Hofoper" (Royal Opera House) on Unter den Linden. With the establishment in law of the Greater Berlin area in the 1920s, the Deutsches Opernhaus (German Opera House) became the Städtische Oper (City Opera), a prestigious venue for sophisticated musical theatre. The 1920s were highly innovative and creative, with artistic directors who didn’t flinch from staging works considered scandalous at the time. This was all to change in the 1930s: in February 1933, Nazi storm troopers stormed the Städtische Oper and tried to force its then artistic director Carl Ebert to present the national socialist concept of art. Rather than do this, Ebert chose to emigrate and the opera house was used by the Ministry of Propaganda in the years that followed. Joseph Goebbels personally

ensured that a primarily German repertoire made it into the opera house's programme. The building was completely destroyed during the war. Six weeks after the Berlin Wall was completed, the opera house as we know it today – with great views of the stage from almost 2,000 seats – designed by Fritz Bornemann, was opened on 24 September 1961 as the only musical theatre in West Berlin. You won't find better acoustics in any other Berlin musical theatre. The 100th anniversary of the founding of the Deutsche Oper will take place on 20 October. After the concert, a party is planned for opera house foyer. Komische Oper: Xerxes

sort of “Baroque Muppet show” is how director Stefan Herheim describes Georg Friedrich Händel's "Xerxes", performed for the first time in London in 1738. And this is exactly how he stages the piece too. Händel's opera is full of silliness. When the romantically excessive as well as obviously addled Persian king Xerxes (Stella Doufexis) devoutly idolises and sings to a tree at the beginning of the opera, it is clear that the work is not about subtle psychological exploration and inscrutably complicated affairs of the heart, but rather happy-go-lucky silliness. In this comedy of errors, which gathers pace quite quickly Xerxes falling in love with his brother Arxamenes' (Karolin Gumos) lover Romilda (Brigitte Geller), it quickly becomes almost impossible to keep track of the different strands of storyline and intrigue that are skated

over more and more quickly as the opera progresses. Händel and his librettists drive the mechanics of the comedy into high-speed idle acceleration with beautiful light-heartedness and irreverence – together with a series of errors, Doppelgänger motifs and costumes where genders can be easily

changed. It is from this exuberantly funny source material that the production’s rapidly occurring ideas develop. Xerxes 7.10. 7 p.m. and 13.10. 7.30 p.m. | 11–55 € | 3,5 hrs. | Behrenstr. 55–57 | Mitte | tel. 030 20 26 00 | www.komische-oper-berlin.de | S/U Friedrichstraße

the store where owner Andrea Jacobs describes the clothes as “being fashion of a different kind”. Hundreds of ball gowns, evening gowns and cocktail dresses from the 1950s to the 1980s are on sale or, one could almost say, exhibited, here. Each one an original, each with its own unique history. Sequins, frills, petticoats – all the magical, luxurious seducers from the world of ladies fashion in past decades can once more show themselves off to the shopping public here. The clothes sold here have little to do with the alternative look one sees all the time on the streets of Berlin. It is somehow rather typical of Berlin that the two designers who chose the forceful-sounding name of "Icke Berlin" ("Icke" being the word for ‘I’ in the Berlin dialect) for their label were not actually born in the city. Barbara Kristen comes from the Black Forest, while Luisella Ströbele comes from the Swabian region. However, the creations they come up with in their Kreuzberg shop-come -workshop most definitely have a touch of the spirit and sassy attitude for which Berlin is famous. Their dresses, skirts, blouses and T-shirts are characterised not only by the high-quality materials used. Each piece also allows the buyer to make a cheerful statement, whether it's through chair-o-planes swinging on skirts, white hares adorning T-shirts or cows grazing on waistcoats. Between 1981 and 1987, a number of historic buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which had originally stood in other places, were reconstructed to mark Berlin's 750th anniversary. These buildings include the "Gasthof Zum Nussbaum" (Walnut Tree Inn) on Propststraße, which dates from the year 1507. Incidentally, it is in the area around the "Nikolaikirche" (Church of St. Nicholas) that the city was founded. It was here in his summerhouse, built in 1909, that Max Liebermann found the quiet he needed for his late work. "Schloss am See" is what he named his refuge and it was in the residence's garden – which was designed according to the artist's own plans – that he painted over 200 more pictures. In 2006, the castle was renovated in keeping with conservation practices and opened up to the public. The top floor houses Liebermann’s last works that were painted here. With its rare plants, the garden alone is worthy of a visit in its own right. yz At Café Max meanwhile, visitors can soak up the special atmosphere of the place while treating themselves to coffee and a slice of cake.

