Both its large boulevards and (the little) smaller districts have all got their festive finery on - there are lights, glitter and sparkles as far as the eye can see. Schrippe This special “Berlinese ” term for an oval-shap ed bread roll with a slit in the midd le has its origins in the German words “aufgerissene Rinde” (ripped open crust). On the other hand, native Berliners occasi onally use the phrase “olle Schrippe” (which approximates to “old woman”) to des cribe women who no longer look as fresh – or good enough to eat – as the popular breakfast bre ad rolls. My Berlin Tips What do you consider an absolute must for visitors to Berlin? Kurfürstendamm boulevard, for getting a bit of the big city vibe during a shopping trip. Where do most of your guests go ﬁrst? The luxury department store KaDeWe and the many little shops around Kurfürstendamm.

What would it be like if three icons from the history of music Theatre were to do a show together in the present day? We are talking about the Hollywood oroducer Busby Berleley who wrote show girl's history, Broadway producer Florenz Ziegfeld who achieved worldwide fame with "Follies", and Esther Williams, who was the first to bring danve choreographies up off the stage floor into the air. She created the first ever water musical in Hollywood with the film "Bathing Beauty" in 1945. The show now at the Friedrichstadt palace has tried to build a bridge between those times and modern ife with a lot of technology. Featuring more than 100 artists, "Show Me" is the biggest resident theatre show in the world. "We breathe so we can live" say the makers of the musical, "but the biggest moments are those when we hold our breath". This means the highlights are more than spectacular. What used to be the most important cabaret show in the former East Germany now works with two of its own ensembles who transform their selfpenned programmes into satirical theatre. n reality, Roman Polanski's 1967 Hollywood film “The Fearless Vampire Killers or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are in My Neck” was a parody of the vampire films so popular at that time. Nevertheless, both the public and film critics were intrigued. Nowadays “The Fearless Vampire Killers” is a cult phenomenon. As is the musical production, which Polanski himself staged in Vienna in 1997. Fifteen years on, this vampire story is the most successful German-language musical of all time, with 6.5 million people having seen it. This is due not least to Thomas Borchert, who has already enjoyed much success for the musicals “Cats”, “Les Misérables” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Borchert has grown up but still retains his mild, low-key manner,

his bright eyes, curly hair and soft features. Yet when he emerges from the cloakroom and strides across the stage with that stern look in his eyes and wearing that billowing overcoat, his booming voice does away with any doubts as to who is calling the shots in this show. Borchert is Count von Krolock, the Grand Vampire. The musical gets under way at a leisurely pace and follows Polanksi's ﬁlm pretty closely. We hear the story of the vampire researcher Professor Abronsius (Veit Schäfermeister) who, together with his naive assistant Alfred (Michael Heller) makes his way to Transylvania to boldly hunt vampires. They take up residence in a Transylvanian mountain village where Sarah (Amelie Dobler) catches Alfred’s eye. But vampire Count von Krolock

also takes a shine to the young innkeeper's daughter and invites her to visit him in his nearby castle. Abronsius and Alfred follow her, their aim being to ﬁnally prove that vampires do exist. But there's one thing they don't see coming: Sarah, Alfred and Abronsius are on the menu for the vampires who are holding their annual ball. sort of “Baroque Muppet show” is how director Stefan Herheim describes Georg Friedrich Händel's “Xerxes”, performed for the ﬁrst time in London in 1738. And this is exactly how he stages the piece too. Händel's opera is full of silliness. When the romantically excessive as well as obviously addled Persian king Xerxes (Stella Doufexis) devoutly idolises and sings to a tree at the beginning of the opera, it is clear that the work is not about subtle psychological exploration and inscrutably complicated affairs of the heart, but rather happy-go-lucky silliness. In this comedy of errors, which gathers pace quite quickly Xerxes falling in love with his brother Arxamenes' (Karolin Gumos) lover Romilda (Brigitte Geller), it quickly becomes almost impossible to keep track of the different strands of storyline and intrigue that are skated

over more and more quickly as the opera progresses. Händel and his librettists drive the mechanics of the comedy into high-speed idle acceleration with beautiful light-heartedness and irreverence – together with a series of errors, Doppelgänger motifs and costumes

