his magazine is the fifth edition of MARCO POLO Berliner. It’s been five months since we first presented you with our new magazine, a veritable lucky dip of interesting event tips, attractive shops, restaurants and lots more, all of which should help make your stay in Berlin even easier. Whether or not our idea worked is something we wanted to find out from members of Golden Key Berlin-Brandenburg, an association made up of concierges from the region’s 5-star hotels. After all it’s the concierges who have direct contact on a daily basis with you, Berlin’s visitors, and who are familiar with many of your wishes and with the expectations and preconceptions you have when coming to the German capital. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for the constructive discussion we had with you (see photograph). Lots of discussions, useful information and news also await all those attending the “Lange Nacht der Museen” (Long Night of Museums) on 25 August (see page 46). This year, it’s all about Berlin’s 775th anniversary. And, as always, we are here to provide you with lots of useful tips for the occasion. So go on: enjoy Berlin!

What has been the most difficult task to date that a guest has presented you with?

Convincing the Berlin public transport company BVG to deploy a hydrogen bus, because a guest in the hotel really wanted to travel on one. Even though the bus was not scheduled, it was used for a route in Tegel in the early evening.

When Georges Bizet's “Carmen” was first performed on 3 March 1875 at the Opéra Comique in Paris, it was initially not well-received by a public who thought its content too unconventional and that its creator had strayed too far away from the accepted forms of l'Opéra Comique. Now popular the world over, this great opera tells the story of a young gypsy girl who works in a cigar factory and falls in love with the toreador Escamillo. When her soldier admirer Sergeant Don José learns that she loves another, he is seized by a fit of jealousy and kills her. There’s now a chance to see the story of this “femme fatale” brought to the stage in an open-air performance which will take place against the stunning backdrop of Berlin's Wannsee lake.

The show, which runs from 16 August to 2 September, is a German language production by none other than the Oscar-winning director Volker Schlöndorff. His aim is not to give the opera too 'modern' a feel but to make the most of the grand setting of Wannsee to create a suitably solemn mood. Expect a real flavour of the bullring and plenty of colourful fans!

hat could be better than gliding over the water by boat on a warm summer evening? Last summer, Schiffstour Aquarella Berlin boat tour company started operating in Berlin and became an instant success. Its founder was City Stiftung Berlin (in English: Berlin City Foundation), which was already widely acclaimed for its Festival of Lights.

The decorated boats set off from three different landing stages. It doesn't matter where you board, because later everyone gathers at the Humboldthafen harbour near Berlin's main train station. From there, the boats cruise through Berlin's city centre like a colourfully illuminated pageant. Immediately after boarding, passengers who have also booked dinner on board can look forward to a host of culinary delights: broc-

coli soup with cream topping and almonds as well as tomato or cream of mushroom soup are all on the menu, followed by herring fillets or schnitzel (with the alternative option of ricotta tortellini for vegetarians), and then chocolate mousse, ice cream cake or red fruit jelly for dessert. The dinner can be booked either as a package offer where guests help themselves to the all-you-caneat summer buffet, or as a three-course à la carte menu.

During the meal, the boats cruise past Berlin's government district, through the city's historic centre and the Nikolaiviertel area. At the Mühlendammschleuse lock, the boats pass through to the upper level of the River Spree together. Once on top, the first highlight of the cruise awaits the guests. The boat parade with music and lights is greeted

with a spectacular display of fireworks from several points along the banks of the river.

All the boats meet afterwards in front of the O2 World venue, where passengers can marvel at the boat and light ‘ballet’ “Flames of Water” to a classical music soundtrack.

Here, light and visual effects are projected on to water fountains. After a big farewell fireworks display, the ships finally return to their respective landing stages.

nce you’ve found your way past the fridge, the Chameleon in the Hackesche Market feels like a normal theatre... well, nearly.

Then, suddenly: circus. And what a circus! The curtain is used for graceful acrobatics, the fruit turns out to be a juggling accessory and daredevil stunts take place on the furniture. What is special about the

In the district of Steglitz you’ll find Schloßstraße, a colourful shopping street that developed over the course of decades in the old West Berlin.

There are more than 800 shops located here between Walter Schreiber Platz and Rathaus Steglitz (“Rathaus” = town hall), making Schloßstraße the second most important shopping area in Berlin. And that's not all.

There are also cinemas, theatres and different kinds of malls in close proximity to one another. Boulevard Berlin, one of the largest downtown shopping malls in Germany, opened its doors here in April. Another special highlight in the area is the old town hall, built in the Gothic style, which has been converted into a shopping centre called “Das Schloss”. Just like its American cousins, this place is all about ostentatious decor and special campaigns that vary from season to season. Meanwhile, visitors can marvel at the false starry sky under the centre's roof at any time of year!

renzlauer Berg has long had the name of having more children than any other district in Germany – even if its record-breaking days are long gone. Nevertheless, this once trendy student area with its many nightclubs is now largely a children's – or rather – a family neighbourhood.