Art in a Bunker This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown here in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre high specimen of Chinese bog wood. Many artists mount their works in the bunker themselves. Visits to the collection are only possible with an advance booking.

A small park with a big impact: on the 66-metre high Kreuberg hill, you can enjoy beautiful views in all directions from the neo-Gothic von Schinkel monument built in memory of the Napoleonic Wars (1818-1821). yz The highlight of the park is the waterfall forming a magnificent line of sight as far as Großbeerenstraße. It was the film Easy Rider that made Dennis Hopper into an icon. But he was a talented photographer too. Between 1961 and 1967 he took thousands of photos which remained in boxes, gathering dust until his death. His vintage photos feature people who today have cult status: Jane Fonda was among those photographed, along with pop artists Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol as well as hippies in the street. The pictures bear witness to an exciting era in history and reflect the atmosphere of the time. Hopper himself chose the 400 photographs for his first exhibition. The 300 photographs from the latter half of the 19th century show a significant piece of colonial history. It wasn’t just maharajas and rich businessmen who appeared in front of the camera. Photographs offered them something that painting couldn’t: promotional material

olour photography first established itself in the fashion and advertising industries in the 1930s and eventually became an indispensable tool for the mass media and the entertainment industry. Colour was considered a suitable tool for depicting the world as it could be in our imaginations and wishes. Often eschewed in the spheres of reporting and

documentary-making, colour photography did not emerge as an art form in its own right until the 1970s. The group exhibition "Colour" shows over 100 photographs from the likes of Edward Steichen, Jeanloup Sieff, Helmut Newton and Nadav Kander.

KW Institute of Fine Arts Berlin: Wael Shawky

ael Shawky is delighting the international art scene with his video project on the history of the crusades. And now he's exhibiting in the KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin (KW = “Kunstwerke” or works of art). Shawky, born in Alexandria in 1971, won the Schering Foundation Art Award in 2011, granted in conjunction with the KW Instititute for Contemporary Art Berlin. "His re-performances of historical and political events open up a wealth of unusual perspectives", was how the jury justified their decision. But the crusades as the subject of child’s play? In Wael Shawky's video series “Cabaret Crusades”, the opposing camps from the year 1095 stand ready to do battle again – only this time as puppets. Jerusalem is in flames. Biennale 2003, the Istanbul Biennial 2011 and this year's Documenta 13 in Kassel were fascinated by Shawky's animated worlds that are at once both childlike and terrifying. his year's festival is the eighth to be held in the city. It is free of charge for the public and always mesmerises Berliners and visitors alike: from the 10th to 21st October around 60 buildings, monuments, streets and entire squares will be bathed in bright light for the Festival of Lights. The Brandenburg Gate will shine like never before for the United Nations Year of Cooperatives 2012. Of course, these major sights will not simply be lit up. Each structure has

its own unique look – one that will change several times over the course of the evening. Last year, 17 artists and studio groups with a special affinity to the subject of light took part in the event. The illuminated locations lie on the city's east-west axis, between the Radio Tower in Charlottenburg and the Oberbaum Bridge in the eastern part of Kreuzberg. Needless to say, not everyone will want to explore the whole thing on foot so various festival tours

are available to book. How about flying in a ‘Light Balloon’ and looking down on the festival from high above? Or if you prefer to stay on terra firma, you can always take the bus, ride in a motorbike convoy, hop on a segway or travel by limousine. A trip on the Riedel shipping company's Light Ship is a particularly beautiful way to see it all. For more information, please visit the organizer's website www.festival-oflights.de.

The Events

D The Boat Trip

Whether you're interested in culture, music or sport – there's something for everyone here. Because once again this year, a number of events will take place to accompany the Festival of Lights.

The LightShip gives visitors to Berlin the opportunity to enjoy the illuminated sights of the Festival of Lights during a two-hour boat cruise of the city's waterways. Everything on the LightShip itself will also be imaginatively illuminated, with the boat's own spotlights bathing bridges and buildings on the riverbanks in magical light during the cruise.

A

Nacht der offenen Türen (open night) On 13 October, between 7 p.m. and midnight, selected buildings in Berlin will grant the public an opportunity to have a look behind their illuminated exteriors. Guided tours will be available.