Never before has the artistic photography of the GDR been presented with such depth and with so many facets: engaging, experimental and reflective. The aim was never to show the GDR in photos but merely to treat photography as an artistic means of expression. Yet a story of daily life in the GDR is of course told, particularly in the first part of the exhibition that deals with “reality-engagement criticism” and because many of the photographers were interested in depicting a true reflection of reality. Another section of the exhibition ties in with the modernity of the 1920s. The third part, which is entitled “mediumsubject reflection” mainly shows a disillusioned view of society. Art in the bunker: The Boros Collection This is the second exhibition from Christian and Karen Boros shown in a surface air-raid shelter from the Second World War. The exhibition features pieces from the 1990s to the present day, including works by Klara Lidén, constellations by Thomas Ruff and Ai Weiwei, whose work is represented in the bunker by way of a six-metre-high specimen of Chinese bog wood. Many artists mount their works in the bunker themselves. gifted photographer. From 1961 to 1967 he took thousands of photos, which remained in cardboard boxes until his death in 2010. They show people who have now become icons, such as Jane Fonda, and those surrounding Andy Warhol and other pop artists. We see hippies and hells angels in a relaxed atmosphere, and photos of the uprisings which were part of daily life in that era. The 400 photos which are on display in the Martin Gropius building were chosen by Hopper himself for his first exhibition in 1970. They document an exciting era, and really reflect the atmosphere of that time. A cult!

The development of Christmas pyramids can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages. The ďŹ rst ones were made from four sticks wrapped in ďŹ r sprigs, with lights added on top. This home decoration was supposed to keep evil spirits away. Pyramids from the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) with rotating impellers were especially popular and went on to become an indispensable feature of Berlin's Christmas markets in the 19th century. This exhibition shows 100 specimens, dating back to the year 1900, with the fourmetre high local pyramid from Cunersdorf which is decorating the museum's garden.

Collection The ďŹ rst chambers of wonder were set up during the Renaissance: collection rooms in which valuable works of art, rare natural curiosities, scientiďŹ c instruments, objects from other worlds and unexplainable things went on display. Berlin also had an art chamber. Founded by Elector Joachim II, the few objects it contained have now been distributed to various museums. the Christmas market surrounding the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Charlottenburg. After a long day of retail therapy on the Kudamm shopping street, you can relax here and nibble roast almonds while marvelling at the 80 beautifully decorated Christmas trees. Not far from here is the market in front of Charlottenburg castle which serves as a beautiful backdrop that’s been artisticallydecorated. There is also a carousel and a petting zoo, which makes for the perfect mix of food market and children's paradise. The winter world on Potsdamer Platz is also popular with Berliners and visitors alike,

particularly because you can try your hand at curling or take part in a free ice skating lesson. The king of all markets, however, is the Christmas market on Gendarmenmarkt. In a diverse programme of events, the organisers provide a colourful mix of handicrafts, culture, art and music, and all kinds of activities for children. Don’t worry if you simply can't make it before Christmas Eve because of the wide range of marketson offer; many of the larger markets – like that one at Gendarmenmarkt – are open even after the holiday period.

Cocktail bars Stirred and not shaken How do cocktails get their names? Often it’s thanks to their inventors: Gibson, Ramon and Collins. Or they’re named after their ingredients: Bourbon Highball, Dry Martini and Tequila Sunrise. But Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Salty Dog? Even if these names don't exactly whet your appetite, they do at least make you curious. But mainly they make you want to take a discovery tour through the Berlin bar landscape. The capital offers a broad spectrum of different bars with the most varied of themes. For those in the know from around the world, the Berlin bar scene has been one of the most exciting for several years. Laid-back connoisseurs and night owls come from far and wide to visit the banks of the Spree. Perhaps the unpleasant winter weather is suited to both the occasion and the place, because on 15 December a new permanent exhibition will open at the Seelow Heights Memorial. Entitled “Seelow Heights – A Place of Remembrance and Encounter” it will commemorate the more than 100,000 soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Seelow Heights - the biggest battle of the Second World War fought on German soil. On 16 April 1945, the last major Soviet offensive on European territory called the "Berlin Operation" began. Its aim was to ﬁnally break the Nazi regime's resistance and end the war in Berlin. Forty years after its foundation, the Seelow Heights Memorial now has a new forward-looking approach. Information on the battles fought west of the Oder based on the latest academic research, as well as the history of this place of remembrance and its position in the German "Erinnerungskultur" (culture of remembrance) since 1945 together form the basis for this new permanent exhibition and outdoor facility, which is protected as a historic monument. In future the memorial will, to an even greater extent than previously, become a place of discussion and dialogue with eastern European countries who endured the greatest suffering under German occupation.