Taking cover in a U-Bahn bunker

Behind the slats In 1999 this little chapel was finally completed or “topped out”. It is named after the old 1894 Church of Reconciliation (Versoehnunskirche) that was rendered inaccessible to its congregation after the 1961 construction of the Berlin wall partitioned the city. On Bornholmer Bridge, that until 1990 had an East German border crossing point in front of it, a strangely out of place red piece of furniture now tempts passers-by to sit down. “Mind the Gap” is the name of this glaring red, chair-like sculpture by the artist Twin Gabriel. The work is the result of a competition on the theme of transition or crossing (“Übergang” in German) launched by the Senate. The aim of the 1996 competition was to place artistic symbols at former inner city border crossings.

There are a lot of emotions connected with Berlin's Friedrichstraße train station built in the year 1962. Until 1990 this “palace of tears”(“Tränenpalast” in German) as the main hall was known locally, was the point of departure for those leaving East Germany and heading to West Berlin. An exhibition entitled “GrenzErfahrungen” (border experiences) is currently on display here.

The first so-called “Passierscheinabkommen” (literally meaning “pass agreement” in English) between East Germany and the Berlin Senate was concluded in 1963. From that point onwards, the Oberbaum Bridge served as a border crossing point, albeit one that could only be used by pedestrians. Nowadays, visitors and locals alike can enjoy a fantastic view from this, Berlin's most beautiful bridge.

Eastside Gallery yz At 1,316 metres, the Eastside Gallery is the longest

Arboreal reminders “Parlament der Bäume”, or “Parliament of Trees” in English, is the name of the installation created by artist Ben Wagin in 1990 to commemorate the many people who died trying to cross the Berlin Wall. The exhibition on the former border strip consists of trees, memorial stones, pieces of material evidence from the border facilities, pictures and text. It was put together by a variety of different artists.

Trying to escape

The first fatality Günter Litfin was shot while attempting to cross the border at the Humboldt Hafen (harbour) in central Berlin on 27 August 1961, making him the wall's first victim. Forty two years after the death of his brother, Jürgen Litfin unveiled this memorial (“Gedenkstätte” in German).

It was way back in 1963 that the museum at Checkpoint Charlie opened with an exhibition on the “best border security system in the world”, as the East German generals called the Berlin Wall. During her lifetime, American photographer Diane Arbus' (1923 –1971) works were shown in just two group exhibitions. Since then, her name has become one that’s mentioned in the same breath as the really big names in the world of photographic art.

Her models were often from the margins of American society.

Her subjects were usually strangers who she simply approached on the street when she wanted to make a portrait of them. This exhibit in Berlin will show around 200 photographs. In addition to well-known photos, the exhibition also includes many previously unreleased pictures from the Diane Arbus estate.

Neue Nationalgalerie: Paul McCarthy The huge, often sexually provocative pop sculptures of snails and dwarfs from the American artist Paul McCarthy are occasionally reminiscent of the works of Jeff Koon, not least in the way they achieve such high prices on the art market. erlin was first mentioned on paper 775 years ago. Reason enough to mark this special anniversary with exhibitions and festivities. The Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin (Berlin City Museum Foundation) is acknowledging the anniversary with 75 portraits of historical personalities and 700 photographs of Berlin residents, which give a deep insight into the development and diversity of the city.

Bayer-Haus “So gesehen” (in English: “From this perspective”) was the name of the exhibition where Horst Hinder presented his vividly composed views of the city of Berlin in 2009.

The current exhibition, entitled “Paris | Berlin – So kann man es auch sehen” (in English: “Paris |

Berlin – You can look at it that way too”), expands the subject matter to include new city views, this time from the perspectives of two different photographers: Horst Hinder and Philippe Saunier. Hinder takes and produces his photos digitally, whereas Saunier works with a medium format camera on analogue film, which he then develops himself on baryta paper. In fact, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the twinning of the two cities Berlin and Paris. The anniversary is, however, not the reason for the exhibition since the idea occurred to photographers Hinder and Saunier before it. But who knows? Maybe this occasion was what ultimately gave them the final push needed to convert their idea into reality.

his two-part installation from Gabriel Orozco consists of various objects and photographs. For this work, the artist picked up thousands of objects that had been thrown away. With its industrial waste, the “Asterisms” exhibition takes up some of the themes typical for

this artist: poetic encounters with everyday materials, the presence of traces of erosion and the constant tension between nature and civilisation.

To mark “Friedrich-Jahr” (literally the “Year of Frederick”, symbolising the 300th anniversary of his birth), the collection is being published in full for the first time in a combination of both

arl Hagemeister was one of the first members of the Berlin Secession art association.