World Doctors Orchestra In the World Doctors Orchestra, around 100 doctors from over 20 countries swap their scrubs for evening dress and tailcoats and play some music. Proceeds from the event will go to a charitable project. 14 October, 4 p.m. | €25–55 | Philharmonie Berlin | Herbert-vonKarajan-Str. 1 | Tiergarten | S/U Potsdamer Platz

Charity Programme “Aktion Augen-Licht” (literally, the “Eyesight Campaign”) is the official charity supported by the Berlin city foundation. It kicks off at 3 p.m. on 13 October with a “blind date” of sorts, where make-up artist René Koch will help blind people to create their own perfume. Lots of other activities will follow. For more information on the other charity campaigns, please visit www.festival-of-lights.de

Jazz in the Ministerial Gardens The Berlin Jazz Festival will include performances at six different locations in the illuminated gardens of the representative offices of the federal German states. 19 October, from 7 p.m. | Tickets from € 20, available from the representative office of Rhineland-Palatinate | In den Ministergärten 6 | Tiergarten | S/U Potsdamer Platz

oKtoBerFest in Berlin The atmosphere inside the 80 x 20 metre-large original Paulaner marquee is one of real Oktoberfest, with the brass band and Bavarian specialities on offer really setting the right tone. The pork hocks, “Leberkäs” (meatloaf), pretzels and Bavarian veal sausages with radish salad are great for lining the stomach as you treat yourself to a few glasses of Paulaner's special Oktoberfest brew. You'll completely forget that you're not in Munich!

In the supreme discipline of Freestyle, the riders do some spectacular jumps with rotations, grabs and board-offs, while in the Race category the fastest competitor is determined from five individual races. Berlin Master chefs 2012 Tribute to the Best Restaurateurs in the City

Announcement of the Berlin Master Chefs 2012 (from left to right): Brandenburg Master Chef: Matthias Rösch (Restaurant Villa am See im Sport & Spa Resort A-ROSA Scharmützelsee, Bad Saarow), Robert Herr (General Manager InterContinental Berlin), Gastronomic Innovator: Herbert Beltle (Aigner, Altes Zollhaus, Weingrün), Stefan Elfenbein (Chairperson of the Jury), Biggest Improvement of the Year: Siegfried Danler (Restaurant Pauly Saal), Berlin's Trendiest Restaurant: Mani, represented by Martin Schanninger, Melanie Bähr (Manageress Berlin Partner), Best Berlin Host: Michael Köhle (Hugos im Hotel InterContinental), Berlin Master Chef: Hendrik Otto (Lorenz Adlon im Hotel Adlon).

Dietmar Gust/Berlin Partner

It's not that long ago that Berlin played second fiddle in the orchestra of international haute cuisine, to use that particular musical metaphor. The food was considered uninspiring, and diners expected little in the way of innovation or surprise. All the renowned chefs gave the city a wide berth. But, over the past ten to fifteen years, all that has radically changed. Berlin now has the most Michelin-starred restaurants of any German city and international star chefs like Pierre Gagnaire and Alain Ducasse are attracted by the new atmosphere. The positive developments in the restaurant scene are also due in part to Berlin Partner GmbH, which has been honouring the best chefs in Berlin and Brandenburg every year since 1997. The “Berliner Meisterkoch” (Berlin Master Chef) award is considered a real mark of quality and an expression of the capital city's sophisticated food culture. The Berlin Master Chefs for 2012 will be honoured in just a few days. So it’s a good opportunity to visit the award-winning restaurants before the rush.

n Berlin-Neukölln, in the Körnerkiez between Hermannstraße and Leinestraße, tucked in amongst betting shops and pubs, you just do not expect a café like this one. The Ungeheuer restaurant is tastefully fitted out with furnishings lovingly selected from the flea market and above them, the creature that gave the cafe its name, a grisly-looking flying insect, sways gently. The menu is not expansive, but the breakfast (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can be assembled for each customer according to his or her individual wishes. Terrific homemade curd cheese and fruity jam is served both with the classic and vegetarian breakfast. Some of the bread is even baked on the premises and tastes wonderful. The Mediterranean scrambled eggs with dried tomatoes and ham are to be recommended. Portions are lavish and on Sundays a Prosecco is served with the Graved-Lunch-Breakfast – everything at reasonable Neukölln prices.

