ovember is the perfect month for a city break and, given that the weather is more likely to be poor at this time of year, this is a great time to visit a museum, gallery or exhibition. And there is no shortage of them in Berlin – at any one time there is usually a choice of special exhibitions, often with so much to see and discover that a second or third visit is a must. In addition, our magazine invites you on a tour of discovery of a quite different kind. To mark the day the Wall fell – 9 November 1989 – we set off on a trail of our own to discover traces of this once divided city and see for ourselves whether the area around the former wall really has made the transition from wasteland to “ﬂourishing landscape” (page 46). Along the way we will meet “new” Berliners from all corners of the globe. In fact, people from over 190 countries as diverse as Russia, France and Vietnam have settled in the city - see p. 38 onwards to ﬁnd out where they go to relax and enjoy themselves. Haus der Berliner Festspiele Berlin Jazz Festival At the start of November, Berlin will once again become the capital of jazz. After more than 40 years, the Berlin Jazz Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious genre events in Europe. In 1964, when the festival was still operating under the name “Berlin Jazz Days”, none other than Martin Luther King sent a foreword in which he emphasised the power of jazz music in supporting the American Civil Rights Movement. This year, the new Artistic Director Bert Noglik has shaped his programme around the concept “Jazz is a Spirit”. On various stages - the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, the Academy of the Arts, the A-Trane and the Quasimodo -artists will dedicate themselves to the various different types of jazz, from swing and big band, to avant-garde and klezmer. And this is exactly how he stages the piece too. Händel's opera is full of silliness. Flowers and tradition

A connection between East and West, a shopping strip, a real estate Mecca – you have to hand one thing to the space between the Neue Nationalgalerie on Potsdamer Straße and Leipziger Platz: today, it is (once again) the focal point of the capital. In 1838, the area was boosted by the construction of the Potsdam international train station as a transit hub for goods and trade. And back when Berlin’s first underground line starting winding its way through the soil underneath the square, the city’s avantgarde also used to gather there. Café Josty – at that time a meeting point for writers and artists – is still open today, around 200 metres away from its original location. The first set of traffic lights in the city is also still here, and lives on as a popular photo spot. But the bombing by the Allies in the Second World War was a turning point. Soon afterwards a flourishing black market emerged on the “three country corner”, as the intersection between the Soviet, British and American sectors was jokingly named after 1945. When the Berlin wall cut right across the square the area became a no man's land, only to become a popular spot for property investors after the fall of the wall. From being the biggest construction site in Europe, Potsdamer Platz has now won back its reputation as a commercial centre. Highlights of the area include the shopping strip in the Potsdamer Platz arcades, the annual Berlinale film festival in the Berlinale Palace, the casino and Europe’s fastest lift in the Kollhoff Tower.

However, I always like to make one exception: the Box of Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie (BOB for short) recently hit upon the idea of only selling items by Berlin designers. Not all of the bags, postcards and pictures have to be related to the capital, but everything here is Made in Berlin. gifted photographer. From 1961 to 1967 he took thousands of photos, which remained in cardboard boxes until his death in 2010. They show people who have now become icons, such as Jane Fonda, and those surrounding Andy Warhol and other pop artists. We see hippies and hells angels in a relaxed atmosphere, and photos of the uprisings which were part of daily life in that era. The 400 photos which are on display in the Martin Gropius building were chosen by Hopper himself for his first exhibition in 1970. They document an exciting era, and really reflect the atmosphere of that time. A cult!

THE TRAIL OF STONES November 9th will be the 22nd anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. So it’s an apt occasion to look at the roughly 165km-long circular path of the wall in greater detail. To this day, many memorials remind passers-by of the former border between East and West

n the East, the wall was grey; in the West, it was painted with brightly-coloured grafﬁti. The GDR border guards did not like seeing the wall artists. In the West, the citizens could climb observation towers and look out “over there”. “Where was it then?” ask visitors to the city today. A good 50 years after its construction, the only thing left of the old “defence against capitalist imperialism” is a 165km-long cycle path and walkway. It runs past the Brandenburg gate and through the areas where the wall separated the district of Wedding from that of Prenzlauer Berg, where it enclosed villages and settlements like the tiny towns of Lübars in the north-western part of the city and

In the days and weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, London-based photographer Michael Hughes set off to document what was happening. Along the former border between East and West Berlin, he captured moments and scenes with his camera which bear witness to this period of upheaval. The photographs shown here were taken where the districts of Kreuzberg (in the former West) and Mitte (in the former East) meet.

Steinstücken in the south-west, which could only be reached along a narrow pass. The wall divided Berlin for almost three decades. Each decade threw the city into a completely different light: in 1961 both East and West were still reeling from the shock of the division; 1968 brought the inﬂuence of the student revolution and Kommune 1 in the West; 1973 brought the World Festival in the East - a kind of “Communist Woodstock” with eight million attendees. The 1980s were dominated by Glasnost and the fall of the wall. On 9 and 10 November 2012, experienced joggers are going to run the entire length of the path. But you can also explore the wall

path at your own speed and under your own steam. In Berlin’s central district, the Berlin Wall History Mile is an explanatory border along the path of the former wall that’s marked with a double row of paving stones and cast iron plaques. The Mile gives information about the history of the construction and the opening of the wall at over 30 locations in four languages. “Ghost stations” where West Berlin underground trains were not allowed to stop and many memorials remind visitors of spectacular attempts to ﬂee and their often deadly consequences. Of course, the outer districts also offer an insight into the period when the city was divided, which is what we want to show here.

Have you ever heard of St. Martin’s Day? It’s the day when children carry home-made lanterns through the streets after nightfall and sing songs. St. Martin’s Day is observed every year on the 11th November in honour of Martin von Tours, a holy man about whom legends abound. The day has its roots in Old Bavaria and Austria. And although Berliners are very discriminating when it comes to any kind of customs and traditions, St. Martin has managed to win a firm place in the capital’s heart. This is owing in no small part to the Martin’s goose which effectively heralds the start of feasting season. Its on the menu at numerous eateries from November 11th, crisp-roasted and served with red cabbage, roast apple and dumplings made from either bread or potato. Going out to eat Martin’s goose together with friends or relatives is so popular that advance booking is essential.

A French-born chef of Portuguese descent serves up Russian dishes with an international ﬂavour on Berlin’s most famous boulevard

new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation. But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children. And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern ﬂair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.

In his time (1785-1871), Prince Hermann Ludwig Heinrich von Pückler-Muskau was seen as restless and foolhardy. The town of Neuruppin in Brandenburg was the birthplace in 1819 of Theodor Fontane, one of Germany’s greatest writers. A few kilometres further south is the village of Ribbeck, made famous in Fontane’s poem “Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland”, where visitors to the churchyard can still see the stump of the pear tree featured in the poem.