His impressionistic paintings are devoted to the rather unspectacular landscape of his native Brandenburg. His personal view of nature avoids symbolic exaggeration, which was very typical of the work produced in regional artist colonies around the year 1900.

very soldier in the Lestwitz Regiment who showed special courage in the Battle of Kunersdorf near Frankfurt an der Oder on 12 August 1759 –a battle that proved disastrous for Frederick II – received a reward of eight “Groschen” (German tenpence coin) for his efforts. At the time, this was the equivalent of a week's wages for a Prussian foot soldier. No other European monarch reshaped the coinage and monetary system of his country to the same extent as Frederick II of Prussia. With his coinage reforms of 1750 and 1764, he not only took his country in a new direction; to a great extent he also predetermined later developments in the rest of Germany. Many events from Frederick's reign – battles and victories alike – are immortalised on the medals.

he programme for this summer's Lange Nacht der Museen (Long Night of Museums) contains a full 200 pages. It's not surprising really: since its establishment in 1997, the event has become much more than just an “open house” for a few of Berlin's museums. “In recent years, the Lange Nacht has blossomed into an event for which between 30,000 and 35,000 tickets are sold twice yearly”, reports Gabriele Miketta, who is responsible for marketing the event. On average, a visitor can expect to manage to visit around five museums of an evening, with the event beginning at 6 p.m. and finishing at 2 a.m. “We incorporate new and interesting

museums and events into the programme each time”, says Miketta. Her recommendations for 25 August: the Bezirksmuseum Kreuzberg (Kreuzberg District Museum), which casts a really unique look at the history of migrants in Berlin, or a tour with GaslichtKultur e.V. The latter organisation advocates the retention of Berlin’s historical street lights and provides information on the development and maintenance of these decorative night-time guides.

“For first-time visitors to the city, the Museuminsel (in English: Museum Island) is, of course, an absolute must. However, only during the Lange Nacht can people also en-

joy a personal guided tour of the island by the museum's director and curator”, comments Miketta. The theme for this year’s Lange Nacht is the anniversary of the founding of the city of Berlin. Germany’s capital will be 775 years old in October: a suitable occasion for lots of museums to present their special exhibits that evening – or, as is the case on the Museuminsel, to let Berlin’s artists lecture on the historical development of the city. “The museums are financed entirely by entry tickets”, says Miketta. And it appears to be a success: according to a Forsa survey at any rate, 93 per cent of Berlin’s residents have at least heard of the Lange Nacht.

“The Lange Nacht der Museen is a true Berlin original, as the idea originated here. In the meantime, more than 100 other cities, from Buenos Aires to Reykjavik, have followed in our footsteps with the concept.”

Bergmannstraße in the Kreuzberg district is one of those places that visitors to Berlin always like to head for, be they 18 or 80 years old. Some people come here for the clubs and the many affordable restaurants, while others are attracted by the street's rich history. Right in the middle of it all is the Marheinekeplatz square, with the Markthalle (“indoor market” in English) that’s named after it. The market was opened as indoor market number 11 in 1892 and accommodated 290 stalls, each four square metres in size. The market sold meat and vegetables, along with baked goods, flowers and haberdashery. That wide range of produce remains to this day. Following the site’s renovation in 2007 however, the traders now work in a bright, cheerful space. Fresh, local organic produce is also now available.

A French-born chef of Portuguese descent serves up Russian dishes with an international flavour on Berlin’s most famous boulevard

A

new restaurant by the name of „Berlin Moscow“ has opened up on Unter den Linden: not an everyday occurrence on this, the most well known of Berlin’s boulevards. For that reason alone, everybody was quite curious as to what sort of big culinary project was hiding behind the 60 metre long, two-storey glass façade. Whatever was to be found, you certainly couldn’t get closer to the Muscovites anywhere else here in Berlin, as the restaurant is located directly across from the embassy of the Russian Federation.

But does this proximity pay dividends on the diners’ plates? According to Emmanuel Soares, the restaurant’s well-travelled chef born in France with Portuguese roots, the food is “light, fresh and clear in structure”. In other words, it’s just about the exact opposite of what Russian mothers serve their children.

And yet, the menu includes such Russian favourites as borscht and solyanka, pelmeni and blini, classic Soares refashioned with a modern flair, thereby giving the dishes the desired lightness.

The restaurant's sausages and other meats come directly from the Kitzbühel butcher Huber and, in addition to white beer (“Weißbier” in German) and pils lager.

“Zurück zum Ursprung” (“Back to basics”) is the motto of the restaurant's new menu. It’s a motto that the landlords live up to with their oven-fresh crusted roast pork in dark beer sauce, Huber's take on “Leberkäse” (meatloaf) or cheese specialities from Bavaria, Tyrol and South Tyrol with apricot mustard and farmhouse bread, to name but a few of the dishes that can be enjoyed here.