››Barcellos – Salon Sucré Gastronomy and hair styling? The combination sounds unusual, but recently in Berlin there have sprung up some cafés, which skilfully combine the two. ortunately in Berlin there are still restauraters who are not fighting over the choicest spots in the trendiest areas, rather appreciating the tranquillity of some sweet location right on the outskirts. Sonja and Peter Frühsammer are two such gastronomes. Their restaurant is nestled in the charming district of Berlin called Schmargendorf, which sounds further out than it really is, just a mere 15 to 20 minutes by train or car (from the city centre) or, in Berlin terms, no distance at all. Frühsammers restaurant is located in a beautifully restored country villa. On cooler days you can sit in the elegant dining room, look out of the large casement windows at the tennis enthusiasts in the neighbouring club. In the warmth of summer, sit in the expansive garden and enjoy a chilled glass of one of the white wines selected carefully for his guests by Peter Frühsammer. Standing over the

The Toys our Grandparents had Visitors to the “Spielzeugmuseum” (Toy Museum) in the Havelland region will learn how important play is for human beings' intellectual and social development. The museum is devoted to an entirely different world of play from the electronic one of today, focusing instead on the play of old that appealed to the senses and to feelings. Pieces on display include examples of German toy manufacturing from the past two centuries. There was a time when the town of Brandenburg an der Havel was known as “Toy Town”, a place from which toys were distributed to nurseries all over the world. Castles and Palaces

For Railway Fans

The magnificent facades of royal Prussian palaces, castles and fortresses that adorn Brandenburg will remind visitors of the spirit of times past. In addition to Sanssouci, Boitzenburg Castle, Neuhardenberg Castle and Rheinsberg Castle situated on the lakeside, Meseberg Baroque Castle (see photo) – the guest house of the German federal government – is one of the most famous historic buildings. yz On 9 June, The castle is open to the public on June 9th.

Since 1990, the “Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde” (Fans of Berlin Railway) club has been running museum trips on the southern section of the “Heidekrautbahn” (Heather Railway) that’s not used by passenger trains. Passengers travel by steam trains, railcars and other vehicles of yesteryear. The trips set off from the provisional stop of “Märkisches Viertel” on Wilhelmsruher Damm, not far from Berlin-Rosenthal train station. Getting on board one of the 1920s carriages gives a sense of what travelling by train was like in the past as you sit back on the comfortable wooden benches or padded seats.

The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem. A new tree has been planted to commemorate what is probably the most famous pear tree in literary history.

During the GDR era, there was a “forbidden city” located in the town of Wünsdorf which was reserved for the military. After reunification, the site fell into disrepair – until the book lovers moved in, that is. Today, thousands of valuable books from the past and present tempt visitors to the forest town to browse and buy. A veritable “booktown” has been created here, based on the example of the British town of Hay-on-Wye located on the WelshEnglish border. Visitors who want to learn more about the Wuensdorf area's 100 years of military history will also find something to interest them. The town has a museum on the subject, with guided tours of the huge bunker systems. Events are held on a regular basis.

Live like the Slavs In present-day Lower Lusatia at the western and southern edges of the Spreewald forest, 50 ringwalled castle complexes were built during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. The builders were members of the Slavic Lusizi tribe, who had lived there since the 8th century. A model reconstruction of these complexes can be visited at Raddusch. The 19th UNIDRAM International Theatre Festival this year takes place in Potsdam, where young artists will gather from 30 October to 3 November for a spot of adventurous theatre. Intriguing imagery, dazzling visual experiments and twists on the concept of illusion and realty will all converge here, contrasting starkly with some provocative and resolute political views. Over 100 artists from more than ten countries will transform Potsdam's Schiffbauergasse into a lively place of creative exchange. Internationally renowned artists like the Dutch puppeteer Neville Tranter and his Stuffed Puppet Theatre, Belgian theatre company Mossoux-Bonté and the Swiss “kraut_produktion” company will appear, as well guest appearances from groups that are staging productions in Germany for the first time. In fact, eight of the 13 invited productions are German premières. The festival will open with “Heute: Kohlhaas” (Today: Kohlhaas), a coproduction by the Belgian AGORA Theatre and the Bonn-based Marabu Theatre. The festival takes place under the patronage of Professor Sabine Kunst, Minister for Science, Research and Culture in the State of Brandenburg, as well as Jann Jakobs, Mayor of the City of Potsdam.
